Luka Dončić Rumors: Nuggets Eyed PG to Join Jokić, Kings Rejected Trade in 2018 Draft

The Denver Nuggets made a play for Luka Dončić in the 2018 NBA draft, according to longtime Nuggets insider Mike Singer.

Singer, who's now working for the team, divulged on the newest episode of Brian Windhorst's Hoop Collective podcast that Denver "had designs on pairing Nikola Jokić with Luka Dončić."

Per Singer, the Nuggets reached out to the Sacramento Kings, who had the No. 2 overall pick, about trading up and offered a package of Gary Harris and two first-round picks.

With the benefit of hindsight, Sacramento would've been better off taking that deal instead of doing what it actually did. Selecting Marvin Bagley III was one of the biggest draft whiffs in recent memory considering Dončić, Jaren Jackson Jr. and Trae Young were the next three players off the board.

Denver's offer was arguably less attractive than what the Mavericks gave up to get Dončić, though. The Atlanta Hawks got Trae Young and a protected first-rounder in 2019, which they used on Cam Reddish.

Harris has been a solid two-way guard across his 11 years in the league but clearly not the franchise cornerstone that Young quickly became in Atlanta. First-round picks from the Nuggets were of limited value at the time, too, because they had emerged as a playoff contender no longer picking in the lottery.

Singer said "we have a hell of a what-if" if Denver had been willing to include Jamal Murray in negotiations.

During the 2019 offseason, Singer reported the team was also resistant to overtures from the New Orleans Pelicans to give up Murray in an Anthony Davis swap.

The Nuggets won a title in 2023 with Murray playing a critical role in the postseason. That alone is enough to justify the faith the front office had in the dynamic guard.

Still, it's impossible not to ponder what the franchise could've achieved if Dončić had arrived right as Jokić was ascending to elite status.

Anthony Edwards Fined $35K for Middle Finger Gesture During Wolves' Win vs. Kings

Anthony Edwards' decision to flip off the crowd at the Golden 1 Center during the Minnesota Timberwolves' 130-126 overtime win against the Sacramento Kings turned out to be a costly gesture.

NBA executive vice president Joe Dumars announced on Sunday that Edwards has been fined $35,000 for making an obscene gesture on the playing court.

The incident occurred late in the first quarter when Edwards looked into the crowd and flipped them off. It's unclear if there was anything that prompted the reaction, or if he made the gesture in the heat of the moment.

Edwards had a nice rebound performance against the Kings after a rough three-game stretch. He finished with 36 points on 14-of-27 shooting in 42 minutes, including a poster dunk on Domantas Sabonis.

Edwards' outing helped the Timberwolves stave off a 60-point performance from De'Aaron Fox. It's the highest single-game point total for any player this season, surpassing the 59 points from Giannis Antetokounmpo on Nov. 13.

The T-Wolves were able to hold on for the win, despite blowing a 16-point lead in the fourth quarter. Edwards scored seven of the team's 15 points in the overtime period to help them snap their three-game losing streak.

Edwards is having the best season of his career to start the 2024-25 campaign. He's averaging 28.4 points per game on 42.4 percent three-point shooting in 13 starts.

The Timberwolves got back over the .500 mark with their win over the Kings, improving to 7-6. They will go for a second straight victory on Sunday against the Phoenix Suns at the Target Center.

After his Dancing With the Stars exit on Tuesday, Dwight Howard is ready to move on to new endeavors.

The veteran big man is looking for another shot in the NBA, and he has a team in mind. On Kevin Garnett's podcast, All the Smoke, Howard made his pitch to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

"OKC, your boy is ready," he said. "What's happening? Y'all need a big. Y'all need somebody that's going to bring some energy. I ain't got nothing to do neither, I just got finished dancing. Me and (Alex Caruso) together, championship. I'm just saying, we did it before. Y'all already got a superstar, y'all just need somebody who know how to play defense. That's certified."

Oklahoma City is dealing with some early-season injury woes in the front court as Chet Holmgren, Isiah Hartenstein and Jaylin Williams are all currently sidelined.

Holmgren suffered a pelvic fracture earlier this week and won't get an update on his status for at least eight weeks. Hartenstein, who has a small, nondisplaced fracture in his left hand, is out for a few more weeks while Williams is working his way back from a hamstring strain.

The 38-year-old Howard has not played since the 2021-22 season when he put up 6.2 points and 5.9 rebounds off the bench for the Los Angeles Lakers. He spent one season in 2022-23 playing with the Taoyuan Leopards of the T1 League in Taiwan.

Howard, once an unstoppable force in his prime, likely wouldn't be a huge difference-maker for the Thunder, but as he said, he could bring some energy and experience to the young team.

Anthony Edwards Says T-Wolves Players Have to 'Mature' After Loss to Blazers

Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards placed the blame on himself and his teammates after the Wolves lost 106-98 to the Portland Trail Blazers.

It was the Wolves' third straight defeat.

"We got the answers. The coaches give us … the answers," Edwards told reporters in the locker room. "We just not doing it as a team, one through 15. They give us the answers every night. We come in here at 35 [minutes] on the night, and they tell us what we need to do to win the game, and somehow we don't do it every night. We got to get back to it. We got to mature, man."

Julius Randle and Rudy Gobert struck a similar tone with their postgame assessments:

Minnesota shot 39.4 percent from the floor as a team and went 7-of-39 on three-pointers. The Wolves were also out-rebounded 47-41 and allowed 52 points in the paint to a rebuilding Blazers squad. Shaedon Sharpe's 33 points for Portland were a career high.

Twelve games is too early for a team to start panicking, but it's understandable why fans might be concerned with how the Timberwolves are performing.

Minnesota has slipped from first to ninth in defensive rating. The team is 25th in rebounding average despite having Randle and Gobert to anchor the frontcourt. Donte DiVincenzo is shooting just 30.6 percent from deep.

One look at the Western Conference standings points to how tight the playoff race is likely to be. The Dallas Mavericks are in 12th but only 4.5 games back of the first-place Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Timberwolves can't afford to throw away games—let alone two straight—against lesser opponents such as Portland. The comments from Edwards, Randle and Gobert speak to the kind of urgency the players need to display in order to halt their current slide.

The Oklahoma City Thunder are one of the hottest teams in the NBA at 9-2, and they gave fans another reason to be excited on Tuesday.

The Thunder unveiled their City Edition uniforms for the 2024-25 season and announced that they will wear them for the first time on Sunday when they face the Dallas Mavericks.

According to a press release, the design of the Thunder's City Edition uniforms "completes a two-year story arc reflecting Oklahoma City's evolving landscape, growth, and momentum."

"The 24-25 City Edition Uniform is an expression of Oklahoma City's progression and unique cultural renaissance stemming from the optimism inherent in Oklahoma's people and heritage," Brian Byrnes, Thunder senior vice president of Business Operations, said in the release. "It pays tribute to the innovators that have shaped Oklahoma's culture and are pushing it forward."

The Oklahoma lettering on the front of the jersey is meant to be a statement of unity, as it will mark just the second Thunder uniform in team history to feature the state's name at the center. The belt line also includes an outline of Oklahoma state.

In addition to the uniform, the Thunder will have a City Edition court for the City Nights games. Each Sunday home game will be dubbed City Nights games going forward after the team's matchup against Dallas this week.

The Thunder, who started the season 7-0, continued their strong start with a 134-128 win over the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday night. Star point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander scored a career-high 45 points to spearhead the victory.

Oklahoma City will be back in action on Wednesday in a home matchup against the New Orleans Pelicans (3-8).

The Minnesota Timberwolves have unveiled their City Edition jerseys for the 2024-25 season.

The Timberwolves announced the new uniforms in a video posted on X that features star shooting guard Anthony Edwards as well as the rest of the team's rotation.

The jerseys feature white and blue colors in a wintry ice pattern, paying homage to Minnesota's lakes.

The City Edition uniforms will be worn 23 times by the Timberwolves this season, starting with a clash against the Phoenix Suns on Sunday.

The jerseys bear a striking resemblance to the team's City Edition uniforms that were used last season. The organization explained that "this year's uniform is the culmination of a two-year story focused on the integral role lakes and 'lake life' play in Minnesota" as part of the announcement.

The 2024-25 jerseys feature the Timberwolves' primary icon logo on the shorts, which is encased in black and white while the ice pattern is within. The waistband also includes an outline of the state of Minnesota.

"When it comes to the cold of winter, Minnesotans don't just survive, we thrive," Timberwolves chief marketing officer Mike Grahl said, per the announcement. "We're excited to complete Nike and NBA's two-year City Edition story arc with a celebration of lake life in Minnesota—ice cold style."

The Timberwolves are coming off an immensely successful 2023-24 campaign, making their first trip to the Western Conference Finals since 2004.

Minnesota has started the 2024-25 season with a 6-4 record while owning the sixth-best net rating in the association, via NBA.com.

As Edwards looks to lead the Timberwolves back to the playoffs, the team will suit up in the City Edition uniforms against Phoenix. Tip-off for Sunday's contest is at 3:30 p.m. ET.

Thunder's Chet Holmgren Out 8-10 Weeks with Pelvic Fracture Injury After Hard Fall

Nov 11, 2024

The Oklahoma City Thunder have announced center Chet Holmgren will miss eight to 10 weeks with a pelvic fracture after a hard fall attempting a block during Sunday's loss to the Golden State Warriors.

Everyone involved will certainly hope the young player avoids a longer-term issue after injuries have been a major storyline to this point in his career.

Holmgren was selected No. 2 overall in the 2022 NBA draft out of Gonzaga, but he was ruled out for the 2022-23 season after suffering a Lisfranc injury in his right foot during a Pro-Am event.

The 22-year-old has proved to be an impact player when on the court, averaging 18.2 points, 9.2 rebounds and 2.9 blocks entering Sunday's game against Golden State.

It has helped the Thunder emerge as one of the most exciting teams in the NBA with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Jalen Williams and a deep roster of versatile young players.

Unfortunately, the injury to Holmgren could hurt Oklahoma City's chances of competing with the best teams in the Western Conference.

Ousmane Dieng and Aaron Wiggins could be among those who see a bigger role if Holmgren misses an extended stretch.

Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards has made a point of taking more threes so far this season, something he will continue to do regardless of what anyone might say about it.

Speaking to reporters after Friday's 119-116 win over the Denver Nuggets, Edwards' message about his new style of play was "f--k 'em" when asked what he would say to anyone who thinks he is taking too many shots from behind the arc.

One of the few criticisms of Edwards' game through the first four seasons of his career was that he wasn't a great three-point shooter. He made 35.3 percent of his attempts behind the arc during that span.

Another aspect of that was Edwards' three-point volume was trending downward. He averaged 8.4 attempts per game in 2021-22, then 7.3 per game in 2022-23 and 6.7 per game last season.

The Timberwolves completely altered the way they play late in the offseason by trading Karl-Anthony Towns to the New York Knicks. They did get three-point specialist Donte DiVincenzo back in the deal, but the addition of Julius Randle—who is historically a low-volume three-point shooter—put more bodies inside the arc with Rudy Gobert stationed in the paint.

Rather than try to stay in the midrange, where he was having tremendous success, Edwards has decided to become a three-point savant. He's attempting 22.6 shots per game, with 13.4 of them coming from behind the arc.

The strategy is paying off handsomely for Edwards and the T-Wolves. He has a 43.3 percent success rate and is on a historic pace through five games.

Edwards' 13.4 three-point attempts per game leads the NBA, exactly one more on average than Charlotte Hornets point guard LaMelo Ball (12.4). His 43.3 percent success rate is the best in the league among all players averaging at least 10 attempts.

Given how much of a historic outlier these stats are, it will be interesting to see if Edwards can continue at this pace over a larger sample size.

For now, though, Edwards is doing all he can to keep the Timberwolves playing at a level that keeps them in the ranks of the top teams in the Western Conference.

Nuggets' Braun Regrets Taunting Rudy Gobert, Technical Foul After Loss to T-Wolves

Christian Braun shouldered the blame for the Denver Nuggets' 119-116 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves on Friday after his celebration of a poster dunk on Rudy Gobert led to a confrontation on the court that resulted in double technical fouls being assessed.

Speaking to reporters afterward, Braun explained he thought that moment halted the Nuggets' positive momentum and allowed Minnesota back in the game.

"I got to be more responsible," Braun said. "It's two points. Obviously, those are the plays you want to make and those are the momentum plays I want to make, but getting a tech throws the momentum their way, so I got to do a better job of controlling myself."

The incident occurred midway through the fourth quarter. Braun's dunk came during a 13-0 run for the Nuggets to give them a 112-102 lead with 4:17 left to play.

Minnesota closed the game on a 17-4 run to erase the 10-point deficit and steal a victory.

Even though Braun tried to take responsibility for halting the Nuggets' momentum, the bigger issue during the final four minutes were the struggles of Nikola Jokić.

The reigning NBA MVP committed two turnovers in the span of three offensive possessions for Denver that led to five points for the Timberwolves. He also missed his last two shot attempts in the final minute, including a three as time expired that would have tied the game.

No one is going to point the finger at Jokić in a game where he put up 26 points on 8-of-16 shooting, 13 rebounds and nine assists. He was far from the biggest problem overall for the Nuggets, but his miscues in crunch time stood out because the rest of the team is struggling to execute.

Jamal Murray still looks broken after scoring six points on 2-of-7 shooting in 22 minutes. He is shooting just 37.0 percent from the field in five games.

The Russell Westbrook experiment is going about as well as expected. He had nearly as many turnovers (four) as points (five) and went 1-of-8 from the field in 25 minutes. His plus-minus is now at minus-51 in 104 minutes this season.

Braun played arguably his best game of the season with 14 points and seven rebounds.

All that can be said about the Nuggets right now is they are a deeply flawed team with a superstar in the middle of everything. They are below-average by defensive rating and net rating.

Despite having Jokić to run the offense, they are 12th in offensive rating. All of this has resulted in the Nuggets losing three of their first five games, with their lone wins coming in two overtime games against the Toronto Raptors and Brooklyn Nets.

The Minnesota Timberwolves defeated the Denver Nuggets in a rematch of last season's Western Conference semifinals on Friday night.

Led by Anthony Edwards, the Timberwolves took down the Nuggets by the final score of 119-116 at the Target Center.

Edwards finished with 29 points, four rebounds and four assists in 38 minutes on the floor. He shot 11-23 and hit seven three-pointers, connecting on a go-ahead floater with roughly 25 seconds left in the fourth quarter.

The Timberwolves trailed by 10 points with less than four minutes remaining in the contest, but they were able to quickly erase the deficit and secure the victory.

There wasn't any love lost between the two Western Conference rivals, as Rudy Gobert and Christian Braun were both assessed technical fouls due to an altercation following a dunk by Braun.

Fans were amazed by Edwards' late-game heroics.

Despite the loss, Nikola Jokić still wrapped up an efficient performance. The three-time MVP finished with 26 points and 13 assists to go along with nine rebounds. He shot 8-16 from the field, connecting on two of his three long-range attempts.

Russell Westbrook struggled to find his shot, hitting just one of his eight attempts from the field. He recorded five points, six rebounds and five assists.

The two teams will face off again on Jan. 25
