In the wake of LSU head women's basketball coach Kim Mulkey threatening legal action if the story dropped, Kent Babb of the Washington Post published a profile Saturday on Mulkey and her behind-the-scenes coaching style.

Mulkey, 61, is in the midst of her third season as the head coach at LSU and previously spent 21 seasons as the head coach at Baylor, and Babb's article focused on both stints and featured accounts from current and former members of both programs.

Some former players told Babb that for all of her success, including winning three national championships at Baylor and one at LSU, Mulkey has had a penchant for holding heated team meetings.

Players who have played for Mulkey said staffers have at times "mitigated the risk" of Mulkey's tongue-lashings getting recorded by confiscating players' phones beforehand.

A specific example given occurred in 2022, one day after two LSU players got into a heated altercation.

Mulkey allegedly "went ballistic" on the team, with one person present for the meeting saying, "My regret in this life, I didn't record this meeting."

It is also alleged that Mulkey has used intimidation tactics, including attempting to embarrass players by making them weigh in in front of the team.

Kelli Griffin, who played for Mulkey at Baylor from 2007 to 2010, and other former players told Babb that Mulkey often used that tactic and other forms of "shame" to get the desired results from her players, including calling out players during practices and meetings.

Griffin expressed her belief that Mulkey began treating her differently when she found out she was gay.

Griffin said, "Kim Mulkey is an amazing coach; the reason I went to Baylor is because of her," but added that Mulkey "made my life hell."

Mulkey and her attorneys denied allegations that she treated gay players "more harshly or differently" than others and included statements from multiple players to support her account.

Former Baylor player Morghan Medlock said she was in a relationship with Griffin and noted that she never saw Mulkey mistreat Griffin or any other gay player.

Former Baylor and LSU player Alexis Morris declared, "Coach Mulkey is not homophobic."

The most notable player coached by Mulkey during her time was Brittney Griner, who won a national title at Baylor before going on to become a nine-time WNBA All-Star.

Per Babb, Griner wrote in her memoir that Mulkey encouraged players to "keep your business behind closed doors."

Griner didn't come out as gay until after playing her final game at Baylor, but she also wrote in her memoir that Mulkey often chalked up any personal issues she was having to "girlfriend problems."

Before Saturday's story was released, Mulkey addressed it during a press conference last week, calling it a "hit piece" and questioning the timing since LSU is currently in the NCAA tournament.

Per ESPN, Mulkey added: "I've hired the best defamation law firm in the country, and I will sue the Washington Post if they publish a false story about me."

Mulkey's LSU team, which won the national title last season, is a No. 3 seed in this year's tournament and advanced to the Elite Eight with a 78-69 win over No. 2 seed UCLA on Saturday.

Speaking to ESPN's Holly Rowe before Saturday's game, Mulkey said she has not yet read the story.

"I can tell you I haven't read it," she said. "Don't know that I will read it. I'll leave that up to my attorneys."

Report: LSU's Kim Mulkey Criticized Angel Reese's Social Media, Talked GPA in Emails

The much-discussed Kim Mulkey story from Kent Babb of the Washington Post dropped on Saturday.

In the wide-ranging profile, Babb reports Mulkey said in two different emails that LSU star Angel Reese was left off an awards list last year because of her GPA and complained because she was one of her players who "stay on that social media crap."

It was already known that Reese was left off the Wooden Award list last season because she wasn't eligible.

When the list of 15 finalists was released in March 2023, Reese wasn't among them despite averaging 23.4 points and 15.6 rebounds per game for one of the best teams in the country at the time.

Per ESPN's Alexa Philippou, LSU confirmed Reese wasn't eligible for the list of finalists because she didn't meet all of the requirements for the Wooden Award. It wasn't specified which criteria Reese didn't satisfy.

The criteria listed on the Wooden Award website states candidates must have a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 since enrolling at their current university, exhibit strength of character on and off the court, contribute to team effort, and excel on offense and defense.

Mulkey said at the time that Reese was "in good academic standing" and her absence from the list may have been due to some other criteria she didn't meet.

"It's just there's a criteria on some of these awards like, a lot of them will have community service stuff. Some of them will have GPAs, yeah. She's academically fine," Mulkey explained.

Reese missed four straight games this season from Nov. 17-25 for unspecified reasons after being benched during a Nov. 14 game against Kent State for the second half.

"I could, but I won't," Mulkey said after the Tigers' win when asked about why Reese remained on the bench. "It was just a coach's decision."

Speaking to reporters after a victory over Texas Southern on Nov. 20, Mulkey seemed to indicate there was some sort of locker room issue.

"You always have to deal with locker room issues," she said. "Sometimes you don't know about it. Sometimes you want to know more than you're entitled to know. I'm going to protect my players, always. They are more important."

Amid the speculation about her absence, which included an online back-and-forth between the mothers for Reese and LSU teammate Flau'jae Johnson, Angel Reese wrote on X asking everyone not to believe everything they read.

Reese was back in LSU's starting lineup for a Nov. 30 game against Virginia Tech. She's started every game since then and helped lead the team to a win over UCLA on Saturday.

In between LSU tournament games last weekend, Mulkey, unprompted, threatened to sue the Washington Post if it published a "hit piece" about her:

"After two years of trying to get me to sit with him for an interview, he contacts LSU on Tuesday as we were getting ready for the first-round game of this tournament with more than a dozen questions, demanding a response by Thursday, right before we're scheduled to tip off. Are you kidding me?

"This was a ridiculous deadline that LSU and I could not possibly meet, and the reporter knew it. It was just an attempt to prevent me from commenting and an attempt to distract us from this tournament. It ain't going to work, buddy."

During her press conference on Friday, Mulkey declined to further address the situation:

Mulkey is in her third season as LSU's head coach. She was hired by the program in April 2021 following a surprising departure from Baylor after 21 seasons that included three national titles.

The Tigers won the national championship last season for the first time in school history.

The LSU Tigers had quite the scare in the second round of the NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament.

The No. 3 seed LSU entered halftime trailing 11th-seeded Middle Tennessee 36-32 and were down by as many as nine points early in the third quarter. However, the Tigers would roll from that point and run away with an 83-56 victory.

Conference USA player of the year Savannah Wheeler had 21 points, seven rebounds and five assists for the Blue Raiders, and Ta'Mia Scott had 15 points and five rebounds. Otherwise, LSU was able to hold every Blue Raider under 10 points.

LSU was led by Flau'jae Johnson, who had 21 points, four rebounds and two assists. Aneesah Morrow had 19 points and 13 rebounds, Mikaylah Williams had 16 points and six rebounds and Angel Reese had 20 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two steals.

This spirited effort from Reese and the rest of Kim Mulkey's squad had fans on social media projecting a chance at a repeat championship.

The win improves the Tigers record to 30-5 and advances it to the Sweet 16 for the second consecutive season. This will set up a matchup with either UCLA or Creighton in that round.

Kim Mulkey Rips LSU for 'Selfish' Play in Win vs. Rice: 'That Was a Bad Performance'

LSU women's basketball head coach Kim Mulkey criticized her team after the Tigers made it through the first round of the NCAA Women's Championship despite committing a season-high 24 turnovers.

LSU, a No. 3 seed, earned a 70-60 win over No. 14 Rice with a "bad performance" Friday, Mulkey said in a postgame interview on ESPN.

"I don't want to take anything away from Rice. I thought they played their hearts out. I thought it was exciting for their team," Mulkey said. "That's not the same team that LSU put on the floor in the championship of the SEC tournament."

Mulkey continued: "That was a bad performance today, and I thought it was a lot of selfish play today, and it starts with me on getting them ready, I guess."

As the defending champions, LSU were heavy favorites to win over Rice, but struggled with turnovers that led directly to 11 points for the Owls.

Although the Tigers maintained a lead for the majority of the game, the score remained close throughout. LSU led by just three points at the half and never gained more than an 11-point advantage, per Matt Guillermo of ABC 13.

Prior to Friday's win, LSU last played on March 10 during a 79-72 loss to South Carolina in the SEC Tournament Championship.

"I think some of it is, maybe we've been off ten days," Mulkey said. "Some of it is selfishness. Some of it is, maybe they just thought they were going to show up today and win. I don't have the right answer, I can give you lots of answers, but we'd better fix it before we play Middle Tennessee."

LSU is set to face Middle Tennessee State in the Round of 32 on Sunday. Game time is yet to be determined.

Angel Reese's double-double helped lift LSU to a 70-60 victory over Rice in the first round of the 2024 NCAA tournament on Friday.

The win was far from easy for the defending national champions, as head coach Kim Mulkey's team held a narrow 30-27 advantage at halftime. The lead was cut to just two points in the third quarter, although LSU was able to pull away.

Rice came within six points during the fourth quarter as well, but a jumper from sophomore guard Flau'jae Johnson as well as a pair of free throws from senior Last-Tear Poa helped put the game away.

Reese was unstoppable on the glass, pulling down 19 rebounds. Although the 2024 SEC Player of the Year shot just 1-7 from the field, she connected on eight of her 12 free-throw attempts to finish with 10 points.

Fans were impressed with her strong performance on both ends of the court, as she added one block and three steals.

The Tigers advanced to the second round, where they'll face off against the No. 11 seed Middle Tennessee on Sunday following the team's upset victory over No. 6 Louisville.

LSU's Angel Reese: I'll 'Be Able to Make Money' Regardless of WNBA Draft Decision

LSU women's basketball star Angel Reese isn't letting money influence her decision to potentially declare for the 2024 WNBA draft.

"For me, I've honestly learned that regardless I'm going to be able to make money staying or going," Reese told reporters on Thursday. "Understanding that my brand has been built, where I know that more than being in college is something I can do."

Although she's currently a senior, she still has an extra year of eligibility remaining due to the pandemic-shortened 2020-21 season.

She's teased the possibility of returning to the Tigers before, specifically hinting that she may choose to stay with the program in a post on X ahead of senior day on March 3.

Reese's dominance during LSU's title-winning tournament run in 2023 made her one of the most recognizable faces in the sport. According to the latest NIL evaluations from On3.com, she ranks No. 8 among all college athletes with a valuation of $1.8 million. She also ranks No. 2 among women's basketball players behind Iowa's Caitlin Clark, the sport's all-time leading scorer.

"The deals are going to follow me if I leave or stay," Reese added on Thursday. "I've built that relationship with a lot of these brands. I don't just have brands that are in college, I have brands that are long-term deals that are just past college and I think that's the difference."

If the 2023 Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA tournament ultimately chooses to declare for the draft, her legacy at LSU is a success regardless of the team's outcome in the 2024 tournament.

In 29 starts during her 2023-24 campaign, Reese averaged 19.0 points, 13.1 rebounds, and 1.8 steals per game while shooting 49.1 percent from the field. Now, she'll help the Tigers as they look to emerge from a first-round matchup with Rice on Friday.

Flau'jae Johnson's Brother Arrested for Role in LSU-South Carolina Fight

The brother of LSU guard Flau'jae Johnson was charged with assault and battery and disorderly conduct after leaving his seat and leaping onto the court during the Tigers' 79-72 loss to South Carolina in the SEC tournament championship Sunday.

According to the Associated Press, Trayron Milton was taken into custody by the Greenville Police Department and remained in jail Monday. Milton allegedly shoved down an SEC employee before scaling the scorer's table, walking onto the court and making contact with Gamecocks center Kamilla Cardoso.

The incident occurred during a brief scuffle between the two teams.

Tempers boiled over with 2:08 left in the contest.

Johnson fouled MiLaysia Fulwiley as the South Carolina guard was poised for a fast break. During the stoppage in play, Johnson shoved South Carolina forward Ashlyn Watkins as the two were crossing paths. That prompted Cardoso to push the sophomore wing to the hardwood, with Milton entering the frame moments later.

Once the dust cleared, Cardoso was ejected for fighting, which will leave her unavailable for the opening round of the NCAA tournament. Multiple players from both teams were also sent to the locker room for leaving the bench.

Cardoso apologized on X for her role the skirmish:

South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley told reporters Johnson also personally apologized in the game's aftermath.

This was the last time the Tigers and Gamecocks are scheduled to play this season. Depending on how the bracket shakes out, a March Madness rematch isn't off the table with both possessing the pieces to make a deep tournament run.

Kim Mulkey on LSU-South Carolina Scuffle: Wish Kamilla Cardoso Had Pushed Angel Reese

LSU women's basketball head coach Kim Mulkey commented on the altercation between South Carolina and the Tigers that featured Gamecocks center Kamilla Cardoso and guard Flau'jae Johnson.

"I wish she would have pushed Angel Reese," Mulkey told reporters after the game. "You 6'8", don't push somebody that little. That was uncalled for, in my opinion."

In the SEC women's basketball tournament final featuring LSU and South Carolina on Sunday, the Gamecocks remained undefeated with a 79-72 victory.

Johnson is listed at 5'10" on the school's official website, while Reese is listed at 6'3". The sophomore point guard finished the game with 13 points, four rebounds, and two assists on 4-of-10 shooting. Reese scored 15 points of her own, grabbing 13 rebounds and dishing out two assists.

Meanwhile, Cardoso recorded eight points, six rebounds, and three blocks in 22 minutes of action. She was one of the six players that were ejected for their involvement in the scuffle, with ESPN's broadcast reporting that Cardoso is also ineligible for the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

After the game, she apologized in a post on X.

While the loss in the conference title game is disappointing after the Tigers were national champions in 2023, Mulkey was also concerned with the fight creating a bad look for the sport.

"It's ugly," she said, via Andrew Lyon of Sports Illustrated. "It's not good. No one wants to be a part of that. No one wants to see to see that ugliness."

South Carolina head coach Dawn Staley issued an apology during an interview following the win.

"I just want to apologize to the basketball community," Staley said. "When you're playing in championship games like this, in our league, things get heated. No bad intentions, their emotions got so far ahead of them that sometimes these things happen. So, I want to apologize for us playing a part in that, because that's not who we are and that's not what we're about."

With the SEC title heading to South Carolina, both teams will focus on the NCAA Tournament where LSU will look to defend its crown.

LSU's Last-Tear Poa Hospitalized After Being Stretchered off with Head, Neck Injuries

LSU junior guard Last-Tear Poa has movement in her extremities and returned a clean CT scan after apparently suffering frightening injuries to her head and neck area during her team's 75-67 win over Ole Miss in the SEC women's basketball tournament semifinals on Saturday.

Lady Tigers head coach Kim Mulkey revealed the news to reporters postgame.

Per Cory Diaz of the Daily Advertiser, Poa was transported to St. Francis Hospital in Greenville, South Carolina, where the tournament is taking place, for further evaluation.

The injuries occurred after Poa attempted to draw a charge on Ole Miss' Madison Scott with just under six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. Poa hit her head and neck on the court under the basket as she fell.

She stayed down initially before trying to get off the court, but Poa laid back on the court as officials tended to her. Medical staff put Poa's neck in a brace before she was stretchered off the court.

Poa, a junior from Melbourne, Australia, entered the Ole Miss game averaging 5.0 points on 43.3 percent shooting, 3.1 assists and 1.2 steals in 20.7 minutes per game. She's played in 31 games (nine starts) for the No. 8 LSU Lady Tigers this season.

The injury obviously had a profound effect on her teammates and coaches, who still had to get through nearly six minutes of game time to finish off the win.

LSU star Angel Reese was one of them.

Players and coaches also prayed on the court post-incident:

LSU ultimately held on for the eight-point win and will now face undefeated South Carolina in the SEC tournament championship game on Sunday.

Angel Reese Hints at Possible LSU Return Ahead of Senior Day vs. Kentucky

LSU star forward Angel Reese, who has one year of eligibility remaining, will be honored at senior day March 3 against Kentucky. However, Reese hinted on X that this season might not be her last in Baton Rouge.

Reese, a senior, can play one more year at LSU after she and others who played during the pandemic-interrupted 2020-21 season were granted an extra season of eligibility.

A WNBA career awaits Reese, who just led LSU to a national championship. The Tigers are faring well again this year, going 23-4 thus far and sitting 13th in the latest Associated Press poll.

Reese, who played her first two seasons at Maryland before transferring to LSU before the 2022-23 campaign, was a unanimous first-team All-American and the NCAA tournament's Most Outstanding Player last year.

Obviously, the Tigers would love to welcome Reese back into the mix. She's enjoying another great season with 19.4 points and 12.8 rebounds per game and just posted her first 20-20 game of the year (25 points, 20 boards) vs. Auburn.

Reese said before the season that she was entering 2023-24 with the mindset that she would be treating this campaign like it would be her last. However, her post on X casts doubt that it will be.

For now, Reese and the Tigers are focused on another potential national championship run. That certainly won't be easy, especially with undefeated South Carolina towering over the rest of college hoops. But Reese knows what it takes to win it all and could very well lead the Tigers to the promised land again.
