USMNT vs. Slovenia: Top Storylines and Predictions for 2024 Friendly

A year of opportunity awaits for the United States men's national team, starting with Saturday's friendly against Slovenia at Toyota Field, San Antonio, Texas (3 p.m. ET, TNT/Max).

Gregg Berhalter's squad have a full slate in 2024 and will compete in the last four of the CONCACAF Nations League in March before readying themselves for the Copa America in June.

A healthy portion of participants from the January camp could also appear at the summer Olympics in Paris during a run that will leave the quality and developmental prowess of American soccer nowhere to hide.

Slovenia is the perfect chance for Berhalter to run an eye over an inexperienced squad that is solely made up of MLS talents.

He has 17 uncapped players, including 13 who are young enough to feature at the Olympics, as the usual cohort stay away during this unofficial FIFA window.

Squad Integration the Most Important Factor

This camp provides a really important moment of assessment for Berhalter. It's fair to say most of the coach's main side are nailed on; nobody is dislodging the likes of Weston McKennie and a resurgent Christian Pulisic. Antonee Robinson isn't getting displaced, and Folarin Balogun's spot up front should be set for many years to come.

But international success stems from a settled squad. There are gaps that need filling so that suitable cover is available when a big name misses out. Berhalter's ability to identify these players during this camp is pivotal. It shouldn't just be about the result against Slovenia; who are the characters and personalities he wants to embed long term? Who adds to the whole even when they aren't on the pitch?

The best countries in the world often follow this philosophy. There's a reason Gareth Southgate still picks Harry Maguire and Jordan Henderson despite poor form for England. Their experience and leadership skills are key for younger players to settle in and contribute. Berhalter must have the long-term in mind and consider the entire make-up of his squad once the more recognisable names are back.

One Eye on the Olympics

It's no coincidence that Marko Mitrović, the US Under-23s coach, stands alongside Berhalter for this camp. Mitrović has experience with this group and should be able to offer useful advice, but he'll also be looking deep into how they perform with greater attention ahead of squad selection for Paris.

Aidan Morris' aggressiveness in midfield is likely to underpin any good work the Americans do against an inexperienced Slovenia team. The Columbus Crew player knows what it takes to land silverware after starring in his side's MLS Cup win and his energy can set the tone for others to impress.

The route to the USA's main squad is at least now obvious: get the win here, perform at the Olympics and there's likely places up for grabs in Berhalter's main selection.

Prediction

United States 2, Slovenia 0

Berhalter will absolutely be looking for a solid victory. Slovenia's experimental squad should face a team that is full of purpose ahead of setting the tone for a new era.

While this match will prove to be a small step along an exciting road for the USMNT in 2024, it's important Berhalter and his staff find the talent to fill out the main squad. He'll want to see a motivated, gutsy performance that leaves the right type of difficult decisions to be made.

USMNT's Sergiño Dest Apologizes for 'Unacceptable, Selfish and Immature' Acts in Loss

Monday was largely a night to forget for the United States men's national soccer team in large part because of right-back Sergiño Dest, even though it qualified for the 2024 Copa America during a 2-1 loss to Trinidad and Tobago.

Dest was sent off with a red card via a second yellow card and apologized on Instagram in the aftermath.

"I want to apologize to my Teammates, Staff, Fans and whole nation for my behaviour it was unacceptable, Selfish and immature I let my team down!" he wrote. "It's something I have to learn from and it won't happen again!"

The Americans entered the game up 3-0 on aggregate thanks to Thursday's win, so there wasn't much pressure on the overall outcome. A first-half goal from Antonee Robinson seemed to eliminate any reason for worry, as Trinidad and Tobago needed to outscore the United States by five from there to change the result.

Yet Dest punted the ball into the stands out of frustration and then continued to argue with the official.

He was given a red card through a second yellow much to the dismay of teammates Tim Ream and Matt Turner, who made it clear to Dest how upset they were with him as he walked off the field.

"He apologized to the group. He said it's not going to happen again," coach Gregg Berhalter said, per Kyle Bonagura of ESPN. "As a team, the players, the staff, we need to hold him accountable because it's inexcusable. It really is. And we were very firm with our words after the game.

"He put a number of guys in jeopardy, made a number of guys do a lot of extra work in this weather, and it's inexcusable."

Dest was also issued a red card against Mexico in the Nations League semifinals earlier this year, and he will be unavailable for the Nations League semifinals in March.

Bonagura noted he is the first American player since 1990 to be issued two red cards in the same calendar year.

Yet to hear Dest say it in his apology, it won't happen again.

USMNT Advances Despite Loss to Trinidad and Tobago as Sergiño Dest Ripped by Fans

The United States Men's National Team may be advancing to the semifinals of the CONCACAF Nations League following a 2-1 loss to Trinidad and Tobago on Monday night, but it wasn't the type of performance that will inspire any confidence.

Thanks to a 3-0 victory Thursday night against T&T in the first leg, the US managed to squeak by on a 4-2 aggregate score line, punching their ticket to next summer's Copa America tournament in the process.

Now Gregg Berhalter and Co. will have the opportunity to to test themselves against some of the best sides in the world like Argentina, Brazil and Colombia.

However, celebrations were muted as there could not have been a more bleak way of passing through to the next round, especially when considering the performance of right back Sergiño Dest—who's supposed to be one of the best players in the squad.

Up 1-0 in the 39th minute, Dest—who assisted the US' goal—became unhappy with a referee decision and proceeded to throw a tantrum, even punting the ball into the stands before receiving back-to-back yellow cards and getting sent off the pitch.

Dest rightfully received the full anger of his teammates as he walked off. A few minutes later it became clear why as Reon Moore went on to equalized just a few minutes before halftime.

Alvin Jones went on to get the winner in the 57th minute with the Americans down to 10 men.

Dest got ripped by USMNT fans for his poor decision.

Dest and the rest of American team will now head back to their respective club teams with the international break ending on a low note.

Gio Reyna, Pepi, Robinson Applauded by USMNT Fans in Win vs. Trinidad and Tobago

It took 81 minutes, a Noah Powder sending-off and more aimless crosses and scuffed shots than one could count. But finally, mercifully, Ricardo Pepi bailed out the USMNT on Thursday night in the Nations League quarterfinals.

His 82nd minute goal broke the dam for the United States in what was ultimately a 3-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago, giving them a three-goal advantage in aggregate in the two-leg matchup between the countries.

Given the USMNT's struggles to create viable chances up until that point against a Trinidad and Tobago side that unabashedly parked the bus and refused to move, Pepi's opening tally felt more like a reprieve than a celebration.

But joy would follow. Antonee Robinson's wonder-strike just four minutes later—and his subsequent back flips to celebrate the moment—was a thing of pure beauty.

And when Gio Reyna added a third, the job was well and truly done.

So those three players earned the plaudits on social media after the conversation, and justifiably so:

https://twitter.com/LeanderAlphabet/status/1725363704064020920

But there is a deeper conversation to be had about Thursday's game. The United States solved the puzzle eventually, yes, but for long stretches they seemed so hapless and aimless while shuffling the pieces.

The first half, to put it kindly, was a slog:

And that comes back to Gregg Berhalter's tactics, as always. At home, up and goal and facing an inferior opponent in Trinidad and Tobago, yes, the United States found the goals they needed before the road rematch in this quarterfinal.

Such conditions won't be the norm, of course. Tougher opponents won't allow the United States 75.6 percent of possession, or be held to a single shot while the United States peppers them with 26 shots of their own (eight on target) and a 10-0 advantage in corners.

Sure, breaking down an opponent that sits in a deep, compact block is never easy, and the United States was without its best player, Christian Pulisic, on Thursday.

But there remains the feeling that the United States does precisely what is supposed to do—in this case, beating an overmatched and eventually undermanned Trinidad and Tobago—and nothing more. No overachieving, no handling business without fraying nerves.

Perhaps that's splitting hairs after a win. But ask most USMNT fans what their takeaway from Thursday's match was and it would probably be some variation of, "Took them long enough."

That ultimately falls on Berhalter. Don't be deceived by the late goals from Pepi, Robinson and Reyna—this was not a relaxing evening for the USMNT.

But it should have been.

The United States men's national team will embark on a journey to three-peat as CONCACAF Nations League champions when they take on Trinidad and Tobago in two quarterfinal matchups this month.

The U.S. will host Trinidad and Tobago at Q2 Stadium in Austin, Texas, on Nov. 16 before traveling to Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago on Nov. 20.

The United States announced its official roster for the two pre-Thanksgiving matchups on Thursday, and it does not include Christian Pulisic or Tim Weah due to hamstring injuries.

Pulisic being left off the USMNT roster comes as little surprise after the AC Milan forward suffered an injury in the second half of a 2-1 win over Paris Saint-Germain in Champions League action on Tuesday.

The Athletic's Greg O'Keeffe reported Thursday that Pulisic avoided a "serious injury," which is a sigh of relief for AC Milan and the United States, as he is a vital piece in the attack for club and country.

As for Weah, the Juventus midfielder suffered an injury in the first half of a Serie A matchup against Hellas Verona last month and remains sidelined.

With Pulisic and Weah off the roster, there will be opportunities for other players to step up in their absences, including Ricardo Pepi and Gio Reyna.

Pepi is enjoying a solid start to the 2023-24 season with Eredivisie club PSV Eindhoven. In nine league matches, he has tallied three goals and one assist.

Reyna, meanwhile, has appeared in just three league matchups for Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund and has yet to record a goal or an assist. He has been out of Edin Terzic's starting XI after being benched for a loss against Bayern Munich.

It's becoming clear that Terzic prefers other options in Dortmund's attack, leaving Reyna without consistent minutes, though he hasn't seen the field consistently over the past few seasons due to injuries limiting his opportunities.

Now that he's on the USMNT's November roster, it's time for the 20-year-old to step up.

Other players to be left off the USMNT roster include Tyler Adams, who is dealing with a hamstring injury, and Josh Sargent, who is working through an ankle ailment. Goalkeepers Zack Steffen and Sean Johnson are also sidelined with injuries.

Despite the absences of some key players, the United States should be able to pull out victories over Trinidad and Tobago this month. If they move on to the next round, the Americans will be hoping for the returns of Pulisic and Weah in particular.

Christian Pulisic, Gio Reyna Applauded by Fans as USMNT Rout Ghana in Friendly

It was a big night for Christian Pulisic, Gio Reyna and the United States men's national team.

And in the United States' 4-0 victory over Ghana on Tuesday night, the 20-year-old Reyna reminded manager Gregg Berhalter why he should always be one of the first names on the team sheet whenever he suits up for the Stars and Stripes.

Reyna recorded a first-half brace against one of the US' biggest international rivals, showcasing all of the abilities that have made him one of the most highly-regarded young players in world soccer.

The Borussia Dortmund star got the scoring going early as he netted his first goal for the national team in over two years in the 10th minute. He also capped off a dominant first half for the Americans with the team's fourth goal of the opening 45 minutes and his second of the night.

Reyna's second score was particularly impressive as it came off an indirect free kick from around the penalty area that he nailed right into the roof of the net, sending the crowd at Geodis Park into a frenzy.

But Reyna wasn't the only US star to step up big.

Christian Pulisic and Folarin Balogun also got on the score sheet to help complete the rout in 19th and 22nd minute, respectively.

Balogun keeps on impressing as he has scored in all three international windows that he's played in for the Americans.

US Fans couldn't be happier with Reyna and the rest of the team's performance.

While Reyna, Pulisic, Balogun and the rest of the American squad will head back to their respective clubs for the next month, they'll await preparations for the next international break when they'll be competing in the CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinals.

USMNT's 'Shocking' Defense Overshadows Christian Pulisic Goal in Loss to Germany

It was all looking good for the United States. Christian Pulisic had scored a stunning goal in the 27th minute, the Americans were looking fluid going forward and confidence seemed to be growing against a talented but somewhat disjoined Germany side.

But while the United States had looked threatening in attack, there were cracks in the dam at the back.

The pressure only intensified after İlkay Gündoğan leveled things up in the first half, and the walls fully crumbled in a miserable second-half performance from the USMNT backline as both Niclas Füllkrug and Jamal Musiala scored to give Germany a 3-1 win in Saturday's friendly.

Frankly, it could have been worse. When the final whistle blew, Germany posted nearly 60 percent of possession and out-shot the United States 19-6 (7-3 on goal). Had the Germans been more clinical on their chances, especially in the first half, an entertaining but ultimately disappointing USMNT performance might have been a downright disaster.

And fans and pundits alike weren't about to let the Americans off the hook for a defensive and midfield performance that left much to be desired:

https://twitter.com/FamousManUtd711/status/1713291994393358571
https://twitter.com/the_damn_muteKi/status/1713293932216660004

The defending will ultimately overshadow what might have otherwise been a promising performance from the team's attackers. While Gregg Berhalter still needs to find a way to get the ball into Folarin Balogun with more consistency, Pulisic and Timothy Weah were fantastic off the wing.

Seeing Pulisic thrive at the club level since his move to AC Milan and score goals like the beauty he posted Saturday is certainly good news for the USMNT.

It's a moot point if the defense proves porous versus opposing attackers and flails at the ball like a toddler trying to swat a fly with a tennis racquet.

Such was the case on Saturday, and Germany punished the Americans for it. Berhalter and the defense have some serious questions to answer after that showing.
