Patrick Kane said that there is mutual interest between him and the Detroit Red Wings ahead of NHL free agency, per Helene St. James of the Detroit Free Press.
Patrick Kane said there’s mutual interest in extension with Red Wings.
The 36-year-old Kane posted 21 goals and 38 assists for 59 points in 2024-25, his second season with Detroit.
Last offseason, Kane signed a one-year, $4 million contract extension to remain in Detroit. He had previously inked a one-year, $2.75 million deal with Detroit in November 2023 after recovering from hip resurfacing surgery in June of that year.
The three-time Stanley Cup winner and nine-time All-Star has played 18 NHL seasons, mostly with the Chicago Blackhawks. He spent 15-plus years in the Windy City before being traded to the New York Rangers during the 2022-23 campaign. He's now spent two years with Detroit, with the possibility of more time on the Red Wings.

For his career, Kane has posted 1,343 points (492 goals, 851 assists) while adding 53 goals and 85 assists for 138 playoff points.
Given his production since coming back from injury, it wouldn't be a surprise to see Kane and Detroit reach a deal here, although it's also possible another team makes a good offer, given his 2024-25 success.
Greg Cronin Fired as Ducks HC, Had 62-87-15 Record in 2 Seasons with Team

The Anaheim Ducks announced Saturday that head coach Greg Cronin has been fired after two seasons leading the team.
"I want to personally thank Greg for his tireless work and dedication to the team," general manager Pat Verbeek said in a statement. "He is responsible in many ways for the improvement we've seen from our young core. However, after several weeks of careful evaluation, I concluded we needed a change in direction and a new voice. This was an extremely difficult decision for me to make, but I felt it was necessary to continue our progress toward becoming a Stanley Cup contender that I know we can be."

Cronin, who was the first head coach to be fired since the conclusion of the regular season this past week, went just 62-87-15 in his two seasons for the rebuilding Ducks, missing the postseason in both campaigns. Anaheim last qualified for the playoffs in the 2017-18 season.
He previously served as the head coach of the AHL's Colorado Eagles (2018-23) and Bridgeport Sound Tigers (2002-05) alongside being an assistant coach in the NHL for the New York Islanders (2014-17) and Toronto Maple Leafs (2011-14).

The Ducks do have an exciting young core to build around, led by 22-year-old center Mason McTavish (22 goals, 30 assists in 2024-25), 20-year-old center Leo Carlsson (20 goals, 25 assists) and 21-year-old winger Cutter Gauthier (20 goals, 24 assists), alongside 21-year-old defensemen Pavel Mintyukov and Olen Zellweger. They also have the eighth-best odds to win the NHL lottery and likely will hold a top-10 pick to add even more talent to the mix.
THE DUCKS WIN IN OVERTIME! 👏

So the future appears to be bright for the young Ducks, though it remains to be seen who they will name to lead them into this next chapter.
"As much as it's disappointing tonight, I think from the big picture we took a step in the right direction," team captain Radko Gudas told reporters on April 3 after the team was officially eliminated from playoff contention. "You can see the guys here that are young and wanted to get better, they want to get better every game we play. I thought for us, obviously not a successful year because of (missing) the playoffs, but I think it was a step in the right direction for the organization and the future is going to be bright if we can keep this group together."
Gabriel Landeskog 'An Option' for Avalanche in NHL Playoffs vs. Stars, HC Bednar Says

After missing the past three seasons due to chronic knee issues, veteran Colorado Avalanche forward Gabriel Landeskog could potentially make his NHL return during the 2024-25 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
According to B/R Open Ice, Avalanche head coach Jared Bednar said Friday that Landeskog "is an option" for the Avs during their upcoming first-round playoff series against the Dallas Stars.
After skating with the team and getting back into playing condition, Landeskog was temporarily sent to the Avs' AHL affiliate in the Colorado Eagles.
Playing his first professional games in three years, Landeskog recorded one goal and one assist in two games with the Eagles last week.

GABRIEL LANDESKOG GOAL ALERT 🚨
His tally in @TheAHL is his first goal in 1,027 days!
The 32-year-old from Sweden was originally the No. 2 overall pick by Colorado in the 2011 NHL draft.
Just one year after getting drafted, the Avs named Landeskog their captain, making him the youngest captain in NHL history at the time at just 19 years of age.
Over his 11 NHL seasons, Landeskog appeared in 738 regular-season games, recording 248 goals and 323 assists for 571 points. He also registered 27 goals and 40 assists for 67 points in 69 playoff games.

A winner of the Calder Memorial Trophy as NHL Rookie of the Year and a one-time All-Star, Landeskog also helped the Avalanche win the Stanley Cup in 2022.
Landeskog finished with 11 goals and 11 assists for 22 points in 20 postseason games during that Cup run, and he has not appeared in an NHL game since then.
Although it is difficult to predict how much of an impact Landeskog will have if activated given how much time he has missed, he brings a ton of experience, leadership and toughness to the table.

Even if he plays a bottom-six role, he could bring a great deal of value to Colorado's lineup based on his past playoff excellence.
Since Landeskog last played, the Avs have been unable to make another deep playoff run despite their talent.
In 2022-23, they were eliminated in the first round, and they were knocked out in the second round of the playoffs last season.

The 102-point Avalanche have a tough first-round matchup ahead against the 106-point Stars, who acquired former Avs superstar forward Mikko Rantanen from the Carolina Hurricanes at the trade deadline.
However, the Stars will be without one of their best players to begin the postseason, as Dallas head coach Pete DeBoer said Friday that leading goal scorer Jason Robertson is week-to-week with a lower-body injury.
That coupled with the potential return of Landeskog gives Colorado a great deal of momentum entering Saturday's Game 1.

Three of the best NHL players from this generation got together to celebrate Alex Ovechkin becoming the league's all-time leading goal-scorer.
Following the Pittsburgh Penguins' 5-2 victory over the Washington Capitals on Thursday night, Ovechkin was gifted a Rolex watch by Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.
Ovechkin did score in the loss, giving him 897 for his career and 44 this season. He surpassed Wayne Gretzky's mark of 894 goals on April 6.
Prior to puck drop on Thursday night, the Penguins honored Ovechkin with a video tribute congratulating him on passing Gretzky.
Pittsburgh head coach Mike Sullivan told reporters after the game about the joy of being able to watch Ovechkin and Crosby play in the NHL at the same time:

"[Crosby and Ovechkin] are two of the greatest players of all time. How fortunate are we that we get to see it up close and have for how many years now? The fact that they play in the same division is incredible because that rivalry between Washington and Pittsburgh, and between Ovi and Sid, has been so much fun just to witness up close."
Crosby was also involved in the outcome on Thursday night, scoring in the second period to give the Penguins a 3-1 advantage.

Thursday marked the 73rd all-time meeting between Ovechkin and Crosby since the 2005-06 season. The Penguins have a 42-27-4 record in those games. Ovechkin has a 38-33 advantage in goals, but Crosby has the 95-68 edge in points.
This was also the 11th time both players have scored goals in the same game.
There was nothing at stake in terms of playoff positioning for the two teams in the regular-season finale. The Capitals wrapped up the No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference on April 10. Pittsburgh was officially eliminated from playoff contention on April 6.
Ovechkin and the Capitals will open the Stanley Cup Playoffs on Monday when they host the Montreal Canadiens in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference first round series.
Alex Ovechkin Says He's 'Not Retiring,' to Return for Final Year of Capitals Contract

Alex Ovechkin said he plans to return at least one more season after setting the all-time NHL goalscoring record during his 20th campaign with the Washington Capitals.
When asked if it was important to match up with Sidney Crosby one more time during Thursday night's regular season finale against the Pittsburgh Penguins, Ovechkin answered: "I'm not retiring, so."
Alex Ovechkin was asked if it was important to go against Sidney Crosby one more time: "I'm not retiring, so."
Ovechkin, who will turn 40 ahead of the 2025-26 season, is signed for one more year with the Capitals.
After inking a 13-year, $124 million deal with the Caps in 2008, Ovechkin signed another five-year, $47.5 million contract in 2021. He is currently set to hit unrestricted free agency in 2026.
Despite spending a month of his age-39 campaign sidelined with a broken leg, Ovechkin surpassed Wayne Gretzky's record for the most goals in regular-season league history by scoring his 896th against the New York Islanders on April 6.
When asked Monday on the Pat McAfee Show how much longer he thinks he can play, Ovechkin answered, "Well, I have one more year."
"We'll see what's going to happen. I'll be honest with you, I love the team, I love being around the boys, and as long as I can, I will try to stick around and put my 'great body', how you said, in the NHL," Ovechkin told McAfee.

The Capitals are gearing up for a first-round series against the Montreal Canadiens, who clinched the last playoff spot with a Game 82 win over the Carolina Hurricanes. The puck drops for Game 1 on Monday night in Washington D.C.
Before then, Ovechkin and the Caps will close out the regular season against their perennial rivals, who have already been eliminated from playoff contention despite Crosby's 20th straight point-per-game campaign.
"When we came into the league… it was a different system, different style of game," Ovechkin said about Crosby on Thursday (h/t Penguins team reporter Michelle Crechiolo.) "Two decades, we kind of transform ourselves to stay at the same level, and show that yeah, we're pretty good players."
Ovechkin's 20th regular season will wrap up Thursday night with a 7 p.m. ET puck drop against the Penguins.
