Jeremy Hazell: Leader of the Seton Hall Pirates Is a Big East Talent

Dec 28, 2009

"Leadership boils down to two words.... Follow Hazell." —Jeremy Hazell

Cocky? Maybe.

Justifiable? Undoubtedly.

Without Jeremy Hazell, the Seton Hall Pirates would be an average team, incapable of competing with the powers of Big East basketball.

Not only does the 6'5" athletic shooting guard lead the Pirates in scoring, but he also motivates them with his desire to win.

Hazell, a native of Harlem, fits perfectly into Bobby Gonzalez's uptempo, high-pressure style. He is indefatigable—Seton Hall's depth is the reason he averages only 31 minutes per game—and thrives on fast breaks.

A scorer, Hazell can put points on the board in any imaginable manner. He can swish a 30-footer—ask Bob Huggins, who saw the Pirate hit two of those deep bombs on Saturday—or use his quickness to beat a defender off the dribble.

He's strong, and can finish in any amount of traffic. Whether he acrobatically hangs in the air or tosses a shot over his head, he almost always gets fouled and/or hits the shot.

On a team that boasts depth, Hazell is averaging 21.9 points per game. His 41 points against West Virginia this past Saturday set a career high, and the junior has scored at least 20 points in seven of Seton Hall's 11 games.

Hazell's one offensive weakness is his shot selection. Sometimes he gets carried away, as he did on Saturday, and launches an unreasonable number of shots from long range. He was 4-of-19 from deep on Saturday and 1-of-11 from behind the arc in a six-point loss to Temple.

Defensively, Hazell is as good as any Pirate in Gonzalez's full-court pressure. He can play suffocating defense and is averaging two steals per game.

Hazell is garnering more and more respect around the Big East; coaches named him to the conference's Third Team after last season and placed him on the Second Team this October.

While the Pirates have many weapons, Hazell is their leader. If they follow him, they should be dancing come March.

Temple Vs Seton Hall, Battle For Supremacy

Dec 14, 2009

Seton Hall is coming off a game where they score a school record 134 points. Temple is coming off a huge double-digit win over number 3 Villanova. Who wins?

Seton Hall is 8-0, but many doubt how good they really are. Temple has faced good teams and has only lost twice.

Seton Hall faces a tough challenge against Temple. Temple has a really good shooter in Juan Hernandez, that is coming off a game where he shot 7-9 from three, and scored 33 points. The Temple Owls are 8-2 and 4-1 on the road, that lost coming to number 20 Georgetown by one point.

Seton Hall is second in NCAA in scoring offense, scoring 90.8 points a game. They're also second in NCAA in rebounding total with 45.3 a game. Seton Hall has 4 players averaging more then 10+ per game.

Temple at Seton Hall should be a very interesting game. Temple is coming in with alot of confidence after knocking off the number number 3 team in NCAA basketball.

Key Match-ups

Temple Guards vs Jeremy Hazell

Jeremy Hazell is coming off a game where he has scored 33 points, and grabbed 12 rebounds. Jeremy Hazell is arguably the best player on Seton Hall's team. Hazell is a great 3 pt shooter, and he has no problem getting to the line.

Herb Pope vs Michael Eric/Lavoy Allen

Herb Pope is another dynamic player for Seton Hall. Herb is coming off a 15 point, 20 rebound game. Herb gets alot of offensive rebounds. Herb can definitely hurt teams in many ways, he plays defense and is always a factor inside.

Juan Fernandez vs Eugene Harvey

Juan Fernandez has proven that he can shoot the basketball. However in both losses Juan Fernandez made a combined 2 three point shot and shot poorly from the field.

Lavoy Allen vs Seton Hall's Big Men

Lavoy Allen is impressively good. Coming off a game where he snagged 17 rebounds and scored 10 points. You can define his dominance inside by his work ethnic. You'll won't catch him slacking off on a play. Lavoy Allen can get it done

Overall this game is going to be very entertaining. Temple nor Seton Hall can walk in this game coming away with a easy win. Temple has the early edge because of their .671 RPI rating.

Big East Conference: Players To Watch

Dec 14, 2009

The sixth installment of the "Players to Watch" segment features the Big East Conference.

Luke Harangody—Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Harangody has been a dominant player for three years with the Irish, and enters this season with even higher expectations. His numbers have steadily increased from year to year with his development, and he is putting on a show again this season, averaging a double-double.

Harangody is the reigning rebounding leader and scoring leader of the Big East conference, both impressive feats.  He has not scored less than 16 points so far this season and has not had less than seven rebounds in a game.

The Irish have not played many big games yet this season, and are coming off of a loss to Loyola-Marymount, but 'Gody did drop 29 points and gathered 15 rebounds in a win against Kennesaw.

Harangody's stats are a little inflated, though, as he took over 100 shots more than anyone in the Big East last season.  But he has a great field-goal percentage.

Notre Dame may struggle this season, but keep an eye on Harangody to lead this team to another solid season.

Deonta VaughnCincinnati Bearcats

Vaughn may not get the press that a player like Lance Stephenson gets, but don't let that fool you.  Vaughn is a key piece to the Bearcats success, and is practically their Shane Battier.

Vaughn fills up stat lines easily, averaging around 11 points, four assists, four rebounds, and 1.6 steals per game.  Last season, Vaughn finished seventh in the Big East for most assists and certainly was overlooked.

Cincinnati has had a fairly difficult schedule so far this season, but Vaughn's most impressive game came against Toledo, when he had 13 points, four rebounds, nine assists, and four steals.  Against tougher opponents, such as Xavier and Maryland, Vaughn has been solid too.

One thing to note about Vaughn is his durability.  He does not get himself in foul trouble and he certainly has stamina. He was sixth in minutes played in the Big East last season, playing almost 89 percent of all minutes.

Da'Sean Butler—West Virginia Mountaineers

Butler surged as the leader of West Virginia last season and, as a senior, improvement is only expected.  He is a great scorer, but also adds rebounds and assists to his plethora of abilities.

When Butler plays well, West Virginia wins, and usually wins big.  In the two games where Butler has scored 20 or more points, West Virginia has won by 22 or more.  He is clearly the leader of this team and his best game came against Loyola Maryland.  He scored 26 points, collected seven rebounds, and had five assists in a huge win.

Butler is the senior leader of this Mountaineer squad, and if they hope to compete this season, it will be behind the play of Butler as well as Devin Ebanks.  Just to show how dominant Butler is, he finished in the top 10 in scoring last season in the very competitive Big East.

Jeremy Hazell—Seton Hall Pirates

Hazell became a household name last season as a sophomore when he surprised many in the Big East by averaging over 20 points per game. He finished second in scoring, behind only Harangody.

After a disappointing start against St. Peter's, scoring only two points, Hazell has been lights-out ever since, scoring no less than 15 points in each game.  He has had two 30-plus-point games, and has led the Pirates to an 8-0 start.

Seton Hall has not faced anyone particularly challenging as of yet, but in a shootout with VMI, Hazell accounted for 33 points, 12 rebounds, five assists, and four steals.  He is the Pirates' leader this season, and after the strong start to the season, Hazell has many wondering if Seton Hall can make a return to March Madness. They have not made the NCAA Tournament since the 2005 season.

Just a sidenote on what makes Hazell even more impressive: he is among top 10 in the Big East in steals, showing how greatly he contributes on both sides of the ball.

Are The Seton Hall Pirates Really as Good as Their Record?

Dec 13, 2009

Seton Hall starts of the season with a perfect 8-0 record. But are they as good as their record says? Seton Hall hasn't started off perfect since the 88-89 season which they went all the way to the National Championship game before losing a heart-breaker to Michigan.

Seton Hall has a weak non-conference schedule to start the season. Playing games against weaker opponents. Seton Halls toughest challenges have came on the road to Monmouth, Cornell and a struggle at home against St.Peter's.

At this point you can't really judge Seton Hall based on their record.

However, later on in the season you will be able to tell just how good the Pirates really are. The Pirates have seven Top 25 opponents left on their schedule and look to prove doubters wrong.

Seton Hall has a strong experienced team returning 8 players from last years team that was two games above 500. In addition Bobby Gonzalez acquired Ferrakohn Hall a high energy freshman from Memphis that knows the game of basketball.

Seton Hall's leading scorer is Jeremy Hazell. Jeremy Hazell is no doubt the key to Seton Hall's success. Jeremy has two 30 + games and six 20 + games this season through the first eight games. Also you have Herb Pope who leads the Pirates in rebounds with 12.8 a game.

So far Seton Hall has been nothing but impressive. Breaking a school record with 134 points in their last game against Virginia Military. Seton Hall is predicted to make the NCAA tournament this year. With the improvement of their team I believe they will make it there and become one of the top four in the league.

65 Teams in 65 Days: #38 Seton Hall

Sep 7, 2009

Location: South Orange, NJ
Nickname: Pirates
Conference: Big East
Last Year’s Record: 17-15

Seton Hall Guard Jeremy Hazell

Seton Hall Guard Jeremy Hazell

Why they’ll make it: There may not be a more underrated player in the country than Jeremy Hazell. The Harlem product put up huge scoring numbers last season in the Big East. The junior guard scored over 30 points on six occasions last season on his way to finishing second in the conference in scoring. Led by Hazell, the Pirates showed flashes of what they were capable of last season with wins over USC, Virginia Tech, and Georgetown. However an upgrade in talent with transfers Keon Lawrence (Missouri) and Herb Pope (New Mexico State) along with highly touted freshman, Ferrakohn Hall should make Seton Hall more consistent. Coach Bobby Gonzalez is finally getting the talent to fit his system and has Seton Hall going in the right direction.

Why they won’t make it: This conference chews up inexperienced teams and spits them out. While the Pirates aren’t necessarily young, they’ll be incorporating a lot of talent in their attack that are newcomers to their system and the Big East. The conference ate Notre Dame and Georgetown alive last season. It is not expected to drop off too drastically in talent and can do the same to Seton Hall if it’s not prepared. Most of the guys on this team will be playing with expectations they haven’t had at this level. We’ll see if the Pirates become West Virginia and thrive under that pressure or succumb to it as Notre Dame and Georgetown did.

College Hoops Picks ATS, Mar. 11: Seton Hall Pirates at Syracuse Orange

Mar 11, 2009

Seton Hall Pirates(7-11, 17-14) at Syracuse Orange (11-7, 23-8)

Big East Tournament—Round 2
Wednesday, March 11—9:20 PM

Preview

The final game of the second round of the Big East Tournament features No. 11 Seton Hall at No. 6 Syracuse.

The Pirates took down South Florida 68-54 in the first round to advance to Wednesday's game. In the win, Jeremy Hazell was good for his average 23 points, and Eugene Harvey and Robert Mitchell scored 16 and 13 points, respectively.

Seton Hall has had ups and down this season, but along the way they have defeated some notable opponents. In just their third game of the season, the Pirates upset then-ranked USC, and they were part of the Hoya's terrible January when they upset them by five.

Syracuse has bounced around this season as well. They went into conference play 12-1, and then kicked off Big East play with four straight wins. But it all fell apart in their next ten games, when they went 3-7.

They have since corrected their ship and have won their last four games, including an 86-79 OT win at Marquette.

All five of the Orange starters are averaging double-digit points, and sophomore guard Jonny Flynn leads the pack with 17.1 PPG. They are currently ranked in the top 20, although they were in the top ten before their slide started in mid-January.

The only game between these two teams was the Big East opener for both teams, where Syracuse easily defeated Seton Hall, 100-76.

College Hoops Picks ATS, March 10: South Florida Bulls at Seton Hall Pirates

Mar 10, 2009

South Florida Bulls (4-14, 9-21) at Seton Hall Pirates (7-11, 16-14)

Big East Conference Tournament
Tuesday, Mar. 10—9:20 PM EST

Preview

The fourth and final game of the first day of the 2009 Big East Tournament features No. 14 South Florida at No. 11 Seton Hall.

The South Florida Bulls are looking for their tenth overall win of the season. They entered conference play as the only team with a losing overall record and have since had a couple of teams join them (namely the two teams beneath them in the standings).

Despite their record, the Bulls have three talented players—sophomore guard Dominique Jones and senior guard Jesus Verdejo in the backcourt, and freshman center Augustus Gilchrist in the frontcourt.

The Pirates three key players match up very well against the Bulls'—sophomore guard Jeremy Hazell and junior guard Eugene Harvey in the backcourt, and sophomore forward Robert Mitchell in the frontcourt.

Seton Hall has been more successful with this formula this season, though, as they have taken down more opponents, such as Georgetown and Cincinnati.

These two teams faced off once this season, and the Pirates took down the Bulls by 15.

Can the Bulls redeem themselves and get their tenth win of the season, or will Seton Hall move into the second round and be ready to face a tougher opponent?

Seton Hall at (6) Louisville: Bobby E's Breakdown

Mar 4, 2009

Date: Wednesday, Mar. 4

Time: 7:04 PM EST

Site: Freedom Hall (18,865) in Louisville, KY

Series History: UofL leads 7-4 (4-1 in L’ville, 3-3 @Seton Hall)

Last Meeting: UofL 82, Seton Hall 92 (Jan. 19, 2008 in Newark, NJ)

National Rankings: UL No. 6 AP, ESPN/USAToday (3/2)

Officials: Mike Kitts, John Gaffney, Pat Driscoll

With a win on Senior Night in Freedom Hall the Cardinals will head to Morgantown, West Virginia with a regular season BIG EAST Championship well within reach.

Of course, they will need some help early as UConn will need to fall at Pittsburgh first, but then the Cardinals will look to close out the Mountaineers and avoid both Pitt and UConn until the championship game.

Regardless, the Cardinals are now playing for seeding. I think it is fair to say they have a two seed locked up, but with either a regular season title, or a tournament title, it would be hard to avoid giving them a one seed.

First things first, on to the Pirates of Seton Hall.

cheerleader2

Louisville (23-5, 14-2 BIG EAST) has now won five strait and that is in large part thanks to their senior class, who will be recognized Wednesday night. Let me quickly mention Earl Clark and then move on, but be sure to enjoy seeing Earl on the court for the last time as well.

The fact that he will be included in Senior night festivities, I do not like. It’s called SENIOR NIGHT for a reason, you want your day in the sun, fulfill your commitment to the University and play your SENIOR year.

The 2008-2009 version of the Louisville Cardinals features three seniors: Will Scott, Andre McGee and Terrence Williams.

will_scott2Will Scott transferred in from Cornell following his freshman season and has seen his playing time diminish lately. He saw his first and only minute of action since the DePaul game against Marquette and has played in only 16 games this season.

He has scored 316 career points (115 at Cornell) and gone 74-24 so far in a Cardinal uniform. More importantly Scott learned earlier this season that he was one of only 15 students accepted into the Modern Chinese Studies graduate program at Oxford University in England.

Scott, though a basketball senior, has all but finished his master’s degree in business administration. For more on his Oxford acceptance check out this great article by the Courier-Journal’s Eric Crawford.

mcgeeAndre McGee is coming off a season-high 16 points in 28 energetic minutes against Marquette. Following an impressive strip at halfcourt, McGee raced towards the basket and threw down a rare two-handed jam for the 5'10″guard.

“I can jump pretty good, but I’m getting old,” McGee said with a laugh. “My legs are getting tired.” A co-captain throughout this season McGee works with fellow undersized guard Preston Knowles to create a 1-2 punch on defense that can be downright suffocating.

While never an offensive threat, McGee can knock down the three ball (35% for his career) and has games like on Sunday where he can light up the scoreboard. McGee has played 117 games as a Cardinal so far, averaging 5.1 points (614 total), 1.8 assists, 1.6 rebounds and nearly a steal (0.9) per contest.

Louisville Kentucky BasketballTerrence Williams will be missed on all accounts. His personality, his charisma, his thunderous dunks, and more recently, his sweet jumper. There isn’t much more than can be said about Williams college career at this point that hasn’t already been put out there.

I’d like to remind everyone again to head over to Lowe’s and vote for Twill in the Senior CLASS Award. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award honors the attributes of senior student athletes in four areas: classroom, community, character and competition.

The award program is designed exclusively for college seniors who are utilizing their complete athletic eligibility, remaining committed to their university and pursuing the many rewards that a senior season can bring. Williams had been one of 30 initial candidates. The winner will be announced during the NCAA Final Four.

Williams is 21st in career scoring at UofL with 1,452 points and needs 1 point to reach No. 20 Allen Murphy (1,453 pts., 1972-75).

He is fifth in career three-point goals with 175 and will move up to fourth with 5 more three-pointers (Francisco Garcia, 180)...Twill is fourth in career assists at UofL with 493 and needs five assists to move up to third (DeJuan Wheat, 498).

Terrence is sixth in career steals with 183 and needs 8 steals to move up to fifth (Reece Gaines, 191) and then one more for fourth (Lancaster Gordon, 192). Following the Marquette win Williams had this to say: “We want to go out as champions. I’m excited about the position we’re in. We’ve been through a lot of wars and there’s a lot more basketball to play.”

logo

Seton Hall (15-13, 6-10 BIG EAST) is coming off a 89-78 loss at the hands of Pittsburgh. Even before the Pittsburgh loss, coach Bobby Gonzalez was stumping for his squad’s inclusion in the postseason NIT.

Following the Pirates win at South Florida (although Seton Hall has six BIG EAST victories, all six have come against the bottom feeders of the conference, 12th thru 16th place) Gonzalez had this to say: “We still have some work to do… (But) We belong in the conversation.”

Georgetown is the only of the Pirates six BIG EAST wins against a team with a winning record. That win over the Hoyas was the start of a five game winning streak that propelled the Pirates into postseason contention. Since however they have lost four of five and finish with this game and at Cincinnati to end the regular season.

Sophomore guard Jeremy Hazell, who recently became Seton Hall’s 37th career 1,000 point scorer, is averaging a team-leading 22.7 points while shooting 36.1 % from downtown.

Junior forward Robert “Stix” Mitchell, a transfer from Duquesne who was the Atlantic-10 Rookie of the Year in 2006-'07 when UofL asst. coach Richard Pitino was with the Dukes, averages 14.3 points and a team-leading 8.2 rebounds. And junior guard Eugene Harvey puts up 12.2 points per game to go along with a team-high 4.8 assists per contest.

eugeneharveyVillanova Seton Hall BasketballSeton Hall Connecticut Basketball

Seton Hall’s loss to No. 1 Pittsburgh dropped the Pirates to 2-8 this season against teams ranked in the Associated Press Top-25. They defeated No. 19 USC on Nov. 20, lost to No. 12 Memphis, fell at No. 13 Syracuse, lost to No. 18 Villanova, lost to No. 13 Notre Dame, lost at No. 4 UConn, defeated No. 12 Georgetown on Jan. 25, lost to No. 1 UConn, lost to No. 10 Marquette and lost to No. 1 Pittsburgh. All-time, Seton Hall is 64-202 (.241) against teams ranked in the AP Top-25.

Seton Hall has done an excellent job of protecting the ball this season. To date, the Pirates rank third in the BIG EAST in turnover margin. They’re averaging only 12.1 per game while forcing 15.1 turnovers per game. Seton Hall is for the third straight year, towards the top of the BIG EAST Conference in steals per game average.

The Pirates are averaging 8.6 steals per game which is second-best in the conference. Seton Hall finished the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons as the BIG EAST steals leader.

bobbygonzalez

Bobby E’s Gamebreaker: POINTS IN THE PAINT!!!

It doesn’t take a basketball genius to see that the Pirates are a small basketball team. Seton Hall doesn’t have a lot of size and tends to have problems on the glass, and looks to mitigate those issues by shooting the ball well and scoring in transition.

Louisville needs to effectively press the Pirates and establish the inside game rather than try and match Seton Hall shot for shot.

Although the Cardinals should still be 10 points better than the Pirates if they take that route, if they let Hazell go off for 29 like he did last year, the Pirates could cost Louisville the BIG EAST Championship for the second year in a row.

Whatever style of play the Cardinals go with they seem to emerge victorious. “We can play fast and we can play slow,” coach Rick Pitino said. “If we’re in a fight with Pittsburgh or Marquette, we can hold our own. If we’re in a running game, we can hold our own.”

The game will be televised on the BIG EAST Network (WHAS-TV locally) with Bob Picozzi (play-by-play) and Mark Adams (color) calling the action. You can also hear the game broadcast on WHAS (840 AM) by Paul Rogers (play-by-play) and Bob Valvano (color) or on SIRIUS satellite ch. 127.

The Panthers are the top team in the nation for the second time this season, and for the second time they are going to fall. On Thursday, they were upset by Providence 81-73. This loss snapped a seven-game win streak.

The Pirates have been a little less successful this season, but they did manage to snap their three-game losing streak with a 15 point victory over South Florida.

All five of the Pirates previous wins had come before their three-game losing streak, when they managed to win five in a row. Unfortunately for Seton Hall, those wins did not come over the best opponents the Big East has to offer.

Pitt is going to be looking to make a big statement. The timing of the Providence loss could wind up helping them a lot more than hurting them—this can give them the extra boost to fuel them through the end of the regular season, the Big East Tournament, and March Madness.

College Hoops Picks ATS, Feb. 25: South Florida Bulls at Seton Hall Pirates

Feb 24, 2009

South Florida Bulls (3-11, 8-18) at Seton Hall Pirates (5-9, 14-12)

Wednesday, Feb. 24—7:00 PM EST on The Big East Local Network

Preview

Seton Hall is looking to snap their three-game losing streak on Wednesday when they host South Florida for their only scheduled meeting this season.

Despite their recent slide, the Pirates still sit in eleventh in the Big East. While their chances of making it to the next bracket up for the Big East tournament seem slim at this point, they want to at least stay in the top half of the ninth through sixteenth seeds.

The Bulls struggles have been displayed throughout much of the season—they entered conference play as the only Big East team with a losing record, and they currently sit in 14th with two wins over Big East winless DePaul, and one chance win over Marquette.

South Florida doesn't look like they are going to be able to stop the Pirates's hopes of staying in the upper part of those first day tournament games, but both teams are well aware that upsets can happen.
