Fulham Still The Best Team in the World After Another Late Show!

Jan 3, 2009

Barney Corkhill's Unofficial World Club Championship (UWCC) saw another defence today as record-breaking champions Fulham took on Sheffield Wednesday of the Championship at Hillsborough.

In the first title match of 2009, Fulham found themselves in the relatively unfamiliar position of favourites. After going nine games unbeaten, a run which has included matches against Liverpool and Chelsea, a loss against Sheffield Wednesday would be a shock to say the least.

Prior to the match, Wednesday had gone four games without a win, and were lying 13th in the table, a whole 23 places below today's opponents.

But, despite pushing Fulham all the way, there was to be no "cupset" at Hillsborough, as Fulham ran out 2-1 winners thanks to a second late goal in successive matches.

The deadlock was broken just 12 minutes in, when a through ball from Danny Murphy set Andy Johnson on his way, and he calmly slotted it under the 'keeper. From then on, it looked like the Premier League side would have the better of it.

Wednesday weren't giving up, however, and Jermaine Johnson was on particularly good form. It wasn't the Wednesday striker who got them their equaliser though, it was defender Tommy Spurr, who shocked everyone with a wonderful strike from 25-yards out.

The two teams matched each other for much of the remaining hour or so, until right at the end, Andy Johnson popped up to give Fulham a dramatic winner, and send them through to the FA Cup fourth round.

The match was the eighth time Fulham have defended their crown, a record which will grow come the next game. It was also Fulham's first away win as UWCC champions and, amazingly, the first time they had scored away from home as well!

The 74 voters in the poll couldn't separate the two sides as the votes came up 50-50 in regards to who would win the match. Congratulations to all those who got it right!

Fulham's run

US Soccer Men's National Team's 2009 New Year's Resolutions

Jan 1, 2009

As tradition dictates, we all will make 2009 New Year’s resolutions today. Some of us will want to quit smoking, lose weight, spend more time with our families, or even all three. I have been thinking about the US Men’s National Team’s upcoming year, and here are some resolutions I think they would make:

Landon Donovan

I resolve to play some fantastic soccer in 2009, just not for the Galaxy. I want to help the team qualify for the World Cup in 2010, and I want to increase my all-time leads in goals and assists. I also want to spend more time learning to speak German.

Pablo Mastroeni

I want to spend 2009 continuing to rob younger, more talented players (like Mo Edu) of playing time. I want to continue my unparalleled streak of games without a goal. Most of all though, I want to break more legs and get more cards in ‘09 than ever before.

Clint Dempsey

I resolve to continue to poach goals against our worst opponents and then disappear in big games. I also vow to keep sporting one of the worst hairstyles in US MNT team history. I think 2009 is the year I finally learn to play bridge too. That game is so hot right now.

Bob Bradley

In 2009, I want to spend more time with my son, Michael. So, I resolve to continue to play him 90 minutes of every MNT game, regardless of his hot temper and questionable first touch. I also want to finally read The Da Vinci Code. Everyone else has by now, for God’s sake.

So, that’s what I think those gentlemen would want to resolve to do in 2009. If you have any resolutions you think MNT members would make, let me hear about it in the comments. As for me, I vow to keep providing you with insights into American soccer throughout the year here on STO!

Manager of the Year 2008: Roy Hodgson

Dec 28, 2008

Exactly one year ago, Roy Hodgson took over as Fulham manager after Lawrie Sanchez's ill fated run. The team were in disarray and were conceding goals at an alarming rate and relegation looked a foregone conclusion. And just to rub salt in their wounds, Roy Hodgson found himself taking over on the verge of the crunch tie with Chelsea, a match that saw Fulham sink to even lower depths after a 2-1 defeat.

Move forward a year, and Fulham sit comfortably in mid-table. They are unbeaten in seven games, only Manchester United have conceded fewer goals and today they dealt a massive blow to Chelsea's title ambitions by claiming a 2-2 draw at Craven Cottage, a real fortress under Hodgson.

In a remarkable 32 year career as a manager, Hodgson has managed a amazing 16 teams. In Scandinavia and Switzerland he is regarded as one of the greatest ever managers to ply their trade over there. In Italy, after his latest stint with Inter he was chased by a number of Serie A clubs, he has managed Inter Milan on no less than three occasions and is so widely regarded by Internazionale that they have approached him on a number of occasions to become their Director of Football.

On the International scene, he was courted by both Finland and Ireland and was considering a contract in the UAE before Fulham approached him.

But why choose Fulham?

Throughout his entire career, Hodgson has known success. He guided Halmstads to the Swedish title in his first year as a manager, and won the Swedish league on seven occasions with Halmstad and Malmo. He brought unheralded success to the Swiss national team, finished second in Serie A with Inter, won the Danish League with Copenhagen, and was sacked a little over a year into his job at Blackburn.

It is this sacking that has driven one of the best coaches in Europe to take over at Craven Cottage, he wants to prove to his home country that his reputation outside England is a deserved one.

Initially when he took over, Fulham were in freefall. Lawrie Sanchez's tactics had confused the players, his transfer dealings were atrocious and Fulham looked like they had consigned themselves to life in the Championship.

Within days of arriving at Craven Cottage, Hodgson set about saving the sinking ship. One of the major complaints against Lawrie Sanchez was that he signed small players. During his time at Fulham, he never signed a player taller than 5'9". No surprise then that Fulham had conceded more goals from headers and crosses than any other team in the Premiership.

Hodgson took out Mohammad Al-Fayed's chequebook immediately and signed five players. The giant Brede Hangeland was brought in for a modest fee of £2.5m from Copenhagen in a bid to add height and strength to the defence. And it has worked most spectacularly for Hodgson—Hangeland is now being lauded as one of the best centre halves in the league, and is now being tracked by a host of top European sides.

Other players to come in included Erik Nevland and Jari Litmanen, both veterans were brought in on short term deals to help their ex-manager.

Jimmy Bullard returned from injury and was rejuvenated as if he was a new player and with the team beginning to gel, they began to claw their way back into the league.

Heading into the last month of the league, Fulham still looked dead and buried. But a remarkable run of four wins from their last five games, including their first away win in 18 months secured top flight football on the final day of the season.

During the summer, Hodgson has further strengthened the team. He saw something in the gangling John Pantsil when West Ham did not and since his move to Craven Cottage, the Ghanaian has become one of the best attacking full backs in the league. To date he has put in more crosses than any other player in the league.

Signing Pantsil has also brought out the best in Simon Davies. The solid pro and ever reliable player had begun to lose some of his renowned stamina in recent times, but with Pantsil now taking up most of the running on the right, Davies has been allowed to move slightly inside, a move that not only strengthen's midfield but which allows Fulham to get the best from the Welsh players work rate and range of passing.

This has also allowed Danny Murphy to thrive as an attacking midfielder, the ex-Spurs and Liverpool player's career looked over until Hodgson plucked him from reserve football at White Hart Lane and he has repaid his manager's faith with a number of important goals, including the one that secured Fulham's Premiership status.

As it stands, only Paul Konchesky has kept his place in the back four as Hodgson has completely re-built his defensive line, but having a solid defence is not Fulham's only secret.

They have a midfield that play good attractive football. They try to do the right things all the time, and with players like Bullard, Davies, Murphy, Eddie Johnson and the tireless Clint Dempsey in the team, it comes as no surprise that Fulham now enjoy a larger percentage of possession in their matches.

Under Sanchez, they averaged a possession percentage of 44 percent. With Hodgson in charge it has risen to an excellent 52 percent.

Fulham have proved a much harder prospect this season, and at the half way stage they find themselves in ninth position.

They are unbeaten in their last nine games, and have only lost once in 12. West Ham and Chelsea are the only teams who have scored more than once against them and they look a good outside bet for the FA Cup.

Hodgson is not happy though. Brian McBride going back to America has left a huge gulf up front, Andy Johnson has not been as prolific as one would have hoped and Bobby Zamora does not look like a Premiership player, so Hodgson will be on the look out for a striker in January.

Midfielder Kagiso Dikgacoi from South Africa is close to agreeing terms and Kevin Doyle from Reading has been linked recently as Fulham look to end their goalscoring problems.

All in all, a hugely successful year for a team who looked doomed in January. Now they are on the outskirts of Europe, have some of the leagues most sought after players in Bullard and Hangeland and for the first time in a long time a real manager.

Roy Hodgson, is my vote for the best manager in the EPL 2008.

Chelsea-Fulham: Chelsea Miss Chance to Become Champions

Dec 28, 2008

Barney Corkhill's Unofficial World Club Championship (UWCC) saw another defence today, as the ultimate underdog champions Fulham took on second place Chelsea at Craven Cottage.

Prior to the match, Fulham had gone an unlikely eight games without defeat, while Chelsea had only won 13 of the last 24 points on offer, a poor run by their usual high standards.

Still, whatever the formbook suggested, Fulham were huge underdogs going into this match, especially considering Chelsea's fantastic recent away form.

As well as being a West London derby, this match also had an element of UWCC rivalry involved. If Fulham retained the title, they would set a new record for amount of successful defences of the title, breaking Chelsea's old record.

And, thanks to a late goal, that record was broken, and Fulham kept hold of the UWCC title.

The first goal came from Clint Dempsey shortly after Didier Drogba had wasted a good chance. Dempsey had time to control the ball within the Chelsea six-yard box, and flick it over Petr Cech to give Fulham the lead.

The equaliser came in the second half after a mix up between Mark Schwarzer and Aaron Hughes left Frank Lampard with an easy tap-in, and the England man doubled his tally with a stunning free-kick a few minutes later.

Chelsea, who had been the better team throughout the match, looked like holding on, but Drogba lost his man from a late corner, leaving Clint Dempsey to nod in his second of the match, and give Fulham a historic point.

The result means that Chelsea fall even further behind Liverpool in the title race, after the league leaders beat Newcastle 5-1.

Chelsea missed the chance to become the first ever two-time UWCC champions, while Fulham are now recognised as the longest reigning champions in UWCC history. Despite having drawn six of their seven games as defending champions, Fulham have also now equaled Tottenham's tally of points won as champions.

Amazingly, 64.3 percent of voters on the poll predicted that Chelsea wouldn't beat Fulham, so well done to all of you who chose that!

Fulham's run

Fulham 2-1 Tottenham (Fulham become new champions)

Liverpool 0-0 Fulham

Aston Villa 0-0 Fulham

Fulham 1-1 Manchester City

Stoke 0-0 Fulham

Fulham 3-0 Middlesbrough

Fulham 2-2 Chelsea

(Click here to see the complete history of Barney Corkhill's Unofficial World Club Championship.)

Congratulations to Fulham for ending 2008 with the UWCC title, and they start 2009 in the same way. Their first title defence of the new year, and record breaking eighth overall, comes on January 3, as they take on Sheffield Wednesday in the first ever FA Cup UWCC tie. Can Sheffield Wednesday become the best team in the world?!

Total 90: American Football News For Dec. 28

Dec 28, 2008

After a two-week break during the Christmas season, Total 90 is back and just as mediocre as before!

We'll begin with some exciting news regarding the US National Team. They will be opening the final round of World Cup Qualifying on February 11th. Their opponents? Their hated rivals, Mexico. The location? Beautiful, tropical Columbus, Ohio.

The location figures to be a huge advantage for the United States. The last time those two teams met in Columbus, the US walked away with a 2-0 win, clinching qualification for Germany 2006. Yours truly was present, and it remains to this day the most exciting sporting event I've ever attended.

First, Columbus is far enough north that the Mexicans will not enjoy the same large contingent of fans that they do when the teams meet below the Mason-Dixon line. When the teams met at Reliant Stadium in Houston, it was essentially a home game for Mexico. The US wants a definite home-field advantage in the match and should get it.

The US Soccer Federation is also taking tighter control over ticketing. They will no doubt allocate larger blocks of tickets to US fans, and likely stick the Mexican fans in some far removed corner of the stadium where it will be more difficult for their cheers to be heard. Again, this could have a big effect on the environment at kickoff.

Lastly, the weather should be a big concern for Mexico. Last time the two teams played in February in Columbus, back in 2001, temperatures during the game were hovering between 25 and 30 degrees. US players will be used to playing in colder temperatures, as the MLS season stretches late into fall. The Mexican team may have trouble adjusting as they did back in 2001.

There is one major ethical concern here for me. The match falls on a Wednesday, and I would dearly love to attend. But, attending would mean skipping at least a half day teaching, plus two college classes after the school day. Do I head to Columbus, or do I go to class and watch the game at a bar?

More good news out of Columbus, this time on the MLS front. The talented defender Chad Marshall, linked to a possible move abroad in January, has re-signed with the Columbus Crew. Last season, Marshall helped the Crew defense become one of the stingiest in the league as it conceded only 36 goals.

Is this a good move for Marshall? Only time will tell. He spent a brief period of time with German side Mainz 05 earlier in December but has decided to return to MLS. For a player hoping to gain a consistent spot in Bob Bradley's National Team sides, this may not have been the best move. But, Marshall is only 24 years old and barring a setback, you have to figure that his window for a move abroad is still open.

In an effort to shore up a defense that hemmorhaged goals last season, the LA Galaxy have inked Jamaican international goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts. Ricketts has spent time in both the Jamaican leagues and League Two in England, with Bradford City.

Call it a wild guess, but a 31 year-old goalkeeper who has never played at an elite level will probably not solve LA's defensive problems. Look for manager Bruce Arena to try and make several more moves before the start of the next MLS season.

In news abroad, American international Clint Dempsey has helped lead Fulham into 9th position in the Premier League going into the new year. He scored both goals for Fulham as they held Chelsea to a 2-2 draw.

This is a very encouraging sign from Dempsey, who has been trying to regularly break into the starting lineup ever since his arrival at Craven Cottage. If he keeps turning in such brilliant performances, only a fool would be able to keep him on the bench.

Total 90 is off to Orlando for the Capital One Bowl and will be back with more news and analysis in 2009. Enjoy your New Year's celebrations (responsibly, of course)!

Clint Dempsey Double Pegs Chelsea Back

Dec 28, 2008

Clint Dempsey headed in a late equaliser for Fulham to dent Chelsea’s title hopes heading into 2009.

Fulham had taken the lead early in the first half from a free kick, Dempsey knocking in the first of his two goals from close range.

Lampard equalised just after half time when Schwarzer dropped the ball in the box, leaving the England international with the easiest of goals.

Chelsea were a different side compared to the one seen in the first half, and a second goal seemed to be a question if when, not if.

Lampard provided it with a swerving free kick that flew into the corner past Schwarzer.

But more drama was to follow. Fulham won a late corner and Dempsey rose to head home an unlikely equaliser.

After a busy period of games, Luiz Felipe Scolari opted to shuffle his pack, drafting in Deco and Florent Malouda, and leaving Nicolas Anelka on the bench.

The Blues knew that the pressure was on after Liverpool’s impressive 5-1 demolition of Newcastle, and they started well.

Lampard and Drogba both tested Schwarzer with shots, but some sloppy marking caused Chelsea to go behind after 11 minutes.

Dempsey was allowed to chest the ball from a free kick and poke the ball past Cech and into the net.

Drogba had his second attempt of the math on 19 minutes, skimming a shot across the face of goal after being fed by Mikel.

Chelsea were forced into a change just after the half hour mark with Malouda unable to continue due to a hamstring problem.

Anelka took his place and made an immediate impact, unleashing a shot that was kept out by Schwarzer’s leg.

Ricardo Carvalho was forced into action for the first time in two months as Chelsea suffered another injury, this time to Brazilian defender Alex.

This didn’t interrupt Chelsea’s rhythm however, and Lampard had two more efforts on the Fulham goal before the half was out.

Within minutes of the restart, Lampard had his goal. Aaaron Hughes and Schwarzer got into an almighty mess and the ball broke loose to Lampard, who had the simple task of tapping the ball in.

The away side began to crank up the pressure in search of a winner, but a combination of Schwarzer and some wayward finishing kept the scores level.

Scolari made the slightly questionable decision to take off Joe Cole - one of Chelsea’s better performers - on 72 minutes, but such thoughts were quickly forgotten as Lampard scored his second goal of the afternoon to give Chelsea a deserved lead.

The England midfielder lined up a free kick 25 yards out and crashed in a drive that swerved away from the despairing reach of Schwarzer.

Fulham seemed unable to muster a response, and Chelsea looked set to play out time and secure a vital victory.

But some more sloppy marking put paid to that idea. Simon Davies’ corner was met by Dempsey, whose header went in with Petr Cech a mere spectator.

Craven Cottage went wild, and Luiz Felipe Scolari was left to count the cost of a second successive draw away from home, a result that leaves his side three points behind Liverpool.

Fulham Battle to Retain Unofficial World Club Championship Title

Dec 26, 2008

Barney Corkhill's Unofficial World Club Championship (UWCC) saw another defence today, as champions Fulham took on the team they won the title off—Tottenham Hotspur.

Roy Hodgson had surprised everyone by leading Fulham to seven games unbeaten, but their away form was still under scrutiny. They hadn't scored an away goal since Oct. 26, when Clint Dempsey scored a late equaliser against Portsmouth.

Tottenham were without a win in four going into this match, a run which included a loss against Newcastle, but also a hard-fought draw against Manchester United. In Fulham, they came up against the team who had effectively ended their dream start under Harry Redknapp.

And, once again, they were unable to get the three points against a disciplined Fulham side.

It was a story of both 'keepers, as Heurelho Gomes and Mark Schwarzer made some impressive, and important, saves at either end.

Gomes saved well from a spectacular effort from Clint Dempsey and denied Andy Johnson later in the game. Schwarzer produced an unorthodox, yet effective, save from a David Bentley long ranger, and a brilliant one to deny Aaron Lennon from close range in the best chance of the game.

Tottenham have now failed to score in their last three games, while Fulham have gone four games without scoring away from home.

The result is the fifth draw in the reign of Fulham, and they have only won twice, including the earlier result against Tottenham in which they claimed the title. It was also Tottenham's second shot at the title, and the first in which they have been unsuccessful.

Of the 52 people who voted in the poll, 76.9 percent of them predicted that Tottenham wouldn't be able to beat Fulham and win the UWCC title, so well done to them! It seems Fulham have gained a rather large gathering!

Fulham Comfortably Retain the Unofficial World Club Championships!

Dec 21, 2008

Barney Corkhill's Unofficial World Club Championship (UWCC) saw another defence yesterday, as champions Fulham took on Gareth Southgate's Middlesbrough at Craven Cottage.

Fulham, who were defending their status as the greatest club in the world for the fifth time, had been on an impressive run of six games without defeat prior to this match, whereas Middlesbrough were without a win in five.

Far from being considered one of the easier ties now, Fulham had established themselves as contenders for a top-half finish with this recent run, and there was even some talk of Europe at the Cottage, albeit perhaps optimistically.

True to the form book, it was Fulham who came out on top, recording their first win as defending UWCC champions, after their first four matches ended in draws.

It was their talismanic midfielder Jimmy Bullard who gave them the lead just before half-time, poking in Bobby Zamora's spilt shot from close range. Bullard has been linked with a move away from the club in recent weeks, but Fulham's recent form will certainly be making him think twice.

It was Bullard's midfield partner, Danny Murphy, who converted the second from the penalty spot after Tony McMahon was adjudged to have handled in the area. It was the third penalty in UWCC history, all of which, incidentally, have been scored by English midfielders (Lampard and Gerrard scored the other two).

With Fulham cruising to a deserved victory, Clint Dempsey rounded off the scoring with a tidy finish on the hour mark.

It isn't the first time Middlesbrough have let the UWCC title escape them, after losing 5-0 to Chelsea way back in October.

94.1 percent of voters on the poll said that Middlesbrough wouldn't be able to beat Fulham, so well done to all of you!

Soccer AM Clips: The Geordie Dancer vs Mackem Mover

Dec 13, 2008

Kicking off the show was former Northern Ireland, Fulham and Wycombe manager Lawrie Sanchez, who told Helen and Max about how he has been spending the last year out of the game going travelling in his camper van and planning his return back into football.

Next up were institutions of British morning telly, Anne Diamond and Nick Owen, with Anne admitting that they have "been at it for a very long time" before claiming that "sex helped" in keeping their on-screen TV relationship strong. The pair were then asked to turn on the Christmas lights in the studio.

An already populated sofa was then further occupied by comedian Sean Lock, who came on the show to plug his new Crimbo DVD of his stand-up routine. Lastly, The Fratellis made the show to talk about their latest movements in the world of rock, talking about touring and having their own record studio.

The highlight of the show though was the long-awaited, much-hyped dance-off between the Geordie Dancer and the Mackem Mover.

For those unaware, both the Geordie Dancer and Mackem Mover, Newcastle and Sunderland fans respectively, are a pair of average joes who have propelled to national fame after being independently spotted on TV showing off their unique dance moves. Both are plump, middle-aged men who allow people to laugh with them (and also at them), and the both exude an enthusiasm which is infectious.

Prior to the show, the pair were released on the Newcastle public to perfect their routines in front of live crowds in the city centre. The Geordie Dancer’s effort can be seen here, while the Mackem Mover showed off his moves here.

So onto the dance-off. It began with a boxing style weigh-in, before the Soccer AM team made an over-elaborate intro leading into the main event.

Watch what happened here.

The usual features returned including Armed Forces, Iron Soldier, Man In The Caff, Skill Skool, Crossbar Challenge, Tubes and Soccerette.

Fulham STILL the Best Team in the World!

Dec 13, 2008

Barney Corkhill's Unofficial World Club Championship (UWCC) saw another defence today, as champions Fulham took on the dogged Stoke City.

After three successive draws, Fulham went into this match one point ahead of Stoke, and six matches unbeaten in all competitions.

Stoke, on the other hand, were without a win in four. With their unique style, however, they can never be counted out, as they have shown time and time again.

As it was, both teams came out with a point apiece in a dull and largely uneventful game.

An early injury to Mamady Sidibe gave Fulham hope of a first away win this season, but nothing materialised, despite having a few good penalty claims turned down.

Stoke had chances too, however, the best of which coming from substitute Richard Cresswell.

The result is the fourth draw in a row in UWCC history, and Fulham, amazingly, have now been defending champions for four games, and are still yet to win. As with Manchester City last week, this was Stoke's second crack at the title, the first coming  in a 2-0 defeat to Chelsea.

44.4 percent of voters on the poll said that Stoke wouldn't be able to beat Fulham, so well done to those!
