Tigers' Riley Greene to Undergo Exploratory Surgery on Elbow Injury; Timeline Unknown

Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene will have surgery to address right elbow inflammation on Wednesday, according to Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic.

Per Stavenhagen, the extent of Greene's injury is unclear and it "sounds like doctors have to go in to determine the extent of the injury."

Greene, 22, has been excellent in his second MLB season when healthy, hitting .288 with 11 homers, 37 RBI, 51 runs, seven stolen bases and a .796 OPS in 99 games. He's certainly looked the part of a player worth the No. 5 overall pick in the 2019 MLB draft.

In Greene, Spencer Torkelson and Kerry Carpenter, the Tigers have a trio of young hitters worth being excited about. That has somewhat lessened the sting from Javier Báez's incredibly disappointing 2023 campaign (.217 with nine homers, 58 RBI, 56 runs, 12 stolen bases and a .583 OPS) after he signed a six-year, $140 million deal this offseason.

As for Greene, he's been out since Sept. 2 with an inflamed right elbow and his season seems likely to be over.

Injuries are becoming a concern in his young career. He also dealt with a stress reaction in his left fibula earlier in the season, causing him to miss additional time, and saw his MLB debut delayed in 2022 after suffering a fractured foot during Spring Training when he fouled a pitch off his foot.

"It [stinks]," he told reporters last week regarding his latest injury. "There's no one that wants to be out there more than me."

He appeared to suffer the knock while diving for a Tim Anderson fly ball. One of Greene's calling cards during his young MLB career has been an aggressive approach to fielding his position in the outfield.

"He did this on a play that not many people make," Tigers manager A.J. Hinch told reporters. "It's another unfortunate incident. He's not going to stop being Riley Greene and playing the way that he does, the caliber that he does. But it's tough on him, it's tough on us when something like this happens."

The team's for the 2024 MLB Little League Classic are officially set.

Major League Baseball announced that the New York Yankees and Detroit Tigers would be the participants in the 2024 iteration of the event, which takes place at Bowman Field in Williamsport, Pennsylvania during the regular festivities of the Little League World Series.

The game will take place on August 18, 2024 and will be broadcast on Sunday Night Baseball. It will be the seventh iteration of the event, which dates back to the 2017 season.

The Yankees and the Tigers will follow the St. Louis Cardinals, Pittsburgh Pirates, Philadelphia Phillies, New York Mets, Chicago Cubs, Cleveland Guardians, Los Angeles Angels, Baltimore Orioles, Boston Red Sox and Washington Nationals as team's that have participated in the event.

The Pirates and Phillies will have participated two times each, while the other team's all made appearances in the game. The promotion sees the professional players interact with the little leaguers throughout the day before the focus shifts towards the MLB game that night. This is something the Phillies did Sunday before their matchup in Williamsport:

The 2023 MLB Little League Classic is scheduled for Sunday night and will see the Nationals host the Phillies at 7:00 P.M. ET.

MLB Rumors: Eduardo Rodríguez to Dodgers Trade Collapsed over Contract 'Enhancements'

Eduardo Rodríguez's decision to veto a trade to the Los Angeles Dodgers may have been a little more complicated than it was initially said to be.

Per The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, Rodríguez and his agent, Gene Mato, asked for "financial and contractual enhancements" before he would give the Detroit Tigers his approval to accept a deal to Los Angeles.

"When those enhancements were not granted," Rosenthal wrote, "he invoked his no-trade protection."

In a statement released on Wednesday night, Mato said Rodríguez's decision to remain with the Tigers was made because his family was comfortable in Detroit.

Tigers general manager Scott Harris confirmed on Tuesday the team had an agreement in place with the Dodgers on a trade for Rodríguez prior to the trade deadline, but the left-handed starter invoked his no-trade provision.

Rosenthal noted one of the enhancements proposed from Mato was adding an extra year and $20 million to Rodríguez's contract if he declined to opt out.

Rodríguez has had an unusual tenure with the Tigers since signing with the team as a free agent in November 2021. He was placed on the injured list with a rib injury in May 2022.

Around the time Rodríguez was set to be activated from the IL, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported he was moved to the restricted list because of a marital issue.

Then-general manager Al Avila told reporters in July that Rodríguez wasn't communicating with the club.

"We have reached out, but he hasn't reached out back," Avila said. "We're just kind of waiting it out."

Rodríguez eventually returned to the team in August and made nine starts to finish the 2022 season. The 30-year-old was absent from the start of spring training this year, though he did eventually show up and made one appearance for Venezuela in the World Baseball Classic.

One big detail in the five-year, $77 million deal Rodríguez signed with the Tigers was a limited no-trade clause that includes 10 teams he can veto deals to.

We saw other teams have to negotiate with players leading up to the trade deadline about no-trade clauses. The Texas Rangers were able to get Max Scherzer to opt in to his 2024 salary and waive his no-trade clause to accept a deal from the New York Mets.

Justin Verlander, who also had a full no-trade clause, was dealt by the Mets back to the Houston Astros where he spent the previous six seasons.

Rodríguez could have been an impactful addition for the Dodgers down the stretch. He has a 2.96 ERA with 96 strikeouts in 94.1 innings this season in Detroit.

The southpaw could become a free agent after this season if he exercises his opt-out clause. He will be owed $49 million over the next three seasons if he doesn't opt out.

Tigers' Eduardo Rodriguez Says Rejecting Trade Was 'Nothing Against the Dodgers'

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez, who recently used his no-trade clause to block a potential deal to the Los Angeles Dodgers, explained to reporters why he made that decision.

Jason Beck of MLB.com relayed some quotes after Rodriguez threw six innings of two-run ball in a 6-3 road win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday.

Mato Sports Management, which represents Rodriguez, also released a statement on the matter.

Rodriguez signed a five-year, $77 million contract with the Tigers before the 2022 season. He holds an opt-out after the 2023 campaign but can also make $49 million on the remainder of his deal should he choose to stay in Detroit after this year.

Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris made it clear that Rodriguez "shouldn't be the villain" for invoking his no-trade clause.

"We had steady communication throughout," Harris said, per Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic. "And at the end of the day, Eduardo wasn't comfortable with the deal as it was presented to him. That's his right. He's earned that right. … He shouldn't be the villain in any of this stuff. He earned that right with the performance he's had throughout his career, and we respect that right."

Ultimately, all sides moved on. Rodriguez remains a Tiger with a choice to make this offseason on whether to enter free agency or stay in Detroit. For now, he's excelled with the Tigers to the tune of a 7-5 record, a 2.96 ERA and 101 strikeouts this season.

Despite the Tigers sporting a 48-60 record, they still have a remote chance at making the playoffs by virtue of sitting seven games behind the AL Central-leading Minnesota Twins.

The Dodgers still were able to upgrade the pitching staff despite not landing Rodriguez, adding Lance Lynn and Joe Kelly from the Chicago White Sox and Ryan Yarbrough via the Kansas City Royals. They entered Wednesday sitting first in the NL West with a 60-45 record.

Report: Tigers' Eduardo Rodriguez Invoked No-Trade Clause, Nixed Dodgers Deal

A deal between the Los Angeles Dodgers and Detroit Tigers centered around left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez has reportedly been nixed.

The Dodgers had a deal in place to acquire Rodriguez from the Tigers ahead of MLB's trade deadline at 6 p.m. ET Tuesday, but the veteran pitcher invoked his 10-team no-trade clause to prevent a move to Los Angeles and the deal is now "dead," according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.

Rodriguez declined because he wants to remain closer to his family on the East Coast, according to The Athletic's Fabian Ardaya.

MLB Network's Jon Heyman reported Monday afternoon that Rodriguez and Justin Verlander were L.A.'s top targets leading up to the deadline. The Dodgers are now out of the race for both players with Verlander having reportedly been traded from the New York Mets to the Houston Astros.

The Dodgers are in hot pursuit of a pitcher heading into the final stretch of the season as they have several rotation members on the injured list, including Clayton Kershaw, Dustin May, Ryan Pepiot and Walker Buehler.

Additionally, L.A. (59-45) needs the pitching help to maintain its standing atop the National League West. The San Francisco Giants enter Tuesday just 2.5 games back of the top spot with a 58-49 record.

Rodriguez, who signed a five-year, $77 million deal with the Tigers as a free agent ahead of the 2022 campaign, can opt out of the remainder of his contract following the 2023 season to become a free agent.

The 30-year-old is in the midst of a career year, posting a 6-5 record with a 2.95 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 91 strikeouts in 88.1 innings across 15 starts. He would have been a solid addition to a rotation that also includes Julio Urías, Tony Gonsolin and Bobby Miller.

Although Rodriguez axed a deal to the Dodgers, he could still be moved ahead of the Monday, 6 p.m. ET trade deadline.

The San Diego Padres are also "said to be high on" the lefthander and could "make a push to land him," according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.

The Philadelphia Phillies have made their move as they look to solidify the rotation down the stretch.

The Phillies announced they acquired starting pitcher Michael Lorenzen from the Detroit Tigers in exchange for infielder prospect Hao-Yu Lee.

MLB Network's Jon Morosi first reported the news.

Lorenzen was named to his first All-Star Game this season and is 5-7 with a 3.58 ERA in 2023. He has 105.2 innings pitched in 2023 and should easily surpass his career high of 113.1 innings he set during his rookie season in 2015.

Lee was the Phillies' No. 5 prospect and is projected to be MLB-ready in 2025. The 20-year-old is currently playing at the High A level.

Lorenzen is set to join a Phillies rotation that has the 11th-best ERA in MLB. He looks to slot into the No. 4 slot in the rotation behind starters Aaron Nola, Zach Wheeler and Taijuan Walker.

He also has spent years in MLB as a reliever, so he could serve that role if needed as the team prepares for another postseason run given how much success Cristopher Sanchez has experienced.

The Phillies sit at 57-49 in 2023 and are in second place in the NL East, trailing the Atlanta Braves by 11 games for the division lead. They hold the second Wild Card position at the moment, with a half game lead on the spot.

The Tigers are in third place in the AL Central at 47-59 and appear likely to miss the postseason for the ninth consecutive season. Four of the team's top five prospects are projected to reach the majors in either 2024 or 2025, so Lee can potentially factor into that future core.

MLB Rumors: Tigers' Eduardo Rodriguez Pursued by Dodgers, Padres at Trade Deadline

Detroit Tigers pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez remains a popular name on the trade market, and two NL West rivals appear to be in hot pursuit of the veteran.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have made Rodriguez one of their top targets ahead of the Aug. 1 trade deadline, according to MLB Network's Jon Heyman. The San Diego Padres are also "said to be high on" the lefthander and could "make a push to land him," according to MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.

Rodriguez signed a five-year, $77 million deal with the Tigers as a free agent ahead of the 2022 campaign after spending the first six years of his career with the Boston Red Sox. However, he can opt out of the remainder of his deal after the 2023 season to become a free agent.

The 30-year-old's stock has seemingly skyrocketed this season as he's in the midst of a career year. He's gone 6-5 with a 2.95 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 91 strikeouts in 88.1 innings across 15 starts.

MLB Network's Jon Heyman suggested in May that the Tigers could "get a big, big haul" for Rodriguez if they opt to move him this summer. However, it's unclear what the Dodgers or Padres would be willing to give up for his services.

The Dodgers are in desperate need of some pitching depth with Clayton Kershaw, Dustin May, Ryan Pepiot and Walker Buehler on the injured list, and they'll need another arm to maintain their standing in the NL West.

L.A. sits first in the division with a 59-45 record, but the San Francisco Giants are just 2.5 games back of the top spot.

The Padres, meanwhile, have been one of the most disappointing teams in baseball this season and currently sit five games out of an NL wild card spot with a 52-55 record.

While Blake Snell and Josh Hader have been linked in trades out of San Diego this summer, it appears the Friars may be buyers instead of sellers given their interest in Rodriguez, who would be a strong addition to a rotation that also includes Yu Darvish, Joe Musgrove and Seth Lugo.

With the Tigers sitting 11.5 games out of an AL wild card spot, it's reasonable to believe they'll be sellers, and it's going to be interesting to see if they opt to move on from Rodriguez, who was supposed to be an important piece of their rebuild.

MLB Trade Rumors: Astros, Rays Targeting All-Star SP Michael Lorenzen Before Deadline

The Houston Astros and Tampa Bay Rays are reportedly among the teams interested in Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Michael Lorenzen, per Jon Morosi of MLB Network.

The 31-year-old has gone 4-6 with a 3.49 ERA and 76 strikeouts in 100.2 innings over 16 starts. He served as the Tigers' representative in the All-Star Game this year.

The right-hander has caught fire in his last three starts, hurling 18.2 shutout innings during that span. He just shut out the Kansas City Royals for seven innings Thursday en route to a 3-0 victory.

Lorenzen played his first seven seasons with the Cincinnati Reds before joining the Los Angeles Angels last year. He then signed as a free agent with the Tigers last December.

He was a starter for his first season before moving into a relief role from 2016-2021. Lorenzen became a starter again for the Angels, going 8-6 with a 4.24 ERA (1.28 WHIP) and 85 strikeouts in 93.2 innings (18 starts).

Now he's excelling for the Tigers, who aren't out of the AL Central race despite sporting a 44-52 record. They sit just five games behind the Minnesota Twins in the standings and could very well make a run at the division given the fact that no one is running away with it.

But there's clear interest in the impending free agent Lorenzen, who signed a one-year, $8.5 million contract this past offseason.

We'll see if the Tigers shoot for the playoffs or become sellers prior to the Aug. 1 trade deadline soon enough. For now, Lorenzen remains with Detroit, which has gone 5-2 since the All-Star break.

Matt Manning, Tigers' Combined No-Hitter vs. Blue Jays Has Twitter Hyped

It was a momentous afternoon at Comerica Park in Detroit on Saturday as the Detroit Tigers had their first combined no-hitter in franchise history against the Toronto Blue Jays in a 2-0 win.

Matt Manning, Jason Foley and Alex Lange were the protagonists of the matchup as they made history in what has been a mostly uneventful campaign in the Motor City.

In just his third start since being activated off the injured list, Manning—25—did the heavy lifting for most of the afternoon and was absolutely dominant, going 6 2/3 innings on 91 pitches with five strikeouts and three walks.

Although manager A.J. Hinch got booed when he took the young stud out of the game for Foley, it didn't derail any of the momentum as he and Lange wrapped things up nicely over the final few frames.

Neither reliever surrendered a walk during their time on the mound.

Saturday was the ninth no-hitter in Tigers' history and the first since the 2021 season when Spencer Turnbull accomplished the feat. Before that, Justin Verlander had two such games during his time with the organization.

Twitter was in shock by the performance but had plenty of praise for the Tigers shutting down a talented Blue Jays' offense.

https://twitter.com/cmmcguire/status/1677783212402044932

Saturday was the highlight of a Tigers' season that has been mostly disappointing, despite having some young talent on the roster. They currently sit at 39-49 and are five games back of the Minnesota Twins.

Hopefully, the unexpected no-hitter can be the type of landmark moment that helps the squad build some momentum going into the second half of the year.

The Chicago White Sox secured one of the strangest walk-off wins of the year Saturday afternoon following a scary moment in which umpire Cory Blaser was hit by a wild pitch that allowed Yoán Moncada to cross home plate.

Blaser, an umpire since 2010, was knocked to the ground by a wild pitch from Detroit's José Cisnero that hit him right in the face mask, leading to Chicago's 2-1 win at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Blaser remains under evaluation following the incident, according to MLB.

It's one of the more memorable finishes to a game in some time, especially considering that all three of the game's runs were scored on wild pitches. It was the first game of its kind, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Saturday was also the first time since 1990 that the White Sox won without having an RBI.

Tim Anderson was at the plate when Cisnero threw the wild pitch. The White Sox had the bases loaded in the 10th inning with Moncada as the automatic runner, Gavin Sheets being walked intentionally and Jake Burger getting hit by a pitch, which was a precursor to the game's ending.

Cisnero was nearly out of the jam with two outs but just couldn't finish it off.

Regardless of how it happened, the White Sox will take the result as they have finally found a decent run of form after a rough start to the season. They have now won three out of their last four games.

Chicago still sits at 25-35, fourth place in the AL Central, but have closed the gap between themselves and the Tigers—who are in second-place—to just three games.
