Chelsea advanced to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 2-0 win over Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

Callum Hudson-Odoi opened the scoring after just six minutes, and Ross Barkley added to the lead before half-time. Forest rarely threatened the Blues, who cruised to the final whistle.

Chelsea made a dream start to Sunday's match, opening the scoring after just a few minutes. The ball was worked to Hudson-Odoi, who cut inside on to his left foot before firing the ball into the bottom corner.

He's been an effective option at home for the Blues:

The early lead was exactly what the favourites needed and allowed them to settle into the game. Forest could do little to gain a foothold in the midfield battle, although Alex Mighten threatened just about every time he got on the ball.

Emerson and Barkley both caused some panic in the Forest box with crosses that went begging, and Michy Batshuayi got in the way of a Pedro shot that looked destined for the net.

Forest nearly found a shock breakthrough midway through the first half, when Mighten earned the team a penalty after he was pulled back by Fikayo Tomori. The video assistant referee overruled the decision, however, spotting a marginal offside in the buildup.

ESPN FC's Dale Johnson didn't believe Tomori committed a foul to begin with:

The Blues pushed for a second goal and found it shortly after the half-hour mark, with Barkley firing home a rebound after Hudson-Odoi's initial effort was saved.

The last chance of the half fell to Batshuayi, who couldn't keep his header on target after lovely work from Reece James.

Chelsea eased their way into the second half, dropping the intensity even further. It led to a cagey start and Forest's first real chance of the match, with Willy Caballero making a routine save from Joao Carvalho.

Jordan Smith also got to show his ability in the Forest goal, making an excellent save to keep out Barkley's header. Mateo Kovacic tried to get a shot away from a promising position, but miscued his attempt and missed the target.

The VAR again played a major role in the second half, ruling out a Ryan Yates goal for offside. Per Liam Twomey of the Athletic, it was another close call:

Batshuayi did not have a good outing on Sunday and perhaps should have scored with 20 minutes on the clock, diverting a cross over the bar.

The final 20 minutes played out without major incidents, with Mighten the only visiting player who still put up a fight.

FA Cup holders Manchester City started the defence of their title by beating League Two side Port Vale 4-1 at the Etihad Stadium in the third round on Saturday.

City coasted through to Round 4, but Manchester United will need a replay after drawing 0-0 with Wolverhampton Wanderers. Leicester City and Bournemouth also made it through thanks to comfortable wins over Wigan Athletic and Luton Town, respectively.

Aston Villa and Brighton & Hove Albion were the Premier League sides sent packing after both were beaten by opposition from the Championship, with Villa falling to Fulham and the Seagulls shocked on home soil by Sheffield Wednesday.

Earlier, Newcastle United were held by League One side Rochdale. The Magpies took the lead at Spotland through Miguel Almiron but were taken to a replay when 40-year-old Aaron Wilbraham equalised late on.

While Newcastle were held, Burnley did the Premier League proud by putting four past League One opposition, in the form of Peterborough United. Jay Rodriguez bagged a brace for the Clarets, who snapped a three-game losing run.

Norwich City are fighting against relegation in England's top flight but enjoyed serene progress in the cup. Onel Hernandez helped the Canaries win away to Preston North End.

By contrast, last season's finalists Watford blew a 3-0 lead at Vicarage Road to be taken to a replay by League One outfit Tranmere Rovers.

Oleksandr Zinchenko sent City into a 20th-minute lead via a deflected shot, but Vale weren't deterred. Instead, the team from the bottom division turned to goalscoring talisman Tom Pope to net a surprise equaliser:

Pope has made a habit of finding the net in this competition:

City needed to stay patient and remained content to work the ball through Vale's disciplined, defensive shape. David Silva, Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden bossed possession and created a host of chances.

Yet it took until three minutes before the break for the Citizens to restore their advantage when Aguero finished from inside the area. VAR upheld the goal to continue the Argentinian's prolific run at this stage:

There was a special moment for Taylor Harwood-Bellis, when the 17-year-old centre-back got the final touch to score City's third. Another academy graduate, Foden, completed the scoring after capping a slick move:

There was little to talk about during United's bore draw away to Wolves. Sergio Romero saved superbly to deny Matt Doherty, while substitutes Marcus Rashford and Raul Jimenez both hit the frame of the goal in an otherwise drab game.

Villa were in trouble nine minutes into the second half at Craven Cottage when mercurial winger Anthony Knockaert scored for the hosts. Anwar El Ghazi levelled the tie in the 63rd minute, but Harry Arter provided the telling moment of quality to win it for the Cottagers:

Only one goal was needed to settle things in favour of the Owls at the Amex Stadium. It came in the 65th minute when full-back Adam Reach's shot took a decisive deflection:

Brighton were unable to muster a response, despite a strong lineup featuring schemer Pascal Gross and striker Neal Maupay.

Almiron had waited a while for his first Newcastle goal, but now the Paraguay international looks perfectly settled in England. He took his 17th-minute opener superbly, controlling the ball with a smart touch before slamming the finish in via his left foot.

Rochdale weren't doing enough to disrupt the visitors physically, preferring instead to rely on the neat, passing football they've played all season. Wilbraham's arrival off the bench at the start of the second half signalled a change in tact.

It took a while, but the veteran target man eventually made the difference 11 minutes from time:

Rodriguez brought his own pace, movement and aerial power to bear against Peterborough. He tapped home a rebound from Chris Wood's header on eight minutes, before Erik Pieters doubled Burnley's advantage with a splendid strike.

Jeff Hendrick made it 3-0, but Ivan Toney brought Posh back into the game. It was left to Rodriguez to settle the match as a contest with a slick finish seven minutes after the restart.

Norwich refreshed their ranks for the trip to Preston but still fielded plenty of quality in midfield. Todd Cantwell, Moritz Leitner and Marco Stiepermann helped the Canaries boss possession, while Hernandez and Adam Idah offered cutting edge up top.

Idah scored twice, while Hernandez also found the net during a dominant first-half display. Idah completed his hat-trick by tucking away a penalty a minute after the hour mark.

Fellow Premier League strugglers Watford initially caught the eye when Nathaniel Chalobah teed up Tom Dele-Bashiru to score a brilliant goal after 12 minutes. Chalobah went from provider to goalscorer two minutes later, and Pereyra found the top corner 11 minutes before the break.

The Hornets appeared to be in cruise control, but two goals in 13 second-half minutes from Connor Jennings and Manny Monthe gave Tranmere hope. Paul Mullin completed the comeback from the penalty spot, before Pereyra was sent off after hacking down Kieron Morris.

Another of the more dramatic ties on the day saw Tom Eaves net a hat-trick to bring 2014 finalists Hull City back from two goals down away to Rotherham United:

Cardiff City also rallied from 2-0 down after Jack Bridge and Harry McKirdy put Carlisle United in a commanding position. The Bluebirds fought back when Callum Paterson and Gavin Whyte found the net against the team from the bottom tier of English football.

Elsewhere, Birmingham City survived losing Ivan Sunjic to a red card to beat Blackburn Rovers in an all-Championship clash when Jeremie Bela scored in the final minute.

Bournemouth put dire form in the league to one side to destroy Luton. Philip Billing opened the scoring but conceded a penalty, which Hatters defender Alan Sheehan rattled off the crossbar shortly before the break.

Callum Wilson, Billing and Dominic Solanke padded the score within the final 25 minutes.

Leicester were boosted after Wigan's Tom Pearce put the ball into his own net. The Foxes were assured of a place in the next round when Harvey Barnes finished smartly five minutes before half-time.

Manchester United will host a 2020 FA Cup replay after drawing with Wolverhampton Wanderers 0-0 at Molineux in the third round on Saturday.

The stalemate means the Red Devils will get another chance for revenge against the team that knocked them out of this competition in the quarter-final last season. Meanwhile, Wolves still have hope of progressing and eventually making up for blowing a 2-0 lead to lose to Watford in 2019's semi-final.

Wolves did most of the running from the off and were only denied an early goal by a superb save from Sergio Romero. David De Gea's deputy did well to get a hand to Matt Doherty's close-range effort:

There was more threat from the hosts thanks to the pace and power of Adama Traore. He was ably supported by the direct running of 21-year-old striker Benny Ashley-Seal.

United were strangely subdued in contrast, despite having the ingenuity of Juan Mata and Andreas Pereira in midfield. Even so, the visitors thought they had a penalty when left-back Brandon Williams appeared to be tripped by Leander Dendoncker.

Replays were inconclusive, and VAR wasn't called on for another look. There was no more action in a fairly turgid first half.

Wolves boss Nuno Espirito Santo was forced into a change, bringing gifted No. 9 Raul Jimenez off the bench for the injured Ashley-Seal. He and Traore were soon running United ragged, with the pair combining to tee up Pedro Neto, who forced Romero into a fine save with his feet.

Overall, though, the match was still lacking quality:

United's problems in the final third were typified by Mason Greenwood blazing well over.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer responded immediately by calling Marcus Rashford and Fred off the bench. Rashford's first involvement was to clip a shot off the bar after a smart one-two between Fred and Greenwood.

Wolves needed more experience at the back, and Nuno brought on left wing-back Jonny Otto. Fellow defender Doherty thought he'd headed Wolves in front, but the ball took a touch off the right-back's arm on the way in, nullifying the goal.

Jimenez cracked a shot off the outside of the post from a tight angle, but both sides ultimately lacked enough inspiration to force a breakthrough. The grind of an extra fixture is just reward for two teams better than the dull fare they served up here.

Manchester City beat League Two side Port Vale 4-1 on Saturday at the Etihad Stadium to progress to the fourth round of the FA Cup.

The holders opened the scoring when Oleksandr Zinchenko's shot from range hit the outstretched boot of Leon Legge on its way past goalkeeper Scott Brown.

The visitors shocked Manchester City by pulling one back through Tom Pope after 35 minutes. David Amoo raced down the right and crossed for the striker to head past Claudio Bravo.

Sergio Aguero restored Manchester City's lead three minutes before half-time, tapping home Phil Foden's low cross at the far post for his 15th goal of the season.

The hosts added a third on 58 minutes through 17-year-old Taylor Harwood-Bellis, while Foden completed the scoring to complete a comfortable win for Pep Guardiola's side.

Guardiola rotated his team as expected for Saturday's clash against lower league opposition, making seven changes and naming teenagers Harwood-Bellis and Foden in his starting XI alongside experienced stars such as Aguero and David Silva.

Tyrone Marshall at the Manchester Evening News shared the two teams:

The visitors attacked the holders straight from kick-off. Scott Burgess went close with a shot that was deflected wide after a cutback from Pope.

Foden had a shot blocked by Nathan Smith and then headed straight at goalkeeper Brown at the other end before Zinchenko broke the deadlock on 20 minutes. The Ukrainian drove forwards and let fly with a rasping effort from distance that hit Legge on its way into the back of the net:

Manchester City should have doubled their lead five minutes later. Silva somehow managed to put a shot on to the crossbar from three yards out with the goal gaping, while Aguero could not convert the follow-up (UK video only):

Port Vale threatened to upset Guardiola's men with a leveller 10 minutes before half-time. Amoo produced a fine delivery from out wide on the right for Pope to beat Harwood-Bellis to the ball and head home:

The goal seemed to rouse City, and they did not take long to restore their advantage. The ball was played out to Foden on the right to cross for Aguero to tap in at the far post:

Manchester City continued their dominance after the break and extended their lead just before the hour mark. John Stones pounced on a loose ball in the box and tucked home from close range, the ball just taking a touch off Harwood-Bellis on the goal line.

The goal was initially ruled out for disallowed but given after a lengthy VAR check:

Foden capped off another influential display with his third of the season on 72 minutes. The midfielder converted from Angelino's first-time pass after good work from Gundogan:

The result sees Manchester City begin the defence of their trophy with a comfortable win over Port Vale, who fought hard against the champions but were ultimately outclassed by superior opposition.

Manchester City play Manchester United at Old Trafford in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final clash on Tuesday. Port Vale's next fixture is also on Tuesday against Salford City in the third round of the EFL Trophy.

Chelsea begin their FA Cup campaign at Stamford Bridge on Sunday, with second-tier Nottingham Forest the visitors seeking to secure an upset in Round 3.

The Blues have been going well in the Premier League under Frank Lampard, where they sit in fourth place. The new manager would love to secure silverware in his first term in charge, though—it's a competition Lampard excelled in as a player, winning the title on four occasions.

As for Forest, they are in fourth in the Championship having put together an overdue promotion push under manager Sabri Lamouchi. It will be fascinating to see how strong a side they field with that in mind.

Here are the latest odds and key viewing details for the fixture, as well as a preview of what's to come from the Bridge on Sunday.

At the end of a busy festive period, the chances are that Chelsea and Forest will make changes for this fixture.

The Blues were held in their previous outing, drawing 1-1 in the Premier League against Brighton & Hove Albion. They failed to take their chances in a dominant first-half showing and eventually paid the price late in the game.

Per Nizaar Kinsella of Goal, there were some signs of tiredness creeping in to Chelsea's play in the final stages of the match:

Lampard's week got even more frustrating when he came down with a sickness bug soon after that draw. Assistant manager Jody Morris took the press conference on Friday ahead of the Forest clash:

The match is set to be a chance for some players to make a case for more minutes, with the Chelsea website suggesting the likes of Willy Caballero, Andreas Christensen, Ross Barkley and Michy Batshuayi may all feature.

The latter of that quartet has been linked with a possible move to Aston Villa in recent weeks. According to Rob Dorsett of Sky Sports, Batshuayi wants to stay, despite spending the majority of the campaign as Tammy Abraham's backup:

As for Forest, they come into the game in great spirits, winning their last three matches in succession.

After years of inconsistency, they appear to have discovered an identity under Lamouchi, and they will feel confident of going to Stamford Bridge and causing problems for the Blues. Given their promotion ambitions, the coach has a big call to make on which of his key men feature.

Paul Taylor of The Athletic reflected on a thrilling 3-2 win for Forest in their previous fixture:

Chelsea have quality in reserve in their squad, and whatever team Lampard fields will be too strong for Forest. Players like Christensen and Barkley, who many expected to have stellar campaigns, will be hoping a new year means a new start for them.

Forest will go into the game without pressure and with a packed away end supporting them. Although they are capable of making this a nervy afternoon for the Blues, they'll leave London on the end of a narrow loss.

Prediction: Chelsea 2-1 Nottingham Forest

Liverpool will be out to add another chapter to their remarkable 2019-20 season on Sunday when their FA Cup journey begins at home to local rivals Everton.

The Reds have excelled in the Premier League, putting together a 13-point lead at the top of the standings. With that prize effectively secured at this early point in the campaign, it will be intriguing to see how much stock manager Jurgen Klopp places in the FA Cup.

Everton will surely view the competition as a priority as they seek to end a 25-year stretch without silverware. They have showed improved form under manager Carlo Ancelotti, but they will be big underdogs at Anfield, where they have a terrible record.

Here are the latest odds and key viewing details for the standout tie of the FA Cup third-round weekend.

There is no stopping Liverpool in the Premier League at the moment, and they made it an incredible 19 wins from 20 games on Thursday with victory over Sheffield United.

Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane were on the scoresheet either side of half time in a 2-0 win as they extended their lead over the chasing pack:

For now, the attentions of the team will shift to the FA Cup and local pride. With a full week to recover until their next game after Sunday's derby, Klopp may field a weaker team. Per James Pearce of The Athletic, he's hinted there will be changes:

Liverpool will be confident nevertheless. The German made a number of tweaks to the team when the Toffees visited in December in the Premier League, and the Reds were still able to emerge as 5-2 winners.

Most Liverpool supporters will want to see Divock Origi in the XI on Sunday, as he has an excellent record in this fixture. The Belgium forward grabbed two goals in the most recent win and a memorable 96th-minute winner in last season's 1-0 triumph.

Per the Match of the Day Twitter account, the striker has excelled against Everton at Anfield:

The Anfield crowd will also hope to get a first look at new signing Takumi Minamino, with the Japan international in line to make his debut following a transfer from Red Bull Salzburg.

Everton haven't won at the home of their rivals since 1999 and have a number of injury issues to contend with ahead of the clash.

Greg O'Keeffe of The Athletic commented on what was a leggy display from the Toffees in Wednesday's 2-1 loss to Manchester City:

In Ancelotti, they have a coach who has beaten the Reds this season, as he steered Napoli to a win and a draw in the two UEFA Champions League clashes between the clubs.

Even so, Liverpool are a force to be reckoned with at the moment, and even with a number of crucial players likely to be rested for this encounter, they will have enough to get over the line against their Merseyside rivals.

Prediction: Liverpool 2-1 Everton

Wolverhampton Wanderers welcome 12-time winners Manchester United to Molineux on Saturday in the third round of the FA Cup.

Nuno Espirito Santo's men made it all the way to the semi-finals last season, knocking the Red Devils out of the competition along the way with a 2-1 win in the quarter-finals.

Both teams head into the match on the back of disappointing Premier League results. Wolves were beaten 2-1 by struggling Watford on New Year's Day, while Manchester United went down 2-0 at Arsenal.

Match Preview

Wolves are enjoying another strong season and head into the match in seventh place in the Premier League and safely into the knockout stages of the UEFA Europa League.

Santo's men enjoyed a good cup run last season and will be confident of ousting Manchester United from the competition for a second season in a row as they possess a good home record against the Red Devils:

Saturday's hosts have also lost just one of their last 10 games at Molineux in all competitions and came from 2-0 down to beat Premier League champions Manchester City 3-2 in their last home fixture:

Striker Raul Jimenez was on target in last season's FA Cup win over Manchester United and is likely to trouble a leaky Manchester United defence again.

Solskjaer's side have kept only one clean sheet away from home in the Premier League in 2019-20, while Jimenez has nine goals and eight assists in his last 17 games for Wolves.

Winger Adama Traore is also a man in form and shone against Watford despite ending up on the losing side:

Manchester United are likely to rotate their side for this clash but are short in midfield due to injuries to Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba:

Fred and Nemanja Matic should continue in midfield, while 19-year-old Brandon Williams could replace Luke Shaw at left-back after the defender put in a poor showing against Arsenal.

One of the bright spots of United's season has been the emergence of 18-year-old forward Mason Greenwood, and he could be handed another chance to impress in attack at Molineux:

Wolves have been difficult opponents for Manchester United over the last few seasons and another tough test awaits the Red Devils on Saturday. The home side are slight favourites for victory and it would not be a shock if they were to pour more misery on Solskjaer's inconsistent side.

Arsenal vs. Leeds

Arsenal have drawn Leeds at this stage in the FA Cup twice in recent memory, in 2011 and 2012.

The Elland Road side earned a replay with a draw at the Emirates Stadium the first time—which they lost 3-1—while the Gunners ran out 1-0 winners on the second occasion.

The Premier League side come into Monday's game on the back of a 2-0 win over Manchester United on Wednesday, their first victory under new head coach Mikel Arteta.

That win came courtesy of a superb first-half performance in which Nicolas Pepe and Sokratis Papastathopoulos provided the goals.

Arteta had breathed new life into many of the players, including Mesut Ozil, per the Telegraph's Sam Dean:

The Athletic's James McNicholas was delighted to see the positivity between the players and the manager at full-time:

Taking on the Championship leaders won't be easy. Marcelo Bielsa's side have lost just four of their 26 matches this season, conceding just 21 goals in the process.

However, they've also won just one of their last five, and with Arsenal riding high off that first win for Arteta, they'll likely come out on top here.

Chelsea vs. Nottingham Forest

Chelsea played Forest in the third round of the FA Cup last year, winning 2-0 thanks to a brace from Alvaro Morata.

They also met the Championship side in the Carabao Cup in 2017, where they eased to a 5-1 victory.

Forest come into the match fourth in the Championship, having won their last three games in a row.

Chelsea, who drew 1-1 with Brighton & Hove Albion on Wednesday, have been inconsistent of late, as Goal's Nizaar Kinsella noted:

Since the November international break, the Blues have won four matches, lost five and drawn twice.

They'll be particularly keen to get back to winning ways at Stamford Bridge after defeats to Bournemouth and Southampton in their last two home matches.

The Blues are still the favourites to come out on top in this clash, but Forest's recent momentum and consistency could cause them some problems.

Manchester City begin their defence of the FA Cup on Saturday when they host League Two side Port Vale in the third round at the Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola's team lifted the trophy for the sixth time in May, and while the competition is not a top priority, it may have grown in importance with City now looking unlikely to win the Premier League.

Port Vale are 10th in League Two but have not tasted defeat in their last five matches which may fuel belief they can pull off a cup shock.

Match Preview

Guardiola will be expected to rotate his squad for Saturday's clash, which comes in the middle of a busy run of games for the champions.

Striker Sergio Aguero could return to the starting XI after missing Wednesday's win over Everton, while Raheem Sterling was only a late substitute in midweek and may also start.

Youngsters such as Angelino, Eric Garcia, Phil Foden and Adrian Bernabe could also enjoy some game time, while John Stones may make his first appearance since the 2-1 defeat to Manchester United on December 7.

Port Vale centre-forward Tom Pope is one player who will be hoping the centre-back is fit enough to return to action:

The 34-year-old is Vale's top scorer in League Two in 2019-20 with six goals and two assists from 23 appearances, but he has failed to find the back of the net in his last six games.

However, the visitors' Colombian forward, Cristian Montano, is a player in form. The 28-year-old was Vale's man of the match in their last two games and is looking forward to facing City:

Saturday's visitors have enjoyed a good cup run in 2019-20, seeing off Cheltenham Town and Milton Keynes Dons on their way to the third round.

However, they are one of the lowest-ranked teams left in the competition and do not look to have the quality required to trouble even a heavily rotated Manchester City side.

Saturday Recap

AFC Fylde kept their FA Cup dreams alive with a win at Kingstonian that sends the Coasters into the third round for the first time in their history:

Jordan Williams rifled home the opener from the edge of the box on nine minutes from a corner and added a second from close range in stoppage time at the end of the first half.

Portsmouth had to work hard for their victory over National League North side Altrincham on the south coast.

Ben Close volleyed home a fine opening goal for the hosts, but Altrincham thought they had forced a replay when Josh Hancock equalised from the penalty spot on 84 minutes.

Christian Burgess was penalised for a foul on Jordan Hulme, and Hancock powered his spot-kick past goalkeeper Craig MacGillivray.

Pitman then broke the visitors' hearts by stooping to head the winner in the last minute of stoppage time to seal Pompey's place in the third round:

Eastleigh will also go into the hat for the next round after managing to hold Crewe.

Owen Dale had put the visitors ahead in the first half, but they were pegged back when Barnes tapped home moments after coming on:

The hosts were good value for the draw in a strong display, although Crewe could have won it late on when Daniel Powell's effort hit the woodwork.

Shrewsbury Town also managed to win despite playing the last half hour with only 10 men. Captain Ollie Norburn saw red on 60 minutes, but Mansfield could not make the most of their man advantage.

Josh Laurent netted the opener from close range after Daniel Udoh's shot was blocked, and Shrewsbury sealed the win in stoppage time when Brad Walker was sent clear and rounded the goalkeeper.
