The Impact Newcastle's Siem De Jong Can Have in His Debut Premier League Season

Jul 21, 2014

This summer, the Dutch attacking midfielder and striker Siem de Jong moved from Ajax to Newcastle United for an undisclosed fee.

De Jong, who is a product of Ajax’s famous youth academy, will add a variety of options to Newcastle United’s front line and midfield, and will do his best to make fans forget about Yohan Cabaye, who left Newcastle for Paris Saint-Germain earlier this year.

We know that, throughout the years, De Jong has played in different positions for Ajax. But where is he at his best? What kind of player is De Jong, and what kind of impact will he have on Newcastle United?

Getting his football education from Ajax’s youth academy, De Jong was trained to be a classic No. 10. That means he’s used to functioning as the central pivot in attacking midfield in a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Under manager Frank de Boer, however, Ajax’s first team has long stopped using a classic No. 10. These days, Ajax’s philosophy has evolved into a 4-3-3 formation with one defensive midfielder, and two central midfielders.

Normally, then, De Jong would function as one of the two central midfielders. This meant that he was expected to move up and down the pitch a lot. Not quite a box-to-box player, but not really a classic No. 10 either, awareness and intelligent positioning was required of De Jong.

Ajax achieved some notable success with De Jong and Christian Eriksen—who now plays for Tottenham Hotspur—playing in central midfield. With De Boer as their manager, the Amsterdam-based club have won four Dutch league titles in a row. The performances of De Jong and Eriksen, who functioned as the backbone of De Boer’s team until last season, undeniably contributed to Ajax’s title wins.

But De Jong also had something else to contribute during Ajax’s campaigns. When the club ran out of strikers after a series of unfortunate injuries, De Jong stepped up and took over as the main man up front.

As a striker, De Jong functioned in a role similar to the role of false nine, dropping deep from up front to take on the opposition’s defence from a position in midfield. What’s more, De Jong would also function as a target man, providing link-up opportunities for Ajax’s inside forwards—and, of course, Eriksen, who still played behind him.

De Jong would regularly switch between positions, during and in between matches, and it never seemed like De Boer was asking too much of De Jong. On the contrary, De Jong seemed to relish the opportunity to develop abilities that correlate with different aspects of the game.

First and foremost, then, Newcastle United have signed a creative and versatile player with a high workrate. Trained as a classical No. 10, but matured into a central midfielder who can also play as a striker, De Jong has the intelligence to function in a myriad of positions and tactical roles.

Wherever he plays, though, De Jong will often attempt to find space in the box and set up chances through short passes and clever one-two combinations. Whether playing as a midfielder or playing as an attacker, De Jong is always a creator.

In many ways, De Jong is the sort of player the Ajax academy aspires to produce on a regular basis. Above all, he knows what goes on on a pitch, and perhaps more than most players, he knows what is expected of players in certain positions.

Why Remy Cabella Was Right to Join Newcastle United

Despite having the bitter words of his ex-employer ringing in his ears, Remy Cabella is waxing lyrical about his switch to Newcastle United before a ball has been kicked.

Montpellier owner Louis Nicollin has criticised the 24-year-old’s decision to move to Tyneside and admitted he "wasn’t happy" about the midfielder's choice of club.

But if his interview with Anthony Marshall on the Magpies’ official website is anything to go by, the resentful noises coming out of the Stade de la Mosson boardroom have failed to dampen the player’s enthusiasm:

It is a magnificent place.

I have seen lots of photographs of the supporters and the black and white strip, but you cannot see the ambience in photos and that is something I am really looking forward to experiencing.

I wanted to join a great English club and that is why I have arrived here. I'm looking forward to pulling on the shirt and playing in this magnificent stadium, and I will give this club my maximum.

I have heard nothing but good things about Newcastle United from everyone I spoke to.

Everyone, that is, except Nicollin.

The long-serving supremo of MHSC is renowned for speaking his mind, and he famously referred to AC Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani as "Kojak" on Canal+ in 2012, as reported by Football Italia at the time.

The jibe was in relation to a bid for Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa—a defender he sold to Newcastle just six months later—and since then the 71-year-old has been nothing but negative when it comes to the Toon.

When United first moved to land Cabella back in January, Nicollin replied with a typically ill-judged put-down, insisting the attacking midfielder would find life boring in the North-East.

And now that the international has put pen-to-paper on a six-year deal at St. James’ Park, his inherent aversion to the Geordies has reared its ugly head once more.

As revealed by The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards, Nicollin said:

He wanted to go. I wasn’t happy, but I told him, 'Congratulations'. In England, there is Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United, which are above Newcastle.

Personally, I would not go to Newcastle. But hey, I’ll see him when he plays against a club in London!

But Cabella’s rhetoric flies in the face of his former employer, and an eagerness to understand his new surroundings, as well as make an impact has gone down well with supporters ahead of the new campaign.

As revealed by the Daily Star’s Ian Murtagh, former left-back John Beresford has already likened the playmaker to Magpies favourite David Ginola—a compliment not to be taken lightly.

And if Cabella enjoys half the popularity Ginola did during his spell with United in the 1990s, his decision to join will be fully justified, and it will leave Nicollin red-faced once more.

Sunderland Fans Raise Funds After Fans of Rivals Newcastle United Die on MH17

Jul 19, 2014

Sunderland fans put club allegiance to one side with a classy gesture after two Newcastle fans lost their lives in the MH17 air tragedy.

The two fans, John Alder and Liam Sweeney, were travelling to New Zealand to watch the club's pre-season tour.

The Magpies confirmed their loss on their website and expressed their condolences, while Tim Krul was amongst the players to pay their respects on Twitter:

2 Geordies on plane MH17 travelling to watch Nufc in New Zealand. RIP John Adler and Liam Sweeney.. Our thoughts are with all the families!

— Tim Krul (@TimKrul) July 18, 2014

Fans of Sunderland, writing on the SMB supporter message board, decided to see whether they could arrange a floral tribute of their own to the duo. Their appeal on GoFundMe read:

We may be Sunderland fans, who traditionally have deep rivalry with Newcastle, but there are things far more important than any football games. The incredibly sad news that has emerged this week about two Newcastle fans who have passed has left us all shocked and deeply saddened. Donating here will help pay for a floral tribute to those fans and to unity between the two clubs. Any extra money will be donated to a charity that has yet to be decided.

The gesture, originally started with a target of raising £100, has at the time of writing raised £4,500 and is rising swiftly.

Newcastle play two games Down Under as part of their pre-season preparations.

How Emmanuel Riviere Will Fit in at Newcastle United

The recruitment drive at Newcastle United continued at breakneck speed this week, with striker Emmanuel Riviere the latest new face at St. James’ Park.

In a department that needed overhauling following a number of departures this summer, the Frenchman’s arrival has been greeted with understandable optimism.

And following confirmation of his move from AS Monaco, the big question doing the rounds on Tyneside surrounds where he will fit into Alan Pardew’s starting XI.

Used predominantly as a forward throughout his career so far, the 24-year-old is renowned for his pace, and he could be utilised in a number of positions by the Magpies.

As an out-and-out frontman, Riviere’s record is respectable. At the Stade Louis II last season, a return of 10 goals in Ligue 1 made him the club’s top scorer ahead of World Cup star James Rodriguez and £50 million man Radamel Falcao.

Throw in the fact he only started 19 games, and the figures look even more impressive, but can that consistency be applied to the challenging surroundings of the Premier League?

With Papiss Cisse the only other senior striker on the Toon’s books at present—and with a knee injury hampering his pre-season— Riviere’s place in Pardew’s attack looks assured.

But should United move to bring in additional firepower between now and the end of August, his considerable speed and athleticism could shift him to either flank as part of a front three.

Depending on his manager’s boldness, a central role for fellow new-boy Siem De Jong—backed up by the security of two holding midfielders—could provide the perfect ammunition.

And with Remy Cabella’s trickery and flair offsetting Riviere’s physical approach, the goals could flow for whoever fills the No. 9 role once next season gets under way.

In a more orthodox 4-4-2 formation, the former France under-21 international would need considerable help, though De Jong is no stranger to providing such supportive duties.

Whatever position he is handed, the former Saint-Etienne and Toulouse man is brimming with confidence following his £6 million switch from the Cote d’Azur principality.

Speaking to nufcTV, the club’s online television channel, Riviere said:

I am a striker who is fast and strong, and I score goals. I think my characteristics are good for the Premier League.

I love space to run and tire out defenders, and I work for the team. I want to adapt quickly to the Premier League because it is not Ligue 1. They are very different.

Why Daryl Janmaat Is a Good Fit at Newcastle United

Newcastle United have moved quickly to counteract Mathieu Debuchy’s imminent move to Arsenal, and in Daryl Janmaat, the Magpies are set to land the ideal replacement.

Debuchy’s switch to the capital is already done and dusted, according to the Daily Mail’s Simon Jones, and all that remains is official confirmation from Arsene Wenger and Co.

But far from brooding over the Frenchman’s departure, the Toon’s hierarchy have moved quickly this week and are set to go Dutch with the right-back’s successor.

Fresh from starring for the Netherlands at this summer’s World Cup, Daryl Janmaat is poised to put pen-to-paper at St. James’ Park, with a long-term deal set to be announced.

News of the deal was reported on Tuesday lunchtime, with Mark Douglas posting footage of the former Heerenveen man being driven out of the club’s training ground via ChronicleLive.

And with the £5 million transfer due to be rubber-stamped before the squad fly out to New Zealand at the end of this week, Newcastle’s timing could not have been better.

An attacking full-back who began his career at Feyenoord before re-joining them in 2012, Janmaat’s style is well suited to the hurly-burly nature of the Premier League.

Performances for his country in Brazil highlighted his obvious attacking instincts, but in a defensive capacity, the Leidschendam-born star looked formidable.

Used primarily as a wing-back by international boss Louis van Gaal, Janmaat made four appearances in South America, including in the semi-final clash with Argentina.

When directly compared to Debuchy at the tournament, he won just as many tackles, made more interceptions, created five more chances and chipped in with two assists.

And in an interview with Lee Ryder at the Evening Chronicle, Will Burns from the TotalDutchFootball.com website was adamant that Janmaat will be a suitable replacement. He said:

Toon fans will notice instantly that he is a similar player.

The 24-year-old always has the desire to surge forward, and will look to overlap the winger or cut inside to look to play the best ball possible. However, unlike most forward thinking full-backs, Janmaat can cover well in defence.

He is physically strong, so he should cope well with the hustle and bustle of the Premier League. Last season he created 36 chances for Feyenoord, in which five of them became assists and as well as notching twice in 40 appearances.

Daryl Janmaat to Newcastle: Latest Transfer Details, Reaction and More

Newcastle United have wrapped up the signing of defender Daryl Janmaat for a suggested fee of €7.5 million, it's emerged.

The Feyenoord figure had been linked with a move to Tyneside for some time, but after completing his duties with the Netherlands at the World Cup, Kristan Heneage confirmed the move:

Janmaat has put pen to paper on a six-year deal at St. James' Park and comes in as the successor to Mathieu Debuchy, whom Neil Cameron of Chronicle Live says has completed a £10 million move to Arsenal.

Alan Pardew has moved quickly to fill the void at right-back, and a player of Janmaat's quality for half the sum they received for Debuchy is a fine piece of business.

Squawka and OptaJohan show just how rounded the Dutchman has shown himself to be over the past year, featuring well at both club and international level:

Sky Sports Football continued with a look at his performance from the 2014 World Cup:

Janmaat follows countryman Siem de Jong and former Montpellier playmaker Remy Cabella as another high-profile signing in the northeast, with the Magpies hoping to improve upon their 10th-place Premier League finish last term.

It's a swift change in approach from the summer of 2013, which saw the loan signing of Queens Park Rangers striker Loic Remy become their only major move of the entire window.

Pardew is evidently eager to ensure this summer isn't as bereft of business, and the mid-season departure of Yohan Cabaye to Paris Saint-Germain will have provided some funds for the club to make moves of their own.

Newcastle have also signed Jack Colback as a free transfer from local rivals Sunderland, as well as making the lower-profile acquisition of former Tenerife attacker Ayoze Perez.

Janmaat will now join up with his new teammates ahead of Newcastle's pre-season tour, taking them to New Zealand and Germany before coming back to four warm-up fixtures in England.

Newcastle Reportedly Looking to Sell Hatem Ben Arfa After Remy Cabella Signing

Newcastle's Hatem Ben Arfa could have played his last game for the north-east giants after the club confirmed the capture of Remy Cabella.

Lee Ryder of The Chronicle writes that the French international has been left out of the Geordies' pre-season tour and has been forced to train with the youth team.

Ryder also confirms that Sylvain Marveaux and Shane Ferguson have joined Ben Arfa in training with the younger players, putting their futures also in doubt.

The club confirmed Cabella's signing late on Sunday via their Twitter feed:

Ben Arfa has been something of an enigma since arriving from Marseille back in 2010. The mercurial attacker has put in some wonderful displays for Alan Pardew's team, but injury destroyed his chances of an extended run in the side.

It now seems that Newcastle have lost patience and have decided to move forward without the player in their ranks.

Despite this, Simon Bird of the Mirror recently wrote that the French international will resist any efforts to be forced out of St James' Park and will try to sit out the last year of his deal.

Bird says that Newcastle are willing to sell for as little as £3 million, but Ben Arfa will prefer to leave as a free agent, in 12 months' time.

The player only started for Newcastle on 13 occasions last season, per WhoScored.com, spending the majority of his year on Pardew's bench. He did manage to score three times and collect as many assists during the period, but as the Geordies struggled he failed to make a lasting impact.

Cabella joins Newcastle after a strong season for Montpellier, in Ligue 1. The 24-year-old Frenchman, who can play across all of the attacking midfield positions, hit an impressive 14 goals in 37 games in the league, per WhoScored.com, providing five assists.

He is the type of creative player that Pardew needs as he looks to revamp his squad.

Ryder also tweeted about his approval of Cabella joining Newcastle, saying he will link up well with the Geordies' other new signing:

In addition, Newcastle are in for Emmanuel Riviere of Monaco for a reported £6 million, per Ryder's report.

The writer quotes the talented individual as saying:

"England is my dream since I was a kid. People compare me to Thierry Henry, and that is a big compliment. If I can achieve half of his career I will be happy."

Despite all of his talent, Ben Arfa has failed at Newcastle just as he did at his previous two clubs, Marseille and Lyon. At both the French sides he showed glimpses of world-class talent but has never had the discipline to kick on and further his reputation.

It is strange that the player would be happy to sit on the sidelines for a full season, but his motivation to leave on a free transfer may be a bigger goal than actually playing.

This is a sad set of events for Ben Arfa, who has dazzled in the Premier League at times, but it seems that his future lies away from the north-east.
