Syracuse Crunch Start Run to Calder Cup Tonight

Apr 18, 2008

The Crunch enter tonight's game on a 15 game winning streak. According to some of their players, they don't plan to change the rough and tumble style that brought themt to this point:

"If it (an altercation) comes down, we'll answer the bell. We're not going to change our game for anyone else," said Syracuse enforcer Jon Mirasty.

"It's a fine line. But I think we'll be right on that line," said Syracuse captain Zenon Konopka. "I think it will be more intense than in the regular season. I think there will be more fights in this Manitoba series than there would be in a regular seven-game stretch."

Coach Ross Yates tempers that a bit:

"We have to continue playing the way we're successful with," said Syracuse coach Ross Yates. "But there's times we went overboard, and we have to curb that. It's retaliation penalties we have to stay away from."

Their first series playoffs schedule is below:

Game 1 – Fri., Apr. 18 – Manitoba at Syracuse, 7:30
Game 2 – Sat., Apr. 19 – Manitoba at Syracuse, 7:30

Game 4 – Fri., Apr. 25 – Syracuse at Manitoba, 8:30
*Game 5 – Sat., Apr. 26 – Syracuse at Manitoba, 8:30
*Game 6 – Mon., Apr. 28 – Manitoba at Syracuse, 7:00
*Game 7 – Tue., Apr. 29 – Manitoba at Syracuse, 7:00
This is great experience for our young players. They are learning what it takes to be a pro and what it takes to win as a pro. Any playoff experience is just icing on the cake and hopefully this team can make a long run at the Calder Cup.

Moose-Monsters: Manitoba Mangles Lake Erie

Mar 26, 2008

The Monsters returned to home ice Tuesday evening at Quicken Loans Arena in fifth place in their division.  They played a second place Manitoba Moose squad, who’d owned them five out of six games this year.  Tonight the Moose would make it six of seven, stomping the Monsters 7-2.  After the game coach Joe Sacco said there was really nothing positive to take out of the contest.  He was right.

The Monsters opened the game in grand fashion, scoring on the power play just three minutes and four seconds in, after Manitoba’s Kevin Estrada went off the ice for a high stick.

Two penalties and three minutes later, the Moose sported a five-on-three advantage.

Wyatt Smith went off for the Monsters for hooking, and Jeff Jillson the same roughly a minute later.  The penalty unit of the Monsters did an excellent job the killing off both advantages and preserving the 1-0 lead.  Wyatt Smith went to the box a second time with a little over five and a half minutes left in the first.  Once again a hooking call; the penalty kill was up to the task.  That pretty much ended anything positive you could say about the Monsters play on this day.

With one minute remaining, all the Monsters wanted to do was make it out of the first with the lead.  They blew it with 48 seconds left on a trickler that slowly leaked into the goal from Jannik Hanson.  Brad Moran registered the assist on the goal that shouldn’t have been a goal.    The Moose out shot the Monsters 20-5 in the first.  While it sounded lopsided, most of the shots were from way out or were not very good chances.

The second period WAS lopsided; the ice slanting entirely Manitoba’s way.  The Moose scored three in total second period domination.  While the Monsters out shot the Moose for the period, they were still trailing 31-18 in the pucks-on-goal department.  The first goal for the Moose came less one minute in.  Mark Derlago scored, with an assist to Brad Moran.  Three minutes later, Pierre-Cedric Labrie scored with assists to Gred Rallo and Michael Grabner.  Finally twelve plus minutes into the period, making it 4-1, was Mark Derlago assisted by Brad Moran yet again. Lake Erie mustered up a couple of rushes, but they were stonewalled by Moose Goalie Drew MacIntyre, who had a great outing.

The third period opened just like the second.  A minute and a half in, Manitoba scored on the power play on a shot over the left shoulder of Goalie Mike Wall. The goal was scored by Michael Grabner, assists by Colby Genoway and Danny Grouix.  Less than five minutes in, the Moose struck yet again, extending the lead to 6-1.  Mike Wall finally got the hook in favor of Tyler Weiman.  This goal was scored by Greg Rallo, assisted by Colby Genoway.  Just for yucks, the Moose added a seventh goal, this one scored by Danny Grouix, from Genoway and Baumgartner.  That put at least three moose in multiple points scoring for the day.

The Monsters finally got a retaliatory goal with six and a half minutes left in the game. The goal was registered by Eric Healey, assisted by Hensick and Lundmark.

Even Mitch Love, the Monsters defenseman that has the most penalty minutes on the team for fighting, got his butt handed to him in a very uneven square off.

Another fight broke out between Disilva and Estrada, and it was a doozy.  Both men landed pretty good blows.  Both were escorted from the ice, as less than five minutes remained.  The only thing left for the crowd to hope for was the last four plus minutes would go by quickly, and no one on the Moose would end up with a hat-trick.  Mercifully, the game ended 7-2.

March 28th is baseball cap night, dollar dog, and dollar Pepsi Night.  Every night face painting, hair painting, sign making and shooting the puck is free!!  You can’t beat that for

Third star of the game – Manitoba Michael Grabner

Second Star – Manitoba Mark Derlago

Star of the game – Manitoba Brad Moran

Meyer Scores Twice In 3-2 Rochester Loss

Jan 5, 2008

The Manitoba Moose scored three early goals, and it was all uphill from there for the struggling Amerks.

While Rochester managed to have 23 more shots on goal than the Moose (35-12), two late goals by Stefan Meyer weren’t enough to put them over the top.

Adam Dennis was pulled at the end of the first period, after allowing three goals in the first 11 minutes.  Tyler Plante finished the game without allowing any more goals.

The first goal was scored by Manitoba's Luc Bourdon, when he fired a shot through the five-hole of Dennis.  Martin Lojek screened Dennis as he was skating in front of the net to get back into position.  Once Dennis saw the puck, it was too late—and it was in the net.

On the second goal, Dennis made the save and deflected the puck to Mike Funk. Funk then tried to knock it away—but instead, it fell right on to the stick of Mike Keane, who easily put it into the net.

The third goal was scored unassisted by Alexandre Boulduc.  As he skated in on net, Peter Aston went down to the ice to try and block a shot, and Boulduc skated around him,

Dennis must’ve been anticipating a pass, and provided an easy opening between his body and the goal post that Boulduc shot the puck through.

The entire team managed to put a lot of pressure on Manitoba in the second and third periods.  Every chance they had to bring the puck into Moose's end of the ice, they worked hard to get some scoring chances.

Meyer scored the Amerks' first goal of the game, at 6:43 of the third on the power play.  Marek Zagrapan fed a cross-ice pass to Mike Weber, who fired a shot. Meyer was parked in front of the net, and as the puck trickled past Corey Schneider, he stuffed it into the net.

Shortly after that, the Moose had the chance to take a 4-1 lead, as Bourdon fired a shot from the point—but Plante made an outstanding glove save.

At 14:08 of third, Meyer made it a 3-2 game, as he skated untouched to the front of the net and Adam Taylor fed him a perfect pass to knock it into the net.

With under a minute left, Mark Mancari shot the puck from the point. The puck was knocked down and slid through the goal crease, but no one was able to knock it in.

The Amerks are now winless in their last nine games against Manitoba, on a five game losing streak, and in last place in the AHL—but we saw a great effort put forth by the team tonight, something which can’t be said about previous games.

There seemed to be more chemistry between the players on the ice, which the team needed.  It was also mentioned that maybe the Manitoba Moose thought it would be an easy game and took the Amerks for granted—but given the state of the Amerks this season, we’re going to call it a great effort against the second-place team.

Clark MacArthur was called up to the Buffalo Sabres earlier on Saturday and did not play.  Franklin MacDonald was a healthy scratch.  Andrej Sekera is still out with the flu.  Mike Card suffered a concussion on Friday night, and did not play.

The Amerks next game is on Friday at home against the Manchester Monarchs.  Game time is at 7:35 and will also be broadcast live on Time Warner Sportsnet Channel 26 in Rochester as well as Hot Talk 1280 WHTK and B2 Networks.

Mancari Saves The Day, Card Injured, as Rochester Americans Finally Score.

Jan 5, 2008

With that effort, the Amerks once again avoided being put in the record books for all the wrong reasons.  Their scoring drought lasted 252:09, until Mancari scored his PP goal at 7:47 of the third period.  The only team with a longer scoreless stint was a team in New Haven in 1938-39, who went 258:49 without scoring a single goal.

Mancari only further proved why it is ridiculous that he has been rotting on the fourth line, while players with half of his skill and experience are getting double shifts.

As expected, the Amerks were defeated by the Manitoba Moose by the final score of 5-1 in Manitoba.  The two teams will meet again on Saturday night and we’ll probably experience a similar outcome.

In the third period, Pierre-Cedric Labrie of the Moose delivered a vicious hit to Mike Card of the Amerks which resulted in every player on the ice throwing punches.  Mike Card layed motionless on the ice and had to be assisted off.

Card had just returned on Wednesday, after missing over a month with a concussion.  He has been diagnosed with another severe consussion and will miss a lot of time.

The Amerks were given seven power play opportunities, but only Mancari was able to capitalize on one of them.

Dylan Hunter and Clark MacArthur returned to the Amerks, as did Tanner Glass, after playing in Florida.

Tyler Plante started in goal for the Amerks and made 16 saves, and his record with the Amerks fell to 1-6.

Franklin MacDonald and Adam Taylor were healthy scratches.  Andrej Sekera did not make the trip, and isn’t expected back on Saturday either.

Goals for the Moose were scored by Luc Bourdon (PP), Michael Grabner (2), Juraj Simek, and Brad Moran (

The two teams will face off again on Saturday night at 8:30pm EST. The game can be heard live on Hot Talk 1280 WHTK and live on B2 Networks.  Based on the way fists were flying in the third tonight, we may expect more of the same.

Amerks Need A Goal Against Moose Tonight

Jan 4, 2008

The Amerks are again on the verge of entering the record books, this time for the longest scoring drought in AHL history.

Last Friday was a must-win situation to keep the team from taking soul ownership of the record for longest losing streak—and they did just that and tied the record.

The Amerks have been shutout for three straight games and have not scored a goal in 204 minutes and 22 seconds.  They have to score before there is 5:33 left in tonight’s game or else they’ll break a 69-year-old record set by the New Haven Eagles in the 1938/'39 season.

The Amerks are expected to have Dylan Hunter back in the lineup, who has missed six games with a concussion, Tanner Glass has also returned to the Amerks from the Panthers, and will hopefully be able to make it to Manitoba in time.  Clark MacArthur is still questionable with a hip injury.  Also no word on whether or not Andrej Sekera made the trip after missing the game against Toronto with the flu.

The Amerks havn’t beaten the Moose in four games this season, and eight games total dating back to the 06'/'07 season.  They have been able to score goals in the three previous games against the Moose, so at least we know they can be scored against.

We know that the players are not proud of the way this season has gone, and I’m sure they’re aware of the record they are up against—so let’s hope they can pull off an upset win.

This season has snowballed into one of despair.  There has been a lack of consistency, chemistry, coaching, scoring, winning, and most importantly of all, a lack of stability on and off the ice.

One positive thing that seems to have happened is an improvement in goaltending.  Adam Dennis was great in net on Wednesday in Toronto, while the recent play of Tyler Plante has been promising.

Now we just need the coaching staff to figure out how to get some chemistry back on offense and score some goals.  We believe the players have the talent—but when coaches can’t figure out a way to mesh that talent together, we get to the point we’re at now.

If that can’t happen, it’s time for a change somewhere—but given the state of affairs off the ice, we probably won’t see anything like that happen in the middle of the season.

So the best we can hope for is staying out of the record books.

You can listen to tonight's game live on Hot Talk 1280 WHTK and B2 Networks.
