Washington Capitals v New York Islanders

After breaking Wayne Gretzky's record and becoming the NHL's all-time leading scorer with his 895th goal on Sunday, Washington Capitals star Alexander Ovechkin was celebrated by EA Sports in an epic hype video:

Ovechkin made history during the second period of Sunday's 4-1 loss to the New York Islanders. His teammates mobbed him on the ice as the game was paused to honor him.

Ovechkin was the EA Sports cover athlete for NHL 07 and NHL 21. He also earned the cover of 2K Sports' NHL 2K10.

Despite Sunday's loss, the Capitals still lead the Eastern Conference with a 49-19-9 record. Ovechkin will surely be motivated to add his second career Stanley Cup title to cap off his record-breaking season.

2025 NHL Stadium Series - Detroit Red Wings v Columbus Blue Jackets

Meredith Gaudreau, the widow of Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau, announced the birth of their son on April 1.

Gaudreau said Carter Michael, their third child together, has the "same middle name as his daddy" and "looks exactly like his daddy too."

"I love you so much my baby! We are going to have so much fun," she said. "I can't wait to give you the best life, my special boy forever."

Gaudreau first announced her pregnancy in September while speaking at her husband's eulogy.

Johnny and his younger brother, Matthew, were struck and killed in August by a driver while riding their bicycles on a New Jersey roadway. Their deaths came on the eve of their sister's wedding.

Matthew's widow, Madeline, was also pregnant at the time of his death. She gave birth to their son, Tripp Matthew, in December.

Sean M. Higgins was charged on two counts of aggravated manslaughter and vehicular homicide in connection to the Gaudreaus' deaths. He pleaded not guilty in January.

Canucks to Auction Ovechkin Signed Capitals Jerseys After Breaking Gretzky's Record

Washington Capitals v New York Islanders

The Vancouver Canucks are auctioning off six signed jerseys from Alex Ovechkin to celebrate the Washington Capitals star becoming the NHL's all-time leading scorer.

Ovechkin scored Washington's lone goal in a 4-1 loss to the New York Islanders on Sunday night, which moved him past Wayne Gretzky for the career record.

Hockey fans already had an opportunity to obtain a small piece of history. Sportico's Brendan Coffey reported in March that Heritage Auctions was selling off some game-worn sweaters, which included three from Ovechkin. Prices for the pieces ranged from $20,000 to $50,000.

Sooner or later, pieces of memorabilia from the record-breaking night could make their way to the market as well.

MeiGray, an online auction house that helps authenticate game-used items, said company president Barry Meisel personally attended Sunday's game. The company added that "select Ovechkin memorabilia and warm-up pucks directly off the ice from the momentous game will be available through MeiGray."

Many assumed Gretzky's scoring record was untouchable. He retired with 93 more goals than the next closest player, Gordie Howe. Ovechkin aside, Sidney Crosby is the only other active player with at least 600 goals.

While Ovechkin's peak didn't match Gretzky's, his longevity far surpassed that of "The Great One." The Russian star has 420 goals from his age-30 season on.

If there's another player who ever mounts a serious challenge on the new mark, he's probably not in the NHL right now.
