Arsenal Disappoint Fans with 1-0 Loss to PSG in 1st Leg of Champions League Semifinal

Arsenal FC v Paris Saint-Germain - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 Semi Final First Leg

There are 90 minutes to play in the Champions League semifinal between Arsenal and PSG, but the Gunners find themselves in some trouble.

The Parisians won the opening leg on Tuesday at London's Emirates Stadium, 1-0, taking an important lead on aggregate before they host the second leg next Wednesday.

It was Ousmane Dembélé who provided the crucial moment, striking in the fourth minute as PSG overwhelmed Arsenal in the opening stages of the game with a suffocating press and blistering attack.

The Gunners would go on to calm down and wrestle control of the match as the first half wound down—and were largely the better side in the second 45 minutes, even scoring on Mikel Merino's header on a free kick before it was disallowed for being offside—but their failure to at least secure a draw has left them at a major disadvantage as the semifinal heads to Paris.

And fans and pundits know it:

This wasn't a full-strength Arsenal side, as Thomas Partey wasn't eligible to play in midfield after picking up a third yellow card in UCL during the quarterfinal victory over Real Madrid. He'll be available for the second leg.

The Gunners have also been down a pair of strikers for much of the season in Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus, and defenders Gabriel Magalhães and Riccardo Calafiori were out injured as well.

That diminished depth has hurt them in the Premier League, where Liverpool have already secured the title. And without Partey on Tuesday, Merino was moved back into the midfield, leaving the diminutive Leandro Trossard to play centrally in the attack—and leaving the Gunners without much height in the box.

Ultimately, however, a faster start from Arsenal might have rendered all of that a moot point. Instead, PSG jumped all over them, Dembélé took his chance while Arsenal failed to capitalize on their own, and the Gunners find themselves with a massive wall to scale in Paris a week from now.

Barcelona survived a spirited effort from Borussia Dortmund to advance to the UEFA Champions League semifinals for the first time since 2019.

Dortmund earned a 3-1 win in Tuesday's second leg of their quarterfinal matchup, but Barcelona won 5-3 on aggregate. Serhou Guirassy recorded a hat trick for Dortmund, but an own goal by Ramy Bensebaini in the 54th minute gave Barcelona the separation it needed.

Guirassy's goal in the 76th minute raised the drama, and things appeared to get even more intense when Julian Brandt found the back of the net in the 78th minute. However, Brandt was called for being offside, negating the goal. Barcelona was able to stave off Dortmund's late charges on its way to victory.

Fans on social media celebrated Barcelona for surviving and advancing to the semifinals on Tuesday:

Barcelona will open the semifinals on April 28 and will face the winner of the quarterfinals matchup between Inter Milan and Bayern Munich. Inter leads 2-1 after the first leg.

Declan Rice's Goals Leave Fans in Awe, Power Arsenal Past Real Madrid in UCL 1st Leg

Arsenal v Real Madrid - UEFA Champions League

Arsenal won their UEFA Champions League first-leg matchup after a dominant showing against Real Madrid on Tuesday.

Arsenal downed the Champions League holders 3-0 behind a pair of goals from Declan Rice and a goal from Mikel Merino.

Both teams had their share of chances in the first half, with Arsenal getting six shots off with four on target and Real Madrid taking five shots with two on target. Ultimately, neither team found the back of the net before the halftime break.

Real Madrid got the first look at goal in the second half when Kylian Mbappé's third shot of the game went into the side of the net in the 52nd minute. A few moments later, Arsenal broke the tie in the 58th minute with a goal from Rice off of a free kick.

After the spectacular go-ahead goal, Rice decided he wasn't done yet. In the 70th minute, he scored again on another free kick, this time finding the top corner to make it 2-0.

The bleeding didn't stop there for Real Madrid. Just five minutes later, Merino fired one in to make it a seemingly insurmountable 3-0 game.

Real Madrid can almost always come back from a deficit to stay in a match, but they didn't have enough on Tuesday, and it resulted in a spectacular win for Arsenal. Real Madrid will have the chance to bounce back from the loss as the two teams will meet again on Wednesday at 3 p.m. ET for a second leg matchup.

If Arsenal can keep their momentum going into Wednesday's meeting, it could be another dominant showing.

Liverpool ended group phase as the top team in the standings and arguably the favorite to win the Champions League title.

The Reds suffered their lone defeat in the first phase on Wednesday against PSV Eindhoven, but they were still able to hold on to the top spot because Barcelona settled for a tie against Atalanta.

Arne Slot's club has only lost three matches in all competitions this season. They've already passed several major tests, most notably a 2-0 victory over Real Madrid on Nov. 27.

The reigning Champions League champ, Real Madrid has endured some struggles so far with a 5-0-3 record to finish 11th in group play. The Whites will play a struggling Manchester City club in the knockout round.

This marks the fourth consecutive year that Real Madrid and Man City will meet in the knockout rounds. Carlos Ancelotti's club won two of the previous three, including a 4-3 victory on penalties at Etihad Stadium in the second leg of their quarterfinal matchup last year.

The winner of this year's matchup will advance to face either Atletico Madrid or Bayer Leverkusen in the round of 16.

Atalanta, the No. 9 seed, is the top-ranked team in the knockout phase and its first time advancing out of the group phase since the 2021-22 season. The club can tie its best-ever finish in Champions League play by reaching the round of 16.

When the knockout phase is complete after games on Feb. 18-19, UEFA will hold a draw to determine the round of 16 matchups and path to the final for the remaining clubs on Feb. 21.

The round of 16 will take place from March 4-12, followed by the quarterfinals (April 8-16) and semifinals (April 29-May 7). The 2025 Champions League Final will be held on May 31.

Champions League 2024-25: Final Standings, Bracket, Knockout Stage Format, Draw Info

Jan 29, 2025

The group stage of the UEFA Champions League officially came to a close on Wednesday and the standings are now final.

Liverpool, Barcelona, Arsenal, Inter, Atlético Madrid, Bayer Leverkusen, Lille and Aston Villa have all guaranteed their place in the round of 16, while the teams in the Nos. 9-24 positions will now be paired up in home-and-away knockout playoffs to determine the final eight teams that qualify for the round of 16.

The draw for those matchups will be held on Friday at 6 a.m. ET.

We'll use No. 22 Manchester City—who have a brutal path to the round of 16—to explain how the draw will work.

In the new system, the Citizens will face either No. 11 Real Madrid or No. 12 Bayern Munich, depending on Friday's draw. They would play the first of those games on either Feb. 11 or 12 and the second leg on either Feb. 18 or 19.

Once the playoffs are sorted, the round of 16 and knockout phase draw will be held on Feb. 21. Round-of-16 games will be held on March 4-5 and March 11-12, followed by the quarterfinals (April 8-9; April 15-16), semifinals (April 29-30; May 6-7) and the final on May 31.

As for how the draw will work for the eight teams that automatically qualified for the round of 16, No. 1 seed Liverpool and No. 2 Barcelona will only be eligible to play one each of No. 15 PSG, No. 16 Benfica, No. 17 Monaco and No. 18 Brest, depending on which two teams advance and how the Feb. 21 draw goes.

Likewise, No. 3 Arsenal and No. 4 Inter are only eligible to draw one each of No. 13 AC Milan, No. 14 PSG, No. 19 Feyenoord and No. 20 Juventus.

No. 5 Atlético and No. 6 Bayer Leverkusen are only eligible to draw one each of No. 11 Real Madrid, No. 12 Bayern Munich, No. 21 Celtic and No. 22 Manchester City. That's probably the most loaded segment of the bracket.

And finally, No. 7 Lille and No. 8 Aston Villa are only eligible to draw one each of No. 9 Atalanta, No. 10 Borussia Dortmund, No. 23 Sporting and No. 24 Club Brugge.
