Hosts Bangladesh won the opening game of the fifth ICC World Twenty20 tournament with a comfortable nine-wicket victory over Afghanistan in Mirpur.

The tournament debutants were skittled out for 72 in 17.1 overs after being put into bat by Mushfiqur Rahim at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

The Tigers reached their target with eight overs to spare as they commenced their Group A campaign with a commanding victory.

Afghanistan’s tournament could have not started in worse fashion as Mohammad Shahzad was dismissed with the opening ball of the match.

Gulbadin Naib top scored with 21 but his wicket was the first of three to fall with the score on 36 and they lost their final four wickets for three runs.

Shakib Al Hasan was the pick of the bowlers with 3-8.

In their reply, Bangladesh openers Tamim Iqbal and Anamul Haque put on 45 for the opening wicket.

The World T20 has been expanded to 16 teams this year with the two lowest ranked full members, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, joined by six qualifiers.

Those eight teams are split into two groups and play in a round-robin format with the winner of each group joining the top eight ranked nations in the Super 10 stage, which begins on March 21.

Bangladesh and Afghanistan face off in their second Asia Cup matches on Saturday, having both been defeated in their opening games of the tournament.

Venue: Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium, Fatullah

Date: Saturday, March 1

Start time: 8 a.m. GMT

Live on: Star Cricket (India), PTV Sports (Pakistan), MTV Sports (Sri Lanka), Channel 9 (Bangladesh), 1 TV (Afghanistan), Star Life OK (UK), ATN (Canada), Willow TV (USA)

Weather: According to Weather.com, it will be partly cloudy with a high of 28 degrees Celsius.

Overview

Bangladesh’s opening game of the tournament ended in a defeat by six wickets to India, but it had started well as they batted first and tallied 279-7 from their 50 overs.

Anamul Haque started things off at the top of the order with 77, while captain Mushfiqur Rahim led the way with 117.

Only three other players reached double figures as Mohammed Shami restricted them effectively.

In reply, Bangladesh had their opponents wobbling slightly at 54-2 after Abdur Razzak and Ziaur Rahman removed Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma in the space of two overs.

However, that brought Virat Kohli and Ajinkya Rahane to the crease, and they mounted a partnership of 213 to take India to the brink of victory.

It was then left to Ambati Rayudu and Dinesh Karthik to take their side home, which they did for the loss of just four wickets with an over to spare.

For Bangladesh, Rubel Hossain, Razzak, Rahman and Sohag Gazi took one wicket apiece, with the majority of their bowlers going at five runs per over or more.

Meanwhile, Afghanistan’s debut in the Asia Cup also ended in defeat as they lost to Pakistan by 72 runs.

Batting first, Ahmed Shehzad made 50 and Umar Akmal an unbeaten 102 for Pakistan.

For Afghanistan, Dawlat Zadran, Mirwais Ashraf and Samiullah Shenwari each took two wickets, while Hamza Hotak took one as they kept Pakistan to 248-8 from their 50 overs.

In reply, the Afghans started well with Noor Ali Zadran and Asghar Stanikzai making 44 and 40, respectively, at the top of the order.

Unfortunately, after both were removed, Afghanistan’s innings subsided with Mohammad Hafeez taking three wickets and Saeed Ajmal taking two on a spin-friendly pitch.

Afghanistan defeated Pakistan by 72 runs and now face the tournament hosts desperate to take a victory and show once again that they belong at the top level of international cricket.

Key Players

Mashrafe Bin Mortaza

Bangladesh’s premier seamer remains Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, still only 30 years old but vastly experienced in international cricket.

He may have gone wicketless against India but had a good economy rate of 4.88 per over and will be relied upon to still be a potent operator with the new ball.

Noor Ali Zadran

In Afghanistan’s loss to Pakistan in their first match, opener Noor Ali Zadran got them off to a good start with 44 from 63 balls.

It was a decent effort against a potent Pakistan bowing attack, and he will be looking to make an even better contribution while building a platform for his country.

After Sri Lanka won the Test series 1-0 over Bangladesh, the two teams begin their two-match Twenty20 International series in Chittagong with a day/night encounter.

Venue: Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium, Chittagong

Date: Wednesday, February 12

Start time: 11 a.m. GMT

Live on: Star Cricket (Asia), Zee Cinema (UK), Willow TV (USA)

Weather: According to AccuWeather, it promises to be a sunny day with temperatures reaching 28 degrees Celsius.

Overview

The limited-overs section of Sri Lanka’s tour of Bangladesh begins after a successful 1-0 win in the Test series for the visitors.

Their victory came in the first game in Mirpur by an innings and 248 runs, as Bangladesh crumbled twice for 250 or less while the Sri Lankans piled up 730 in their only knock.

In the second game, the hosts were much improved with the bat as they saw the game out for a draw in Chittagong despite conceding a first-innings lead of 161.

For this series, Bangladesh do have some injury concerns as captain and wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim will miss both Twenty20 matches with a small fracture in his left finger.

At the time of writing, the home side are yet to name a replacement skipper, but with Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim Iqbal and Mashrafe Bin Mortaza in their squad, they are not short of potential leaders.

For Sri Lanka, Thisara Perera has been selected despite having been refused permission to play in the recent Big Bash League after questions over his work ethic.

Lasith Malinga has also proved his fitness after making a return to Sri Lanka before he played in the BBL semi-final for the Melbourne Stars.

This series will be crucial for both sides as they build towards the ICC World Twenty20, to be held in Bangladesh in March.

Key Players

Tamim Iqbal

At the top of the order, Tamim Iqbal remains crucial if Bangladesh are to build a big total.

With his hard hitting, if Iqbal is in form he can make life very difficult for opposition bowlers and he has the ability to dominate any attack.

Lasith Malinga

Taking the new ball for Sri Lanka will be Lasith Malinga, who remains their most potent bowler in Twenty20 Internationals.

With his pace combined with swing and seam movement, Malinga is still one of the best bowlers in limited-overs cricket and will be key for the visitors once again.

Rahman made 106 and Kayes, playing his first Test since November 2011, contributed 115 in a record 232-run partnership for the second wicket.

Resuming on 86-1, after Tamim Iqbal was dismissed on Wednesday evening with the score on zero, the duo both made maiden Test centuries in the stand.

The hosts reached 201-1 at lunch with both men in the 90s before Rahman brought up his 100, in just his second Test, off 181 balls with 10 boundaries and a six.

Kayes was caught off a no-ball on 95 but brought up his ton, in his 17th match, off 185 balls with 16 boundaries and a maximum.

Both departed in the afternoon, clean bowled by Ajantha Mendis as they attempted to slog the spinner.

Between those dismissals, Mominul Haque had been trapped lbw by Dilruwan Perera for 13 as he tried to sweep the off-spinner.

That saw Bangladesh reduced to 289-4 at tea. Perera then picked up the wickets of Shakib Al Hasan and Mushfiqur Rahim.

Rahim made 20 before gloving to Kaushal Silva at short leg, while Shakib had reached his 16th Test half-century before driving straight to Dimuth Karunaratne at extra cover on 50.

Mendis then struck twice more late in the day. Nasir Hossain edged an attempted cut to Dinesh Chandimal behind the stumps after making 42, while Sohag Gazi was trapped lbw after failing to pick the googly

Bangladesh vs. New Zealand: Scorecard and Recap from 3rd ODI at Fatullah

Nov 3, 2013

Bangladesh 309-6 beat New Zealand 307-5 by four wickets

Bangladesh sealed a 3-0 series win against New Zealand in the final ODI encounter in Fatullah on Sunday, with big innings from Shamsur Rahman and Naeem Islam seeing the hosts to their second ever run-chase of more than 300, per ESPNCricinfo.

New Zealand were made to pay for some loose bowling, conceding 23 extras as Bangladesh chased down what had been an impressive score, with Ross Taylor nailing a fine century to put New Zealand in pole position.

Taylor's innings was impressive from the beginning, but New Zealand cut loose late in their innings to add 93 runs in the final 10 overs and see their premier batsman home to his century.

The innings was Taylor's second ODI ton of the year and it was he who took the reins in the final overs, utilising the slog sweep to full effect as he entered full-on Twenty20 mode.

Colin Munro had earlier taken the lead on upping the scoring rate, adding 85 runs at over a run per ball, with the visitors posting what was their best score of the series by some distance.

Bangladesh will be concerned at the ease with which they were dispatched late in the innings, but they were let off the hook by New Zealand's slack bowling.

The response was brisk, with Shamsur scoring at a fair rate while pinch-hitter Ziaur Rahman looked to score in early boundaries.

In the absence of experienced opener Tamim Iqbal, a quick-fire partnership of 61 at the top of the innings was exactly what the hosts needed, before Shamsur continued to carry the attack to New Zealand with the support of Mominul Haque.

Per ESPNCricinfo, the Bangladeshi batsmen also took full advantage of new fielding restrictions outside of powerplay overs, chipping the ball over the infield into the empty spaces in the deep.

Naeem Islam added a solid 64 in the middle order, calmly keeping the runs ticking over en route to a fifth ODI 50 as Bangladesh began to see victory within reach.

Nasir Hossain's quick-fire 44 late in the innings was the boost needed, and with the help of solid lower order contributions, he helped Bangladesh to a second consecutive home series whitewash over New Zealand.

The series success is another boost to Bangladeshi cricket, after promising ODI results over the past 12 months, including a home series victory over West Indies and an away 1-1 draw in Sri Lanka, per ESPNCricinfo.

Form

Unfortunately from a neutral’s point of view, this three-match one-day international (ODI) series between the ninth and eight-ranked ODI sides in the world has already been decided, with the hosts currently 2-0 up after victories in the opening two contests in Dhaka.

Mushfiqur Rahim’s men won the opening encounter by 43 runs on the Duckworth-Lewis method, thanks to a 154-run partnership for the fourth wicket between the skipper, who made 90 (see video below) and Naeem Islam that helped the home side post a competitive 265 all out.

Thanks to career-best ODI figures of six for 26 from medium-pacer Rubel Hossain—including a stunning hat-trick (see video below)—the Black Caps were skittled for just 162 in reply, despite a valiant knock of 71 from No. 3 Grant Elliott.

The hosts then wrapped up the series on Thursday after another impressive all-round display in the capital.

On that occasion, big-hitting opener Tamim Iqbal led the way with 58 at the top of the order as Bangladesh set the tourists 248 to keep the series alive, largely thanks to another impressive spell of bowling from new boy James Neesham, who followed up his four-wicket haul in the first game by grabbing another four with his innocuous dibbly dobblers.

However, in the end, the Kiwis fell 40 runs short of their victory target, man-of-the-match Sohag Gazi doing most of the damage by returning impressive figures of three for 34 with the ball.

Key men

Bangladesh: As always with the home side, the left-handed opener Tamim Iqbal can have a huge bearing on just how well the rest of the batting lineup performs.

The 24-year-old, who will be featuring in his 125th ODI for his country on Sunday, can take a game away from the opposition with the bat in next to no time, in a similar way to West Indies’ Chris Gayle.

As Bangladesh’s only really world-class performer in the side with either bat or ball, in the absence of captain and key all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, Tamim’s importance to his team’s chances of success cannot be overstated.

New Zealand: If the Black Caps are to come away with a consolation win in the third and final ODI at Fatullah on Sunday, then you get the distinct feeling that experienced middle-order batsman Ross Taylor will need to come to the fore with a match-winning innings.

The 29-year-old top-scored for the tourists with 45 from 82 balls in their loss in the second match, while making just eight in the opening game, but as the most accomplished of his side’s batsmen—as well as the best player of spin bowling, too—a huge amount will rest on the broad shoulders of the former Kiwi skipper.

Other information

Weather:
Expecting a low of 20 degrees Celsius and a high of 28 degrees Celsius (information from Viewweather).

Pitch: Amazingly the last international to be staged at Fatullah was all of seven years ago, shortly after the ground had been given clearance by the International Cricket Council to stage matches. Australia thrashed their hosts by nine wickets inside 23 overs as Bangladesh were rolled over for just 124 after winning the toss, with left-arm chinaman Brad Hogg taking three for 17.

Consistency Is Key Element Missing in Bangladesh Cricket Team

Oct 25, 2013

With consistency not part of their routine, Bangladesh is truly a subcontinent cricket nation.

Blowing hot and cold at will, standing up against the top tier and bowing down meekly against the second, the small cricketing nation has not been able to deliver its promise despite repeated attempts and cameos.

Bangladesh drew the two-match Test series against New Zealand, even reaching 501 in the first Test while taking the lead. This side had lost to Zimbabwe by 337 runs earlier this year, failing to go past 147 in either innings. A few weeks before that, they had managed 638 in Sri Lanka. Since making their Test debut almost 13 years ago, Bangladesh have managed just four wins out of the 81 Tests they have played, losing a whopping 67 while drawing just 10. Their first win took almost five years—against Zimbabwe—and the next another four.

Back-to-back decent performances are key to a side’s progress, and that is essentially absent from the Bangladeshi cricket team. Things might have been very different had rain not helped the hosts in the second Test after their failure to bring their good form into the match.

"After playing the first Test, we often could not take that into the second game," Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim said after the umpires called off the match. "Though our batting didn't click in the first innings, we proved through the second innings that our team is maturing.”

Even the touring captain agreed with that.

"We wanted to win this Test series and were expected to do so as well," Brendon McCullum said. "We played good cricket in this series, our batting was outstanding and our bowling stood up in tough conditions. I think a drawn series is a fair reflection because Bangladesh played some excellent cricket as well.”

They are ranked even below Zimbabwe in the ICC’s Test rankings, in effect the worst Test playing nation in the world. So, why, despite decent shows against Sri Lanka earlier this year, and now New Zealand, can’t Bangladesh threaten regular upsets against better sides?

Therein lies Bangladesh’s problem. Consistency is nowhere to be seen. Centuries are scored but are not followed up with more decent shows. Four wins in 13 years does not justify the talent that the team possesses. Mohammad Ashraful, Shakib Al Hasan, Rahim, Abdur Razzaq, Tamim Iqbal and even Mashrafe Murtaza (when he’s fit and able) are players who have what it takes to perform at the biggest stage.

The facilities, the grounds and world-class coaching is on hand. The results, however, aren’t.

Perhaps, it is due to the lack of Tests. Bangladesh’s series against New Zealand was their first after nearly six months. And that has been a trend with the side in the last few years, prompting Rahim to ask for more Tests as his side strives to go up in the ranking tables.

"It was not easy because we were playing Test cricket after five, six months, and we could not avail the opportunity to play the longer version, so it was definitely a challenge. I ask whoever is in charge to give us the opportunity to play more Tests. Whether we fare good or bad is another question. If we cannot play Test cricket, how can a player like Mominul score a hundred or Gazi take six wickets? In future, hopefully, we will play more Test matches so that we can show that Bangladesh is improving day by day."

It could also be self-belief, failure to realise the potential and the ability within. That’s something that has been affecting them for a long time. By the looks of things on the field and the quick turnaround, it could be a few more years until Bangladesh players get over it.

Tamim Iqbal: Great Bangladesh Batsman or Underachiever?

Oct 22, 2013

Tamim Iqbal's innings on the opening day of the second Test against New Zealand on Monday was a rather neat encapsulation of his career thus far.

Style, aggression and talent powered the 24-year-old to a brisk 95, before naive carelessness brought about his downfall. After flaying the Kiwi attack for 17 boundaries (with the aid of some good fortune), the brightest light in the Bangladeshi side threw his wicket away with the very ignorance that may prove to be the handbrake on his career.

With a platform well set at 208-3, Tamim was the batsman that needed to enforce the home side's advantage by ensuring his team pushed on past 400. He'd ridden a degree of luck to that point and was in position to capitalise on the lifelines afforded to him by the tourists.

Yet, instead of inflicting pain on New Zealand, Tamim allowed them back into the game, using his bat as a ramp to spoon-feed a catch to Kane Williamson at gully.

The error of judgement would have been excusable in different circumstances had prior warning not already been given. But after watching a collection of erroneous shots fly past (or through) the hands of the fielders behind the wicket, the left-hander should have been acutely aware of the danger that existed behind point.

An obvious lesson not learnt, the halt in progress that Tamim's dismissal had on his team's innings was much the same that his ingenuousness may have on Bangladesh's overall progress.

While his high stakes approach can be rousing, you can't help but feel that a lack of poise and nous are handcuffing him to a post of underachievement.

What comes natural to Tamim are the more difficult elements of batting: Scoring with freedom, sending the ball to all corners and batting with a defined, graceful style. Unusually, it's the mental application and psychological basics that appear to be a challenge.

In fact, Tamim's approach reminds of a young Michael Clarke. The now-Australia captain employed an exuberant, yet brash attitude in his early years, which saw his career flirt dangerously with mediocrity.

However, unlike Tamim, Clarke had all-powerful pillars of example surrounding his existence in the Australian team, which undoubtedly led to the development that has seen him become one of his nation's all-time greats.

Tamim, meanwhile, is embedded in a setup with far lower benchmarks. Bangladesh's ongoing infancy in the Test arena means that the promising 24-year-old will not be shaped by a long history of excellence.

In essence, the dashing opener needs to be the man to set the expectations.

It's that very point which currently separates Tamim from being great by his nation's moderate standards and being great by international cricket's standards.

That difference is represented by the immensely talented batsman's Test record. When comparing Tamim against both his Bangladeshi contemporaries and predecessors, the 24-year-old's record sits as arguably his country's finest.

Mushfiqur Rahim362,07820032.46
Shakib Al Hasan322,07314436.36

A superior average that is enhanced by four impressive hundreds should see the emerging talent become Bangladesh's highest run scorer in the near future.

But given the talent at his disposal, that should be the least of his ambitions.

Yet, it's when you compare Tamim's record to other emerging batsmen of a similar age that it becomes clear he's underachieving and, perhaps, restrained by the cricketing stature of his nation.

Tamim Iqbal (BAN)30 2,151 151 37.73
Steve Smith (AUS)12 765 138* 34.77

The four players above Tamim (sorted by average) all own less experience in the Test arena than the Bangladeshi, while Steve Smith sitting below has undergone a transformation with regards to his role.

With 30 Test appearances, the 24-year-old should own both the ability and know-how to be jostling amongst the top spots on this list. Certainly, the stroke play and raw talent are there to enable him to rival the likes of Dinesh Chandimal and Darren Bravo.

Frustratingly, it's the manner of his dismissal on day one of the ongoing Test against the Black Caps that perfectly illustrates his predicament.

Prolific run scoring is prevented by moments of calamity. His composure, or lack thereof, threatens to condemn Bangladesh's brightest star to a prison of underachievement.

You can point to two wasted innings against the West Indies in 2011 for examples, when potential centuries were blown. Tamim did much the same against the identical opponent a year later, while another poor shot halted his team's progress against Sri Lanka earlier this year.

It's those lose shots, that lack of application, which are the glaring weaknesses in his arsenal. For the talented 24-year-old to breakthrough the current ceiling in place for Bangladeshi players, Tamim must elevate his own expectations.

Being his nation's star is longer enough. Being an international star should be the next target.

Bangladesh Premier League: 9 Individuals Charged with Match-Fixing Offences

Aug 13, 2013

Nine individuals have been formally charged with match-fixing and other offences as a result of incidents during this year's Bangladesh Premier League.

News agency Reuters reported that not all of the nine involved were players and that they now have a fortnight to plead their case to an anti-corruption tribunal. Seven are accused of either match-fixing or spot-fixing, two others of failing to report an illegal approach about fixing.

The news follows on the heels of arrests in the 2013 IPL. Amongst those implicated in fixing scandals were three Rajasthan Royals players, including India international Sreesanth, as reported by Cricinfo.

"The charges relate to an alleged conspiracy within the Dhaka Gladiators franchise to engage in match-fixing and spot-fixing activity during matches in the BPL 2013, as well as failures by individuals to report approaches made to them to be involved in the conspiracy," the ICC said in a statement.

The Bangladesh Premier League was formed in 2012, and while two full seasons of the tournament have been played, it has also been beset by problems.

It has already seen Mohammed Ashraful, a popular local batsman, admit to spot-fixing in this year's tournament in May:

I should have not done this injustice to the nation. I feel guilty. I can only say, please all forgive me, my conduct was improper.

In 2012, meanwhile, the Daily Telegraph claimed that English players playing for the eight franchise teams in the inaugural edition of the tournament had not been paid.

Angus Porter, chief executive of the Professional Cricketers’ Association, told the newspaper:

The contract was brokered by FICA (international players union) and set out the players should get 25 per cent before the start of the tournament, 50 per cent during it and 25 per cent at the end. A handful have received 75 per cent, but most only 25. I don’t know of anyone who has received the full payment.

This is not just an England problem. It impacts on players from all nations. If the Bangladesh Cricket Board is seeking to build long term relationships with players and want them to come back and play next year then this is not a very good way to go about it. I don’t know what is going on behind the scenes but I do have a concern that this may be something more than a delay.

Cricket World Cup: Bangladesh Defeats Ireland in a Dramatic Win

Feb 25, 2011

Bangladesh's bowlers held their nerve to atone for the failures of their batsman, as the pluck of the Irish proved insufficient to overcome the most fervent atmosphere of the Cricket World Cup so far.

In a gripping, low-scoring encounter at Mirpur, Bangladesh flirted with disaster as they squandered a flying start from Tamim Iqbal to crash to 205 all out. When Ireland reached 93 for 3 at the halfway mark of their reply, they were well on course for a hugely deserved victory.

However, six wickets for the Bangladeshi spin quartet set the stage for a flying finish from Shafiul Islam. He claimed 4 for 21 in eight hostile and reverse-swinging overs, to seal a wildly acclaimed victory by 27 runs with five overs to spare.

The result was tough on the Irish who, like the Netherlands earlier in the week, gave the match their all and deserved a Test-playing scalp as their reward. But the belief and unity of the Bangladeshis had to be seen to be believed, as they dusted themselves down after a chastising performance with the bat and set about defending their meagre total with skill, tenacity and some sublime commitment in the field.

Mohammad Ashraful, whose mercurial batting once again let him down when the heat was on, proved a revelation with the ball. His spin-bowling all-sorts picked up two vital wickets inside the first 19 overs. Yet his subsequent celebrations imbued both his teammates—and perhaps more crucially, a rammed and expectant Mirpur crowd, with belief.

There will be many higher-profile fixtures than this in the coming weeks, but few could prove as pivotal to the fortunes of two teams who exceeded expectations four years ago in reaching the Super Eights in the Caribbean.

Ireland's hopes of playing in the 2015 tournament hinge on their ability to produce this sort of performance in each of their next five matches to convince the ICC that they deserve their place at the top table.

More immediately however, Bangladesh's victory gives them a real chance of pushing for a quarterfinal place that their form in home internationals suggest could be attainable.
