Playoff hockey was at its best on Tuesday evening in Madison Square Garden.

A thrilling and exhausting matchup ended in the New York Rangers' favor after Vincent Trocheck's double overtime power play goal gave his team a 4-3 lead over the visiting Carolina Hurricanes and a 2-0 edge in their Eastern Conference second-round series.

Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin made 54 saves, including 32 during the third period and overtimes combined. He has now allowed three or fewer goals in all 29 of his lifetime playoff games.

Blueshirts right wing Alexis Lafrenière scored two goals and teammate Chris Kreider added a third period score to knot the game at three and help propel the Rangers to a perfect 6-0 postseason start.

Carolina lost despite outshooting New York 57-39 and holding 2-1 and 3-2 leads. Hurricanes left wing Jake Guentzel scored twice, and Sebastian Aho assisted on all three Carolina scores, including Dmitry Orlov's first period effort.

In the end, Trocheck was the hero after a sensational game. He's also been the hero all playoffs with five goals (one in each of the last five games) and five assists.

The 30-year-old also drew the crucial cross-checking call against Brady Skjei, leading to the power play and eventual game-winner.

Fans and analysts applauded Trocheck's efforts and game-winning score against his ex-team:

Game 3 of the best-of-seven series will take place on Thursday in Raleigh, North Carolina's PNC Arena at 7 p.m. ET.

The New York Rangers held off the Carolina Hurricanes to secure a 4-3 victory in the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

In front of a raucous Madison Square Garden crowd, the Rangers took a 1-0 lead in the second-round series between the two teams.

Both New York and Carolina got off to hot starts, as Mika Zibanejad scored off a smooth feed from Jack Roslovic less than three minutes into the first period. The excitement was short-lived, as Hurricanes defenseman Jaccob Slavin tied the game up just over a minute later.

The Rangers continued to execute in power-play situations, as Zibanejad secured his second goal of the evening after Canes defenseman Tony DeAngelo picked up a roughing penalty. The Presidents' Trophy winners weren't done just yet, as Vincent Trocheck scored another power-play goal before the end of the period.

After a scoreless second period, both teams traded goals to start the third before Seth Jarvis scored to pull Carolina to within one goal. However, New York was able to maintain the team's 4-3 lead over the final minute and 45 seconds of play.

Fans were impressed with the Rangers as well as the continued strong play of Zibanejad, who racked up two goals and an assist on Sunday after leading the team in points during the first round.

The 31-year-old recorded his 16th multi-point game in the playoffs for the Rangers, putting him in a tie with Rod Gilbert for the third-highest mark in franchise history.

The Rangers will now attempt to jump out to a 2-0 series lead, hosting the Hurricanes in Game 2 on Tuesday.

Artemi Panarin, Rangers Championed By NHL Fans for Sweeping Alex Ovechkin, Capitals

The New York Rangers are the first team to advance in the 2024 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

After taking the first three games of the series against the Washington Capitals, New York finished the job Sunday with a 4-2 victory.

It was the first series sweep for the Rangers since 2007, when they swept the Atlanta Thrashers in the first round.

The Presidents' Trophy winners did not take long to get on the board, as Kaapo Kakko scored within the first minute.

Washington would tie it at one, but Vincent Trocheck would reestablish the lead before the first period ended.

Hendrix Lapierre scored for the Caps in the second, and the teams entered the final period knotted at two. However, Panarin would score within the first five minutes of the third to put New York in the lead for a third time.

Washington could not find the equalizer, and an empty-net goal from Jack Roslovic ensured New York's trip to the second round.

Igor Shesterkin had 22 saves, and Panarin's four shots led the team.

Fans took to social media to congratulate Panarin and the Rangers for clinching a berth in the next round:

The Rangers advance out of the first round for the first time since 2022. They will face either the Carolina Hurricanes or the New York Islanders in Round 2.

A battle for New York supremacy could be interesting, as it has not happened since 1994. However, it could be a tough ask considering that the Islanders are trailing the Hurricanes 3-1.

If Carolina advances, New York could ride the extra rest and the fact that it won the season series 2-1.

Alex Ovechkin Ripped by NHL Fans as Rangers Beat Capitals to Go Up 3-0 in Playoffs

The Washington Capitals are on the brink of elimination after going down 3-0 to the New York Rangers in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

The Capitals dropped Game 1 4-1 before making things a little more challenging in Game 2 but still losing 4-3. On Friday, the Rangers handled Washington 3-1.

Just five teams in NHL history have come back from a 3-0 deficit, so history certainly isn't in the Capitals' favor. Washington will need to be perfect from here on out, but it's hard to imagine it has what it takes to win four straight games.

After the loss, fans ripped veteran Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals for going down 3-0.

Ovechkin has been a nonfactor for the Capitals in this series. He has yet to record a goal or assists and has a -1 +/-. His sluggish play has made things much more difficult for Washington and has irked fans.

Ovechkin is already a legend, but if he can somehow will his team back from the 3-0 deficit, he would further establish that status and win back some fans after his early struggles.

The Capitals and Rangers will face off in an elimination game on Sunday at 8 p.m. ET.

The New York Rangers sure looked like the NHL's best team on Sunday.

Led by goals from Matt Rempe, Artemi Panarin and Jimmy Vesey—all within just over two minutes of each other in a frantic second period—the Rangers beat the Washington Capitals, 4-1, claiming Game 1 in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

Martin Fehervary scored the lone goal for Washington, just over a minute after Vesey capped the Rangers' goal bonanza.

Chris Kreider capped the scoring on a third-period breakaway, setting a Rangers' postseason record with his 41st goal, while Barclay Goodrow added two assists for New York.

Panarin's goal, meanwhile, ended a nine-game postseason scoring drought for him.

No team scored more points during the regular season than these Rangers (114), which included a regular-season split with the Capitals. And Sunday's very convincing performances had fans and pundits alike feeling that a big postseason might be on tap:

https://twitter.com/Lighty99/status/1782168886252585338
https://twitter.com/MD10Chris/status/1782167292467433888

The Rangers defense was superb, holding the Capitals to just 21 shots, with Igor Shesterkin deftly handling 20 of them. This was a complete performance.

And the Big Apple is so hype for these Rangers, even the New York Yankees were showing them the love on Sunday:

It's a special time in New York. The Rangers, Islanders and Knicks are in the postseason. The Yankees have started 15-7 behind the star power of Juan Soto, and the Mets are 12-8. The NFL draft is upcoming for the Jets and Giants, where hope springs eternal.

But no team in the city looks better than these Rangers. One down, 15 to go.

New York Rangers goaltender Jonathan Quick has made U.S. hockey history.

Quick became the winningest American-born goaltender in NHL history on Saturday night while backstopping the New York Rangers to an 8-5 victory over the Arizona Coyotes at Mullett Arena.

The 38-year-old passed Ryan Miller for the record with his 392nd NHL victory.

"You do everything you can to not think about it, but it's there. It's a good feeling to get it done and over with," Quick said after the win, per ESPN. "Focus on what's really important, and trying to win the division here, and win the conference."

Quick, in his first season with the Rangers as a backup to Igor Shesterkin, spent the majority of his career with the Los Angeles Kings. He played for the franchise from 2007-2023, winning two Stanley Cups.

The Connecticut native was traded from the Kings last season, with the Columbus Blue Jackets ultimately sending him to the Vegas Golden Knights He won his third Stanley Cup as a member of the Golden Knights, though he didn't appear in a single playoff game for the franchise.

Quick is aiming to win his fourth championship this year as a member of the Rangers, which sit first in the Metropolitan Division with a 50-20-4 record. They have already locked up a playoff spot.

The New York Rangers are heading to the playoffs for the third consecutive season.

New York defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 6-5 in overtime in Tuesday's showdown but had already clinched their postseason spot before the game went final thanks to their overtime point and the Detroit Red Wings losing to the Washington Capitals in overtime.

Here is a look at where the Rangers sit in the current standings:

Eastern Conference

Atlantic Division

  1. Boston Bruins: 42-16-15, 99 points
  2. Florida Panthers: 46-21-5, 97 points
  3. Toronto Maple Leafs: 40-21-9, 89 points

Metropolitan Division

  1. New York Rangers: 48-20-4, 100 points
  2. Carolina Hurricanes: 45-21-7, 97 points
  3. Philadephia Flyers: 36-27-10, 82 points

Wild-Card Race

  1. Tampa Bay Lightning: 39-25-7, 85 points
  2. Washington Capitals: 36-26-9, 81 points
  3. Detroit Red Wings: 36-29-7, 79 points
  4. New York Islanders: 30-26-15, 75 points
  5. New Jersey Devils: 35-33-4, 74 points
  6. Buffalo Sabres: 34-33-5, 73 points
  7. Pittsburgh Penguins: 31-30-10, 72 points
  8. Ottawa Senators: 30-36-4, 64 points
  9. Montréal Canadiens: 26-32-12, 64 points
  10. Columbus Blue Jackets: 23-36-12, 58 points (eliminated from playoff contention)

Western Conference

Central Division

  1. Colorado Avalanche: 46-20-5, 97 points
  2. Dallas Stars: 44-19-9, 97 points
  3. Winnipeg Jets: 44-22-5, 93 points

Pacific Division

  1. Vancouver Canucks: 45-19-8, 98 points
  2. Edmonton Oilers: 42-23-4, 88 points
  3. Los Angeles Kings: 38-22-11, 87 points

Wild-Card Race

  1. Nashville Predators: 42-25-4, 88 points
  2. Vegas Golden Knights: 39-25-7, 85 points
  3. St. Louis Blues: 38-30-4, 80 points
  4. Minnesota Wild: 34-28-9, 77 points
  5. Calgary Flames: 33-32-5, 71 points
  6. Seattle Kraken: 28-29-13, 69 points
  7. Arizona Coyotes: 29-37-5, 63 points
  8. Anaheim Ducks: 24-43-4, 52 points (eliminated from playoff contention)
  9. Chicago Blackhawks: 20-46-5, 45 points (eliminated from playoff contention)
  10. San Jose Sharks: 16-46-8, 40 points (eliminated from playoff contention)

While New York is no stranger to making the postseason, it hasn't won a Stanley Cup title since the 1993-94 campaign. Last season ended in disappointment with a first-round loss to the New Jersey Devils, although it reached the 2022 Eastern Conference Final.

This season's team may have the starpower to advance further, as evidenced by Tuesday's win.

Artemi Panarin is a points machine who added two assists in the 6-5 victory, while Alexis Lafreniere scored two goals. Vincent Trocheck, Mika Zibanejad and Adam Fox each had a goal and assist as well.

Panarin, Trocheck, Chris Kreider, Fox and Zibanejad all entered play with more than 60 points on the season, and Panarin cracked the triple-digit total with his 101st point thanks to his two assists.

It will be difficult for any opponent to contain so many offensive options over the course of a seven-game series, and goaltender Igor Shesterkin is typically much better than he showed by allowing five goals against the Flyers.

The combination of Shesterkin and veteran Jonathan Quick gives New York quite the one-two punch in net and multiple options who could get hot come playoff time.

It is Stanley Cup or bust for the Rangers, who are sitting atop the Metropolitan Division. Madison Square Garden will surely be rocking throughout the playoffs, and more six-goal games like Tuesday's won't do anything to change that.

Rangers' Matt Rempe Suspended 4 Games by NHL for Elbow on Devils' Siegenthaler

New York Rangers rookie enforcer Matt Rempe is set to face his first suspension since being called up to the NHL.

After a hearing with the NHL's Department of Player Safety, Rempe was suspended for four games as a result of his hit on New Jersey Devils defenseman Jonas Siegenthaler Monday. He was assessed a major penalty for elbowing and given a game misconduct for the hit, which occurred during the second period.

The Department of Player Safety provided an explanation for the suspension, stating that Rempe's hit was not "accidental contact" and that Siegenthaler's movements "did not turn a legal check into an illegal one."

"Rempe chooses to flare his elbow both up and away from his body in dangerous action, driving it directly into the head of Siegenthaler with substantial force," The Department of Player Safety concluded.

The department took into consideration that the play was called a penalty, the play resulted in an injury and that Rempe had no prior suspension history in making its decision.

The incident occurred in Rempe's 10th career game, one which the Rangers won 3-1. Rempe has recorded one goal and one assist since being called up from the AHL Hartford Wolfpack, and has an average time-on-ice of 5:39.

Rempe's large frame at 6'7", 241 pounds, and physical play style was what caused the Rangers to call him up, and he has brought a toughness to the team after Blake Wheeler went down for the season with a lower-body injury.

Since getting the call-up, Rempe has scrapped with notable fighters like Matt Martin, Nicolas Deslauriers, Mathieu Olivier and Ryan Reaves. He also notably caused controversy for a hit on Devils forward Nathan Bastian, which resulted in a roughing and match penalty that ended his night.

He escaped suspension for that hit but was assessed one for the one on Siegenthaler, who exited the game with an upper-body injury.

Rempe will miss the Rangers games against the Carolina Hurricanes, Tampa Bay Lightning, Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Islanders. He will return for the Rangers game against the Winnipeg Jets on March 19.

New York is 42-18-4 and sits in first place in the Metropolitan Division.

Rangers' Measured NHL Trade Deadline is Nothing to Panic About

Adam Herman
Mar 9, 2024
Rangers general manager Chris Drury.
Rangers general manager Chris Drury.

The New York Rangers entered the final days approaching Friday's NHL Trade Deadline with a clear need for a first-line winger.

Among possible available players? Jake Guentzel, Jordan Eberle, and Tyler Toffoli. Failing those options, Frank Vatrano, Pavel Buchnevich, Jason Zucker, or Reilly Smith might be available.

The Rangers ended up with none of them, instead settling for Jack Roslovic, a second-to-third-line tweener who edges a lot closer to the third line. Roslovic has averaged 45 points per 82 games over his last five NHL seasons and has just six goals this season. That's a good depth player to have, but the Rangers weren't seeking someone to slot on the third line. They were after a difference-maker.

Jack Roslovic.
Jack Roslovic.

That isn't the big addition that would reaffirm the Rangers' place as a Cup contender who means business. Fan reaction has not swayed towards optimism.

Though the list of theoretical targets was healthy, several differing issues complicated the process. Eberle chose to re-sign in Seattle, while the Devils were never going to trade Toffoli to their hated rival. The Coyotes took a minuscule return to avoid retaining salary on Zucker's $5.3 million cap hit, which the Rangers would have needed to be halved. The Blues were more than happy to keep Buchnevich.

Sometimes the market just doesn't sway in your direction.

One could argue that the Rangers should have pushed all their chips in to beat the Carolina Hurricanes' offer for Jake Guentzel. That would have possibly involved moving a first-round pick and one of Kaapo Kakko, Gabe Perreault, or Brennan Othmann. Maybe more.

There was also the possibility of bringing back Frank Vatrano. That, too, would have required the departure of major assets. The Ducks were not allowed to retain salary on Vatrano in a trade and much of his production during a career year has come on the power play. The Rangers needed an even-strength needle-mover.

Rangers fans have been primed for the expectation of big additions at this time of year. That has been in their DNA across many eras. Two seasons ago, they dropped first- and second-round picks along with prospect Morgan Barron to rent Andrew Copp. Last year, they traded two major packages of draft picks for Vladimir Tarasenko and Patrick Kane.

Patrick Kane and Vladimir Tarasenko.
Patrick Kane and Vladimir Tarasenko.

The reality is that a team can only do that so many times. The Tampa Bay Lightning, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Boston Bruins, also big spenders at the deadline in previous seasons, settled for more mundane additions this time around. Teams do not have infinite resources and every season in which you pool together trade chips means a future moment in which that will not be feasible.

This is not to completely let the Rangers' front office off the hook. Barclay Goodrow's contract ($3.64 million through 2027) is practically unmovable and has limited the team's financial flexibility. The team made a mistake trading Buchnevich three years ago and arguably made more mistakes paying heavy costs for temporary patch jobs at previous deadlines. Copp, Kane, and Tarasenko were gone almost as soon as they arrived, leaving the Rangers with the same problem to start the next season.

Maybe that's the point. The Rangers were staring down a third-straight season of overpaying for temporary fixes. The elimination of those assets makes finding a permanent fix the following summer more difficult, leading to the same cycle the next season.

The Rangers indeed have serious Stanley Cup ambitions. Their window to win is now. But the sun is not setting on their core. Artemi Panarin (32), Chris Kreider (32), Mika Zibanejad (30), and Vincent Trocheck (30) won't be top players forever, but should have at least a few really good years left in their legs and all four are under contract for at least the next three seasons. Whether the Rangers flame out in the first round or bulldoze their way to a Stanley Cup championship, the ambition will be just the same next season. Likely the season after that as well.

Nor are the Rangers like the Penguins, who are facing a long, bleak rebuild once their older stars fade. Adam Fox (26), Igor Shesterkin (28), Alexis Lafreniére (22), and K'Andre Miller (24) should be part of the core for a really good team four or five years from now. So too might some of Kaapo Kakko (23), Filip Chytil (24), Will Cuylle (22), and Braden Schneider (22). Top prospect Perreault is almost a sure bet to be an impact NHLer in a few years and Brennan Othmann could be as well.

Rangers fans have internalized that a team's chances of winning are correlated to how aggressive they are at the deadline. Yet the Rangers have decades of history proving otherwise. This was not the Rangers giving up on their season. Remember that Vatrano, the one who many believe got away this year, was previously acquired with a fourth-round pick two years prior. He played a big role for a team that went on a deep run. The expensive Tarasenko and Kane's investments, meanwhile, led to splashy headlines and a humiliating first-round exit.

This team was good enough to be a top team this far into the season. That's despite some notable injuries and slumping star players. Alex Wennberg, Chad Ruhwedel and Roslovic help make the Rangers a complete team that is absolutely capable of winning the Stanley Cup.

Drury and the Rangers had the discipline to ensure the team would retain enough capital to ensure that can remain the case well beyond this season.

NHL Trade Rumors: Rangers' Frank Vatrano Talks with Ducks Were 'Too Rich' for NY

Mar 7, 2024

The New York Rangers are reportedly interested in forward Frank Vatrano ahead of Friday's trade deadline, but the Anaheim Ducks' asking price may be too much.

Emily Kaplan of ESPN reported "the Rangers initially balked" when the Ducks previously offered a trade package of Vatrano and Adam Henrique in exchange for a first-round draft pick and forward Kaapo Kakko.

"The Rangers clearly thought that was too rich for their liking," Kaplan wrote.

Anaheim can no longer include Henrique in any trade with the Rangers, as it moved him and Sam Carrick to the Edmonton Oilers in a three-team trade that also involved the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Rangers were busy themselves Wednesday and announced they landed forward Alex Wennberg from the Seattle Kraken in exchange for a 2024 second-round draft pick and 2025 conditional fourth-round draft pick.

Yet New York is still in the market for more offensive firepower as it looks to replace Filip Chytil and Blake Wheeler, who are both out for the season.

Kaplan noted general manager Chris Drury is "very hesitant" about including Kakko in a trade, which could be a factor in any additional Vatrano talks since the Ducks reportedly already asked for him in a previous offer.

Vatrano is in the middle of a career-best season production-wise with 49 points on 29 goals and 20 assists. Those are all career-high numbers and would help New York add more of the needed forward depth ahead of the stretch run.

There is also a familiarity in place, as the veteran played for the Rangers during the 2021-22 season, appearing in 22 games.

For now, New York is six points ahead of the Carolina Hurricanes in the race for the Metropolitan Division crown. However, it has lost three of the last four games and could use more offensive firepower.

Perhaps that firepower will come in the form of Vatrano even if there is some hesitation to give the Ducks a significant return.
