Trae Young's Dominance of Brunson, Knicks Praised By Fans as Hawks Advance in NBA Cup

Dec 12, 2024

Current bragging rights in the rivalry between Trae Young and New York Knicks fans belongs to the Atlanta Hawks guard.

Young and the Hawks defeated New York 108-100 in Wednesday's NBA Cup quarterfinals matchup at Madison Square Garden. Atlanta advanced to the semifinals in Las Vegas as a result and will face Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks.

Young struggled some with his shot at 8-of-22 from the field, but he finished with a double-double of 22 points, 11 assists and five rebounds. His passing in particular helped the Hawks flip a halftime deficit into an impressive road victory.

It was far from a one-man show, though, as Jalen Johnson did a little bit of everything with 21 points, 15 rebounds, seven assists, two steals and two blocks, while De'Andre Hunter provided a spark off the bench with 24 points.

Karl-Anthony Towns posted 19 points, 19 rebounds, five assists, three steals and three blocks, while Jalen Brunson added 14 points and eight assists.

But it wasn't enough to counter Young, who drew plenty of reaction from social media:

It is always going to generate attention and headlines when Young plays at Madison Square Garden, as he has become one of the biggest enemies of Knicks fans throughout his career. It was more of the same from the start Wednesday, as the crowd consistently booed the Hawks guard.

However, New York's defense kept him in check in the early going, as he didn't hit a single three in the first half.

Throw in Towns stuffing the stat sheet and notching a double-double in the first half, and the Knicks built a seven-point lead by intermission. Atlanta had nobody who could match up with the four-time All-Star, who extended his game to the outside when needed and found ways to score in the lane.

And then everything switched in the third quarter.

Young drilled back-to-back three-pointers to get going all while dishing out assists to Johnson. The Hawks started getting out in transition, taking advantage of the spacing that comes from the attention Young draws and hitting their outside shots. The result was a 34-18 advantage in the third and a nine-point lead for the visitors heading to the fourth.

New York cut into the deficit some in the fourth quarter, but Atlanta had an answer every time.

And, to the disgust of Knicks fans, Young was skipping down the court when he was the one providing those answers with a string of assists for a Johnson dunk, Dyson Daniels three-pointer and Hunter alley-oop to push the advantage back to double digits.

It was a shocking turnaround that silenced a raucous crowd, and it was only fitting that Young dribbled out the clock amid a chorus of boos at midcourt as time expired.

NBA Rumors: Hawks 'Continue to Rebuff' Trade Interest in Larry Nance Jr.

The Atlanta Hawks are reportedly uninterested in dealing away one of their veteran centers.

According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Hawks "continue to rebuff all trade interest in versatile veteran forward Larry Nance Jr. ... just as they did throughout the offseason after Nance arrived in Atlanta alongside defensive ace Dyson Daniels in the Dejounte Murray trade" from the New Orleans Pelicans.

Stein's report comes after fellow insider Jake Fischer recently reported that Atlanta would be open to moving Nance for the right offer.

"I know the Hawks really like Larry [Nance Jr.]. I don't think they're actively shopping him," Fischer said during a live stream on Bleacher Report on Dec. 6. "If they get some real value for him on the trade market, they would absolutely meet and probably move him."

Nance has appeared in nine games this season and hasn't played since Nov. 17. However, he was inserted into the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Denver Nuggets after power forward Jalen Johnson was ruled out due to a shoulder injury.

In his nine appearances, Nance averaged 7.9 points, 2.4 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 15.6 minutes while shooting career highs of 65.1 percent from the field and 63.6 percent from three-point range. In his lone start this year on Nov. 1 against the Sacramento Kings, he played just eight minutes and had two points and three rebounds. However, he had a breakout performance on Nov. 12 when he dropped 19 points on 7-of-10 shooting with five three-pointers in a win over the Boston Celtics.

It sounds like the Hawks prefer to hold onto Nance as a depth piece in the frontcourt rather than deal him away before the Feb. 6 trade deadline.

Hawks Fined $100K for Holding Trae Young Out of NBA Cup Game vs. Celtics

The Atlanta Hawks' decision to hold Trae Young out of an NBA Cup game on Nov. 12 against the Boston Celtics has cost the team $100,000.

On Tuesday, the NBA announced it had fined the Hawks organization after an investigation determined Young "could have played in" under the league's standard medical policy.

Young was ruled out from the game with what the team said was right Achilles tendinitis. He was one of six Hawks players who didn't play in the NBA Cup opener against the Celtics.

The Celtics went into the game banged up as well. Jayson Tatum and Al Horford were listed as questionable, but they both wound up playing.

Tatum, who rolled his ankle in a Nov. 10 game against the Milwaukee Bucks, had his worst shooting game of the season. He went 5-of-16 for 20 points against the Hawks.

Despite having a shorthanded roster, the Hawks pulled off one of the biggest upsets of the season so far with a 117-116 win over the Celtics in Boston. Jalen Johnson made up for Young's absence by posting a triple-double with 18 points, 12 rebounds and 10 assists.

The Hawks had two days off prior to their matchup with the Celtics. They previously played on Nov. 9 against the Chicago Bulls. Young played 38 minutes in that game and there was no indication coming out of it he was injured.

Young was back in the starting lineup for Atlanta's next game on Nov. 15. The win over the Celtics remains the only game he has missed so far this season.

Atlanta currently leads Eastern Conference Group C in the NBA Cup standings with a 2-1 record. The team will wrap up group play on Friday when it hosts the Cleveland Cavaliers.

It's been a good week for the Atlanta Hawks.

Just a few days removed from defeating the defending champion Boston Celtics in the preliminary game of the NBA Cup, Atlanta moved to 2-0 in the tournament with a 124-110 victory over the Washington Wizards.

The victory puts the Hawks in a solid position to advance to the knockout stage of the in-season tournament. It was also the first time in three meetings that Atlanta was able to claim a victory over Washington.

It was also another showcase of the top two picks in the 2024 NBA Draft, Zaccharie Risacher of the Hawks and Alex Sarr of the Wizards.

Risacher had 11 points, two rebounds and two assists in 27 minutes while shooting 4-of-12 on field goals and 0-of-4 from three-point range. Sarr had a stronger day, scoring 20 points with seven rebounds, four steals, three blocks and two assists.

The star of the day, however, was Hawks guard Dyson Daniels. He scored 25 points with six steals, four rebounds, three assists and two blocks.

Fans took to social media to praise Daniels' effort and strong defensive start to the season.

Daniels is leading the NBA in steals at 3.6 per game. Notably, he has 25 steals in his last four games. He has helped Atlanta to a 5-7 start to the season.

The Hawks are still undefeated within East Group C and have games remaining against Chicago and Cleveland.

In the second meeting between the No. 1 and No. 2 picks in the 2024 NBA draft, Alex Sarr and the Washington Wizards picked up another win over Zaccharie Risacher and the Atlanta Hawks.

In their first meeting on Monday, Sarr and Washington won a close one against the Hawks, but Wednesday's win was much more comfortable as the Wizards won 133-120.

Both rookies put up solid numbers on Wednesday, though Risacher slightly outplayed Sarr by picking up a few buckets after the game was mostly decided. Sarr finished with 11 points, five boards, four blocks and a steal while Risacher had 17 points, six rebounds, two blocks and a steal. Risacher's 17 points were a career-high.

After the game, fans applauded both rookies for continuing to look solid in their young careers.

It's clear Sarr and Risacher both have a ways to go before they are difference-makers for their respective teams, but they continue to show promise through the early parts of the season.

The biggest upside the two have shown has been their defense as they've made blocking shots a habit. If they can hit their stride on offense, both will be players to watch over the next few years.

Zaccharie Risacher Says He's a 'Regular Dude' in NBA; Was 'Super Athletic' in France

The Atlanta Hawks selected wing Zaccharie Risacher with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NBA draft, but the Frenchman has already come to a realization regarding the difficulty of making the transition to the NBA.

According to John Hollinger of The Athletic, Risacher gave an honest assessment of his situation during training camp, saying: "Back in France I was super athletic, and now I'm just a regular dude."

The 19-year-old was a highly decorated player in Europe before making the leap to the NBA, earning the EuroCup Rising Star award and LNB Élite Best Young Player award in 2024.

Risacher's countryman, Alex Sarr, was viewed as the likely No. 1 pick throughout much of the pre-draft process, but Risacher surpassed him late in the game, and Sarr ended up going second overall to the Washington Wizards.

It is fair to say that Risacher was not as heralded as many other recent No. 1 overall picks with the most obvious example being fellow Frenchman Victor Wembanyama, who went first overall to the San Antonio Spurs in 2023.

Like Wembanyama, Risacher did not have the benefit of playing college basketball in the United States, but Wemby was still a well-known prospect, which was not necessarily the case for Risacher among more casual fans.

Thanks in large part to his 7'4" height, Wembanyama instantly established himself as an NBA superstar last season, averaging 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 3.6 blocks and 1.2 steals per game, and winning the NBA Rookie of the Year award and finishing second in NBA Defensive Player of the Year voting.

It doesn't appear as though things are going to come as easily for Risacher, who is now four games into his NBA career.

Risacher has started two of the four games and is averaging just 7.3 points, 2.5 rebounds, 1.0 assist and 1.0 block in 22.5 minutes per contest, while shooting only 30.3 percent from the field and 21.4 percent from beyond the arc.

Given his age and lack of experience playing against grown men, it isn't shocking that Risacher is going through some growing pains during his rookie season.

Risacher is likely used to getting by primarily on talent, but since essentially every player in the NBA is an elite talent, he will need to become a more complete player in order to succeed.

Zaccharie Risacher Admits NBA is 'Big Adjustment' After Struggles in Hawks Debut

There will be better days ahead for Zaccharie Risacher.

The No. 1 overall pick of the 2024 NBA draft was just 2-for-8 from the field in his debut, although his Atlanta Hawks earned a 120-116 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday.

"I'm only 19, so this is a big adjustment for me," Risacher said, per Paul Newberry of the Associated Press. "I'll be better and better and better."

It started off in perfect fashion, as he drained a three-pointer on the first shot attempt of his career.

However, he ended up with just seven points, one rebound and zero assists in 19 minutes off the bench. He was also just 1-of-4 from three-point range and 2-of-4 from the free-throw line with one turnover, so efficiency will be a potential area of improvement as he becomes more experienced.

At least Risacher didn't have to wait for his first career win, as Trae Young poured in 30 points while Onyeka Okongwu added 28 points off the bench. The duo was enough to survive 36 points from Cam Thomas for a Nets squad that doesn't have much star power this season.

Young figures to spearhead the offensive attack for the Hawks in the majority of games, but Risacher can be an important secondary option if he does get "better and better" and starts to fully live up to his potential.

Atlanta Hawks rookie Zaccharie Risacher, the top overall pick in the NBA draft this summer, hit the very first regular-season shot he took in his NBA career, a catch-and-shoot three off a Trae Young assist.

https://twitter.com/BleacherReport/status/1849242704535801970

His debut went downhill from there.

The rookie wing struggled during Wednesday's 120-116 win over the Brooklyn Nets, finishing with seven points on just 2-of-8 shooting from the field. He added one rebound, no assists and one turnover in 19 minutes. He also missed two free throws in four attempts.

Here was the other shot he made:

Not every rookie can break the NBA upon hitting the league like Victor Wembanyama did last season, and Risacher entered the league a far less polished product. That showed on Wednesday, a fact that didn't escape NBA fans and pundits alike:

https://twitter.com/sasuhive/status/1849261988670804085

B/R's Jonathan Wasserman compared Risacher to scoring wings like Michael Porter Jr. and Harrison Barnes back in his April scouting report of the young prospect, noting that his "valued archetype, translatable skill set and room to improve" made him one of the safer players available, alongside his "potential to add more creation and playmaking from his ball-handling development."

The 2024 NBA draft didn't offer a highly regarded group of prospects, especially near the top of the board, but 3-and-D wings with excellent athleticism and length—and the potential to grow into secondary playmakers—are incredibly valuable in the modern NBA.

Whether Risacher can check off all of those boxes remains to be seen. One game is obviously a minuscule sample size. But for Risacher, his NBA debut left plenty of room—namely on the offensive end—for growth and development.

Jalen Johnson, Hawks Agree to 5-Year, $150M Contract Extension Ahead of NBA Season

Jalen Johnson is a long-term building block for the Atlanta Hawks.

Atlanta and the forward agreed to a new five-year, $150 million extension on Monday, per NBA insider Chris Haynes.

ESPN's Shams Charania noted the deal is fully guaranteed, while ESPN's Tim Bontemps added that there are no options in the extension.

This comes after the Hawks exercised club options on his contract for the 2023-24 and 2024-25 campaigns. He was also scheduled to be a restricted free agent ahead of the 2025-26 season, which meant there wasn't as much urgency for an immediate deal since the team could match any offers he received in that scenario.

Still, Johnson was extension eligible, and his play ensured this wasn't a particularly difficult decision.

The 2021 first-round draft pick was a secondary contributor for his first two seasons and was not a major part of the rotation even though he flashed glimpses of his potential at times.

And then his third season happened.

Johnson took significant strides and ended up averaging 16.0 points, 8.7 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 1.2 steals and 0.8 blocks per game while shooting 51.1 percent from the field and 35.5 percent from three-point range in 2023-24.

He was a double-double threat every time he stepped on the floor who battled on the boards against taller players and was versatile enough defensively to guard multiple positions from his forward spot.

Throw in the ability to extend his game beyond the arc when defenders collapsed on Trae Young all while attacking the rim with his athleticism and finishing prowess, and he impacted virtually every facet of the game.

Johnson's two-way impact was clear when opponents shot 4.1 percent worse from three-point range and 2.1 percent worse from within six feet of the basket than their normal averages when he guarded them in 2023-24, per NBA.com.

Those numbers underscored how he could guard all over the floor, which was something the Hawks needed with Young's questionable defense on the perimeter.

Atlanta lost in the play-in tournament to the Chicago Bulls, but Johnson was a bright spot in a disappointing season. He looked like All-Star Games will be in his future and is just 22 years old.

That is the exact type of true building block a team looking to establish itself as a long-term contender in the Eastern Conference needs, and Atlanta made sure he isn't going anywhere for the foreseeable future with this move.

The NBA is approaching its 15-man roster deadline for the 2024-2025 season on Monday, and several teams have some big decisions to make and money to spend.

Atlanta Hawks small forward Jalen Johnson is approaching the deadline of his rookie contract extension and according to NBA insider Jake Fischer, there is "optimism around the NBA" that the Hawks and Johnson will find an agreement of at least a $30 million average annual salary prior to the deadline.

Johnson is facing the same deadline as other NBA rising stars such as the Golden State Warriors' Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody, as well as the Chicago Bulls' Josh Giddey.

"It's going to be an interesting weekend," one NBA Agent told Fischer on Friday night.

Johnson was chosen by the Hawks in the 2021 NBA Draft with the No. 20 overall pick. He has averaged 9.1 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game with Atlanta while shooting 51 percent from the field.

The Hawks and Johnson will open their season on Wednesday against the Brooklyn Nets at home.
