Video: Jazz Chisholm Jr. Says Juan Soto Should Get $700M Contract from Yankees

Oct 20, 2024

A jubilant Jazz Chisholm Jr. proclaimed that New York Yankees teammate and impending free agent Juan Soto should get a $700 million contract to remain in the Bronx after the Yanks clinched the American League pennant on Saturday evening.

Chisholm made his remarks to YES Network's Meredith Marakovits (25-second mark).

Soto smacked a three-run homer in the top of the 10th inning to help the Yankees defeat the Cleveland Guardians 5-2 in Game 5 of the American League Championship Series. New York has now won the AL pennant for the first time since 2009.

Soto arrived in New York via trade from the San Diego Padres last offseason. He's been everything as advertised and then some, hitting 41 home runs to go along with 109 RBI and a .989 OPS. His 128 runs led the American League.

He's turned it up a notch in the playoffs, though. Soto dominated Cleveland, hitting three home runs (with six RBI) alongside a .368 batting average (1.373 OPS).

Now the question is how much Soto will get next year, and from whom.

The New York Post's Jon Heyman reported the new "whisper number" for Soto is $600 million. That would make him the second-highest paid player in baseball history behind only the Los Angeles Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani at $700 million.

It would also dwarf the contract that New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge received before the 2023 campaign at nine years and $360 million.

New York will certainly be in the mix for Soto, but the New York Mets, San Francisco Giants and Washington Nationals are seen as "frontrunners," per MLB.com's Mark Feinsand, Sarah Langs and Anthony DiComo. It can only help that the Yankees are AL pennant champs and could win their first World Series in 15 years. Staying with the World Series champions would be a great selling point, of course.

For now, Soto and the Yanks are focused on winning the Fall Classic, which begins Friday. The Yankees will either head to Los Angeles to play the Dodgers or welcome the crosstown rival New York Mets to the Bronx for Game 1.

Juan Soto Worth $600M Yankees Contract After ALCS Heroics Amid MLB Free Agency Rumor

A wise man once said, "you get what you pay for."

This offseason, the eyes of the baseball will be on free agent Juan Soto and exactly how much the winning bidder will pay for the 26-year-old All-Star who slugged the New York Yankees to the World Series with a tenth-inning home run Saturday night in Cleveland.

The New York Post's Jon Heyman reported the new "whisper number" for Soto is $600 million. That would make it the second-highest contract in the game's history behind Shohei Ohtani's massive $700 million deal signed last year.

A unicorn of sorts in that he is a free agent in the prime of his career and coming off the best season of an already acclaimed career.

Soto delivered career highs in home runs (41), hits (166), and runs (128). Those 128 hits also led the American League.

That he came through with the biggest hit of his Yankees tenure when the team needed it, cashing their ticket to the World Series and giving the Bronx Bombers their first opportunity to compete for the most coveted prize in professional baseball, only accentuated how significant a year he has had and how much he will command when he hits the market.

The New York Yankees will figure to have the inside edge on retaining Soto's services for years to come but will not be without competition. ESPN's Buster Olney has already expressed his belief that the right-fielder will sign with the across-town Mets on his Baseball Tonight podcast.

USA Today's Bob Nightengale reported that the Phillies are expected to bid on Soto, too. As are the Toronto Blue Jays.

There will be plenty of teams that are close on money or outright have the funds to make the deal happen and, if Heyman's reported number is in fact the starting point for any deal that Soto puts pen to paper on, he will have earned every dollar of it.

In a season when he had plenty to prove after a stint in San Diego that did not go as he or ownership expected, he excelled and has the Yankees ready to add another World Series title to the most decorated organization in MLB.

Whether the championship experience and career highs are enough to convince Soto to come back to the Yankees, or if a high-dollar paycheck from the Mets or any other potential suitor is enough to lure him away, is the question.

Yankees' Giancarlo Stanton on MLB ALCS MVP Win: 'This Ain't the Trophy I Want'

The World Series trophy is one of the only things missing from Giancarlo Stanton's resume after he won the American League Championship Series MVP while leading his New York Yankees to a five-game victory over the Cleveland Guardians.

And he's looking to change that.

"It's a special moment for me," Stanton said of winning ALCS MVP, per ESPN's Jorge Castillo. "It's a special time. But this ain't the trophy I want. I want the next one."

Stanton has a league MVP, Home Run Derby title, five All-Star selections and two Silver Sluggers in his career, but he is now four wins away from his first title. And the Yankees are four wins away from their first title since 2009.

New York is largely in this position because of Stanton's individual brilliance, as he launched home runs in Games 1, 3, 4 and 5 of the series against Cleveland. While the Bronx Bombers feature no shortage of star power with Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Anthony Rizzo, among others, the Guardians' inability to keep Stanton in the ballpark proved costly.

It was more of the same for the slugger, who now has 16 home runs in 36 postseason games for the Yankees.

He is also hitting .294 in these playoffs, which is much better than his .233 mark in the regular season and makes it all the more difficult to deal with his team's lineup when he is bringing more than just power to the table.

The winner of the National League Championship Series between the Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Mets will be the only thing standing in the way of Stanton and the trophy he wants, and another performance like he had in the ALCS may be too much for either team to stop.

MLB Playoff Bracket 2024: World Series Picture After Soto, Yankees Beat Guardians

Oct 20, 2024

The New York Yankees are back in the World Series for the first time in 15 years.

A tenth-inning blast from Juan Soto in Game 5 of the ALCS on Saturday night led the Yankees to a pennant-clinching win over the Cleveland Guardians.

Thanks to a game-tying home run from ALCS MVP Giancarlo Stanton in the sixth and two scoreless innings from closer Luke Weaver, the Yankees will now take on either the New York Mets or Los Angeles Dodgers in the 2024 World Series.

The Mets pushed the NLCS to at least six games on Friday with a 12-6 win that staved off elimination at home.

Now the league championship series is headed back to Los Angeles, where the Dodgers will get another chance to claim the NL pennant with a win on Sunday night.

Should the Mets fend off elimination for a second straight game, the series would go to a winner-takes-all Game 7 on Monday.

Whichever opponent the Yankees face, the World Series will take place according to the schedule below (all games broadcast on FOX.)

2024 World Series Schedule

Game 1: Friday, Oct. 25

Game 2: Saturday, Oct. 26

Game 3: Monday, Oct. 28

Game 4: Tuesday, Oct. 29

Game 5: Wednesday, Oct. 30 (if necessary)

Game 6: Friday, Nov. 1 (if necessary)

Game 7: Saturday, Nov. 2 (if necessary)

Should the Dodgers secure a spot in the World Series with a win on Sunday, the team would have home advantage with Games 1, 2, 6 and 7 set to take place in Los Angeles.

If the Mets push the Dodgers to seven games and then win the NL pennant, the Yankees would host the first two games of the series, as well as Games 6 and 7 if necessary, in the Bronx.

The New York Yankees are headed to the 2024 World Series, courtesy of Juan Soto.

Soto's three-run homer in the 10th inning of Game 5 powered the Yankees to an ALCS-clinching 5-2 victory over the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday night.

The hit off Guardians closer Hunter Gaddis, which came with two outs and two strikes on the board, sent Jasson Dominguez and Alex Verdugo home and gave the Yankees a late three-run lead.

Soto, who was named a co-winner of the Babe Ruth Award for his role in leading the Washington Nationals to the 2019 World Series, has now played a key role in winning a pennant for the second time in his career.

Luke Weaver closed out the victory after Soto's home run by retiring three straight Guardians batters in the bottom of the 10th. Soto then caught the final fly out to secure the AL pennant for the Yankees.

Trouble started for the Guardians in the top of the 10th when shortstop Brayan Rocchio bobbled a potential out at second, allowing the Yankees to get a runner in scoring position.

The Guardians looked like they would have a chance to extend the championship series to six games early on Saturday night. Bo Naylor got the home team on the board first with an RBI double in the bottom of the second, and Steve Kwan doubled the lead with a scoring single in the fifth.

Then Giancarlo Stanton answered for the Yankees with a game-tying two-RBI home run in the sixth.

Stanton, who finished the series with four home runs and seven RBI, was named the ALCS MVP after the Game 5 win.

The Yankees are now headed to the World Series for the first time in 15 years, while Cleveland's title drought will extend to a 76th year.

The Pinstripes will be playing either the Los Angeles Dodgers or New York Mets as they battle for the 28th World Series title in franchise history. The Dodgers could secure a ticket to face them with a win at home on Sunday night, while a Mets victory would send the NLCS to a winner-takes-all Game 7.

Following the New York Yankees' series-clinching 5-2 victory over the Cleveland Guardians to advance to the World Series, designated hitter Giancarlo Stanton was named the 2024 American League Championship Series MVP.

The Yankees defeated the Guardians in extra innings on Saturday night, with Stanton hitting one home run with two RBI in the team's victory.

Stanton has recorded five runs, four home runs, and nine RBI during the postseason, helping the Yankees advance to their first World Series since their 2009 championship.

The 34-year-old adds this title to his lengthy list of accolades in his 18th year in MLB, which includes the 2017 MVP, two Silver Slugger awards, and two Hank Aaron awards.

Game One of the World Series will kick off on Friday, with the Yankees facing the winner of the National League Championship Series in either the New York Mets or the Los Angeles Dodgers.

LA currently leads the series 3-2 and will have the chance to punch its ticket to the Fall Classic with a win over the Mets at Dodger Stadium on Sunday night.

Giancarlo Stanton's playoff heroics have the New York Yankees one win away from their first World Series appearance since 2009 after Friday's 8-6 victory over the Cleveland Guardians in Game 4 of the ALCS.

Speaking to reporters after the win, Stanton explained that he's learned "no lead is safe" based on how the past two games have gone, but despite being on the doorsteps of the World Series nothing has been accomplished yet.

"It feels like nothing until we get it done," Stanton said. "As far as I'm concerned, we haven't done nothing."

Even though Aaron Judge has been bestowed the official title of Yankee captain, Alex Verdugo called Stanton "our second captain" because of his selfess attitude and ability to lead by example while speaking when the moment requires it.

Following a dramatic 7-5 loss in Game 4, Stanton and the Yankees got back on track in thrilling fashion on Friday night. His three-run homer off Cade Smith in the sixth inning gave New York a 6-2 lead.

Cleveland battled back by scoring four answered runs between the seventh and eighth innings to tie the score, but the Yankees once again got to All-Star closer Emmanuel Clase for two runs in the ninth.

The Guardians had the winning run at the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but Tommy Kahnle got Brayan Rocchio to groundout to end the game. New York has scored a total of six runs in the eighth inning or later of the past two games.

Stanton is operating at another level this postseason. He .300/.400/.767 slash line with nine hits, four homers and nine RBI in eight games. He has homered in three of four ALCS games against Cleveland pitching.

This has come after Stanton hit .210/.292/.446 in 45 games after returning from a strained hamstring on July 29. The five-time All-Star has 15 homers in his postseason career, with seven of them coming in 11 games against the Guardians dating back to 2020.

Carlos Rodón gets the start for New York in Game 5 with a chance to punch a ticket to the Fall Classic. He was terrific in the series opener with nine strikeouts and one run allowed on three hits over six innings in the Yankees' 5-2 win.

The Guardians will turn to Tanner Bibee to save their season. The 25-year-old allowed three runs (two earned) and threw just 39 pitches over 1.1 innings in his Game 2 start.

Game 5 of the ALCS between the Yankees and Guardians will be at Progressive Field on Saturday at 8:08 p.m. ET.

After another back-and-forth game in the 2024 American League Championship Series, the New York Yankees came out on top.

The Yankees took down the Cleveland Guardians by the final score of 8-6 on Friday night, taking a 3-1 series lead and putting themselves one win away from the World Series.

New York jumped out to an early advantage, as Juan Soto launched a two-run home run in the top of the first inning.

The Yankees maintained a 3-2 lead through five innings before Giancarlo Stanton hit a three-run blast to left field. Stanton now has four homers in eight postseason games this year.

Similar to Game 3, Cleveland fought back. The Guardians cut the deficit to 6-5 due to RBI doubles from José Ramírez and Josh Naylor. Then, David Fry tied the contest with a one-run single in the bottom of the eighth inning.

The Yankees jumped back on top in the next frame, with Jon Berti scoring following an error on an infield ground ball by Brayan Rocchio. Gleyber Torres gave New York some insurance with his own RBI single off Emmanuel Clase before Tommy Kahnle secured the save in the bottom of the ninth.

Fans were impressed with the Yankees' performance as well as the home runs by Stanton and Soto.

The Yankees are now one win away from their first World Series appearance since 2009. They'll attempt to win the AL pennant in Game 5 on Saturday at 8:08 p.m. ET.

Aaron Boone Calls Guardians' Comeback Win vs. Yankees 'an Amazing Game to Witness'

The Cleveland Guardians came back to defeat the New York Yankees 7-5 in 10 innings in Game 3 of the American League Championship Series thanks to two-run homers from Jhonkensy Noel in the ninth and David Fry in the 10th.

This matchup was an instant classic, and even Yankees manager Aaron Boone called it an "amazing game to witness" despite his team coming up short.

The Yankees were down 3-1 in the top of the eighth inning before Aaron Judge smacked a two-run, two-strike, two-out homer off Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase to tie the game at three.

Giancarlo Stanton then smoked a solo homer to put the Yanks up 4-3.

A Gleyber Torres sacrifice fly scored Anthony Volpe in the top of the ninth, and the Yankees led 5-3 going into the bottom of the frame with closer Luke Weaver on the mound.

José Ramírez led off with a single, but Josh Naylor then grounded out into a double play. Lane Thomas then nearly hit the ball out of the park before it hit the top of the center field wall and bounced back into play, resulting in a double.

Noel then came off the bench to pinch-hit and crushed a 1-0 pitch to left field to tie the game.

In the top of the 10th inning, Yankees third baseman Jazz Chisholm cracked a high chopper toward second baseman Andrés Giménez. The ball could have easily bounced over Giménez's head or Chisholm could have beaten the throw. However, Giménez made a tremendous play to get Chisholm out after a Naylor stretch.

Two batters later, Volpe struck out to end the Yankees' threat.

In the bottom of the 10th, Bo Naylor hit a leadoff single and advanced to third after a Brayan Rocchio sacrifice bunt and Steven Kwan groundout. Up strolled Fry, who pinch-hit for Kyle Manzardo, the hero in the third thanks to a two-run blast.

The No. 2 spot proved productive on this evening, as Fry cracked a two-run homer for the victory.

Needless to say, the win probability odds resembled a roller coaster, as noted by Sarah Langs of MLB.com.

The Yankees now lead the best-of-seven series two games to one. Game 4 will take place in Cleveland on Friday at 8:08 p.m. ET.

The New York Yankees suffered a late collapse against the Cleveland Guardians in the American League Championship Series on Thursday night, losing by the final score of 7-5 in extra innings.

The Yankees were on the verge of taking a 3-0 series lead, owning a 5-3 advantage in the bottom of the ninth inning. With two outs and a runner on second, Guardians outfielder Jhonkensy Noel hit a two-run, game-tying homer off Luke Weaver.

Clay Holmes entered the game for New York in the 10th frame, but Cleveland was able to strike with two outs once again. This time, David Fry ended the game with a walk-off home run.

It was a tough loss, especially after the Yankees erased a 3-1 deficit in the eighth inning with back-to-back homers from Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton.

Fans were disappointed with the performances from Weaver and Holmes, who allowed just one earned run in 13.2 combined innings of work throughout the Yankees' 2024 postseason run entering Thursday's contest.

The Yankees will attempt to prevent the Guardians from tying the series in Game 4 on Friday at 8:08 p.m. ET.
