Blame The Rock for John Cena's Trainwreck WWE WrestleMania 41 Win vs. Cody Rhodes

Chris Roling
Apr 20, 2025
WrestleMania 41

WWE got the result right in the main event of WrestleMania 41 by having a heel John Cena beat Cody Rhodes for the promotion's top title.

Unfortunately, everything else around the match was historically bad.

And frankly? Point the finger right at The Rock.

The fact that the match between Cena and Rhodes was so-so wasn't all that shocking, considering the part-time status of one of the combatants. But all could have been forgiven if it didn't devolve into a trainwreck that put Travis Scott of all people in a deciding role.

Once Scott’s music hit and it was apparent it wasn't going to blend into The Rock's music, signaling the musician would be going out on his lonesome, one could feel the air being sucked out of Allegiant Stadium.

Scott was blatantly a stand-in for Rock, from interfering with the referee to getting physical with Rhodes to straight-up swinging the result of the match.

It absolutely boggles the mind that The Final Boss couldn't be bothered to show up for a 10-minute spot or less and take one bump, just one year removed from outright competing at 'Mania in a main event.

Point blank, if Rock was a last-minute audible and couldn't attend, rather than Scott, WWE could have thrown out Solo Sikoa or somebody in the Bloodline's orbit to produce a much more satisfying scenario.

Ad Placeholder

It could have at least boosted the heel status of whoever played Scott's role. Fans know Triple H is better than this, too.

Ad Placeholder

Instead? It feels like WWE tried to get way too meta after whispers about Scott injuring Rhodes' eye the last time they encountered each other. It feels like WWE wanted to lean into that and its budding bro-sphere of celebrity influence now that it's on Netflix streaming.

Ad Placeholder

Consider the story now. As it stands, Cena sold his soul to The Rock so he could…get a rapper's help in the main event of WrestleMania? There's something worth exploring in a fading legend knowing he can't keep up with the top guys anymore. But one would think Cena would seek out, say, help from professional wrestlers who wouldn't mind aligning with him, not an entertainer.

Ad Placeholder

Which is a shame, because Cena's historic win, after decades of fan requests for his heel turn, deserved better. It's a shame because Rhodes ended up looking like an absolute dork for the umpteenth time, refusing to use a weapon handed to him by the opposition, not long after viewers saw him going wild with weapons in fights with Kevin Owens and others.

And it's made all the stinkier by the frankly horrific build to this 'Mania across the board. Worst of all was a year-plus rumbling from segments of the fanbase that The Rock had some masterplan in place. Remember him showing up to a mid-level PLE Bad Blood and patting his goosebumps and holding up a few fingers?

Just call it down the middle, too—one doesn't need to zoom in to see Rock's fingerprints all over the place. Not all that long ago, he was showing up to take Rhodes' Royal Rumble win and main-event 'Mania, only to backtrack, force an awkward tag match at The Show of Shows and then claim it was all part of the plan and/or a response to fan feedback.

Wrestling fans remember. There's no covering for the silliness now in this blurred-lines era. The headlines of Scott's involvement will fade and so will the once-a-year viewers. What WWE will be left with is a fanbase rolling its eyes if it tries to play this off as just one piece of a bigger plan.

If this was all part of the "plan" to make fans dislike Cena and outright hate the board member Dwayne Johnson, it straight-up tanked a main event of WrestleMania in the process.

So, maybe this was intended from the start. But it's such a downgrade from the line-blurring, meta and quality long-form storytelling of the Bloodline saga with Roman Reigns for years that it almost feels like some lesser promoter is putting this story out right now.

If there's any saving grace, it's that Cena's run from here should be fun. There will be encounters with the likes of Randy Orton and CM Punk before he drops the title at a SummerSlam, or perhaps even next year's WrestleMania to atone for this one.

However, the fact that we should get together and collectively agree to pretend the whole Rock and Scott involvement thing never happened is a pretty bad sign. Sunday night was a historic dud and a continuation of misguided booking, with one culprit in the decision-making process creating chaos once more.

Rejoice, though, wrestling fans. If this is how WWE wants to blend its top scene with Netflix-celebrity stuff and involve (or not) The Rock from here, the likes of Seth Rollins, Reigns and Paul Heyman are elsewhere putting on weekend-stealing and all-time matches and stories.

Ric Flair Congratulates John Cena After Superstar Breaks Record with 17th WWE Title

WrestleMania 41

John Cena is going out in style.

The longtime wrestling superstar won the WWE Undisputed championship at Wrestlemania on Sunday night, defeating Cody Rhodes and continuing a farewell tour that will conclude with his retirement at the end of the year.

It was Cena's 17th WWE championship belt, a new record that surpassed Ric Flair. And the legend himself was quick to congratulate Cena on the accomplishment:

Before Sunday, Cena hadn't been a WWE champion since 2017, largely operating as a part-time performer while he also advanced his acting career.

Stone Cold Appears at WrestleMania 41, Announces 125K 2-Day Attendance in Viral Video

"Stone Cold" Steve Austin made an appearance at WrestleMania 41 in Las Vegas on Sunday evening.

Austin's theme music sent the Allegiant Stadium crowd into a frenzy. He then appeared on a four-wheeler, riding to the ring before driving around the squared circle and halting the ATV into a stop after running into a ringside barricade.

Stone Cold then got on the mic, hyped up the crowd and announced the attendance of 63,226 for Sunday and 124,693 total for the sold-out two-day event. He also pretended to count the crowd to chants of "What?" before later enjoying himself by drinking beer, as he likes to do in front of adoring fans.

Stone Cold is an all-time pro wrestling legend, an anti-hero who served as one of the dominant figures of the Attitude Era. The 60-year-old is a six-time world champion who was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2009.

Austin hasn't wrestled full time since 2003, but he did make a one-time appearance at WrestleMania 38, when he defeated Kevin Owens.

Understandably, Austin is retired at this stage, and he said as much in an interview with Pat McAfee on Friday.

His time in the ring may be over, but Austin is still capable of firing up a crowd any time that glass breaks.

Randy Orton Beats TNA's Joe Hendry at WWE WrestleMania 41 in His 20th Match at PPV

Randy Orton's 20th appearance at WrestleMania was a successful one, as he defeated TNA's Joe Hendry after issuing an open challenge.

The TNA world champion made his shocking WrestleMania debut on Sunday night, stepping up to challenge Orton—and he was met with a thunderous pop from the Las Vegas crowd.

Despite the electric debut, the match was short-lived. As Hendry celebrated a bit too early with a pose to the camera, Orton struck with an RKO out of nowhere, securing the pinfall victory and reminding everyone why he's a 14-time world champion.

Orton was originally scheduled to wrestle Kevin Owens on The Grandest Stage of Them All. The Viper returned to television at Elimination Chamber after a four-month absence to help Sami Zayn after KO defeated him in an unsanctioned match.

Owens announced on the April 4 episode of SmackDown that he would be unable to compete at The Show of Shows due to a neck injury that required surgery.

On the go-home episode of SmackDown, Orton said he would still be competing at WrestleMania by issuing an open challenge to anyone willing to accept.

There had been rumblings in recent weeks about several stars either returning to or debuting in WWE very soon, so the open challenge got fans talking.

However, WWE pulled off a surprise masterclass by keeping Hendry's 'Mania debut under wraps, fueling speculation among fans that a full-time move to the main roster might be on the horizon. Hendry also appeared at the Royal Rumble but did not last long in the event.

This marked The Apex Predator's first victory at WrestleMania since 2022, when he and Matt Riddle defeated The Street Profits and Alpha Academy to retain the Raw tag team titles.

Orton is now the third superstar in WWE history with at least 20 matches at WrestleMania. The Undertaker leads the list with 27, followed by Triple H at 23.

John Cena Beats Cody Rhodes to Win Historic 17th WWE World Title at WrestleMania 41

WrestleMania 41

John Cena made history in the main event of Night 2 of WrestleMania 41 on Sunday night, beating Cody Rhodes to win the Undisputed WWE Championship and become a record-breaking, 17-time world champion.

Cena was toying with his food to start the match, taking his time to avoid any counters while dishing out maximum punishment to Rhodes. Just when it looked like The American Nightmare might mount a comeback, Cena gouged his eye and nearly secured the pin.

Rhodes looked nearly lifeless until he returned the favor with an eye poke of his own and finally began to show some fight.

Ad Placeholder

He somehow survived three Attitude Adjustments and broke free from several STFU attempts, before landing a Cross Rhodes to hold Cena down for what would have been a three-count—if the official hadn't been knocked out moments earlier.

The interruption came from rapper Travis Scott, who sauntered to the ring and embraced Cena—only to save him moments later by dragging the referee out of the ring during another near-fall.

Rhodes challenged Scott to step inside the ropes, then dropped him with a Cross Rhodes and sent him out of the ring.

As The American Nightmare turned around, though, Cena was waiting and looked ready to hit him with the championship belt.

Rhodes was able to remove the belt from the veteran's grasp but could not find the heel within himself to strike his opponent with it. Cena instead struck with a low blow and then the belt to claim a record-breaking 17th world title.

Last month, Cena won the men's Elimination Chamber match to earn a title opportunity against Rhodes on The Grandest Stage of Them All, but it was what occurred afterward that commenced a heated and personal rivalry.

Prior to Elimination Chamber, The Rock made his return to WWE programming and presented Rhodes with a proposal. The Final Boss told him that he wanted his soul and wanted him to be his champion.

The Rock gave Rhodes until Elimination Chamber to decide, and that segment closed the night after Cena's big Chamber match win.

With Cena and Scott looking on, The American Nightmare emphatically turned The Rock down, sending the crowd into a frenzy.

Cena celebrated as well and even embraced Rhodes in a hug, but it was all a setup for one of the biggest, most unexpected and most impactful heel turns of all time.

At the direction of The Rock, Cena dropped Rhodes with a low blow and then launched a vicious attack against his former friend. Cena wrapped a Rolex around his knuckles and punched Rhodes in the face and then hit him in the head with a microphone.

Cena and Scott held Rhodes down so The Rock could whip him in the back with a weight belt that had the words "Cody's soul" emblazoned on it.

After being a beloved fan favorite for more than 20 years, Cena sold out for a chance to win his 17th world title, and that seemed to light a fire under Rhodes during the build toward WrestleMania 41.

However, Cena arguably had the advantage going into the match since he had The Rock and his very real power and influence on his side.

The decision to turn his back on his fans ultimately worked in Cena's favor, as he defeated Rhodes and broke a tie with Ric Flair for the most world title reigns in major pro wrestling history.

Becky Lynch, Lyra Beat Liv Morgan and Raquel to Win WWE Tag Titles at WrestleMania 41

Women's intercontinental champion Lyra Valkyria and surprise teammate Becky Lynch defeated Liv Morgan and Raquel Rodriguez on Night 2 of WrestleMania 41 on Sunday to win the WWE Women's Tag Team Championships.

After Valkyria's original teammate Bayley was sidelined from WrestleMania with an injury, a surprise partner was revealed—none other than The Man.

Lynch's music hit to the loudest pop of the night from the Las Vegas crowd as she returned to action for the first time since June 2024.

While Rodriguez and Valkyria battled outside the ring, Lynch capitalized in her return, hitting Morgan with a Manhandle Slam to secure the pinfall.

Valkyria now mirrors what Lynch once was during her iconic "Becky 2 Belts" era—earning the nickname "Lyra 2 Belts" as she now holds both the women's intercontinental and WWE tag team titles.

Morgan and Rodriguez beat Bianca Belair and Naomi for the titles in February, but both Superstars have continued their singles pursuits as well, including Rodriguez challenging Valkyria for the women's IC title last month.

The Valkyrie caught Raquel in a pinning combination to retain the title, and the plans of Morgan and Rodriguez to attack her after the match were foiled when Bayley came to her aid.

With Bayley and Valkyria striking up an alliance, they were announced as part of the tag team gauntlet match on the April 11 episode of SmackDown to determine Liv and Raquel's opponents for WrestleMania.

Before that, Bayley received a shot at Lyra's Women's Intercontinental Championship on the April 7 Raw. Valkyria was victorious in an exciting, back-and-forth match, and while The Role Model initially turned down a handshake from Lyra, she changed her mind and ended up hugging her.

Ad Placeholder

In the gauntlet match on SmackDown, Bayley and Valkyria were the first team to enter, meaning they would have to beat five other tandems in order to become No. 1 contenders.

Bayley and Valkyria did precisely that, taking down the teams of Shayna Baszler and Zoey Stark, Kayden Carter and Katana Chance, Natalya and Maxxine Dupri, Michin and B-Fab, and Piper Niven and Alba Fyre.

After their win, Valkyria and Bayley were confronted in the ring by Morgan and Rodriguez, making a WWE Women's Tag Team Championship match at WrestleMania official.

While Lynch and Valkyria have both enjoyed plenty of success in the singles ranks, they were at a significant disadvantage on The Grandest Stage of Them All in terms of their experience as a team.

Despite that, they got the better of Morgan and Rodriguez at WrestleMania, resulting in Valkyria winning her first tag title and Lynch becoming a two-time women's tag team champ.

Iyo Sky Beats Rhea Ripley, Bianca to Retain WWE Women's World Title at WrestleMania 41

Monday Night RAW

Iyo Sky beat Rhea Ripley and Bianca Belair in a Triple Threat match on Night 2 of WrestleMania 41 on Sunday to retain the Women's World Championship.

Sky, Ripley and Belair kicked off Night 2 with a bang, delivering high-flying chaos and nonstop action.

Belair countered Ripley's Riptide with a whip of her signature braid before landing a K.O.D. that looked like it would seal the match.

But just as the count began, Sky came soaring off the ropes with a perfectly timed Over the Moonsault, breaking up the pin and flipping the momentum and pinning Belair for the win.

Ad Placeholder

The road to the star-studded women's world title match began at Elimination Chamber on March 1 when Belair outlasted five other Superstars to earn a championship match at WrestleMania.

While The EST of WWE knew she would vie for a title on The Grandest Stage of Them All, she did not initially know who her opponent would be.

On the post-Elimination Chamber episode of Raw, Ripley put the Women's World Championship on the line against Sky. Belair was ringside to scout her competition, but the Australian was so distracted by her presence that she ended up dropping the title to The Genius of the Sky.

Ad Placeholder

That seemingly meant Sky would defend the title against Belair in a singles match at WrestleMania, but Ripley crashed the contract signing.

The segment devolved into chaos with all three women attacking each other. Mami took advantage by signing her name on the contract and leaving with it.

Raw general manager Adam Pearce snatched the contract away from Ripley backstage and said she couldn't insert herself into the 'Mania bout, although he agreed to give her a rematch against Sky on the March 31 edition of Raw.

Ad Placeholder

To make things even more interesting, Pearce said Belair would serve as special guest referee in an effort to prevent things from getting out of hand.

Not surprisingly, that plan backfired, as The EST's involvement turned the match into a powder keg of mayhem and emotion, ending in a no-contest.

Given the controversial ending to the bout, Pearce ultimately made the decision to turn the WrestleMania match into a Triple Threat.

Sky, Belair and Ripley are three of the best performers and biggest stars WWE has to offer, and while a strong case could have been made for any of them to come out on top, it was Sky who prevailed and retained the women's title in the process.
