Elias Hernandez Performance Puts Mexico Past El Salvador in Gold Cup Opener

Mexico got its 2017 Gold Cup campaign off to a bright start Sunday, defeating El Salvador 3-1 at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego.

Hedgardo Marin opened the scoring for Mexico in the eighth minute with a thumping header, only to see El Salvador equalize just two minutes later on a well-placed strike by Nelson Bonilla. Elias Hernandez put Mexico ahead again in the 29th minute on a volley, and Orbelin Pineda provided the insurance goal early in the second half.

Hernandez was easily the most impactful player on the field, dangerous throughout the contest and finishing with a goal and two assists.

There was plenty of attacking soccer to be had in this game. Mexico finished with 66 percent possession and 16 shots (seven on goal) to El Salvador's 12 (four on goal), per ESPNFC.us.

The result pushes Mexico to the top of Group C after the first round of games. Jamaica defeated Curacao, 2-0, earlier Sunday in Group C play.

Mexico came into the Gold Cup as favorites to win the tournament and, aside from a few lapses in concentration, were clearly the better side on the day and appear ready to make good on their promise.

It was a bright start for El Tri, as they got on the front foot quickly and were rewarded with an early goal. Mexico won a free kick deep in El Salvador's half, and Elias Hernandez took the set piece, sending in a swerving kick that Marin did well to bury from a header.

Fox Soccer provided a highlight:

ESPN Stats & Info noted it was a rare goal for the Mexican center back:

Mexican fans at Qualcomm Stadium hardly had time to settle back into their seats before El Savador countered. Fox Soccer has the highlight of Bonilla's goal:

Soccer journalist Jon Arnold passed along this translation showing it's been quite some time since El Salvador managed a goal like Bonilla's equalizer against Mexico:

Following the opening salvo and the lightning-quick rebuttal, Mexico settled into the game, dominating possession with crisp passing and controlled buildup. However, El Salvador was resolute in defense and quick on the counter, even managing to generate more chances early on.

But Mexico were the more clinical finishers in this contest and broke the deadlock in the 29th minute on a sensational Hernandez volley, from an accurate cross by Jesus Gallardo.

As the Fox Soccer highlight shows, the 29-year-old Club Leon attacker was unmarked on the play:

ESPN Stats & Info noted it was the third straight game in which Hernandez notched a goal for Mexico.

The second half saw Mexico running rampant for the most part, with rapid counters and excellent passing putting the El Salvadoreans on the back foot on multiple occasions. El Tri got the insurance goal it needed in the 55th minute, courtesy of Pineda, who came into the midfield as a halftime substitute.

Gold Cup 2017 provided a look at the tally:

ESPN FC's Tom Marshall noted Hernandez's contributions in the match:

Multiple injury stoppages broke up the action in the second half, a marked difference from the free-flowing play seen in the first half.

El Salvador was disappointed to see starting goalkeeper Benji Villalobos leave the game with about 15 minutes remaining. He took a sizzling Hernandez shot to the face earlier in the contest, only to limp off the field a few minutes later and be replaced by Derby Carrillo.

Group C play will resume Thursday, with Mexico taking on Jamaica and El Salvador playing against Curacao.

With USA starting off the Gold Cup with a frustrating 1-1 draw with Panama, Mexico will have only cemented their status as tournament favorites in the early going.

Mexico's defence of the CONCACAF Gold Cup will begin in San Diego on Sunday when they take on El Salvador.

Ranked 103rd in the world by FIFA, El Salvador are the minnows of a group that also contains Curacao and Jamaica.

Read on for a closer look at El Tri's opening match, but first, here are the viewing details you need to catch them in action:

Mexico boss Juan Carlos Osorio has had to pick an inexperienced side for the 2017 Gold Cup following the side's exertions in the Confederations Cup in Russia, where he opted for their strongest team.

ESPN FC's Cesar Hernandez noted the frequency with which El Tri have faced multiple tournaments over the course of one summer:

As a result of his selection, only six players in the 23-man squad have reached double figures in caps and just two have made more than 30 appearances for the senior side.

The players selected have mustered just seven goals for their national team between them, so defending their title here will be a real challenge.

While striker Erick Torres has only contributed one of those goals—having played just four times for Mexico—he'll likely be the man tasked with firing them to glory.

He comes into the tournament in excellent form, having scored 12 and assisted two goals in 18 appearances for Houston Dynamo this season.

The club shared a look at his recent goal against FC Dallas in MLS:

The pressure will be on Osorio following Mexico's slightly disappointing Confederations Cup campaign, and it's unlikely to be easy given the largely inexperienced squad available to him.

Nevertheless, they should have little trouble getting through the group stage at the very least, and they should be able to kick off their tournament with a win on Sunday.

Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio has been suspended for six matches by FIFA for using "insulting words towards the match officials while displaying an aggressive attitude towards them" during his team's encounter against Portugal at the 2017 Confederations Cup.

The governing body confirmed the punishment via their official website, with a fine of CHF 5,000 handed out to the manager.

The FIFA statement read:

"Depending on the stage at which the final match of the Mexican national team takes place in the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2017, any remaining matches of this six-match suspension shall be served during the national team’s subsequent official matches."

The third-place playoff saw the Mexicans denied victory in the final seconds as Pepe fired home in the dying embers.

An own goal from Luis Neto had given Osario's team a precious lead after excellent work from Javier Hernandez on 54 minutes.

However, the goal from the experienced Portuguese defender triggered extra-time, and Mexico were defeated after Adrien Silva's late penalty.

Both sides had a player sent-off in the heated contest.

Mexico are no strangers to Houston having featured there during the last edition of the Copa America.

El Tri will pit their wits against the Black Stars as they prepare for the Gold Cup at the NRG Stadium.

Some of Mexico's biggest players will be missing, but they will return at a later date for World Cup qualifiers.

According to Sky Sports, Ghana are out of form having lost three of their last six contests.

Defeats to Burkina Faso, Cameroon and Egypt will have left moral low, but a draw against Benin stopped the slide in May.

According to Evans Gyamera-Antwi of Goal, Ghana have named a competitive squad for the game in the United States, including Asamoah Gyan, Frank Acheampong and Majeed Waris.

However, Andre Ayew and Jordan Ayew have been omitted from the long journey to Houston as they prepare for next season.

Mexico will be overwhelming favourites to carve out a victory, but the amount of minutes received for their squad players will be the focus.

El Tri will be determined to enjoy success at the Gold Cup, and this match will be valuable in their preparations.

Mexico Come from Behind to Beat Russia 2-1 in 2017 Confederations Cup

Mexico turned a 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 win and a spot in the next round of the 2017 Confederations Cup against hosts Russia on Saturday.

Aleksandr Samedov gave his side a deserved lead after 25 minutes, but Nestor Araujo and Hirving Lozano took advantage of some sloppy goalkeeping to turn the situation around. Yuri Zhirkov was sent off for the Russians.

The two teams' Twitter accounts announced the lineups for the game at the Kazan Arena:

Russia needed a win to advance and made the brighter start to the match, although the first chance fell to El Tri, with Lozano putting goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev to work, albeit with a tame shot.

Fedor Smolov wanted a penalty after a rash challenge from Hector Moreno and perhaps should have earned the spot-kick, and the FC Krasnodar man didn't have any more luck when a Mexican defender impeded his shot.

Smolov hit the post after 24 minutes, blasting a shot through a crowd and past Mexico 'keeper Guillermo Ochoa, but Samedov finally broke the deadlock a minute later.

Per ESPN FC's Gabriele Marcotti, the lead was well-deserved:

Russia's advantage didn't last long, however. Just five minutes after the opener, Akinfeev didn't respond in time to a floating cross into the box, and he was caught in no-man's land as Araujo lobbed a header into the far corner.

Lars Pollmann of Bleacher Report UK didn't understand the goalkeeper's thought process:

https://twitter.com/LarsPollmann/status/878636894367739904

Aleksandr Erokhin missed a golden opportunity to restore the lead from close range, and he ended the half with another poor miss, sending a header high and wide.

Russia started the second half well and Samedov even had a goal correctly ruled out for offside, but the hosts were undone by another Akinfeev blunder. The goalkeeper came off his line to clear a poor pass but got his timing completely wrong, allowing Lozano to nip in and head home.

Marcotti gave the scorer some credit:

Erokhin fired a curling shot wide before the video review system robbed Moreno of a goal, with the defender judged to be in an offside position.

Russia needed some momentum badly, but Zhirkov had other plans, striking Miguel Layun with an elbow and getting himself sent off in the 68th minute. Toke Theilade of Russian Football News thought it was almost fitting:

Diego Reyes came within inches of adding to the lead, just missing a great cross, before Igor Smolnikov could have tied things up but sent his volley high over the crossbar.

Russia tried to put together a late offensive but could barely threaten, with El Tri exploiting their one-man advantage. Mexico held on for the win to book their spot in the next round alongside Portugal, who beat New Zealand 4-0.

Mexico won their last match, beating New Zealand 2-1 on Wednesday, despite putting key attackers Javier Hernandez and Carlos Vela on the bench. Yet it was the introduction of another substitute, FC Porto schemer Hector Herrera, that turned the match in El Tri's favour.

Herrera changed the game against New Zealand.
Herrera changed the game against New Zealand.

The 27-year-old deep-lying playmaker transformed the pace of Mexico's passing, exploiting the angles to put his team on the front foot against a disciplined and resilient Kiwis side.

Herrera's introduction summed up the kind of quality manager Juan Carlos Osorio can all on. Aside from the Porto ace, Andres Guardado is also a creative influence in the middle, while Jonathan dos Santos can thrive between the midfield and forward lines.

Midfield strength is also a feature of the hosts' squad. Aleksandr Golovin is a classy technician, while Denis Glushakov knows where the goal is. Even so, the undoubted jewel of this team is forward Fedor Smolov.

The 27-year-old scored 23 times in all competitions for FC Krasnodar this past season, per WhoScored.com. Smolov, Glushakov and Golovin could exploit a Mexico defence breached three times through three matches.

Smolov is Russia's focal point in attack.

Still, Mexicohave more strength in depth, and they should make a more talented squad count.

Prediction: Mexico 2-1 Russia

Mexico Overcome Deficit to Beat New Zealand in 2017 Confederations Cup

Raul Jimenez and Oribe Peralta scored as Mexico battled back from 1-0 down to beat New Zealand 2-1 in the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup at the Fisht Stadium in Sochi, Russia on Wednesday.

Chris Wood opened the scoring for New Zealand in the first half, but the Kiwis couldn't hold on and were eliminated.

A win means El Tri have moved on to four points and kept pace with Portugal in Group A.

Mexico started with star striker Javier Hernandez on the bench but could still count on cerebral forward Giovani dos Santos for inspiration in attack, per the tournament's official Twitter feed:

El Tri may have been missing a goal-getter, but prolific Leeds United striker Wood led the line for New Zealand:

It was Wood who had the best chance of the half when he got through one-on-one just after the half-hour mark. However, the 25-year-old couldn't beat Alfredo Talavera in the Mexico goal.

Wood made amends three minutes before the break when he pounced on a mistake in the Mexican defence before sliding the ball past Talavera with aplomb. The Leeds man had scored a rare goal for the Kiwis in this competition:

Wood also achieved a personal milestone at international level, according to Squawka Football:

It was no less than New Zealand deserved for a disciplined and intelligent performance during the opening 45 minutes. Wood and Co. were compact defensively and broke with precision and pace.

BBC Brasil's Tim Vickery was critical of Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio at half-time:

Credit to Osorio, though, he did introduce midfield playmaker Hector Herrera at the break. The Porto pass-master was instrumental in helping El Tri improve on the ball.

It took Mexico just nine minutes after the restart to draw level when Jimenez found the net. OptaJavier noted how Jimenez has been in a rich vein of form for the national side recently:

Peralta made it 2-1 19 minutes later, as El Tri's quality began to tell.

A major flare-up occurred just before the 90th minute when a New Zealand break was disrupted by some cynical fouling. Tensions were high in the ensuring scuffle, and video replay was needed to identify those at the centre of the melee.

Once things calmed down, Mexico couldn't increase their lead in the just over eight minutes of injury time, but they did survive to preserve their advantage, despite the Kiwis hitting the bar.

El Tri have failed to click through two matches but still haven't lost. Osorio's team will be dangerous if they get it together.

Mexico face New Zealand in Group A of the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup at the Fisht Stadium in Sochi, Russia, on Wednesday with both likely needing a win to keep their tournament hopes alive.

The All Whites lost their opener 2-0 to Russia and cannot afford another defeat. Meanwhile, El Tri salvaged a point in a 2-2 draw with Euro 2016 champions Portugal thanks to a stoppage-time Hector Moreno goal.

Mexico will be strong favourites to prevail in Sochi, not least because they sit 78 places ahead of the Kiwis in the FIFA world rankings.

While Mexico boast superior quality in their squad, they cannot afford to be complacent against New Zealand.

The two sides met most recently in a friendly in October 2016 and Mexico narrowly prevailed 2-1.

If Juan Carlos Osorio's side are to earn a comfortable win that will give them the best chance of advancing to the semi-finals, they need to get ahead early.

Fortunately, forwards Carlos Vela and Javier Hernandez both look in decent form and should be able to exploit any weaknesses in the New Zealand defence.

Vela netted an excellent goal against the United States in a FIFA World Cup qualifier ahead of the Confederations Cup.

And Hernandez scored Mexico's first against Portugal, a typically opportunistic finish from Chicharito which took his international tally to 48, per Squawka:

Anthony Hudson's New Zealand side were beaten fairly comfortably by Russia in their opening match, and they will need to be a lot tighter defensively if they are to limit Mexico.

The All Whites' defensive shape was poor against the hosts, and they looked vulnerable to long balls and at set pieces.

Their marking also left plenty to be desired, and they will need to be much sharper to avoid being opened up by the likes of Hernandez and Vela.

Mexico have a decent record at the Confederations Cup having won it in 1999 and reached the last four in 1995 and 2005.

The Portugal match was their toughest group clash on paper and they did well to come away with a point.

A convincing win over New Zealand would set El Tri up brilliantly for their final match against Russia as they look to book their spot in the knockout rounds.

Prediction: Mexico 3-0 New Zealand

Hector Moreno, Mexico Snatch Late Draw vs. Portugal at 2017 Confederations Cup

Hector Moreno scored a stoppage-time equaliser as Mexico battled back to earn a 2-2 draw against Portugal in their Group A opener at the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.

Southampton full-back Cedric Soares thought he had won it for Portugal when he scored on 86 minutes, only for Moreno to earn a point for El Tri late on.

Ricardo Quaresma and Javier Hernandez both scored in the first half of a tight game at the Kazan Arena in Kazan, Russia, on Sunday.

Cristiano Ronaldo skippered an experienced Portugal starting XI also featuring wingers Nani and Quaresma, per FIFA.com. Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen striker Hernandez joined Real Sociedad's Carlos Vela in attack for El Tri.

Ronaldo took time to get going.
Ronaldo took time to get going.

It was PSV Eindhoven midfielder Andres Guardado who put Mexico on the front early on, driving from the middle to probe for gaps and shooting opportunities in the final third.

El Tri were winning the midfield battle, with Villarreal No. 8 Jonathan dos Santos also combining well with Guardado. Yet for all their probing, Mexico struggled to find openings against a resolute Portugal back line early on.

Ronaldo took 21 minutes to pose his first threat, forcing goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa into a smart save after shooting on the rebound when his free-kick was blocked by the wall. Frustration grew for the Real Madrid man when he thought he had created the opening goal, volleying off the crossbar before Pepe put in the rebound, only for the video replay to show offside.

Portugal did finally make it 1-0 on 34 minutes when Quaresma opened their account after being played in by Ronaldo. It was harsh on Mexico who had done most of the running, but Portugal have mastered the art of striking on the break.

The assist from Ronaldo continued the talisman's run as his nation's most prolific source of goals, per Squawka Football:

Portugal were ahead for just eight minutes, though, until Hernandez planted a close-range diving header in on 42 minutes. The clever finish maintained the striker's brilliant form in front of goal for El Tri:

It also meant the former Manchester United man kept up his habit of scoring at a Confederations Cup, per FIFA's official Twitter account:

The second half was short of chances, even though both sides made attacking substitutions. Mexico introduced Giovani dos Santos for Vela, while Portugal swapped Nani for Sporting CP star Gelson Martins.

Quaresma and Dos Santos each went close entering the final 10 minutes, but the match appeared to be headed for a draw. However, Portugal finally broke the deadlock four minutes from time when Cedric turned in from close range to apparently get the UEFA Euro 2016 champions off to a winning start in the group.

Moreno was the late hero for Mexico.
Moreno was the late hero for Mexico.

El Tri weren't finished though, and they duly grabbed a point when AS Roma defender Moreno scored from a corner.

Honours even was probably a fair result between the two most talented teams in Group A.

Mexico Dominates Honduras in Qualifier Action, Remains atop CONCACAF Standings

Mexico maintained a stranglehold on the top spot in Hexagonal qualifying for the 2018 World Cup Thursday with a 3-0 win over Honduras at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.

El Tri (4-1-0) is sitting pretty atop the CONCACAF table with 13 points, while Honduras' World Cup aspirations took a major hit. The Central American hopefuls dropped to 1-1-3 with just four points following the loss.

Sports Illustrated's Planet Futbol provided a complete breakdown of the standings with five Hex games in the books:

As the scoreline indicates, El Tri had the upper hand Thursday night.

Composed and comfortable in front of its home crowd, Mexico dictated the pace and was the clear aggressor throughout the first half.

As a result, Juan Carlos Osorio's side was able to mount goal-scoring chances before finally breaking through in the 34th minute when Oswaldo Alanis headed home a corner kick courtesy of Jonathan dos Santos.

According to soccer scribe Cesar Hernandez, Alanis' tally was key because it helped open things up for Mexico:

And as ESPN FC's Tom Marshall highlighted, seemingly every number worked in El Tri's favor following the first half:

The floodgates proceeded to open in the second half, with Hirving Lozano (63') and Raul Jimenez (66') getting on the board with goals three minutes apart to establish an insurmountable gulf between El Tri and Honduras.

ESPN Stats & Info and Goal.com's Jon Arnold noted Lozano's goal was particularly significant, albeit for different reasons:

With another comfortable win in hand, Mexico will now shift its attention toward Sunday's clash with the United States at Estadio Azteca.

El Tri will undoubtedly be favored in the anticipated clash since it's sitting pretty atop the table and topped the Stars and Stripes 2-1 last time out in November, but Osorio will have to prepare his squad for a Red, White and Blue team that's building confidence after Christian Pulisic notched a brace Thursday night against Trinidad and Tobago.

The good news for Mexico is that it will have the luxury of rolling out a lineup with far more firepower Sunday after Javier Hernandez, Hector Moreno and Marco Fabian were all rested against Honduras.
