Alex Caruso: 'Would Be Awesome' to Stay with Thunder, Land Contract Extension

Dec 21, 2024

As Alex Caruso enjoys his first season with the Oklahoma City Thunder, he is also keen to extend his stay with the club.

Speaking to NBA insider Jake Fischer, Caruso said it "would be awesome" to reach a long-term extension with the Thunder now that he is eligible to sign a new contract:

"Obviously this is a place that I think is ascending and that's something I want to be a part of. That's why I'm here. I think the writing is on the wall. People don't trade for guys in the last year of their contracts unless they expect to keep 'em for a while.

"That's just the business part of it. So I'm looking forward to having that conversation with Sam [Presti]. Everything that the Thunder stand for are things that I stand for. I think their focus, their drives and desires, are the same as mine. It's been a good fit and I'm looking forward to hopefully a couple more years."

Oklahoma City made what seemed like one of the best moves of the entire offseason by acquiring Caruso from the Chicago Bulls for Josh Giddey in the rare one-for-one trade. Giddey was a useful player for three seasons with the Thunder, but last year's postseason showed some of the flaws in their rotation with him on the court.

There was some long-term risk for the Thunder because Caruso is in the final season of his contract with just a $9.9 million salary. Still, a team that is ready to win now after being the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference during the 2023-24 campaign could afford to take a chance.

Caruso made for a natural fit because of his defensive versatility and ability to make threes. His defense has carried over to the Thunder with a career-high 1.9 steals per game, but he's still looking to find consistency with his shot. The Texas A&M alum is shooting a career-low 38.5 percent from the field and 27.0 percent from three-point range.

Fischer noted Saturday marks the first day Caruso is eligible to sign an extension with the Thunder. It's unclear if he's going to be part of the team's plans beyond this season.

Caruso, who will turn 31 on Feb. 28, is the oldest player on Oklahoma City's roster. Kenrich Williams is the only other player on the team over the age of 26.

Another factor is the Thunder's core players are going to get very expensive very soon. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is eligible for a four-year, $294.3 million supermax extension after this season.

Jalen Williams and Chet Holmgren can sign extensions after the 2025-26 season. We've already seen the impact that the new apron rules have had on the way teams approach building their rosters.

Considering the Thunder previously broke up a big three as they were entering their prime and the ramifications that came afterward, it's hard to envision them doing the same thing again when Presti and the front office have so masterfully rebuilt this franchise into the best young core in the NBA.

Caruso's price tag will most likely be the deciding factor in whether or not he remains in Oklahoma City beyond this season. If he's happy with the organization and things keep going well on the court for the Thunder, the two sides might be able to find a deal that works for them.

SGA, Thunder Clinch NBA Cup Final Berth in Win vs. Rockets as Fans Hype Bucks Matchup

Dec 15, 2024

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder will play Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks for the NBA Cup title on Tuesday.

The Thunder earned a spot in the NBA Cup Final after defeating the Houston Rockets 111-96 in Saturday night's semifinal game.

A low-scoring first half saw the Thunder and Rockets combine for just 83 points through two quarters on Saturday night.

The Thunder began to pull away after Gilgeous-Alexander led the team on an 11-0 run in the third quarter.

After scoring 20 points in the second half, Gilgeous-Alexander finished out the victory with a team-high 32 points.

The effort marked Gilgeous-Alexander's fourth consecutive game with at least 30 points. He has now hit the 30-point threshold in 12 out of 25 games this season.

The Thunder shot 36.7 percent from deep, but emerged victorious by holding the Rockets to 23.9 percent shooting from behind the arc.

Gilgeous-Alexander led the Thunder's defense with five steals, while Luguentz Dort recorded three in the defensive showdown.

The Bucks earned their own spot in the final with an NBA Cup semifinal victory over the Atlanta Hawks earlier on Saturday. Milwaukee's star duo of Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard combined for 57 points in the win.

Milwaukee and Oklahoma City will now battle for the chance to join the Los Angeles Lakers as the NBA's in-season tournament winners.

The title game will not impact the teams' overall records or the players' season stats, but each winning competitor will receive more than $500,000 in prize money.

Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder will look to ride a five-game victory streak into the NBA Cup Final. Tip-off is scheduled for Tuesday at 8:30 p.m. ET.

SGA Hyped as MVP By Fans as Thunder Beat Luka, Mavs to Advance to NBA Cup Semifinals

Dec 11, 2024

The Oklahoma City Thunder have been dominant all season, so it's only fitting they advanced to the 2024 NBA Cup semifinals.

OKC defeated the Dallas Mavericks 118-104 in Tuesday's quarterfinals showdown at Paycom Center and improved to 19-5 in the process. The Mavericks had no answer for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who looked the part of potential league MVP with 39 points, eight rebounds, five assists and three steals.

Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder will face the winner of Wednesday's game between the Houston Rockets and Golden State Warriors in the semifinals in Las Vegas.

The battle between SGA and Luka Dončić was the game within the game, and the Mavericks star couldn't keep up from a scoring perspective with 16 points, 11 rebounds, five assists and four steals on 5-of-15 shooting from the field. Kyrie Irving added 17 points, while Klay Thompson finished with 19.

Dallas saw its seven-game losing streak come to an end in large part because of Gilgeous-Alexander's individual brilliance, and social media had some MVP love for the guard:

There was no shortage of stars in this game, and the brightest one on OKC's side wasted no time setting the tone. Gilgeous-Alexander poured in 16 points in the first quarter alone by mixing in outside shots and unstoppable drives into the lane.

To Dallas' credit, it weathered the early SGA storm and closed the deficit to just three by halftime with Naji Marshall providing a spark. It was much-needed production because Dončić struggled with his shot against the Thunder's physical team defense.

Still, the Mavericks needed more from Dončić if they were going to win on the road against one of the best teams in the NBA.

The five-time All-Star impacted the game in other ways with his rebounding, facilitating and even steals on the defensive end, but the lack of scoring from someone who entered play averaging 28.7 points a night was notable as the Thunder created separation in the third quarter.

It also stood out because Gilgeous-Alexander shifted into takeover mode again for stretches in the third quarter with a combination of drives and pull-ups. That drew additional defensive attention, and Isaiah Joe took full advantage with back-to-back triples all while Dončić entered the fourth quarter with two made field goals.

The second three from Joe came at the third-quarter buzzer after Alex Caruso hustled to keep the possession alive and gave the home team a commanding 17-point lead.

That advantage expanded to as many as 20, although Dallas played its way back into the game with a 10-run that featured back-to-back threes from Irving. Yet all it took was the Thunder putting Gilgeous-Alexander back into the game to seize control again, as his three put an end to the run and his steal set up Cason Wallace in transition.

As long as SGA was on the floor, there was no doubt about the outcome.

After his Dancing With the Stars exit on Tuesday, Dwight Howard is ready to move on to new endeavors.

The veteran big man is looking for another shot in the NBA, and he has a team in mind. On Kevin Garnett's podcast, All the Smoke, Howard made his pitch to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

"OKC, your boy is ready," he said. "What's happening? Y'all need a big. Y'all need somebody that's going to bring some energy. I ain't got nothing to do neither, I just got finished dancing. Me and (Alex Caruso) together, championship. I'm just saying, we did it before. Y'all already got a superstar, y'all just need somebody who know how to play defense. That's certified."

Oklahoma City is dealing with some early-season injury woes in the front court as Chet Holmgren, Isiah Hartenstein and Jaylin Williams are all currently sidelined.

Holmgren suffered a pelvic fracture earlier this week and won't get an update on his status for at least eight weeks. Hartenstein, who has a small, nondisplaced fracture in his left hand, is out for a few more weeks while Williams is working his way back from a hamstring strain.

The 38-year-old Howard has not played since the 2021-22 season when he put up 6.2 points and 5.9 rebounds off the bench for the Los Angeles Lakers. He spent one season in 2022-23 playing with the Taoyuan Leopards of the T1 League in Taiwan.

Howard, once an unstoppable force in his prime, likely wouldn't be a huge difference-maker for the Thunder, but as he said, he could bring some energy and experience to the young team.

The Oklahoma City Thunder are one of the hottest teams in the NBA at 9-2, and they gave fans another reason to be excited on Tuesday.

The Thunder unveiled their City Edition uniforms for the 2024-25 season and announced that they will wear them for the first time on Sunday when they face the Dallas Mavericks.

According to a press release, the design of the Thunder's City Edition uniforms "completes a two-year story arc reflecting Oklahoma City's evolving landscape, growth, and momentum."

"The 24-25 City Edition Uniform is an expression of Oklahoma City's progression and unique cultural renaissance stemming from the optimism inherent in Oklahoma's people and heritage," Brian Byrnes, Thunder senior vice president of Business Operations, said in the release. "It pays tribute to the innovators that have shaped Oklahoma's culture and are pushing it forward."

The Oklahoma lettering on the front of the jersey is meant to be a statement of unity, as it will mark just the second Thunder uniform in team history to feature the state's name at the center. The belt line also includes an outline of Oklahoma state.

In addition to the uniform, the Thunder will have a City Edition court for the City Nights games. Each Sunday home game will be dubbed City Nights games going forward after the team's matchup against Dallas this week.

The Thunder, who started the season 7-0, continued their strong start with a 134-128 win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday night. Star point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored a career-high 45 points to spearhead the victory.

Oklahoma City will be back in action on Wednesday in a home matchup against the New Orleans Pelicans (3-8).

Thunder's Chet Holmgren Out 8-10 Weeks with Pelvic Fracture Injury After Hard Fall

Nov 11, 2024

The Oklahoma City Thunder have announced center Chet Holmgren will miss eight to 10 weeks with a pelvic fracture after a hard fall attempting a block during Sunday's loss to the Golden State Warriors.

Everyone involved will certainly hope the young player avoids a longer-term issue after injuries have been a major storyline to this point in his career.

Holmgren was selected No. 2 overall in the 2022 NBA draft out of Gonzaga, but he was ruled out for the 2022-23 season after suffering a Lisfranc injury in his right foot during a Pro-Am event.

The 22-year-old has proved to be an impact player when on the court, averaging 18.2 points, 9.2 rebounds and 2.9 blocks entering Sunday's game against Golden State.

It has helped the Thunder emerge as one of the most exciting teams in the NBA with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams and a deep roster of versatile young players.

Unfortunately, the injury to Holmgren could hurt Oklahoma City's chances of competing with the best teams in the Western Conference.

Ousmane Dieng and Aaron Wiggins could be among those who see a bigger role if Holmgren misses an extended stretch.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Reflects on Clippers Trade: I'd Say It Worked Out in My Favor

Nov 3, 2024

Things are looking up for Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Oklahoma City Thunder, and the point guard seems pleased to be with his current team even if he doesn't hold anything against his former one.

"I had a great year here when I was here," he said after leading the Thunder to a road win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Saturday, per ESPN's Ramona Shelburne.

"Their front office made a trade that they thought was best for their team. Same with the Thunder. Then the last five years I've tried to focus on my development and the team's development. I've tried to be the best basketball player I can be for the Oklahoma City Thunder. And I'd say it worked out in my favor."

The Clippers traded Gilgeous-Alexander, Danilo Gallinari, five first-round picks and two pick swaps to the Clippers for Paul George in the summer of 2019. That was also the summer Los Angeles added Kawhi Leonard as it geared up for a run at the title that never materialized.

SGA was coming off a solid first season when he was named to the All-Rookie Second Team, but the Clippers may not have envisioned him becoming a legitimate MVP candidate and one of the best players in the entire league.

That is exactly what he is after finishing in the top-five in MVP voting in each of the last two seasons.

He could be well on his way to another such result in 2024-25, as the Thunder are 6-0 with him averaging 26.5 points, 6.7 rebounds, 6.5 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.2 blocks a night.

As for the Clippers, George is no longer on the team, Leonard is yet to play this season and their record is 2-4 in a daunting Western Conference. The trade was understandable in the moment for a franchise that saw the opportunity to add multiple proven stars in the same offseason and chase an elusive title in a city that is largely dominated by the Los Angeles Lakers.

But it seems to have worked out better for the Thunder in hindsight.

In a battle between two of the game's best big men and brightest young stars, the Oklahoma City Thunder's Chet Holmgren outdueled the San Antonio Spurs' Victor Wembanyama en route to leading his team to a 105-93 win.

Holmgren finished with 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting, five rebounds, two steals and two blocks in 28 minutes. Meanwhile, Wembanyama struggled through an off-night, scoring a career-low six points on 1-of-5 shooting while adding eight rebounds and three blocks.

These two are certainly bound to have a host of battles as their careers move forward, and the rivalry already has a little juice in its early stages.

But right now, Holmgren is 5-1 against Wemby lifetime, and the current edge goes to OKC.

The former Gonzaga star had his fair share of highlights on both ends, including two blocks on one possession.

This game was never seriously in doubt after halftime, with the Thunder winning by seven or more over the final two quarters.

Fans were undoubtedly impressed with Holmgren's efforts.

With the win, OKC moved to 4-0 on the season, one of two remaining undefeated teams left alongside the 5-0 Cleveland Cavaliers.

They'll now hit the road to play the Portland Trail Blazers next on Friday evening. Meanwhile, the 1-3 Spurs will visit the Utah Jazz on Thursday.

Isaiah Hartenstein Out 5-6 Weeks After Injury in Thunder vs. Nuggets Preseason Game

Oklahoma City Thunder center Isaiah Hartenstein will be sidelined for five to six weeks with a "small, non-displaced" left hand fracture, ESPN's Shams Charania reported on Thursday.

The former New York Knicks star suffered the injury during Tuesday's preseason win over the Denver Nuggets, per Charania.

Oklahoma City's center depth will now be tested with both Jaylin Williams and Kenrich Williams also sidelined by injury. Ousmane Dieng could get more minutes in their absence.

The Thunder opens the regular season next Thursday against the Nuggets in Denver.

Jaylin Williams has been recovering from a right hamstring strain, which the team has indicated would be reevaluated after the preseason.

Depth forward Kenrich Williams is meanwhile still recovering from knee surgery he underwent in September.

The injury recovery timeline cited by Charania would sideline Hartenstein for at least 16 games, meaning the Thunder will likely have to wait until at least late November to see him pair up with big man Chet Holmgren.

Holmgren was slated to play at the 4 with Hartenstein in the starting lineup, but with the former Knicks star injured he could potentially move back to center with third-year guard Jalen Williams a candidate to start at power forward. After averaging just under 30 minutes per game in his Rookie of the Year runner-up campaign last season, Holmgren may be slated for bigger minutes as the Thunder call on him to step up in the first month of the season.

The Thunder have more available depth in the backcourt, where starters Shai Gigeous-Alexander and Luguentz Dort and reserve players Alex Caruso and Cason Wallace are on track to play in the season opener.

That depth should allow the Thunder to stay on trajectory for another postseason berth despite the loss of Hartenstein, but could mean further struggles at the glass for a team that ranked among the NBA's bottom four teams in rebounding last season.

The offseason addition of Hartenstein, who averaged 8.3 rebounds per game for the Knicks last season, was meant to address that issue, so the Thunder will hope he is able to make it back into the starting lineup as soon as possible.

Alex Caruso Contract Extension Eyed By Thunder GM: We Want Him Here for 'Long Time'

After trading for Alex Caruso in June, the Oklahoma City Thunder are hoping to keep him beyond his current contract that expires after the 2024-25 season.

Thunder general manager Sam Presti told reporters on Wednesday that they hope to have Caruso around "for a really long time."

Oklahoma City acquired Caruso from the Chicago Bulls for Josh Giddey in a rare one-for-one player trade. The move was praised from the Thunder's perspective because of how well Caruso fits on paper with a talent group that already includes Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams.

B/R's Andy Bailey gave the Thunder an A for all of their offseason moves, with the Caruso addition being singled out because he can "punish opposing defenses that choose to pack the paint rather than close out to his open catches, and he won't take many (if any) on-ball opportunities away from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Jalen Williams."

The Thunder have plenty of room to operate under both tax aprons right now. They are $17.4 million under the first apron going into the 2024-25 campaign. Things will get more difficult with Holmgren and Williams eligible to sign extensions next summer.

Gilgeous-Alexander, who is signed through 2026-27, is eligible for a four-year, $295 million extension after the upcoming season.

Caruso is unlikely to have a price tag nearly as high as those three players, but he would seem to be in line for a sizeable raise from his $9.9 million salary in 2024-25.

The 30-year-old is one of the best defensive players in the NBA. He has made the All-Defensive team and earned Defensive Player of the Year votes in each of the past two seasons.

On top of his unique defensive prowess, Caruso has developed into a very reliable shooter. He shot 40.8 percent from three-point range on a career-high 4.7 attempts in 71 games for the Bulls last season.

Expectations are very high for Oklahoma City this season after earning the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference in 2023-24. The Thunder lost in the second round of the playoffs in six games to the Dallas Mavericks.
