Real Madrid's Champions League Elimination Stuns WF Fans as Arsenal Reaches Semis

Real Madrid C.F. v Arsenal FC - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 Quarter Final Second Leg

Real Madrid is mortal in Europe after all.

The Spanish giant saw its UEFA Champions League title defense come to an end Wednesday night at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium. Arsenal won 2-1 to advance by a 5-1 aggregate score.

It's the first time since the 2019-20 season Madrid failed to reach the UCL semifinals.

Madridistas might've thought the stars were starting to align after referee François Letexier awarded a contentious penalty to Arsenal in the 11th minute. Another tally for the Gunners surely would've removed any doubt about the final result. Instead, Thibaut Courtois saved Bukayo Saka effort from the spot.

Then a lifeline seemingly arrived in the form of a penalty to Madrid for a foul on Kylian Mbappé. Following a lengthy review, however, the French star was deemed to be offside.

The final decision came down in the 27th minute, so there was still plenty of time for Real Madrid to make things interesting. The air kind of went out of the Bernabéu when the penalty was wiped out, though.

Through the years, Real Madrid has consistently risen to the occasion in the Champions League. Regardless of how it was performing domestically or how disjointed it looked on the pitch, the legendary club always found a way.

The luck ran out Wednesday as Madrid couldn't overcome what have been some glaring deficiencies this season.

With Real Madrid now out of the Champions League, the fate of manager Carlo Ancelotti may rest squarely on where it finishes in La Liga. Los Blancos trail bitter rivals Barcelona by four points with seven matches to play.

Should they come up short, that could be the final nail in Ancelotti's coffin because past success matters little in the eyes of president Florentino Pérez.

Even if Real Madrid go on to lift another league title, going out in the UCL quarters means this season is likely to be viewed as a disappointment in the Spanish capital.

PSG Doubted by Fans After Holding off Aston Villa's Rally in UCL Quarter-Final

Aston Villa FC v Paris Saint-Germain - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 Quarter Final Second Leg

Paris Saint-Germain survived after nearly throwing away a four-goal lead in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Champions League.

PSG lost 3-2 to Aston Villa in the second leg at Villa Park but prevailed 5-4 on aggregate.

Twenty-seven minutes into Tuesday's contest, it looked like the Ligue 1 champion was in the clear. Right back Achraf Hakimi scored the first goal of the night, and left back Nuno Mendes made it 5-1 on aggregate to the Parisians.

Aston Villa midfielder Youri Tielemans provided the home side with a lifeline, but there were probably few supporters inside the ground at halftime who thought Paris Saint-Germain was in serious danger.

A little over 10 minutes into the second half, it was a much different story.

Captain John McGinn trimmed the aggregate deficit to two goals in the 55th minute, and Ezri Konsa followed in short order to bring Villa to within one.

And PSG was a pair of sprawling saves by Gianluigi Donnarumma away from watching Aston Villa equalize.

Prior to Tuesday night, Paris Saint-Germain was increasingly becoming one of the strongest contenders left. Opinions might be shifting a bit based on some of the reaction on social media:

To put a slightly positive spin on PSG's near-capitulation, a previous iteration of the squad might have collapsed completely. Once the initial flurry from Villa after Konsa's goal subsided, the match slowly petered out.

Paris Saint-Germain might also benefit from having a close brush with its own mortality. It certainly looks as though the team went into cruise control early into the second half.

When every domestic fixture is basically a dead rubber from here on out, keeping the players focused and engaged isn't always easy. PSG will know it can't afford another loss of concentration when the Champions League resumes in the next round.

Lionel Messi Wants to Play in 2026 World Cup, Inter Miami's Luis Suarez Says

SOCCER: APR 13 MLS Chicago Fire FC vs Inter Miami CF

Argentina star Lionel Messi hasn't closed the door on competing in the 2026 World Cup, according to Inter Miami teammate Luis Suárez.

"No, we do talk [about it]. Jokingly, many times, but he [Messi] also has that desire to play in next year's World Cup," Suárez said to Spanish newspaper El País (via ESPN's Adriana Garcia). "Obviously, after being away from the national team for a while, that desire is fading more on my side than on his, but we haven't talked about it [retirement] yet."

Most fans will have expected the 2022 World Cup to be Messi's swan song in the quadrennial tournament. In addition to the fact he'll turn 39 midway through the 2026 installment, he surely can't top what unfolded in Qatar more than two years ago.

Argentina was crowned the champion, while its captain had seven goals and three assists en route to receiving the Golden Ball award.

Messi said in 2023 he was operating with the mindset that "I won't go to the next World Cup."

The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner may not have have expected to perform as well as he has in MLS, though. He has 24 goals and 15 assists in 30 league appearances for Inter Miami, and he was the MLS MVP in 2024.

Messi has been just as prolific with Argentina during the World Cup qualifying process. La Albiceleste have already secured a berth in the tournament, and their legendary forward has six goals through nine of their 14 qualifying fixtures.

On his current form, it's easy to see why Messi might think he can hang around for the 2026 World Cup.

Lionel Messi, MLS' Inter Miami Reportedly In 'Advanced' Talks on Contract Extension

Mike Chiari

MLS: APR 09 Los Angeles at Inter Miami

Lionel Messi and MLS club Inter Miami are reportedly progressing toward a contract extension.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, talks between the two sides have advanced and they are close to an agreement, which is expected to be finalized soon.

The 37-year-old star, who initially joined Inter Miami in July 2023, would have become a free agent at the end of 2025 in the absence of a new deal.

Messi is widely regarded as one of the greatest soccer players of all time, as he boasts a résumé that few can match.

He spent 18 seasons at Barcelona, winning 10 La Liga titles, seven Copa del Rey titles and four UEFA Champions League titles during his highly successful tenure.

Ad Placeholder

Messi then played at Paris Saint-Germain for two seasons before coming to the United States, winning a pair of Ligue 1 titles.

An eight-time winner of the Ballon d'Or Award, Messi is the second-leading goal scorer in major professional soccer history with 858 goals, placing him behind only Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi has even excelled for his country, leading Argentina to a FIFA World Cup win in 2022, and winning the FIFA World Cup Golden Ball in both 2014 and 2022.

Ad Placeholder

When Messi made the decision to make the leap to Inter Miami, it was a huge deal for American soccer.

Several superstars from European clubs have come to MLS during the twilight of their careers over the years, but none boast the same accomplishments and iconic status as Messi.

Aside from his name recognition, Messi continues to play at a high level as well, scoring 23 goals in 25 matches across all competitions for Miami last season.

Ad Placeholder

While Miami was upset in the first round of the 2024 MLS Cup playoffs by Atlanta United, the team set a single-season MLS record with 74 regular-season points.

So far this season, Inter Miami has the second-most points in the Eastern Conference with 14, and Messi has scored eight goals in nine matches across all competitions as well.

Retaining Messi should allow Inter Miami to remain one of the top teams and a championship contender in MLS, plus having him on the squad for the transition to a new stadium in 2026 will undoubtedly go a long way toward generating interest and selling tickets.

PSG Beats Aston Villa in UCL Leg 1, Earns Praise from Fans for Kvaratskhelia Transfer

PSG v Aston Villa - UEFA Champions League

In case you needed a reminder why Paris Saint-Germain signed Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in January, the Georgian star provided one Wednesday night in his club's 3-1 victory over Aston Villa in the UEFA Champions League.

Kvaratskhelia's goal in the 49th minute was the difference between the two clubs in the first leg of their quarterfinal tie. It was a brilliant individual effort from the Georgian, who eluded Villa defender Axel Disasi before unleashing a thunderous shot with his left foot.

When Kvaratskhelia first arrived, the general consensus was that Paris Saint-Germain didn't exactly need more attacking help, but the opportunity was too good to turn down. The 24-year-old has adapted quickly with two goals and three assists through 10 Ligue 1 appearances.

Ad Placeholder

And Wednesday's goal was an example of how Kvaratskhelia possesses world-class talent that stands out on big European nights.

PSG is generally pivoting away from blockbuster signings after an era personified by Neymar and Kylian Mbappé failed to yield a Champions League trophy. That approach is already paying off, with social media highlighting both Kvaratskhelia's impact and a more cohesive squad on the pitch.

Ad Placeholder

It wasn't a great occasion for Liverpool supporters. The Reds are no longer in the Champions League, and their fans were left to ponder what could've been after LFC was linked with Kvaratskhelia before his move to the French capital.

https://twitter.com/TheLiverpoolEra/status/1910062445328023880

All of the deserved praise for Kvaratskhelia shouldn't totally overshadow Désiré Doué's opener for PSG. The 19-year-old received the ball to the left of the 18-yard box before cutting inside and curling a shot into the top corner.

It's hard to see a way back for Aston Villa after Nuno Mendes scored a third for Paris Saint-Germain in second-half stoppage time.

Ad Placeholder

The final score was a fair reflection of the match as PSG was the far superior team and responded nicely to Morgan Rogers' goal to give Villa an early 1-0 lead.

The second leg is scheduled for April 15 at Villa Park. Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has a serious tactical challenge on his hands as he tries to balance the need to erase a two-goal deficit with how a more attacking style will leave his team more vulnerable against PSG's forward line.

Barcelona Crushes Dortmund in UCL Leg 1 as Fans Hype Lewandowski, Yamal, Raphinha

FC Barcelona v Borussia Dortmund - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 Quarter Final First Leg

Well that wasn't close.

Barcelona absolutely battered Borussia Dortmund 4-0 on Wednesday in the first leg of their Champions League quarterfinal matchup, led by Robert Lewandowski's brace and goals from Raphinha and Lamine Yamal.

By basically every metric, this was pure domination. Barca held 60.3 percent of possession, out-shot Dortmund 18-13 (10-3 on goal). About the only advantage for Dortmund came on corners (6-4). In expected goals, Barcelona held a 3.74-1.30 advantage.

Much of that came down to the attacking prowess of Lewandowski, Raphinha and Yamal, and fans and pundits alike were quick to give them their flowers:

While there is a second leg to be played in Germany next week, this matchup feels done and dusted. It would take a meltdown of epic proportions from Barcelona to even make things close, and the current La Liga leaders are in fine form at the moment.

Frankly, Wednesday's performance should have them marked as the UCL favorites going forward. There isn't a better frontline in the world at the moment, and Barca, in general, look like a dynamo under manager Hansi Flick.

Anything can happen in football, and Dortmund have plenty of talent and UCL experience. But Barcelona appear to be playing football in a different stratosphere than their German opponents at the moment, and anything less than a relatively stress-free second leg would be a major surprise.

Vincent Kompany Ripped by Fans for Bayern Munich's UCL QF 1st Leg Loss to Inter Milan

FC Bayern München v FC Internazionale Milano - UEFA Champions League 2024/25 Quarter Final First Leg

Thomas Müller's storybook ending is in serious jeopardy after Bayern Munich lost 2-1 to Inter Milan in the first leg of their quarterfinal tie.

Müller came on as a second-half substitute and equalized in the 85th minute at Allianz Arena. It was a moment that followed a Hollywood script with the Bayern legend on the way out.

But Davide Frattesi apparently didn't get the memo, as the Inter midfielder put the Serie A leader back in front in the 88th minute.

Should Bayern be unable to overturn its current deficit, there will be plenty of blame apportioned to the key figures. Manager Vincent Kompany won't be spared despite the fact his game plan on Tuesday night was clear and fairly effective:

With time ticking down in the second half, it looked like Lautaro Martínez's goal in the 38th minute would be enough for Inter. Marcus Thuram laid the ball off for Martínez, who struck it perfectly with the outside of his boot to beat goalkeeper Jonas Urbig.

Ad Placeholder

The Argentine forward isn't scoring at his usual rate domestically. After eclipsing 20-plus goals for three straight seasons, he has 11 through 28 Serie A matches in 2024-25.

It has been a different story in the Champions League, where Martínez has now scored seven times in 10 matches. Social media was quick to point out his continental form:

It was a much different story for Harry Kane. The English striker is in the midst of another prolific season with 23 Bundesliga goals and another 10 in the UCL.

Ad Placeholder

But playing for Bayern Munich means shouldering massive expectations, and Kane's miss in the 26th minute is what a lot of supporters remember if the club exits in the quarterfinals.

Inter will host the second leg at San Siro on April 16. Bayern is six points clear in first place in the Bundesliga, so a 34th league title is within reach. Kompany's first season will be judged largely by the Champions League, though, domestic success has become a given.

Losing in the quarterfinals probably won't be enough to warrant sacking him. He can be assured of starting 2025-26 with plenty of pressure, though.

Walker Zimmerman Released from Hospital After Suffering Head Injury in MLS Match

Charlotte FC v Nashville SC

Nashville SC captain Walker Zimmerman has been released from the hospital after receiving medical care for an apparent head injury suffered during Saturday night's 2-1 loss at Charlotte FC, a team spokesperson confirmed to The Athletic's Melanie Anzidei.

Zimmerman was hit in the face with a bicycle kick by Charlotte forward Kerwin Vargas while attempting to clear the ball from the box during the 72nd minute of Saturday's match.

He fitted with a neck brace and stretchered off the pitch before being briefly hospitalized.

Nashville coach BJ Callaghan said after the loss that Zimmerman was "responsive and in stable condition" at a nearby hospital, per SixOneFive Soccer's Valair Shabilla.

"Everything is being handled by the medical professionals," Callaghan said earlier Saturday, per the Nashville Tennessean's Jacob Shames. "We'll let that process take place. He's under good care."

Callaghan also said he did not know if Zimmerman lost consciousness after suffering the injury, per Shames.

Vargas received a yellow card after the collision, while Jeisson Palacios made his Nashville SC and MLS debut when he subbed in to replace Zimmerman.

Nashville SC led 1-0 when Zimmerman left the game, but ultimately lost due to Charlotte's 85th-minute penalty kick and 90th-minute game-winning goal.

Zimmerman is playing in his 13th MLS season and sixth campaign with Nashville SC. He has also made 44 career appearances for the USMNT and is a candidate to make the United States roster for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The two-time MLS Defender of the Year had played every minute of Nashville SC's first six games of the season heading into Saturday.
