Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani Placed on Paternity List, Could Return During Rangers Series

Joseph Zucker

Colorado Rockies v Los Angeles Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers are placing two-way star Shohei Ohtani on MLB's paternity list.

Manager Dave Roberts told reporters Friday the team activated outfielder Eddie Rosario to fill out their roster. Roberts said Ohtani may return by the conclusion of the three-game series with the Texas Rangers, which wraps up Sunday.

The reigning National League MVP announced in December he and his wife, Mamiko Tanaka, were expecting their first child together.

MLB rules allow a player to remain on the paternity list for up to three days. Should Ohtani exhaust the full amount, he wouldn't return until L.A. opens a two-game set with the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday in the Windy City.

Rangers pitchers would probably prefer he take the entire weekend to be with his wife and newborn.

Ohtani is on pace for another monster season offensively. He has six homers, a .288/.380/.550 slash line, and his 21 runs scored are the most in the majors.

Rosario will provide some depth and give Roberts another left-handed bat over the next few days. The 33-year-old is coming off his worst season, having slugged .316 with the Washington Nationals and Atlanta Braves. But he's an experienced slugger who has two home runs and 12 RBI through 69 Triple-A plate appearances in 2025.

Max Scherzer Gets 2nd Injection in Thumb amid Injury Suffered in Blue Jays Debut

MLB: FEB 25 Spring Training Cardinals at Blue Jays

Toronto Blue Jays starter Max Scherzer received a second cortisone shot to address a thumb injury that he suffered in his season debut, per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN).

Blue Jays manager John Schneider revealed that Scherzer's injection was in a different part of his thumb than the first shot and he's expected to join the team in Houston "next week," via ESPN.

The veteran pitcher left his opening start of the 2025 season after just three innings due to the thumb issue.

Scherzer was initially ruled out due to right lat soreness, but he told reporters that thumb troubles caused his early exit and he was eventually placed on the 15-day injured list due to right thumb inflammation.

His prior cortisone injection occurred one day after his injured list placement.

Scherzer previously had a spring training start pushed back due to thumb soreness.

He was expected to operate as a key piece of Toronto's rotation when the team signed him to a one-year, $15.5 million contract in free agency.

The three-time Cy Young Award winner has remained a capable starting option when healthy, but injuries have limited him in recent years.

Scherzer spent the 2024 season with the Texas Rangers and made just nine starts, posting a 2-4 record to go along with a 3.95 ERA and 1.154 WHIP.

The 40-year-old looked sharp on the mound while gearing up for his 2025 campaign, though. In four spring training appearances, he allowed just five hits and two earned runs throughout 13 innings of work.

Toronto has been able to mitigate the absence of Scherzer so far, owning an 11-8 record. The Blue Jays' 3.17 ERA among starting pitchers also ranks No. 1 in the American League, via MLB.com.

As Scherzer looks to manage his injury and target a return to the mound, he received a second injection in his thumb.

Yankees' Jazz Chisholm Jr. Suspended 1 Game, Fined by MLB for NSFW Post After Ejection

New York Yankees v Tampa Bay Rays

MLB fined New York Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. and suspended him for one game for his comments about an umpire in Thursday's 6-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

Randy Miller of NJ Advance Media confirmed the punishment doled out by the league.

Chisholm was called out on strikes on a fastball out of the zone in the top of the seventh. He disputed the call with home plate umpire John Bacon and got ejected.

In a since-deleted post on social media, the 2022 All-Star said the pitch was "not even f--king close."

The problems for Chisholm were twofold. He confirmed he sent the post as the game was unfolding, which runs afoul of MLB's rules on the usage of electronic devices during games. The league's social media policy also prohibits players from "displaying or transmitting Content that questions the impartiality of or otherwise denigrates a Major or Minor League umpire."

A one-game suspension isn't that much within the context of a full season, and the Yankees certainly have the depth to make up for Chisholm's absence.

But the 27-year-old is trying to work his way out of a slow start to the new campaign. He has six homers through 19 games yet is batting .169 with a .272 on-base percentage. Take away the opening series, when New York's hitters collectively blitzed the Milwaukee Brewers, and Chisholm is slugging just .305.

Serving a one-game suspension is a setback—albeit a small one—at a bad time for the veteran infielder.

Cubs' Justin Steele Posts Photo After Season-Ending Surgery for Elbow Injury

Texas Rangers v Chicago Cubs

Chicago Cubs pitcher Justin Steele has provided an update following his season-ending surgery.

The southpaw took to social media to thank fans after undergoing reconstructive elbow surgery. The details of Steele's surgery have yet to be announced.

"Appreciate the prayers and thoughts.. God is good," Steele wrote.

Steele's last start came on April 7 when he went seven innings and allowed zero runs in the Cubs 7-0 victory over the Texas Rangers. He finishes his 2025 season with a 3-1 record and a 4.76 ERA in four starts.

The southpaw has a career record of 32-22 and a 3.30 ERA. He was an All-Star in 2023 and has been a strong presence at the top of the Cubs rotation.

Chicago is currently 12-9 and expects to contend for the NL Central. Losing Steele is a tough blow but the team will hope a rotation of Shota Imanaga, Jameson Taillon, Matthew Boyd, Ben Brown and Javier Assad can hold it down.

Steele will now watch from the sidelines and will hope to be ready to go for the 2026 season.

Yankees' Jazz Chisholm Jr. Deletes NSFW Post About MLB Umpire's Call After Ejection

MLB: APR 14 Royals at Yankees

New York Yankees second baseman Jazz Chisholm Jr. sounded off on home-plate umpire John Bacon in Thursday's 6-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays.

In a since-deleted post on X, Chisholm wrote Bacon's called third strike on him in the seventh inning was "not even f--king close!!!!!"

Bacon made the call on a pitch from Rays reliever Mason Montgomery that appeared to be low based on the K-zone box on the YES Network broadcast.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Chisholm said he "got fired up" because he really thought it should have been called a ball. He added he didn't feel like his immediate comments to Bacon warranted an ejection, but "probably after" the signal was made he said some things to justify it.

The social-media post will likely result in discipline from MLB. One of the rules under MLB's policy states league-affiliated employees may not display or transmit content "that contains obscene or sexually explicit language, images, or acts."

This was Chisholm's first time being ejected from a game as a member of the Yankees. He was acquired in a July 2024 trade with the Miami Marlins.

Chisholm is hitting .169/.272/.451 with six homers in 19 games this season. Despite his ejection, the Yankees won their fourth straight game.

Rangers' Patrick Corbin Nearly Missed Start After Foot Injury Caused by Venomous Bite

Los Angeles Angels v Texas Rangers

This MLB season has already seen a handful of strange injuries and ailments, from Freddie Freeman re-injuring his ankle after slipping in the shower to Cody Bellinger getting food poisoning from chicken wings.

Texas Rangers starting pitcher Patrick Corbin added to the list of absurd injuries on Wednesday.

Corbin had trouble walking before his start against the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday because of what he and the Rangers believe was "venom" from a bite on his foot two days before, per ESPN.

"They said something bit me, but I still don't know what it was," Corbin told reporters Thursday. "I've never had anything like that. It was super weird."

Manager Bruce Bochy said it was "50/50" whether Corbin would be able to pitch on Wednesday because of swelling and a visible bite mark on his foot.

"He could hardly walk when he came into the clubhouse," Bochy told reporters. "Some kind of venom got in there. Not sure if it was a spider or what."

"It was really bad in the morning," Corbin said. "Just a really swollen foot. ... I wasn't sure if I was going to throw that morning. My wife was really concerned. I came in early [Wednesday] to get some treatment going and [went] from there."

Corbin said the pain was "tolerable" after having his ankle wrapped, and he was able to get on the mound, where he picked up six strikeouts and allowed just five hits and one run in 5.1 innings.

Though Corbin said there was still soreness in his ankle on Thursday, he believes he'll be ready to go for his next start.

Corbin, a 13-year veteran, is in his first season with the Rangers after spending the last six years with the Washington Nationals. In two starts, he has a 3.86 ERA and a 1.39 WHIP, picking up his first win against the Angels on Wednesday.

Royals vs. Tigers Betting Odds, Player Props and Picks for April 17

Joe Tansey
Apr 17, 2025

The Kansas City Royals begin their four-game series against the Detroit Tigers on Thursday as one of the worst road teams in Major League Baseball.

Kansas City is 2-7 away from Kauffman Stadium and just got swept at Yankee Stadium, but the matchup in play on Thursday at Comerica Park suits the Royals.

Michael Lorenzen has been a steady force on the mound that the Royals can trust to get beyond the fifth inning.

The Kansas City lineup owns some favorable numbers against Reese Olson, most notably Bobby Witt Jr., who has incredible head-to-head splits versus the Detroit right-hander.

Michael Lorenzen Over 15.5 Outs Recorded (-125)

Ad Placeholder

Michael Lorenzen lasted at least 5.1 innings in each of his three starts to begin the season.

That’s the target again on Thursday to clear the over on his outs recorded prop.

Lorenzen has allowed his share of hits (17), but he hasn’t allowed more than three earned runs in any of his appearances.

A year ago, Lorenzen went five and 5.2 innings in two starts versus Detroit. He only allowed three hits in the appearance in Detroit, an outing that would’ve lasted longer had he not walked five batters.

Ad Placeholder

Four of the last six starters to face the Tigers went at least five innings. The Tigers lineup has produced 15 runs in the last five games, but nine of them came on Monday.

As long as Lorenzen avoids a high volume of walks, he can cruise into the sixth inning against a Detroit lineup trending in the wrong direction.

Bobby Witt Jr. Over 1.5 Total Bases (-105)

Betting the over on Bobby Witt Jr.’s total bases is a good move on almost any night because he’s one of the best hitters in baseball.

It’s an even better bet when you look at Witt’s history against Reese Olson.

Ad Placeholder

The superstar shortstop owns a .545 batting average, 1.902 OPS, two home runs and six RBIs in 11 career at-bats versus Olson.

Witt owns a nine-game hitting streak in which he’s had five extra-base hits.

At least one hit seems like a guarantee against Olson, and with the gap-to-gap power he has, it’s also worth looking into betting him to record a double (+310) or triple (+1000).

Seven of his 22 hits this season have been doubles, and one of his 11 triples last season came in Detroit.

Royals ML (+130)

Ad Placeholder

Witt isn't the only Royal with strong numbers against Olson. Michael Massey (2-for-8, 1 HR) and Maikel Garcia (3-for-10, 1 HR) and Kyle Isbel (2-for-5) have had success against the Detroit righty.

Olson has allowed 10 earned runs, 17 hits and eight walks in 15 innings this season.

Kansas City does have a bad road record and it is second-to-last in batting average against righties this season, but the familiarity against Olson will help the Royals get out to an early lead and out of their road rut.

Dodgers' Shohei Ohtani 'Still A Couple Months Away' from Pitching Return, Roberts Says

Colorado Rockies v Los Angeles Dodgers

Los Angeles Dodgers star Shohei Ohtani is "still a couple months away" from returning to the mound, manager Dave Roberts said on Thursday.

"I know that's still vague, but we're just trying to get to the next step, get to the next step and see where we're at," Roberts said on The Jim Rome Show. "But certainly expect him to pitch for us this year and through the postseason."

Ohtani has not pitched since August of 2023 when he tore his UCL while with the Los Angeles Angels. Roberts was a bit more optimistic about Ohtani's timeline this offseason, saying that he could be back on the mound by May.

Ad Placeholder

After that update from Roberts in February, he said in March that Ohtani's return to the mound is still "a ways off."

Ohtani, who won his third MVP award a season ago, has become so dominant at the plate that it's easy to forget how good he is on the mound. In 2023, he recorded a 3.14 ERA and 1.06 WHIP across 23 starts, picking up a 10-5 record. In 2022, he notched a career-best 2.33 ERA and 1.01 WHIP, going 15-9 with 28 starts and finishing fourth in AL Cy Young voting.

Ad Placeholder

While the Dodgers haven't gotten Ohtani on the mound yet, he's earned his lucrative contract at the plate. He's coming off a season in which he hit .310/.390/.646 with 54 home runs and 130 RBI, adding 59 stolen bases as Los Angeles took home the World Series.

Through 20 games this year, Ohtani has six homers, eight RBI and five stolen bases with a .288 batting average, on pace for another 40-home-run, 40-steal season. The Dodgers are 14-6 on the year, sitting in third place in a competitive NL West.
