Gregg Popovich on Spurs Making a Trade amid NBA Rumors: 'Why Would We Do That?'

Dec 16, 2023
SAN ANTONIO, TX - DECEMBER 13: Head Coach Gregg Popovich of the San Antonio Spurs talks with Victor Wembanyama #1 and Devin Vassell #24 during the game against the Los Angeles Lakers on December 13, 2023 at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio, Texas. Don't expect the San Antonio Spurs to be active prior to the Feb. 8 trade deadline, per comments head coach Gregg Popovich made to reporters before his team's 116-96 home win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Friday evening.

"No, I doubt it," Popovich said when asked if his team would be in the trade market, per Tom Orsborn of the San Antonio Express-News.

"Why would we do that?...Get a vet or two and go win a championship this year? I'm going to go think about that," Popovich added.

The trade market won't be short on veterans this year, with names such as Pascal Siakam and OG Anunoby, Zach LaVine, John Collins and Jordan Clarkson being floated out there.

However, the Spurs are 4-20. No trade is going to turn them into a playoff contender at this point, let alone a championship one. Conceivably, the Spurs could ship off some of their veterans, but hanging onto their young talent is paramount as the team goes through a rebuilding phase.

"Our focus is not immediate other than individual development and team concepts," Popovich added. "But if there's a trade that would make sense both now and for long-term, of course, we look at it. (General manager) Brian Wright and his guys are probably doing that already."

It's clear what the 2023-24 season was all about for the Spurs, and that's developing their young talent, led by burgeoning superstar Victor Wembanyama. Per NBA.com, the Spurs entered the season as the league's youngest team (23.52 years of age on average).

There will be massive growing pains along the way, as the recent losing streak shows. But ultimately, this isn't a year where the Spurs will be making big moves at the deadline.

That may be the case down the road as the team gels around Wembanyama and realizes its potential, but for now, the team moves forward and works for a brighter future.

Victor Wembanyama is continuing to find his footing in the NBA, and he added to his rookie highlight reel Monday night.

Despite the loss, Wembanyama gave fans something to be excited about as the San Antonio Spurs as they took on the Houston Rockets.

In the third quarter of Monday night's game, Wembanyama threw down a nasty poster dunk over Rockets' center Alperen Sengun, sending social media into a frenzy.

But it was more than Wembenyama's posterizing dunk that had fans excited. He also pulled in a whopping 18 rebounds and blocked five shots, giving the Spurs' faithful assurance that the rookie has more to offer than just highlights.

Wembanyama and the Spurs couldn't come away with the win, dropping their 17th-straight game 93-82, but it was another exciting showing from the rookie. He finished the night with 15 points, 18 rebounds and 5 blocks, giving fans something to look forward to as the young Spurs' core continues to develop.

San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama recorded his tenth double-double of the season in record time during Friday night's 121-112 loss to the Chicago Bulls.

The No. 1 pick of the 2023 draft started at center and put up 10 points and 11 rebounds in just 13 minutes of the first half.

Wembanyama is the first rookie this season to record a double-double in a half, per StatMuse.

He finished the game with 21 points, 20 rebounds and four blocks in his team's 16th straight loss. He became the youngest player in NBA history to record a 20-20 double-double, per NBA.com.

Despite the Spurs' inability to hold on to a 11-point first-half lead, fans were impressed with Wembanyama's first career 20/20.

Wembanyama's performance led fans to urge head coach Gregg Popovich to continue playing the star rookie at center.

Nikola Vucevic led Chicago with 21 points as the Bulls improved to 9-14.

The Spurs fall to 3-18 with the loss and will have to fight to end the ongoing losing streak Monday against Amen Thompson and the Houston Rockets.

A Texas district attorney's office announced on Friday the dismissal of indecent exposure charges against Los Angeles Clippers guard Joshua Primo due to insufficient evidence.

Bexar County Criminal District Attorney Joe Gonzales said prosecutors "determined that there was simply not enough evidence to prove the required elements of the charge," according to a release shared by the Los Angeles Times' Andrew Greif.

The former San Antonio Spurs player had been accused of "exposing himself to one individual on five separate occasions over the course of several months," according to Gonzales' office.

Primo has not played in the NBA since October 2022, when he was abruptly released by the Spurs following allegations he had exposed himself to Dr. Hillary Cauthen, a woman working as the team's consulting psychologist, during private therapy sessions.

Cauthen sued the Spurs for allegedly ignoring her "repeated reports" of the incidents. The lawsuit was settled in November 2022.

News that Primo would sign a two-way contract with the Clippers was reported on September 29, hours after the NBA announced his four-game suspension without pay for behavior "detrimental to the league."

The NBA said league investigations confirmed Primo had "engaged in inappropriate and offensive behavior by exposing himself to women," but noted the former Spurs player "maintains that his conduct was not intentional."

Primo signed a standard contract for two years with the Clippers in November.

San Antonio Spurs rookie center Victor Wembanyama is destined for a long and prosperous NBA career filled with many fantastic performances. Early returns show that the 19-year-old looks like he'll be enjoying a fantastic NBA campaign, but there will be growing pains along the way, but

Unfortunately, Wednesday evening showcased some of those growing pains as Wembanyama had a night to forget when faced up against the league-best Minnesota Timberwolves, fellow Frenchman and three-time Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert for the second time on an NBA court.

Wembanyama finished with 12 points on just 4-of-13 shooting alongside 10 rebounds. Meanwhile, Gobert dominated the paint with 16 points on 7-of-8 shooting, 21 rebounds and an astronomical plus-31 rating.

San Antonio hung tough for a while and was even tied with Minnesota going into the fourth, but the Timberwolves pulled away for the 102-94 win.

Fans noted how Wembanyama struggled on Wednesday evening, especially against Gobert.

Of course, Wembanyama is are just 20 games into his career, and he just came off a month where he averaged 20.1 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.9 blocks per game. He's certainly capable of better performances, and we'll see them soon enough.

The 3-17 Spurs have now lost 15 straight games. They'll look to break their skid Friday when they host the Chicago Bulls.

Doing their best Detroit Pistons impression, the San Antonio Spurs have now lost 14-consecutive games.

And Friday night they did so without the help of rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama, who was ruled out with right hip tightness as the Spurs were blown out 121-106 against the New Orleans Pelicans at the Smoothie King Center.

Wembanyama's absence was immediately felt, particularly on the defensive end of the floor as San Antonio was punished inside by Pelicans' center Jonas Valančiūnas. The veteran big man scored a game-high 24 points to go along with 12 rebounds and two blocks.

The rookie's rim protection was certainly missed as well with the Pelicans racking up 52 points in the paint, compared to just 38 for the Spurs.

San Antonio has quietly been one of the worst teams in the league this season along with the Pistons and Washington Wizards but has been overshadowed by how terrible Detroit has been—becoming just the 13th team in NBA history to go winless for a month.

Nonetheless, Spurs' fans did not have a good time watching Friday night's performance.

With this being the second half of a back-to-back the Spurs will be hoping to have Wembanyama back for a Dec. 6 matchup against the Minnesota Timberwolves and stop the skid.

San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama will miss Friday's game against the New Orleans Pelicans due to right hip tightness.

This is the second half of a back-to-back for the Spurs, whose losing streak stretched to 13 games with Thursday's 137-135 loss to the Atlanta Hawks. They have the NBA's second-worst record at 3-15.

The No. 1 overall pick is living up to the hype so far by averaging 19.3 points, 9.7 rebounds and an NBA-leading 2.7 blocks. He's fresh off recording a double-double (21 points and 12 rebounds) in 29 minutes against Atlanta.

This will be the first game Wembanyama has missed.

Many wondered what the 19-year-old's workload would look like in his first season. Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich pioneered load management, so it stood to reason he'd be cautious with the new franchise cornerstone.

Not to mention, the odds of Wembanyama holding up through the rigors of a full 82-game season were slim between his age and 7'4", 210-pound frame. If anything, it's somewhat surprising he made it this long without either picking up a slight knock or getting rested proactively.

After Friday, the Spurs have a few days off before they're next back in action. They head to Minneapolis to play the Minnesota Timberwolves on Dec. 6. That layoff will presumably allow for Wembanyama to return to the lineup ahead of that clash.

Spurs' Wembanyama on Expectations: 'This Is Probably the Worst Victor We'll Ever See'

San Antonio Spurs rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama is in the midst of a solid first year in the NBA, but he hasn't necessarily lived up to the lofty expectations he faced when he was drafted with the No. 1 overall pick.

Still, Wembanyama is fully confident that he'll only get better with time, as he declared to reporters on Tuesday, "This is probably the worst Victor we'll ever see."

Wembanyama is averaging team highs of 19.2 points, 9.5 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 2.6 blocks per game while also adding 2.6 assists.

However, the 7'4" big man's efficiency has left much to be desired, as he's shooting just 43.0 percent from the field and 27.5 percent from three-point range through 17 games this season.

Wembanyama was projected as a generational talent and the most promising prospect to enter the NBA since LeBron James in 2003. While it appears that it will take some time for him to fully acclimate to the NBA, he's shown flashes of brilliance that indicate he has a bright future in the league.

Wembanyama and the Spurs (3-14) will be trying to stop a 12-game losing streak when they take on the Atlanta Hawks 8-8 on Thursday.

Nikola Jokić Hypes Victor Wembanyama: 'He's Gonna Change the Game, 100%

Sunday night was the first matchup in what could turn out to be a lengthy rivalry between Denver Nuggets' superstar Nikola Jokić and San Antonio Spurs rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama.

And despite Jokić and the Nuggets coming out on top, the two-time league MVP was still extremely impressed by the No. 1 overall pick and is excited about what his future will be like.

He's definitely buying into the generational hype surrounding Wembanyama.

"He is 19 years old. He is not getting scared of getting tired. He's playing hard," Nikola Jokic said via The Denver Post's Bennett Durando. "… He doesn't take it for granted. He's making mistakes, which is normal. I think the media around him doesn't help him, but he's gonna get used to it. He's gonna change the game, 100%. And he's already on that path."

A matchup against the defending champs was certainly a learning experience for Wembanyama as Jokić was cooking to the tune of 39 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists in a 132-120 victory.

Just showing off all the facets of his game that have made him one of the best players of this generation.

But the rookie wasn't far behind, putting on a show for a lowly Spurs squad.

Wembanyama dropped 22 points, to go along with 11 rebounds of his own, two assists, six steals and four blocks as he caused havoc everywhere on the defensive end of the floor.

It's that part of his game that Jokić enjoyed watching the most.

"The guy is guarding everybody on the floor. He can literally guard one through five," Jokic said. "And I think that's a good thing for him, just to learn every possible spot on the floor. Just experience-wise. I'm sure for him it's hard to chase guys around, just because he was probably playing center back in France."

It'll likely be a while until Wembanyama and the Spurs are competitive enough to contend for a title like Jokić and Co. But when that time does come, the NBA is gonna be in for something special as the era of dominant big men continues.

Gregg Popovich 'Felt Sorry' For Clippers' Kawhi Leonard When Spurs Fans Booed Him

San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich addressed his decision to speak on an arena microphone to fans who were booing Kawhi Leonard during Wednesday's game against the Los Angeles Clippers.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Popovich explained he "felt sorry for" Leonard getting booed by Spurs fans:.

"It's pretty easy to understand. I listened to it for a while and it just got louder and louder and uglier and uglier, and I felt sorry for him, and I was embarrassed for our city, for our organization. Because that's not who we are, that's not how we've conducted ourselves for the last 25 years. It's the opposite of the way we've conducted ourselves, the way we've worked in the community."

The incident occurred late in the second quarter when Leonard was at the free-throw line and jeers from the crowd directed at the five-time All-Star were getting louder.

Spurs fans can be forgiven if they have complicated feelings toward Leonard. His final season in San Antonio was very strange, to say the least.

Leonard played in nine games during the 2017-18 campaign due to a right quadriceps injury. The messaging around the injury and his potential return was muddled. He was medically cleared by team doctors late in the season, but continued to experience some pain and sought outside opinion from his own medical team before making any decisions.

A few weeks before the start of the playoffs, ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski reported the Spurs held a players-only meeting to implore Leonard to return for the postseason.

Wojnarowski described the meeting as "tense and emotional at times," with several teammates "expressing frustration and confusion over a growing divide that has created significant tension between Leonard and the Spurs."

Leonard ultimately didn't play again and reportedly requested a trade from the Spurs during the offseason. He wound up being dealt to the Toronto Raptors, who won an NBA title in his lone season with the club.

Before the end to his run in San Antonio, Leonard established himself as one of the best players in the league during his first six seasons with the Spurs. He made the All-Star team in 2015-16 and 2016-17, led the team to back-to-back NBA Finals appearances in 2013 and 2014.

Leonard was named MVP of the 2014 NBA Finals when he averaged 17.8 points on 61.2 percent shooting, 6.4 rebounds and 2.0 assists in the five-game series against the Miami Heat.

Wednesday marked Leonard's 14th career game against the Spurs. He scored 26 points in 36 minutes to lead the Clippers to a 109-102 victory.
