Tuomas Iisalo Named Grizzlies' Full-Time HC After Replacing Taylor Jenkins Midseason

Timothy Rapp
May 2, 2025
Oklahoma City Thunder v Memphis Grizzlies - Game Three

The Memphis Grizzlies have their new head coach.

They announced Friday that interim coach Tuomas Iisalo is being installed as the full-time head coach after he replaced Taylor Jenkins, whom they fired in late March.

"I have full confidence in Tuomas serving as head coach of the Grizzlies going forward," team president and general manager Zach Kleiman said in a statement. "Tuomas' teams at every level have been disciplined, tenacious and connected on both ends of the floor, consistently exceeding expectations. We look forward to the same in Memphis."

Under Iisalo, the Grizzlies went 4-5 to close the regular season before being swept by the top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs. Ja Morant's series-ending hip contusion in Game 3 didn't help the team's cause.

Overall, the Grizzlies finished the regular season 48-34, reaching the playoffs for the fourth time in the past five years.

Memphis has a solid core group in Morant, Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr., though the trio hasn't quite been able to get over the hump. Some roster tweaking could be in order this offseason, but Morant gave Iisalo a vote of confidence heading into the summer:

The timing of Jenkins' firing—after establishing himself the winningest coach in franchise history—was quite surprising, though Memphis' front office may have always had an Iisalo succession plan in place. As The Athletic's William Guillory noted in early April, the organization "paid a lucrative buyout to lure Iisalo from Paris Basketball of LNB Élite" and also "forced Jenkins to fire several assistants he worked with for years ahead of the 2024-25 season to make room for Iisalo and several others tasked with reshaping the Grizzlies’ offensive attack."

The Grizzlies had also lost eight of 11 games at the time of Jenkins' firing.

Now, Iisalo will have to prove that the immense faith the franchise has put in him—from his expensive hiring as an assistant to his interim tag and now the full-time position as head coach—was justified.

Ja Morant Reportedly Out for Grizzlies vs. Thunder Game 4 with Hip Injury

Memphis Grizzlies v Charlotte Hornets

Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant will reportedly miss Saturday's Game 4 against the Oklahoma City Thunder because of a hip injury, according to ESPN's Shams Charania.

The two-time All-Star exited Memphis' 114-108 Game 3 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder following a scary fall in the second quarter. He went up for a dunk when contact by the Thunder's Luguentz Dort caused him to land hard on the court.

The Grizzlies said Morant suffered a hip injury, and he was using crutches and in street clothes when he returned from the locker room.

The impact of his absence was evident as Memphis squandered a 29-point lead, mustering just 31 points in the second half.

Most fans wrote off the Grizzlies after they dropped Game 1 by 51. Even at full strength, they're simply not good enough to match up with the top-seeded Thunder. Between falling into an 0-3 hole and the injury to Morant, this series could be headed for a quick sweep.

Looking beyond the playoffs, Morant's durability is an even bigger concern for the organization.

As much as his Game 3 fall was a freak accident, the 25-year-old hasn't logged 70-plus appearances in a single season, and this was the third straight postseason in which he was hurt.

Ad Placeholder

Morant is electric when he's healthy. He averaged 23.2 points and 7.3 assists in 2024-25. But the injuries have been too voluminous to chalk up only to coincidence or bad luck.

The shocking ouster of head coach Taylor Jenkins was partially about the Grizzlies reaffirming their commitment to their cornerstone talent. They have to hope Morant won't continue to be as snakebitten as he has throughout his NBA career.

Ja Morant Uncertain for Grizzlies vs. Thunder Game 4 After Hip Injury from Hard Fall

Oklahoma City Thunder v Memphis Grizzlies

Memphis Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant is uncertain for Saturday's potential elimination game against the Oklahoma City Thunder after being ruled out for the remainder of Thursday's game with a hip injury.

ESPN's Tim MacMahon reported Morant "was spotted on crutches in the tunnel by Memphis' bench during the fourth quarter."

"He's going through further evaluations tomorrow," said Grizzlies interim coach Tuomas Iisalo, per MacMahon.

Morant suffered the injury in the second quarter after being undercut by Thunder guard Lu Dort and taking a hard fall in the paint.

Morant has dealt with injuries on-and-off during the season. Right hip soreness in November kept him out for eight straight games. An AC joint sprain sidelined Morant for five consecutive contests in late December and early January.

Lingering right shoulder soreness has permeated since, notably costing him two straight games in early March. He returned on March 5 in a 120-103 road loss to the Thunder but admitted postgame that he shouldn't have played.

Morant notably suffered a season-ending subluxation during a January 2024 practice, forcing him to miss the remainder of the 2023-24 season.

So he's been dealing with a host of physical ailments but has still remained productive, averaging 23.2 points, 7.3 assists and 4.1 rebounds this year for the Grizzlies.

Without Morant, the Grizzlies have turned to Luke Kennard to fill the void in the backcourt. The onus falls more on Desmond Bane and Jaren Jackson Jr. to assume more usage in Morant's absence as well.

If Morant misses any time moving forward, the Grizzlies could be in trouble in their first-round series against Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and the Thunder, which entered Game 3 with a 2-0 series lead.

Grizzlies' Ja Morant Talks 'Difficult' Ankle Injury After NBA Play-In Win vs. Mavs

2025 SoFi Play-In Tournament - Dallas Mavericks v Memphis Grizzlies

Ja Morant was able to smile through the pain of a sprained ankle after the Memphis Grizzlies earned the No. 8 seed in the Western Conference playoffs with a 120-106 win over the Dallas Mavericks in the play-in tournament on Friday night.

Speaking to reporters after the victory, Morant called this ankle injury "more difficult" than others due to the high-pressure nature of playing in a win-or-go-home game two days after it occured:

"Obviously, regular-season games, it's not win or go home. So, this one was way more difficult—the whole process, like, learning what I would have to do to be able to get out there. I was kind of questioning it, but with our staff, the doctors, they gave me all the info I needed and [in the] simplest terms so I will understand. From that point, it was pretty much easy. I wanted to be on the floor. I wanted to play this game and get the win."

Morant rolled his ankle late in the third quarter when he landed on Buddy Hield's foot coming down on a shot attempt in Memphis' loss to the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday night. He was able to return in the fourth quarter, but his status going forward was uncertain.

The Grizzlies held Morant out of Thursday's practice and officially listed him as a game-time decision against the Mavs. He was able to suit up for tipoff, though it remained to be seen how effective he would be.

It wasn't Morant's best game, as he shot just 7-of-24 from the field. The two-time All-Star was able to play 33 minutes, dishing out nine assists, grabbing seven rebounds and recording three steals.

Morant, who received a pain-killing injection for the injury, said after the game he would leave any decisions about more injections going forward to the medical staff.

"That's a question for somebody else. I'm going to be out there regardless," Morant said.

There's not much time for Morant to rest his ankle before getting back on the court. The Grizzlies will play Game 1 of their first-round series against the Oklahoma City Thunder at Paycom Center on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.

2025 SoFi Play-In Tournament - Memphis Grizzlies v Golden State Warriors

The Memphis Grizzlies lost their first play-in tournament game against the Golden State Warriors 121-116 on Wednesday as star Ja Morant played through an apparent injury in the second half.

Morant appeared to roll his ankle halfway through the third quarter and had to spend several minutes on the bench being tended to by medical staff. The Grizzlies managed to stay afloat without their star on the court for much of the fourth quarter, setting up a down-to-the-wire finish once Morant returned.

Memphis had plenty of chances to overcome the three-point deficit they faced heading into the final minute, but ultimately didn't have enough to come away with the win.

While Memphis still has another chance to punch a ticket to the postseason, fans were disappointed after the Grizzlies fell short in the clutch.

Morant finished with 22 points and Desmond Bane dropped 30, but it wasn't enough on a night when Curry put up 36 and Jimmy Butler added 38.

With the loss, the Grizzlies will now play a win-or-go-home game against the winner of the Sacramento Kings vs. the Dallas Mavericks, who will square off on Thursday night.

Memphis has all the makings of a playoff team, and it will look to secure the final playoff spot in the West on Friday.

NBA Exec Questions If Ja Morant Can Be Best Player in Any 2025 Playoff Series

Minnesota Timberwolves v Memphis Grizzlies

One Eastern Conference executive wonders if Memphis Grizzlies point guard Ja Morant can be the best player in an NBA playoff series this year, save for maybe a potential first-round matchup with the Houston Rockets.

"I'm not sure they have the internal fortitude to overcome what's been thrown at them," the executive said, per ESPN's Tim Bontemps and Brian Windhorst. "They're betting on Ja to be the guy from 2.5 years ago. Everyone is waiting for him to come back, but he hasn't yet."

"At this point," the West executive said, "I don't know if there's a series where Ja will be the best player. Maybe against Houston."

Ad Placeholder

To the executive's point, it is possible that Morant won't be considered the top player in any potential series that Memphis may encounter.

For example, in a date with the Oklahoma City Thunder, it would be presumptive NBA MVP Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

If the Grizzlies play the Los Angeles Lakers, Morant would probably rank third behind LeBron James and Luka Dončić.

A matchup with the Denver Nuggets would be against Nikola Jokić, who's the best basketball player in the world right now.

Ad Placeholder

That being said, Morant is good enough where he can be the best player on the court over a series, and he's on fire right now. Over his last 11 games, Morant has averaged 31.1 points, 7.1 assists and 4.5 rebounds per contest.

He's a sensational, productive and electrifying talent at his best. But right now, he and the Grizzlies just need to focus on making the playoffs. Right now, they're in a three-way tie for sixth at 47-33 with two games to go. Falling out of the top six means having to fight their way in via the play-in tournament.

All games are massive now, especially the one Friday, which sees Memphis visit Denver at 9 p.m. ET.

Grizzlies' Jaylen Wells Set to Miss Rest of NBA Season After Injuries from Fall

Jack Murray

Memphis Grizzlies v Charlotte Hornets

Jaylen Wells' season has likely come to a close.

The Memphis Grizzlies confirmed Friday that Wells suffered a broken right wrist, concussion and facial laceration. The team noted Wells will make a full recovery but will "likely" miss the remainder of the season.

Wells suffered the injuries on Tuesday when he was fouled on a dunk attempt by KJ Simpson. Simpson received a flagrant foul on the play.

Wells is in his rookie season after being selected in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft. He's started 74 of 79 games, averaging 10.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 25.9 minutes.

Ad Placeholder

Wells has been one of the better stories for Memphis this season and losing him will provide a blow to the team's chances in the postseason. The Grizzlies are currently 47-33 and in seventh in the Western Conference. They are tied with the Golden State Warriors and the Minnesota Timberwolves for sixth place, so a strong end to the year could help the team avoid the play-in tournament.

The team will have to approach the final two games of the season and the playoffs without Wells and the rookie will look to get fully healthy ahead of his second season.

Ja Morant Urges Grizzlies to 'Play Some F--king Defense' After Loss to T-Wolves

Minnesota Timberwolves v Memphis Grizzlies

As the Memphis Grizzlies have dropped to seventh in the Western Conference standings with two games remaining in the regular season, Ja Morant wants to see his team's defensive intensity increase.

Speaking to reporters after Thursday's 141-125 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves, Morant said the message to the Grizzlies going forward is "play some f--king defense and go get a win."

Some of the defensive issues can be attributed to Morant, who has never been particularly strong on that end of the court. The Timberwolves were well aware of that and frequently hunted the matchup with him guarding Anthony Edwards.

Ad Placeholder

Edwards was unstoppable no matter who was in front of him. He dropped 44 points on 13-of-19 shooting (7-of-11 from three) in 38 minutes.

Minnesota's third-quarter barrage was the difference in the game. The T-Wolves dropped 52 points, their most in a single quarter in franchise history.

The 141 points were the third-most the Grizzlies have allowed in a game this season. It was also the eighth loss in their last 13 games, dropping them from a tie for second in the West as recently as March 12 to fighting to avoid the play-in tournament.

Ad Placeholder

Memphis' pace of play does leave the defense vulnerable to giving up a lot of points. The Grizzlies rank 25th in points allowed per game this season, but a respectable 11th in defensive rating.

Thursday marked the fourth time in their last eight games the Grizzlies have allowed at least 125 points.

Ad Placeholder

Two of the teams they held under 125 points were the Miami Heat and Charlotte Hornets, who both rank in the bottom 10 in points per game and offensive rating. The other two were the Boston Celtics without Jaylen Brown and Detroit Pistons in Cade Cunningham's return from a two-week absence due to a calf injury.

Morant and the Grizzlies will look to close the regular season strong to avoid the play-in tournament with games against the Denver Nuggets on Friday and Dallas Mavericks on Sunday.

Ja Morant Says He'll Do Grenade Celebration Until Somebody 'Has a Problem With It'

Adam Wells
Apr 11, 2025
Golden State Warriors v Memphis Grizzlies

Memphis Grizzlies star Ja Morant has no intention of abandoning his new grenade celebration until he's told not to.

Speaking to reporters before Thursday's game against the Minnesota Timberwolves, the 25-year-old explained he will keep mimicking throwing a grenade until somebody "has a problem with it."

"That's my celebration now until somebody else has a problem with it, and I'll find another one," Morant said.

His previous on-court celebration using finger guns caught the attention of the NBA. He received a $75,000 fine from the league last week for what was deemed an "inappropriate" gesture for which had been warned about before.

Ad Placeholder

To avoid being fined again for finger guns, Morant decided to debut a new celebration during Tuesday's win over the Charlotte Hornets. After making a three, he mimed pulling out a grenade pin and throwing it into the stands while covering his ears for the mock explosion.

Morant brought back the celebration on Thursday night when he made a three-pointer. The two-time All-Star went 5-of-13 from behind the arc in the Grizzlies' 141-125 loss to Minnesota.

Ad Placeholder

Morant was suspended on two different occasions by the league in 2023 after being seen in social media posts brandishing a gun, including a 25-game ban to begin the 2023-24 season.

Thursday's loss dropped the Grizzlies to seventh in the Western Conference standings. Their final two games of the regular season are against the Denver Nuggets on Friday and Dallas Mavericks on Sunday.
