Arch Manning's Electric Texas Spring Game Performance Has Fans Hyped for QB's Future

Ahead of his second season at the University of Texas, quarterback Arch Manning lit it up in Saturday's annual Orange-White spring game.

Manning, who played on the White team along with Texas starting quarterback Quinn Ewers, was nearly perfect in a 35-34 loss for the White team, going 19-of-25 for 355 yards with three touchdowns and one interception.

The nephew of legendary NFL quarterbacks Peyton and Eli Manning led five scoring drives Saturday, including a 75-yard dime to wide receiver DeAndre Moore on his first play from scrimmage:

Manning, who was 247Sports' No. 1 overall prospect in the 2023 recruiting class, also showcased his ability to work the middle of the field, hitting running Jaydon Blue for a 29-yard strike and his second touchdown of the first half:

While Manning had 191 yards and two scores at halftime, he wasn't done, as he led another touchdown drive early in the third quarter, punctuated by a rushing score from running back CJ Baxter.

It seemed likely that head coach Steve Sarkisian would be satisfied with the performance and content with Manning watching the rest of the game from the sidelines, but he was given the opportunity to lead the White team to a potential come-from-behind win.

Manning delivered by linking up with wide receiver Isaiah Bond for his second 75-yard touchdown pass of the day with just over three minutes remaining:

It seemed likely that the touchdown pass to Bond would be the game-winner, but freshman quarterback Trey Owens put an exclamation point on a great day of his own, throwing a go-ahead touchdown pass to wideout Ryan Wingo with 31 seconds remaining.

Much of the talk coming out of the spring game will be about Manning, but Owens was excellent in his own right with 228 yards and three touchdowns.

Manning's only blemish came on what amounted to a Hail Mary to end the game, as his deep pass bounced off his receiver's hands and was intercepted:

University of Texas and college football fans were blown away by Manning's performance Saturday, prompting plenty of posts on X about his bright future with the Longhorns:

https://twitter.com/atm_marc9/status/1781773042974171440

Manning arrived in Austin, Texas, last year with a ton of hype surrounding him, but he struggled in the 2023 spring game and barely played during the 2023 season.

Texas was able to keep Manning on the bench for nearly the entirety of the campaign since Quinn Ewers delivered by completing 69.0 percent of his passes for 3,479 yards, 22 touchdowns and six picks.

Ewers also led the Longhorns to a Big 12 title in their final year in the conference before joining the SEC, as well as a College Football Playoff berth.

While Ewers struggled in limited action Saturday, throwing a 33-yard pick-six to defensive tackle Alfred Collins on a batted pass, the fact that he played so little suggests that he is entrenched as the starter to open the 2024 season.

However, Sarkisian has an elite talent in Manning behind him, and after watching him go off in the spring game, it is possible he will have Ewers on a shorter leash than he would have last season.

Given that Ewers lost some elite offensive talent from last year's team, including wide receivers Adonai Mitchell and Xavier Worthy, running back Jonathon Brooks and tight end Ja'Tavion Sanders, it isn't outside the realm of possibility that he could get off to a slow start.

If that happens, there will undoubtedly be calls from a vocal portion of the Texas fanbase to play Manning, and they were likely emboldened by his showing in the Orange-White game.

Texas QB Quinn Ewers Signs NIL Endorsement Deal with Private Jet Company Nicholas Air

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers inked an NIL deal with private jet company Nicholas Air, becoming the second player in NCAA history with such a deal.

Ewers joins Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart in the Nicholas Air family.

"I'm fired up for my new partnership with Nicholas Air," Ewers said in a statement. "It is a first-class organization and a perfect match for my travel needs. Their attention to detail and commitment to high-level service for their Members is second to none. Proud to represent their brand."

No financial terms were announced as part of the deal. In the press release, the company said Ewers will work with Nicholas Air on "various marketing initiatives, promotional campaigns and community engagements," while also having access to their fleet of private jets.

Ewers threw for 3,479 yards and 22 touchdowns against six interceptions last year, his second as Texas' primary starting quarterback. The Longhorns reached the College Football Playoff for the first time before losing to Washington in a 37-31 thriller in the semifinals.

Rather than enter his name in the NFL draft, where he could have been a second- or third-round pick, Ewers returned to Texas for his junior season. He's slated to be on the shortlist of Heisman candidates for the 2024 campaign and could play himself into first-round consideration with a big year.

Quinn Ewers Gets Rave Reviews at Texas Pro Day; QB Among Top 2025 NFL Draft Prospects

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers opted to remain with the Longhorns for another season and not declare for the 2024 NFL draft, but he still worked out at the program's pro day on Wednesday.

Ewers, one of the top 2025 draft prospects, spent his afternoon throwing to the likes of wide receivers Adonai Mitchell and Xavier Worthy in front of numerous NFL scouts and three head coaches, including Miami Dolphins boss Mike McDaniel.

Mitchell and Worthy both declared for the 2024 draft and could be selected in the first round.

While both receivers impressed, Ewers' performance on Wednesday could do himself some favors in terms of getting on the radar of NFL scouts next year as he drew great reviews for his performance:

Ewers initially committed to Ohio State before transferring to Texas ahead of the 2022 season.

The 21-year-old had a solid 2023 season with the Longhorns, leading the program to the College Football Playoff, where it suffered a 37-31 loss to the Washington Huskies in the Sugar Bowl.

Ewers completed 69 percent of his passes for 3,479 yards and 22 touchdowns against six interceptions in 12 games last season, in addition to rushing for 75 yards and five scores.

Ewers' return to Texas will have Steve Sarkisian's program among the top in the nation once again, and the expanded 12-team playoff means there's a good chance the Longhorns will be competing for a title in 2024.

A strong 2024 season will only improve Ewers' draft stock in a class that is also expected to include Colorado's Shedeur Sanders, Penn State's Drew Allar and Georgia's Carson Beck.

That said, one NFL scout also told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler and Pete Thamel last month that he believes there's a big drop-off in quarterback talent between the 2024 and 2025 draft classes.

"It won't be anything close to this year," the scout said.

The 2024 quarterback class includes the likes of Caleb Williams, Drake Maye, Jayden Daniels, Bo Nix, J.J. McCarthy and Michael Penix Jr.

BROAD: 10'1"

POSITIVES

— Good size for an NFL linebacker.

— Shows an understanding of when to shoot gaps versus zone runs to get unblocked tackles for loss or near the line of scrimmage.

— Decent speed when crashing downhill.

— Fluid hips and fast enough to carry tight ends on vertical routes in man coverage.

NEGATIVES

— Lacks strength and has shorter arms that limit his extension and ability to stack and shed as a run defender.

— Has a habit of overpursuing on the back side of gap runs.

— Subpar lateral movement skills. Often stumbles when changing directions.

— Questionable awareness in zone coverage. Often leaves receivers open in his area and doesn't read the quarterback's eyes well to anticipate throws.

2023 STATISTICS

— 14 G, 101 TOT, 10.5 TFL, 1 SK, 2 INT, 2 PD, 1 FF

NOTES

— Born Nov. 28, 2001

— 3-star recruit in the 2020 class, per 247Sports

— No major injuries

OVERALL

Jaylan Ford is a highly decorated and highly productive linebacker. The two-time first-team All-Big 12 selection had 220 total tackles over the last two years combined. He certainly looks the part of an NFL linebacker at 6'2" and 240 pounds, which is big for the modern version of the position.

Ford has decent instincts against zone runs and the speed to shoot gaps and get unblocked tackles near the line of scrimmage. However, he struggles to take on blocks and hold his ground against offensive linemen and good blocking tight ends. His strength is an issue, but he's already full-framed, so he might be tapped out here. Also, his shorter arms will make it difficult for him to get much extension on blocks, even with more strength.

In coverage, the Texas product has fluid hips and enough linear speed to stay in phase versus tight ends in man coverage. But his awareness in zone coverage isn't consistent, as he'll often leave pass-catchers wide open in his area as the middle hook defender and doesn't read the quarterback's eyes well.

Overall, Ford's linear speed and size can help him contribute on special teams, and he has good enough instincts to serve as a backup linebacker in the NFL.

Report: Arch Manning Waiting Until He's Texas QB1 Before Opting into CFB Video Game

Texas quarterback Arch Manning was not among the more than 10,000 college football players who opted into having their name and likeness included in EA Sports' College Football 25 video game, per ESPN's Mark Schlabach.

Manning, who served as the backup to Quinn Ewers this past season, reportedly wanted to wait until "he was the guy" before appearing in the franchise, a source told Schlabach.

The rising sophomore was one of the most hyped recruits in recent memory and was the top overall prospect in the Class of 2023, according to 247Sports' Composite Rankings.

But he was the Longhorns' third-string quarterback this past season behind Ewers and Maalik Murphy and likely will serve as the backup to the former yet again in the 2024 season.

Ewers technically has eligibility for two more college seasons, though he likely will declare for the NFL draft after the 2024 campaign if he builds on his very solid 2023 (3,479 yards, 22 touchdowns, six interceptions, 69.0 completion percentage).

If Manning doesn't win the starting job this upcoming season and Ewers decides to stay with Texas through 2025, the nephew of Peyton and Eli Manning would have a big decision on his hands—stick around as a potential backup yet again, or transfer to a school where he would be the starter.

NIL considerations seemingly won't factor into the situation. Schlabach reported that the young Manning has been "reluctant to do NIL deals, despite a robust market for his name, image and likeness, as well. His only NIL deal last year was an exclusive trading card partnership with Panini America that included a charitable auction."

As for College Football 25, EA Sports has offered athletes who opt in $600 and a free copy of the game. The popular gaming franchise is returning after an 11-year hiatus following several lawsuits regarding the use of player name, image and likeness rights. With players now permitted to sign NIL deals, the game is making its much-anticipated return.

Ewers is one of the sport's prominent players who have agreed to appear in the game, joining stars like Colorado's two-way dynamo Travis Hunter, Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe and Georgia quarterback Carson Beck, among others.

Report: Texas' Arch Manning Will Not Opt into EA Sports College Football 25

Texas quarterback Arch Manning reportedly will not opt into EA Sports College Football 25, per OrangeBloods' Anwar Richardson.

According to Richardson, Manning wants to keep his focus on the field.

The game, set to release this summer, will feature all 134 FBS teams. EA announced that over 10,000 athletes have already opted to be featured in the game, and athletes who opt in will receive at least $600 plus a free copy of the game.

Quinn Ewers, Texas' 2023 starter and the expected starting quarterback next season, has already opted in, so Longhorn fans will at least have one of their favorite quarterbacks available. Ewers had 3,479 passing yards and 22 touchdowns last season, leading Texas to a College Football Playoff appearance.

Manning saw limited action during his freshman season at Texas, completing a pair of passes for 30 yards while playing backup to Ewers. Manning, the No. 1 prospect in the class of 2022 according to 247Sports' composite list, will be looking to earn a starting spot during the offseason, but it will be a challenge going up against Ewers.

Perhaps keeping his focus solely on his development rather than his status in EA Sports College Football 25 will pay dividends.

Xavier Worthy showed off his blazing speed in historic fashion at the NFL combine on Saturday.

The Texas wide receiver posted an official time of 4.21 seconds in his second 40-yard dash attempt, besting John Ross III's all-time mark (4.22 seconds) that was set in 2017.

Worthy's time, which was initially clocked at an unofficial 4.22 seconds, impressed Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, among other NFL superstars.

The 20-year-old's speed has been well documented, as he showcased game-breaking ability throughout the 2023 season.

According to Reel Analytics, Worthy reached a top speed of 22.7 mph during a punt return touchdown in Week 12 that was eventually called back due to a penalty. That represented the top mark among all college players in 2023.

For reference, Seattle Seahawks wideout D.K. Metcalf led all NFL players in the 2023 season with a top speed of 22.23 mph during a touchdown in the team's clash with the Dallas Cowboys in Week 13.

In his last season with the Longhorns, Worthy hauled in 75 receptions for 1,014 yards and five touchdowns in 14 games. Bleacher Report's NFL Scouting Department currently has him ranked as the No. 10 wide receiver and No. 57 overall player on its most recent big board.

B/R NFL Scout Derrik Klassen mentioned concerns with Worthy's size despite pointing out his ability to take the top off opposing defenses.

"In the NFL, Worthy will be an auxiliary pass-catcher used to stretch the field and stress defenses horizontally at the line of scrimmage," Klassen wrote. "However, given Worthy's lack of size and overall inconsistency (especially with his hands), he has a high-risk, high-reward profile that may not be for everyone."

The uneasiness regarding his size seems to be warranted, as Worthy measured in at just over 5'11" and 165 pounds at the combine. However, his record-breaking speed was on full display and will likely provide a boost to his draft stock.

Texas defensive lineman Byron Murphy II, ranked No. 22 on the latest B/R NFL Scouting Department big board, just had himself a day.

Murphy was a certified star at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis on Thursday for various reasons. Here's a look at measurements, highlights, analysis and notes.

Daniel Jeremiah of NFL Network provided a quick measurement breakdown:

On the Lucas Oil Stadium field, the nearly 300-pound Murphy flew during the 40-yard dash, registering a time of 4.88 seconds:

He added a 33" broad jump and 9'3" vertical:

Murphy also impressed during agility drills:

Ultimately, Murphy put forth a tremendous effort, and many people took notice.

Murphy landed 27th overall to the Arizona Cardinals in the B/R NFL post-Senior Bowl mock draft. After Thursday, though, he could very well be moving on up.

Texas defensive lineman T'Vondre Sweat, who weighs in at 366 pounds, ran the 40-yard dash at 5.27 seconds during the NFL Scouting Combine on Thursday in Indianapolis.

Sweat called his shot at his combine press conference earlier, telling reporters that he was going to "shock" them.

Sweat, who did not run a second 40-yard dash, posted a 1.80 10-yard split during his run.

It was an impressive performance for the big man, who made headlines after he refrained from weighing in at the Senior Bowl.

All turned out well, though, as his official weigh-in at the combine showed that he's fairly close to his collegiate playing weight (362, per the Texas roster).

Per Stacey Dales of NFL Network, Sweat also posted a 26-inch vertical and an 8'2" broad jump.

So this was a good day for Sweat, who looks like a Day 2 pick at worst.

The B/R NFL Scouting Department notably ranks Sweat No. 48 overall (No. 4 among defensive linemen) in this year's draft.

POSITIVES

— Great acceleration. Explodes out of his stance and threatens DBs immediately.

— Good speed in the open field. Can separate on crossers of all depths and break away with the ball at times.

— Above-average play strength as a receiver. Uses his body well to fight through contact, both before and at the catch point.

— Excellent ball skills and concentration. Displays great, consistent catch technique; has the strength and discipline to hang on in traffic.

— Useful pass protector.

NEGATIVES

— Below-average size for the position. May never be a traditional Y in the NFL.

— Poor strength and technique as a run-blocker.

— Change of direction can be clunky on sharper route breaks, such as stick routes and digs.

2023 STATISTICS

— 14 G, 45 REC, 682 YDS (15.2 AVG), 2 TD

NOTES

— Born Mar. 27, 2003

— 5-star recruit in 2021 class, per 247Sports

— 27 career starts

— 2022 and 2023 first-team All-Big 12

OVERALL

Ja'Tavion Sanders is an undersized tight end with the speed and ball skills to develop into a specialized weapon.

Sanders' profile starts with his size. At 6'4" and 243 pounds, he will be one of the lightest tight ends in the NFL.

Sanders struggles in the run game, especially when he's on the line of scrimmage. While he often takes good angles and attacks the right landmarks, Sanders shows poor strength and command upon contact. He also tends to lean and whiff at his targets.

Size and strength alone limits Sanders' likelihood of becoming a functional Y tight end or big-time red-zone threat. With that being said, he is a fantastic receiver.

Sanders primarily wins with speed. He rips off the line of scrimmage with great acceleration and has a fairly threatening top speed. That same speed and explosiveness shows up when Sanders has the ball. Sanders isn't quite at the Evan Engram/Jared Cook level for tight end speed, but he's in that next tier.

As a route-runner, Sanders offers more good than bad. He can be clunky getting in and out of sharp routes, such as stick routes and digs, but any route with a little room for flexibility works for Sanders. Most of his best work is on crossing routes at any depth.

Sanders also brings fantastic ball skills. He's not big or long, so he isn't necessarily a ball-winner in the air, but he has excellent strength and concentration in traffic. Sanders shows repeatable ability to pluck the ball from the air and secure it despite a sea of bodies around him.

Sanders projects as a high-end role player or niche starter in the NFL. His lack of size, strength and blocking ability make it difficult to envision him earning a full-time starting role for now. However, there will be a role for someone with Sanders' speed and ball skills. He would be best in a role similar to Evan Engram or Isaiah Likely.
