Penn State's James Franklin Says CFB Has 'Problems' Amid Beau Pribula Transfer

Dec 16, 2024

After Penn State backup quarterback Beau Pribula was forced to leave the team before the College Football Playoff following his decision to enter the NCAA transfer portal on Monday, head coach James Franklin voiced his displeasure with the system.

Per ESPN's Adam Rittenberg, Franklin said Monday, "We got problems in college football" and added that Pribula "should not be put in this position."

The open transfer portal overlaps with CFP preparation and games, forcing quarterbacks to make quick decisions on their transfer destinations. Pribula, who announced his intentions to transfer on social media on Sunday, cited the timing issues as part of the reason for his departure.

"The overlapping CFB playoff & transfer portal timeline has forced me into an impossible decision," he wrote.

Pribula's decision to transfer came after Penn State starting quarterback Drew Allar informed coaches that he would be returning for the 2025 season. Still, Franklin expressed disappointment in how the redshirt sophomore had no choice but to leave the team.

"I can give you my word Beau Pribula did not want to leave our program, and he did not want to leave our program until the end of the season," Franklin added. "But the way the portal is and the timing of it and the way our team is playing, and when you play the position of quarterback and there's only one spot and those spots are filling up, he felt like he was put in a no-win situation, and I agree with him."

Pribula was tied for second on the Nittany Lions with six rushing touchdowns and ranked third with 242 rushing yards while adding 275 passing yards with five touchdowns and an interception. He was the only other quarterback on the roster besides Allar to attempt a pass this season.

Allar will now be backed up by true freshman Ethan Grunkemeyer when No. 6 Penn State hosts No. 11 SMU in a CFP first-round game on Saturday.

Penn State QB Drew Allar to Return for Senior Season Amid Pribula Transfer

Penn State quarterback Drew Allar informed the team that he plans to return for his senior season in 2025.

ESPN's Pete Thamel first reported the news.

Allar has spent all three years of his college career with the Nittany Lions, helping them reach the College Football Playoff with a record of 11-2 this season.

His return gives Penn State some stability at quarterback moving forward, especially after sophomore signal-caller Beau Pribula announced his decision to enter the transfer portal on Sunday.

Allar confirmed his decision to remain in Happy Valley in a statement posted on X.

"I know there's still more work to do which is why I look forward to making more memories with my teammates this year and beyond," Allar wrote.

Pribula may have been aware of the incumbent starter's intention to return next season, which could have played a role in his decision to transfer.

Allar joined Penn State as a 5-star recruit and became a full-time starter in 2023, putting together an impressive year. That season, he completed 59.9 percent of his throws for 2,631 yards and a conference-leading 25 touchdowns compared to a mere two interceptions.

While he's been picked off seven times in 13 starts during his 2024 campaign, he's showcased improved accuracy while averaging 12.9 yards per completion. Allar has also connected on 69.1 percent of his passes for 2,894 yards.

He's continued to make progress down the stretch of the season, throwing for 1,108 yards and nine touchdowns to go along with two interceptions over his previous five appearances.

With his future on the Nittany Lions secured, Allar will now turn his attention towards a CFP matchup with SMU. The Mustangs weren't able to earn an ACC title, but they're still in the playoff with an impressive 11-2 record of their own.

Allar will attempt to remain effective against the ACC's No. 1 scoring defense in the upcoming matchup between the two teams on Saturday at 12 p.m. ET.

Penn State QB Beau Pribula Enters Transfer Portal, Leaves Team Ahead of CFB Playoff

Penn State quarterback Beau Pribula is entering the transfer portal ahead of the Nittany Lions College Football Playoff game against SMU.

In a statement announcing his decision on social media, Pribula noted that the timing of the transfer portal window meant he had a difficult decision to make.

"The current NCAA post-season model creates a challenge for student athletes," he wrote. "The overlapping CFB playoff & transfer portal timeline has forced me into an impossible decision. After speaking at length with my family and coaches, it is with a heavy heart that I announce my intentions to enter the transfer portal and depart from the team to explore opportunities elsewhere."

Though Pribula was not Penn State's starting quarterback this season, the Nittany Lions used him often in specific packages that they'll now have to move away from with him entering the transfer portal.

Pribula, a sophomore, appeared in all 13 games this year, throwing for 275 passing yards, five touchdowns and an interception on 26-of-35 passing. He also had 38 carries for 242 yards and four touchdowns.

He saw the most action against Wisconsin when starting quarterback Drew Allar sustained an injury in the second half. In that contest, Pribula completed 11 of his 13 pass attempts for 98 yards and a touchdown along with 28 yards on the ground.

Last year, Pribula had 149 passing yards and four touchdowns, also picking up 329 rushing yards with six touchdowns on the ground.

Pribula, a native of York, Pennsylvania, was considered to be a 3-star prospect coming out of high school by 247Sports Composite, picking the Nittany Lions over Nebraska, Northwestern and a handful of other programs.

He's proved to be a reliable option during his time with Penn State and is now looking to get his chance to start elsewhere. Unfortunately for the Nittany Lions, that means they will be without him in the CFP.

Should Penn State defeat SMU, it will move on to a matchup with No. 3 Boise State. Though the Nittany Lions didn't earn a first-round bye, it has a relatively manageable path to the College Football Playoff semifinal, where it would take on either Georgia, Notre Dame or Indiana.

Penn State Police Close Investigation of Jason Kelce Phone-Smashing Incident

Penn State University Police and Public Safety is no longer investigating the incident that saw former NFL star Jason Kelce smash a phone when he was on campus for a Nov. 2 football game between the Nittany Lions and Ohio State.

"The individual in the video footage circulating on social media has not been identified, and no one has come forward to University Police with a related complaint about damage to personal property," a spokesperson said Tuesday in a statement, per Jenna West of The Athletic.

West noted the Penn State University Police and Public Safety daily crime log said the department initially opened an investigation when an officer "observed a visitor damaging personal property."

Video captured someone using an anti-gay slur when discussing the relationship between Jason's brother, Travis, and music superstar Taylor Swift. Kelce then responded by repeating the slur and smashing a phone (Videos contain offensive language).

The former Philadelphia Eagles center and current ESPN commentator then publicly addressed the situation and said he was "not proud" of his response.

"I think everybody's seen on social media everything that took place this week," Kelce said during ESPN's Monday Night Countdown on Nov. 4. "Listen, I'm not happy with anything that took place. I'm not proud of it. In a heated moment, I chose to greet hate with hate. I just don't think that's a productive thing. I really don't. I don't think it leads to discourse and is the right way to go about things.

"At that moment, I fell down to a level that I shouldn't have. The bottom line is, I try to live my life by the golden rule, that's what I've always been taught. I try to treat people with common decency and respect, and I'm going to keep doing that moving forward. Even though I fell short this week. I'm going to do that moving forward and continue to do that."

Kelce was in attendance at the game because he was included in a segment for ESPN's on-location pregame College GameDay show.

Penn State's James Franklin Eyes Equal Conference Schedules After CFP Bracket Reveal

After the College Football Playoff field was decided on Sunday, Penn State head coach James Franklin offered a suggestion to make things more equal across different conferences.

"Everyone should be playing the same number of conference games," Franklin said, per StateCollege.com's Seth Engle.

Franklin's Nittany Lions were named the No. 6 seed in the first 12-team CFP bracket on Sunday. Penn State's only losses came to Ohio State and Oregon, which it fell to in the Big Ten Championship Saturday.

The Big Ten announced last fall that it would continue to play nine conference games every year until at least the 2029 season. The Big 12 revealed ahead of the 2024 season that it would continue playing nine league games as well.

The other two Power 4 conferences, the SEC and ACC, each play eight conference games despite the SEC expanding to 16 teams this year and the ACC moving to 18 teams.

It's unclear whether Franklin thinks the best decision is for the Big Ten and Big 12 to move to eight games or for the SEC and ACC to move to nine games, but he's ready to even things out.

Franklin's frustration with the Nittany Lions' grueling schedule makes sense when you consider how the last few seasons have gone for him. Penn State has not lost a regular-season nonconference game since 2016, when it lost an early-season matchup against Pittsburgh.

The Nittany Lions never made the College Football Playoff under the four-team format, though that could have been different if they hadn't had to play an additional Big Ten matchup.

Franklin and Penn State have more to worry about than their conference schedule right now as they prepare for a matchup against No. 11-seeded SMU. After losing to Clemson in the ACC Championship, the Mustangs made it into the Playoff over Alabama and are now looking for a big upset over the Nittany Lions.

Penn State will get the benefit of hosting inside what should be a rowdy Beaver Stadium on Dec. 21. A win would get the Nittany Lions a date with No. 3-seeded Boise State in the quarterfinals.

Mike Locksley Calls Out James Franklin, PSU for 'Bulls--t' Late TD in Maryland Loss

Maryland head coach Mike Locksley and Penn State head coach James Franklin did not see eye-to-eye following the Nittany Lions 44-7 victory over the Terrapins on Saturday.

Locksley and Franklin had a heated exchange in the postgame hand shake and Locksley elaborated on the situation following the game, saying that he was frustrated with Penn State scoring a late touchdown in the blowout victory.

"Bullsh--t. That's what it was," Locksley said, per Max Ralph of PennLive. "I respect the game. I've got a lot of respect for James, his program. I think it was bulls--t."

In response, Franklin explained that the third-and-fourth string players were just showing their abilities and that he is "good with it" that they play to score.

"My jobs is to put threes and fours in the game, but when the threes and fours get to go in the game, they get to play football," Franklin told reporters. "Those guys deserve to play football."

The Terrapins led 7-3 after the first quarter but it was all Penn State from that point on. The Nittany Lions scored 28 points in the second quarter and 13 more in the final quarter to seal the victory and earn a trip to the Big 10 Championship.

The controversy arose due to Penn State scoring its final touchdown as time expired. Quarterback Beau Pribula connected with Tyseer Denmark for a 15-yard touchdown. It was Denmark's second career catch and the freshman at least flashed some potential for the future.

Locksley clearly didn't see it that way and his frustration may also be indicative of Maryland's rough 4-8 season. Franklin and the Nittany Lions will now prepare for a matchup against Oregon for a shot at the No. 1 overall seed in the College Football Playoff.

Penn State will be playing Oregon for the Big Ten title.

The Nittany Lions cruised to a 44-7 win over visiting Maryland on Saturday night to secure a spot in the conference championship game.

Whichever team wins next Saturday in Indianapolis will receive a spot in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals.

The win marks the first time since 2016 that Penn State has qualified for the Big Ten championship game and the second time under head coach James Franklin.

After fumbling on the first play of the game and allowing Maryland to take an early lead, Penn State rebounded with touchdowns on four consecutive drives in the first half.

Quarterback Drew Allar recorded two total touchdowns while running back Nicholas Singleton ran in two more, as the Nittany Lions' dominant run game helped the home team recover the lead.

Heading into Saturday, it hadn't seemed like that would be enough to earn Penn State a spot in the Big Ten Title game.

That all changed when Michigan upset Ohio State earlier in the day.

The Wolverines defeated the host Buckeyes 13-10 to mark a fourth straight rivalry win while ruining Ohio State's opportunity to clinch the right to play Oregon.

Penn State head coach James Franklin said before the game that his team would be "very, very excited" to take on Oregon for the conference title.

"For us, we want an opportunity to compete as many times as we possibly can this year," Franklin said earlier this week, per On3's Dan Morrison. "If that includes a conference championship game, we would be very, very excited about that opportunity."

There's also the possibility that Penn State could defeat Oregon and enter the playoff with a chance at the No. 1 overall seed.

Ohio State would have needed both Penn State and Indiana to lose to preserve its path to the conference championship game. Indiana meanwhile needed a win and a Penn State loss to qualify for the showdown with Oregon.

The top four seeds in the final CFP rankings earn a first-round bye. Defeating Oregon will allow Penn State to clinch a spot in the quarterfinals of the inaugural 12-team playoff.

The Big Ten championship game will kick off at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on Saturday, Dec. 7.

James Franklin, No. 4 Penn State Avoid Upset vs. Minnesota, Underwhelm CFB Fans

Winning out against unranked teams in order to secure an at-large bid to the College Football Playoff didn't turn out to be as easy as Penn State head coach James Franklin might have hoped.

Penn State narrowly avoided a costly Big Ten loss as Drew Allar and the Nittany Lions claimed a 26-25 victory on the road Saturday night at Minnesota.

The loss had some fans wondering if Penn State, which entered the contest ranked No. 4 in the AP Top 25 poll and sixth in the latest College Football Playoff bracket, deserved a playoff bid at all.

Minnesota climbed out to an early 10-point lead thanks to a 20-yard touchdown run from Marcus Major and a fourth-down sack of Allar in the first quarter.

Allar got Penn State on the board by connecting with Omari Evans on a 45-yard touchdown, and the Nittany Lions looked set to shift the momentum of the game when Max Brosmer picked off Minnesota quarterback Dominic DeLuca.

Then the Gophers blocked a punt by Riley Thompson and took back the ball on Penn State's 21-yard line.

Minnesota scored a touchdown on the next play and headed into halftime leading by three points.

Penn State came back to win thanks to a Nicholas Singleton rushing touchdown, a Zakee Wheatley fumble recovery and a critical fake punt for a first down that kept the ball in the Nittany Lions possession late in the fourth quarter.

Allar then found tight end Tyler Warren on a fourth down with fewer than 30 seconds left to seal the win.

The final score was still closer than the Nittany Lions would have liked. A Big Ten loss would have impacted their ability to compete with other single conference-loss teams like Indiana (10-1 overall, 7-1 Big Ten) and Ohio State (10-1 overall, 7-1 Big Ten) in the CFP rankings.

Penn State can now continue fighting for home field advantage in the playoff by improving to 11-1 next weekend.

Penn State closes out the season with a home game against Maryland next Saturday afternoon.

Height: 6'5"

Weight: 255

HAND: 9½"

ARM: 31¾"

WINGSPAN: 76½"

POSITIVES

— Equipped with NFL height and weight to pass most team's physical thresholds.

— Possesses a strong burst/acceleration after the catch.

— Big catch radius and ball tracking to effectively high-point passes.

— An offensive weapon with outstanding alignment versatility.

NEGATIVES

— Run-blocking technique needs refining to improve the ability to sustain blocks.

— Easily pushed off the route path by physical contact.

— Lacks route-running nuance and details; has played full-time tight end for four years.

— Tall and leggy mover creates some transitional delays as a route runner.

NOTES

— 3-Star recruit in 2022 class, per 247Sports

OVERALL

Tyler Warren is a long, athletic tight end who makes plays from multiple alignments and presents a weapon to design creative plays around.

Ad Placeholder

Warren thrives against zone defenses. He is a former high school quarterback and understands the importance of finding soft spots within the defense. Warren settles into those soft spots as a big weapon for his quarterback to target. His burst post catch allows him to eat up grass quickly. He is a long strider who gallops more than sprints past defenders. As a run-after-catch threat, he plays with toughness and body control to fight through contact. Once the ball is in his hands, Warren's straight-line speed creates separation from pursuing defenders.

Ad Placeholder

Warren's alignment versatility showcases his football IQ to play multiple positions within the offense and creates pathways for potentially advantageous matchups. Warren can be fed the football in different ways; he is effective with manufactured quick touches and downfield targets. He tracks the football well while in flight and attacks it. He is a red zone threat because of his size, athleticism, ball skills, and catch radius.

Warren's area for growth is developing his route running and detailing. He has played tight end full-time for four years, leaving room for him to grow. Warren is a tall and long-legged mover, which causes slight delays at the breakpoint against tight man coverage. In the run game, his effort is there, but he lacks functional strength at the point of attack and good technique. His run-blocking needs improvement to ensure he reaches his ceiling as a complete tight-end prospect.

In all, Tyler Warren is a talented pass catcher who is handling the role as the top offensive option. He should be used as an H-back and flex tight end early in his NFL career until his inline run-blocking improves. Warren's receiving versatility and upside will add another element to an NFL offense and elevate their passing attack.

James Franklin bounced back from last week's loss by leading the Nittany Lions to victory on Saturday night.

No. 6 Penn State defeated visiting Washington 35-6, rebounding from a Week 10 loss to Ohio State and improving to 8-1 on the season.

The win took place in front of a crowd of more than 110,000 fans decked out for a Saturday night whiteout at Beaver Stadium.

Franklin received some boos from the Penn State crowd when he was introduced ahead of the game to fans who apparently hadn't forgiven the Nittany Lions for last week's 20-13 loss at home.

Penn State's outlook had improved by halftime, as the Nittany Lions surged out to a 28-0 lead through two quarters and demonstrated some lessons learned in the loss to Ohio State.

Penn State quarterback Drew Allar went 20-of-28 for 220 yards and a touchdown in the win.

Allar, who is in his third season with Penn State, entered the game throwing a career-best 70.1 pass completion rate through eight games.

Fans were impressed not just by Allar's numbers but by the quarterback's energy on the field as he led the Nittany Lions to the win.

Tight end Tyler Warren meanwhile set a program record with his 58th catch of the season, surpassing the 57 receptions Mike Gesicki recorded in 2017.

Warren finished out the game with five catches for 84 yards, and one lost fumble.

Penn State safety Jaylen Reed shone on defense as he picked off Washington starter Will Rodgers, forcing the Huskies to switch to Demond Williams Jr. under center.

Penn State dropped in the AP college football rankings after last week's loss to Ohio State, but the Nittany Lions could be hoping to regain a top-five spot after Saturday night's rebound performance.

Franklin and Penn State will hit the road again next weekend for a contest against Purdue on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET.
