Baseball Betting: Athletics vs. Dodgers Odds & Picks: June 17th 2009

Jun 17, 2009

Oakland Athletics @ Los Angeles Dodgers o7.5 (-115 Odds) - Wed June 17 ‘09 10:10p
Visit Touthouse.com for more baseball betting picks from LT Profits

Trevor Cahill of the Oakland Athletics has not pitched well when away from the spacious dimensions of home, and while Kiroki Kuroda has pitched well at home for the Los Angeles Dodgers, this total is low enough where the Dodgers may approach this Over by themselves.

Now Cahill is a highly regarded prospect with a bright future ahead of him, but his home/away splits in his rookie year suggest that while he has learned to pitch to the dimensions of his home stadium, this has not translated well on the road. He is winless in five road starts with a high 5.18 ERA and a horrible 1.81 WHIP, and he is facing an LA lineup that is batting a nice .283 as a team at home, and that has continued to play well here even without Manny Ramirez.

As for his counterpart, Kuroda is 1-2 but with a 2.86 ERA and 1.09 WHIP. Keep in mind though that he has made only four starts, with three of them coming since June 1 when he was activated. What is somewhat alarming is that he is coming off of the worst outing since he comeback, as he was roughed up for five runs and eight hits in 5.1 innings by the Texas Rangers last Friday.

Besides, as mentioned earlier, Kuroda may only need to give up two or three runs to secure this Over, give the current road form of Cahill and the fact that the Oakland bullpen has imploded with a collective 5.40 ERA over the last 10 games.

Bronco Mendenhall And His “Game Plan”

Jun 5, 2009

I feel like this topic has been misconstrued from day one and my hope is that this will help everyone understand what BYU head coach Bronco Mendenhall means when he says, “we don’t focus on the other team, we focus on ourselves.”

I wrote an entire post dedicated to the players preparation last season and I will not repeat it, but I do want to offer a few tid-bits from the coaches point-of-view.

It is impossible to approach a football game without having first scouted out your opponent to find out three very important things: what they like to do, what they are good at doing, and what they are not good at doing. It then becomes the job of the coaching staff to take that information and devise a GAME PLAN that will address those areas.

The problem for the fan is that there are two meanings for the term game plan. The first definition is, "Creating new plays or schemes designed specifically for one opponent and to be used exclusively in that game alone."

Examples of this type of game planning are when teams (BYU included in ‘04 and ‘05) will only put two defensive linemen in the game thinking “We can’t sack the QB so let’s play a ton of pass coverage so there is no where to throw the ball.

Another example is Tulsa’s game plan against BYU in ‘07. All the trick plays and shenanigans were designed specifically for us. They could not run their normal stuff against us and expect to win the game.

This kind of game planning is the kind that coach Mendenhall is not going to partake in. His stance is that he will not ruin the integrity of what we do by changing everything week to week to out smart the opponent.

The second kind of game planning is what our coaches preach to us as players and that is, "Take what you do best and adapt it to the opponent in order to neutralize their strengths and attack their weaknesses." Basically, find the plays within our system that will work best against what the other team does, and then spend the week of practice perfecting the execution of those plays.

Every week we tweak our alignments, coverage, routes, and blocking just a little in order to gain a competitive advantage over our opponent and to tighten up any perceived weaknesses.

To sum it up, our coaches get to the office around 6:00am each morning and are game planning until meetings start at 2:10pm. Then it is on the players to EXECUTE the game plan.

Jay Gibbons ACTUALLY Has a Baseball Job?!?!

May 28, 2009
Look I realize the economy is in the shitter right now and Americans are making tough choices to put food on the table. The city formerly known as Detroit seems to have revitalized itself as Dresden circa 1933, Midwestern auto-industry laborers are tanking like OSU football come January, and I know like one college grad who has a steady job, and he's a dog walker. But apparently somewhere, a minor league general manager is turning back the clocks to a time when the Dow was climbing above 14,000 and it was socially acceptable to wear Von Dutch in public, and STILL TO THIS DAY has the audacity to employ a one Jay Gibbons. Don't remember Jay Gibbons? He's a former Oriole outfielder who was conceived on the set of the 80's arm-wrestling/homoerotic love-fest Over The Top, when Sly Stallone happened to run into Carrot Top dick-first during the shoot. The kid couldn't field worth shit, and if you don't believe me check that wikipedia picture, dollars to donuts he misses this grab, way to close your eyes ass-clown. Throughout his entire career Gibbons was touted as a 'slugger'...except for the fact that douchebag couldn't hit dingers. He had a carrer-high 28 HRs in '03, which I suppose is exceptional if your name is Julio Lugo but not for someone named in the Mitchell report. Saying Jay Gibbons 'roided is like saying Jack Lalanne works out.

Indisputable.

Braxton Dupree Heads to Towson, Local Anonymity

May 18, 2009

Braxton Dupree came out of Calvert Hall with big numbers and big expectations. The hope was that the wide-bodied Dupree would be Lonny Baxter 2.0, and would give the Terps a front-court presence that would crush the Duke Blue Devils’ perimeter-based team, and contend with the North Carolina barrage of big men.

Two years and 2.1 points and rebounds per later, Dupree is headed to Towson University; a campus minutes from his high school and light years away from any legitimate shot at basketball prominence.

Towson is the laughing stock of the CAA. It’s a program that hasn’t had a winning season or conference record in 14 years, and has lost at least 13 games 13 years in a row.

Throw in the fact that MEAC members Morgan State and Coppin State have won the last two conference championships, and a UMBC team that regularly contends for it’s conference championship, and you get a program that could use an uptick in talent and recognition in the Baltimore area.

Dupree is not that uptick.

Perhaps that thought out of Camp Dupree is that he will outsize and out-athlete most of his opponents in the CAA. Problem is, TU thought the same thing would occur with Tony Durant, a former Tiger forward who had great size and limited skill, which basically translated to no success on the floor.

His statistical averages may balloon, but so will his weight and conditioning with the cushioning of a receptive Towson U. welcoming home a prodigal center. The best thing Dupree could’ve done for himself and his career would be to get the heck out of Maryland, and into a thriving basketball culture with some no-nonsense coaches.

Locally, George Mason or George Washington would’ve fit the bill, but a better bet would’ve been Davidson or a like program.

Sports is the only culture where you can go home again and feel that you’ve never left the culture, and the culture has never left you. Dupree never left home, and it’s likely that the homegrown enabling and overvaluing that damaged his career at College Park will follow him to Towson.

Congratulations Graduating Rugby Class of 2009!

May 12, 2009
As the spring rugby season comes to a close, the weather is starting to get warmer (finally in cities other than Texas) and the craze for summer 7's is starting to buzz.
I want to take this moment and congratulate all the graduating 2009 Rugby players.
Whether graduating kindergarten (if overseas), high school or college this is an exciting time in your life; a fresh start, a new beginning, and most importantly an exciting adventure.
You’ve accomplished many things so far in your life even with all the bumps in the road. There is much more to come!
I want to take this time not only to congratulate you all, but to remind you of one thing that made this time so special and so unforgettable….Rugby.
A sport that is a part of your life, a part of your family, a part of you.  Please remember this experience and carry it with you in your next adventures.
I received an email a few weeks ago from the USA Rugby Membership Department and I want to share it with all our readers.
It included a breakdown of all the CIPP registered rugby players in the nation broken down by league (club, collegiate, high school, etc.).  It even divided the numbers between men and women.  Here are the stats:

Since 8/15/08, 81,920 Club & Individual Members have registered with USA Rugby.
21,878          Adult members  (Female 3,612; Male 18,266)
28,827          College members (Female 10,230; Male 18,597)
24,253          HS/U19 members (Female 5,133; Male 19,120)
3,388            Youth/U15 members (Female 173; Male 3,215)
1,377            Referee Members (Female 204; Male 1,173)

** You can always access real-time information on any specific TU or LAU from USA Rugby.

So, here is my shout-out to all the ladies. Please continue to play after college and help support this game for future generations. The numbers don’t lie.  There are 10,000 collegiate players right now, so why aren’t there more women club players?
It’s not even half! We need to keep this sport alive by continuing to play, coaching, and refereeing.
When you start thinking about walking away from the sport that has brought you so much… road trips…rookie skits… boat races… 6 am practices… All-Star events… National Championships… laughs… loves…and friends.
Think about if you had never started this adventure.

To the Rugby Class of 2009…. Carpi Rugby!

Wily Mo Pena Full Circle...

May 10, 2009

Wily Mo Pena's first professional baseball contract was with the Mets, 11 years ago, but a technicality voided the deal and Pena signed with the Yankees. The reason Pena, then 16 years old, signed with the Yanks was that the contract guaranteed he'd be in the majors within four years.

After being traded to the Reds, Pena was in the majors by the time he was 20 years old, but he spent most of his time on the bench as a part time player. It's that major league contract that many scouts blame for impeding Pena from reaching his true potential as a lethal power hitter.
MiLB has a great article today on Pena, including his time in Cincy and who influenced him while he tried to learn the game on the fly, as a youngster who was rushed through the system. At 27 years old it doesn't sound like Pena regrets anything that has happened, but there is an incredible amount of untapped potential that could be developed in the right situation.
Pena is learning first base in Buffalo, he has played the position in winter ball and a few times, two years ago for the Red Sox AAA affiliate, but never in the majors. With Carlos Delgado sure to leave after the season, a right handed power bat at first base would be a welcome addition. Tatis spent all of 2007 in AAA with Obie before becoming "Comeback player of the year" in 2008, the Mets may see Pena as a long term project..
Much like Sheffield, Pena is off to a slow offensive start (BA .185) but his power threat is still effecting the hitters around him in a positive way....
"He's a big threat when it comes to the offense," Herd manager Ken Oberkfell said. "It's helping get Fernando [Martinez] good pitches to hit because you don't want to pitch around Fernando to get to Wily Mo. And with Ramon [Martinez] hitting second, he's going to get good pitched to hit because of Fernando hitting behind him. It's kind of like that snowball effect." source MiLB
