MLB Rumors: Marlins 'Close' on Tanner Scott Trade; Josh Bell on Block Despite Waivers

Jul 28, 2024

The Miami Marlins may not be done selling at the 2024 MLB Trade Deadline.

Jim Bowden of the Athletic reported that the Marlins "are close" to trading reliever Tanner Scott and are "listening" to offers centered around first baseman Josh Bell.

Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported that Miami has waived Bell, but he could remain with the team and be a trade candidate if he goes unclaimed.

This comes after the team dealt Jazz Chisholm to the New York Yankees on Saturday. Miami received three prospects in the deal and will likely look for similar returns on any trades for Scott and Bell.

Scott earned his first All-Star nod in 2024 and has been dominant in the Marlins bullpen. He has a 6-5 record with a 1.18 ERA in 45.2 innings in 2024 and will hit the open market following the season.

He could be an excellent addition to a contender's bullpen and combining him with Bell could be appealing as well. The first baseman is hitting .239/.303/.396 with 14 home runs and 49 RBIs.

Miami is 39-66 and in last place in the NL East. Any hopes at playoff contention are gone and the franchise appears headed towards another rebuild despite cracking the postseason in 2023.

Bowden reported that the Boston Red Sox, Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees are all contenders for Scott. Baltimore would be a homecoming for the reliever as he was with the franchise from 2017-2021, while Boston and New York would hope to acquire him to bolster their bullpens and avoid falling behind other foes in the American League.

The 2024 MLB Trade Deadline is set for July 30 at 6 p.m. ET.

MLB Rumors: Jazz Chisholm Jr.'s Marlins Trade Market Limited by Injury, 'Brashness'

The trade landscape for Miami Marlins star Jazz Chisholm Jr. appears to be lukewarm, according to ESPN's Jeff Passan.

Passan reported Tuesday that "fears about his ability to stay healthy and brashness have limited his market."

Chisholm's 97 appearances this year are already tied for his second-most in a single season. A stress fracture in his back ended his 2022 campaign prematurely before he battled through turf toe in 2023, combining to play 157 games between the two years.

Passan's usage of the word "brashness" is another way in which Chisholm's reputation precedes him.

The 26-year-old hasn't been afraid to display his personality on the field and is equally willing to speak his mind off it.

During a March appearance on The Pivot Podcast, he had some choice words for former Marlins teammate Miguel Rojas and other vets on the squad. He said they contributed to a toxic clubhouse and that the "worst three years of probably my life" were his first three in the majors.

Rojas pushed back on the characterization of him made by Chisholm and said holding younger players accountable is part of the duties for more experienced players on the roster.

Opinions of Chisholm around MLB seem to be mixed as well. In an anonymous player poll published by The Athletic in June, he was the highest vote-getter to the question of the most overrated player in baseball.

Another factor working against Miami in terms of Chisholm's trade value is that his performance has yet to match what he did in the first half of 2022. He's batting .249 with a .408 slugging percentage and a 102 OPS+ this year, and that's right about where he was in 2023, when he had a .250/.304/.457 slash line and a 100 OPS+.

Craig Mish of the Miami Herald reported on July 8 there was a "growing belief" that Chisholm will get moved before the trade deadline, though he echoed Passan's newest reporting.

"Believe it or not this is the first time there has been genuine interest in Chisholm as injuries, and his personality have kept other clubs wondering what they would be getting in return," Mish wrote. "It looks like Miami is very much listening, and he could certainly help a team in need with his power/speed combination."

Miami is in last place in the National League East at 35-65. The franchise's short-term outlook is bleak, so trading a notable player who has two more years of team control could be a great asset play.

Based on the reporting, what the Marlins could get back for Chisholm might nonetheless be a little underwhelming for a player with his raw tools and defensive versatility.

Marlins' Dane Myers Suffers Fractured Ankle Injury Kicking Door After Ejection

Miami Marlins outfielder Dane Myers is heading for a spell on the injured list thanks to an unfortunate situation.

Myers was ejected from last Saturday's 10-6 loss to the Cincinnati Reds for arguing over a checked-swing call in the eighth inning. He told reporters Sunday he suffered a fractured left ankle as a result of kicking a clubhouse door out of frustration following his ejection.

The Miami Herald's Craig Mish reported the 28-year-old could miss six to eight weeks due to the fracture.

The injury interrupts what has been a solid season from Myers. Through 40 games, he has a .265/.337/.422 slash line along with 14 RBI and four stolen bases in five attempts. His 0.7 WAR are tied for fourth among Marlins position players, and his 113 wRC+ ranks second behind Xavier Edwards, per FanGraphs.

Myers made his season debut on April 28 and has steadily become a regular contributor in Miami's starting lineup. Manager Skip Schumaker reflected on how his usage level was going to continue and perhaps even increase with Jazz Chisholm Jr. getting shifted back into the infield.

Myers will now join the list of MLB players to get injured in odd circumstances, while this adds to an already difficult campaign for the 33-63 Marlins.

MLB Trade Rumors: Yankees, Marlins Discussed Jazz Chisholm Jr. Deal; Mariners Linked

The New York Yankees have reportedly discussed a trade for Miami Marlins star Jazz Chisholm Jr., per the New York Post's Jon Heyman.

Heyman also noted that the Seattle Mariners have also been linked to Chisholm.

"The Yankees have discussed Jazz Chisholm Jr., the Marlins' talented outfielder-turned-infielder," Heyman wrote. "The extent of the interest is unknown, but Chisholm likely would play mostly infield, a Yankees need.

"The Mariners are another possible landing spot for Chisholm."

The report comes ahead of the July 30 trade deadline as the Yankees look to bolster their roster to make a World Series run.

Chisholm, 26, has 11 home runs, 41 RBI and a .256 batting average through 89 games this year, on track to record career highs in all those categories. The center fielder, who has been playing second base this year, could help New York fill some holes in what is already a strong roster and help it continue to surge.

The trade rumors come as the Marlins seem to be heading toward a rebuild. They traded two-time batting champ Luis Arráez to the San Diego Padres for a handful of prospects earlier this season, the first move towards rebuilding, and could continue making moves ahead of the deadline.

Heyman reported in June that several teams, including the Yankees, are interested in reliever Tanner Scott, so he could be another piece on the move before the trade deadline.

Miami currently sits at the bottom of the NL East at 32-60 and has virtually no chance of reaching the postseason. Given their current position, building for the future could be the best plan of action for the Marlins this year.

MLB Rumors: 'Growing Belief' Jazz Chisholm Jr. Will Be Traded by Marlins at Deadline

Miami Marlins outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. is off to the hottest start of his career, but his time with the team reportedly could be coming to an end soon.

According to Craig Mish of the Miami Herald, "there is a growing belief Chisholm will be traded" by this season's July 30 trade deadline.

Through 87 games, Chisholm has career highs of a .255 batting average and a .326 on-base percentage. He's hit 10 home runs and notched 40 RBI, well on pace to surpass his career highs of 19 homers and 53 RBi if he can stay healthy.

Mish went on to explain that Chisholm's production at the top of Miami's lineup has erased previous trepidations from interested teams, and the Marlins are open to offers.

"Believe it or not this is the first time there has been genuine interest in Chisholm as injuries, and his personality have kept other clubs wondering what they would be getting in return," Mish stated. "It looks like Miami is very much listening, and he could certainly help a team in need with his power/speed combination."

Mish named the Seattle Mariners as "a club to watch" if the Marlins choose to deal Chisholm. He also reported that the Kansas City Royals and Pittsburgh Pirates "could have interest" in the 26-year-old. It was noted that teams out of contention could also be in the mix for Chisholm.

At 32-58, the Marlins are sitting in last place in the NL East and will likely miss the playoffs for the third time in the last four years. It could be best for Miami to use its top trade pieces like Chisholm to recoup assets and start building for next year.

Tim Anderson DFA'd by Marlins; Hitting .214 Since Signing $5M Contract in Free Agency

The Miami Marlins are parting ways with Tim Anderson four months after he signed a one-year, $5 million deal with the club in free agency.

Per Craig Mish of the Miami Herald, Anderson has been designated for assignment by the Marlins.

The move will put Anderson on waivers for all 30 teams to claim. If he goes unclaimed in seven days, the Marlins can trade him to any club or release him.

Anderson was signed by the Marlins on Feb. 24, four days after the team's first full-squad workout in spring training. He became a free agent after the Chicago White Sox declined his $14 million option for 2024 in November.

Chicago made the decision after Anderson had one of the worst seasons of any player in MLB during the 2023 campaign. He hit .245/.286/.296 with one homer in 123 games and was one of 12 players to post a negative FanGraphs' wins above replacement (minus-0.2).

Things have only gotten worse for Anderson in 2024. The 31-year-old was hitting .214/.237/.226 with three extra-base hits in 234 at-bats with the Marlins. His minus-1.2 fWAR is the third-worst mark in MLB out of 183 players with at least 240 plate appearances.

It has been a steep fall for Anderson, who was one of the best players in the AL during his peak with the White Sox. He finished seventh in AL MVP voting and won a Silver Slugger award in 2020. He was named to back-to-back All-Star teams in 2021 and 2022.

Over four seasons from 2019 to 2022, Anderson hit .318/.347/.474 in 374 games. He ranked seventh among all shortstops in fWAR during that span, sandwiched between Corey Seager and Fernando Tatis Jr.

There might be a team that would be willing to take a chance on rehabbing Anderson's game, but there's now a significant sample size to suggest he may not be capable of holding down a roster spot in the big leagues.

If Anderson is able to land with another team, he will likely have to start in the minors and show he can hit pitching at that level before getting another shot at the MLB level.

MLB Trade Rumors: Marlins' Tanner Scott Eyed by Yankees, Dodgers, Phillies, Orioles

A handful of teams are reportedly eyeing Miami Marlins reliever Tanner Scott, per the New York Post's Jon Heyman.

According to Heyman, the New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies and Baltimore Orioles are among the teams interested in Scott, though Heyman noted "many others" are also interested in him.

Scott, who has spent the past three seasons with the Marlins, has recorded 36 strikeouts and 11 saves across 34 games this season. Through 35 innings pitched, he has a 1.54 ERA, which is good for the second-best number of his eight-year career.

Scott has emerged as one of baseball's top closers this season, and a handful of contenders could benefit from adding him to the bullpen. The Phillies, Dodgers, Orioles and Yankees lead the majors in team ERA, but bringing in a pitcher who is guaranteed to get swings and misses in late innings would be huge as the four teams look to compete for a World Series.

Scott has been one of the only bright spots for a struggling Marlins team this year. Miami is currently sitting at 29-52 on the year and has virtually no chance of reaching the postseason.

Given their current situation, the Marlins could consider trading away Scott in exchange for future pieces. They already traded second baseman Luis Arraez to the San Diego Padres for a handful of prospects, and Scott could be the next Marlin on the move.

Marlins' Chisholm Jr. Among Players Seen as Most Likely to Be Traded by MLB Execs

Miami Marlins outfielder Jazz Chisholm Jr. is reportedly seen as the most likely position player to be traded before the July 30 deadline.

Jim Bowden of The Athletic polled more than 35 executives who pegged Chisholm as the top trade target on the market, with the San Francisco Giants and Philadelphia Phillies being two potential destinations.

Chisholm, 26, is on pace for arguably the best season of his MLB career. He's hitting .264/.330/.438 with 10 home runs and 37 runs batted in, adding 14 steals in 19 attempts. If he's able to continue this pace, Chisholm may pull off his first career 20-20 season after narrowly missing the mark in 2021 and 2023.

The Marlins have Chisholm under team control through 2026, and he's making just $2.6 million this season, so making a move isn't urgent. However, Miami may be able to maximize the value of Chisholm's return by trading him now—all while avoiding the more expensive years of arbitration.

Miami currently has the third-worst record in MLB at 28-51 and has no signs of improving any time soon. The franchise shockingly made the playoffs last season but regressed to the mean hard after not making any moves to improve the roster over the winter.

Miami's farm system also ranks among the worst in baseball, so the only way for a long-term improvement will be to sell off players already on the roster. Chisholm isn't the type of talent who will get more than one blue-chip prospect, but it's better than the complete lack of promise the Marlins have now.

MLB Rumors: Marlins Plan to Trade Josh Bell; Realize They 'Have to Eat' $16M Contract

The Miami Marlins are reportedly planning to trade first baseman Josh Bell, but it will cost them most of the $16 million remaining on his contract, per USA Today's Bob Nightengale.

"The Marlins plan to trade first baseman Josh Bell but realize they will have to eat most of his remaining $16 million contract," Nightengale wrote.

Bell, who is in his ninth season in the majors, has recorded a .236 batting average, collecting 62 hits, seven home runners, 31 RBI and 27 runs. If a deal gets done, it would send him to his fifth team in the last two seasons.

After beginning his career with the Pittsburgh Pirates, Bell has been with the Washington Nationals, San Diego Padres, Cleveland Guardians and Marlins since 2022. Jon Heyman of the New York Post listed the Pirates, Houston Astros and Minnesota Twins as possible teams to make a move for Bell.

One of the worst teams in the National League, the Marlins are sitting at 23-47 on the year and have virtually no chance of reaching the postseason.

Given its current position, Miami has seemingly begun preparing for the future. The Marlins traded Luis Arraez in May before dealing right-handed pitcher Darren McCaughan a few weeks later. Miami got a handful of pieces from the Padres in return for Arraez, and they could likely pick up a few more for Bell.

MLB Trade Rumors: Marlins' Tanner Scott Interests Yankees, Dodgers, Phillies, More

Miami Marlins left-handed closer Tanner Scott has several potential suitors ahead of the July 30 trade deadline.

According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, the Baltimore Orioles, New York Yankees, Los Angeles Dodgers, and Philadelphia Phillies all have "interest" in Scott as a possible trade target.

The 29-year-old has been one of the few bright spots for Miami in 2024, accumulating a 5-4 record to go along with a 1.30 ERA. He's racked up eight saves, striking out 30 batters in 27.2 innings of work.

Scott has improved his play even further as of late, as he hasn't allowed an earned run since April 14. For contending teams that are looking to bolster their bullpen and prepare for a potential World Series push, trading for the lefty seems like a no-brainer.

After Scott won his arbitration case against the Marlins on Feb. 17, he'll enter free agency once the 2024 season concludes. With Miami getting off to a dismal 23-44 start to the season, the front office will likely search for some assets in return for the lefty instead of watching him possibly leave in the winter.

While Philadelphia has jumped out to a hot start to the season with a record of 46-21, the team could use an extra reliever such as Scott for a postseason run. Although the Phillies' team bullpen ERA of 3.59 ranks No. 10 in the MLB, it's currently the second-lowest mark among division-leading teams this year (via MLB.com).

As the Marlins are trending towards a losing season, Scott may find himself on a contending team once the trade deadline passes.
