Former U.S. Soccer Exec: 'Nobody' Contacted for USMNT Manager Job amid Zidane Rumors

The United States men's national team remains without a permanent manager, and U.S. Soccer is yet to approach a candidate despite speculation.

"I read this stuff and I think to myself, 'I'm the guy who knows about who we reached out to and who we didn't reach out to,'" former sporting director Earnie Stewart told Brian Straus of Sports Illustrated. "I can say through this review process that nobody's been talked to. Nobody."

Stewart stepped down from his position Jan. 26 alongside general manager Brian McBride. Julien Laurens of ESPN had reported Jan. 7 that U.S. Soccer approached former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane about the position but was turned down.

Gregg Berhalter is out of contract after leading the team at the 2022 World Cup, while Anthony Hudson is the squad's interim coach.

Some reports have linked the USMNT to former Leeds United manager Marcelo Bielsa, while plenty of speculation has emerged around American manager Jesse Marsch after his own departure from Leeds on Feb. 6.

Veteran coach Jose Mourinho, meanwhile, has made interesting comments about the squad:

Despite the numerous names being thrown around, U.S. Soccer will remain patient with its approach during the lead-up to the 2026 World Cup.

USSF President Cindy Parlow Cone projected the new manager won't be named until the end of the summer. That would the team remains with an interim manager for CONCACAF Nations League matches in March and potentially June, as well as the 2023 Gold Cup in June and July.

Even with three years left before the next World Cup, the lack of direction for these competitive events could create concern for the American program.

FIFA Confirms USA, Mexico, Canada Automatically Qualify for 2026 World Cup

FIFA announced Tuesday the United States, Mexico and Canada have all automatically qualified for the 2026 men's World Cup as hosts:

The FIFA Council confirmed that, in line with the long standing tradition of having all hosts competing at the FIFA World Cup, as well as sporting and operational considerations, the hosts of the FIFA World Cup 2026, namely Canada, Mexico and the USA, will qualify automatically for the final round of the competition, with their slots therefore being deducted from the overall allocation of six assigned to Concacaf.

The move was expected as all host nations typically qualify automatically for the World Cup, but no decision had been made for the 2026 version. The upcoming World Cup will be the first that features three nations as co-hosts, while the 2002 event was the only one in men's history with matches taking place in more than one country.

Both Japan and South Korea qualified as co-hosts in 2002.

The United States, Mexico and Canada all qualified for the 2022 World Cup through traditional means, with Canada topping the CONCACAF qualifying group to reach its first World Cup since 1986.

There will be higher expectations for each team compared to Qatar, which lost all three matches and was outscored 7-1 as the host this past year.

The decision to have each of the North American teams automatically qualify is significant, with half of the six CONCACAF spots already accounted for heading into 2026 qualifying. Costa Rica, Panama, Jamaica, Honduras and El Salvador will be among those competing for the final three spots.

Removing qualifying also reduces the number of competitive matches for the United States, Mexico and Canada leading into the World Cup.

The teams will still have an opportunity to compete in Nations League, the Gold Cup and potentially Copa America, with six CONCACAF squads joining CONMEBOL for an expanded tournament in 2024.

Paxten Aaronson's Development Encourages USMNT Fans in Draw with Colombia

The United States men's national team played to a 0-0 draw against Colombia on Saturday night at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, in their second game of January camp.

It was a pretty sloppy evening from the Americans. Assistant Anthony Hudson is currently coaching the team while Gregg Berhalter remains without a contract as the investigation surrounding revelations of a domestic violence incident involving him continues.

However, the debut of midfielder Paxten Aaronson caught the attention of many USMNT fans that are hoping the new Eintracht Frankfurt arrival can control the midfield for years to come.

Fans were largely pleased with the 19-year-old's performance, though they noted he needs to gain more muscle and become more physical if he hopes to crack the full-time roster in the future.

Aaronson, the younger brother of USMNT midfielder Brenden Aaronson, grew up in the Philadelphia Union's system. He made 37 appearances for the team from 2021-2022, scoring four goals.

The younger Aaronson also played for the United States' under-20 team, scoring eight goals in 13 appearances. He completed a transfer to Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt in November to continue his development.

The USMNT will be back in action in March in the CONCACAF Nations League. They'll face Grenada on March 24 and El Salvador on March 27.

The United States men's national team concludes its January camp on Saturday with a friendly match against Colombia.

The January camp typically serves as a developmental month for domestic-based players preparing for the Major League Soccer season, athletes out of the first team in Europe, or players based in Scandinavian leagues that break for the winter.

Most of the January participants are the future of the USMNT first-team roster years down the road, but FC Cincinnati's Brandon Vazquez could use a standout performance to join the top collection of players.

Vazquez was left off the 2022 FIFA World Cup roster in favor of Haji Wright, Jesus Ferreira and Josh Sargent. Ferreira is one of five World Cup participants who were brought in for some experience on a roster filled with players who have single-digit USMNT appearances.

Vazquez scored the lone USMNT goal in Wednesday's 2-1 friendly loss to Serbia. He is coming off an 18-goal season in MLS with FC Cincinnati.

The 24-year-old forward is one of the intriguing first-team prospects who should be used by interim manager Anthony Hudson inside Dignity Health Sports Park, the home of MLS' LA Galaxy.

The Colombia squad is mostly made up of players in their 20s with few international appearances. Los Cafeteros had to call up an inexperienced squad because the match does not fall into a FIFA international window.

MLS fans will have an eye on Columbus Crew striker Cucho Hernández, who bagged nine goals after his summer move from Watford, and Los Angeles FC forward Cristian Arango, who has 30 goals in the last two MLS seasons.

Hernandez, Arango and the other young Colombians on the field on Saturday will use the match as a potential lift-off point to reach the first team in 2023.

Brandon Vazquez's Role Up Top For USMNT

The USMNT striker competition is wide open.

The group of forwards taken to the 2022 FIFA World Cup did not perform up to expectations. Haji Wright was the only true striker to score for the USMNT in Qatar, doing so in the 76th minute of a 3-1 loss against the Netherlands in the round of 16.

If you look forward, Vazquez could be a vital addition to the first team with the Concacaf Nations League starting back up in March and the Concacaf Gold Cup coming up in the summer.

There is increased pressure on the USMNT to earn results in the Nations League because the top six teams from that competition will qualify for the 2024 Copa America. Conmebol and Concacaf announced on Friday that the tournament will be held in the United States.

The USMNT must qualify for the 2024 Copa America to test itself against the best teams in South America in high-pressure games that will be scarce in its home confederation before the World Cup since it is automatically qualified for 2026.

Vazquez could lead the line against Grenada and El Salvador in the Nations League in March if he impresses again on Saturday.

The FC Cincinnati player broke out in MLS last season with 18 goals, and he took advantage of his best opportunity in front of goal against Serbia, scoring a smart, looping header after a cross from Julian Gressel.

The USMNT interim coaching staff would be wise to give Vazquez as many minutes as possible to see what he can do up top, and to also persuade the forward to commit his international future to the United States.

Vazquez is still eligible to play for Mexico because the two January matches occur in a non-sanctioned FIFA window. He can be cap-tied to the USMNT if he appears in the Nations League.

The USMNT's pitch to Vazquez is that he does not have to wait long for a first-team call-up. He could be inserted into the starting lineup against Grenada. That decision may come down to Anthony Hudson. Team USA is still without a manager. Gregg Berhalter, the team's previous manager, was out of contract at the end of 2022, and his position is still in question. Following allegations of domestic assault, he revealed that he kicked Rosalind Berhalter, his now-wife, in the legs during an argument in 1991. U.S. Soccer hired an independent law firm to investigate Gregg Berhalter, and former Colorado Rapids manager Hudson has taken over as interim coach.

U.S. Soccer is also looking for a new sporting director and men's team general manager after Earnie Stewart and Brian McBride departed their respective posts this week. A head-coaching search could take months, especially if the high-ranking positions are filled first.

There is a scenario in which Vazquez impresses enough on Saturday to earn the starting No. 9 job for Hudson in March, so every minute is vital to see how he can follow up his scoring performance from Wednesday.

Cristian Arango, Cucho Hernandez Looking To Make Mark On National Team

The young American players are not the only ones fighting for first-team call-ups in FIFA windows.

All but one of the Colombian players called in to face the USMNT in Carson, California, have a single-digit appearance total on the international stage.

Cristian Arango and Cucho Hernandez are the most-known players of that bunch to MLS fans.

Arango has been a consistent force inside the LAFC attack alongside Carlos Vela for the last two seasons. He scored 14 league goals in 2021 and followed that up with 16 tallies in the Black and Gold's MLS Cup-winning season in 2022.

The 23-year-old Hernandez took MLS by storm last summer and fall by scoring nine times for the Columbus Crew.

Arango and Hernandez could break into Colombia's first team over the next four years leading up to the World Cup. A strong performance, albeit against a USMNT mix of veterans and young players, would boost their stock a bit within the national team.

That should be the overarching theme of Saturday's friendly. Most of the players on both rosters are trying to move their way up depth charts to begin the 2026 World Cup cycle on a high note.

Prediction: USMNT 1, Colombia 1

There are a lot of unknowns across both rosters at the international level.

Vazquez, Arango and Hernandez provide quality up top, but their teammates still need to feed them passes to set up scoring opportunities.

Neither squad has a lot of in-match chemistry at the senior level, and that could make the friendly look disjointed at times.

USMNT Fans Hopeful Despite Friendly Loss to Serbia After 8 Players Make Senior Debut

Supporters of the United States men's national team accentuated the positive following a 2-1 loss to Serbia on Wednesday.

The USMNT is in a transitional period with Anthony Hudson coaching the team on an interim basis. Hudson also selected a young squad for his January camp, with eight players making their senior debut against Serbia.

One of those debutants, Brandon Vázquez, was responsible for the United States' only goal.

Gabriel Slonina, who moved from Chicago Fire FC to Chelsea in one of MLS' biggest transfers last August, made the first of what could be many appearances in goal for the U.S.

Goalkeeper has historically been a position of strength for the USMNT, and the 18-year-old has all of the tools to become the next great shot-stopper.

Cade Cowell drew plenty of praise as well after posing a consistent attacking threat in Hudson's 4-3-3 formation:

The USMNT hosts Colombia on Saturday in Carson, California, for its last friendly until pivoting to CONCACAF Nations League play in March.

While a victory would be nice, the fixture presents Hudson with another opportunity to experiment and lay the groundwork for the future. Whether he's still the coach by then or not, this is a great time to build for the 2024 Summer Olympics.

The United States men's national team officially kicks off the 2026 FIFA World Cup cycle on Wednesday.

However, the friendly match against Serbia will be more of an afterthought compared to situations off the field involving the USMNT.

Manager Gregg Berhalter was out of contract at the end of 2022, although he was still considered a possibility to return. Further questions were raised, though, when U.S. Soccer hired an independent law firm to investigate Berhalter after he announced publicly that he kicked Rosalind Berhalter, his now-wife, in the legs during an argument in 1991.

Berhalter said he made the announcement publicly because an individual contacted U.S. Soccer with information that could "take [him] down" during the Qatar World Cup, where his team was eliminated in the round of 16. It was then revealed that the person who contacted U.S. Soccer was Danielle Reyna, mother of current USMNT player Gio Reyna and wife of former USMNT player Claudio Reyna.

Danielle told The Athletic's Paul Tenorio she was upset after Berhalter made public comments criticizing an unnamed USMNT player's conduct during the World Cup, which many presumed to be Gio Reyna after he featured sporadically.

Neither Reyna nor Berhalter will be present for the annual January camp, which typically features players based in Major League Soccer or younger players who have not broken into their respective first teams in Europe, such as Reyna for Borussia Dortmund.

Former Colorado Rapids and New Zealand manager Anthony Hudson, who was an assistant for Berhalter in the last World Cup cycle, will be in charge of the USMNT for Wednesday's meeting with Serbia and the clash with Colombia on Saturday in southern California.

World Cup participants Walker Zimmerman, Kellyn Acosta and Jesus Ferreira headline the USMNT's squad for the January matches, but they have not been talked about as much as new arrivals like Alejandro Zendejas.

Zendejas has played at the youth level for the United States, but he is also eligible to make a one-time switch to Mexico. The Club América midfielder will only be available for Wednesday's game before he returns to the Liga MX club.

The 24-year-old will be one of a few national-team prospects to keep an eye on inside BMO Stadium in Los Angeles against Serbia's "B" team, featuring young players and two MLS-based players.

Top Storylines to Watch

Alejandro Zendejas' Fit With USMNT

The January camp typically serves the purpose of identifying young or domestic talent and how they fit into the national team picture ahead of the qualification campaign.

But the USMNT resides in a new position this January because it does not have to qualify for the 2026 World Cup on home soil. It also does not have a manager to implement his system on the group.

The USMNT should hope for some individual talents to shine on Wednesday, though, and Zendejas may be the most important of those players expected to be on the field.

The 24-year-old has not committed to the USMNT or Mexico yet. El Tri fielded him in two friendlies in 2021 and 2022 despite not filing the official one-time switch between federations with FIFA.

The former U.S. youth international discussed his situation during the preparation for the match, per ESPN's Cesar Hernandez.

"I'll probably focus on the future once we get to that standpoint," Zendejas said. "I'm enjoying the moment, I'm enjoying the present. I'd rather live day-by-day. Once the moment comes to choose, or the future, I'll decide on that later."

Zendejas likely will not make his commitment any time soon because of the uncertainty surrounding the USMNT manager. His goal on Wednesday should be to gain chemistry with the attacking players on the field. That would at least give Berhalter, if he returns, or a new coach some sort of foundation to work with.

Zendejas' presence does bring some excitement to what is usually a bland fixture because of the lack of high-profile names that are busy playing in Europe. The FC Dallas academy product has six goals and three assists in 19 games for Club América this season.

An impressive performance would generate some buzz within the USMNT fanbase about what Zendejas could look like in red, white and blue in the future.

Future USMNT Stars On Display

The younger players in January camp with either zero or a small amount of USMNT caps should be the focus of the two upcoming friendlies.

Goalkeeper Gaga Slonina, who signed for Chelsea from the Chicago Fire in August, and midfielder Paxten Aaronson, who recently moved to Eintracht Frankfurt from the Philadelphia Union, are two of the prospects worth watching most.

Slonina had 12 clean sheets for the Fire in 2022 before he moved to England, while Aaronson gained European attention after his performances at the Concacaf Under-20 Championship. Aaronson's older brother, Brenden, plays for Leeds United in the English Premier League and featured at the World Cup for the USMNT.

New York Red Bulls full-back John Tolkin, 20, and San Jose Earthquakes forward Cade Cowell, 19, are a few of the MLS-based prospects worth watching to see how they perform at the senior level.

Hudson may choose to use Zimmerman, Acosta, Ferreira and Aaron Long in the game to provide some veteran presence and to help those players regain fitness with the MLS season on the horizon.

But the primary focus of Wednesday's game should be to integrate new players into the squad.

Newly minted American citizen Julian Gressel, who can play at full back or on the wing, is another one to watch, while 18-goal scorer for FC Cincinnati in 2022 Brandon Vazquez and 23-year-old Sam Rogers, who has developed into a reliable starter with Rosenborg in Norway after five years in the USL Championship, should also get a chance to impress.

Prediction: USMNT 2, Serbia 0

Do not expect a world-class match.

The USMNT is in flux, and Wednesday's game is more about individual development than the final score, and their opposition is unlikely to provide the toughest of tests. New England Revolution goalkeeper Djordje Petrovic and L.A. Galaxy forward Dejan Joveljic are the most recognizable players on Serbia's roster.

The USMNT should create a handful of decent chances regardless of which players start up top, and the experience of Zimmerman and Long will be relied upon to limit Serbia's opportunities in the final third.

The individual performances should mean more in the long run than the result, but it never hurts to win a game, even if it is a friendly with no head coach in charge.

USMNT Manager Anthony Hudson: Sense of 'Sadness' Around Team; 'Not a Nice Situation'

United States men's national team interim manager Anthony Hudson said the current state of affairs surrounding the team is "not a nice situation" after Gregg Berhalter's contract expired amid an external investigation into a report of alleged domestic violence.

"They set out with a big, lofty ambition, not just to go [to the World Cup], but to go there and represent themselves in a way that people would sit up and take notice of the team," Hudson told reporters regarding the USMNT players. "So when all this happened, I think it was [a feeling] of shame. It's sadness because all the attention has gone away from that. All the good work and it's been shifted in another direction."

Since the World Cup, the USMNT has been mired in controversy.

In December while speaking at the HOW Institute for Society's Summit on Moral Leadership, Berhalter alluded to a player who almost sent home from the World Cup for behavioral reasons. While the event was supposed to be off the record, his comments ended up going public, and it was quickly surmised that he was referencing Gio Reyna, the 20-year-old USMNT star who barely featured for the team at the Qatar World Cup.

In an Instagram post, Reyna acknowledged that he was "devastated" after learning he'd have a limited role in Qatar and that he let his "emotions get the best of me and affect my training and behavior for a few days after learning about my limited role."

He added that he later apologized to his teammates for his behavior, writing that he was "disappointed that there is continuing coverage of this matter (as well as some highly fictionalized versions of events) and extremely surprised that anyone on the U.S. men's team staff would contribute to it. Coach Berhalter has always said that issues that arise with the team will stay "in house" so we can focus on team unity and progress."

Claudio and Danielle Reyna, the parents of Gio, then informed the U.S. Soccer Federation about an argument between Berhalter and his wife but then-girlfriend, Rosalind, in the 1990s, when Berhalter kicked her in the legs.

Berhalter acknowledged publicly that the incident happened and released the following statement:

Danielle Reyna and Rosalind Berhalter were college teammates on the University of North Carolina soccer team and close friends at the time. Danielle Reyna said Berhalter's public statement "significantly minimize[s] the abuse on the night in question."

Berhalter said that situation was "an apparent attempt to leverage something very personal from long ago to bring about the end of my relationship with U.S. Soccer."

The contract of the former USMNT manager expired on Dec. 31. It is unclear what the next steps will be for the USMNT in its managerial role, outside of Hudson handling the interim duties for the time being.

"I've said yes to doing it for now and then my next huge responsibility is to the players," Hudson said of his current role. "Because we can't get all our players from overseas because they're not available, historically, this camp opens up a space for new players to come in."

Report: Brian McBride Won't Return as USMNT GM amid Gregg Berhalter Probe

Brian McBride will not return as general manager of the United States men's national team this year, according to ESPN's Sam Borden.

McBride's contract ran through the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. The news of his departure comes amid the U.S. Soccer Federation's investigation into coach Gregg Berhalter's past conduct.

McBride was hired as general manager of the USMNT in 2020. His departure comes amid a pretty significant shakeup for the program, which could be looking for a new head coach if Berhalter doesn't return.

Berhalter's contract as head coach of the USMNT expired after the World Cup. U.S. Soccer hired an independent firm to investigate him over an act of domestic violence committed around 1991.

The 49-year-old released a statement on Jan. 3 detailing how he kicked his then-girlfriend Rosalind during an argument shortly after they began dating in college. The two are now married and have children.

ESPN's Jeff Carlisle and Kyle Bonagura reported that Danielle Reyna, the mother of Gio Reyna, said she reported the incident to U.S. Soccer "after the news broke that Gregg had made negative statements about my son Gio at a leadership conference."

With Berhalter still being investigated, his status with the USMNT remains unclear. However, Borden reports that the fallout from his dispute with the Reyna family "makes it increasingly less likely" he'll be the head coach in 2023 and beyond.

The USMNT will begin its first training camp of the year on Saturday before taking on Serbia and Colombia in a couple of friendlies later this month. Assistant coach Anthony Hudson is overseeing camp and those two games.
