Times (August 2008): “Football: Dorsey loses its quarterback to Cathedral: Josh Williamson, the starting quarterback at Dorsey last season as a sophomore, has transferred to Los Angeles Cathedral, joining another ex-Dorsey player, running back Kevin Ally. Williamson, however, could have a difficult time breaking into the starting lineup at Cathedral, where junior Shaun Alexander is firmly in control of the offense, Coach Kevin Pearson said Tuesday. Cathedral plays in the tough Del Rey League with Gardena Serra and Harvard-Westlake and is in the same playoff division as Oaks Christian. Williamson’s departure from Dorsey leaves the Dons’ offense in need of help. He was the key player during summer passing leagues, and his absence means that Crenshaw deserves to be the overwhelming favorite to win the Coliseum League title”

ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL?! (Week 1 CFB picks)

Aug 28, 2008

Football Fiends!

The LONG — 40 weeks! We should have built an Ark to get us through the long, dry, desert known as the weeks without college football–wait is over!

COLLEGE FOOTBALL SEASON STARTS TODAY. (Go ahead, I’ll give you time to digest that info.)

It’s going to be an all college football weekend this Labor Day and I can’t wait.

Without further ado, here are my Week 1 picks:

Thursday Games:

  • Wake Forest over Baylor 41-13
  • South Carolina over NC State 34-0
  • Oregon State over Stanford (I had a feeling about this game and almost went with Stanford, first “trust my instinct” lesson of the 2008 season) 38-26

Saturday Games:

  • Utah over Michigan ( I just can’t shake the feeling that RichRod’s Wolverines are still in a bit of chaos)
  • USC over Virginia (Prediction for final score: 31-14)
  • Florida over Hawaii (The spread here is Hawaii +34–not quite the Colt Brennan/June Jones days anymore, is it?)
  • Clemson over Alabama
  • Mizzou over Illinois
  • ASU over Northern AZ
  • UNLV over Utah State (Utah State is getting 12.5 points. UNLV won 2 games last year. Yeah.)
  • Oregon over Washington
  • Boise State over Idaho State
  • Nebraska over Western Michigan
  • Ole Miss over Memphis
  • California over Michigan State (Kevin Riley’s getting the start for Cal, not Nate Longshore, this should be interesting.)

Monday Games:

  • Tennessee over UCLA
  • Rutgers over Fresno State

I’ll be checking in throughout the weekend to update the wins and losses and comment. ENJOY the first weekend of the College Football Season! Only 11 more! (So sad, isn’t it? Shortest season in sports.)

Gerard Haran

The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Federal Savings Bank, let a much-needed win slip away in game two of their series against the division-leading Kalamazoo Kings.  They ended up losing the game 7-5 loss on Wednesday.  Washington took the early lead but slowly let it slip away until they finally lost the lead in the 7th inning.

Robert Lara

The AZL Padres lost to the AZL Royals Wednesday with a score of 5-3.  Lara was able to help by scoring a run, but it was not enough in the end.

Dan Leatherman

Dan did not play as the Suns had a double-header Wednesday due to the rain from Tuesday.  Both games were shortened and only 7 innings in length.

Kyle Gunderson

Only a day after Kyle Gunderson joined the Dynasty family, he gets the notice everyone’s playing for saying he is getting called up.  This is a great opportunity for Kyle as he has excelled with the Suns with a sub 3 ERA and his opponents posting a mere .184 batting average.  Gunderson is on his way to Potomac to play for the High A team.

Patrick Allen set to make Team USA debut

The Men’s World Championships marks the much anticipated first appearance of professionals at the World Championships. Allen continued to be among the elite bowlers on tour in 2007-08, winning a title for the fifth consecutive season on his way to finishing sixth in the points standings.  All five professionals representing Team USA finished in the top nine in points, however Allen knows nothing will be handed over to them easily in Thailand.

Anti-Doping Laboratory Equipment is Big Business at the 2008 Beijing Olympics

Aug 11, 2008

The China Anti-Doping Agency (CADA) spent approximately $10 million dollars and six years to create a new state of the art laboratory specifically for the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Roughly one quarter of that budget ($2.7 million) was used to purchase 60-80 various laboratory testing instruments. The primary beneficiaries of these purchases were the analytical laboratory equipment manufacturers Thermo Fisher Scientific, Agilent Technologies and Phenomenex (”Drugs at the Starting Line: The Olympics begin with new antidoping lab and measures to keep athletes honest,” August 11).

Stuart P. Cram, strategic marketing vice president at Thermo Fisher, reports that their company has numerous service engineers available 24 hours a day during the Beijing Olympics to maintain uninterrupted and efficient operation of the Thermo Fisher testing equipment. Chinese Anti-Doping Agency purchased several products from their company including:

  • (2) Thermo Fisher DFS Sector Field gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) systems;
  • (1) Thermo Fisher Delta V isotope ratio mass spectrometer - used to distinguish between “natural and synthetic steroids”;
  • (4) Thermo Fisher triple-quadrupole TSQ Quantum Access liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS) systems

Agilent Technologies supplies the China Anti-Doping Agency with the majority of their steroid testing and drug detection equipment. Stephen B. Crisp, international business development manager at Agilent, states that Agilent also has technicians available 24/7 to maintain the operational status of Agilent equipment that includes 18 liquid/mass stations and 19 gas/mass stations.

  • Agilent 1200 Series LC/MS units
  • Agilent 6400 Series triple-quadrupole LC/MS units
  • Agilent 6100 Series single-quadrupole LC/MS units
  • Agilent 6300 Series ion trap LC/MS
  • Agilent 7890A GC/MS units
  • (8) unspecified laboratory instrumentation

Crisp also reports that different screening methods are used for different sports depending on the performance enhancing drugs most prevalent in that particular sport.

The Beijing lab will use screening methods that vary depending on the drugs athletes tend to favor in a particular competition. “Different compounds are suspected in different sports,” Crisp explains.

Phenomenex is a manufacturer of solid-phase extraction columns used in both GC/MS and LC/MS equipment. The separation columns are used to prepare samples for analysis according to Terrell Matthews, product manager for Phenomenex.

Important to the efficient operation of GC/MS and LC/MS instruments at the Olympics are the solid-phase extraction columns that clean up and concentrate target compounds from urine for analysis, says Terrell Mathews, product manager for Phenomenex, a maker of separation columns. Sample purification steps can take 60% of a lab technician’s time and can be a significant source of lab errors, he says.

The new anti-doping lab in use at the 2008 Beijing Olympics will conduct approximately 4,500 drug tests during the Olympic games and will analyze samples for over 400 different drugs on the WADA list of banned substances in the following nine classes of performance enhancing drugs: anabolic steroids, hormones, beta-2 agonists, hormone antagonists and modulators, diuretics, stimulants, narcotics, cannabinoids, and glucocorticosteroids. Each different piece of testing equipment has a unique function in the drug testing process (”Olympics technology: Keeping ‘em Honest,” August 4).

Regardless of when or where a sample is gathered, its first stop after entering the testing lab is the Agilent 7890A gas chromatograph, which separates and detects the different components in the sample, isolating the banned substances from the normal biological molecules. The sample is vaporized with heat, and the gas enters the 7890A’s separation column. As the gas moves through the column, the different atomic weights of its component compounds cause them to travel at different speeds (the lighter ones exit the column first). By measuring the speed, amount and sequence at which the components exit the column, investigators can readily identify most substances on the banned list.

But some compounds, such as peptide hormones, are destroyed by the vaporization process, requiring use of a liquid chromatograph. Using the same principle as the gas chromatograph to separate molecules by atomic weight, the Agilent 1200 series liquid chromatograph substitutes a liquid solvent that moves through the column. The liquid solvent takes longer to separate the molecules but preserves the molecules that would otherwise be destroyed by the heat of vaporization.

“About three out of four samples are analyzed using gas chromatography, but use of liquid chromatography is increasing because many of the new compounds are destroyed by vaporization,” said Sheehan.

If either the gas- or liquid-chromatograph indicates a questionable substance is present, then the sample is submitted to the mass spectrometer, which can confirm the chemical identity of virtually any compound. The mass spectrometer measures the molecular weight of the questionable substance, producing a unique chemical fingerprint that is compared with the fingerprints of known banned substances, providing unambiguous confirmation of the gas- or liquid-chromatograph results.

Mission Critical: New Mexico State Football Preview

Aug 7, 2008

Hal Mumme is a man on a mission. After successfully completing several other missions, that included: Feathering his hair like a majestic bird, blowing snot-rockets on national television, and making people uncomfortable at WAC media events—Mumme has refocused his efforts this season on simply keeping his job.

Mumme is a complicated man...a man who likes to wear lettermen's jackets and drape snotrags towels over his shoulder. He also likes to lose football games.

BUT that is all changing this year...you see, Hal Mumme has a 'gut feeling' that this year's Aggie team will be successful. And if we know anything about Hal Mumme, it's that his gut feelings are usually correct. Let's see what they're up against.

Hooray mediocrity!

The Aggies return 15 starters from last season (and Chase Holbrook returns nearly all of his teeth), when they went 4-9...so you know those seasoned vets know how to lose quite well.

Eight of those returners are on offense...an offense that is equal parts excellent under the guidance of senior QB Chase Holbrook...and terrible (might wanna check this out again).

WR Chris Williams is a legitimate stud for the Aggies. He may be small, but he is fast and has soft hands. Williams had 772 yards receiving and 11 TDs in 2007 and he only played in eight freakin' games!

Chase Holbrook, when healthy, can really spread the ball around and routinely puts up big numbers and high passing percentages. Last season, a letdown by Holbrook's standards—he still managed to throw for almost 4,000 yards and toss 26 TDs. The headscratcher here is that they only won four games. Why?

Well, no rushing game to speak of is a good start. The Aggies top rushers from 2007 combined for only 1,037 yards and 7 TDs. "They're a passing team," you'll say.

But that doesn't matter, the Aggies are too predictable on offense—they have to get some production from their backs or Holbrook has to do too much. The Aggies put up an amazing -19 yards rushing against BSU last year. That's not good.

Defense wins championships...that's why NMSU has none.

New Mexico State's defense was ranked 94th in the country last year—giving up 430 yards per contest. That number looks pretty good, however, when you consider that, in scoring defense, the Aggies were ranked 107th.

These dubious rankings were enough for the Aggies to jettison defensive coordinator Woody Widenhofer (I'm not kidding),a guy who looked like the "time to make the donuts" guy and coached like him too, and bring in Joe Lee Dunn, a former Memphis D-coordinator, who worked wonders for the Tigers' D in the early 90's.

Dunn enjoyed (maybe that's too strong a word) stints in the SEC as well, bringing his defensive skillz to programs like Arkansas and Mississippi. Whether Dunn will be able to resurrect the Aggies' D remains to be seen, but expect some growing pains this year for the squad as they try to wrap their heads around his 3-3-5 defense.

If Dunn can turn the Aggie D around...the Aggies can make good strides—that is, until Holbrook and Williams graduate and the Aggies' one-dimensional offense stinks again.

Whuzzit mean?

Part of me really dislikes Hal Mumme (the part that comprises 99 percent of me)—so I'd like to see him get his sycophantic hieny kicked on a weekly basis. I love having coaches like Hal "the towel" in our conference because otherwise, it is really hard to get up for these layup games against the WAC bottom-feeders.

Chase Holbrook is a fringe NFL guy, and the Aggies certainly have some talent on offense...but until they abandon that gimmicky "Air Raid" offense and start playing some smashmouth football, they're going to continue to eke out three- and four-win seasons.

They get the Broncos in Las Cruces this year, so it should be a bit more interesting than the last tussle (wanna see this one more time?), but I think that the Crimson Aggies will only manage five wins this season against Nicholls State, UTEP, Idaho, La Tech and Utah State.

Sadly, this will be enough for Hal Mumme to stick around...but on the bright side, this will be enough for Hal Mumme to stick around.

In short, watching Aggie football is a lot like watching this commercial:

It hurts.

Jay Buhner: No.8 Mariner of All-Time

For 30 days, Baseball Tonight will reveal the top three all-time players voted by the fans. Participate by voting here. The All-Time Franchise players from the Mariners will be chosen on Tuesday, August 19th. Over the next couple weeks, I am going to countdown my own ranking of the ten players on the ballot.

Number Eight
Jay Buhner, RF 1989-2001

Jay "Bad to the Bones" Buhner, an all-time Mariners' fan favorite. His quirky personality and explosive bat will live on forever in Mariners' fans heart's everywhere. In 1988, he was acquired from the New York Yankees in a trade for Ken Phelps. This trade is considered one of the best made by the Mariners, ever.

Buhner would have his first significant season in 1991 when he hit 27 home runs and drove in 77 runs. After '91, Bones would go on to hit more than 20 home runs in seven consecutive years. Jay would reach his peak in the '95 season when he hit 40 dingers and drove in 121 runs.

His personal best slugging % was also reached in '95, at .566. Without him, the 1995 season wouldn't have been so successful. He ended up finishing 5th in MVP voting that year behind his teammate, Edgar Martinez.

The next year in '96 Buhner hit 44 home runs and drove in 144 runs, both would stand as his single season records. Despite this power surge, he kept his average at a respectible .271. The '96 season would mark his only all-star appearance in his career.

Over his fifteen year career, Buhner would go on to average 34 home runs and 106 runs batted in. Besides his bat, Buhner was known for his rocket arm and even won a gold glove in the 1996 season at right field.

After playing a minor role in the success of the 2001 team, fan-favorite Bones hanged up the cleats. After retiring, he would go on to broadcast a few games from 2003-2006, and now is working as a coach in the M's minor league system. His number, 19, stands to be retired soon. He has already been enshrined in the Mariners hall of fame with Dave Niehaus, Edgar Martinez, and Alvin Davis.

His infamous bald head and beard made him one of the most recognizable players in the Majors. Buhner Buzz Cut Night offered fans to get their heads shaved, and some fans were lucky enough to get their heads shaved by Jay himself. If you were bald or got your head shaved you were granted free admission.
