Such is the accelerated nature of T20 cricket that upon the smallest events can seasons hinge.

The slightest moment lost can quite quickly spiral into a more existential defeat, a defeat that transcends the isolation of its immediate repercussions.

For the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), that moment could well prove to be Chris Lynn's sensational boundary catch; its staggering manifestation a psychological rubber stamp to their belief that perhaps that match, that match in which they needed just 29 off 26 yet failed to win, was never meant for them.

Of course, no match is meant for anyone, and that match was as much lost by Sunil Narine’s sprinkling of stardust to remove Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh’s 34-ball 31 and AB de Villiers’ 12-ball 11 than Lynn’s catch. But so much of cricket is played in the mind, and that defeat, sealed by that catch, will have shocked and scarred the Royal Challengers.

Just two days later, RCB seemed surprised by the extra bounce in the Abu Dhabi pitch—de Villiers and Sachin Rana dragging on, and some excellent Rajasthan Royals bowling; yet they also appeared lazy—Parthiv Patel was run out, Virat Kohli pulled straight to mid-wicket and Albie Morkel failed to get to the pitch of a Pravin Tambe delivery.

But before you knew it, their misjudgement of the pitch, insouciance and some good bowling had seen them rolled out for 70, and they were 13 overs away from consecutive defeats, having been just millimetres away from three consecutive victories just days before.

Any sense of form or momentum that RCB may have garnered from their opening two victories—that were perhaps counter-intuitively comfortable—disappeared within days.

Having been close to joining the Chennai Super Kings and Kings XI Punjab in the runaway group at the top of the table, they suddenly found themselves perilously close to becoming embroiled in a mid-table dog-fight.

Thus their match against Kings XI Punjab in Dubai on Monday was their chance to avoid such a scenario and claw back some lost ground.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIU8Id-7Tr8

As it was, the mistakes, poor fortune and impressive opposition of the Rajasthan defeat were perpetuated in Dubai against the Kings XI.

Chris Gayle, in his return to the side and perennially unperturbed by the struggles of others, threatened ever so briefly to blow away the pervasive influences of his team's poor form in a whirlwind innings, but excitement got the better of him as he charged too hard and too fast one too many times.

Kohli got a bad decision, and Patel got a good ball, but de Villiers' loose, half-hearted push was indicative of a man in poor form; so too was Yuvraj’s mistimed pull-shot, while Morkel’s footwork made a sloth look proactive.

The frustrations of this absurdly powerful batting order yet again failing to impose itself were betrayed by RCB's captain Kohli in the field, anger marking his face for what seemed like the entirety of the Kings XI innings.

Of course, he has reason enough to be vexed; his outrageous batting order has dramatically imploded in their last two-and-a-half matches, and with four points from five games, time is running out for them to rediscover winning ways.

They are a batting order boasting immense talent, but ghosts of matches past, misfortune and poor form are corrupting the finest of minds.

Kohli and RCB can draw strength, albeit alongside more frustration, from the impressive and promising displays of their bowling attack. Obviously successful in their opening two fixtures, the bowlers have maintained such form whilst their batting team-mates have not.

Yet, while crucially the struggles of sides such as the Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders are based in personnel issues, the same cannot be said for RCB who have most bases covered. If only their players could find some form, they’d be an imposing team.

With players of the quality RCB have, it is unlikely that they will collectively struggle for much longer. Form is temporary and class is permanent. It's how long this temporary run of poor form for the likes of Kohli and de Villiers continues that is relevant. That class needs to shine through before it is too late.

RCB are fortunate that the Super Kings and Kings XI are pulling away as they are, for it may become a bitter scrap for third and fourth amongst teams who may take points off each other regularly.

Seven wins is normally the minimum threshold for qualification in the IPL—at least historically that has been the case—and with 10 matches to go, that leaves RCB searching for five wins to reach that mark.

Seasons can, as RCB know, turn on the smallest of moments. They'll be hoping for such a moment as they return to India and to Bengaluru on Sunday against the Sunrisers.

Royal Challengers Bangalore All out for 70: How RCB Stop a Repeat Failure in IPL

During the first strategic timeout of Royal Challengers Bangalore's innings in their Indian Premier League match against Rajasthan Royals on Saturday, the Indian broadcaster showed highlights of Chris Gayle's magnificent and record-breaking 175 not out from the previous season. The irony would certainly not have been lost on RCB and its followers, with their score reading 28 for six at the stage.

Bangalore went on to be dismissed for a humiliating 70 runs—the third-lowest total ever in the IPL and lowest by RCB—by a bowling attack that lacked the luxury of any big names.

RCB, on the other hand, had two of the most explosive batsmen in the world—Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers—and the most expensive player in the tournament—Yuvraj Singh ($2.3 million)—at their disposal. More cruel irony.

That RCB have missed the injured Gayle's presence at the top of the order is quite obvious. It is, of course, another thing altogether that one person should not be making as much of a difference to a team's fortunes. One could, of course, argue that this game could be a one-off blip for RCB and that they have looked quite comfortable in their earlier wins, while their only other loss in the tournament, against Kolkata Knight Riders, was by the narrowest of margins.

However, that doesn't take away from the fact that RCB are missing the starts that used to be provided by Gayle and Tillakaratne Dilshan in past seasons. The team's think-tank has tried out three batsmen so far at the top of the order. Nic Maddinson (16 runs in two games) was replaced by Yogesh Takawale (40 runs in two games) for their last two matches, with Parthiv Patel (116 runs in four games) remaining the only constant.

Gayle and Patel could go on to form an envious pair, but until the big Jamaican returns to fitness, RCB should perhaps consider sending a more experienced batsman to open the innings.

AB de Villiers could be pushed up the order in Gayle's absence.
AB de Villiers could be pushed up the order in Gayle's absence.

The name of AB de Villiers seems the most suitable out of the lot. The South African surely doesn't lag behind Gayle much on the explosiveness quotient and can be banked to provide a flying start to the innings. Considering Kohli is a tested performer at one-down, it makes sense to try pushing de Villiers up the order. He has scored 2,346 runs as an opener for South Africa across all three formats, including four centuries, so it would not be anything alien to him.

Gayle's comeback doesn't seem too far away, but RCB would want to avoid slip-ups like the one on Saturday if they hold hopes of lifting their maiden IPL trophy this season. If de Villiers succeeds at the top of the order, it would give the team a lot of confidence considering they have an able back-up for Gayle. Giving de Villiers, the top-ranked batsman in the world, more deliveries to face might also just be the ingredient that stands between RCB and total dominance in the tournament.

Weather: According to Weather.com, Sharjah will be very hot and sunny, with temperatures up around 38 degrees Celsius with only a slight wind to keep the players cool.

Overview

Despite being without star opener Chris Gayle, Royal Challengers Bangalore have enjoyed two very comfortable victories in the IPL so far this year.

Winning on both occasions, having won the toss and chose to field, Bangalore’s top order have all looked in fine form, especially captain Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh.

Last time out against the Mumbai Indians, their bowlers also found a good rhythm and were able to restrict their opponents very effectively, with Mitchell Starc and Yuzvendra Chahal both coming to the fore well.

Having missed out on the playoffs in last year’s tournament by just two points, the Royal Challengers look determined to avenge that result and make a lasting impact this time around.

Meanwhile, things have not been so easy for the Kolkata Knight Riders, who have lost one and won one in what has been an inconsistent opening to the IPL for Gautam Gambhir’s side.

On both occasions their batsmen have fired, but unfortunately they were let down by their bowlers in defeat to the Delhi Daredevils last time out.

However, with Sunil Narine clearly a very potent spin bowler and joined by the likes of Shakib Al Hasan and Morne Morkel, the Knight Riders have more than enough to overcome any team on their day.

Key Players

Balancing the wicket-keeping responsibilities as well, Patel has shown himself to be an enormously capable player in Twenty20 cricket.

Jacques Kallis

Jacques Kallis has made something of an inconsistent start to the IPL, but he is still crucial for the Kolkata Knight Riders.

Dismissed for a golden duck last time out, he will be desperate to make amends and build a big platform for his side.

Royal Challengers Bangalore recorded their second consecutive win in the 2014 Indian Premier League with a seven-wicket victory over Mumbai Indians.

Bangalore, having won the toss and elected to field, restricted the defending champions to 115-9 in their 20 overs at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.

RCB reached their target with 15 balls to spare as AB de Villiers and Parthiv Patel shared an unbroken 99-run partnership for the fourth wicket.

Mumbai, who lost by 41 runs to Kolkata Knight Riders in the tournament opener, fell away after reaching the end of the Powerplay on 49-1.

Ambati Rayudu top-scored with 35, but his strike rate was under 100, and they lost captain Rohit Sharma and big-hitting West Indian Kieron Pollard cheaply in the middle of the innings.

The Indians made just 52 runs, losing six wickets in the process, in the second half of their innings with none of their batters hitting a six.

However Bangalore, who beat Delhi Daredevils by eight wickets on Thursday, stumbled in their reply.

Their star middle order duo of Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh were both dismissed for second-ball ducks as they slumped to 17-3.

RCB, already missing destructive opener Chris Gayle through injury, looked in trouble, but South African De Villiers and opener Patel revived their innings.

De Villiers hit the only six of the match, in making 45 from 48 balls, with Patel hitting the winning run to finish unbeaten on 57 from 45 balls.

Bangalore beat Delhi by eight wickets in the second match of the 2014 Indian Premier League season in Sharjah.

The Royal Challengers, who won the toss and elected to field, restricted the Daredevils to 145-4 in their 20 overs at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium.

The 2009 and 2011 runners-up reached their target with 20 balls to spare to open their campaign with a victory.

Delhi needed a half-century from JP Duminy to lift them to a respectable total after losing three wickets in the opening 25 balls.

Mayank Agarwal, stand-in skipper Dinesh Karthik and Manoj Tiwary all failed to reach double figures, and Murali Vijay (18) joined them in the hutch at the start of the eighth over.

However, a record fifth-wicket partnership of 110 for the Daredevils by South African Duminy, who finished unbeaten on 63 from 47 balls, and New Zealand’s Ross Taylor (43) took them past seven runs an over.

Parthiv Patel departed for 37 in the ninth over, but the experienced pair of Virat Kohli (49 not out) and Yuvraj Singh (52 not out) built on the solid foundation to see them home.

Things could have been different, however, as Kohli was dropped by both debutant Jimmy Neesham and Agarwal in the 13th over.

IPL Stars: Jacques Henry Kallis

Mar 16, 2010

Born October 16, 1975, Pinelands, Cape Town, Cape Province

Current age 34 years

Major teams South Africa, Africa XI, Cape Cobras, Glamorgan, ICC World XI, Middlesex, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Warriors, Western Province

Batting style Right-hand bat

Bowling style Right-arm fast-medium

Jacques Kallis is one of the world best all- rounders, currently ranked number one according to the ICC Reliance Rankings.

Now representing South Africa for over ten years, he is seen as a batsman who has perfection in almost every stroke.

Many commentators speak about his "text-book" style of play, he is never put under pressure to score at a fast rate.

In recent years Kallis has tried to perfect his game in the shorter version, so as to be well equipped for twenty20 matches.

After been signed up by the Royal Challenger Bangalore he has moved up the order, opening the batting with remarkable results.

Kallis who took time finding his feet in IPL 1, seem to have had home advantage in IPL2, when the million dollar competition was moved to South Africa due to security concerns in India.

There Kallis ended the second season as the top scorer for the Challenger, now after 26 matches in IPL he has a tally of 560 runs with an average of 23.33 and striker rate just above 108.

His experience both as a batsman and bowler makes he a regular starter. Jakes will look forward to improving his strike rate in this season as the competition gets tougher with more and more younger players coming into the league.

In terms of his settling down at the team, Kallis is lucky to have his close friend Mark Boucher, and fellow South Africans: Dale Styen, Roelof van der Merwe and Dillion du Preez in the Squad.

Royal Challengers is also coached by South Africa, Ray Jennings.

The Official Curtain Closer for the Indian Premier League

May 24, 2009

I am a Bangalore Royal Challengers fan. And despite knowing that after the kind of final we had, cricket has to be the clear winner, I still feel a bit low. But that is my problem, not yours.

IPL 2 is over.

So many fans have been disappointed. But one eighth of them aren't (I hope you are in that one eighth). It's their team, Deccan, that has weaved the magic after the last place in the previous tournament.

But these are unnecessary details that none of us really want. That's why I will not give them to you. But what I am going to give to you, are my thoughts on the tournament which I am sure would be respected by all of you.

This season of the IPL would be remembered for many reasons but these are the three ones that immediately come to my mind.

Old men came to the party this time round. They proved why they are what they are. Be it the orange cap holder Mathew Hayden or Rahul Dravid, Sourav Ganguly and Sachin Tendulkar who scored some crucial runs for there respective teams. Symonds, Gillchrist, Jayasuriya were also quite brilliant. Gilly's 85 of 35 in the semis was something that we will never forget.

Also, Anil Kumble. Who not not only bowled quite brilliantly during the tournament, but also captained RCB after Kevin Pietersen left them in tatters and brought them back. He almost manages the final as well. Bu it's a pity his great bowling performance in this final (4-16) was not rewarded with a win.

Shane Warne also was quite a good captain and bowled fairly well though not as great as he has been.

Spin was finally the king in T20. These slow bowlers, who are thought of as easy targets because of their lack of pace, proved that they were underestimated. Not only Kumble and Warne, but those part timers and other spinners too, were very good.

IPL 2 was a tournament full of close and low scoring matches unlike the previous one. It finally gave the bowlers something to cheer about in a game which is usually batsmen dominated. Finally the time came when the batsmen had to have good technique or they failed.

But the sad part is that this is not going to happen the next year when the tourney would be shifted back to India. Back to the flat pitches which used to be spinner friendly a decade ago but now are only batsmen friendly.

Maybe we might see another IPL in more helpful conditions for the bowlers 5 years later when the general elections would again take place since elections were the reasons why security could not be provided to the players in India thus, resulting in the moving of the tournament. Maybe this tournament will help us digest the new government which is often called corrupt.

But this year a few things angered me too, we also had those strategy breaks. Another money making scheme by Mr. Lalit Modi. How can you even think of seven and a half minutes of no cricket in such a fast paced game? Plus the often ended up being momentum breakers for the batting side. Wow! let's break the momentum in a game based totally on momentum.

Over that Arun Lal says that is it good as it helps the bowling side get wickets. I half agree with that but where I disagree is that it can be bad as during that gap your body relaxes and it often becomes difficult to persuade it to play again and therefore, you have to force it. This may very much lead to injuries.

But the thing that really angered me about the IPL was the HEAT initiative to help students by donating money to schools.

Everywhere this move is being praised as being some as it is providing education to the needy.

But what I don't understand is why is there such a big fuss being made when only about 1-2% is being donated while the rest is going to the BCCI treasury. I also like the fact that it is  helping the poor, but some unnecessary fuss is being made over it, which is making it seem like a publicity stunt.

Let's not advertise every deed off goodness that IPL does. So many other people do thing that are never recognised. The often give up their entire lives and fortunes to such causes. People also give up a huge part of their small salaries for these things. And that little money means a lot more to them than this huge sum meaning to BCCI.

But my likes and hates are not the only things I would like to talk about. I would like to end by talking about how the IPL was perceived by me over the past 37 days.

IPL has shown many of us the true picture of Indian cricket. It has shown us that all those Swapnil Asnodkars and Niraj Patels and Manpreet Gonys and the Yusuf Pathans who were the Indian stars of IPL 1 are still not as capable as they seemed to be. They struggle the moment tough conditions arrive.

Which clearly show that Indian domestic cricket has to rise and become still more competitive and the pitches have to improve.

At the same time it showed us that Suresh Raina, Rohit Sharma, R.P. Singh, Irfan Pathan, Abhiskek Nayar, Manish Pandey etc. who proved that they are people ready to adapt.

So we finally got a good Idea about who all can actually take on the high level pressure when things don't exactly go your way. So season 2 has been a true mirror of where India stands.

Something else which we saw was the fact that many team owners decided to have Indian captains replaced by foreign ones. This also highlights that we are not really seeing a promotion of Indian cricket. We are seeing the Indians reemphasising a point which I think is not good for India. The foreigners are they guys capable of leading and Asians are just supposed to follow.

Not all the foreign skippers were successful and that is a lesson to many owners. . We saw how miserably KP and Brendon McCullum failed. Choose good skippers not good foreigners.

It is of extreme importance that we do not just go after the foreign talent. It is the Indian Premiere League and let it be so.

I do not go against foreign captains but I go against blind appointment of any foreign captain when we are so care full about choosing Indian ones.

Another side of the media was seen too. It is so pro youth. Last year, the old men were given a real demoralising doze of criticism by the media. This year when they performed well, it was difficult not to praise them but the young stars were never criticised. What do they want to show? Youth cannot be shown as negative whatever they do and old can?

I really doubt if this is done so that our young talent does no get demoralized. The media does not care.

IPL this year has also shown that India has not matured. If people still complain that batsmen are not able to score enough and not enough runs are scored and not enough fours and sixes are hit, then we seriously face a problem.

This is what leads to so many bowlers not being given much importance which leads to our country never producing a long term product in that department. This has been a problem in India for quite some time. And if this continues, we will never find good back up bowlers for Zaheer and Ishant for the Indian team.

This year we have seen another fact reemphasized. Mr. Modi is a business man. To him the game matters a lot less than the advertisements, sponsors and unnecessary competitions such as Miss Bollywood South Africa

To end this long piece I would like to add that IPL has also given Bleacher cricket a boost. During this time we have seen some brilliant articles written about it. We have also seen some true cricket fans. They wrote about other stuff despite this huge tournament going on. I hail them for that. They also found good readership so I also hail the audience.

And now in the end let me just say: "Get back to some international cricket mate. It's the best cricket. After the Twenty20 World Cup, watch the all important ashes with the same enthusiasm. But yes, wait for IPL 3 and hope we do not see a repeat of those small boundaries and big scores like the first season. It will be a HUGE disappointment after this brilliant tourney in SA."

Thank you, people. Don't forget to comment and give your valuable POTDs. Also, become my fan if you are not so far.

And to Rocky: Mallaya will no longer say "@#$*%"

Is This the Renaissance of Royal Challengers Bangalore?

May 2, 2009

Have Royal Challengers Bangalore finally gotten it right? The team that initially gave the impression that it just did not know how to win is finally undergoing an image makeover.

They are finally making the ends meet and paying off the millions of dollars put in by liquor baron Vijay Mallya.

What's interesting here is that it isn't Mallya's lavish spendings on Kevin Pieterson that's getting it right for RCB.

Instead, the KP factor can be relegated to anywhere in terms of what is finally going right for Bangalore.

It's got more to do with the strategical decisions lile team composition and the roles assigned to every player.

Given the money that Pieterson has got, he was supposed to be the star performer. And so was Jesse Ryder, a late overseas picking for RCB, who had shown incredible form in his first international outings against India recently.

However, both have struggled with their batting and so has Jacques Kallis and Ross Taylor who are just a whisker better than KP and Ryder.

Add to the injury Dale Steyn, probably the best fast bowler in International Cricket right now.

To rub salt to the wounds, Robin Uthappa, imported from Mumbai Indians in exchange of Zaheer Khan, was given the wicket-keeping duties in place of Mark Boucher.

This turned out to be a terrible mistake, given Uthappa's performance with both bat and wicket-keeping gloves in comparison to Zaheer's outstanding run with Mumbai Indians.

The only silver lining in the dark clouds was Rahul Dravid's batting in first few matches.  Quite surprisingly for many fans and experts, this came from a man who had to abdicate his captiancy to KP.

Thanks to Dravid and the wily old fox Anil Kumble, their efforts got them at least one victory (against Rajasthan Royals) in first five matches.

But now, with two victories in row, things finally seem to be falling in right places for RCB. Mark Boucher, who was initially ignored, responded brilliantly when he finally got his break.

In fact, he did against KKR what he's always been good at (finishing it off) with crucial innings of 25 in 13 balls. R Van Der Merwe, another highly talented South African all-rounder in RCB team, too was ignored in his own backyard.

He hit back with a splendid all-round show against Kings XI Punjab and perhaps, is clearly the biggest asset in team RCB now.

Another area where RCB are finally doing well is utilizing its Indian domestic players. Shreevats Goswami, a decent performer in IPL-I, scored a resolute 46 against Knight-Riders coming to bat as opener.

May be he's got a solution to RCB's top-order collapses in first few games. 24-year old Rajesh Bishnoi may not have tasted success at all, but he did provide a glimpse of his slogging prowess against Kings XI Punjab.

In the bowling department, Praveen Kumar seems to be getting better with each game.

Although KP has gone back to England, RCB has all reasons to be optimistic as Rahul Dravid is speculated to be flying from home to South Africa any time soon and scheduled arrival of Nathan Bracken on May 8. Bracken is surely going to add strength with his economically tight bowling suited for bowling in slog overs.

However there still remain some glitches that RCB need to work on. Robin Uthappa and Virat Kohli need to make significant contributions.

But with the tournament half-way through, there is scope for improvement in key areas like team composition and adequate utilization of overseas players.

A Royal, Challenging and Merwellous Performance, Indeed!

May 1, 2009

It has been a terrific day. After its 8 run stunning victory over KXIP today, RCB is 7 matches 6 points and in 5th position. KP, you listening? The Whyte & Mackay cup shall overflow tonight, for sure.

WHOA! What a match!! As Harsha Bhogle made a point, it is disheartening to lose a match after controlling it for three quarters of your 20 overs. Sorry KXIP, very sorry Ness, very very sorry Preity. We know, it ain't pretty to lose by 8 runs.

One thought does strike me, I can't help it! Someone wrote about his personal grouse the other day against KP and RCB captaincy issue. May the moral victory be yours, gentleman, since Anil has proved you right tonight.

Both Yuvraj and Anil tried to lead by examples. I thought Yuvi's hat-trick was the cornerstone of the day, but wait... the Houdini over was coming - the 19th of KXIP innings. What an over from Jumbo! I think am starting to feel that this post is getting to border on prolixity and too much of accolades. But what the hey, Pravin Kumar just did it.

This victory, if one took a quick retro look into the match, did not happen just like that in the post time-out or the last 4 overs.

Actually, the 17th over by PK was horrible. Still, it had Kumble's planning all over it right from ball 1. 3 without loss after Over 1. 4 without loss after Over 2! 70 runs at mid-way.

Parity was being maintained with still 7.6 per over. Then came overs 12 and 13 when the comparison showed KXIP nosing ahead by 3 runs at 12 overs and falling behind by 2 runs after 14.

And even when wickets were not falling, the dot balls were doing the trick of letting the asking rate trickle up ever so unobtrusively. Suddenly 2 stunning catches and a run out later, Punjab was waking up to a new reality.

Mahela gone; Katich gone... Sanga hung in. V de Merwe had a bad over where the ball came unstuck on his hand and full tosses and extras became the norm.

Add to that PK bowled a bad 17. But Anil took personal charge. What a calculative low ball to prove his grasp of the dew factor and the bounce of the turf to castle Sanga. Then the rest was history.

Poor Chawla... couldn't get to his brass tacks, considering he can clear the park. So, RCB live to fight another day. They are putting in their earnest efforts. And I hope Kohli gets his due soon. His catching and fielding have been of the highest order till now. Hopefully RCB's luck holds on.
