Boston Breakers Competing in WPS All-Star Game, European Championships

Aug 29, 2009

While the 2009 season may be over for the Boston Breakers, there are still four players lacing up their cleats these days.

Captain/midfielder Kristine Lilly and defender Amy LePeilbet are each starters for Sunday’s WPS All-Star Game presented by the Coast Guard at the Anheuser-Busch SoccerPark in Fenton, Mo. (5:30 p.m. ET Fox Soccer Channel/Comcast SportsNet New England).

LePeilbet was the league’s top vote getter among both players and coaches, and she is a candidate for the league’s Defender of the Year award, which will be announced on Saturday.

Lilly, the world’s all-time most-capped player (male or female) with 342 international appearances, was one of just five players in WPS to play every minute of every match (1800 minutes/20 matches) this season. She led the Breakers in assists (three) was second on the team in goals scored (three).

While Lilly and LePeilbet are playing in the Midwest, the Breakers’ English duo of Kelly Smith and Alex Scott are competing in Finland at the UEFA Women’s Euro 2009 tournament. Smith led the Breakers with six goals scored and was named the first WPS Player of the Month back in April.

Scott became arguably the top right back in the league this season and proved to be a threat both in attack and defense.

Wednesday in the duo’s first match of the competition, England fell to Italy, 2-1. Scott started and played the full 90 minutes, while Smith came on at halftime.

England grabbed the lead despite going down to ten players in the 28th minute when defender Casey Stone was shown a red card. Just ten minutes later, Chicago Red Stars midfielder Karen Carney drew a foul in the penalty area, and captain Faye White converted the penalty kick.

Goals in the 56th and 82nd minutes gave Italy the win, however, despite a number of quality chances from England to regain the lead.

England has two more matches to play in Group C action and will take on Russia tomorrow, followed by Sweden on Monday. The top two teams from each of the three groups, along with the two best third-place teams advance to the Quarterfinals (Sept. 3-4).

WPS Championship MVP Awarded to Heather O’Reilly

Scoring the game’s only goal in the 16th minute and making a key defensive play in the 51st minute against Los Angeles Sol’s Aya Miyama were the two biggest plays that highlighted an excellent day on the pitch for Sky Blue FC midfielder Heather O’Reilly. Based on her performance, she was selected as WPS Championship MVP by the media in attendance at The Home Depot Center for Saturday’s game.

“I’m so proud of this group, but I think that we’d all agree that the MVP of this group is Christie Rampone,” said O’Reilly upon receiving the award. “What she’s done for this group has been unbelievable. For her to take up the role of coach, captain amongst all the other roles that she has in life is pretty incredible, so we owe a lot to you—so thank you, Christie. We’re just so proud of this group.”

Colleges Celebrate WPS Champions

Colleges keep close tabs on their former players. Some of the top women’s collegiate soccer programs in the country celebrated their alumni who became WPS champions with news and notes this week.

Notre Dame had eight players in the WPS Playoffs including WPS Champions Kerri Hanks and Jen Buczkowski. The University of North Carolina featured four Tar Heel graduates on Sky Blue FC, while the University of Connecticut (Meghan Schnur) and University of Tennessee (Keeley Dowling) celebrated their player’s success with stories online and photos in their media guides.

WPS Weekly August 11, 2009: It's What's Happening In The WPS

Aug 13, 2009

In a down-to-the-wire finish to the 2009 WPS Regular Season, the Washington Freedom and Sky Blue FC earned the final two playoff berths in Women’s Professional Soccer in WPS Week 20.

With a 3-1 victory by the Washington Freedom over Sky Blue FC on Saturday evening, the Freedom clinched third place in the WPS Standings and will again host Sky Blue FC in a rematch at the Maryland SoccerPlex on Saturday, August 15.

On Sunday afternoon, Sky Blue FC clinched the fourth and final spot in the WPS Playoffs when the Boston Breakers lost at home in a nail-biter to the Los Angeles Sol, 2-1. With the score tied 1-1 and Boston pushing everyone up late in the game for a score—and a potential playoff berth—the Sol sealed Boston’s fate when Shannon Boxx converted a stoppage-time PK.

The loss eliminated any playoff hopes for the Breakers, who needed a victory over the Sol to edge Sky Blue FC for the fourth playoff spot.

Two teams, Saint Louis Athletica and Los Angeles Sol, already secured their playoff destiny prior to Week 20. The Athletica host the winner of the First Round between Washington and Sky Blue FC in the Super Semifinal on Wednesday, August 19.

As regular season champions, the Los Angeles Sol await the winner of the Super Semifinal in the WPS Championship presented by MedImmune on August 22 at The Home Depot Center in Carson, CA.

Washington Freedom 3, Sky Blue FC 1
Washington’s Abby Wambach continued her hot streak of late with two goals and an assist to lead the Freedom over Sky Blue FC and clinch third place in the WPS Standings. The loss forced Sky Blue FC to wait another day for their playoff fate, before Boston lost at home, thereby allowing Sky Blue FC to continue their season for at least another week into the WPS First Round.

Los Angeles Sol 2, Boston Breakers 1
Los Angeles scored twice in the second half for their first comeback victory of the season and the team’s first victory in four games since July 5th. Boston earned just one point in their final four games of the season to fall out of playoff contention and finish fifth in the final 2009 WPS Standings. Los Angeles awaits the winner of the Super Semifinal in the WPS Championship.

FC Gold Pride 1, Saint Louis Athletica 1
In a game with no bearing on the playoffs, FC Gold Pride earned a tie against second-place Athletica and could have won the game were it not for several spectacular saves by WPS All-Star selection Hope Solo in goal. Following a four-game losing streak, FC Gold Pride finished with six points in its final five games including draws against the league’s top two teams and a victory over third-placed Washington.

Lineup Notables
Boston Breakers: The Breakers fell to the Sol for the first time this season and ultimately out of playoff contention on Sunday. Boston took an early lead in Sunday’s match on a breakaway goal from Kelly Smith – a player who had not scored since May 31.

Chicago Red Stars: The Chicago Red Stars finished their season with a loss at their Midwest rival’s home turf last Wednesday. Goalkeeper Caroline Jönsson ended the regular season with every minute played for her team, a total of 1800 minutes, the only goalkeeper to do so in the league.

FC Gold Pride: In the Pride’s final match of the season, center back Rachel Buehler found herself dribbling with some open space outside the box. Buehler fired a shot past Athletica ‘keeper Hope Solo to tally her first goal this season and lift FC Gold to a 1-1 tie Sunday.

Los Angeles Sol: The Sol arose out of an end of the season slump, to win their first match in four games. Marta increased her goal total to ten, the best number in the league, on Sunday against the Breakers. In addition, Marta brought Boston’s season to a close when she drew a foul in the box at the end of the match, resulting in a converted penalty kick from teammate Shannon Boxx. Camille Abily sat out the first half, as the Sol were preparing for her absence in the WPS Championship presented by MedImmune.

Saint Louis Athletica:
Hope Solo connected with forward Christie Welsh on a long ball blasted down the entire length of the field. The play resulted in Hope Solo’s first-ever assist and the second consecutive match Christie Welsh has scored for the Athletica. Welsh scored her first two goals of the season just last Wednesday against the Chicago Red Stars. Eniola Aluko did not enter Sunday’s match until the 69th minute, as Saint Louis was preparing for Semifinal play without her.

Sky Blue FC: Brazilian international Rosana ended the regular season on a two-game scoring streak posting a goal in each match this week for Sky Blue FC. Team captain Christie Rampone served her first two matches as Player/Coach and saw her squad secure a fourth-place playoff position after Boston fell to the Sol on Sunday.

Washington Freedom: Abby Wambach continued her end-of-the-season hot streak on Saturday against Sky Blue FC netting two goals and posting one assist. Wambach ended the regular season with eight goals, tied with Camille Abily for the second-most in the league. Fellow forward, Lisa De Vanna also tallied a goal and assist in Saturday’s match. The 3-1 game secured the Freedom a third-place finish to host the first round of the playoffs.

Quotables From Notables
A few words from players and coaches:
“It was more busy than I would have liked,” said Athletica goalkeeper Hope Solo.  “But we are tweaking some things and getting ready for the playoffs. We let more chances come through than we usually do. When are defense doesn’t play its best its because of our mentality not our physical play.”

“I’m very excited,” said Head Coach Albertin Montoya of the future of FC Gold Pride. “I’m looking forward to next season because we have a special group here. When we put performances like we have till the end of the season, it makes my job very difficult when deciding what changes I need to make for next season. Obviously, we need to find a few players that will help us get over the hump, but I got to give credit to our team, they’ve come out and played hard in every game.”

“We’ll be taking a look [which players to bring back next year],” said Breakers Head Coach Tony DiCicco. “We have a good nucleus, but need to find some better players.  Certainly we are looking for an international striker, because we just didn’t score enough goals.”

“I can’t believe I have gone this long without scoring,” said Athletica forward Christie Welsh. “This has been one of the most difficult soccer seasons of my life. The stats, the minutes played, the trade. I believe that I can score goals. The ball that came to me could have easily gone somewhere else but it came to me. Walsh made a run in and the ball from her took a deflection and it came to my left foot and anything that comes to my left I hit straight.”

I think it's definitely a little different as a coach,” said Sky Blue FC defender Christie Rampone of her newfound role as Player/Coach. “You're thinking about some changes you’re going to make as well as playing my role and making sure everyone's playing with confidence and trying to decide what formation we might have to change into if things aren’t working out, but I think we weathered the storm in the first half (against FC Gold Pride on Wednesday).”

WPS Player of the Week: Week 20

Washington forward Abby Wambach has been selected WPS's Final Player of the Week for Week 20 after scoring two goals and assisting a third to lead the Freedom to a 3-1 victory Saturday over visiting Sky Blue FC in a showdown for a playoff berth.

Wambach, who scored goals in the 20th and 49th minutes and assisted Lisa De Vanna's in the 57th, is the first player to win the weekly honor three times. The U.S. national team star also was voted Player of the Week in Weeks 5 and 18.

The victory gave the Freedom (8-7-5) WPS’s third postseason spot and a home game in Saturday's WPS First Round.

Wambach is one of three Washington players selected Player of the Week this season. Midfielder Sonia Bompastor won in Week 6 and goalkeeper Erin McLeod was honored in Week 13.

Saturday, August 15:
WPS Playoffs – First Round
Washington Freedom vs. Sky Blue FC (4 pm ET – FSN)
Maryland SoccerPlex, Boyds, MD

These I-95 rivals played some riveting games this season, including the highest-scoring affair in WPS, when the Washington Freedom scored late in stoppage time to steal a 4-4 tie in mid-July. In three games this year, the Freedom outscored Sky Blue FC 9-6 going 2-0-1 against their East Coast rivals.

This WPS First Round will be a re-match of last week’s playoff clinching match-up at the Maryland SoccerPlex, when the Freedom rode two goals by Abby Wambach to a 3-1 victory and the right to host the first playoff game in WPS history.

The rematch was made possible when Boston lost to Los Angeles the next day, clinching a spot for Sky Blue FC. The Freedom are coming in hot, having won four of their last five games and were a solid 5-2-3 at home this year, the second-best home record in the league (some games played at RFK Stadium).

To have any chance at advancing to the Super Semifinal, Sky Blue FC will have to neutralize Washington’s potent offense like they did to other teams’ this season with stingy defense. The Freedom’s nine goals against Sky Blue FC accounted for almost half of the goals scored against the New Jersey side all regular season; indeed, the rest of the league notched only 11 goals against Sky Blue FC.

Goalkeeper Jenni Branam will need to come up with some big stops, while player-coach Christie Rampone and the defensive backline will need to put Wambach and speedy Lisa De Vanna on lockdown.

One huge X-factor for Washington will be the absence of French midfielder Sonia Bompastor, one of the most exciting players in WPS this season. Bompastor had a hand in one-third of the Freedom’s nine goals this year against Sky Blue FC with an assist or score. She is now with the French national team at the 2009 European Championships and the Freedom will look to Ali Krieger, who joined the team from FFC Frankfurt in midseason, or perhaps Allie Long to carry some of the pressure of that playmaking midfielder role.

On the Sky Blue FC’s offensive side, getting goal production from star forward Natasha Kai will be absolutely crucial. Sky Blue FC is an impressive 4-0-1 this season when Kai puts the ball in the back of the net, the only blemish being the 4-4 tie with Washington when Kai scored twice.

Unlike Washington, Sky Blue FC doesn’t have a variety of players who can score, with Rosana and Kacey White the only others who’ve shown consistent scoring ability. Winning on the road hasn’t come easy for Sky Blue FC – they are 2-6-2 this year – but nothing this season has come easy, as they have stared down adversity time and again, both on-and-off the field in 2009 to make the playoffs.

This game could come down to one fantastic play – a key save or a great score – and how the team that falls behind after the first goal in the history of the WPS Playoffs stares adversity in the face. Expect an exciting match down to the final minute.

On TV

First Round of the WPS Playoffs between the third-seeded Washington Freedom and fourth-seeded Sky Blue FC will air on Fox Sports Net on Saturday, August 15 at 4 pm ET/1pm PT. TV listings for First Round.

Los Angeles-Boston: Captain Shannon Steers Sol to Victory

Aug 9, 2009

The Los Angeles Sol can now claim the honor of being the first team in Women's Professional Soccer history to have beaten each of its opponents at least once.

Down 1-0 and the lack of form rearing its ugly head yet again, manager Abner Rogers went forward to bring in Camille Abily. Thanks to her presence, a Marta equalizer and a stoppage-time penalty by team captain Shannon Boxx was all the Sol needed to claim a 2-1 victory over the Boston Breakers at Harvard Stadium.

With the victory, Boston was eliminated from postseason contention and the final berth went to Sky Blue FC, who will travel to the Maryland SoccerPlex in the WPS First Round next Sunday.

Boston opened the proceedings early, as Kristine Lilly's long ball found Kelly Smith in the 16th minute to send one past Sol goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc.

However, Los Angeles-who were winless in the past three games-were not going to go down quietly into the cool Cambridge evening.

And they went to work in the second half.

In the 59th minute, Marta earned her tenth goal of the season. Breakers goalkeeper Kristine Luckenbill was too late off her line, and the Brazlian international sent one out of her reach.

Boston was showing signs of desperation, and with the crowd on the edge of their seats, the cheers turned to howls as a penalty was awarded to Los Angeles. A foul by Alex Scott on Marta took all the air out of Harvard Stadium.

Boxx tapped home the conversion to earn her third goal of the campaign.

Los Angeles finishes the regular season 12-3-5 (41 points), while Boston ends their season 7-9-4 (25 points).

The Sol will host the 2009 WPS Championship Game on August 22, 2009. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. ET and will be covered by Fox Sports Net.

Los Angeles-Boston: A Play-By-Play (and Other Miscellany)

Aug 9, 2009

T-31 minutes to kickoff: It's been quite a year in this inaugural Women's Professional Soccer season. But today, the regular season ends.

This match featuring the Los Angeles Sol and Boston Breakers is ther penultimate contest; the last one to cap off the season will pit FC Gold Pride against this year's Super Semi hosts, St. Louis Athletica.

Los Angeles will look to grab their first win of the season against the Breakers. They have been in disappointing form late in the past three games, and need to make a statement this afternoon at Harvard Stadium.

T-26: I like Harvard Stadium for a number of reasons, and they have nothing to do with the round ball. First, the historical significance of Soldier Field being the first stadium made of reinforced concrete resulted in the forward pass being a legal play.

Second, during the winter, they bring out this bubble which allows the stadium to be used for all seasons. It can become a practice and conditioning facility.

And third, the Crimson will be intent on defending their Ivy League title. Now if only they could beat Brown for once.

FIRST HALF START: 3:08 PM

1' - Here we go.

2' - And Marta leads the charge early, but Luckenbill is there.

3' - Boston on the counter-attack, but nothing doing as the Sol defense holds.

4' - Now here comes Han Duan, marked by Alex Scott. Off target pass for Marta. Goal kick Breakers.

5' - The Sol will need to open up the field. Here's Manya Makoski, who sends it to Boxx. Should have done better on that shot. Congrats also to Mr. Abner Rogers for winning the role of All-Star team manager.

6' - Not a good shot from Kelly Smith. LeBlanc gathers. Here comes Keri Sanchez. Dispossessed, and here's Hucles. The first corner of the contest. The FieldTurf doing a bit of a job on the road team. Corner cleared.

7' - Mary Frances Monroe tangled up with Makoski. Boston resets.

8' - Alex Scott marked. Corner number two. Cleared, but the Breakers continue to press. Sounds like a bunch of tins banging in the bleachers. Good intention from LePeilbet, but that was off on the replay.

10' - Not a good clearance from LePeilbet. First corner for the Sol. Poor header by Allison Falk. Goal kick Boston.

11' - Allison Lipsher is out due to a groin injury. Hence Luckinbill starting. Fabiana on the run. Luckinbill hails from Dartmouth College.

12' - Smith is a bit shaken up, but gets up. Here's Lilly, but she is denied. Corner number three. They take it short. Goal kick Sol.

13' - The ball is moving a bit too fast for some of the players' likings. This is where adjustments come into place. Wagner marked by Fabiana.

14' - Aya Miyama, bless her heart, she should have done better on that. Rogers has been asking the past week for production from the No. 8. We've yet to see that.

16' - GOAL! Boston #15 Kelly Smith Assist 13 Kristine Lilly
Her scoring slump from the end of May ends. The Sol bit on the run from the England international, and the Sol find themselves in a hole yet again.

17' - The Breakers are 7-0-0 when they score first. And Abner Rogers cannot be liking this one single bit.

18' - Have the Sol lost their scoring edge? A lofty ball is scooped up by Luckenbill.

19' - Boston is content passing the ball around. The fans continue the drumming.

20' - Bock needs to improve on her speed. Luckinbill and Hucles clear the ball.

21' - Ball movement battle this minute. Nothing too spectacular.

22' - Offsides. Camille Abily must be questioning the timing for the Women's Euro 2009.

24' - Still more passing. We have a strong turnout here at Soldiers Field; the home crowd understands the implications.

25' - Here's Fabiana. Yellow card to Cox. Free kick opportunity. Smith to take. It will be a corner. But LeBlanc takes it. Her GAA is starting to sink, is Karina's.

26' - A ball for Han Duan is intercepted. Here come the Breakers. The Sol clear it, and LeBlanc is asking her players to work with her. "Let's go!" she appeals.

28' - Luckinbill off her line with another stop.

29' - Too high a chance for Smith.

30' - Boston at it again, but Los Angeles is there. The touches for the away side should be eliciting groans a-plenty in the Southland.

31' - This is Scott. She resets, and Wagner wins possession. Han is under pressure, though. And Amy LePeilbet's closing speed wins it back for the Breakers.

32' - This literally a rug the players are playing on. No wonder to ball is moving quick. Here's Boston on the transition.

33' - We have our fifth corner of the match for the Breakers. Falk clears. Marta asking for someone to charge in the front. No one, and the Breakers snuff it out.

35' - Scott up the right side, and Fabiana is fouled. Free kick for Smith. Throw-in for Boston.

36' - This 4-5-1 is working its magic for DiCicco's team. Offsides Breakers.

37' - Lilly felt the sweet shin music, and she is limping...albeit she is up.

38' - Harsh challenge, and DiCicco is clamoring for a card. The fans are booing. Come on, you're up 1-0, what's the point in arguing.

39' - Offsides for Boston. No doubt, the urgency is there. And Sky Blue FC really wished they had beaten Washington yesterday.

40' - 1-0 Boston and we see some samba dancing. And a few Revolutions fans are in attendance, in hopes of payback. The Galaxy are back into form, and they continued their hotstreak with a 2-1 win over the Revs.

42' - Luckinbill catches that ball off the short hop. Han Duan should have challenged that ball. She is marked on her next opportunity.

43' - Two minutes of stoppage time will be added on this first half.

44'- A leaping save for LeBlanc. Well, I am convinced that Abner Rogers must be wondering if his team's campaign is indeed falling apart.

45' - Yellow card to Aly Wagner for fouling Mary Frances Monroe. Rogers must be thinking, 'Damage contol speech inside the locker room.' He knows it.

46' - Corner for the Sol. Cleared. And that wraps up the first half. The ineptitude for the Sol continues. I am shaking my head as I am typing this, rolling my eyes as if I was Rob Zombie.

HALFTIME

Boston Breakers 1
16' Smith

Los Angeles Sol 0

Smith's goal was the sixth of the season.

SECOND HALF START: 4:13 PM

46' - Can Boston consolidate and punch their ticket? Or can the Sol snap out of their funk for once?

Substitution Los Angeles Sol:
IN 20 Camille Abily
OUT 2 Keri Sanchez

I would love to see more of Captain Shannon's ability here.

49' - LA is applying the pressure. But Boston figures them out.

51' - Here comes Boston. Too high a volley. Goal kick.

52' - Makoski had to clear that from Lilly. A corner.

53' - Boston is unfazed by Abily's presence. The Sol clear.

54' - The Breakers are doing all they can to keep/consolidate their lead.

55' - Lilly piling on the shots, but LeBlanc is there.

58' - It's been a ball movement battle these past three minutes. Han Duan has disappointed in her risk-taking. She's playing this a little too safe.

59' - GOAL! Los Angeles Sol #10 Marta
She stumbled, but still had enough to bounce one past Luckenbill. Level terms. Game on! It's number 10 for No. 10.

60' - And that might be the wake-up call the Sol needs. Let's see if the Breakers can respond.

61' - LeBlanc scoops that up.

62' - Boston resets.

63' - Here's Smith, but Bock marks her. Substitution time.

64' - Substitution Boston Breakers:
IN 3 Kelly Schmedes
OUT 11 Mary-Frances Monroe

65' - Some good tackling in the Breakers' half. We will be seeing Amy Rodriguez later this game. Free kick Breakers.

66' - Oh, not again. The Sol nearly paid the price for having their back line breached.

67' - And again, they are letting Kelly Smith open. Abner must be asking, "What are you guys doing?"

68' - Substitution Boston Breakers:
IN 7 Christine Latham
OUT 15 Fabiana

A throw-in for the Sol.

69' - Smith draws a foul on Brittany Bock. Set piece time for Boston. 12 fouls to three in favor of LA in terms of fouls. Too high.

70' - Marta should have done better in trying to dispossess.

71' - Corner goes array for LA.

72' - Both teams are now pressing for that go-ahead.

73' - Tomecka clears that ball. Corner number foul for the Sol. Sky Blue FC is enjoying this.

74' - Substitution Boston Breakers:
IN 8 Amy Rodriguez
OUT 9 Candace Chapman

Here we go.

75' - Rodriguez has not had a very good year. But she can redeem herself in these last 15 minutes of possible fame. Abily is marked.

76' - No foul given. Play on, says Unkel. LeBlanc scoops that up.

77' - Trying to find Makoski, but it's not gonna work. Here's Alex Scott again, and now it's Smith. And Rodriguez should have done better.

78' - One-time from Kelly Smith is wide. LeBlanc wears a bemused expression. She knows that this isn't going to be good heading into the 22nd. Obviously.

79' - This is Latham. Now it's Schmedes. Not sure why Smith is trying to arm-wrestle LeBlanc to the ground. Wrong code, Kelly, wrong code.

80' - Goal kick for Los Angeles. Boston must be wondering, "What can we do to keep our season going?" Good question. How about getting the go-ahead?

81' - Another breakaway attempt, but the defense is ready for it.

82' - They really need to work on their offensive handling, the Sol. Getting a draw will not work. They need a win to boost their confidence.

83' - Corner Boston. LePeilbet unable to get a good header, and it's a goal kick for Los Angeles.

84' - Come on, Wagner. Patience. Jenn Hildreth is asking why rush things. Well Jenn, if you are on a team that has been off form for a few matches, obviously they have just a much a sense of urgency as ther Breakers do.

85' - They need a sense of confidence heading into the Championship Game. Therefore, you see the players stepping things up.

86' - Substitution Los Angeles Sol:
IN 6 McCall Zerboni
OUT 9 Han Duan

87' - Offsides Sol.

88' - They're trying to find Marta, but she got caught.

89' - All hands on deck here at Harvard Stadium.

90' - Three minutes of stoppage time. The crowd is getting tense.

91' - Penalty. Yellow card to Alex Scott for fouling. The crowd howls in disgust and disbelief, like the nor'easters that surround the Bay State of Massachusetts and all of New England.

92' - GOAL! 7 Shannon Boxx penalty
And that should just about do it. I'm over the moon right now. Finally the Sol snap out of their funk. Better late than never, eh?

FINAL

BOSTON BREAKERS 1
16' Smith

LOS ANGELES SOL 2
59' Marta
92' Boxx

And by the way Sky Blue FC, you are most certainly welcome.

Lisa Cole Takes the Controls for Breakers in Game against Athletica

Aug 6, 2009

After spending the first two-thirds of the Boston Breakers season as head coach Tony DiCicco's co-pilot, assistant coach Lisa Cole had the opportunity to take the controls in last Saturday's 1-0 loss to the Saint Louis Athletica.

Cole was given the opportunity to captain the Breaker ship thanks to a one-game suspension of DiCicco after he tap danced on the refereeing of Jose Carlos Rivero in the Breakers' 1-0 loss to the Washington Freedom.

Rivero handed down a red card in the fifth minute of the match to Breaker defender Alex Scott, forcing the Breakers to play short-handed the rest of the game.

DiCicco has since apologized for his comments, but was still suspended one game, fined $1,000, and required to work six hours of community service.

So with DiCicco relegated to watching the game from the hotel, assistant coach Cole got to wear the head coach hat for a day.

I asked Cole how it felt to fly solo following the loss to Saint Louis. "To be honest it was like most games, with how it happened and the situation we are in as a team," explained Cole, who coached collegiately and at the semi-pro level before joining the Breakers. "I was just focused on us coming up with a game plan to get a win vs. Saint Louis."

Cole explained that her Breaker team prepared for the game in much the same way they always do due in part to her familiarity with how DiCicco coaches. The duo has coached together previously and Cole has coached at DicCicco's SoccerPlus camps for more than a decade.

"I think here is definitely (coached like) Tony in the way things were done for the game. We did our pregame talk at the hotel so he could go over the keys and then in the locker room I just reminded them of the keys.

"When we were ready for the match to start I just went over the keys for the game and I reminded them that this was a great opportunity for us to rise above some adversity."

In addition to serving as the Breakers assistant, Cole is the President and Assistant Coach of the SoccerPlus Connecticut Reds, a Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) team, which is also coached by DiCicco. The team played its inaugural season in 2007 and won the USASA U-23 National Title, a USASA Bronze in the Open Cup, as well as qualifying for the WPSL playoffs.

She is also the Director for the SoccerPlus Education Center, a non-profit organization that provides and participates in educational programs, seminars, community outreach events, and individual mentoring on and off the soccer field.

Prior to this, Cole coached at the collegiate level, where she was assistant coach at Florida State in 2005 under well known head coach Mark Krikorian.

Cole's only collegiate head coaching position was in 2003 and 2004 at the University of Rhode Island, where she compiled a 19-18-4 record and a 13-6-3 record in Atlantic 10 play.

Before taking over the Rhode Island program, Cole spent three seasons (’00-’03) as an assistant at one of the most successful college soccer programs in America while working at the University of Connecticut under head coach Len Tsantiris.

During her playing days, Cole was a star goalkeeper at Pacific Lutheran College under Dr. Colleen Hacker, Sports Psychologist for the U.S. Women's National Team. While playing for Hacker, Cole set school records for most saves in a career (276) and a season (140).

As a senior for the Lutes she received National Conference of Independent College (NCIC) honors and was named Pacific Lutheran's Most Inspirational Player.

"I only called Dr. Colleen Hacker (my college coach and team sports psychologist) before the game," explained Cole. "Just to get any suggestions or advice and because she would have been mad if I hadn’t called," laughed Cole.

When asked if she has aspirations of moving up to the head coach position permanently some day, she replied, "Yes, I would like to be a head coach again at some level, college or professional. I have and continue to learn a lot from Tony, but would like the opportunity someday to take the lead."

At least for now, Cole will settle back into her position as DiCicco's right hand "person" as the Breakers fly towards a possible playoff berth. But Cole will long remember her first chance to pilot the craft on her own. (TC)

Three Breakers Voted Among First XI Selections for WPS All-Star Game

Aug 4, 2009
Boston Breakers defenders Amy LePeilbet and Alex Scott, along with midfielder Kelly Smith, were among Women’s Professional Soccer’s selections of the league’s First XI in preparation for its 2009 WPS All-Star Game it was announced on Tuesday.
Each of the players selected are invited to the 2009 WPS All-Star Game. The players were selected based on votes by fans (25%), media (25%), coaches (25%) and players (25%). Listed by position, club team and national team:
WPS All-Stars – First XI
Karina LeBlanc—GK—Los Angeles Sol—Canada
Tina Ellertson—D—Saint Louis Athletica—United States
Amy LePeilbet—D—Boston Breakers—United States
Alex Scott—D—Boston Breakers—England
Camille Abily—M—Los Angeles Sol—France
Sonia Bompastor—M—Washington Freedom—France
Shannon Boxx—M—Los Angeles Sol—United States
Lori Chalupny—M—Saint Louis Athletica—United States
Kelly Smith—M—Boston Breakers—England
Eniola Aluko—F—Saint Louis Athletica—England
Marta—F—Los Angeles Sol—Brazil
LePeilbet was among the leading vote-getters, finishing first overall in the player vote, and tied for first in the coaches voting with Los Angeles Sol’s Marta.
This has been a breakthrough season for the former Arizona State and Pali Blues standout, as LePeilbet was brought back into the U.S. National Team for the first time since 2006. She has started in each of the United States’ past three matches, and has played in every minute of every Breakers game in which she wasn’t on National Team duty.
Smith leads the Breakers with five goals scored and was named the first WPS Player of the Month back in April. She has been slowed down by a knee injury for much of the season, but has provided a spark in Boston’s last two matches.
Scott has become arguably the top right back in the league and has proven to be a threat both in attack and defense. She has one goal and two assists this season.
Both Smith and Scott are not expected to play in the All-Star game, as they will be competing with England at the European Championships at the time the All-Star Game will be played.
Marta was the highest overall vote-getter, selected by 94% of all media ballots, along with all eligible coach’s ballots (teams can’t vote for their own players), second in the player vote, and finished fourth overall in the fan vote. Among each category of voters the top three vote-getters in descending order were:
Coaches: 1.) Marta & Amy LePeilbet (tie); 3.) Eniola Aluko & Lori Chalupny (tie)
Media: 1.) Marta; 2.) Camille Abily; 3.) Sonia Bompastor
Players: 1.) Amy LePeilbet; 2.) Marta; 3.) Sonia Bompastor
Fans: 1.) Hope Solo; 2.) Lori Chalupny; 3.) Shannon Boxx
More than 25,000 ballots were cast online by fans, and all players on WPS rosters voted, including their choice for the WPS All-Star Team Head Coach (though similar to the coach’s vote, players could not vote for their teammates). The players selected Los Angeles Sol head coach, Abner Rogers, to lead the 2009 WPS All-Stars.
With several players expected to be unavailable due to national team commitments at the 2009 European Championships, the First XI players who cannot play will be replaced by the next-highest vote-getters at that position announced later this week.
A total of 18 WPS players will be part of the WPS All-Star Team, with the WPS Commissioner and the All-Star Game Head Coach, Abner Rogers, selecting the other seven WPS All-Star Team members.
The 2009 WPS All-Star Game features the WPS All-Stars against Swedish league champions Umeå IK at The Anheuser-Busch Soccer Park in Fenton, Mo., on Sunday, August 30, with kick-off scheduled for 5:30pm ET/4:30pm CT.
The game will be televised live nationally on Fox Soccer Channel and regionally on select Fox Sports Net affiliates (check local listings) with coverage starting at 5:00 p.m. ET with a half-hour pre-game show prior to kick-off.
For information or to reserve tickets for the 2009 WPS All Star Game call 1-888-STL-GOAL or visit www.SaintLouisAthletica.com. Group and individual tickets are now on sale.
The Anheuser-Busch Soccer Park is currently the home field of the Saint Louis Athletica and has a rich soccer tradition dating back almost three decades to when it opened in 1982.

Boston Breakers Playoff Picture May Need a Mathematician to Figure Out

Aug 3, 2009

The Boston Breakers enter their final match of the regular season as one of three teams looking to grab one of the two remaining playoff spots in Women's Professional Soccer (WPS). However, it may take an Einstein to figure out whether they're in or spending the fall on the sidelines.

The Breakers are currently in fourth place entering this Sunday's game at Harvard Stadium against Marta and the WPS Champion Los Angeles Sol. The game will be broadcast nationally on Fox Soccer Channel (FSC) beginning at 6:00 PM.

The Breakers trail the third-place Washington Freedom by one point in the standings, with one game remaining for each team. Boston currently has a two-point lead over Sky Blue FC for the fourth and final spot, but the New Jersey club has two matches to on the schedule this week.

The Breakers fate will be clear before they play the Sol on Sunday.

Key Games this Week
Wednesday: FC Gold Pride at Sky Blue FC
Saturday: Sky Blue FC at Washington
Sunday: Los Angeles at Boston

Scenarios
The Breakers are in the playoffs if:
- Boston defeats Los Angeles on Sunday, regardless of the rest of the results.
OR:
- Sky Blue FC fails to earn more than one point (i.e. two losses, or a tie and a loss) from its remaining two matches.
OR:
- There is a three-way tie for third place: This happens if Boston ties Los Angeles on Sunday, and Sky Blue FC defeats Washington on Saturday but loses to FC Gold Pride on Wednesday. All three teams would be on 26 points, and by virtue of tie-breakers, Boston would finish ahead of at least Washington—guaranteeing fourth place or better. (Due to an imbalanced amount of games played between the three teams, head-to-head meetings are thrown out and the first tie-breaker becomes goal differential. If this scenario plays out, Boston’s goal differential remains -1, while Washington’s will be -3 or worse. Sky Blue FC’s differential is unknown.)

The Breakers will earn the No. 3 seed and a home playoff game if:
- Boston defeats Los Angeles on Sunday, Washington ties or loses to Sky Blue FC on Saturday, and Sky Blue FC ties or loses to FC Gold Pride on Wednesday.

The Breakers are out of the playoffs if:
- Boston loses to Los Angeles on Sunday, and Sky Blue FC earns two or more points (i.e. two ties or better) from its remaining two matches.

Breakers Miss Opportunity to Clinch Playoff, Lose To St Louis 1-0

Aug 1, 2009

Eniola Aluko scored her sixth goal of the season to lead Saint Louis Athletica past the Boston Breakers, 1-0, in Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) action Saturday night at the Anheuser-Busch Soccer Park in Fenton, Mo.

As a result of the win and Washington’s 3-2 loss at FC Gold Pride earlier today, Saint Louis (9-6-3, 30 points) has clinched the second seed in the WPS Playoffs and will host the WPS Super Semifinal on Aug. 19.
Boston (7-8-4, 25 points) would have clinched a playoff spot with a victory, but now remains in fourth place. The Breakers are one point behind third-place Washington, and two points ahead of Sky Blue FC, but the New Jersey side has one match in hand over Boston. The top four teams make the playoffs.
“I think we played pretty well,” said Breakers assistant coach Lisa Cole, who filled in for head coach Tony DiCicco tonight following his suspension handed down by the league on Friday.
“There were moments in the first half in which we kind of got away from our game plan. We put together a good half and put together several good opportunities that just didn’t fall for us. I’m proud of how we played and competed, but we have to finish.”
Athletica got on the board in the 36th minute. Amanda Cinalli sent a low cross from the right side that found its way past a line of players along the top of the penalty area and fell to Aluko, who then beat Boston goalkeeper Alli Lipsher with a low shot from close range.
The Breakers had a couple of threats to open the scoring earlier in the half. The first came in the fifth minute when Kristine Lilly and Jennie Nobis pressured Saint Louis defender Kia McNeil into giving up the ball. Lilly then broke in on goal but fired her shot wide of the near post.
Boston had another chance in the 16th minute off a corner.  Lilly's corner was headed out of the box by the Athletica defense right to Kelly Smith at the top of area, but her shot went just over the crossbar.
The hosts had a chance to add to their lead in first half stoppage time when Niki Cross took a free drive from a free kick 30 yards out that went just wide of the left post.
Smith had a great chance for an equalizer in the 65th minute when Heather Mitts sent a pass to her in the penalty area. Smith turned and shot toward the upper right corner but Hope Solo was able to turn the shot away for a corner.
Sara Walsh nearly put the game away for Athletica in the 86th minute when she took a shot from distance that hit the left post and bounced safely back to Lipsher.
The Breakers’ last good opportunity came when Kelly Schmedes sent a cross to Maggie Tomecka in front of goal in the 88th minute, but she wasn’t able to get enough of her head on the ball to trouble Solo.
Boston returns home for the team’s regular season finale on Sunday, Aug. 9th, to face WPS Regular Season Champions Los Angeles at Harvard Stadium at 6 p.m.

Boston Breakers Forced To Play With Ten In Loss To Freedom, 1-0

Jul 30, 2009
The Boston Breakers held on by the tips of their laces for much of the game competing down a player from the fifth minute on. At the 73 minute mark, Abby Wambach finally broke through for the Washington Freedom in a 1-0 win over the Breakers in Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) action Wednesday night at Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md.
Boston defender Alex Scott was handed a red card in just the fifth minute of the match for a foul on Sonia Bompastor, forcing the Breakers to play with only 10 players for the majority of the match. It was the first red card given to a Boston player this season.
“I’m really proud of the players, they played their hearts out,” said Breakers head coach Tony DiCicco. “The game changed unfortunately in the fifth minute and Washington did what they needed to do. I just feel very bad for my players to have to have played a very difficult game.”
Wambach’s goal was her team-leading sixth of the year as she took a through ball from Lisa De Vanna, beat a defender and shot the ball past Ali Lipsher to break the deadlock. The goal snapped a team season-best 396-minute scoreless streak for the Breakers.
With the loss, the Breakers (7-7-4, 25 points) fall back into fourth place, while the Freedom (7-6-5) move ahead of Boston into third. The Breakers can clinch a playoff spot with a win on Saturday against Saint Louis, followed by a Sky Blue FC loss next Wednesday.
Kelly Smith entered the game as a second-half substitute for her first action in a Boston uniform since July 4. She nearly equalized the game in stoppage time when she took the ball from a Freedom defender at the edge of the box, side-stepped and forced goalkeeper Erin McLeod to tip the ball over the crossbar for a corner kick.
As a result of the red card, the Freedom enjoyed the better of the play for much of the first half, although Boston did mount some pressure in the later stages, and was only out-shot, 6-4.
The best scoring chance of the first half came from Rebecca Moros in the 21st minute, when she received a cross with space to the far post on the right side of the goal, but she shot high over the bar.
The Breakers next travel to Saint Louis to take on Athletica, Saturday at 8 p.m. (ET). The game will be televised locally in St. Louis on KPLR 11, and can be seen via live webcast on saintlouisathletica.com.
