After a 30-15 loss to Georgia in Week 8, the Texas Longhorns needed a rebound.

It earned a 27-24 victory over Vanderbilt to accomplish this, although it was a bit too close for comfort.

The Commodores grabbed momentum early after snagging an interception from Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers. Vanderbilt would turn this into a touchdown moments later and had Texas on upset watch.

That's when the Longhorns returned fire, scoring three consecutive touchdowns before a field goal in the final seconds from the Commodores made it 21-10 at the half.

The Longhorns re-established the 14-point lead with a field goal but a Vanderbilt touchdown brought the Commodores to within seven. However, multiple interceptions and another field goal sealed the victory for the Longhorns.

Texas' defense forced three turnovers and limited the Commodores to just 261 total yards. Quintrevion Wisner was the Longhorns leading rusher with 79 yards on 17 carries while DeAndre Moore was the top receiver with six catches for 97 yards and two touchdowns.

Ewers went 27-of-37 for 288 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. While it wasn't a perfect day, it was still an improved performance that should bode well for the rest of the season.

Fans took to social media to hype up Ewers and the Longhorns' redemption performance.

Surviving the Commodores was a huge plus for the Longhorns, as Vanderbilt knocked off then No. 1 Alabama earlier in the month and entered the game at No. 25 in the nation.

Texas has four games remaining in the regular season, with Texas A&M being the only opponent that is currently ranked. If the Longhorns can finish the season strong, they will have a very good case to make the College Football Playoff.

Vince Young Named to 2024 SEC Legends Class; Former Texas Star Played in Big 12

Former Texas quarterback Vince Young may have spent his three college seasons in the Big 12, but that hasn't stopped the SEC from honoring his Longhorns career.

Young was among the 16 former players named to the 2024 SEC Legends Class on Tuesday.

Texas's tenure in the Big 12 spanned from 1996 to 2023 and included Young's run to the 2005 national championship. The Longhorns joined the SEC ahead of the 2024 season.

The SEC honor comes after Young was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame five years ago in recognition of his historic 2005 campaign, during which he became the first quarterback in FBS history to amass more than 3,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards in the same season.

The former Texas quarterback isn't the only member of the 2024 class who is being honored for his work in the Big 12.

Oklahoma head coach Barry Switzer was also named to the class. Switzer coached the Sooners through 16 seasons in the Big 12 between 173 and 1988. Like Texas, Oklahoma joined the SEC ahead of the 2024 season.

The 2024 class also featured Missouri quarterback Chase Daniel, who represented the Tigers between 2005 and 2008, and Texas A&M offensive tackle Luke Joeckel, who played for the Aggies in 2011.

Honoring players who starred for their program while playing in a different conference is nothing new for the SEC Football Legends award program, which has been conducted since 1994.

The 2024 class will be honored during a Dec. 6 ceremony at Atlanta's College Football Hall of Fame, and on Dec. 7 during the SEC Football Championship Game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Young, Switzer, Daniel and Joeckel are set to be honored alongside Alabama's Barrett Jones, Arkansas' Ken Hamlin, Auburn's Marcus McNeill, Florida's Rex Grossman, Georgia's Terrence Edwards, Kentucky's Dicky Lyons St., LSU's Andrew Whitworth, Ole Miss' Dexter McCluster, Mississippi State's Fletcher Cox, South Carolina's Corey Miller, Tennessee's Eric Berry and Vanderbilt's Ricky Anderson.

Quinn Ewers Posts 'Fake News' on IG amid Rumors of Leaving Texas Early for NFL Draft

Texas quarterback Quinn Ewers reassured fans that he won't sit out for the remainder of the season after false reports on Monday.

A now-deleted Instagram post from 247Sports claimed that Ewers would miss the rest of the 2024 season to prepare for the NFL draft. Per On3 Sports' Pete Nakos, a source close to Ewers said the report "is absolutely not true."

Pete Thamel of ESPN also confirmed Ewers is not planning to sit out and said he practiced on Monday in preparation for Saturday's matchup against Vanderbilt.

Ewers seemingly responded to the rumors with an Instagram story that called the report "fake news."

247Sports released the following statement regarding the post:

Ewers will almost certainly hear his name called in the 2025 NFL draft, but he's focusing on winning games rather than preparing for the draft for now.

The junior quarterback has 1,101 passing yards, 11 touchdowns and four interceptions so far this season, though he missed two games due to an oblique injury. In the Longhorns' loss to Georgia on Saturday, he had 211 passing yards, a pair of touchdowns and an interception.

He was briefly relieved by freshman quarterback Arch Manning, but head coach Steve Sarkisian confirmed afterward that he would stick with Ewers under center.

"Quinn's our starting quarterback," Sarkisian said. "I appreciate the fact we're fortunate enough to have a backup like Arch that could come into the game and provide a spark in some sense. At the end of the day, Quinn's our starter. I think, like I said, we've got to do a better job around him. I think he would tell you he can play better, but we've got to coach better. Everybody's got to be better for our offense to perform better."

As Sarkisian said, Texas has a talented backup it can call upon if needed, but Ewers has proved his ability to lead the Longhorns in big games after taking them to the College Football Playoff a year ago.

Ewers and Texas are looking to make it to the CFP again this year and are still well within reach of that goal even after the loss on Saturday. The Longhorns have a matchup with now-ranked Vanderbilt on Saturday and have another ranked team waiting on them later this year when they face Texas A&M to close out the season.

Winning its remaining five games of the season would likely guarantee Texas a spot in the Playoff.

Matthew McConaughey on Texas Fans Throwing Trash on Field: We're Better Than That

Actor Matthew McConaughey standing on the sidelines for marquee games has become synonymous with Texas football, and he wasn't happy with how things unfolded when fans threw bottles and trash on the field during Saturday's loss to Georgia.

"But let's get real about the bottle bombing the field glitch we had," he said in a statement. "Not cool. Bogey move. Yeah, that call was BS, but we're better than that. Longhorn Nation knows how to show up, show out like no other, and still keep our class.

"So, going forward, let's clean that kind of BS up and leave that behind us for good. We have to shake hands on that."

Georgia jumped out to a 23-0 halftime lead, but Texas built momentum in the third quarter. After trimming the deficit to 23-8, the Longhorns intercepted a Carson Beck pass and returned it deep inside Bulldogs' territory.

However, the officials initially called defensive pass interference that wiped out the pick, which enraged the fans. Some of them responded by throwing the bottles and garbage onto the field, although the officials eventually changed the penalty call and allowed the interception to stand.

"I won't comment because I want to respect the wishes of the SEC office," Georgia head coach Kirby Smart told reporters after the game. "But I will say now we have a precedent that if you throw a bunch of stuff on the field and endanger athletes, that you've got a chance to get your call reversed."

The SEC released a statement that said, in part, "While the original evaluation and assessment of the penalty was not properly executed, it is unacceptable to have debris thrown on the field at any time."

It also fined Texas $250,000

The Longhorns cut the lead to 23-15 following the controversial sequence, but Georgia seized control once again in the fourth quarter and won 30-15.

Fortunately for McConaughey and the rest of the Longhorns fans, there is room for error with the 12-team College Football Playoff field. Texas surely still controls its own destiny even after the loss and doesn't play a particularly imposing schedule the rest of the way by SEC standards.

No. 14 Texas A&M and No. 25 Vanderbilt are the only remaining ranked teams on the slate, and it avoids the likes of Alabama, Tennessee, Ole Miss, LSU and Missouri. That should be plenty of wins in front of a fanbase that will be under more of a spotlight after Saturday.

Texas Fined $250K for Fans Throwing Debris on Field After Controversial Call vs. UGA

A controversial call in the third quarter of Saturday's matchup between Georgia and Texas interrupted the game after fans threw debris on the field, and the Longhorns are paying for it.

The SEC announced on Sunday that Texas will be fined $250,000 due to the reaction from fans that delayed the game before the Longhorns suffered a 30-15 loss.

In addition to the fine, Texas is being required to identify all of the individuals who threw debris on the field and prohibit them from attending future Texas Athletics events for the remainder of the 2024-25 academic year. The university also must review and update its game management procedures and alcohol availability policies to prevent future incidents like this from happening. It will then have to provide a report to the Conference Office summarizing its efforts to fulfill these requirements.

"The throwing of debris and resulting interruption of play that took place Saturday night cannot be part of any SEC event," SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey said. "The SEC is assigned responsibility by its membership to enforce its sportsmanship and game management policies and these actions are consistent with that oversight responsibility, including the financial penalty and mandated reviews."

The instance occurred after an interception by Longhorns safety Jahdae Barron was called back for defensive pass interference. After the stoppage caused by the debris on the field, the officials overturned the penalty and gave Texas the ball, giving a perception that the ugly behavior from the fans actually benefitted the team.

Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian addressed the incident after the loss, which was Texas' first of the season and knocked the team from No. 1 to No. 5 in the AP Top 25.

"I understand the frustration," Sarkisian said after the game. "We all were frustrated in the moment. But, you know ... all of Longhorn Nation, I know we can be better than that."

Longhorns officials also released a statement apologizing for the incident.

"While we deeply appreciate the passion and loyalty of our fan base at The University of Texas at Austin, we do not condone the unsportsmanlike conduct that was exhibited by some individuals throwing objects onto the field during last night's game and sincerely apologize to the University of Georgia players, coaches, and fans, as well as the Southeastern Conference and officiating crew," the statement from Texas Board of Regents chairman Kevin Eltife, UT president Jay Hartzell and athletic director Chris Del Conte read. "This type of behavior will not be tolerated."

Texas Apologizes to Georgia, Refs After Fans Throw Trash on Field During Loss

Texas officials issued an apology to Georgia and SEC referees after fans threw trash on the field during the Longhorns' 30-15 loss to the Bulldogs on Saturday.

Texas Board of Regents chairman Kevin Eltife, university president Jay Hartzell and athletic director Chris Del Conte released a joint statement addressing the incident on Sunday, via ESPN's Dave Wilson.

"While we deeply appreciate the passion and loyalty of our fan base at The University of Texas at Austin, we do not condone the unsportsmanlike conduct that was exhibited by some individuals throwing objects onto the field during last night's game and sincerely apologize to the University of Georgia players, coaches, and fans, as well as the Southeastern Conference and officiating crew," the statement said.

Longhorns fans threw bottles and other debris onto the field after an interception by safety Jahdae Barron was initially nullified due to a pass interference penalty. The call was eventually reversed.

The reversal wasn't immediate, with the trash on the field causing a delay as staff members and security cleaned it up while Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian told fans to stop. Officials gathered before play resumed to change the call, giving Texas the ball.

The Longhorns were able to score on the ensuing drive, cutting the deficit to 23-15. Texas couldn't get any closer throughout the remainder of the contest, as the Bulldogs found the end zone near the start of the fourth quarter and maintained a double-digit lead.

Georgia head coach Kirby Smart was visibly frustrated following the decision and addressed it after the game.

"Now we've set a precedent that if you throw a bunch of stuff on the field and endanger athletes that you've got a chance to get your call reversed," Smart said, per Wilson. "And that's unfortunate because, to me, that's dangerous. That's not what we want, and that's not criticizing officials. That's what happened."

Texas suffered its first defeat of the season with Saturday night's loss, falling to 6-1. Longhorns starting quarterback Quinn Ewers struggled and was briefly replaced by backup Arch Manning just before halftime, but he returned under center to open the third quarter.

As for the Bulldogs, they won their third consecutive game after a hard-fought loss to Alabama on Sept. 28. Smart's team now owns a record of 6-1.

Kevin Durant Reacts to Texas' Loss vs. Georgia: 'The Bounce Back Will Be Special'

Oct 20, 2024

Kevin Durant isn't giving up on his school.

The former Texas basketball star reacted to the Longhorns' first loss of the 2024 college football season by taking to social media and saying his team will "bounce back" from the 30-15 defeat to the Georgia Bulldogs:

Texas entered Saturday's game with a 6-0 record and the No. 1 ranking in the country with victories over Michigan and Oklahoma already secured.

While those wins over the Wolverines and Sooners haven't aged as well as they would in a typical season for those programs, the Longhorns still have the cushion to survive a loss to Georgia in the era of the 12-team College Football Playoff. And Texas A&M is the only ranked team remaining on their schedule, so they could secure a spot in the SEC Championship Game just by taking care of business against overmatched opponents.

Still, Saturday was an opportunity to make a national statement against one of the powerhouses in their new conference.

Instead, it was the Bulldogs making the statement by jumping out to a commanding 23-0 halftime lead. Texas trimmed the deficit to 23-15 in the third quarter, but Trevor Etienne gave Georgia some breathing room again with the final touchdown of the game in the fourth.

Etienne scored three touchdowns on the ground as the star of the game.

More than just the result stood out, as Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian temporarily replaced starting quarterback Quinn Ewers with Arch Manning with the hope the latter would provide a spark. He didn't, and the Longhorns turned back to Ewers in the second half.

There was also controversy in the third quarter when a pass interference penalty temporarily wiped out a Texas interception. Fans responded by throwing water bottles and trash on the field, and the officials eventually changed the penalty call.

The play didn't cost Georgia the victory, but it could serve as a backdrop if there was a rematch in the SEC Championship Game.

If there is, Durant will certainly be tuning in and cheering for his Longhorns after he took home the Wooden and Naismith Awards as a consensus All-American during his one season of college basketball at Texas in 2006-07.

The Longhorns are no longer undefeated.

No. 1 Texas couldn't overcome a poor first-half performance against No. 5 Georgia on Saturday night, losing by the final score of 30-15.

Quinn Ewers had issues with turnovers throughout the game, as he threw an interception in the first quarter and fumbled the ball twice.

The Longhorns fell in an early 20-0 hole with Ewers in the game, prompting head coach Steve Sarkisian to briefly insert backup Arch Manning into the contest. Manning also couldn't get into any rhythm in the pocket against Georgia's defense, completing three of his six throws for 19 yards.

Ewers was eventually put back into the game to start the second half. He finished 25-of-43 for 211 yards and two touchdowns to go along with three turnovers as fans called out his struggles.

Texas started to gain some momentum in the third quarter, scoring on the team's first possession of the second half. The Longhorns were able to cut the deficit to 23-15 following a controversial pass interference ruling on an interception, but they were never able to get closer to the Bulldogs for the remainder of the contest.

Georgia scored a touchdown at the start of the fourth quarter to push its lead to double-digits once more, sealing the win.

The Bulldogs overcame a subpar performance from Carson Beck, who passed for just 175 yards and threw three interceptions.

In addition to Ewers, fans criticized the team as a whole.

Texas and Georgia now own identical 6-1 records following Saturday's result.

Fans were confused following a controversial defensive pass interference ruling during No. 1 Texas' matchup with No. 5 Georgia on Saturday.

Near the end of the third quarter, Bulldogs quarterback Carson Beck threw a pass that was picked off by Longhorns defensive back Jahdae Barron. However, Barron was flagged on the play.

Texas fans threw bottles and other trash onto the field to protest the call, resulting in a delay as head coach Steve Sarkisian attempted to calm down the crowd. Officials determined that there was no penalty on the play when the game resumed, though. Texas retained the ball.

Fans and pundits on social media were perplexed by the situation.

https://twitter.com/AttorneyNicole/status/1847827506419646976

Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart was visibly frustrated with officials on the sideline after the penalty was reversed.

The game was already eventful prior to the controversy, as Georgia jumped out to an early 23-0 lead in the first half. Longhorns quarterback Quinn Ewers was briefly replaced by backup Arch Manning due to a slow start on offense, although Ewers was inserted back into the game after halftime.

Texas scored on its first drive of the third quarter and capitalized on Beck's interception, as Jaydon Blue hauled in a 17-yard receiving touchdown to cut the deficit to 23-15.

The Longhorns entered the game with a 6-0 record to begin the season, which included impressive wins over Michigan and Oklahoma.

As for the Bulldogs, they opened the year ranked No. 1 in the first Associated Press Top 25 poll and won each of their first three games. However, they were eventually knocked out of the top spot following a narrow 41-34 loss to No. 7 Alabama on Sept. 28. Smart's team has won two consecutive games following the defeat.

With both teams searching for a statement win, a major possession change was decided following an extended period in between plays due to debris thrown onto Campbell-Williams Field.

Sarkisian: Quinn Ewers Still Texas' QB1 Despite Benching for Arch Manning vs. Georgia

Facing a 20-0 first-half deficit against No. 5 Georgia on Saturday, No. 1 Texas made a quarterback change.

Starter Quinn Ewers was replaced under center by Arch Manning, who previously started two games earlier in the year. Ewers and the Longhorns' offense couldn't get on the board after six drives, mustering a mere 29 total yards of offense (h/t The Athletic).

Ewers finished 6-of-12 for 17 yards, getting sacked three times.

Manning didn't fare much better in the first half, as Texas was held scoreless. He completed three of his six pass attempts for 19 yards, taking two sacks.

Longhorns head coach Steve Sarkisian seemingly changed his mind at halftime, as Ewers was back on the field to start the third quarter. Texas was able to get on the board following the switch, scoring a touchdown as well as a two-point conversion on the opening drive of the second half.

"I was just trying to settle Quinn down a little bit," Sarkisian explained, via Griffin McVeigh of On3.com. "Trying to give us a little bit of a spark. But we got to get out of our own way. We're not playing very good as a unit right now. Thank God our defense is putting out some fires for us."

Sarkisian also confirmed that Ewers would remain the starting quarterback:

"Quinn's our starting quarterback," Sarkisian said, per Dave Wilson of ESPN. "I appreciate the fact that we're fortunate enough to have a backup like Arch that can come into the game and provide a spark in some sense, but at the end of the day, Quinn's our starter."

Manning, the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2023 class, has shown that he can be successful when given extended playing time. After Ewers suffered an oblique strain against UTSA on Sept. 14, the redshirt freshman finished 9-of-12 for 223 yards and five total touchdowns.

Manning continued his strong play after he was inserted as Texas' starter, completing 68.3 percent of his throws for 583 yards and four touchdowns as well as a pair of interceptions in two games.

Ewers hasn't been as effective in the pocket since returning from the oblique injury, throwing for just 199 yards and a touchdown during the Longhorns' 34-3 win over Oklahoma on Oct. 12. He was also picked off near the start of the first quarter.

Regardless of Saturday night's outcome against the Bulldogs, Texas may have a quarterback controversy moving forward.
