The march to the Men's College World Series officially got underway with the start of the 2024 SEC baseball tournament on Tuesday.

Eight teams took center stage in Hoover, Alabama, for the first round, with the No. 5 through No. 12 seeds facing off in single-elimination games. The top four seeds, Tennessee, Arkansas, Kentucky and Texas A&M, all have first-round byes.

The tournament shifts to a double-elimination format when the second round begins on Wednesday, so Tuesday's winners are guaranteed to keep their season alive for at least two more games.

Here's a look at how things played out in the first round.

LSU 9, Georgia 1

LSU is facing an uphill battle to defend its 2023 Men's College World Series title, but it started its quest in a big way with a dominant win over Georgia.

The Tigers scored early and often, plating two runs in the first inning and never looking back. Left fielder Josh Pearson was responsible for the team's first three runs over the first two innings.

LSU added two runs in the fifth inning on RBI singles by second baseman Steven Milam and catcher Alex Milazzo. Milam followed up with a solo homer in the ninth inning that extended the Tigers' lead to 7-1.

LSU starter Gage Jump was lights-out on Tuesday, throwing seven innings while allowing one earned run and four hits and notching seven strikeouts.

The Tigers will face third-seeded Kentucky in the first game of Wednesday's slate.

South Carolina 10, Alabama 5

Things looked bleak for South Carolina when it faced an early three-run deficit against Alabama, but the Gamecocks put on a display of power that helped them rally and advance to the second round.

The Crimson Tide jumped out to a 3-0 lead after the second inning, and that's when the lights show began. The Gamecocks posted six runs in the third inning thanks to solo home runs by third baseman Gavin Casas and first baseman Ethan Petry followed by a grand slam by designated hitter Dalton Reeves.

Alabama managed to keep things close with two runs in the fourth inning, but South Carolina catcher Cole Messina provided some separation with a solo homer in the fifth and a two-run double in the sixth.

Gamecocks right-hander Chris Veach pitched 5.2 shutout innings in relief with just three hits allowed and six strikeouts.

South Carolina will face a tough test against No. 2 Arkansas on Wednesday.

Vanderbilt 6, Florida 3

Make it three wins in four games for Vanderbilt against Florida this season.

The Commodores continued their winning ways against the Gators, beating them 6-3 behind strong offensive days from Matthew Polk and Braden Holcomb, who each finished with two RBI.

Calvin Hewett added a solo shot in the win:

Bryce Cunningham earned the win on the mount, giving up five hits without a run or any walks across six innings. He struck out six.

The Commodores will now face Tennessee in the second round of the SEC Tournament on Wednesday.

Mississippi State 2, Ole Miss 1

The last game of Tuesday's action was a close one as Mississippi State snuck away with a 2-1 win over Ole Miss.

Will Furniss put the Rebels up 1-0 with a home run in the top of the fifth inning before Ole Miss blew the slim lead in the bottom of the ninth inning.

The Bulldogs snagged an exciting walk-off victory courtesy of a Connor Hujsak two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth:

Brooks Auger was also tremendous on the mound for Mississippi State, allowing just three hits and one run while striking out 13 batters in the win.

Mississippi State will now face No. 4 Texas A&M on Wednesday.

Eight teams enter the first round of the 2024 SEC baseball tournament with one goal in mind.

All of the programs want to win to stay alive for at least another few days in Hoover, Alabama.

The No. 5 through No. 12 seeds will face off in single-elimination games on Tuesday to narrow the tournament field to eight teams.

The tournament turns into a double-elimination format once Wednesday rolls around, so Tuesday's winners are guaranteed at least two more games.

Preview

The SEC tournament begins with one of the nation's best hitters on display at Hoover Metropolitan Stadium.

Georgia's Charlie Condon comes into the postseason with 35 home runs, 75 RBI and a .451 batting average.

Condon is considered to be one of the top prospects in the 2024 MLB draft. A strong postseason will only strengthen his case to be the No. 1 overall pick.

Condon and the Bulldogs take on a LSU Tigers team that could use a win to stay alive in the hunt to make the NCAA tournament.

On3's Jonathan Wagner projected LSU as one of the last four teams into the tournament in his most-recent bracket prediction.

The Tigers are the only team playing on Tuesday with their NCAA tournament hopes potentially on the line. They could use a win against UGA to feel safer about their prospects.

LSU comes into Hoover with some momentum off a series sweep of Ole Miss, who is expected to fall in the late game to rival Mississippi State.

Georgia lost its final two games of the regular season to Florida, so there is a chance it is susceptible to an upset.

Florida takes the diamond against Vanderbilt in the first game of the night session.

The Gators won four of their last seven games, but they lost a series to Vanderbilt in the regular season.

Vanderbilt tagged Florida's pitching for 15 runs in the first two games of that series on April 18 and 19.

Florida has one of the other stars in the draft class in Jac Caglianone, who is second to Condon in batting average and home runs in SEC play.

Vanderbilt possesses the better team. but Florida has the best individual player in the matchup.

The second game of the day between Alabama and South Carolina pits two struggling teams against each other.

The Gamecocks enter Hoover on a six-game losing run, while Alabama dropped three of its last five. Alabama has the edge in the matchup because it won the season series at the end of March.

Tuesday's four winners will go to play in Wednesday's quarterfinals. Kentucky faces the Georgia-LSU winner, Arkansas takes on either Alabama or South Carolina, top-seed Tennessee takes on Vanderbilt or Florida and Texas A&M awaits Mississippi State or Ole Miss.

Predictions:

Georgia over LSU

Alabama over South Carolina

Vanderbilt over Florida

Mississippi State over Ole Miss

The top teams in ACC baseball will compete in the conference tournament starting next week. Not only will teams look to bolster their standing ahead of the College World Series, but the top prospects in the conference will have the opportunity to highlight their skills as MLB teams look toward the future in July's draft.

Who will show up and show out and which teams will establish themselves as threats to win the tournament?

Which two Wake Forest players rank at the top of the conference's list of big-league prospects?

Team Rosters

Top Prospects

Nick Kurtz, 1B, Wake Forest Demon Deacons

A slow start and shoulder injury likely cost Kurtz the No. 1 spot in July's MLB Draft but he exploded shortly after, highlighting incredible power that will make him an intriguing prospect to teams who need power hitters.

MLB.com wrote, "Kurtz's signature tool is his well-above-average power to all fields, the product of outstanding bat speed, strength and a left-handed stroke designed to drive balls in the air. More than just a slugger, he's a complete hitter with no discernible weakness who crushes left-handers and right-handers and all types of pitches."

That power is reflected in impressive numbers including 21 home runs, 51 RBI, and a .318 average.

Chase Burns, RHP, Wake Forest Demon Deacons

Drafted in 2021 by the Padres, Burns opted to stay in school, where he filled the long-reliever role for the Tennessee Volunteers, was a big reason that team made the College World Series, and then opted to transfer to Wake Forest.

All he did there was establish himself as one of the top pitchers of the 2024 class, thanks to a slider that MLB describes as, "a true beast that sits in the upper 80s and has generated a 60 percent swing-and-miss rate during the last two seasons, and he also owns a plus low-80s curveball."

His fastball is iffy, often inconsistent, and identifiable by hitters, making it easier to hit despite sitting in 97-99 and, at times, reaching 102mph.

Still, it would not be surprising if he is the first pitcher off the board in July.

Bracket

Team Rosters

Top Prospects

Charlie Condon, 3B, Georgia Bulldogs

Bulldogs third baseman Condon had the best season in school history and one of the great offensive seasons in conference history, with a .450 average, 35 home runs, and 72 RBI in 200 plate appearances.

Per MLB.com, his average base running is made up for by his physical gifts.

"Though he's a below-average runner, Condon is reasonably athletic and covers ground with long strides once he gets going," the site stated.

Condon should be the consensus No. 1 pick but a conference rival with an ability to play two ways could usurp him for that coveted spot, held by the Cleveland Guardians.

Jac Caglianone, 1B/LHP, Florida Gators

Called "the best two-way player in the nation" by MLB.com, Caglianone compiled a .419 average, 28 homers, and 56 RBI in 203 at-bats.

The offense is already impressive. Add to that his pitching and you have a player that likely has Major League ball clubs salivating at the potential of adding him to their clubhouse.

The Tampa native went 5-1 as a starter and tallied a 4.07 ERA in 59.2 innings pitched. Struggles to find his command hurt his standing as a top-tier pitching prospect, with MLB suggesting he is a first-rounder based on his power, but a "second-rounder on the mound."

Caglianone has undergone Tommy John surgery.

Hagen Smith, LHP, Arkansas Razorbacks

Smith overcame Tommy John surgery to become one of the best pitchers in the nation, with a wicked slider that operates in the mid-to-high 80s. That may be his best and most consistent stuff but his fastball, according to MLB, "operates in 93-97 and touches 100 mph."

The site also said of his somewhat awkward delivery, "Smith employs far from a textbook delivery, working from a low-three-quarters slot with some crossfire that makes it tough to pick up his pitches and also to throw strikes at times."

Like most power pitchers, he can be a dependable starter in the bigs but will have to find his command and control to be the best he can be at the next level of competition.

The championship game of the Black College World Series took place Saturday and it was a chance for redemption for Bluefield State.

Just one day after falling to Talladega College in the winner's bracket, Bluefield rode a four-run ninth inning in order to take home the championship via a 5-1 score.

Despite the final score, the majority of the game was a pitcher's duel. Talladega limited Bluefield to just six hits through the first six innings, and Bluefield starter Zach Powell twirled 8.1 innings while scattering nine hits and recording seven strikeouts.

Peyton Lewis hit a clutch double in the top of the ninth, which set the tone for a destructive inning and put the Big Blue in command heading into the bottom of the inning. Tahraun Hammond would come in and shut the door in the bottom of the inning, securing the victory.

Lewis had three hits, Hammond and Noah Moritz had two each and Chris Larkin delivered the dagger single that drove in the two winning runs.

This was Bluefield's second tournament win in the four years of the event and the program ends its season with a 33-15 overall record.

Day 3 of the Black College World Series took place Friday in Montgomery, Alabama, and the field has been officially trimmed down to two teams.

Four teams entered the day with a chance to advance to Saturday's final, although the road for two team's was a bit more difficult than the others.

Talladega College took on Bluefield State University for a chance to clinch a ticket to the Final and be just a single win away from the title. Following that matchup, Edward Waters University would take on Florida Memorial University for a chance to stay alive for the nightcap against the loser of the morning game.

Here's a look at how the day's action went.

Friday Scores:

Talladega College 3, Bluefield State 2

Edward Waters University 3, Florida Memorial 2

Bluefield State 12, Edward Waters University 7

Saturday Schedule (Times ET):

Game 10: Bluefield State vs. Talladega College, 3 p.m.

Game 11: Bluefield State vs. Talladega College, 30 minutes after Game 10 (if necessary)

Talladega College 3, Bluefield State 2

This was the least pressured game of the day, considering that an elimination was not at stake.

Talladega College advanced to the final with the victory and have a lot of room to work with in order to earn the title. The Tornadoes just have to win one of two games, as it enters the final undefeated in the tournament.

An Allen Morel solo home run in the fifth inning gave Talladega a lead, and the team's would trade runs and the game was tied at 2-2 in the eighth. That's where Jeriel Lamboy played the hero, stroking an RBI single that gave the Tornadoes the lead it needed to win.

Talladega had seven hits and committed one error while Bluefield had six hits and a clean day in the field. The Tornadoes pitching staff recorded seven strikeouts.

Edward Waters University 3, Florida Memorial 2

For the second time in the tournament, Edward Waters University faced Florida Memorial. For the second consecutive time, Edward Waters would emerge victorious.

All of the damage was done in the middle innings, as the two sides traded a run in the fourth-and-fifth innings. However, Edward Waters loaded the base once again in the sixth inning, and a walk to Leonel Garcia would bring in the games' leading run.

Edward Waters had nine hits while Florida Memorial only mustered six. This was the end of the road for Florida Memorial, as the run came to a close with a 1-2 record.

Bluefield State 12, Edward Waters University 7

Edward Waters staved off elimination in the afternoon contest, but a rematch of the morning's action was apparently meant to be.

Edward Waters led 4-0 in the third inning, but Bluefield State would first put one run on the board and then Korbin Bostic smacked a line drive over the right field fence to secure a grand slam and a 5-4 lead.

Bluefield State would add another run and would take a 6-4 lead into the seventh inning, but Edward Waters would add another three runs, including a Torry Jones inside-the-park-home-run, to take a lead for the first time before that grand slam. However, Bluefield State would score the next five and would advance to the final.

The Black College World Series is underway from Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, Alabama.

Six teams—three Division II teams and three NAIA squads—are vying to be called champion in this double-elimination tournament.

No. 1 seed Talladega College, No. 4 seed Wiley University and No. 6 seed Florida Memorial University represent NAIA. Florida Memorial won last year's tournament.

The Division II schools consist of No. 2 Bluefield State University, No. 3 seed Edward Waters University and No. 5 seed Miles College.

Day 1 was Wednesday. The tournament will continue on Thursday and Friday before concluding with the championship on Saturday.

Here's a look at Wednesday's scores, recaps and a look at Thursday's schedule too.

Wednesday Scores

Edward Waters University 8, Florida Memorial University 5

Wiley University 10, Miles College 0

Bluefield State University 9, Edward Waters University 7

Thursday Schedule (Times ET)

10 a.m.: Talladega College vs. Wiley University

1:30 p.m.: Miles College vs. Edward Waters University (loser eliminated from tournament)

5 p.m.: Florida Memorial University vs. Talladega/Wiley loser (loser of this game eliminated from tournament)

Edward Waters University 8, Florida Memorial University 5

Erickson Matos went 4-for-4 with three RBI and Caden Hutchinson scored four runs to lead Edward Waters to an 8-5 win over Florida Memorial.

The two teams entered the fifth tied at one before Edward Waters scored three in the fifth and two in the sixth for a 6-1 advantage.

Anthony Bayyat got the win for Edward Waters, allowing just one run through seven innings. He got into some trouble in the top of the eighth and couldn't finish that half, which ended with Edward Waters scoring four runs to cut the EWU lead to 6-5. Keith Harden's three-run homer, hit off reliever Carson Hurst, got Florida Memorial close.

However, EWU got some breathing room in the eighth, with the capper being a Matos RBI single.

Wiley University 10, Miles College 0

Wiley cruised to a 10-0 mercy rule win over Miles that ended after six-and-a-half innings.

Jaylen Cream threw seven shutout frames, striking out three while allowing just four hits and two walks. Abel Rodriguez Jr., Amir Mason and Ajari Camp had two hits apiece for Wiley, who had 11 overall on the day in addition to six walks.

Wiley did nearly all of its damage over the third and fourth innings, scoring eight total runs during that span. In the third inning, Mason's RBI single later led to Jhan Carlos Javier's two-RBI double for three runs. In the fourth inning, Jacob Perez's two-RBI single kickstarted a five-run frame.

Wiley only had three extra base hits (all doubles), but small ball worked to perfection on this day en route to the dominant win.

Bluefield State University 9, Edward Waters University 7

Bluefield State jumped out to an 8-0 lead after six innings but held on for dear life late en route to the 9-7 win.

Chris Larkin led the Bluefield State bats by going 3-for-5 with a home run. Peyton Lewis went 3-for-4 with three RBI, and outfielder Noah Moritz added two RBI.

Bluefield State's big inning was the fourth, when the team scored four to take a 5-0 lead and knock starting pitcher Elvin Polanco out of the game. Lewis had a two-RBI single in this frame. Larkin hit a solo shot in the fifth for a 6-0 lead. Bluefield State scored one more in the fifth and one more in the sixth, and a mercy rule win was on the table.

Edward Waters had other plans, scoring three in the seventh (each run on an RBI single). Moritz got one back for Bluefield State with an RBI groundout, but Edward Waters staged a great ninth-inning rally with four runs capped by Hugo Schoening's two-RBI single.

That brought the tying run to the plate with two outs, but a fielder's choice ended the game.

Dave Mitchum paced Edward Waters at the top of the order with three hits.

The Georgia baseball team scored the winning run in the ninth inning of Saturday's 3-2 victory over Mississippi State, but much of the drama came before that in the eighth inning.

As Benjamin Rosenberg of The Dispatch relayed, the benches cleared in the top of the eighth inning when Georgia pinch-runner Dillon Carter was thrown out at home trying to score from first base.

Mississippi State catcher Johnny Long stood over Carter and exchanged words with him after tagging him out, which prompted the benches to clear. In all, there were 11 ejections, and Mississippi State had just two starters in the lineup for all nine innings because of it.

That will be an even bigger issue in Sunday's rubber match, as everyone ejected is also suspended for the next game.

"Not one of those kids who got kicked out was aggressive," Mississippi State head coach Chris Lemonis said. "Nobody started a fight. They were on the field. They were coming off the field to congratulate their teammate, and my entire lineup gets taken out? That's what we're teaching kids? Somebody who interpreted the rule, that's interpreted the wrong way."

Georgia took advantage in the final frame of Saturday's matchup, as Clayton Chadwick launched the go-ahead solo home run before Brian Zeldin shut down the remainder of Mississippi State's lineup with three strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth to clinch the win.

The two SEC teams finish the series Sunday at 2 p.m. ET.

East Carolina University sophomore Parker Byrd became the first baseball player in NCAA Division I history to play in a game with a prosthetic leg on Friday evening.

Byrd served as a pinch-hitter during the eighth inning of the Pirates' 16-2 season-opening win over Rider University at home in Greenville, North Carolina. He drew a walk before leaving the game for pinch-runner Jason Janesko, who later scored in the five-run frame.

Byrd nearly died in a boating accident that took place on July 23, 2022. He lost his right leg and endured 22 surgeries, per Manny Randhawa of MLB.com.

He missed all of the 2023 season but remarkably returned to the active roster in 2024. His appearance Friday marked his first-ever collegiate action.

"I mean chill bumps man," Byrd said postgame about the moment, per Eric Gullickson of WITN.

"This crowd, these people, my family, my teammates, coaches I really could not be more thankful and blessed."

As Byrd noted, he got a quality at-bat in, drawing a walk that eventually led to a run as ECU poured it on late.

This isn't an isolated moment, per ECU head coach Cliff Godwin, who said Byrd will see more action.

"It is one of the proudest moments I have ever had as a coach," Godwin said, per Gullickson.

"And he's going to get some more. He has worked his tail off it was super emotional. The umpire behind home plate told me later when I was making a change he has been an umpire for 17-18 years and it is the coolest moment he has ever been a part of."

It assuredly was a tremendous evening in Greenville for Byrd, his family, his coaches, teammates and the 5,000-plus fans watching.

Former Florida State baseball coach Mike Martin died Thursday at the age of 79.

"Mike Martin showed all of us that you can be an amazing father, grandfather, husband and friend while also being a world-class baseball coach," Seminoles coach Link Jarrett said.

"Today, the world lost more than the winningest coach in college sports history, we lost a legendary human being that was a role model to all that he encountered."

According to ESPN's Andrea Adelson, Martin was diagnosed with Lewy body dementia three years ago. That was after he had retired from coaching at the end of the 2019 season.

The program legend walked away with 2,029 wins, the most ever by a coach in any college sport. Under his watch, the Seminoles became a powerhouse in the Metro Conference before moving to the ACC in 1992. They won 19 combined conference titles and reached the College World Series on 17 occasions.

An NCAA title remained out of reach for Martin, though. Florida State advanced to Omaha, Nebraska, in his final season but was eliminated in the second round of the CWS.

In a 2019 interview with Adelson, Martin said the absence of a national championship wasn't something he dwelled on.

"If I ever said [I had bad luck] to myself, there might be a lot of voices saying, 'You have a nice house. You have the most unbelievable wife a man could ask for. You have three healthy children. You have just about anything a man needs, and you're griping about never winning a national championship?'" he said.

"How about the number of young men that came up to me at that celebration and hugged my neck and said, 'I love you, 11?' That's a lot more important. That's what I get out of coaching. Do I want to win it? Dadgum right. I wouldn't work so dadgum hard. But I'm not going to say woe is me."
