WWE basically positioned Monday's Raw Netflix debut as a WrestleMania-level event, yet it felt more like the Super Bowl.

And not in a good way.

While the endless wave of celebrities gobbling up all of the good floor seats and corporate back-patting stunk, nothing personifies the debut's flop quite like The Rock's performance.

Rather than trot out in his Final Boss character, Rock was just...Dwayne Johnson. Board member Dwayne Johnson pining for Hollywood roles, too. He shook hands and yapped it up with Cody Rhodes, even throwing out a Mama Rhodes reference that apparently doesn't mean anything anymore, then hugged and congratulated Roman Reigns as the real Tribal Chief.

Just like that, all of the careful, long-term storytelling and character developments—traits that have defined the Triple H era and spearheaded this golden era—went up in smoke.

These were non-kayfabe, inauthentic exchanges fans could shrug off if they happened at, say, a Hall of Fame event or something. Instead, WWE chose one of the biggest events in the sport's history to...steer away from what makes the sport so great.

There were other problems, too, with Rock just setting the tone right from the jump. WWE went major tone-deaf with the Hulk Hogan segment after plastering his beer company on the new (ugly, to some) ring mat. Actual real wrestling was few and far between with zero in the way of surprising or risky results.

And yes, the matches were great, but a certain other company gets grilled constantly for only focusing on bangers in the ring.

Other odd entertainment choices included...Travis Scott and The Undertaker.

Overall, it's just really hard to see exactly what about that show might entice new fans to come back next week. The three hours felt like six, which didn't help. The show didn't end on a cliffhanger, nor did it dangle big threads unpulled, so were new eyeballs supposed to be wooed by part-timers and retired guys waving and smiling?

The fact that John Cena can come back and rock the mic better than anyone else on the program is, to be blunt, a massive issue laid bare in front of a huge audience.

Once again, it's Rhodes who suffers, too. His so-so title reign is now in limbo and he looks like a dork for being chummy with Rock after vicious things he endured at the hands of Dwayne not that long ago, never mind getting pinned by him. All so he can apparently head into a 'Mania program with Cena.

Make no mistake—flop is a strong word to use. We'll undoubtedly see endless mega-streaming numbers, and the gravitas of it all surely made it feel like a big event for new fans. But that was not the version of Rock standard fans tuned in to see, and it was not the handwaving of continuity anyone wanted. We have to keep it fair—if AEW did something like this, that promotion would get cooked.

Monday night felt like a launching pad for WrestleMania season, a time to really start outlining how things might go. Instead, what could have been a Night 1 main event between CM Punk and Seth Rollins went to waste and Rock nuked feuds with Rhodes and Reigns.

Sure, WWE could walk back the other way in future weeks and months, even attempting to blur lines by having Rock admit he was just playing a bit for shareholders or whatever. But fans aren't stupid—when Rock was having a rough time in Hollywood, he came back motivated with a top storyline. Now that things seem to be getting better for him there again...he's backing out? When WWE didn't need him, last year, he was there, but now that they need him for the Bloodline and/or Rhodes, he's reverting out of character?

But again, Monday night came with expectations that the good stuff would continue. That huge, historic mistake of the sloppy handling of Rhodes surrendering his Royal Rumble win to Rock, only for the company to retract it, was a thing of the past. That sloppy stuff was supposed to be a relic of the cable television era.

Instead, it feels like the streaming debut was more of a warning sign. Triple H was in the post-match presser talking about terms like "shoot" and "work" while storylines went disregarded to the point the promos felt aimed at executives, not fans.

The question now becomes whether this will be a weekly feature on Raw. It's also interesting to think that when SmackDown went to Fox, these sorts of things didn't happen. Yeah, some goofy stuff, like Brock Lesnar squashing Kofi Kingston to appease networks, occurred, but pro wrestling was still pro wrestling.

If Monday night was some weird attempt to shift WWE into being more of a real sport like UFC at the behest of TKO, Netflix or whoever, and these types of programs continue, it will backfire on the company hard.

To put it another way, if this is what the Netflix era and the Rock are cooking, it just doesn't smell all that great.

Becky Lynch's Return Plans for Raw on Netflix Scrapped

WWE fans who were hoping to see Becky Lynch make her long-awaited return during the premiere of Monday Night Raw on Netflix were left disappointed when The Man didn't show up.

A new report from Bodyslam (h/t Steve Carrier of Ringside News) revealed the reason Lynch was left off the show. Lynch was reportedly in Los Angeles for the premiere event and was expected to make an appearance during the Women's World Championship match that saw Rhea Ripley defeat Liv Morgan to win the title.

However, the plans for Lynch's return were scrapped to make room for an appearance by WWE legend The Undertaker, who celebrated with Ripley after her victory in a passing-of-the-torch moment:

Lynch's last appearance in WWE was during the May 27 episode of Raw when she lost to Morgan in a steel cage match for the Women's World Championship. It was reported that he contract with the company expired on June 1 and she became a free agent.

After her hiatus, it appears Lynch was able to reach a new agreement with WWE. The report from Bodyslam added that despite her scrapped return plans for the premiere of Raw on Netflix, she's still expected to be back on WWE programming soon. She will likely play a major role in the buildup to WrestleMania 41.

WWE 2K25 Teased During Raw on Netflix

Fans of WWE's famed 2K video game series got a taste of the next installment during the premiere episode of Monday Night Raw on Netflix.

After Roman Reigns defeated Solo Sikoa in a Tribal Combat match, he was seen talking with Paul Heyman backstage. He told Heyman that he'd celebrate his victory on Jan. 27 before entering a room with the WWE 2K25 logo on the door:

While a release date has yet to be revealed, WWE announced that more details about WWE 2K25 will be unveiled the day after Reigns' celebration.

"WWE 2K returns bigger, bolder, and better than ever in a breakthrough year for the franchise! WWE 2K25 is preparing to charge down the ramp with all the authenticity and action fans love from the best in sports entertainment," a release stated. "Discover game-changing features, iconic Superstars, and more details on January 28th, 2025."

Following the logo reveal on Raw, WWE and Xbox provided a first look at the gameplay with some images on social media:

WWE 2K25 is available to add to your wishlist via PlayStation Store and Microsoft Store. The game will be able to be played on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC (Steam).

CM Punk Teases Rematches vs. John Cena and The Rock

CM Punk defeated Seth Rollins in the main event of Monday Night Raw's premiere on Netflix, and he already has his eyes set on potential future opponents.

After emerging victorious in his first match on Raw in over a decade, Punk was asked during the post-show press conference about his interest in facing former rivals John Cena or The Rock again, and he said he would welcome the opportunity to share the ring with both of them again.

"I think I want gold around my waist, but both of those names come with big, fat paychecks, so I'm not gonna say no to it," Punk said (h/t H. Jenkins of Ringside News). "It could be interesting. I wouldn't say no to it. I mean, to the big, high-pressure money situations—that's when I come alive. I think I owe The Rock, I definitely owe John. I passed John Cena in the hallway. He looked a little tired. I think he needs to go to sleep."

Punk's win against Rollins indicates that he will be in the main-event picture going forward as WrestleMania 41 draws nearer.

Both Cena and The Rock made appearances during the star-studded premiere event. Cena is embarking on his retirement tour this year, so it's not out of the realm of possibility for him and Punk to cross paths again.

WrestleMania 41 Plans for The Rock Reportedly Unclear

After making his in-ring return last year at WrestleMania 40, it reportedly isn't yet known what The Rock will do at WrestleMania 41.

According to Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter (h/t WrestlePurists), original plans called for The Rock to face Cody Rhodes at WrestleMania 41, however, different plans are now in place for The American Nightmare.

Meltzer noted that WWE is moving toward Rhodes vs. the returning John Cena on the Grandest Stage of Them All, leaving The Rock without a clear direction.

Despite that, Meltzer added that there is a "belief" within WWE that The Rock will be part of WrestleMania in some way.

The Rock returned to the WWE fold in January 2024 after becoming part of the TKO board of directors, and while it initially looked like he was going to face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania, he instead turned heel and aligned himself with Reigns against Rhodes and Seth Rollins.

In the main event of Night 1 of WrestleMania 40, The Rock and Reigns beat Rhodes and Rollins in a tag team match, but Rhodes went on to defeat Reigns for the WWE Championship in the main event of Night 2.

The next night on Raw, The Rock and Rhodes had a confrontation, and Rock seemed to foreshadow a future match between them.

Although there has been no confirmation that The Final Boss will be on the first episode of Raw on Netflix on Monday, but Meltzer said there is a "good shot" of it happening.

Should The Rock appear, the plans for him leading up to WrestleMania 41 could become much clearer.

Cena vs. Rhodes Reportedly in Works for WrestleMania 41

John Cena is set to embark on his final year as an in-ring competitor, and there are seemingly already some huge plans in place.

According to Meltzer (h/t WrestlePurists), Cena vs. Cody Rhodes is scheduled for WrestleMania 41, which suggests Cena could potentially win his third career Royal Rumble match and challenge for the WWE Championship.

Cena is currently tied with Ric Flair for the most career world title reigns with 16, but beating Rhodes at WrestleMania would give him the record all to himself.

Per Fightful Select (h/t Felix Upton of Ringside News), WWE is going to "very heavily" involve Cena in major storylines this year with an eye toward giving him a proper sendoff.

Cena announced last year at Money in the Bank that 2025 would be his final year as an active wrestler. He noted that he would compete at his final Royal Rumble and WrestleMania as part of that run.

Given his status as one of the all-time greats and biggest stars in WWE history, it seemed likely from the time of his announcement that the 47-year-old Cena would be a big-time factor in 2025.

A match against Rhodes on the Grandest Stage of Them All would be significant for many reasons, including the fact that Rhodes is WWE's biggest current star along with Roman Reigns.

Also, Cena and Rhodes are good friends outside the ring, so the match would undoubtedly be meaningful to both of them.

Cena is being advertised for Raw's debut episode on Netflix, and it seems likely that he will announce his intentions on the show.

Matt Hardy Talks Possible Hardy Boyz WWE Appearance in 2025

With WWE and TNA entering into a working relationship over the past several months, Matt Hardy has his sights set on a WWE appearance in 2025.

Speaking this week on his Extreme Life of Matt Hardy podcast (h/t Subhojeet Mukherjee of Ringside News), the former WWE star discussed a potential return to his old stomping grounds, saying: "I think that the Hardys are going to have a match in WWE in 2025. I don't know when that would happen, and I don't know where it would happen, but I feel pretty good about it."

Matt and his brother, Jeff Hardy, first rose to prominence in WWE as the Hardy Boyz. They officially signed with WWE in 1998 and teamed together until 2005 when they went their separate ways and embarked on singles careers.

After Jeff left WWE in 2009 and Matt departed in 2010, they both enjoyed success in multiple other wrestling companies, including TNA and ROH.

The Hardy Boyz made their surprise return to WWE at WrestleMania 33 in 2017, and after teaming together for a time, they were separated again. Matt left WWE in 2019 and signed with AEW in 2020, and Jeff joined him in 2022.

Jeff's DUI arrest in June 2022 and subsequent suspension stalled the momentum of the team, though, and they never got back on track even once Jeff returned.

Both Matt and Jeff left AEW for TNA last year, an they are the reigning TNA world tag team champions.

Given that Matt and Jeff won nine tag team titles together as a legendary duo in WWE and that WWE and TNA have been engaging in a talent exchange, it would make sense for the Hardy Boyz to cross over at some point.

Both Matt and Jeff would be prime candidates to enter the Royal Rumble as surprises in February, and if that happens, perhaps it could lead to them making even more appearances and having additional matches with WWE in the future.

WWE Rumors on Cody Rhodes' Raw Status, John Cena vs. Logan Paul, Randy Orton's Return

Rhodes to Reportedly Split Time Between Raw, SmackDown

WWE champion Cody Rhodes reportedly may be featured on both Raw and SmackDown for the foreseeable future.

According to Sean Ross Sapp on the Fightful Select podcast (h/t Steve Carrier of Ringside News), Netflix requested Rhodes' presence on Raw, and it's "not unreasonable to believe" that WWE will want him to continue appearing on SmackDown as well.

Raw is making its Netflix debut next week, and it will seemingly be an all-hands-on-deck situation with stars from both Raw and SmackDown appearing, as well as potentially some legends.

Along with Roman Reigns, Rhodes is WWE's biggest star currently, and it makes sense from the perspective of both WWE and Netflix to have him on Raw in order to get the switch to Netflix off and running.

Also, since the Royal Rumble is about a month away, it is easy to explain Rhodes appearing on both brands, as Superstars routinely cross over during Royal Rumble season.

Rhodes has been the face of SmackDown in recent months and the WWE Championship has been the main title on the blue brand with the World Heavyweight Championship leading the way on Raw.

The American Nightmare is embroiled in a heated rivalry with Kevin Owens, and it is leading to a ladder match between them for the WWE title at Royal Rumble.

Continuing the Rhodes vs. Owens rivalry on Raw in addition to the time it gets on SmackDown will get even more eyes on the feud, plus Cody's presence on the red brand could potentially help set up whatever is next for him after Royal Rumble and leading up to WrestleMania 41.

WWE Reportedly Interested in Cena vs. Paul Match

There is reportedly some support within WWE regarding a match between John Cena and Logan Paul during Cena's final year as a wrestler in 2025.

According to WrestleVotes on Backstage Pass (h/t Subhojeet Mukherjee of Ringside News), there is "interest" from Cena and Paul and from WWE as a whole to make the match happen, although it won't occur at WrestleMania 41.

WrestleVotes also addressed speculation regarding Cena and Paul having a match on the debut episode of Raw on Netflix next week after the official announcement that Cena will be on the show.

It was noted by WrestleVotes that Cena vs. Paul will not happen on next week's Raw since WWE would want to have plenty of build and hype prior to a bout of that magnitude.

Cena announced earlier this year that he is retiring from in-ring competition at the end of 2025, meaning the upcoming year will be his swan song.

He has already revealed his intention to compete at Royal Rumble and WrestleMania 41, plus Cena will make many other appearances and have several more matches over the course of the year.

Given Paul's mainstream popularity and the fact that he has quickly developed into one of WWE's top stars, he would be a sensible opponent for Cena at some point in 2025.

As of now, it looks like Cena will simply take part in a promo segment next week on Raw, although it could set the table for what he intends to do at Royal Rumble and WrestleMania.

Orton Reportedly Expected to Return By Royal Rumble

Randy Orton has been out of action since getting attacked by Kevin Owens in November, but his return his reportedly on the horizon.

According to WrestleVotes on Backstage Pass (h/t Mukherjee), Orton will be back by the Royal Rumble on Feb. 1 at the latest, and possibly even before it.

On the Nov. 8 episode of SmackDown, KO and Orton got into a brawl, which ended with Owens shockingly hitting Orton with a piledriver. The Viper was then taken out of the arena on a stretcher with Cody Rhodes by his side.

It was a shocking moment due to the fact that the piledriver has been a banned move in WWE for many years, but Owens has since made it part of his character, as he hit Rhodes with a package piledriver after their match on Saturday Night's Main Event.

With Rhodes and Owens set to face off in a ladder match at Royal Rumble, it is easy to envision Orton returning and interfering on Cody's behalf in order to get revenge on KO.

Additionally, WWE always wants as much star power as possible in the Royal Rumble match itself, and since Orton is a two-time Rumble winner, he would be an ideal entrant either as a surprise or a pre-announced member of the match.

Orton also figures to be part of a major match at WrestleMania as he usually is, and that match could be against Owens, especially if Orton costs him the WWE title.

John Cena's Farewell Tour Includes International Dates

Two weeks away from the start of John Cena's final year in WWE, the 16-time world champion is going to be traveling all over the world with the promotion in 2025.

Appearing on the Sports Media Pod with Austin Karp and Mollie Cahillane (h/t Steve Carrier of Ringside News), WWE executive vice president Chris Legentil confirmed Cena will be taking on a full-time traveling schedule that includes international events.

"He's gonna do a full year-long tour with us. And that's gonna be worldwide," Legentil said. "We think that the opportunity for the people to see John Cena one last time all around the world is going to be quite powerful."

Cena made a cameo appearance at Money in the Bank on July 6 to announce that he would be returning to the ring for an extended run in 2025, but that it would also be his final year as a wrestler.

WWE has already confirmed that Cena's first appearance will be on the Jan. 6 episode of Raw that marks the show's debut on Netflix. That show will likely serve as the jumping off point for whatever the plan will be for him going into WrestleMania season.

Even though next year will be the end of Cena's in-ring career, he's doing everything possible to make sure fans all over the world will have a chance to see him compete at least one more time before he hangs up his boots.

Big E Still Not Cleared to Return

Despite returning to WWE television on Dec. 2 for the New Day's 10th anniversary celebration, Big E is not ready to return to the ring.

Appearing on The Mike Broomhead Show (h/t Carrier), Big E confirmed he still hasn't been medically cleared to compete though he is happy with how his recovery from a broken neck has gone.

"I broke my neck, two and a half years ago, in three places, including my C1 in two places. I still haven't been cleared," the former WWE champion said. "Thankfully, I feel great and don't have any issues, nothing like that. Didn't need surgery. I was in a hard collar for three months. There are very real risks."

The injury occurred during a tag match on SmackDown with Big E and Kofi Kingston taking on Sheamus and Ridge Holland on March 11, 2022. Holland grabbed Big E for an overhead belly-to-belly suplex on the outside, but the timing was off an Big E landed on his head.

It's unclear if Big E will ever wrestle again. He revealed during a media scrum prior to SummerSlam 2023 that doctors have told him their recommendation would be that he not wrestle anymore.

E's appearance with Kingston and Xavier Woods for the New Day's anniversary resulted in his former partners blaming him for abandoning them before kicking him out of the group.

Charlotte Flair Nearing Return

After rumors about a potential return at Saturday Night's Main Event didn't pan out, Charlotte Flair is on the brink of coming back to WWE.

Per PWInsider.com (h/t Carrier), Flair is "on the cusp of officially returning to the ring" with the creative team planning her reintroduction.

The Queen stoked the flames about a comeback earlier this week by posting a picture with NXT star Lainey Reed and thanking her for working with her in the ring.

Flair has been out of action since suffering a serious knee injury during a SmackDown match with Asuka on Dec. 8, 2023. She was diagnosed with a torn ACL, MCL and meniscus due to a botched spot on the top turnbuckle that resulted in her knee getting tangled up in the ropes.

The two obvious dates for Flair's return are the Raw debut on Netflix, which is being loaded up with stars and matches that would normally headline a premium live event, or as a surprise entrant in the Royal Rumble.

WWE used the latter plan last year with Liv Morgan, who entered the women's Rumble at No. 30 after missing six months with a shoulder injury.

Flair will almost certainly be put into a key position upon her return. She will also add another top star to the women's division on SmackDown going into the new year.
