Syracuse HC Says Scrimmage with Deion Sanders' Colorado 'Would've Saved the Game'

Paul Kasabian
Apr 2, 2025
Syracuse v Washington State - DirecTV Holiday Bowl

The NCAA's Football Bowl Subdivision oversight committee rejected a waiver from Syracuse and Colorado to hold joint practices and a spring scrimmage.

On Wednesday, Syracuse head coach Fran Brown spoke about the matter with Andrew Sicilano, who was filling in on The Rich Eisen Show.

Brown clearly feels strongly about that spring game, to the point where he felt it would have "saved" the game of football (36-second mark).

"Yeah, I thought it makes sense on a lot of levels right, just for saving the game of football, just for right after this March Madness is done, like what are we doing right during that time? You can have something else to lead up into that or to get you going right for March Madness…" Brown said in part.

He then later added: "I just feel as though it would have saved the game. Just imagine Syracuse historically who this program is and Colorado getting to go against each other and getting to go out and then being able to compete against each other. I mean I just think the market, the money that we would have been able to make, just both schools, what you can do. Everyone's always complaining about NIL and the different pieces, maybe you can take this spring ball and say everything that you guys make, you're allowed to take and put into the NIL so then we don't got to worry about all the stuff like that, it helps. I just think there's a lot of things that we could do and we would have been able to help out with it."

Brown then said that players were going to do schoolwork in study halls and also take classes on financial literacy as well, a topic that the coach cares deeply about.

As noted by ESPN's Adam Rittenberg, the NCAA's Football Bowl Subdivision oversight committee opposed the waiver request last Thursday. The idea to have joint practices and scrimmages originated from Colorado head coach Deion Sanders, and Brown was eager to have his team take part.

However, the idea will not come to fruition, in 2025, at least. Rittenberg provided the reasoning.

"The FBS oversight committee cited three factors in opposing the waiver: the late timing, as most teams have planned out spring practice and, in some cases, concluded their sessions; a recruiting advantage Colorado and Syracuse would receive when other teams couldn't hold a similar scrimmage this spring; and the potential academic impact for athletes missing classes to participate in the practices and a scrimmage."

The committee did state in its report that it would talk about "a concept that could permit joint spring practices in future seasons." However, in 2025, it will not happen.

So for this season, Syracuse's spring game will still occur on April 12. Colorado's will happen on April 19.

Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord made history on Friday night.

McCord connected with sophomore wide receiver Darrell Gill Jr. on a 50-yard bomb during a matchup with Washington State in the 2024 Holiday Bowl, setting a new single-season ACC passing record.

The throw gave McCord 4,594 passing yards in 2024, breaking a conference record that was previously set by Cleveland Browns signal-caller Deshaun Watson during his 2016 campaign at Clemson.

McCord threw for 315 yards through three quarters against Washington State, giving the Orange a 42-28 lead entering the fourth.

The 22-year-old transferred to Syracuse after spending the first three years of his college career at Ohio State and immediately benefitted from the change of scenery. McCord led the nation with his 4,326 passing yards prior to the battle with the Cougars.

He's remained efficient despite also leading the country with 558 pass attempts, completing 65.8 percent of his throws while racking up 29 touchdowns compared to 12 interceptions. McCord finished at No. 10 in the 2024 Heisman Trophy voting for his efforts.

He sat at No. 5 on the ACC's single-season passing list entering Friday's contest before surpassing Brennan Armstrong, Philip Rivers, Matt Ryan and eventually Watson.

It's safe to say that McCord has been pleased with his choice to join the Orange.

"It was the best decision that I've ever made in my life," McCord said after a 31-24 win over UConn on Nov. 23, per Chris Carlson of Syracuse.com. "I think the people I've met and relationships I've created will go a lot further than wins, losses and records. I grew as a player and person more than I could have imagined."

Syracuse sits at 9-3 in its inaugural season under head coach Fran Brown and has an opportunity to reach 10 wins for the first time since 2018.

As for McCord, he etched his name in the history books on Friday.

Syracuse's Fran Brown to Clemson's Dabo Swinney: 'I Got You In' to ACC Title Game

Syracuse head coach Fran Brown gave a shoutout to Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney after No. 6 Miami suffered a 42-38 upset loss to the Orange on Saturday.

"Hey Dabo Swinney, congrats," Brown said after the win. "I got you in baby."

The 12th-ranked Tigers needed the Hurricanes to lose in order to secure a spot in the ACC Championship Game and face No. 9 SMU. With Syracuse's win, Clemson advanced to the conference title game while Miami was left out.

The Tigers nearly missed the ACC title clash after suffering their own disheartening loss on Saturday, falling to No. 15 South Carolina by the score of 17-14. Instead, Clemson now has an opportunity to earn its ninth conference championship under Swinney.

Syracuse's defeat of Miami was far from easy, facing a 21-0 deficit in the first half. The Orange gained some momentum heading into halftime by scoring two consecutive touchdowns before trying the game in the third quarter.

It didn't take much longer for Brown's team to finally pull ahead, capitalizing on a fumble by Hurricanes wide receiver Xavier Restrepo.

Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord entered the game as the nation's leading passer and continued to excel against a porous Miami secondary. McCord finished 26-of-36 for 380 yards and three touchdowns without getting picked off.

Brown was named head coach of the Orange ahead of the 2024 season after previously serving as the defensive backs coach at Georgia. He's exceeded expectations in his inaugural year with the team, as Syracuse reached nine wins for just the second time in 20 years and the first time since 2018.

With Miami's College Football Playoff hopes resting on the shoulders of the selection committee, Clemson and SMU are now set to face off with the ACC title on the line.

The conference championship clash will be on Dec. 7 at 8 p.m. ET.

Syracuse HC Fran Brown Says He Doesn't Shower After Losses: 'I Don't Deserve Soap'

Syracuse University head football coach Fran Brown divulged that he has a unique punishment for himself after losses.

While speaking to reporters, Brown said he doesn't shower after the Orange lose because he doesn't "deserve soap."

Brown went on to say that he does brush his teeth after losses so the media doesn't think his breath stinks, but he added, "You gotta earn the right to do certain things. Winners get washed."

Luckily for Brown, he has been able to shower more often than not this season, as his Orange are 6-3 and are already bowl-eligible with three games remaining on their regular-season slate.

Brown also has he Orange just one victory away from bettering the 6-7 mark they posted last season, which was Dino Babers' final campaign as the Syracuse head coach.

Before landing the head coaching job at Syracuse, Brown worked at several different schools and in several different positions collegiately.

He spent six seasons at Temple in various roles, including co-defensive coordinator, along with being the assistant head coach at Baylor and the defensive backs coach at both Rutgers and Georgia.

Brown did plenty of winning during his two-year stint at Georgia in particular, as the Bulldogs went 28-1 and won a national championship over that stretch.

Syracuse got off to a 5-1 start this season thanks largely to the play of Ohio State transfer quarterback Kyle McCord, who threw 19 touchdown passes and six interceptions in those first six games.

However, in three games since then, the Orange are 1-2, and McCord has thrown four touchdown passes compared to six picks, including five interceptions in a 41-13 loss to Pittsburgh.

While things have gone south recently, Syracuse can potentially get back on track the next two weeks with winnable games against 5-4 California and 7-3 UConn before a showdown with 9-1 Miami on Nov. 30.

With three conference losses, Syracuse is almost certainly out of the running to vie for an ACC title or a College Football Playoff berth, but if they win out, they would win 10 games in a season for the first time since 2018.

Making that happen is easier said than done, but it would be the best possible result for Brown's hygiene.

Syracuse's Kyle McCord Throws 5 INTs as CFB Fans Criticize QB in Blowout Loss to Pitt

Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord threw four first-half interceptions (including three returned for touchdowns) on Thursday evening at No. 19 Pittsburgh.

The Ohio State transfer enjoyed a phenomenal six-game start this season, completing 65.6 of his passes for 2,160 yards and 19 touchdowns (six picks) en route to guiding Syracuse to a 5-1 record.

But the first half was nothing short of a nightmare, and McCord went on to finish the game 35-of-64 for 321 yards and five interceptions.

Syracuse first got the ball after forcing a three-and-out. However, McCord soon threw an interception to Rasheem Biles, who returned the ball 35 yards for the game-opening score.

Syracuse then found itself in quicksand as McCord threw another pick after an incredible interception from Brandon George, who caught a deflected ball while he was lying on his stomach.

The Orange defense held strong, only allowing 13 Pitt yards before Ben Sauls' successful 49-yard field goal.

But then disaster struck again. Syracuse drove to midfield, but McCord chucked an interception to Kyle Louis, who returned it 59 yards for a touchdown.

With that, Syracuse was down 17-0 after one quarter despite Pitt having just negative-three passing yards at this point.

The Orange got going on their next drive but turned the ball over on downs. Then the Pitt offense, which didn't need to do much of anything all game, drove 65 yards in seven plays, scoring a touchdown on a Eli Holstein 20-yard pass complete to Censere Lee.

The two teams then traded a pair of punts before Syracuse got the ball back. Then Braylan Lovelace joined the pick-six party, returning a McCord pass 33 yards for a touchdown and a 31-0 lead following the PAT.

The first half soon mercifully ended for Syracuse. Fans and analysts alike provided commentary after the performance.

Credit, of course, goes to a tremendous Pitt defensive effort as well. But McCord and the Orange certainly hope for better days beginning with a return home to face Virginia Tech on Nov. 2.

Kyle McCord thrived during Syracuse's clash with No. 25 UNLV on Friday night.

McCord went 40-of-63 for 355 yards, three touchdowns and an interception to help lead the Orange to a 44-41 win over the Rebels in overtime. He completed his first 10 passes of the game and added 22 rushing yards. His six-yard touchdown pass to Jackson Meeks with 23 seconds left in regulation forced the extra period.

After heading into the contest with an average of 364.8 passing yards per game, the highest mark in the country, McCord continued to rack up yards through the air against a Rebels team that entered the matchup with a 4-0 record.

Junior LeQuint Allen led the Syracuse rushing attack with 19 carries for 71 yards and two touchdowns, including the game-winning score in overtime. He added nine catches for 58 yards and two more scores. Freshman Yasin Willis also provided a spark on the ground, picking up 62 yards and a touchdown on just eight attempts.

Fans were impressed with the performance of McCord as well as the rest of Syracuse's offense.

Hajj-Malik Williams started his second consecutive game at quarterback for the Rebels following Matthew Sluka's exit amid an NIL dispute. He completed 84 percent of his throws for 227 yards, throwing three touchdowns and an interception while adding 53 rushing yards and a score in the loss.

Marvin Harrison Jr. Trolls Former OSU Teammate Kyle McCord After Syracuse QB's TD Run

Marvin Harrison Jr. had jokes for his former teammate on Friday.

After Syracuse quarterback Kyle McCord, formerly Ohio State's starting quarterback, recorded a 19-yard touchdown run against Stanford, Harrison took to social media to let McCord know that he was impressed while dishing out a backhanded compliment.

"That was the most athletic thing I've ever seen you do," Harrison said in the post directed towards McCord.

It's no secret McCord isn't known for his rushing ability. The senior player has -68 rushing yards across his four-year career, going backward more often than he goes forward. He showed some flashes of his running ability on Friday though, so maybe he's unlocked a new part of his game.

What McCord lacks in speed, he makes up for with his passing ability. He had 3,170 passing yards and 24 touchdowns in his first season as the Buckeyes starter a season ago, and Harrison was the recipient of many of his passes.

Harrison had 1,211 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns a season ago, winning the Biletnikoff Award and being named a Heisman Trophy finalist. Now Harrison is looking to find similar success in the professional ranks, and he's off to a good start with the Arizona Cardinals after recording 130 receiving yards and a pair of touchdowns in Week 2.

McCord is finding success so far in his senior year, collecting 735 passing yards and eight touchdowns through three games, and he'll be looking to join Harrison in the NFL next year.

POSITIVES

— Excellent size and length for a cornerback. Has long arms and filled-out frame.

— Powerful tackler. Puts entire weight into hits with a purpose, causing big collisions.

— Physical taking on blocks to make plays on ball-carriers in space or at line of scrimmage.

NEGATIVES

— Has trouble with pad level and transitioning. Can be slow out of his break, especially from backpedal.

— Lacks ideal top-end speed and gives up long shots by crossing his feet, causing half- or full-step advantage for WR.

— Lacks recovery speed. Occasionally falls for double-moves/stop or comeback routes from head fakes, causing overruns in coverage downfield.

2023 STATISTICS

— 12 G, 57 TOT, 1 TFL, 6 PD, 1 INT, 1 FF

OVERALL

Isaiah Johnson is a lengthy cornerback who transferred from Dartmouth to Syracuse in 2021. He became a team captain at Syracuse and started every game of the 2023 season.

Johnson does a great job of using his length, especially in the run game. He uses his length and physicality to take on blocks and quickly disengage. He fights off contact with a strong base and strikes at blockers' chest on contact, bringing power behind strikes to free up the ability to make a play. When tackling, he's able to play in the box, where he fills running lanes and cuts down ball-carriers with physical hits.

Johnson may lack ideal top-end speed in coverage, but he does a great job when playing in zone, especially Cover 2. He plays the ball well when he's in phase with receivers, getting his hand in the catch point and disrupting passes.

In man coverage, Johnson often shows good patience at line of scrimmage. He has the lateral quickness to mirror as a defender and maintains hip-to-hip coverage across the route tree, especially on deep throws and intermediate routes.

Ultimately, Johnson has the ideal size for an NFL cornerback. He's a powerful tackler with the ability to play press or off-man coverage. Switching to safety might benefit his chances of making an NFL roster due to his subpar play speed.

Syracuse is turning to a national champion as the next leader of its football team.

On Tuesday, Syracuse announced it hired Georgia defensive backs coach Fran Brown as its next head coach. Brown helped lead the Bulldogs to the College Football Playoff national championship last season.

The position was available because the Orange fired Dino Babers earlier this month.

The first thing that stands out about Brown is his recruiting ability.

In fact, 247Sports ranks him as the top recruiter among all coaches for the 2024 class thanks to the six commits he helped convince to join the Bulldogs. That group includes 5-star cornerback Ellis Robinson IV and 5-star linebacker Justin Williams.

Brown even highlighted how excited he is to start recruiting in Tuesday's announcement.

"I am incredibly proud to be leading Syracuse Football at a university with a rich and storied tradition of academic and athletic excellence," he said.

"Syracuse Football has outstanding talent, great facilities and passionate alumni. The success of the players is my No. 1 priority—on and off the field. I want my guys to succeed in life, because they played football at Syracuse. My immediate area of focus is building relationships with my current players and putting together an elite staff, while also having fun on the recruiting trail. I'm ready to get to work and look forward to building something special for our fans."

Prior to his coaching career, Brown played collegiately at Western Carolina before spending two seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals at the NFL level.

His coaching resume includes stops as the co-defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach at Temple, the assistant head coach/defensive backs coach at Baylor, and the defensive backs coach at Rutgers.

He then joined the Bulldogs ahead of the 2022 campaign and helped lead them to the title. They are once again on the short list of championship contenders this season and will put their No. 1 ranking on the line when they face Alabama in the SEC Championship Game on Saturday.

While Syracuse likely won't reach the level of Georgia, which is one of the nation's premier programs, Brown's resume and championship experience is reason for optimism for a program looking for one.

The Orange have won double-digit games just twice in the last 31 years and have hovered around .500 of late. They finished the 2023 regular season with a 6-6 record after going 7-6 last season and 5-7 in 2021.

Babers was just 41-55 during his eight seasons with the program, although Syracuse did go 10-3 in 2018.
