College Football TV Schedule and Point Spreads: Week 4, September 26

Sep 21, 2009

Another weekend of college football is in the books, which means that another one is fast approaching.

Last week, we saw USC drop their annual game to an inferior Pac-10 opponent as Washington pulled off the upset of the weekend by beating the Trojans.

We also saw Charlie Weis stave off the mob for at least one more week when Notre Dame held off Michigan State in South Bend.

Additionally, we watched Lane Kiffin and Tennessee hang tough but lose by 10 in The Swamp and witnessed the resurrection of The U back to national prominence behind the cool, calm, collected leadership of an impressive sophomore quarterback.

There aren’t a whole lot of great games this weekend, but certainly a few highlights worth checking out. Now that conference schedules have started, the ante gets upped each weekend.

Below are the college football games of the week, as well as our usual college football TV schedule and point spreads table.

The spreads and odds listed below are from Monday, so things could change between when I post them and Saturday. Here are your links to our friends at DocSports for the most up-to-date spread and handicapping information. (College football odds, College football picks)

College Football Betting Lines, Odds & Point Spreads Report: September 19th 2009

Sep 19, 2009

Here is a rundown of today’s college football betting odds and NCAA point spreads from ATS Consultants for September 19th 2009. If you are looking for free college football betting picks on a daily basis be sure to sign-up for the ATS newsletter, featuring unmatched sports wagering information, free picks and expert analysis.

Week 3 of the College Football season kicks into full force today and tonight with a full schedule of action. A few games stand out on tonight’s schedule. Nebraska visits Virginia Tech in Blacksburg for a big ACC-Big 12 showdown. Notre Dame will look to bounce back from a brutal loss last weekend at Michigan, they face Michigan State today in South Bend. Lane Kiffin has backed off of his earlier trash talk, but I don’t think that will prevent Florida from laying a whoopin on the Vols this afternoon in Gainesville. Should be a fun day of action. Good luck!

Reasons why Oklahoma covers the spread:

1.) The Sooners are going to be under-valued until Sam Bradford returns. Yes, he’s a great player, but he doesn’t make or break this team. Oklahoma returns one of the top defenses in the country, and through two games Oklahoma is giving up just 7.0 PPG. Nine starters are back defensively, and they are really making their presence felt. Tulsa has only five starters back on offense. One of the key elements missing from last year’s high-powered offense is quarterback David Johnson, who threw for over 4,000 yards and 46 touchdowns. New QB G.J. Kinne will struggle against this Oklahoma defense. The last time these teams met was in 2007, with Oklahoma coming away with a 62-21 road win.

2.) Tulsa is 0-6 ATS in road games after scoring 37 points or more in 2 straight games over the last 3 seasons. Oklahoma is 6-0 ATS off a home win over the last 2 seasons. The Sooners are 9-1 ATS after leading in their previous game by 24 or more points at the half over the last 3 seasons. The Sooners know that their only shot to get back to a National Championship is to win out, and win impressively in the process. Don’t expect the Sooners to put on the breaks once they get up big in this one. Bet Oklahoma at home.

College Football TV Schedule and Point Spreads – Week 3, September 19th

Sep 14, 2009

college football tv schedule, point spreads - week 3, saturday september 19 | espn, abc, fsn, big ten networkWell, well, well.

Before we get to the Week 3 college football tv schedule and point spreads, let’s quickly review what was quite a decisive September weekend for the Big Ten that we just got done with.

Penn State still has yet to show any chinks in its armor, rolling over Syracuse 28-7, although they still have not been tested.

Ohio State was not able to shed the “can’t win the big one” label as their defense faded down the stretch against USC and Terrelle Pryor continued to look overmatched against good defenses in Jim Tressel’s system.

Michigan, of course, re-announced its presence on the national scene with a thrilling victory over Notre Dame that vaulted it back into the top 25.

And my alma mater Indiana moved to 2-0 on the young season with a tough, hard-fought 23-19 victory over…Western Michigan. (I won’t start getting excited until the Hoosiers beat someone without a direction at the beginning of their name.)

Actually, the truth is that no one care what Indiana last weekend. But Minnesota, Wisconsin, Northwestern, and Iowa all moved to 2-0. Say what you will about the competition, but being only four games away from bowl eligibility (for those who have not yet feasted on an FCS opponent) in mid-September is always a good thing.

So what does Week 3 of the college football season — for everyone, not just the Big Ten — have in store? Honestly, not nearly as many compelling matchups as last weekend. Still, there are a few highlights, starting with the two weekday games we have to look forward to on this week’s college football TV schedule:

college football tv schedule, point spreads - week 3, saturday september 19 | espn, abc, fsn, big ten network

#14 Georgia Tech at #20 Miami (FL)

  • Georgia Tech-Miami Date: Thursday, September 17th
  • Georgia Tech-Miami Kickoff Time: 7:30 ET
  • Georgia Tech-Miami TV Channel: ESPN
  • Georgia Tech-Miami Point Spread: Miami -4.5

#10 Boise State at Fresno State

  • Boise State-Fresno State Date: Friday, September 18th
  • Boise State-Fresno State Kickoff Time: 9:00 ET
  • Boise State-Fresno State TV Channel: ESPN
  • Boise State-Fresno State Point Spread: Boise State -7.5

Tennessee at #1 Florida

  • Tennessee-Florida Date: Saturday, September 19th
  • Tennessee-Florida State Kickoff Time: 3:30 ET
  • Tennessee-Florida TV Channel: CBS
  • Tennessee-Florida Point Spread: Florida -29.5

Michigan State at Notre Dame

  • Michigan State-Notre Dame Date: Saturday, September 19th
  • Michigan State-Notre Dame State Kickoff Time: 3:30 ET
  • Michigan State-Notre Dame TV Channel: NBC
  • Michigan State-Notre Dame Point Spread: Notre Dame -10.5

#19 Nebraska at #13 Virginia Tech

  • Nebraska-Virginia Tech Date: Saturday, September 19th
  • Nebraska-Virginia Tech Kickoff Time: 3:30 ET
  • Nebraska-Virginia Tech TV Channel: ABC (Regional Coverage)
  • Nebraska-Virginia Tech Point Spread: Virginia Tech -3.5

Honestly, I could list some other games, but they really are all about the same. If there was ever a week to use your Saturday for something productive, this one is it. Not a whole lot of highlights.

Which, of course, means it will be the week that three top-10 teams fall. Maybe. Or maybe not.

The MWC Week 2 Review

Sep 13, 2009

With another week of football games under our belt we were able to see some interesting things play out in the conference, and I must say that for all the grief I got last week about CSU’s ranking, I feel pretty good about it heading into week 3.  Let’s take a look at what went on.

Air Force 13 (1-1) – Minnesota 20

The Falcons could not fly home with a win on this one.  In a well fought game, close game, AFA came up short in what would have been another good win over a BCS school.  Minnesota is now 2-0 and looks to be having a good program this year.  They have been on the cusp of greatness the last couple years and we will know more about this year when they face Cal this week.  But I would have expected Air Force to come away with a W.  This was a bummer for the MWC.  What makes it so bad for Air Force is that Minnesota scored 17 unanswered points in the 4th quarter to pull off the win.  AFA will have to learn to close out teams if they want to rack up wins in the MWC.

#7 BYU 54 (2-0) – Tulane 3

I did not think that BYU started slow.  Sure we all want TDs on every drive, but the Cougars scored on all but 2 drives while the Green Wave put points on the board in 1 of 12 drives!  That is absolute dominance.  If you were actually watching the game you knew that there was no chance for Tulane even if we only kicked FGs in the first quarter.  My lowlight of the day was seeing Braden Hansen go down and I hope that it is not anything too serious.  If you were watching at home, you saw that the replay did not look pretty.  My highlight would then have to be Freshman, Marco “Moose” Thorson (A fellow SoCal baller from Ramona) stepped in and did a fantastic job.  Oh yeah and Dennis Pitta will catch anything he can get a finger on!

Colorado State 24 (2-0) – Weber State 23

Either Weber is starting to content for a MWC title or CSU and Wyoming are just not that good?!  Which is it?  I am starting to doubt CSU knowing that they just squeaked out a win against the Wildcats.  CSU went into the locker room trailing 20 – 17 and had to score in the 4th quarter to go ahead for the win.  Not too good.  Then I saw the score of the Colorado game…LOSING to TOLEDO?!  The Buffs are obviously a weaker team this year and the Rocky Mountain Showdown, while a good MWC over Big 12 win, really looks like it was just a matchup of two poor football teams.  At 2-0 though the Rams are still going to be walking tall.  Confidence breeds success, they say.

New Mexico 10 (0-2)- Tulsa 44

It would appear that with the loss of Rocky Long, the fire and passion has left the New Mexico Defense.  This is back to back weeks of 40+ points surrendered by the Lobos who usually boast a physical D whose engines never turn off.  That coupled with the fact that UNM kept handing Tulsa the football ended up being a demolishing combination.  Tulsa is a good football team who will probably win Conference USA this year.  You can’t go around handing that high powered offense any extra possessions.

San Diego St 35 (1-1) – Southern Utah University 19
From last week, “They have the athletes, they were playing hard and they looked good. They just need to remember how to WIN games!”  They got a win against a mediocre program, but a win is a win to SDSU right now and it was good for their program.  As I said, Success breeds confidence and that is something this team lacks right now.  I think they will get better and better as the year goes on but that they are at least 1 year away from being a reckon-able force.  Side note to this game, Cade Cooper was the QB for the SUU.  Too bad he didn’t stay at BYU, he’d be #7 in the country right now.

#15 TCU 30 (1-0) – Virginia 14

A good win over the ACC.  I hate those East Coast conferences.  I think that if TCU were 2-0 right now instead of 1-0 they would be more like #10 in the country.  They came out in their first game of the season and played really well and really disciplined.  They jumped out to a lead with 30 unanswered points and got scored on late in the 4th quarter with mostly (if not all) reserves in the game.  They will be a tough game this year and I am glad that we get them at LES.  Their Defense will be the same tough, fast defense that has been ranked in the top 5 nationally the last couple years and when we meet it will be a game between two unbeatens.  Man I love the hype!

UNLV 21 (1-1) – Oregon St 23

So UNLV has a very average defense who could not contain Jaquiz (sp) Rodgers.  Not many defenses can.  The kid was PAC 10 PLAYER OF THE YEAR last year!  As much as we hate the PAC 10, they have good athletes and according to them he was the best.  That being said, UNLV is UNLV and we don’t lose to UNLV.  After getting their butts kicked they found a way to be ahead with 4 minutes to play in the game.  Then the corner makes a bone-head play on 3rd and FOREVER and Oregon State finishes the drive to win the game.  UNLV has two very good recievers, Wolfe and Anthony.  They will get the ball a lot and have to get the ball a lot in order to win.  Clayton went out of the game with a knee injury, but the back up that came in did just as good a job.  Without Frank the Tank, the run game is just not there for UNLV.  At the end of the day they played tough against the 3rd best team in the PAC 10 and a team that I think is pretty darn good.  Especially now that they have Canfield playing QB instead of Moetau (or whatever his name is).

#18 Utah 24 (2-0) – San Jose State 14

Not a very good showing for the Utes, which is why they dropped a spot in the polls.  If you let inferior teams hang around long enough, they start believing they can win and then they start playing like it.  Utah is not as good as they were last year.  I hope they continue to play well so that beating them will fell that much better, but it would appear they have taken a step back since last year.  They played really sloppy in the first half and didn’t make the halftime adjustments (like they normally do really well) to bury the Spartans.

Wyoming 10 (1-1) – #2 Texas 41

Man what a first half!  When Wyoming took the blocked punt into the endzone at the end of the half they all the momentum in the world.  Then Colt McCoy remembered he QBs the #2 team in the country and the horns go 70 yards in 1 minute to take the halftime lead.  That TD right before the half took all the wind out of WYOs sails and it was all down hill from there.  Texas is good, Wyoming is who they normally are, and that is the score I expected to see from this game.

Week 2 Rankings
1. BYU
2. TCU
3. Utah
4. Air Force
5. UNLV
6. SDSU
7. Colorado St
8. Wyoming
9. New Mexico

Tulane vs. BYU
Free Prediction: BYU -17 -110 betting odds (September 12th 2009)
Visit Touthouse.com for more NCAA football predictions from Info Plays

Reasons why BYU covers the spread:
1.) Most may be predicting a letdown for BYU here, but we don’t see it happening this early in the season. The Cougars proved they are for real with a 14-13 victory over then-No. 3 Oklahoma last week. Their defense was the big surprise, but considering the Cougars returned 8 starters on the stop unit it shouldn’t be that big of a shocker. They also have all-everything QB Max Hall back, and all he did last week was pass for 329 yards against a very good Sooners’ defense. Tulane lost 13-37 in their home opener last week to Tulsa, and the Cougars are a far more talented team, especially defensively, than the Golden Hurricane are this season. Tulsa put up 201 rushing yards and 211 passing yards on only 20 attempts in that game, so it appears once again this Tulane defense cannot stop anybody after going 2-10 last year.

2.) System Play. We’ll Play On - Favorites of 10.5 to 21 points (BYU) - good passing team from last season - averaged 8 or more passing yards/attempt, in non-conference games. This is a 27-6 ATS System hitting 81.8% over the last 5 seasons. Also Tulane is 6-19 ATS in home games after allowing 37 points or more since 1992. This is a complete mismatch and the final score will show it. Bet BYU on the road.

What to Do While You Drink: Week Two

Sep 10, 2009

It is the best of weekends, it is the worst of weekends…

College football is known as a cyclical game; the success of teams and conferences ebbs and flows over time, while offensive and defensive systems go in and out of fashion.  The schedule is different on a weekly basis.  One weekend will be chalked full of great matchups while another will appear to be almost entirely devoid of quality games.  This weekend appears to the latter, which is good.  We’ll explain.

THURSDAY, SEPT. 10

Clemson v. (15) Georgia Tech
7:30pm, ESPN
Chris Fowler, Jesse Palmer, Craig James, Erin Andrews

First things first, the NFL kicks off tonight opposite this game so that is a huge distraction.  I cannot say this game will get my full attention.

In case you have did not get enough of the triple option last weekend, you can check out the father of Navy’s attack tonight.

This game game is historically close with six of the last nine games being decided by less than four points, which incidentally is the Vegas line.

There are other non-gambling reasons to watch this one, too.  Jonathan Dwyer (GT) and CJ Spiller (CLM) both tore of ginormous runs on their first touches last weekend—Spiller had a 96-yard kickoff return and Dwyer took the opening play 74 yards for a score.  As even as that matchup sounds, the addition of Nesbitt and Roddy Jones make GT far more versatile.

FRIDAY, SEPT. 11

Colorado v. Toledo
9:00pm, ESPN
Ron Franklin, Ed Cunningham

By this time on Friday, you will likely be crouched in your fortified bunker/basement surrounded by stacks of canned food and dozens of AA batteries.

Accordingly, this will be your only outlet for overly intense football focus.  All you need to do is pretend either one of these is relevant.  Did you see either one play last weekend?  Easier said than done.

SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12

You will likely wake up at sun up with a clenched fist and blood pressure somewhere north of really high. You will need to watch football...badly. But you will not have attention span to pay attention to anything other than the endless promos for the Ohio State game.  I

n that sense, it is a good thing that noon slot is pure garbage.  You couldn't concentrate anyway.

Think of the noon slot as an educational endeavor.  Penn State takes on a Syracuse squad that was awfully pesky for Minnesota last weekend.  Granted, that was in the Carrier Dome (and it was against Minny), but it will be interesting to see if the ‘Cuse is able to put up any kind of fight this weekend. Ditto for Central Michigan.

Syracuse v. (7) Penn State
12:00pm, Big Ten Network
Craig Coshun, Glen Mason, Kenny Jackson

This game is more of a referendum on Minnesota than a judgment of Penn State.  (Is Minnesota that horrible?  Is that a rhetorical question?)

You will find out in a hurry if Penn State hangs four first half touchdowns on SU.  The Nittany Lions dominated the Orange last season 55-13, so a similar beating should signal decent things for Penn State and horrific results for Minnesota.

Or, maybe Minny was looking forward to the ass-whipping they will get from California this week as they open their new (and very nice) outdoor stadium.

Central Michigan v. Michigan State
12:00pm, ESPN2
Pam Ward, Ray Bentley

I always give you a flip game, so I will follow through with it here as well, but there is almost no reason why you should watch this game.  I mean, Ohio State does not even play MSU this season.  In all honesty, I think it is best to stay away from the this mess.

Drive-bys in desperation include Breakfast in Madison a.k.a. the Fresno State v. Wisconsin game and, um…who am I kidding.  If you find these games totally unpalatable (and no one would blame you if you do), you can watch the U.S. Open Men’s semifinals, or just go to the gym and burn off some of that nervous energy.

Finally, things start to get a little interesting at 3:30 pm.  But, just as you are getting ready to watch a classic rivalry attempt to resuscitate itself, you realize that you need to head down to Woody Hayes Drive and make sure everyone is drinking their beer out of a plastic cup.

That way, Ohio State fans and tailgaters alike can double their carbon footprint by throwing out thousands of cans and bottles that held that exact same beer.  The USC/OSU tailgate may be the least environmentally friendly tailgate in the country this season.  Anyway, I digress.

(18) Notre Dame v. Michigan
3:30pm, ABC
Sean McDonough, Matt Millen, Holly Rowe

Oh yeah, ND/UM.  If you do watch, and you should if you are at home, you will see two radically different offenses; and by that I mean two offenses that will not make you sick to your stomach.  You could make a sincere argument that Michigan has the better athletes and with a little execution, this game could be theirs.

UCLA v. Tennessee
4:00pm, ESPN
Brad Nessler, Todd Blackledge, Erin Andrews

This is easily the most hateful game of the day (and possibly season) with Lane Kiffin and Rick Neuheisal squaring off.  UT looked better than most thought and everyone wanted, so they appear to have the edge on a UCLA team that is still trying to get used to a season without dozens of catastrophic injuries.

The nice part of this flip game is that it is half an hour behind the Michigan game, so you will not have to sit through the clown college that is John Saunders's half time babble.

South Carolina v. (21)Georgia
7:00pm, ESPN
Mike Patrick, Craig James, Heather Cox

This time slot is the lone nice thing that ESPN has given college football fans.  It fills that void between the late afternoon games and the nightcap with a real contest.

Sure, this may end up being 6-3 boredom festival, but it is a conference game with legitimate implications, which is more than can be said about virtually any other game on Saturday.

(3)USC v. (8)Ohio State
8:00pm, ESPN
ESPN: Brent Musburger, Kirk Herbstreit, Lisa Salters
ESPN 3D: Mark Jones, Bob Davie, Ed Cunningham

Some of you will be watching this one in 3D, which sounds pretty spooky.  If any of you do see this one on the big screen with funny plastic glasses, I demand a full review the following day or at whatever time your eyes and mind recover from watching a 20-foot Terrelle Pryor gallop around the theater.  How can that not be cool?
