Long Time, No See: Back To Basics in Turkish Football

Dec 21, 2010

It's been a long time since I last wrote something on the Bleacher Report, my bad. It's been busy at my "normal" job, so my sports article pace has slowed down a little bit. But, whatever, I'm back.

Last April I wrote about the unexpected lead of Bursaspor in the Turkish Super League and it surprisingly ended that way. The Turkish Super League had four champions in its 50-year history until last year, now it has five.

Bursaspor's unexpected success in the national league has really raised many eyebrows. With a renewed broadcasting contract, now all the Turkish clubs are on a rise. Except the usual favorites!

The common favorites of any football season in Turkey are Beşiktaş, Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray. With the first half of the season ended, only Fenerbahçe is in the top three.

Beşiktaş is trailing by 14 points while Galatasaray is nine points above the relegation line, but 19 points away from the top spot. Fenerbahçe is nine points short of the current leader, Trabzonspor, whose latest championship in the league was over 20 years ago.

What happened? What forced the usual suspects to become ordinary?

The Turkish Super League does not have much of a reputation when compared to the other leagues in Europe. Therefore, its appeal for high class players is not very strong.

Before last year, only the top three teams of Turkish football were able to lure the classy feet of Europe (or South America and Africa). But now that the other clubs have much greater finances than they used to, they are able to lift the calibre of the players that they can bring in their boundaries.

Turkish football also lacks in finding local talent which is particularly bad considering the player restrictions. A club can start a match with five local players complemented by six foreign players.

Clubs can have two more foreign players on the bench, which, during the game, can only be substituted for a foreign player on the pitch. They can have two more foreigners who will not be able to start a game at all. Hard to explain, isn't it?

Teams are finding it difficult to recruit five local players which will form the core of the team. The total quality of a team consists of the blend of its local and foreign players. Since the local players' calibre is really not very distinct, when the "other clubs" started to purchase better foreigners, the difference between the three musketeers and the rest merely disappeared.

This season, the top spot is held by Trabzonspor, which is one of the usual early season favorites. They usually tend to fall back by midseason in the past 20 years except on one or two occasions.

But this season seems a little different. They've collected 42 points of a possible 51, and have lost only nine points with three draws and one loss. Impressive.

However, the team is not as close-knit as you would expect them to be. Still, their experienced manager Senol Günes somehow manages to keep them together. But they have some loose cannons on board which may cause them to fall apart as the season progresses and tension builds up.

So far, they have managed to channel any kind of pressure into positive output, but there are still 17 weeks of football ahead. One should not be considered a prophet to say that they would not be able to collect 42 more points in the second half.

That's all from me for now, hope to keep you guys updated more often.

EURO 2012 Qualifiers: Huge Blow To Turkey and Guus Hiddink By Azerbaijan!

Oct 13, 2010

This has to be the worst defeat In Turkish National Team history.

Low ranked Azerbaijan National team beat Turkey and shocked the world!

After losing to Germany in Berlin, four day before Turkey chocked against Azerbaijan..

Turkey suffered a huge set back to their Euro 2012 qualifying hopes after Rashad Sadygov's first-half goal earned Azerbaijan a surprise 1-0 win.....

With world famous coach Hiddink at the helm, Turkey lost two matches in four days!

After the match, Guus Hiddink said he never lost a two matches in four days, in his career!

He also said, losing to Azerbaijan is big disappointment for Turkish national team.

"Losing to the German national team - was not a tragedy, but defeat by Azerbaijan very disappointed us."

GUUS HIDDINK UNDER FIRE IN TURKEY.....

After two disaster match, Hiddink is under fire in Turkey, by Turkish media and Turkish soccer fans!

All the print media and soccer columnist in Turkey, are questioning Hiddink's and his assistant Oguz Cetin's credibility in the Turkish National team...

Even Hiddink's contract, with Turkish Football Federation was debated in the Parliament floor!

Democratic Left Party (DSP) general secretary and Denizli MP Hasan Ercelebi, raised the issue over the agreement with Hiddink.

The World famous coach Hiddink, is in hot waters in Turkey at the moment...

The master tactician, after unsuccessful period with Russia, looks like will have a tough time in Turkey too!

But , He is not the only person to take blame in Turkey...

TFF, Asistant coach Oguz Cetin and players deserves much of the blame too...

For Hididink, losing to Azerbaijan was the dark side of his career.

Lastly, losing to Azerbaijan for Turkish football, was huge blow and slap in the face!

Germany Too Strong For Turkey....Germany 3-0 Turkey

Oct 9, 2010

This has to be the worst Turkish National team, that I saw in a long time...

Turkish Football instead of going forward, it is going back to 80's again!

In Berlin, Germany, Turkish National team thrashed by Germany with the score of 3-0

We were never in the game .....

We had only one good chance in the beginning of the second half and Halil Altintop could not put the ball behind the net!

After Aurelio's injury in the 24th minute , Turkish team looked like, bunch of amateurs on the pitch...

Guuss Hidink's wrong player decisions for Aurelio did not help ether ,,,,,

Tuncay Sanli for Aurelio was wrong choice...

Everyone thought, Selcuk Inan, who was warming up, was going to replace Aurelio !

I just wonder The assistant coach Oguz Cetin, changed , Hiddink's mind?

It looked so awkward ......

Any way, Germany Beat Turkey 3-0 with and Miroslav Klose scored twice and German born Turkish kid, Mesut Ozil scored one...

Germany scored the first goal in the closing minutes of the first half by Klose with a header. when the ball came of the post and all the defender and keeper Volkan Demirel stopped, because they thought Klose was in off side position.

The German born young Turk, Mesut Ozil, scored the second goal in the 79th minute.

Three minutes left in the match Turkish keeper Volkan Demirel made a huge mistake by punting the ball to Klose's chest and he went in to score the goal between Volkan Demirel's legs!

After this result Germany is still perfect with nine points while Turkey is three points behind and they are same points with Austria....

After the match, Hiddink said," We could last with them for 25 minutes but after Aurelio's injury we just had too many problems"

"We played against a team that was dominant in all aspects of the game."

On the other hand happy German coach Low praised his players...

He said, "We dominated throughout and played a very good game."

Lastly, like I wrote before, this match was more than a soccer game...

It was history, World known German born young Turk, played against his mother and father's home land and scored a goal against them..

It was history in the books, for Turkish football and German football....

I am sure , some one in Turkey, hitting his head to the walls, not getting this young Turk , when they had the chance!

We all know who that person or people are!

Germany V Turkey ...It Is More Than A Game!

Oct 7, 2010

They are both at six points after two matches in 2012 European Championship Qualifying Group A standing...

Both teams have their work cut out for them!

Germany and Turkey missing very important players...

Although Germany will play the match in Germany its is going to feel like home for Turkish

National team with thirty thousand Turkish - Germans, who lives and works in Germany!

That is why this match will be home and home for both team,,,,,

What is so interesting about this match is , you have German born players playing for Turkey and German born Turkish decent player paying for Germany.

Altintop's and Nuri Sahin for Turkey and Mesut Ozil for Germany!

That is why this match is so unique ...

The last world cup sensation, Mesut Ozil, is the talk of Turkey and Germany this week!

Midfielder Toni Kroos will most likely partner with Sami Khedira instead of Bastian Schweinsteiger for Germany.

On the other hand , Arda Turan replacement will be Nuri Sahin or Tuncay Sanli...

Arda Turan cost a big controversy between Galatasaray and Turkish National team,,,

Galatasaray team claimed that Arda was injured and should never have called up for National team duty!

Germany leads the group from Turkey on goal difference.

Speaking to the media Turkish National team coach Hiddink said,"Germany always qualifies

for big tournaments, we don't know it any other way, and it is the favorite," Hiddink said. "But

we must show that it is our aim to be first in the group. We cannot underestimate Austria

either - the road is still long."

On the other hand , German coach Low is cautious about Turkey match!

He said "The Turks are technically strong - if you let them play, they're dangerous."

The last meeting between Germany and Turkey took place at the semi-final stage of Euro 2008..

Could this be the revenge?

On Friday, Germany face Turkey in a Euro 2012 qualifying match....

The scene will be awesome....Turkish and German flags will fly high over Berlin who ever wins this match.

In case of a draw , it will be a huge celebration for Turkish fans !

Lastly, this match will be historic for Turkey and Turkish people living in Germany!

The third generation German born Turkish kid Mesut Ozil will play against Turkey for the first time in Germany..

The match will start on Friday at 22;30 Turkey Time( 2;30 PM ET).

Turkey Beats Belgium In EURO 2012 Qualifying Match... 3-2

Sep 8, 2010

Belgium started and Turkey  put the finisihing touches in EURO 2012 qualifying match on Tuesday night In Istanbul Turkey.

A late goal  from Arda Turan helped Turkey  3-2 win over Belgium ....

Turkey'  first attack on Belgium came on the 16th minute  but, Tuncay Sanli missed a header!

Belgium scored the first goal of the match in the 28th minute  by Daniel Van Buyten Thanks to big mistake by Turkish young keeper Onur KIvrak.

The first half of the match ended with   Turkey being down one goal against Belgium.

But, things did change for Hiddink's Turkey  in the second half....

After pep talk by Hiddink at the half and bring in super sub Semih Senturk in to the match made a huge difference....

In the very early minutes of the second half in the 48th minute  Hamit Altintop  even the scored ...

Than super sub Semih Senturk , scored the second goal in the 66th minute on a Hamit Altintop's cross

But,  Belgium came right back to tie the match in  the 69th minute again huge mistake by Turkish keeper Onur Kivrak.

Daniel Van Buyten  scored his and his teams second  goal of the match...

But. like I said. in the beginning my article , in the 78th minute of the match, Arda Turan's goal  gave Turks the lead 3-2..

Belgium was man down after the 66th minute of match when   Vincent Kompany received his second yellow card of the match...

HIddink's new journey with Turkey started back to back two wins in the  Euro 2012 qualifying campaign .

After Germany, Turkey is the second place with same points in the Group A

Belgium after suffering another loss , they are pointless in the group!

This is good thing for Turkey....

Next up  for Turkey is  Germany...

This will be huge  match for both teams....

As we all know Germany has two German born Turkish players ....Mesut Ozil and  Serdar Tasci.

Lastly, Hiddink is trying to change some things in Turkey...

First mentally of players and getting them ready to  the next big level.

The question is  will they keep listening the world famous coach Guus Hidink?

The reason why I say that, there are still huge problems on the defense and  in the goal....

The crosses are huge thread for Turkish National team...

If we remember the two goals that were scored by Belgium were on crosses!

Lastly,  If you want to win the matches you have to have experience goalkeepers...

Turkey might not be lucky as they were against Belgium in every match!

It was good win but , like Hiddink said , it was not that pleasant!

Guus Hiddink's Turkey Start With a Win In Euro 2012 Qualifying Campaign

Sep 4, 2010

This was the first official match for Guuss Hiddink as of Turkish National team coach.

Before the match Hiddink was the talk of the town in Turkey because of his player selection to the national team by Turkish media!

Even in the press conference before and after the match the subject was his selection of players not the match against Kazakhstan.

Well, although Kazakhstan was no opponent on the paper for Turkey , there was a scare from Turkish press, that the national team was going to lose the match!

Even though Turkish National team did not play that good they managed the win the match in Kazakhstan 0-3

Turkey scored two goals within three minutes...............

Arda Turan opened the scoring in the 24th minute with an easy tap-in and Hamit

Altintop doubled the lead in the 26th with a beautiful volley from a corner.

Nihat Kahveci added the third in the 75th after dribbling past goalkeeper Andrei Sidelnikov.

After the match Guuss Hiddink said "We wanted to make a good start so that we did it"

At the press conference he congratulate Hamit Altintop, scoring "World Class" goal..

He also said,"Intelligence and experience is an important element for winning this match"

Turkish National team will host Belgium on Tuesday in Istanbul .....

Hiddink said "We will take our opponents seriously,''Absolutely.

Belgian team has players that players in well known leagues in the Europe!

Turkey Wants Trapattoni As a Coach Of National Team!

Jan 2, 2010

Turkish Football Federation(TFF) desperate  to hire Italian stallion, who is still under contract with Republic Ireland National Team.

The Turkish National team has been without the head coach since Fatih Terim resigned, after not qualifying , for the world Cup 2010 games...

Ever since than, TFF, is looking and talking to coaches with big names...

They try to talk to Hiddink, Low  and more names but, they were not successful....

And they don't want to give the head helm to the Turkish head coaches....

That is why Trapattoni is their last choice as a foreigner coach....

They are going to hire a  young Turkish assistant coach  to work with  Trapattoni too...

And the  farm team and Academy National team squad will be headed by Ersun Yanal.

They don't trust Ersun Yanal as a head coach of the National Team  but, they are going to hire him as a  farm team coach.....

Plus, they don't even give chance  for Turkish Football coaches to be interviewed for the head coaching job.....

How absurd ,  is that............

Coaches like Giray Bulak,  Samet Aybaba, Hikmet Karaman, Yilmaz Vural, who are well mutured on the job, won't even be looked at for this job....

When ,Fatih Terim toook the helm for the first time back in  1993......

He did not have the experience and knowledge ,these guys have now...

Turkish Football Federation should  do the same thing again....

Start fresh with Turkish head coach again....

I know, Giray Bulak has been considered  for this job, before....

Before they hired Senol Gunes , they approched Giray Bulak.......

Why not, hire him now.....

If you give him the chance that Fatih Terim got, He will direct this team to better positions....

Better than what Terim left the team in the 42nd place.....

Please give them a chance , they will get the job done in a long run...

Some Turkish news paper columnist think  Abdullah Avci and Tolunay  Kafkas and Ertigrul Saglam and Ridvan Dilmen The man who has not coaches in last ten years for the job....( He was famous player now TV commentator)

Give me a brake!

All theese  guys  have only 10 years or less head caching experience in the league..

Plus, Every ones, Budy in the Turkish media , Abdullah Avci, who coaches the team who has no fan bas at all!

They want to bring him to the National team coaching job....

The man  coached the  U- 17 National team and His current team Istanbul Municipality Team (Istanbul B B).....

And he started coaching  ten years a go.....

So, Turkish Football's number one agenda.  is National Team coaching job....

Who is going to be the next coach of Turkish National Team?

I  don't know the answer yet....

Because, TFF is not talking strait, at this matter....

But, behind close doors they are talking to foreign coaches for the top job in Turkey!

Currently, they are talking to the 70 year old  Giovanni Trapatton .....................

But, they have to talk to Irish Federation  too , because they still hold his contract...

We shell see.......

France 1-0 Turkey: Benzema Ensures Winning End To French Season

Jun 6, 2009

France finished their 2008-2009 season with a deserved win over Turkey in Lyon on Friday night.

Whilst the 1-0 scoreline was not the end of year flourish that under-pressure coach Raymond Domenech will have hoped for it was nonetheless a significant improvement from their performance on Tuesday which saw the side lose to Nigeria by the same score.

The only goal of the game came shortly before halftime when Nicolas Anelka was hauled down in the penalty area when clean through. Turkey’s Üzülmez saw red for the last-man challenge and Karim Benzema stepped up to score from the spot.

France should have won the match by a more handsome margin but were repeatedly denied by Turkish goalkeeper Volkan Demirel who made several fine stops.

Tuesday’s defeat to Nigeria in St. Etienne was notable for the fans turning on their own players, especially any with Lyon connections, but last night it was the Turkish fans who grabbed the headlines after they bombarded the pitch with projectiles and flares with fifteen minutes of the match remaining.

The referee was forced to stop play for five minutes as the Turkish players went to calm down their supporters.

Chelsea’s Florent Malouda was recalled and started his first match for Les Bleus in eight-months after his public criticism of Domenech in the aftermath of Euro 2008. Club team-mate Anelka operated primarily from the right-hand side in what is now becoming a familiar role at both club and now international level.

With Thierry Henry and William Gallas absent through injury and Patrick Vieira only on the bench Barcelona’s Eric Abidal captained the side for the very first time.

Abidal spoke after the win of his “pride” at leading the side but played down his overall role, “It’s huge to captain of France but the team is what matters, not who wears the armband.”

Domenech made a total of nine changes to his line-up for the match with only Anelka and Benzema retained from the defeat on Tuesday. He spoke afterwards of being “on the right path” and how he was pleased with the number of opportunities created, if left a little disappointed by his team’s inability to increase their winning margin.

France face their remaining crucial World Cup Qualifiers, starting with the Faroe Islands on August 12 before facing Romania and Serbiain September. Domenech will need his side to show more composure in front of goal and greater overall consistency if he’s to lead his side out in South Africa in one years time.

L’Equipe praised a much better balance in the side as compared with the defeat to Nigeria, but at the same tempered any apparent optimism taken from the result in stating that whilst they created several chances, not only were these not taken but they were almost exclusively created when facing only ten men.

Praise was given to the Turkey goalkeeper, but even still the chances created were not even taken and France’s only goal came courtesy of a penalty.

France: H. Lloris – B. Sagna, P. Mexes, J. Boumsong,  E. Abidal (c) – J. Toulalan, L. Diarra – N. Anelka (S. Govou, 59), Y. Gourcuff, F. Malouda (F. Ribéry, 59) – K. Benzema (A. Gignac, 46)

Turkey: V. Demirel –S. Sarioglu (I.Kas, 82), G.Zan, B. Hakan Kadir, U. Ibrahim – N. Sahin, T. Arda (Y. Simsek, 77), M. Topal (Y. Sercan, 73) – T. Sanli (c), H. Altintop (S. Senturk, 46) – M. Erding (G. Eren, 42)

Season Over in Turkey: What Next?

Jun 3, 2009

Part one and two were long gone by, even the epilogue has come to an end; the 2008-09 season of Turkish Turkcell Super League is now over.

As expected nothing changed in a tight and exciting last week. Things looked bound to change—let's give the credit to that—but in the end it all stood still.

The leaders, Besiktas won the league championship five points ahead of its closest rival Sivasspor. Besiktas won 2-1 while Sivasspor lost with the same score to Galatasaray.

Trabzonspor who have not managed to protect their lead against Fenerbahçe which stopped them from qualifying for Champions League. With Sivasspor losing, if they managed to beat Fenerbahçe on their home ground they would have been the second team for the most glorious football competition on earth.

Instead, they lost, ironically, with the same score, 2-1, with Fenerbahçe's huge upset, former La Liga top scorer Daniel Güiza clinching the winner in the fourth minute of the injury time. The critical goal also kept Fenerbahçe above Galatasaray which meant one less elimination round in the next year's UEFA League.

In 1996, they lost with the same score, yet again, which caused them the championship that season.

Even the relegation table stood the same. Konyaspor thought they survived during their win against Ankaraspor, but Antalyaspor's late goal against Ankaragücü saved the Mediterranean side, pushing Konya down.

Besiktas returned from Denizli to Istanbul late same they and were cheerfully greeted. On Sunday they received the trophy in their home stadium, Inonu Stadium where they merged with their fans.

The end of the season saw Aykut Kocaman leave the management in Ankaraspor. One of this year's overachievers for the first half of the season dropped down hard in the second half. They were candidates for European competitions but at some point in the season it turned into relegation candidate. The club is said to merge with Ankaragücü, the older club of the capital city, therefore rumours say it was the financial cuts which caused players' unhappiness.

Kocaman was a legendary goal scorer of Fenerbahçe and his name is mentioned for the new position created in that club, as sportive director.

With him will work Christoph Daum. Fenerbahçe is still looking for a financially less harmful way to terminate their contract with "Grandpa" but the rumours from Germany already confirmed Daum's move to Fenerbahçe.

The name, though not announced officially, already stirred the fans forums and email groups. Some are glad that a once successful familiar name has turned back while some are really upset that the "new era" is beginning with an "old name."

Daum's management of Fenerbahçe football club ended rather dramatically back in 2006, when they lost the title at the last week of the season to their fierce rivals Galatasaray. The defeat and the loss of championship is still said to be the biggest trauma in Fenerbahçe football team's history—and Daum still reminds people of that day.

Galatasaray's Bulent Korkmaz also resigned. Gala are looking for a replacement. Adriaanse, Houllier, Le Guen, and Schuster are the supposed candidates. Co Adriaanse looks the strongest possibility but both sides are implying that the discussions are ongoing and there has not been any agreements yet.

Trabzonspor's Manager Ersun Yanal, who was an ex-manager of Turkish national team, resigned earlier in the season. The team finished the season with the assistant manager in control. They lost only the last game against Fenerbahçe but won six in a row. They have tried to sign Senol Günes but the Korean club that he is contracted to did not let him go. Their search is still in progress.

Transfer window just around the corner the summer is already heating up. Kayserispor's star Mehmet Topuz is the main focus of the rumours. He admitted he thinks his future lays elsewhere, that Fenerbahçe and Besiktas were serious to sign him but no agreements still.

Bursaspor's Mustafa Sarp left on Bosman ruling and agreed to sign with Galatasaray. With Mehmet Topal and Ayhan Akman in front, a strong in team rivalry is awaiting.

Ankaraspor's Özer Hurmaci, Bursaspor's Sercan Yildirim, and Volkan Sen are also drawing some attention.

Besiktas will go to the Champions League. Tough rounds of elimination await Sivasspor to qualify for group stage—almost impossible. Trabzonspor and cup finalist Fenerbahçe qualified for the new UEFA Cup. Galatasaray also will take place in the competition if they qualify through the elimination rounds.

Jun 2, 2009

France 0, Nigeria 1 (International Friendly, June 2, 2009)

Oman 0 - South Korea 0 (International Friendly, June 2, 2009) South Korea should have won the match when they were awarded a penalty, but Ki Sung-yeung’s effort was saved twice by al-Habsi, who dived right to stop the penalty and to the left to stop Ki’s rebound attempt.
