Pickleball Slam 2

Tennis legends Andre Agassi, Steffi Graf, Andy Roddick, and Eugenie Bouchard will descend upon the Michelob ULTRA Arena at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas on Sunday for Pickleball Slam 3: The Duel in the Desert.

Agassi will look to remain undefeated, entering the event as the two-time defending champion. He and Graf will look to run it back in 2025, partnering up to battle the man Agassi partnered with to win his first title, Roddick, and Bouchard.

Can the younger tandem best the opposition or will Agassi once again the winner's portion of the $1 million purse in this extravaganza featuring the fastest-growing sport in the country?

Duel in the Desert and a Growing Passtime

In 2023, Agassi and Roddick ushered in the Pickleball Slam event by besting John McEnroe and Michael Chang to become the inaugural champions.

The event sold out Hard Rock Live at Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Florida. It drew a record crowd and outperformed other prominently featured televised sporting events held on the same day.

One year later, Agassi continued his winning ways by partnering with Graf to defeat the returning McEnroe and Maria Sharapova in a broadcast that once again outperformed other televised sporting events held on the same day and, again, drew a capacity crowd at the Hard Rock.

Three years into the spectacular, Roddick returns to challenge the dominant Agassi, looking to tie his former partner with two titles. It will not be easy as Bouchard has yet to compete on this stage, against a tandem that emerged victoriously from last year's championship match.

The event reflects the growing popularity of pickleball in the United States.

In a January 2025 report, USA Pickleball announced the addition of 4,000 new locations dedicated to growing the sport, raising the total north of 15,000 courts across the country.

Membership in the organization topped 62,000, with a diverse collection of players of different ages and skill levels. USA Pickleball sanctioned 142 tournaments in 2024.

Professional athletes from every major sporting league in the country have noticed the game's momentum and have invested in it.

Seven-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady, four-time NBA champion LeBron James, and three-time Super Bowl winner Patrick Mahomes invested in the Pro Pickleball League in 2023.

Current New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson is one of the co-founders of the Celebrity Pickleball Bash, which also features ambassadors Terrell Owens, CC Sabathia, Brandi Chastain, John Isner, and actor Mario Lopez, among others.

Against that background, Agassi, Roddick, Graf, and Bouchard have the opportunity to convert skeptics into fans and positively affect the game's evolution and the perception of the sport by live and television audiences.

As the 2024 USA Pickleball National Championships continue throughout the weekend, new champions in the men's and women's pro divisions have already been crowned.

Chris Haworth continued his stellar season with a straight-set victory over Patrick Kawka in the men's gold-medal match, including an 11-1 romp in the first set. Kawka was able to keep things close in the second set, but Haworth held on 14-12 for the win.

Even in defeat, Kawka had a terrific run in the tournament that included a win over Grayson Goldin, the No. 2 ranked player in the field, in the semifinals.

Haworth didn't start playing in pickleball tournaments until March 2023, but it took him just over a year to win his first PPA Tour gold medal at the Orange County Cup in June.

On the women's side, Bobbi Oshiro capped off her impressive run with a gold medal. She earned a spot in the final by knocking out top-seed Megan Fudge in straight sets in the semifinal.

Oshiro scored another straight-set win over Alexa Schull in the gold-medal match for the biggest win of her singles career.

Fudge and Goldin were able to rebound from their defeats to win bronze in the singles pro competition. Fudge defeated Amanda Hendry in the women's bronze-medal match. Goldin was able to hold off Max Green in the men's bronze-medal match.

Oshiro started playing pickleball in 2020 and took part in her first pro tournament the following year.

The action from the Arizona Athletic Grounds continues on Saturday with a full day of mixed doubles competition, as well as the traditional celebrity matches that includes former NFL players Jake Plummer and Eric Decker, former NHL player Shane Doan and six-time Olympic gold medalist Amy Van Dyken.

The Pickleball Slam returned for a second consecutive year on Sunday night, as four tennis legends with 42 Grand Slam titles between them competed in the final match for a $1 million purse.

Andre Agassi and Steffi Graf defeated John McEnroe and Maria Sharapova to win the slam. There were three doubles matches in total, with members of each team competing alongside former tennis players and current pickleball aficionados James Blake and Jack Sock.

The first two matches were worth one point apiece, while the final was worth two points. Agassi and Sock defeated McEnroe and Blake 11-7, 9-11, 11-8 in the opening match of the evening. The second match was won by Graf and Sock, who took down Sharapova and Blake 9-11, 11-8, 17-5.

The team helmed by Agassi and Graf, his wife, entered the final match with a 2-0 lead. The duo was able to take down McEnroe and Sharapova 11-7, 13-11 to win the purse with a 4-0 victory. McEnroe was unable to earn his revenge, as his team previously fell to Agassi and Andy Roddick in April 2023 during the inaugural Pickleball Slam.

Fans were excited to watch the four iconic former tennis players duel in Hollywood, Florida.

Although Graf wasn't officially scheduled to play in the first slam, she subbed in for a short time. Now with her headlining Pickleball Slam 2, she discussed the challenge of switching sports prior to the event.

"Goodness, I'm still trying to unlearn [tennis]," Graf said on Friday, per Mark Bechtel of Sports Illustrated. "I have not had an easy time. I want to move around. I want to hit the ball. I don't want to slow down and be patient, waiting for the right moment to attack. I tend to want to keep my feet moving. That's what I learned in tennis."

However, she looked comfortable on Sunday night as the couple was able to help secure a victory in the slam.

The 2023 Biofreeze USA Pickleball National Championships wrapped up Sunday after seven days of competition at Brookhaven Country Club in Farmers Branch, Texas.

Some familiar faces took home hardware at the 2023 edition of the tournament but some new blood was injected, specifically in the men's singles tournament.

J.W. Johnson of Florida took home the men's singles title after taking down Jaume Martinez Vich in a hard-fought, three set matchup.

Johnson became the first player since 2016 not named Ben Johns, Collin Johns or Tyson McGuffin to take home the national championship.

The women's doubles championship saw the continued dominance of Anna Leigh Waters and Catherine Parenteau, as the World No. 1 and No. 3 players took home the women's doubles championships.

The win capped off an undefeated tournament run from the two and would not be the last time they saw each other Sunday.

Neither Johns brother was able to take it home in the men's singles but the two put together a dominant performance in the men's doubles.

The No. 1 ranked duo took home the title for the second consecutive season.

Mixed doubles saw the tandem of Ben Johns and Waters take home the title with a three-set win over James Ignatowich and Anna Bright.

However, the best match of the day may have been saved for last.

Waters vs. Parenteau to end the day was a highly anticipated matchup and the three-set match lived up to the hype.

Waters took an 11-6 set one victory, but Parenteau stayed strong and won the second set 11-7. She then took a 7-1 lead in the third set and appeared poise to pull off the upset.

Instead, Waters battled back and staved off four championship point opportunities for Parenteau to eventually emerge victorious by a score of 12-10.

This was Waters' third victory of the day, meaning she claimed another triple crown to add to her collection.

The 2023 Celebrity Pickleball Showdown took place on Tuesday in Dallas, and it pitted two former Dallas Mavericks teammates against one another.

Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki and Mavs head coach Jason Kidd were on opposite sides during the tournament. Nowitzki and tennis star John Isner were victorious over Kidd and 2022 Masters champion Scottie Scheffler.

Football analyst and former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo and Dallas Stars center Tyler Seguin were also participating in the event. At times, partners were alternated, allowing the athletes to team with pickleball pros Ben Johns and Anna Leigh Waters.

Scheffler even surprisingly got the upper hand over Johns, who is the No. 1 pickleball player in the world:

While pickleball is considered to be one of the fastest-growing sports in the world, not everyone enjoyed the showcase:

Still, pickleball is here to stay. The 2023 USA Pickleball Championships are running this week and will end on Sunday, Nov. 12.

Lil Wayne's ever-growing sports fandom has added a new team.

The Grammy-winning rapper was announced as the latest owner of the Texas Ranchers of Major League Pickeleball, joining a group that also includes Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons and golfer Scottie Scheffler.

"Pickleball is the moment and I'm excited to be part of the Texas Ranchers ownership group," Lil Wayne said in a statement. "I've enjoyed watching and couldn't pass up the opportunity to join this team of owners."

Pickleball is one of the United States' fastest-growing sports, and Major League Pickleball is rapidly expanding as interest grows. The league expanded to 24 teams for the 2023 season and has high-profile investors in the sports world, highlighted by LeBron James, Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes.

Lil Wayne is the most prominent rapper to join in the pickleball craze, but it should not come as a surprise. The 41-year-old has been a fixture in the sports world for more than two decades, making appearances at events and littering his rhymes with references to top athletes.

With his long-awaited Tha Carter VI album seemingly on the way, it would not be a surprise to see the Ranchers receive a shout-out when Wayne finally drops his latest LP.

Superstar rapper Drake and actor Michael B. Jordan are among the new investors in Major League Pickleball's Brooklyn Aces.

Boardroom.com's Shlomo Sprung reported Thursday that Drake, Jordan and Translation CEO Steve Stoute are among the new financial backers for the pickleball franchise, which is owned by Phoenix Suns star Kevin Durant and his business manager, Rich Kleiman.

Kleiman expressed excitement over the new group of investors in a statement released Thursday, saying:

"We're thrilled to have this incredible group of investors join the Brooklyn Aces as we continue to grow the team and raise the profile of Major League Pickleball as a whole. It's the idea of bringing people in that we could share in this with and utilize resources as the Aces evolve. Our investor group includes some of the savviest entrepreneurs in the business, and having this network on our cap table positions us to be successful."

Drake, 36, is among the most successful rappers of all time, having won five Grammy Awards, six American Music Awards and 34 Billboard Music Awards.

The 36-year-old Jordan is one of Hollywood's fastest-rising stars, known for his roles in the Creed and Black Panther film series.

Durant and Kleiman were announced as the owners of the Aces expansion team in October when KD was still a member of the Brooklyn Nets. The Nets sent him to the Suns ahead of the trade deadline, but he's still rooted in Brooklyn thanks to his affiliation to the Aces.

Pickleball, which is similar to tennis in many ways but is played with paddles and a wiffle ball, was named the fastest-growing sport in the United States in a February survey from the Sports & Fitness Industry Association.

Hunter Johnson, Parris Todd Win at 2023 USA Pickleball National Championships Series

Championship Sunday at the Association for Pickleball Professionals (APP) Newport Beach Open in Newport Beach, California, did not disappoint.

The tournament is one of the National Championships Series events throughout the year for USA Pickleball, and a record-setting number of people were on hand. As CBS Los Angeles noted, the more than 1,400 players across various levels made it the APP's largest-ever tournament.

While some at the Tennis and Pickleball Club in Newport Beach were there for their first tournament experience, a number of the sport's biggest stars also participated.

Sunday alone brought high-profile matches with championships in the women's pro singles, men's pro singles, mixed pro doubles, men's pro doubles and women's pro doubles taking center stage.

Here is a look at Sunday's marquee results:

  • Women's Pro Singles: Parris Todd defeats Megan Fudge
  • Men's Pro Singles: Hunter Johnson defeats Quang Duong
  • Mixed Pro Doubles: Parris Todd/Hunter Johnson defeat Allison Harris/Andre Mick
  • Men's Pro Doubles: Pesa Teoni/Andrei Daescu defeat Spencer Lanier/Richard Livornese Jr.
  • Women's Pro Doubles: Parris Todd/Simone Jardim defeat Rianna Valdes/Evgenia Erokhina

Fans couldn't have asked for a better showdown in the women's pro's singles gold-medal match than the one between top-seeded Parris Todd and second-seeded Megan Fudge.

Todd wasted no time seizing initial control with an 11-2 win in the first game, and it seemed like she would cruise to the title. However, Fudge bounced right back in the second game and forced a decisive third.

The top seed ultimately prevailed, but it was a hard-fought win.

Todd wasn't the only No. 1 seed to take home a single's title Sunday, as Hunter Johnson defeated Quang Duong on the men's side. It was a back-and-forth first game, but he had little trouble with the qualifier by the end and captured gold.

It was the start of a busy day for both Johnson and, especially, Todd.

They were playing partners in the mixed pro doubles final match, while Todd also took the court for the women's pro doubles as playing partners with Simone Jardim.

Perhaps fatigue was something of an issue when Allison Harris and Andre Mick took the first game in the mixed pro doubles final match. But it was only a matter of time before Todd and Johnson found their footing again, and they took the next two games to win the second title of the day for each player.

It also moved Todd a step closer to a Sunday triple crown.

Someone not named Todd or Johnson finally won a title when Pesa Teoni and Andrei Daescu defeated Spencer Lanier and Richard Livornese Jr. in the men's pro doubles match.

The top-seeded pair had no trouble with the challenger and won in two quick games.

There was only one way for Championship Sunday to end, though, and that was with Todd taking home her Triple Crown. She and Jardim cruised past Rianna Valdes and Evgenia Erokhina in the women's pro doubles gold-medal match in two games.

Ex-Bucks Owner Lasry: Pickleball, Upstart Sports Could Offer Higher Returns Than NBA

May 18, 2023

Marc Lasry's foray into the NBA ownership ranks was a lucrative pursuit, but he believes his investment in pickleball could yield a bigger bang for his buck.

"I think there's massive opportunities in sports, but I think those opportunities are in smaller teams," he told Bloomberg TV.

Lasry explained how staple sports franchises such as the ones in the NBA could see their value climb by 5 to 10 percent each year. He contrasted that with the opportunity for larger growth in a sport like pickleball.

"Pickleball three years ago was $100,000," he said. "Today, it's $10 million, so that's 100 times."

Lasry isn't alone in his bullish outlook. A number of notable athletes and celebrities have invested in pickleball in some form.

Major League Pickleball founder Steve Kuhn made a bold claim in March when he said viewership for the league could surge within the next five years and challenge the likes of MLS, MLB and the NHL.

That seems unlikely given pickleball is still in its nascent stages as a televised sport. But Lasry laid out how those on the ground floor have seen a strong financial return already.
