Wayne Rooney Says Pep Guardiola Gave Raheem Sterling the 'Mindset' to Improve

Pep Guardiola's tutelage has been the key factor in Raheem Sterling's improvement for Manchester City, according to Wayne Rooney.

Derby County forward Rooney detailed the impact Guardiola has had on Sterling's game during an interview with Jonathan Northcroft of the Sunday Times (h/t Simon Bajkowski of the Manchester Evening News):

"Raheem's a player who played on instinct, a lot of ability, and you're only seeing the best of him now. He has worked on it himself but it’s because of Pep Guardiola. Guardiola has got him in a mindset to know the game better and you see a massive difference. It’s knowing the right time to do things and Guardiola is the best at teaching that, in my opinion."

Rooney saw the early years of Sterling's career at the top level firsthand when the pair were team-mates for the England national team. Former Manchester United, Everton and D.C. United attacker Rooney retired from the Three Lions in 2017, just about the time Sterling was learning more from Guardiola.

The winger arrived in the blue half of Manchester two years earlier. He had established a reputation at Liverpool as a player with the pace to stretch any defence beyond breaking point.

There was also a decent range to Sterling's movement, and he had proved versatile enough to play anywhere along the front. Guardiola took charge at City in 2016 and quickly began refining some of the rough edges of Sterling's game.

Efficiency in front of goal began to grow, while Sterling also improved the timing of his runs. In the process, he became a key component of the City forward line, the player who most often helped cap passing moves with the decisive touch.

Sterling's goals helped the Citizens win two Premier League titles in a row. City took the crown in 2018 with a record 100 points, while last season's title was part of an unprecedented domestic treble which also included winning the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.

Team honours were joined by individual accolades for Sterling, who was named Young Player of the Year at the PFA awards in 2019:

While Guardiola deserves a lot of the credit, some praise is also due Mikel Arteta. The Arsenal head coach was on Guardiola's coaching staff until he returned to north London on December 26, but he has been credited with aiding Sterling's development.

Arteta has spoken about fixing the "bad habits" Sterling had learned when it came to controlling the ball, as well as the need to have him drop off markers and create more room to run.

Sterling's improvement in these areas has created a new challenge for Guardiola. He has had to focus his efforts on keeping the player grounded, with the City boss rejecting comparisons between Sterling, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo earlier this season.

Sterling had started the 2019-20 campaign in terrific form, en route to scoring 20 goals in all competitions. However, the 25-year-old hasn't found the net in the Premier League since a 3-2 defeat away to Wolverhampton Wanderers on December 27:

A quiet performance during the 2-0 loss in the derby against Manchester United at Old Trafford was the latest example of how far Sterling's form has deteriorated:

It means there is another test of Guardiola's ability to teach. He's helped Sterling take the next step in his development and become a legitimate superstar.

Now the onus is on Guardiola to help one of his best players emerge from a prolonged slump. Those efforts will be crucial amid reports City want to tie Sterling to a new contract and fend off rumoured interest from Real Madrid.

Wayne Rooney Talks 'Incredible' Alex Ferguson, Jose Mourinho 'Stubbornness'

Wayne Rooney has hailed the influence of former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, describing the coach as "incredible."

Rooney was brought to United by Ferguson in 2004 and went on to become a legend at Old Trafford. The forward departed the club in 2017 as the top scorer in United's history and having won numerous pieces of silverware.

The vast majority of his goals came under Ferguson, who retired as manager in 2013 after a glorious 27-year tenure. Rooney provided an insight into what the 13-time Premier League winner was like during his time as boss in an interview with The Sunday Times (h/t Goal):

"He was incredible. It wasn't complicated. The big thing was he had trust in people. He trusted his coaches to put sessions on, he trusted his players. People always ask how were his team talks—a lot of his team talks were just: 'You 11 are better than them. Go win the game.'"

Rooney was also asked what qualities he would take into his own coaching career from his previous bosses; the 34-year-old is in a player-coach role at Championship outfit Derby County:

"[Louis] van Gaal's preparation, Fergie's man-management, [Jose] Mourinho's stubbornness—I think sometimes you need that.

"Sam Allardyce knew what he wanted. You can only manage to the capabilities of your team and that's what Sam has always done. Once I go into it I'm sure I'll have my own way."

Rooney has the experience to become a successful coach. At United, he won five Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League, and he also became the England national team's record goalscorer, with 53 goals in his 120 appearances for the Three Lions.

The veteran recently took on United with Derby in the FA Cup, and despite being on the wrong end of a 3-0 loss, he showed flashes of quality:

Ferguson had a huge influence on Rooney's career, helping him to develop into one of the best forwards in the world.

Rooney was able to showcase the natural talent he had on the biggest stage, although Ferguson would frequently tap into the forward's industrious attributes too, asking him to do a job in wide areas. James Ducker of the Daily Telegraph recently referenced some of those tactical shifts:

The Derby man is clearly thinking about a coaching career for when he hangs up his boots, and it will be intriguing to see what type of manager Rooney becomes.

For the time being, his focus will be on the Rams, although it's unclear when their season will resume. All English Football League fixtures have been suspended until at least April 3 as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Wayne Rooney Recalls Taking Cristiano Ronaldo to McDonald's in Weight Gain Quest

Cristiano Ronaldo holds a refined reputation for treating his body like a temple, but Wayne Rooney recalled the forward using McDonald's Big Macs for weight gain while at Manchester United.

The two United legends spent five years as team-mates at Old Trafford; Rooney arrived at the club in 2004, one year after Ronaldo, who joined Real Madrid for what was at the time a world-record £80 million in 2009.

Ronaldo, 35, boasts one of the most famous physiques in sports, but Rooney told The Times' Jonathan Northcroft (h/t MailOnline's Kieran Lynch) there was a time when he used a less stringent approach:

"With Cristiano, when I first got to United we used to go to games and train together. I remember the night before a game stopping off at McDonald's because he wanted a Big Mac.

"He was trying to put weight on because he was so thin. I was driving the car, having to go through the drive-through to get him a Big Mac."

Rooney and Ronaldo were each part of the United team that won a UEFA Champions League and Premier League double under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2008.

Both players feature as some of the youngest to have scored 40 Premier League goals for United, per Sky Sports Statto:

Rooney has four sons and was in awe as to how his former team-mate—who also has four children—managed to maintain the regime he's come to adopt: "With four kids I don't know how he fits that in. You've got Ronaldo, who looks a million dollars, whereas I've never had the best body, but I can play 90 minutes, I can train every day. I have no worries physically. When I do, I'll stop."

Ronaldo's dedicated approach to maintaining his body and well-being is part of the reason he's scored at least 25 goals in each of his two seasons since joining Juventus in July 2018.

The Portugal captain has scored 53 goals in 75 appearances for the Bianconeri, and Rooney told CNN at the time of his move from Real Madrid that he would be a success at Juve:

Ronaldo's current diet methods are even influencing the next generation of superstars, such as Borussia Dortmund ace Erling Haaland, per Goal:

Rooney, 34, joined Derby County in January 2020 and could keep a playing role at Pride Park until the summer of 2022, when Ronaldo's current contract with Juventus is also scheduled to expire.

It's comforting to know a Big Mac on rare occasions is permitted for even a five-time Ballon d'Or winner, though it's fair to assume his weight-gain practices have since been updated.

In an interview with Marca's Pablo Polo and Sergio Fernandez in July 2019, Ronaldo indicated he's happy to play until the age of 40 provided his body allows for it.

Derby County started the game strongly against Manchester United and had two good chances in the opening 20 minutes at Pride Park.

Louis Sibley fired a shot just wide of the visitors' goal before Wayne Rooney saw a free-kick tipped around the post by goalkeeper Sergio Romero.

The Red Devils made Derby pay for those misses by scoring twice in eight minutes before half-time to take control of the tie.

Left-back Shaw netted his first goal of the season, hitting the ball into the turf and seeing it take a nick off Jesse Lingard and loop over goalkeeper Kelle Roos (UK video only):

Ighalo then doubled the visitors' lead after a pass from Shaw. The striker managed to side-foot home from close range despite the attentions of Craig Forsyth and Max Lowe (UK video only):

Derby came within a whisker of halving the deficit early in the second half. Martyn Waghorn glanced a Jayden Bogle cross from the right inches wide of the far post.

Igahlo made the game safe with 20 minutes of normal time remaining with his third goal in two games for the Red Devils.

The 30-year-old crashed an effort into the roof of the net after seeing an initial shot blocked by Bogle:

Derby continued to threaten and had chances in the closing stages. Jack Marriott forced Romero into a fine diving save, while the Argentinian also denied Rooney a goal against his former club with by tipping the striker's free-kick over the bar in stoppage time.

Goalscorer Shaw offered his thoughts after the match (UK video only):

The win means Manchester United extend their unbeaten run to nine games in all competitions, and they will fancy their chances of beating the struggling Canaries and making it through to the last four of the competition.

Manchester United's Odion Ighalo Talks 'Idol' Wayne Rooney: 'He Is a Fighter'

Manchester United striker Odion Ighalo is eagerly anticipating facing Wayne Rooney in the FA Cup on Thursday.

The Red Devils play Derby County at Pride Park for a place in the quarter-final of the competition, and ahead of the game, Ighalo was full of praise for United's all-time record goalscorer:

"Wayne Rooney is always an idol, like many players at United.

"He's a good guy. He is a fighter on the pitch, he fights until the end, from the start until the finish. He's somebody I've seen that never gives up in the game, and he's a good goalscorer.

"A little chance, a little space, he's going to score. He can shoot from outside, he can score in the box, he can score from anywhere.

"He's a great player. Good techniques, he has a good shot, good runs."

The Nigeria international added that the forward's presence and experience in the side will give the Rams "confidence."

Rooney, who joined Derby as a player-coach earlier this season, spent the bulk of his career at Old Trafford, where he racked up 253 goals in 559 games.

His efforts helped the club to win five Premier League titles, the UEFA Champions League, the UEFA Europa League, three League/EFL Cups and the FA Cup, among other honours.

Ighalo isn't the only one at United looking forward to facing him on Thursday. Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer played alongside Rooney at United before his retirement from playing 2007:

The 34-year-old recently celebrated a significant milestone in English football with a goal, and he did so in style:

In 14 matches for the Rams, Rooney has found the net four times.

The former England captain has been a forward for much of his career, but he has increasingly been used as an attacking midfielder in his later years. He's often been deployed in the centre of midfield by Derby boss Phillip Cocu.

As The Athletic's Ryan Conway observed, Rooney has done well in the deeper role:

That position may be less conducive to getting on the scoresheet, but he'll be a threat to United on Thursday.

Rooney has scored 23 goals in 48 appearances in the FA Cup, and he's also provided seven assists.

The winner of Thursday's fifth-round match will be away at Norwich City in the quarter-finals on the weekend of March 21.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Tips Wayne Rooney to Be Future Manchester United Manager

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes Wayne Rooney will return to Old Trafford as the club's head coach in the future.

Rooney will play against the Red Devils on Thursday, when his side Derby County welcome United to Pride Park in the FA Cup fifth round. The winners of the tie will visit Norwich City in the quarter-finals.

Much of the focus is on Rooney ahead of the game, and Solskjaer said he expects the forward to have a successful coaching career that will ultimately bring him back to Old Trafford.

"Yeah [laughter]," Solskjaer responded when asked whether the 34-year-old could become the manager at United one day. "It depends how much you put into the job and how much you want it because it takes over your life.

"It's the second best [job] after playing. I am sure there are many ex-players and managers who would like to have my job."

Solskjaer also outlined what he expects to see from Rooney as a player in Thursday's encounter:

Although the forward will be on the opposition team on Thursday, he will receive a positive reception from the travelling United fans.

During his 13-year stay at United, the striker became the club's all-time record goalscorer with 253 goals. Rooney also won the UEFA Champions League, five Premier League titles, the FA Cup and three League Cups, among other honours.

Since leaving United in 2017, Rooney has had spells with Everton and Major League Soccer outfit D.C. United, and he joined Derby in January. It's clear Rooney is considering prolonging his career in football when he hangs up his boots, as his role with the Rams includes some coaching.

For now, Rooney will still be confident that he can make an impact on the pitch. The former England captain's arrival prompted an upturn in form for Derby:

In recent weeks, the team have slipped back into an inconsistent groove, with just one win in their past five. Rooney has chipped in with four goals in his 12 appearances, including this excellent free-kick against Stoke City:

In the latter years of his career, Rooney has dropped into a deeper position, and it's anticipated he will line up in the same area against United. From there, Derby fans will hope his technical ability and in-game intelligence can help them over the line against the Red Devils.

Solskjaer will hope to be in the job for a while yet despite tipping Rooney to become boss in the future. While he remains under pressure, with United in fifth spot in the Premier League, winning some silverware would be a major help in solidifying his position.

Wayne Rooney: Manchester United the 'One Team I Wanted' for Derby in FA Cup

Derby County forward Wayne Rooney has said Manchester United were the "one team" he wanted to draw in the FA Cup fifth round.

The Red Devils will visit the second-tier side on Thursday, seeking to progress into the quarter-finals. The tie will see them go head-to-head with their all-time record goalscorer.

Rooney told Mark Froggatt of United's website he was hoping that he would get the chance to go up against his former side again:

"I can't wait! Obviously, the draw, the one team I wanted was Manchester United. We were on the coach, actually, going to the hotel the night before a game when the draw was taking place and there was a cheer when United came out.

"It is a great draw for us, having United come to our ground and for the fans it is a great game to go to. For us as a team it is a great challenge for us to come up against Manchester United, to see if we can beat them. It is a challenge but it is something we are all looking forward to."

Here is more of what the 34-year-old had to say about Thursday's match at Pride Park:

Rooney is in the early stages of his time with Derby and has moved clubs frequently since his departure from United in 2017. The former England captain returned to boyhood club Everton before departing for D.C. United in the summer of 2018. Rooney then joined Derby in January, where he has assumed the role of player-coach.

Overall, he's enjoyed a strong start to life at the Championship club and recently marked his 500th game in English football with a fine goal:

Although he will be determined to propel the Rams into the next round of the competition, there will no doubt be plenty of adulation for Rooney from the visiting supporters on Thursday. After all, not only is he the top goalscorer in the club's history with 253 goals, but he also won the UEFA Champions League with United, five Premier League titles, one FA Cup and three League/EFL Cups, among other honours.

On the eve of the match, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said he expects Rooney to provide a threat:

The Red Devils' priority this season will be pushing for a UEFA Champions League qualifying spot in the Premier League, although Solskjaer will be conscious of the fact that he has yet to win silverware as United manager.

Rooney may be past his best, but he's shown enough since leaving United to prove he can still be decisive in these types of matches. Given he's unlikely to come up against such high-calibre opposition many more times in his career, there should be plenty of fire on display from the Red Devils icon.

Chelsea vs. Liverpool

Liverpool come into the fifth round of the FA Cup on the back of suffering their first Premier League defeat of the season.

The Reds were stunned 3-0 by Watford on Saturday, ending their hopes of an unbeaten campaign:

The defeat followed a 3-2 win over West Ham United and a 1-0 loss at Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League, so Jurgen Klopp's side have shipped six goals in their last three games.

Chelsea are in even bigger trouble defensively, though.

They had to come from a goal down to salvage a 2-2 draw at Bournemouth on Saturday, per Goal's Nizaar Kinsella:

The Blues have not kept a clean sheet in eight games in all competitions, and no team has conceded more than their 39 in the Premier League's top half.

Frank Lampard's side have failed to win on 12 occasions at Stamford Bridge this season, too, having lost eight of those games, so it will be difficult for them against a Liverpool side looking to bounce back from their shock defeat.

Derby County vs. Manchester United

United's trip to Derby will see former Red Devils captain Wayne Rooney face his former club.

The 34-year-old is United's record goalscorer, with 253 strikes in 559 appearances.

He doesn't have a particularly good record when facing United, though:

The quality of the Red Devils' performances has improved since Bruno Fernandes joined the club from Sporting CP in January, too.

He pulled the strings for the first 65 minutes as United beat Club Brugge 5-0 in the UEFA Europa League on Thursday:

In four starts for his new side, he's contributed two goals and two assists, so with him in the team, United should have too much for the Championship outfit.

David Moyes Talks Declan Rice Future Amid Manchester United Transfer Rumours

West Ham United manager David Moyes has said the club is in danger of losing star midfielder Declan Rice this summer amid speculation Manchester United are tracking the player.

Rice has made impressive strides in recent seasons at London Stadium and is a fully fledged England international. However, the Hammers have toiled this term and are facing up to a relegation battle in the remaining weeks of the Premier League season; they started Week 26 in 18th in the table, a point behind 17th-place Aston Villa.

Moyes was asked about the 21-year-old ahead of West Ham's trip to Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday and said he's hopeful the club can do enough to keep him around beyond the summer, per the Metro:

"In my mind he is arguably the best holding midfield player in the country and the best thing about Declan is he will get better. Declan is carrying a lot of the team at the moment and he's the one who will carry on from Mark Noble when it comes to an end for him.

"Quite often when building a club you have to sell. I hope it's not the case with Declan but I said the same with Wayne Rooney and Joleon Lescott [at Everton]. But the team got better because we were able to sign the right players to replace them. If that ever came around [Rice leaving] I'd hope we'd be able to do the same here as well."

According to Craig Hope the Daily Mail, United hold a serious interest in Rice, with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reportedly sending his personal scout to watch the midfielder in action in January.

While Rice's form has dipped this term, he's shown enough in his career to suggest he will be around at the top level for a while. Defensively, the England international is alert to danger. Rice is capable of covering ground quickly, winning tackles and positioning himself to make interceptions, meaning he can provide an effective shield to a defence.

This season, he's been surrounded by a number of underperforming players. In a more consistent team and a more cohesive setup, Rice would surely up his game.

The Red Devils have struggled in midfield this season, although they spent an initial £46.6 million in January to draft in Bruno Fernandes to improve their creative options. Rice would solidify the base of the midfield, although if West Ham stay up, they will surely do all they can to keep him in the capital.

Derby County manager Phillip Cocu is eagerly anticipating a "beautiful game" when Rams captain Wayne Rooney takes on his former side Manchester United in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Derby booked their place in the next round with a 4-2 win over Northampton Town on Tuesday, and they'll host United at Pride Park on March 5.

Per Tom Doyle of the Evening Standard, Cocu said of Rooney:

"He's going to face the club where he had a wonderful career so of course it is special. He comes back from the States, joins us and now plays his old club where he had a great career. We have to wait for a month but I'm sure he'll be ready.

"It will be a beautiful game not just for Wayne, but everyone at the club. It's a great game to look forward to and we will also try to win it, against a strong opponent."

Rooney netted a penalty for the Rams in their fourth-round replay with Northampton:

The 34-year-old has now scored in three consecutive games for his new side, whom he joined as a player-coach after leaving D.C. United following two seasons in Major League Soccer.

He also has two assists in his eight appearances for Derby.

Rooney spent the bulk of his career at Old Trafford, where he returned 253 goals and 156 assists in 559 appearances. He is their all-time record goalscorer and sixth in the club's appearance charts.

During his time at the club, he won five Premier League titles and four League Cups, while he also won the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and FA Cup once apiece, among other honours.

He hasn't had much success when playing against the Red Devils, though:

Nor have Derby fared too well when playing United. Their meeting in March will be the sixth time since 2009 that they've been drawn against them in domestic cup competition, and the Premier League outfit have come out on top in four of their last five games.

However, the Rams did triumph on penalties in the most recent of those after holding United to a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup last season.
