Report: Bill Belichick, UNC HC Contract Decision Expected This Week amid Rumors

North Carolina is maintaining a dialogue with former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick about their vacancy, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel.

Thamel reported a resolution one way or the other is expected this week..

When it comes to the Tar Heels' search, he added that Tulane head coach Jon Sumrall and Pittsburgh Steelers offensive coordinator Arthur Smith "were two names most prominently linked to the job when it opened." Both removed themselves from contention.

Belichick is a six-time Super Bowl champion and one of the greatest coaches in NFL history. He was an unexpected candidate for UNC, though, because he hasn't worked in the college ranks before. The 72-year-old's famously surly demeanor would also be an odd fit in today's game.

Bill's son Stephen at least has some college experience after joining Jedd Fisch's staff at Washington this season as the defensive coordinator. Thamel reported Stephen would potentially follow his dad to Chapel Hill were Bill to get the job.

The MMQB's Albert Breer offered more context behind why Belichick is warming to the idea of coaching in college.

"Belichick and folks around him have really studied the current state of the college game, and what they've found has, well, a lot in common with the NFL," Breer wrote. "If NIL is the salary cap, and the transfer portal is free agency, then you can see where Belichick might have confidence that what some folks would see as adjustment for him being a potential advantage."

Belichick is also encouraged by the changes in the NCAA rules that allow for non-coaching staffers to recruit, per Breer. Because of that, he "wouldn't need to do home visits to land 18-year-olds," with the NFL insider citing Colorado head coach Deion Sanders as an example.

It's a comparison that may not work, though, because Sanders is such a singular star with limitless charisma. As a Hall of Fame cornerback, he has also reached the kind of heights professionally prospective recruits want to attain.

Belichick simply can't match that.

Traditional recruiting hasn't even been a strength for Colorado during the Coach Prime era, either. The Buffs were 95th nationally in 247Sports' composite team rankings for 2024 and have moved up to 37th for 2025, which is only good for fourth in the Big 12.

Belichick and North Carolina would've have advanced this far if he weren't a serious candidate. But there's still going to be a level of shock if he's the final choice.

Tom Brady Says He Can't Imagine Bill Belichick Being a College HC Amid UNC Rumors

Amid rumors that legendary head coach Bill Belichick is in the running for the vacant head coaching position at North Carolina, Tom Brady weighed in on the situation.

Brady said that while Belichick was an outstanding NFL coach, the college ranks might be too much for him.

"No," Brady said (3:40 mark). "I think there's a lot of things he can do and obviously he's tremendous and even showing his personality, but getting out there on the recruiting trail and getting all these college kids..."

Earlier this week, Grant Hughes of 247Sports reported that Belichick interviewed with North Carolina after the program fired head coach Mack Brown in November. CBS Sports' Jonathan Jones reported on Friday that Belichick had a second meeting with the Tar Heels and that the former New England Patriots coach has "literally been open to all of it."

What's driving Belichick's desire to get back into the coaching game? ESPN Chicago's Peggy Kusinski reported that he "wants to prove his coaching legacy at the college level without Tom Brady's shadow over him."

While there have been plenty of reports noting that Belichick has a serious interest in the job, some insiders aren't convinced he would take it. ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported on SportsCenter on Saturday that "some people around the NFL are a little bit skeptical," just as Brady is.

While it may take a while to determine how serious of a candidate Belichick is, it would be quite a sight to see him enter the collegiate ranks. Belichick, who has been in the coaching world since the 1970s, has never served as a coach in any capacity for a college team.

North Carolina is hoping to find the coach that can take them to the promised land, and perhaps a six-time Super Bowl-winning coach could be the answer.

ESPN: Clemson's Dabo Swinney Reacts to Texas Game, 'Gonna Meet Matthew McConaughey!''

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney has more than just a playoff game to be excited for.

His Tigers earned the final spot in the College Football Playoff with their ACC Championship victory over SMU Saturday night. They will head to Austin to take on Texas in the first round and Molly McGrath of ESPN reported that Swinney excitedly exclaimed "I'm gonna meet Matthew McConaughey" after hearing the placement.

McConaughey is a professor of practice at Texas and is a consistent presence on the Longhorns sidelines during the season. The actor is also an alum of the University.

While Swinney may have the opportunity to meet McConaughey, the mood may be a bit less jovial by the time that meet-up occurs.

Texas fell to Georgia in the SEC Championship Game, which ended the Longhorns bid for a first-round bye. They finished the season 11-2 with both losses coming at the hands of the Bulldogs.

Clemson, on the other hand, went 10-3 and needed the Conference Championship victory to qualify. The Tigers lost to the same Georgia team at the start of the season and picked up additional losses to Louisville and South Carolina.

Texas should enter the game as the favorite but Clemson's big victory over SMU will provide it with some positive momentum ahead of the matchup.

Report: Bill Belichick 'Wants to Prove' Legacy in CFB 'Without Tom Brady's Shadow'

Bill Belichick is arguably the greatest coach in NFL history, but his next stop might be in the college game.

ESPN Chicago's Peggy Kusinski reported Sunday that Belichick "wants to prove his coaching legacy at the college level without Tom Brady's shadow over him."

With that as the backdrop, she noted there are ongoing contract negotiations between the legendary coach and North Carolina after the ACC program fired Mack Brown.

The idea of Belichick coaching at North Carolina seemed almost unfathomable not that long ago.

Yet there has been no shortage of reporting on the possibility. Inside Carolina (h/t Grant Hughes of 247Sports) first reported the two sides met, while Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reported there was s second meeting.

According to The Athletic's Dianna Russini, a source familiar with Belichick's thinking "expects" he would accept the job if the Tar Heels offered.

And NFL Network's Tom Pelissero and Ian Rapoport noted the coach is "fairly serious" about a jump to college:

ESPN's Jeremy Fowler appeared on Saturday's SportCenter and said some are "skeptical" of Belichick's interest in a college job, while others believe there is "some genuine interest." Fowler noted Belichick's son Steve, who is the defensive coordinator for the Washington Huskies, could join him at North Carolina.

This would be quite the twist as Belichick continues to build his legacy.

Kusinski specifically highlighted his desire to do so away from "Brady's shadow," which is notable since the coach and quarterback combination were the central pieces to arguably the greatest dynasty in NFL history. They won six Super Bowls together on the New England Patriots, although Brady added a seventh ring after he joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Winning in college, especially at a program that is not historically dominant like North Carolina, would be quite the addition to Belichick's resume and give him something to point to that happened outside of his time with Brady.

Still, he is also just 14 wins behind Don Shula's all-time NFL record of 347 regular season and playoff victories.

Winning with the Tar Heels wouldn't help him chase that record and potentially secure his spot as the greatest NFL coach in history.

SMU HC: 'Would Be Criminal' if Mustangs Left Out of CFP Bracket After ACC Title Loss

SMU head coach Rhett Lashlee said it would be "criminal" for the CFP selection committee to leave his team out of the playoff after Saturday's 34-31 ACC championship game loss to Clemson.

"It would be criminal if we are not in," Lashlee said, per Yahoo Sports' Ross Dellenger. "It would be wrong not just to our team but to what college football stands for."

Lashlee added: "We could have not showed up, and according to what we saw Tuesday night, we'd be in. We showed it. We should be in. They know we should be in."

SMU was ranked No. 8 and Clemson was ranked No. 17 in the most recent CFP rankings released Tuesday. The Tigers then claimed the ACC title with a game-winning field goal as time expired on Saturday night.

Clemson sacked SMU quarterback Kevin Jennings and recovered the fumble on the first drive of the game, setting the tone for the first half. The Mustangs gave up 14 points in the first five minutes and went into the halftime break trailing 24-7.

SMU spent the second half launching a comeback, culminating with Jennings sending a tying touchdown pass to Roderick Daniels Jr. with 16 seconds left on the clock.

But the Tigers made it within 56 yards of the field goal on their final possession of the game, and Nolan Hauser's kick sealed the Clemson victory.

The loss marked the first time the Mustangs had trailed by more than 11 points this season, as noted by the Associated Press' Aaron Beard, as well as the team's first loss to an ACC opponent.

ACC commissioner Jim Phillips has been attempting to prepare the selection committee for this possibility. He said in a Thursday appearance on the ACC Network that SMU should "unequivocally" make the playoff regardless of Saturday's result.

"They're 11-1. They're 8-0 in the league," Phillips said. "The only Power 4 teams that went unblemished in conference play was Oregon and SMU."

The Ducks likely locked in their No. 1 seed after improving to 13-0 with a 45-37 Big Ten championship game win over Penn State on Saturday night.

SMU meanwhile dropped to join a bevy of two-loss teams fighting for an at-large bid to the expanded playoff.

Should the Mustangs be left out of the CFP, it would mark the second season in a row during which an ACC team was arguably snubbed. Florida State earned a 12-0 regular-season record and conference championship game victory last season before getting left out of the four-team playoff.

The final playoff bracket will be released on Sunday. The College Football Playoff selection show begins at noon ET.

Dabo Swinney Shouts Out Syracuse HC for Miami Upset After Clemson Wins ACC Title

The tables have turned just a week after Syracuse head coach Fran Brown gave a shoutout to Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney after the Orange's upset of Miami helped the Tigers punch their ticket to the ACC title game.

"Hey Dabo Swinney, congrats," Brown said after the win. "I got you in baby."

In response, after No. 17 Clemson's 34-31 upset victory over the No. 8 SMU Mustangs on Saturday night, Swinney referenced Brown during his postgame remarks.

"I want to give Fran Brown a shoutout! We appreciate the opportunity to be here tonight," Swinney said, per Sports Illustrated's Bryan Fischer.

Swinney also advocated for SMU to make the College Football Playoff:

"What a game. Listen that's a playoff football team," Swinney said post-game. "SMU, they better be in the dang playoffs. What a comeback by those guys."

Last weekend, the Tigers relied on a Miami loss to secure their place in the ACC Championship Game against SMU. Syracuse's victory ensured Clemson's advancement to the conference title game, leaving Miami out of contention, falling to third.

Clemson jumped out to a commanding 21-7 lead in the first quarter and extended it to 24-7 by halftime on Saturday against SMU. The Mustangs mounted a spirited comeback, scoring 24 second-half points and tying the game with just 16 seconds left in regulation.

However, the effort fell short as Clemson's kicker, Nolan Hauser, drilled a 56-yard field goal as time expired to secure the victory.

Clemson is headed to the College Football Playoff.

Faced with a win-and-in situation in the ACC Championship, Clemson did just that by earning a 34-31 victory over SMU via a 56-yard game-winning field goal from Nolan Hauser.

The Tigers jumped out to a 24-3 halftime lead and would enter the final quarter up 31-10. However, the Mustangs put together an excellent fourth quarter to nearly pull of the victory.

Clemson produced 326 offensive yards and forced two SMU turnovers. The rushing attack had just 62 yards but quarterback Cade Klubnik took charge in leading the offense.

Klubnik went 24-of-41 for 262 yards with four touchdowns on the day. His connection with wide receiver Bryant Wesco Jr. was especially potent as the true freshman had eight catches for 142 yards and two touchdown.

Klubnik tossed three of his touchdowns in the first quarter, becoming the first player to throw three touchdown passes in a single quarter in the history of the ACC Championship Game.

However, the hero of the day was Hauser, who hit the longest field goal of his career and the longest in ACC Championship history at the most crucial time.

Fans took to social media to praise his clutch kick.

The Clemson victory also complicates the playoff field selection for Sunday. Clemson would not have qualified with a loss but their inclusion will mean that a team that was in line to make the playoff will be left out.

That could be SMU, who fall to 11-2 and were ranked No. 8 heading into the game. It also could be Alabama, who entered the weekend as the last team expected to qualify and did not play in a Conference Championship Game.

Fans took to social media to revel in the chaos and debate who should be included.

It will be an interesting debate among the playoff committee and the 2023 exclusion of ACC Champion Florida State has many wondering if a similar decision will be made.

The field will be finalized on Sunday and will be released at noon E.T.

ACC Commish Confuses Jordan Travis as Miami, SMU's QB in Viral CFP Debate Video

ACC commissioner Jim Phillips flubbed his remarks twice on College GameDay when defending SMU amid the College Football Playoff debate on the Mustangs.

"Last year we suffered through having to hear about Jordan Travis being out and Miami not being the same," Phillips said, per Zach Blostein of Noles247.

"Well, it cuts both ways. Since Jordan Travis took over, they're [SMU] is 9-0. They have more Power 4 wins than Texas does. They're 8-0 in the conference."

Travis was the starting quarterback for the 2023 Florida State Seminoles, not Miami. FSU missed out on the four-team College Football Playoff despite going 13-0 and winning the ACC. Then-CFP committee chair Boo Corrigan cited Travis' season-ending injury on Nov. 18, 2023, as a reason for FSU missing the playoff.

Second, SMU moved to Kevin Jennings over Preston Stone as its starting quarterback after the season's first three weeks, which were capped by an 18-15 loss to BYU. SMU has since rolled off nine straight wins, including an 8-0 conference record, en route to an ACC Championship Game appearance Saturday against Clemson.

SMU, of course, is in the CFP if it beats Clemson for the conference title on Saturday evening. If not, then the Mustangs may need to hold their breath until the CFP field is revealed.

At this time, SMU is eighth in the CFP ranking. Indiana sits ninth at 11-1, with a loss to Ohio State. Boise State is 10th, but the Broncos are in after capturing the Mountain West conference title.

No Big 12 team was in the top 14 going into the weekend, but that champion will get an automatic berth.

So the team at the center of this debate is Alabama, with a 9-3 record, at No. 11.

In a recent conversation with reporters, CFP chair Warde Manuel had this to say when asked if SMU could fall below Alabama with a loss: "Potentially, yes. And they can move above teams, as well. Again, it just depends on the outcome of the game."

That, of course, raises a few questions.

For starters, SMU lost two fewer games than Alabama.

Second, SMU would in essence get punished for playing one more game than Alabama, begging the question of whether it would incentivize the Mustangs to avoid playing in the ACC Championship at all.

Of course, Alabama could point to playing in a much tougher conference and a high-quality victory over No. 5 Georgia, so the debate would rage on if SMU lost.

The bottom line is this: There's a lot at stake here. SMU might need all the lobbying and politicking it can get if a worst-case scenario goes down.

So it probably didn't help matters that Phillips struggled on air making his case on live television, to the point where he confused FSU with rival Miami and couldn't come up with the name of SMU's starting quarterback at first mention.

It could be all for naught, though, if SMU comes through. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. ET.

Report: Bill Belichick Had 2nd Meeting with UNC About HC Opening amid CFB Rumors

Bill Belichick's rumored candidacy as Mack Brown's potential replacement in Chapel Hill is continuing to generate buzz.

The former New England Patriots head coach reportedly interviewed for the North Carolina football head coaching position, and Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reported that Belichick met with UNC again on Thursday.

"But furthering the intrigue around Belichick and the Carolina job, representatives from the university again met with Belichick on Thursday in Manhattan, according to multiple sources," Jones wrote.

The 2024 NFL season is the first one since 1999 that Belichick was not the Patriots head coach. He has been involved with NFL coaching since 1975.

His time with the Patriots was wildly successful as he won six Super Bowls and led the team to an overall record of 266-121. He's 14 wins shy of tying Don Shula's all-time mark.

Ever since the 2024 coaching cycle came and went, it's been clear Belichick would be one of the key pieces of the 2025 carousel given his proximity to Shula on the all-time wins list.

As a result, a detour to college has never seemed like his most likely route.

North Carolina went 6-6 in 2024 and fired Brown, who has been a legend in the collegiate ranks himself.

At this point, though, it remains unclear if Belichick is truly intent on testing his mettle in the collegiate ranks and succeeding Brown or if he's simply doing his due diligence before more NFL jobs open up next month.

NFL Rumors: Bill Belichick Has 'Done a Lot of Research' on CFB Coaching amid UNC Buzz

On Thursday, North Carolina reportedly interviewed Bill Belichick for its head-coaching vacancy after firing Mack Brown, per Grant Hughes of 247Sports.

Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network confirmed that report, with Rapoport noting that Belichick is "not ruling out college" despite his successful NFL coaching career. Per that report, the college game is something Belichick is "fairly serious" about and he's done "a lot of research, has talked to a lot of people in college football, a lot of his friends, about what college football is like."

In September, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that Belichick "would like to return to coaching in 2025, but only in the right situations with good jobs," adding that he had offers ahead of the 2024 season to serve as the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams but turned them down.

He also interviewed for the Atlanta Falcons head-coaching position last offseason before the Falcons hired Raheem Morris.

Pelissero noted Thursday that "when you look at the landscape of the jobs that are available right now across the NFL, I would fairly tell you that if [Belichick] is going to be coaching somewhere in the league in 2025, it's a job that is not yet open."

Thus far this season, the New York Jets fired Robert Saleh, the New Orleans Saints fired Dennis Allen and the Chicago Bears fired Matt Eberflus. Other openings will inevitably come open, with head coaches like Doug Pederson in Jacksonville, Mike McCarthy in Dallas, Brian Daboll in New York and Antonio Pierce in Las Vegas, among others, on the hot seat.

As for North Carolina, hiring Belichick would be about the most high-profile move the Tar Heels could make, though there remain plenty of questions about how Belichick would fare in the college game from a recruiting and developmental standpoint.

There's no doubting Belichick's pedigree from a football knowledge and tactical standpoint. But dealing with far younger players, the realities of the NIL age and the greater talent disparities in the college game are entirely different beasts. Is that a world the 72-year-old Belichick wants to learn for the first time?

Perhaps. But it still feels more likely that if the right NFL opportunity comes along, it would ultimately be his preference.
