UNLV and Davidson survived the first three rounds of Cinderella Madness to vie for the ultimate prize, the title of Cinderella Madness champion.

Eighth-seeded UNLV's path to the championship game included two wins over lower seeds before upending the fourth-seeded VCU Rams in the Final Four. Four UNLV players averaged double-figure scoring through the first three games, led by Wendell White (17.3 points per game).

Davidson earned its way largely on the play of sophomore sensation Stephen Curry. In wins over Richmond, Saint Mary's and George Mason, he scored 29, 25 and 25 points. Jason Richards proved to be Curry's most reliable sidekick, averaging 13.7 points and seven assists in the three wins.

UNLV and Davidson were evenly matched opponents through 20 minutes, with Davidson holding a narrow 31-30 lead at the break.

After intermission, the Wildcats began to exert their dominance, leading by as many as 16 points when two free throws by Williams Archambault stretched their advantage to 52-36 with 12:49 to play. UNLV closed the gap to three points with just over five minutes remaining, but never got any closer. The Wildcats pulled out the 76-70 victory and staked their claim to the Cinderella Madness championship.

Curry led all scorers with 26 points and was the easy vote for Most Outstanding Player of the Cinderella Madness tournament.

Player of the game: Stephen Curry (26 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 4 steals)

Winning Percentage of 501 Simulations: '08 Davidson 70.7% — '07 UNLV 29.3%

Bob McKillop's crew is quickly gaining a rep for their last-second heroics, and the Wildcats were propelled by another buzzer-beater in Cinderella Madness, this time with backup William Archambault serving as star in Davidson's 74-72 upending of George Mason to earn their way into the championship round.

In a matchup featuring two of the more celebrated mid-majors battling for a spot to slide into Cinderella's glass slipper, the Patriots appeared in control for most of the contest, building an 11-point advantage with nine minutes to go in the second half. Yet Davidson answered with a fury of layups and long balls, tying the game with just two minutes to go.

After Lamar Butler and Steph Curry traded jumpers, the Davidson defense was able to post a crucial stop, giving the Wildcats a chance to take the lead with just seconds remaining. The assassin Curry was wide with his attempt, but a heads-up play by the shooting guard led to his own rebound, which was then kicked out to the seldom-used Archambault. A sweet fadeaway found nothing but net, propelling the Wildcats to glory.

Curry once again led the Wildcats, throwing in 25 points and coming up big on the defensive end with three steals and two swats. Andrew Lovedale contributed with 14 points and nine boards, and Jason Richards had another solid outing to the tune of 10 points, seven assists and six boards.

In the annals of hoops, mere mortals have transcended into hardwood heroes with courageous exploits in the most maddening of moments.

Steve Kerr in Game 6 of the '97 Finals. Ali Farokhmanesh's cojones-filled bomb against Kansas in the 2010 NCAA tournament. Ollie's free throws versus the Wildcats in Hoosiers.

Add Thomas Sander's jumper in Cinderella Madness to the list, as the glue man's conquest gave Davidson a 79-77 W over St. Mary's.

The Gaels looked to put the game out of reach early, building a 15-point lead in the first half. But the Wildcats responded with vigor, raining an army of threes before heading into the locker room to cut their deficit to five.

From that juncture, both teams traded punches, with neither band able to pull away from the other. Stephen Curry unleashed his usual carnage, this time to the tune of 25 points and eight rebounds, but St. Mary big man Omar Samhan went toe-to-toe with the sharpshooter, pouring in 18 points of his own to go with 11 boards.

Enter Sander, a senior with solid if not spectacular averages of 7.5 points and 4.8 boards in the 2007-2008 season. With the score tied at 77 after a Ben Allen jumper from the top of the key, Jason Richards found Sander wide open in the corner, undoubtedly a byproduct of the Gaels' attention to Curry.

He nailed the shot, sending Davidson into the Final Four. Not only did Sander clinch the victory, but he posted an overall superb performance of 15 points and five boards. Somewhere, Robert Horry is smiling.

Samford Heads to Western Carolina for Crucial SoCon Game on Thursday Night

Feb 23, 2012

Samford (11-16, 8-8 SoCon) at Western Carolina (12-17, 6-10 SoCon)

QUICK PREVIEW:

Samford heads to Western Carolina this evening for a key SoCon North Division tilt, as the Bulldogs look to remain in contention for their first SoCon North Division crown, as well as the school's first-ever top-two finish in the SoCon's North Division since joining the league in 2008.

To get closer to that goal, the Bulldogs must overcome what has been a feisty Western Carolina club as of late, and a team the Bulldogs dropped a 75-71 decision against back in December at the Pete Hanna Center. Both the Bulldogs and Catamounts enter the matchup coming off impressive victories, with Western Carolina having pulled off a 78-76 overtime win at Elon on Saturday, while Samford held off a pesky Furman team, 55-49, at the Pete Hanna Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs and the Catamounts will be meeting for just the ninth time in series history, with Western Carolina holding the commanding 6-2 all-time series edge, which includes a 4-0 all-time series edge in Cullowhee. Samford comes into the contest continuing to be red-hot as of late, as Jimmy Tillette's Bulldogs have won seven of their last 10 games entering tonight's showdown.

Continuing to lead the way this season for the Bulldogs have been sophomore sharp-shooting center Drew Windler (13.7 PPG, 3.8 RPG) and impressive freshman post performer Tyler Hood (10.8 PPG, 3.6 RPG). Both Hood and Windler are so impressive in the Princeton-style offense with their ability to step out and hit the three-point shot. Windler led the Bulldogs in the win over Furman with 18 points, while Hood was able to chip in 11 points. Windler, the team's 6'9" center, continues to be the team's most proficient outside shooter having connected on 52-of-123 triples (42.3%) this season. Windler led the Bulldogs with 20 points in the four-point loss in Birmingham back on Dec. 1.

The Samford backcourt will include Raijon Kelly (8.8 PPG, 2.8 RPG), Jeffery Merritt (8.6 PPG, 6.7 RPG) and Will Cook (7.9 PPG, 5.1 RPG) . All three players are tough matchups in the backcourt, as all three have good size, with wing guards Cook and Kelly going 6'4", while point guard Merritt is 6'6". Merritt is a savvy point guard and will be making his 39th straight start on Thursday night against the Catamounts. Cook finished in double figures the last time these two met, as he posted 12 points in the losing effort.

Off the bench, the Bulldogs will employ the services of athletic guards Brandon Hayman (3.4 PPG, 1.8 RPG), Devin McNeil (3.9 PPG, 1.6 RPG) and Kaylin Johnson (2.9 PPG, 1.1 RPG), while senior veteran Matthew Friday (3.7 PPG, 2.2 RPG) is the most accomplished player in the front court coming off of Jimmy Tillette's bench. McNeil, a freshman guard, had one of his best performances to date the first time these two met, scoring 19 points in the meeting between the two back in early December. Samford's 8.3 three-point field goals made per game leads the Southern Conference and ranks among the Top 20 nationally.

Western Carolina enters this evening's contest in search of its third straight win when it takes to the floor against the Bulldogs on Thursday evening. The Catamounts still have a realistic shot at the No. 3 seed if they can get the victory over the Bulldogs tonight, as a win tonight would give WCU the season sweep of Samford. Like Tillette, Larry Hunter has implemented many of the same Princeton offense principles into the Catamounts' offensive approach.

The Catamounts enter the crucial North Division tilt continuing to be led by senior forward/guard Harouna Mutombo (13.0 PPG, 5.9 RPG), who is winding down his career in the Purple and Gold. Mutombo led four Catamounts in double figures the first time these two teams squared off this season, posting 18 points.

The WCU backcourt will be comprised by point guard Keaton Cole (11.9 PPG, 1.6 RPG), and wing guards Brandon Boggs (10.4 PPG, 3.9 RPG) and Trey Sumler (12.7 PPG, 4.4 RPG) will round out the starters in the backcourt for WCU. Cole continues to be one of the league's most prolific perimeter shooters, having connected on a league best 91 triples this season, averaging 3.1 made threes per game. Boggs is maybe the most athletic player in the starting five for the Catamounts, and he is the team's best on-the-ball defender.

Tawaski King (7.5 PPG, 5.5 RPG), who has been playing some of his best basketball late in the season, will round out the starting five for Hunter's Catamounts. He struggled a bit early on the season in his full-time role with some big shoes to fill, having to replace talented veteran center Richie Gordon coming into the campaign, who had graduated. King is coming off a 13-point, nine rebound effort in the win at Elon on Saturday. The top players off the bench for Western this season have been Kenneth Hall (1.4 PPG, 2.2 RPG) and James Sinclair (2.0 PPG, 1.7 RPG) in the backcourt, while Preston Ross (4.3 PPG, 3.3 RPG) has been the first player off the bench in the front court this season.

For a team that has struggled for much of the season, Western Carolina is playing like a team that many thought would compete for a North Division title for a third-straight season, and with the tournament returning to Asheville next week, this momentum could help make the Civic Center a great atmosphere for the Catamounts next Thursday. Catamounts will complete the season sweep of the Bulldogs in Cullowhee tonight.

FINAL SCORE PREDICITION: WESTERN CAROLINA 68, SAMFORD 62

Davidson and Elon Have Plenty to Play for Thursday Night

Feb 22, 2012

Elon (13-14, 8-8 SoCon) at Davidson (20-7, 14-2 SoCon)

QUICK PREVIEW:

It might be the most important game on an evening filled with crucial league tilts, with teams jockeying for positioning for the upcoming Southern Conference basketball tournament in Asheville, N.C.

For Elon, Thursday night's game takes on special importance, as the Phoenix are in a fight to get their first-ever bye in the Southern Conference Tournament, as they are currently tied with Samford for second place in the North Division standings. However, as a result of Samford's two victories over the Phoenix this season, the bye would go to the Bulldogs in the event of a tie.

It's also a return to home, so to speak, for Elon head coach Matt Matheny, who spent 16 seasons on the Davidson sidelines as Bob McKillop's top assistant before matriculating to Elon prior to the 2009-10 season.

Matheny's Phoenix have struggled as of late, as Elon comes into the contest losers of four straight, including a 78-76 overtime loss to Western Carolina on Saturday afternoon at Alumni Gym. A win on Thursday night by the Wildcats would give Davidson the SoCon's North Division crown.

Elon and Davidson will be meeting for the 47th time on Thursday night, with the Wildcats holding a commanding 33-13 all-time series edge.

The Phoenix enter the matchup led by Jack Isenbarger (14.0 PPG, 3.5 RPG). Isenbarger has started 12 of 25 games for the Phoenix this season and is one of the top perimeter shooters in the Southern Conference this season. He enters Thursday night's contest having connected on 64 triples this season and is shooting 40 percent (64-of-160) from three-point range this season.

Isenbarger, who will play the shooting guard position for the Phoenix on Thursday, will be joined in the backcourt by both Sebastian Koch (9.1 PPG, 5.2 RPG) and Drew Spradlin (10.8 PPG, 3.2 RPG).

Both Koch and Spradlin are good perimeter shooters, with Koch ranking second on the club with 54 triples made this season. Spradlin is one of Elon's veteran-most players, leading the club with 14 all-time 20-point scoring games, including a pair of 20-point efforts this season.

Set to start underneath the basket for the Phoenix on Thursday night will be Lucas Troutman (12.5 PPG, 5.4 RPG) and Ryley Beaumont (7.3 PPG, 6.5 RPG). Both have proven to be solid performers for the Phoenix on the offensive interior this season, with Troutman posting 16 points in an 83-75 loss to the Wildcats.

Beaumont is coming off of one of his most complete efforts of the season, as he posted 11 points and 12 boards in Elon's last outing against Western Carolina.

Leading Elon off the bench this season has been Brett Ervin (5.5 PPG, 3.8 RPG), who is now part of a thin bench, which doesn't give Matheny all that much in the way of point production.

For Davidson, this is a chance to clinch their first South Division title since the Stephen Curry Era, but the Wildcats are struggling a bit as of late. They have dropped two of their last three games, yielding their two highest point totals of the season in losses to College of Charleston and Wichita State.

Davidson is 12-2 on its home floor this season and a perfect 7-0 against SoCon competition in the friendly surroundings of Belk Arena.

It will be senior night at Belk Arena, where the Wildcats will honor three rarely-used seniors that come off the bench. Bob McKillop's Wildcats have been a junior-dominated team this season, led by center Jake Cohen (13.9 PPG, 6.0 RPG), who leads a trio of starting juniors for the Wildcats in scoring.

Cohen is part of a starting five that features starters who all average in double figures this season, though Cohen scored just five points in Davidson's 83-75 triumph over the Phoenix at Belk Arena last season. He ranks second in the SoCon with 37 blocks this season.

Joining Cohen underneath the basket will be super sophomore forward De'Mon Brooks (15.5 PPG, 6.2 RPG). Brooks struggled with back spasms in Saturday's BracketBusters loss to Wichita State, which forced him to the sidelines for the entire second half of that contest.

Brooks is the best athlete on the Davidson team, as well as the most talented individual player. Brooks enters the contest having scored 20 or more points in a game nine times in his two years in a Davidson uniform, with eight of those 20-point performances coming in the 2011-12 season.

The starting trio in the backcourt is as talented as any backcourt in the SoCon, and maybe of any mid-major school in the country. Junior Nik Cochran (11.3 PPG, 3.6 APG) will hold down the point guard responsibilities on Thursday night, while J.P. Kuhlman (11.2 PPG, 3.7 RPG) and Chris Czerapowicz (10.4 PPG, 4.4 RPG) will play each of the respective wing guard positions for the Wildcats.

It was Cochran and Kuhlman who ran the show when the Wildcats and Phoenix met last February, with the duo combining for 51 of the team's 83 points, including a career-high 29 points from Cochran. Czerapowicz enters Thursday evening's matchup ranked fifth in the SoCon in three-pointers made this season, with 56 treys.

Off the bench, the Wildcats will look to get production from Tom Droney (4.3 PPG, 3.6 RPG) and talented freshman Tyler Kalinoski (4.6 PPG, 2.1 RPG) in the backcourt, while Clint Mann (5.4 PPG, 3.0 RPG) will be the top player off McKillop's bench in the frontcourt.

Droney is one of Davidson's best one-on-one defenders and Kalinoski is a potent outside shooter.

This game is crucial for both clubs. A Davidson win clinches their first South Division crown since the graduation of Stephen Curry, and would lock up the No. 1 overall seed for the upcoming Southern Conference Basketball Tournament, slated to commence next weekend in Asheville.

That top seed would mean the Wildcats could do no worse than a National Invitational Tournament bid this season if they were to lose in the SoCon Tournament.

A win for Elon helps the Phoenix keep their hopes alive for their first North Division title since joining the SoCon in 2003-04. A win by Elon would also give the Phoenix their most wins (14) under the direction of Matt Matheny, now in his third season at the helm of the program.

However, I expect Davidson to win this game, although, it might produce the 32nd conference game of the season to be decided by one possession.

FINAL SCORE PREDICTION: DAVIDSON 80, ELON 77

GREENVILLE, S.C. It will be a crucial Saturday in Southern Conference basketball with all 12 teams in action. Appalachian State will go in search of its second-straight win over the College of Charleston Cougars at the Holmes Convocation Center...

SoCon South: Furman Hosts Davidson Tonight in a Division Rivalry

Feb 1, 2012

Davidson (15-5, 9-1 SoCon) at Furman (11-10, 5-5 SoCon), 7:00 PM

GAME PREVIEW:

Furman is a basketball team that is heating up as we head into the month of February, playing some of its best basketball of the 2011-12 season entering Wednesday night's game against league juggernaut Davidson.

The Wildcats enter the contest coming off their first loss of the conference season, as the Wildcats were 77-74 losers at Samford on Saturday afternoon. Meanwhile, the Paladins enter the contest having won four of their last five games, including a 67-58 win at The Citadel on Saturday night.

Saturday night's meeting between the Wildcats and Paladins marks the second of the season between the Paladins and Wildcats, with Davidson posting an 86-65 win in the first meeting between the two South Division rivals earlier this season.

Davidson and Furman have met 156 times in the history of the series, with the Wildcats holding a commanding 95-61 all-time series edge. The Wildcats have 28 of the last 30 meetings between the two schools, but it was Furman that claimed an 88-79 win over the Wildcats when Davidson visited Timmons Arena last season.

Furman has been able to get back into the mix in the South Division by playing sound on the defensive end of the floor. The Paladins come into Wednesday night's contest ranking second in the SoCon in scoring defense, as the Paladins are holding foes to just 63.9 PPG this season. The Paladins are also ranking towards the top of the league in field goal percentage defense, entering the contest ranking fifth in the league in field goal percentage defense, holding teams to 43.3% shooting from the field.

Davidson will bring one of the most physical teams in the SoCon to Timmons Arena on Wednesday night. Prior to Saturday afternoon's loss at Samford, the Wildcats were winners of 13 straight regular season Southern Conference games.

Wednesday night's matchup will match two of the league's top big men against each other, in Davidson's Jake Cohen (14.2 PPG, 6.1 RPG) and Furman's Brandon Sebirumbi (10.8 PPG, 5.3 RPG).

Both Cohen and Sebirumbi have been two of the hottest post players in the Southern Conference of late, with Cohen having scored in double figures in seven of the past eight games, with his lone non-double figure scoring effort coming in Saturday afternoon's 77-74 setback at Samford. Six of the past eight games have seen Cohen total 20 or points, winning SoCon Player of the Week accolades during that time-span.

Joining Cohen down in the paint for the Wildcats on Wednesday night will be De'Mon Brooks (15.2 PPG, 6.4 RPG), who has continued to have a solid season for the Wildcats. Brooks continues to lead the Wildcats in scoring this season, and performed well in the initial matchup between the two this season, as he totaled 15 points and seven boards in the Wildcats' big win back in early December. Brooks is coming off a solid performance in the loss at Samford on Saturday, as Brooks posted 20 points on 8-for-13 shooting from the field and was 4-of-6 from the charity stripe in the three-point loss to the Bulldogs.

Brooks enters Wednesday night's game ranking sixth in the SoCon in scoring, and his 52.4% shooting clip from the field marks the seventh-best shooting clip in the Southern Conference entering the contest. In six games this season, Brooks has scored 20 or more points. He is easily the Wildcats' best athletic presence on the floor, and he will likely cause Furman matchup problems this evening, as he has pretty much every opponent in the SoCon this season.

Sebirumbi will be joined underneath the Paladin basket by Chris Toler (3.1 PPG, 2.3 RPG), who Furman head coach Jeff Jackson has called Furman's top post defender coming into the season. Toler enters the contest as not much of a scoring presence at all, but he has proven to be a solid defender in the post when he can stay out of foul trouble. He will have a tough assignment tonight, whether he draws Cohen or Brooks.

The Davidson backcourt trio is solid and experienced. Coming into the contest, the Wildcats have a pair of guards averaging in double figures, in point guard Nic Cochran (11.8 PPG, 2.5 RPG, 3.3 APG) and wing guard J.P. Kuhlman (11.6 PPG, 4.2 RPG). Both Kuhlman and Cochran are excellent scorers, as well as being excellent on-the-ball defenders. Cochran is the team's second-most prolific perimeter shooter, and he has connected on 35 triples for the season.

Kuhlman might be the Wildcats' best all-around player, and he comes in leading the team on the defensive end of the floor, as he comes into this evening's contest with 22 thefts on the season. He comes in shooting 36.0% (27-of-75) from three-point range this season.

In a backcourt that prides itself on good defensive play, the best defender might be sophomore Tom Droney (4.7 PPG, 3.6 RPG). Droney was a player that helped shut down Amu Saaka in the first meeting between the Paladins and Wildcats last season, holding Saaka to a meager six points in the Paladins' 79-70 setback at Belk Arena last season. Droney is one of the top defensive players in the league, and he will likely draw the assignment of trying to lock down Furman's Charlie Reddick (10.1 PPG, 4.9 RPG) this evening.

Reddick leads what has been a Furman backcourt that has continued to make progress as the 2011-12 season has progressed. Like the play of Sebirumbi in the front court for the Paladins as of late, it's been Reddick's play in the backcourt that has given Furman some scoring balance and versatility over the past five games, and that has been one of the big reasons the Paladins are playing some of their best basketball of the campaign over the the last half of the month of January.

In the initial meeting between the Paladins and Wildcats this season, Reddick finished just outside of double digits in total points, finishing with nine on 3-for-9 shooting from the field, but was 0-for-2 from three. Reddick is averaging 13.3 PPG and 6.3 RPG over the last four outings.

Reddick is the Paladins' top perimeter shooter this season, as he has connected on a team-leading 43 triples this season, shooting 39.4% (43-for-109) from three-point range this season. Reddick is also playing well on the defensive end of the court for the Paladins, leading the team in steals (23) and blocks (14).

Joining Reddick in the starting backcourt this evening will likely be freshman point guard Jordan Lloyd (4.2 PPG, 3.1 RPG, 21 assists) and wing guard Bobby Austin (7.2 PPG, 2.5 RPG). Lloyd has had to grow up fast as of late, but has continued to show maturity and why he was such a highly-touted recruit coming out of high school.

Furman has won all three games on the road that Lloyd has started. He has had to step into the starting role as a result of regular starter Richard Brown (8.8 PPG, 3.3 RPG) having been sidelined with back issues. Lloyd is coming off a solid performance against The Citadel, as he scored seven points, dished out three assists and turned the ball over only once in the 67-58 win.

Austin is an excellent defensive presence in the backcourt for the Paladins and along with Reddick, might be the best athlete on the roster. He has 10 blocks this season, but he needs to be more aggressive on the offensive end of the floor, as evidenced in his performance in the 32-point win over The Citadel at home back in early January.

In that contest, the redshirt senior posted a career-high 17 points. Austin nearly found his way into double figures the last time out in the road win at The Citadel, posting nine points on 3-for-5 from the field, including 1-for-3 from three in the game.

As is usually the case when head coach Bob McKillop has a title-contending team in Davidson, N.C., his Wildcats come to Greenville on Monday night with one of the deepest benches in the league.

In the backcourt, Chris Czerapowicz (9.2 PPG, 4.4 RPG) and freshman Tyler Kalinoski (5.2 PPG, 2.2 RPG) are the top players off the bench for the Wildcats. Czerapowicz is the best perimeter shooter for the Wildcats, and he enters the contest with a team-leading 35 triples this season, but is shooting just 31.8% (35-for-110) from three-point land this season. The top players off the bench in the front court for the Wildcats are Clint Mann (5.7 PPG, 2.9 RPG) and Frank Ben-Eze (0.8 PPG, 1.4 RPG) are the top performers.

Furman has one of the top benches in the league this season, and that's primarily because the Paladins have spread their scoring more across the team this season, as opposed to last, even though Furman was a deeper team in 2010-11. Bryson Barnes (7.8 PPG, 4.7 RPG, 10 blocks) is the Paladins' top performer off the bench and gives the Paladins instant offense and energy. His prowess as one of the league's top shot-blockers can shift the momentum of a game.

Bryant Irwin (7.9 PPG, 3.3 RPG), a St. Joseph's transfer, has been inconsistent as a scorer this season, but he has the ability to score points in a hurry with his ability as a perimeter shooter. That was the case in last week's win at College of Charleston. Irwin has knocked down 30 treys this season to rank second on the team. Irwin had his best game as a Paladin the first time Furman met Davidson this season, posting 21 points.

Also set to contribute in the front court will be athletic freshman small forward Dominic Early (3.9 PPG, 1.8 RPG) and Colin Reddick (4.7 PPG, 3.7 RPG), who has stepped up his play of late and always seems to play well against Davidson. In the backcourt, look for David Brown (2.8 PPG, 0.8 APG) to see plenty of action as Furman's understudy at the point.

While Furman is turning out to be a better basketball team than most thought this season, it's still a tall order to take a Davidson team that is head and shoulders above the rest of the SoCon this season, especially coming off their first league loss of the 2011-12 season. Davidson pulls away in the second half after a tight opening 20 minutes.

FINAL SCORE PREDICTION: DAVIDSON 72, FURMAN 60

Western Carolina Heads to Wofford for a Crucial North-South SoCon Clash Tonight

Jan 30, 2012

Western Carolina (9-13, 3-6 SoCon) at Wofford (14-8, 7-3 SoCon), 7 p.m.

GAME PREVIEW:

Wofford will look to keep things moving in a positive direction on Monday night, hosting Western Carolina at the Benjamin-Johnson Arena. Wofford enters Monday night's contest having won seven of its last nine games. They have won five straight to soar to second place in the Southern Conference South Division standings, while Western Carolina enters the contest having lost seven of its last nine games, including its last three outings.

Wofford was in action on Saturday afternoon, and the Terriers were able to complete the Charleston sweep by getting a 68-59 road win over the Cougars. Meanwhile, Western Carolina dropped a heartbreaker to UNC Greensboro, with an 89-86 overtime setback at the Greensboro Coliseum on Saturday afternoon.

Saturday's meeting will mark the second of the season between the Terriers and Catamounts, with Western Carolina picking up a 67-57 win in Cullowhee back on Jan. 7th.

The meeting between the Terriers and Catamounts will mark the two teams' 41st meeting on the hardwood, with Western Carolina holding a 23-18 series edge.

The 10-point win by WCU in early January helped snap a three-game losing streak to the Terriers, including two losses which came in the Southern Conference semifinal game each of the past two seasons.

Wofford has gotten it done on the defensive end so far this season, continuing to lead the league in scoring defense with 61.6 PPG, entering Monday night's contest. Point guard Brad Loesing (14.0 PPG, 3.1 RPG) has really had to increase his role as a scorer in this, his senior season for the Old Gold and Black.

He enters the matchup continuing to rank third in the Southern Conference in assists, averaging 5.3 helpers per game. Loesing was an integral part of the foundation for the teams that claimed Southern Conference crowns in each of the past two seasons, and looks to maintain this role with his team that sits just six wins from a third-straight 20-win season.

In the first meeting between the Terriers and Catamounts this season, Loesing tied for team-high honors with 20 points in the 10-point setback to WCU.

Loesing was joined by Kevin Giltner (16.0 PPG, 4.0 RPG) in his leadership role.

Giltner currently leads the team in scoring and ranks fourth overall in the SoCon. Giltner is one of the deadliest shooters from the perimeter in the SoCon, and he enters the contest ranking third in the league in three-pointers made, having made 56 this season.

Giltner failed to reach double figures the first time these two met, scoring just eight points. Giltner is coming off a 15-point effort in the win over CofC, as he connected on 4-of-13 shots from the field, but was just 1-for-7 from three-point range in the contest.

Joining Loesing in the starting five in the backcourt Monday night will be talented freshman Karl Cochran (11.3 PPG, 4.7 RPG), who's making a strong case for Southern Conference Freshman of the Year honors. Cochran led the Terriers in scoring against the College of Charleston on Saturday afternoon at TD Arena, as he posted 18 points in the nine-point win.

Cochran has become known as the "College of Charleston killer," having posted team-leading performances in both meetings with the Cougars this season. He also posted a career-high 21 points in the first meeting with CofC. In Cochran's first-career encounter with the Catamounts this season, he was equally impressive, tying for team-high honors with 20 points in the 10-point loss. Cochran also shoots the ball well from the perimeter, as he enters the game having connected on 45 triples this season, which ranks second on the team.

Joining Giltner underneath the basket in head coach Mike Young's starting five on Monday night will be the reliable Drew Crowell (9.2 PPG, 5.3 RPG) and the powerful Aerris Smith (4.2 PPG, 2.9 RPG). Crowell came into the season with some huge shoes to fill, having to the replace two-time Southern Conference Player of the Year Noah Dahlman on the interior last season. Crowell is coming off a 12-point, seven-rebound performance in the win at College of Charleston on Saturday afternoon.

The Charleston native scored double figures in both of his games in his return to his hometown, as he also posted 12 points in Wofford's 62-55 win over The Citadel on Thursday night.

In the first meeting between the Catamounts and Terriers this season, Crowell posted just four points. Crowell continues to lead the league in field-goal percentage, entering the contest with a 61.8 percent clip for the season.

Smith, a sophomore forward, rounds out the starting five for the Terriers, and he has basically taken on the role of what Tim Johnson gave the Terriers last season. He's not looked to as a scorer, but is good on the boards and is a hard worker underneath the basket. Smith is also a solid post defender, and posted two points in the previous meeting with the Catamounts this season.

The main players coming off the bench for the Terriers are Lee Skinner (4.9 PPG, 5.9 RPG) and Jarrell Byrd (2.3 PPG, 2.3 RPG), as both have been impressive this season, giving Wofford depth in the frontcourt. Skinner's 5.9 RPG leads the club.

The Catamounts will enter this evening's matchup looking for their first conference victory since beating the Terriers, 67-57, back on Jan. 7th. In fact, since that meeting, the Catamounts have gone just 1-5 against competition. Additionally, since the first meeting with the Terriers, WCU is 0-5 against Division I foes. The lone win since that Jan. 7 meeting was a 141-39 victory over Toccoa Falls.

Western Carolina enters the contest continuing to be led by one of the best backcourts in the SoCon,  led by leading scorer Harouna Mutombo (13.3 PPG, 6.0 RPG) and point guard Trey Sumler (12.7 PPG, 4.5 RPG). The Catamounts have gotten some big outings of late from Sumler, as he has led the Catamounts in scoring in each of the past five games, leading the Purple and Gold with 22 points in the 89-86 overtime loss to UNCG on Saturday.

Sumler was one of four players in double figures the first time these two teams met, as he posted 12 points in the 67-57 win earlier this season. Sumler has struggled shooting the ball from long range this season, connecting on just 24-of-73 from three-point range this season, which is a 32.9 percent clip for the season.

Mutombo is a player that does the little things that enables the Catamounts to be in position to win in nearly every game they play. Mutombo is a good one-on-one defender and he rebounds the basketball better than any other player in Catamount in the lineup. The first time these two played, Mutombo was also one of those four Catamounts in double figures, as he finished the contest with 11 points in the 10-point victory. The last time out against the Spartans, Mutombo came off the bench for the Catamounts and he posted 14 points in that role the last time out.

One of the players that drew a rare start as a result of Mutombo coming off the bench the last time out was James Sinclair (2.6 PPG, 1.9 RPG). Sinclair, a 6-2 freshman guard from Savannah, GA., is an excellent defensive presence for the Purple and Gold. He scored just three points in the contest against the Spartans, but he gives the Catamounts great energy and work ethic in the backcourt.

Another player that has spent most of his time coming off the bench this season has been point guard Keaton Cole (11.3 PPG, 1.6 RPG). Cole is one of the team's most prolific scoring threats for the Catamounts, and he leads the league in three-pointers made this season, as he has connected on 64 triples on the season. He is coming off a strong performance in Saturday's loss at UNC Greensboro, as he posted a team-leading 22 points and was 4-for-6 from three-point range in the heartbreaking setback. Cole led the Catamounts with 22 points the first time the Catamounts and Terriers got together on the basketball hardwood, tying a career-record with six triples in the contest.

The front court will be comprised by Brandon Boggs (10.7 PPG, 3.7 RPG), who plays more like a combo guard, and Tawaski King (6.8 PPG, 4.9 RPG), who's coming off one of his most solid performances for the Catamounts, as he posted a double-double of 12 points and 11 boards the last time out.

Boggs is one of the team's top athletes and defensive performers. He was solid in the first meeting with the Terriers this season, and finished on the cusp of double figures, as he finished the contest with nine points.

King is big and physical and has been able to stay out of foul trouble early in games lately. He has really stepped up and played well as of late, especially on the backboards.

A couple of players that have really helped the Catamounts' cause off the bench this season have been Ishmael Hollis (3.7 PPG, 2.2 RPG) and Preston Ross (4.8 PPG, 3.9 RPG). Hollis a good perimeter shooter coming off the bench and Ross is a player that is a hard worker and good athlete. He has started 13 of the 22 games this season for the Catamounts.

Quite simply, this game is much more critical to Western Carolina's cause than that of Wofford. The Catamounts must win this game tonight to stay in contention in the North Division. A loss tonight would put the two-time defending North Division champs a solid three games out of first place in the SoCon North. Wofford has played extremely well on its home floor this season, entering Monday night's encounter with an 8-1 mark on the home hardwood, with the only loss on the home floor coming at the hands of Davidson (72-69) back in early December. Terriers should be able to defend the home floor tonight, but it won't be as easy as some might think.

FINAL SCORE PREDICTION: WOFFORD 68, WESTERN CAROLINA 64
