Chris Wondolowski Breaks Landon Donovan's All-Time MLS Scoring Record

San Jose Earthquakes' Chris Wondolowski became Major League Soccer's all-time leading scorer on Saturday, scoring his 146th career goal to break the record previously set by Landon Donovan. He celebrated in style, with his first-ever four-goal match.
It was the second goal that handed him the record:
Here's a look at the first, which was also his first goal of the season:
Wondolowski decided to celebrate in style, adding a third to take his total up to 147:
And things got even crazier, as he added a fourth for No. 148:
Per sportswriter Paul Carr, it was a record-setting day for the striker in more ways than one:
He now sits one spot and three goals ahead of Donovan.
According to Goal, the veteran forward already owned the all-time record for goals for a single club, having spent the majority of his playing career with the Earthquakes. He also played for Chico Rooks and Houston Dynamo.
Originally drafted by San Jose, Wondolowski scored his first MLS goal for Houston in 2006, also against Chicago. He returned to Earthquakes via trade in 2009, spending the rest of his career with the team.
The American has scored double-digit goals in every season since 2010 and was the team's leading scorer for eight straight seasons. Danny Hoesen led the way with 12 goals last season.
Donovan scored most of his 145 goals with LA Galaxy but also had a lengthy stint with Earthquakes.
Wondolowski's club success never translated to the international level, where he has 11 goals in 35 appearances. He did finish the 2013 CONCACAF Gold Cup as the joint top-scorer, however, helping the Stars and Stripes win the title.
Earthquakes' Matheus Silva Emerges from Coma After Lake Tahoe Swimming Accident

San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Matheus Silva woke up from his coma Thursday after two days in intensive care.
As the team noted in a statement, the 20-year-old went to the beach at Lake Tahoe on July 4 but had to be pulled out of the water and resuscitated. He was brought to Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nevada, and remained in a coma until Thursday morning.
Silva was responsive upon waking up, but he will need to undergo a series of tests before he will be released from intensive care. He will then begin physical therapy Friday.
"We are incredibly excited and relieved to announce that Matheus Silva has awoken from his coma and is fully responsive," Earthquakes general manager Jesse Fioranelli said. "The entire Earthquakes organization is grateful for the invaluable effort by the doctors, players and staff at Reno 1868 FC and bystanders on the beach that contributed to Matheus being alive and well today."
The Brazilian has been a member of the Earthquakes since 2015 but has made limited appearances with the MLS squad. He is on loan with Reno 1868 in the United Soccer League.
Reno 1868 also released this message looking to find those who helped Silva in his time of need:
The young player is fortunate people were able to help in what was a scary situation for everyone involved.
Earthquakes' Matheus Silva in Critical Condition After Swimming Incident

San Jose Earthquakes midfielder Matheus Silva is in a "critical condition" according to the MLS club after receiving life-saving resuscitation after going swimming in Lake Tahoe.
The Earthquakes released a statement on Tuesday after Silva was pulled out of the water:
Silva, 20, is currently on loan with Reno 1868 FC, who also released a statement:
Reno's statement added that he is "stable" despite his critical condition.
Reno midfielder Junior Burgos is keeping Silva in his prayers:
Silva spent last season on loan with Phoenix Rising FC, and two former team-mates Luke Rooney and Carl Woszczynski also tweeted their support to him:
Meanwhile, Earthquakes captain Chris Wondolowski and fellow midfielder Tommy Thompson retweeted the following from MLS Players Union:
The Brazilian has made two appearances for Reno this season.
San Jose's Chris Wondolowski Kicks Nothing but Air in MLS Match
Chris Wondolowski has struggled to escape the memories of 2014's World Cup when he missed a clear look at the net.
Perhaps now he can replace it with Wednesday's whiff in MLS action.
The San Jose Earthquakes forward revved up for a strike against the New England Revolution, but he missed the ball entirely. As he flew in the air, the ball slowly rolled away from the net.
The match ended in a scoreless draw.
Double Red Card Fully Justified as Club America Beat San Jose Earthquakes in ICC

In one of the more peculiar happenings this pre-season, Tuesday's International Champions Cup match between the San Jose Earthquakes and Club America provided a rare moment of level-headed justice.
The double red card.

All too often we witness the provoked party receive punishment, rather than both provocateur and responding party, but referee Alejandro Mariscal, in conjunction with his linemen, made the right call after some contentious moments in the ICC's second match.
In the game's opening sequences, Club America were countering San Jose from a Quakes corner kick. Instead of letting Dario Benedetto run through his defence, Clarence Goodson elected to be cynical, and took a "professional foul," and in turn, a yellow card.
The collision, however, left Benedetto injured, as the forward twisted his ankle in ugly fashion, and the game took on a more aggressive tone after the incident. Both clubs were rather agitated with one another, and the pent-up frustration recklessly boiled over in the 45th minute.

Just before the half-time whistle, San Jose's Sanna Nyassi reacted strongly to an America challenge. The Earthquakes midfielder kicked out at Erik Pimentel, who was attempting to assist him in getting off the pitch. Paolo Goltz came over to defend his team-mate and escalated the situation, rather than defusing it.
Both Nyassi and Goltz were issued red cards by Mariscal, and the game, which was at 1-0 (thanks to 24th-minute Goodson header), was half compete.
While the situation itself was generally uninteresting, the response from the referee was out of the ordinary. The most common practice in incidents of violence is to locate the main culprit and eject them, not necessarily to find the reason or circumstance behind their actions.

In the end, the match's entertainment was not strongly affected by the double sending off.
America rallied from their one-goal deficit, and earned a 2-1 victory—receiving a 76th-minute equaliser from Andres Andrade and an 83rd-minute winner from Francisco Rivera.
What can be taken from Mariscal's refereeing is match officials should be more cognisant of why players do what they do. Players do not risk red cards for trivial reasons, there are usually mitigating factors to their actions and responses. Finding these reasons, and factoring them in the decision-making process should be standard practice around the globe, not just in pre-season matches in San Jose, California.

Moving into Club America's next match, they face defending International Champions Cup winners Manchester United on Friday in Seattle. It's doubtful any refereeing decision could save the Mexican outfit from Louis van Gaal's improving squad.
San Jose, after their exhibition duties, face California rivals Los Angeles Galaxy on Friday.
The MLS sides had conflicting results with Club America, and it should be intriguing to see which version of each club arrives at the StubHub Center.

Club America vs. San Jose Earthquakes: Team News, Preview, Live Stream & TV Info

If any competition signals the beginning of a new season, the International Champions Cup (ICC) has surely taken that particular mantle.
Hailing from the World Football Challenge (2009-2012), the past two pre-seasons have witnessed true European giants take their campaign's first steps on North American soil. Real Madrid were the inaugural winners of the ICC in 2013, followed by Manchester United last summer.
This year, the tournament has expanded further; more heavyweights are planning to indulge spectators in four continents and seven countries over 25 days.

Club America's 2-1 defeat to LA Galaxy was largely expected. The Mexican outfit have just begun their pre-season duties, while the American side were in the midst of their season. It's not getting any easier, as so are San Jose Earthquakes.
A bright spot from America's opening match of the International Champions Cup, however, was Colombian striker Carlos Darwin Quintero. The electric 27-year-old scored the first goal in just seven minutes vs. Los Angeles, but his efforts were not enough for victory.
For CF America to register their first positive result in the tournament, their strike partnership—spearheaded by Quintero—must be active, use their pace and finish chances.
Key Battle

The biggest takeaway from America's first ICC match was their incredible pace. Even with options resting from international duty, playing in the 2015 Gold Cup or given special permission to sit games out, Ignacio Ambriz has bags of pace and counter-attacking prowess on hand.
For San Jose manager Dominic Kinnear, his first order of business—and the match's most important battle—will be keeping the Mexicans' pace under control. That starts with smart possession, timely hold-up play from forwards and Clarence Goodson's back four being physical when necessary.
On several occasions vs. the Galaxy, Las Aguilas found themselves in promising positions after their opponents set pieces, but failed to convert. Having more game time and match fitness after their first match, America should find more joy in San Jose than they did in Los Angeles.

MLS: San Jose Part Ways with Manager Frank Yallop
Just hours before the weekend began, the San Jose Earthquakes announced that they were going to part ways with longtime manager Frank Yallop, per sjearthquakes.com.
In a statement released by Yallop through the club, it was learned that the decision was made between himself, club president Dave Kaval and general manager John Doyle.
“Dave, John and I met earlier this week and we mutually agreed that it was time for the club and me to move in different directions..... The ownership group has been very supportive during my time here. I would also like to thank Dave and John for all their efforts to help me put the best team on the field, while also building a professional atmosphere for both players and staff."
-Statement from Frank Yallop via sjearthquakes.com (June 7, 2013)
Yallop had been with San Jose since 2008 when the club was reborn in Major League Soccer after the previous franchise under the same name moved to Houston in 2006.
Last season was the most successful season of Yallop's managerial reign, as he led the Earthquakes to the Supporters' Shield title. The 2012 edition of the club also reached the semifinals of the Western Conference playoffs before they were eliminated by the Los Angeles Galaxy.
This season, Yallop's Earthquakes side has failed to produce a strong spell of results, with three wins and six draws spread sporadically between six losses.
Recently, the Earthquakes have lost three of their last four matches, including Saturday's loss to Real Salt Lake that saw the club get outplayed for an entire 90 minutes.
With Yallop now out as manager, Mark Watson will take over as interim manager. Watson was an assistant on Yallop's staff and will be in charge of the club for the remainder of the season.
Watson's first chance to right the ship in San Jose will come on June 15 when the Earthquakes visit Dick's Sporting Goods Park to play the Colorado Rapids.
With his departure, Yallop became the second reigning Coach of the Year winner in a major American sports league to be let go this week. George Karl of the NBA's Denver Nuggets was let go earlier this week.
