Sri Lanka edged Bangladesh by 13 runs to win the opening one-day international in Mirpur.

The hosts, who won the toss and chose to field at the Shere Bangla National Stadium in a match reduced to 43 overs per side, dismissed Sri Lanka for 180 in 40 overs.

However, the Tigers fell short in their reply.

Despite a promising start, Bangladesh were bowled for 167 in the 40th over.

Sri Lanka had stumbled to 67-8 before Thisara Perera rescued his side with 80.

Perera, batting at nine, blasted six sixes in his 57-ball knock and shared an 82-run partnership in 14 overs with Sachithra Senanayake for the ninth wicket.

Rubel Hossain dismissed both openers in his first three overs. Sri Lanka then lost key man Kumar Sangakkara for eight in the 11th over.

Of the next five batsmen, only Dinesh Chandimal made double figures, but he was one of two men to be run out while Arafat Sunny picked up wickets in consecutive overs—including that of skipper Angelo Mathews.

However, Perera rescued his side and added a further 31 for the 10th wicket with Lasith Malinga. The fast bowler was caught behind for a duck, though, as Sri Lanka failed to bat out their allotted overs.

Bangladesh's reply started badly. Malinga removed Anamul Haque for a second ball duck, but Shamsur Rahman and Mominul Haque put on 79 for the second wicket.

Haque was caught at point for 44 as Perera got in on the act with the ball. Rahman was then run out in the 20th over for 62.

Star batsman Shakib Al Hasan was also run out soon after, which prompted a Bangladesh collapse. Senanayake picked up two wickets and Mathews claimed three, including the crucial scalp of Mushfiqur Rahim for 27.

Sri Lanka clinched the victory when Rubel Hossain was run out after a mix-up with Al-Amin Hossain.

The hosts lost both openers in the first eight deliveries before Senanayake picked up the wickets of key man Shakib Al Hasan (12) and Anamul Haque (24).

Debutant Sabbir Rahman top scored with 26, but only Mortaza (17) of the other batters reached double figures. Lasith Malinga ripped through the Tigers batting, taking 3-20.

Sri Lanka lost openers Kusal Perera and Tillakaratne Dilshan in the space of three balls after they put on 23 for the opening wicket.

Mahmudullah, who replaced Sohag Gazi after Bangladesh lost the opening T20I by two runs, removed Dinesh Chandimal cheaply. The visitors were under pressure when Mortaza removed Angelo Perera and Angelo Mathews in the same over before Nuwan Kulasekara was run out.

Kumar Sangakkara looked as if he was going to guide his side home but perished for 37, caught at backward point off Rubel Hossain to leave Sri Lanka needing 25 runs off the final 20 balls with three wickets remaining.

However, Thisara Perera's unbeaten 35 took them to the brink, before Senanayake found the boundary behind square leg off the final ball of the innings.

The teams now head to Dhaka for a three-match ODI series, which begins on Monday.

Sri Lanka beat Bangladesh by two runs in a thrilling first T20 International in Chittagong.

The hosts won the toss and elected to field at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium but were only able to restrict the visitors to 168-7 in their 20 overs.

In reply, the Tigers came perilously close and needed three off the final delivery, but Anamul Haque was caught and bowled by Thisara Perera.

Sri Lanka lost veteran opener Tillakaratne Dilshan for a duck in the first over when he was clean bowled by Mashrafe Mortaza.

They lost wickets at regular intervals, including Kumar Sangakkara—the man of the series in the Tests—for 11, but Kusal Perera kept the scoring ticking over.

The 23-year-old left-hander hit seven boundaries and a six in his 64 off 44 balls before being the fifth wicket to fall in the 14th over.

However, some big hitting from Nuwan Kulasekara, who struck 31 off 21 balls, boosted the visiting total.

Bangladesh made a strong start to their innings with a 52-run opening partnership between Tamim Iqbal and Shamsur Rahman.

Rahman (22) and Iqbal (30) went in consecutive overs, but Shakib Al Hasan (26) and Nasir Hossain (16) also made better than a run-a-ball contributions as Anamul Haque anchored the innings.

They needed 36 off the final three overs but lost debutant Mithun Ali for a first ball duck and were left requiring 17 off the final over.

Haque hit three boundaries to move to 58 off 44 balls but failed to dispatch a full toss off the final ball to the fence, hitting it straight up in the air as the hosts fell short.

Set a nominal 467 to win, the hosts finished on 271-3 at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.

It means Sri Lanka win the two-match series 1-0.

Resuming on 12-0 after an ultra-safe declaration late on day four by Angelo Mathews, the Tigers batted in controlled fashion to avoid defeat.

Tamim Iqbal batted for a minute short of two hours before he was bowled through the gate for 31 by leg-spinner Kithuruwan Vithanage, who got one to turn out of the rough.

Shamsur Rahman went shortly before lunch for 45 when flight from off-spinner Dilruwan Perera produced an inside edge which went on to pad and then stumps.

Imrul Kayes was trapped lbw for 25 midway through the afternoon and there were a few concerns in the home dressing room.

However, Mominul Haque and Shakib Al Hasan batted out the rest of the day in an unbroken 120-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

Haque scored his third Test century, the ton coming off 167 balls with 11 boundaries, with Shakib contributing an unbeaten 43.

Mathews defended the timing of his declaration in the post-match ceremony, as reported by ESPN Cricinfo.

They batted well, but I think we could play another Test on this wicket right now. The pitch didn't do much and once the ball got soft there was nothing in it for the seamers.

Bangladesh have really improved from the last game. They did pretty well though the bowlers had very little help.

Not really [about the delayed declaration], it was a good pitch and they could have gone for it [if the target was too small]. We bowled pretty well and they didn't show much intent about going for the target.

Kumar Sangakkara was named man-of-the-match and man-of-the-series after becoming just the second man in Test history to score a triple century and a century in the same match.

Kumar Sangakkara made more history as Sri Lanka set Bangladesh 467 to win the second Test in Chittagong.

Sangakkara followed on from his first innings 319 with 105 in the second innings. as the tourists declared on 302-4.

The hosts reached 12-0 at the close and need to bat out the final day at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium to avoid losing the series 2-0.

Bangladesh resumed their first innings on 409-8 and added just 17 more runs with Ajantha Mendis picking up the final two wickets to finish with a career-best 6-99.

Sri Lanka had earned a 161-run first innings lead and had advanced to 68-2 at lunch, with Mahmudullah removing both openers Dimuth Karunaratne (15) and Kaushal Silva (29).

Shortly after the adjournment, Mahela Jayawardene was dismissed for 11 by Shakib Al Hasan, but then Sangakkara took over.

He survived a chance on 36 when Nasir Hossain dropped a chance at deep mid-wicket and went on to make his eighth consecutive 50-plus score against Bangladesh.

The 36-year-old left-hander brought up his 34th Test century with a six over wide long-on off Sohag Gazi, his ton coming up off 143 balls.

He departed on the next ball, attempting a fine sweep off a straight ball, but not before he had made the third highest run total in a Test match.

A 145-run partnership with Dinesh Chandimal had taken Sri Lanka's lead to 384, but captain Angelo Mathews delayed the declaration to allow the 24-year-old to score his third Test century.

Kumar Sangakkara made a career-best 319 as Sri Lanka piled on the runs on Day 2 of the second Test against Bangladesh in Chittagong.

The tourists were all out for 587 at tea at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium with Bangladesh reaching 86-1 in reply.

Sangakkara's total was the 17th highest in international history and the biggest against Bangladesh since they entered Test cricket in 2000.

Sri Lanka, who won the first Test last week in Dhaka by a resounding innings and 248-run margin, resumed on 314-5 and took the score to 440-7 at lunch.

Kithuruwan Vithanage contributed 35 in a 90-run sixth wicket partnership before being unluckily adjudged lbw to Nasir Hossain with an inside edge missed by the umpire.

The dismissal came an over after Sangakkara moved to second on the all-time list of double century makers in Test history, behind Sir Don Bradman, who has 12.

Shakib Al Hasan trapped Dilruwan Perera lbw for just one in his first over of the day and removed Ajantha Mendis in the same way in the afternoon—although not before he made 47.

By that time, the total had moved past 500 and Sangakkara had reached 250, contributing exactly half of a 100-run eighth wicket partnership.

Sangakkara had moved within 10 runs of his highest international score when slow left-armer Shakib picked up his 11th five-wicket haul in Tests—an arm ball seeing Suranga Lakmal trapped in front for a duck.

However, the 36-year-old left-hander went past his previous best score of 287—made against South Africa in 2006—with a four off Shakib and then reached his maiden triple century with consecutive sixes off the next two balls.

He was finally caught at long-on off Nasir Hossain after a 482-ball vigil in which he had struck 32 fours and eight sixes.

After winning the toss and electing to bat, the tourists reached 314-5 at stumps with Sangakkara making 160 not out and Jayawardene contributing 72.

The hosts, who were looking to bounce back after being destroyed by an innings and 248 runs in the opening Test in Dhaka last week, made a positive start as Sri Lanka were reduced to 49-2.

Kaushal Silva departed for 11, trapped lbw after missing an attempted sweep of spinner Sohag Gazi.

Gazi opened the bowling after Bangladesh dropped seamers Robiul Islam and Rubel Hossain and brought in Mahmudullah and Abdul Razzak, leaving Al-Amin Hossain as the only non-spinner in their attack.

Hossain also struck in the opening session when Dimuth Karunaratne cut straight to Mahmudullah at point after making 31.

Jayawardene joined Sangakkara at the crease with the score on 49 and they took the total to 71 at lunch before batting all the way through the afternoon as Sri Lanka reached tea on 196-2.

Sangakkara completed his 34th Test century, shortly after the adjournment, from 146 balls as he tickled Mahmudullah for four down to long leg.

Their partnership ended on 178 when Jayawardene was trapped lbw by Mahmudullah for 72.

Dinesh Chandimal departed for 27 when he attempted a big shot off Shakib Al Hasan only to get a leading edge to Imrul Kayes, back in the Bangladesh side after a two-year exile, at point.

Shakib picked up his second wicket late in the day as Sri Lanka captain Angelo Mathews was clean bowled for five after attempting to slog the slow left-armer.

However, Sangakkara ended the day unbeaten, his innings featuring 19 boundaries and three sixes.

Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene has made a superb start to 2014, showing that he has plenty of energy and ability in international cricket despite his advancing years.

The 36-year-old scored 430 runs in January to open the year in great form, already scoring two centuries including the seventh double century of his career.

It was not an easy start for Jayawardene in Sri Lanka’s first Test of 2014, as he was dismissed cheaply twice in the drawn match, but he recovered in the second game in Dubai.

His 129 helped the tourists take a victory in that game as they took a commanding first-innings lead as Pakistan failed to take advantage of the familiar conditions.

In the following game, Jayawardene passed 40 twice but that was not enough for Sri Lanka as they fell to defeat after a stunning chase of 302 in just 57.3 overs by Pakistan.

From their series in the United Arab Emirates, Sri Lanka immediately moved onto Bangladesh for the start of their Test series, and Jayawardene immediately made an impact with 203 not out.

His innings enabled the Sri Lankans to take another win by an innings and 248 runs, and shows that Jayawardene is still a force to be reckoned with on the international stage.

A batting average of 86 for the month of January is a superb return for the former Sri Lanka captain, who will enter February in good form ahead of what promises to be a busy period.

Standout Performance:

Jayawardene’s most important performance of January was not his 203 not out against Bangladesh in Dhaka, but his 129 against Pakistan in Dubai in the early days of 2014.

Sri Lanka had bundled the hosts out for 165 in Dubai, with only Khurram Manzoor managing to pass 50 in the face of some superb bowling by the tourists.

In response, Sri Lanka were struggling slightly at 88-3 when Jayawardene arrived at the crease, having lost Dimuth Karunaratne, Kumar Sangakkara and Dinesh Chandimal early on.

With support from opener Kaushal Silva, who made 95, and captain Angelo Mathews with 42, Jayawardene went serenely to 129 before being dismissed with the score on 341.

The tourists were bowled out soon afterward for 388, handing them a substantial first-innings lead of 223 as Pakistan returned to the crease.

In response, the home side could only manage 359 all out, meaning the Sri Lankans needed just 137 to win the game and take the lead in the series, which they managed for the loss of just one wicket.

Jayawardene’s 129 was the highest score in the game and was absolutely critical for Sri Lanka to earn a win away from home.

Sri Lanka’s tour of Bangladesh continues in February with their final Test before two Twenty20 internationals and three ODIs.

Following this short tour, the Sri Lankans stay in Bangladesh for the Asia Cup, an ODI tournament that also features Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India and Pakistan.

With just one match against each team and the top two in the league table reaching the final, every team will want to hit the ground running, and Jayawardene will be crucial for Sri Lanka’s challenge.

Off-spinner Dilruwan Perera then ran through the rest of the top order, picking up three wickets before lunch.

Shakib Al Hasan (25) and Mominul Haque (50) were trapped lbw before Mushfiqur Rahim (14) was clean bowled to leave the Tigers teetering on 150-6 at lunch.

Lakmal then trapped Sohag Gazi (23) and Robiul Islam (one) after the adjournment, allowing Perera to complete the task by removing Nasir Hossain (29) and Rubel Hossain (17) to finish with figures of 5-109.

However, it was Mahela Jayawardene who was named man of the match following his first innings double century.

The 36-year-old told the post-match presentation ceremony, as reported by Cricinfo, that he was delighted to hit a Test 200 for the first time in over four years.

It has been some time since I got a big one. I thought it was a great game by the team as everyone put their hand up and performed, so it was a good outing.

I think the wicket played really well, and even today there was a little bit of pace for our quicks, and for the spinners it was spinning, but the important thing was the bounce which really helped us. Overall, a good Test wicket.

It is all about handling situations, that is where our guys did well. We applied ourselves and made sure not to lose our wickets up front. There were times where their spinners bowled well, but we were able to handle the situation well and pull through in the end.

In reply the hosts, who were skittled for 202 on Day 1 in their first innings, were 36-1.

Jayawardene made 203 not out, captain Angelo Mathews contributed 86 and Kithuruwan Vithanage hit a maiden century as Sri Lanka posted an incredible first innings lead of 498.

Jayawardene and Mathews put on 179 for the sixth wicket, with the former captain bringing up his 33rd Test century off 163 balls.

Mathews departed 14 runs short of his third Test century midway through the afternoon when he was caught by Marshall Ayub at short mid-on off Sohag Gazi.

However, Sri Lanka reached 600 just before tea with Vithanage playing fluently and the 22-year-old, in just his third Test, brought up his ton off just 99 balls.

He contributed 103 of the 176 runs in the unbroken seventh wicket partnership before Mathews pulled his side out as soon as Jayawardene had completed his seventh Test double century after nearly seven hours at the crease.

The hosts were faced with batting six-and-a-half sessions to save the match and suffered an immediate blow as Tamim Iqbal went for 11 in the fourth over.
