Tommy Lloyd, Arizona Agree to New Contract Through 2029; Will Make Up to $6M Annually

Tommy Lloyd has found plenty of success during the start of his tenure as the head coach of the Arizona Wildcats men's basketball team, and the school rewarded him with a contract extension on Monday.

According to ESPN's Jeff Borzello, Lloyd and the school agreed to an extension that will keep him in place through 2029 and pay him $5.25 million in the first year. That payout will increase to $6 million by the fifth and final year of the extension.

"I am humbled and grateful to finalize a long-term extension here at the University of Arizona. I am energized by the support of our fans, our players, our alumni, President Robbins, the Board of Regents and our donors," Lloyd said in the program's announcement.

"All of us are aligned on maintaining a highly competitive and nationally recognized basketball program that provides a great experience for the student athletes. We will continue to honor the Wildcat basketball heritage and give everything we have to make people proud to say 'Bear Down!'"

Arizona hired Lloyd in April 2021 to replace the fired Sean Miller, who was the program's head coach when it was involved in the federal investigation into corruption in college basketball.

Lloyd was a Gonzaga assistant coach under Mark Few for 20 seasons before taking the job with the Wildcats. He helped lead the Bulldogs to the national championship game two different times and was involved in establishing the program as a national power.

The 2021-22 season was his first as a head coach, and he wasted no time making an impact as the Pac-12 Coach of the Year and Associated Press Coach of the Year. Arizona went 33-4 and won the Pac-12 regular-season title and conference tournament title.

It earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament but lost to fifth-seeded Houston in the Sweet 16.

The Wildcats went 28-7 in his second season and won the Pac-12 tournament once again before they were stunned as a No. 2 seed in the first round of the Big Dance. That loss to 15th-seeded Princeton hovered over the start of the current campaign, but Lloyd's team is 20-5 and No. 4 in the country.

Arizona is one game ahead of Washington State in the loss column in the race for the Pac-12 regular-season title and will once again face elevated expectations in March.

Winning in the NCAA tournament isn't the only challenge Lloyd will face with this new extension. Arizona is also headed to the Big 12 starting next season and will face a new group of opponents as it looks to maintain its status as a basketball powerhouse.

It now knows the coach who will be trusted in accomplishing that task for the foreseeable future following this development.

Bronny James Held to 2 Points, 2 Assists as Colorado Beats USC in 2OT

Bronny James had a quiet night off the bench, as USC blew a second-half lead before falling to Colorado in double overtime by the final score of 92-89 on Saturday night.

In his second consecutive game as a reserve, James notched two points and two assists to go along with one steal while connecting on one of his two field goal attempts. It comes as a disappointment after the freshman scored seven points and dished out three assists in just 20 minutes of action on Thursday,

While he wasn't extremely aggressive on offense, he showed off his improving defensive instincts as James has now recorded six steals in his past six appearances.

His only basket of the night was also an impressive one, catching a lob in transition and finishing through contact to deliver an improbable shot off the glass.

However, his lack of production and lack of playing time were both evident as the Trojans suffered the ninth loss in their past 11 games.

James has struggled to string together consistent performances throughout the year, as he lowered his scoring average to just 5.7 points per game after Saturday night's action. His next opportunity to bounce back will come against UCLA on Feb. 24.

Bronny James Scores 7 Points as USC Beats Utah, Ends 2-Game Losing Skid

Coming off the bench for the first time since February 1, Bronny James scored seven points to help USC snap its two-game losing streak with a 68-64 win over Utah on Thursday.

The freshman guard shot 2-of-4 from the field (1-of-3 from behind the arc) with three assists, three rebounds, one steal and one block in 20 minutes.

After trailing by as many as nine points in the second half, Utah went on a 15-4 run to take a 51-49 lead midway with 13:05 remaining. The Trojans scored nine straight points points to go back up 58-51.

James made a good play late in the second half when he grabbed an offensive rebound after Boogie Ellis' three-point attempt and drove to the basket for a layup to give USC what would be its final points until the final seconds.

The Utes did get back within two points on Branden Carlson's jumper with 2:01 left to play. The two teams combined to miss their next four field-goal attempts before DJ Rodman's layup at the buzzer to give USC the four-point margin of victory.

USC head coach Andy Enfield has been juggling his lineups recently in an attempt to find a spark. He moved James to the starting five for the previous three games, with Kobe Johnson coming off the bench.

The results were mixed for James in the starting lineup. He combined to shoot 6-of-19 from the field with 11 rebounds and 10 assists in those three games.

Johnson was back in the starting unit on Thursday. He scored nine points on 4-of-11 shooting with six rebounds and two assists in 32 minutes.

Thursday's win was just the second in the last 10 games for the Trojans. They have a 10-15 record with six games remaining in the regular season. Their next game will be on Saturday at Galen Center against Colorado.

USC entered the 2023-24 season with high expectations after landing the likes of top recruits in Isaiah Collier and Bronny James, but the program's struggles only continued on Saturday night against Stanford.

The Trojans were eviscerated by the Cardinal 99-68 and dropped to 9-15 on the season. It marked the team's second straight loss and eighth loss in its last 10 games.

Collier finished with 18 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals. His 18 points led the team.

James, the son of Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James finished with six points, three rebounds, three assists and one steal.

With James continuing to struggle to develop in an abysmal USC lineup, college basketball fans are calling for him to take his talents elsewhere:

https://twitter.com/MattMurph24/status/1756537834230497583

James entered Saturday's game averaging just 5.8 points, 3.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 15 games while shooting 36.1 percent from the floor and 26.7 percent from deep.

He's widely expected to make the jump to the NBA after this season, though it's worth wondering if he'll opt for another year in college basketball given USC's struggles.

The Trojans will be back in action on Thursday against Utah.

Bronny James had a nondescript showing Wednesday night as USC's prolonged slide continued in an 83-77 overtime loss to California.

Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James was on hand to take in the action:

Isaiah Collier, who scored a team-high 20 points, had a chance to put the Trojans up late but missed one of his two free throws inside the final 30 seconds of regulation. This was Collier's first game in nearly a month after he was sidelined due to a hand injury.

Cal guard Jaylon Tyson heaved up a deep three at the buzzer that was well off the mark to force the extra period.

With two minutes to go in overtime, there was still nothing to separate the two teams. Three-pointers on back-to-back possessions from guards Jalen Celestine and Jalen Cone gave the Golden Bears some breathing room and they didn't look back.

James finished with five points on 1-of-5 shooting along with a team-best five rebounds and one assist. The star freshman was a regular target of ridicule from the sellout Haas Pavilion crowd.

USC is now 9-14 overall and 3-9 in Pac-12 play, which is the worst record in the conference. The Trojans stay in Northern California for their next contest as they play Stanford on the road Saturday at 10 p.m. ET.

Bronny James' Passing Delights CBB Fans as USC Routs Oregon State

Bronny James had an opportunity to get in the USC Trojans starting lineup Saturday night and showcased some of his playmaking talent with the opportunity.

He scored nine points, grabbed three rebounds and added a steal in the Trojans 82-54 blowout victory over Oregon State. Passing the ball was James' best attribute in the game, however, as he had a game-high six assists and was noticeably in sync with his teammates.

https://twitter.com/JamesFamilyMuse/status/1753962674684416060

It was James' fourth start of the season and the third time this season that he had at least six assists in a game. The performance helped USC improve to 9-13 on the season.

Fans on social media praised his passing ability and celebrated the improvement he has shown in multiple facets of the game.

https://twitter.com/bronnymuuse/status/1753946902058393712

The Trojans will need to have a red-hot second half in order to be in play for the NCAA Tournament. A Pac-12 Championship and an automatic bid would get the team there, and seeing performances like this definitely helps that reality.

While Oregon State has a superior 11-11 record to the Trojans, it still is second-to-last in the conference standings. USC is currently occupying the last place spot, and navigating through the tournament will be extremely difficult.

Still, Saturday's win was a positive and James' strong play shows that this Trojans team is capable of doing some damage.

Bronny James Stuffs Stat Sheet as USC's Losing Streak Reaches 6 Games vs. Oregon

Bronny James had one of his best games of the season on Thursday night, but it came in yet another loss for USC.

The freshman guard scored six points, dished out a career-high seven assists and grabbed four rebounds in 22 minutes in the Trojans' 78-69 loss to Oregon. His two steals were tied for his most in a game this season.

Head coach Andy Enfield's team is reeling right now. They have lost six straight games and have the worst conference record in the Pac-12 (2-8). Their 8-13 overall record is tied with California for the worst among Pac-12 teams.

The six-game losing skid is the longest for the Trojans since the 2014-15 team lost nine straight.

USC's losing streak coincides with star freshman Isaiah Collier being out of the lineup for the past five games. He suffered a hand injury against Washington State on Jan. 10 that required surgery.

Enfield said before Thursday's game that Collier is "getting closer" to being cleared for practice, but he didn't have a specific date. He added the original four-to-six-week timeline for Collier is still on track.

On the bright side, James is starting to find some rhythm on offense. He's averaging 6.5 points on 44.4 percent three-point shooting, 4.5 assists and 4.3 rebounds in the last four games.

James made both of his three-point attempts against the Ducks. It's only his second game with multiple three-pointers in 13 appearances.

Another encouraging sign is that James has played at least 20 minutes in four of the past five games. He was on the floor for 22 minutes against Oregon.

If USC is going to pull itself out of this tailspin, it could happen soon. Its next two games are at home against Oregon State (3-7 record vs. Pac-12) on Saturday and at California (8-13 overall) on Feb. 7.

Bronny James struggled during USC's loss to UCLA, with head coach Andy Enfield's team falling by the final score of 65-50.

After starting in three consecutive games, James came off the bench against the Bruins. He scored just two points and grabbed four rebounds to go along with a block in limited action, missing all three of his field goal attempts.

James has struggled with inconsistency throughout the start of his freshman campaign, although his performance on Saturday was disappointing after he seemed to find a shooting rhythm over the past couple of games. In his two previous appearances, he scored 18 points and dished out 11 assists while hitting six of his 11 three-point attempts.

The team as a whole struggled against the Bruins' defense, shooting just 35.4 percent from the field. Fans were dismayed by James' quiet night in particular after he appeared to be turning a corner.

Saturday night's defeat was the Trojans' fifth consecutive loss, as the team has now fallen to 8-12 on the season with a record of just 2-7 in the Pac-12. Their next opportunity to break the streak will come on Feb. 1 against an Oregon team that currently owns a 14-6 mark through 20 games.

Windhorst: Bronny James Tabbed as 'No Doubt' NBA Draft 1st-Rounder by Some Insiders

USC freshman guard Bronny James has been limited in his first collegiate season, but being LeBron James' son is reportedly enough for team's to view him as a potential first-round draft pick.

ESPN's Brian Windhorst reported on Wednesday's episode of The Hoop Collective, "I've got people telling me, this guy's going in the first round, no doubt and not necessarily because of what he's showing at USC, but just because of the dynamics around the pick."

Bronny James has appeared in 11 games with three starts for the Trojans and is averaging 5.9 points, 2.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 19.6 minutes of action. His efficiency has left much to be desired, as he's connecting on 38.1 percent of his field goals and 25.0 percent of his three-pointers. His best game was a 15-point performance against Oregon State on Dec. 30, which coincidentally is his legendary father's birthday.

James is still finding his groove after he suffered a cardiac arrest during a team workout in July. Despite his struggles, he has still shown positives in his game while he continues working his way back into form.

"Players go through stretches during seasons where they shoot a very high percentage and sometimes, it goes the other way where they struggle for a few games," USC head coach Andy Enfield told ESPN's Myron Metcalf about James. "That's true for all players and all sports as well. Everybody has their highs and lows throughout the season. He's improved a lot. But he's only been playing for a month. He works very hard and he's had really good practices."

LeBron James has made it no secret that he hopes to one day play on the same team as his son, so it wouldn't be a surprise if a team takes a chance on Bronny in the 2024 draft in hopes of landing the NBA's all-time leading scorer for his 22nd season in the league.

Stanford women's head coach Tara VanDerveer has tied Mike Krzyzewski for the most wins in NCAA history.

VanDerveer earned her 1,202nd victory on Friday night in the Cardinal's 88-63 win over Oregon.

Speaking to the Pac-12 Network after her historic victory, VanDerveer gave praise to the players she's coached over the years for making this moment possible.

Krzyzewski has been in sole possession of the all-time NCAA wins record for men's or women's coaches since March 18, 2018, when he passed legendary Tennessee women's coach Pat Summit's mark of 1,098.

Coach K became the all-time winningest coach in college basketball history 11 months later when he surpassed Harry Statham with 1,123 wins. A portion of Statham's wins came as an NAIA head coach.

VanDerveer is in her 37th season at Stanford. She was hired by the program in 1985 and transformed the Cardinal into a national powerhouse. They have made the NCAA tournament in 35 consecutive seasons, the second-longest active streak in the nation behind the Tennessee Lady Vols (41).

Stanford has won three national titles and 13 trips to the Final Four under VanDerveer. She began her head-coaching career at Idaho in 1978 and remained there for two seasons before going to Ohio State for five years.

A five-time National Coach of the Year winner, VanDerveer was inducted into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame in 2002 and Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2011.

VanDerveer will look to surpass Krzyzewski on the all-time wins list on Sunday when the Cardinal host Oregon State at 5 p.m. ET.
