Nicklas Bendtner to Serve 50 Days in Jail for Assault After Dropping Appeal

Former Arsenal forward Nicklas Bendtner will serve a 50-day prison sentence for assaulting a taxi driver after dropping his appeal against the verdict on Wednesday.
The Associated Press (via the MailOnline) reported the Rosenborg and Denmark striker accepted the sentence for the September 9 assault in Copenhagen, which was initially handed out on November 2. It is not yet known when the player will begin his sentence.
The Dane was also ordered to pay 1,500 kroner (£179) as part of the sentence.
Bendtner initially admitted to striking the man, but he said it was in self-defence as part of a dispute over a £4.80 taxi fare.
Per the Associated Press, the local state prosecutor has also announced it will not follow through on a counter-appeal against Bendtner, stating the prosecution is now finalised following confirmation of the sentence.

Per Jack Watson of the Independent, the initial court hearing revealed the 30-year-old broke the driver's jaw, and video was shown of the player kicking the victim while he was on the ground.
Speaking at a press conference three days after the assault, Bendtner said:
"I was involved in an extremely unfortunate episode. I could not imagine it would develop as it did, and of course I'm extremely sad that the outcome became as unfortunate as it did. To Rosenborg fans and audiences, I regret that this has happened. I'm sorry with all my heart that we are standing here today. To my dear teammates, I regret that this will steal focus in an important time. I thank you for your understanding. I have never been a fighter but I protect those I love on and off the pitch."
Bendtner departed Arsenal and the Premier League in 2014, signing for Bundesliga side Wolfsburg.
The player returned to England to feature for Nottingham Forest for one season in 2016 before joining Rosenborg in Norway.
Nicklas Bendtner Sentenced to 50 Days in Prison for Assault on Taxi Driver

Rosenborg forward Nicklas Bendtner has been sentenced to 50 days in jail after he was found to have assaulted a taxi driver.
News of the punishment for the former Arsenal player came from Danish newspaper B.T. (h/t the Guardian's Marcus Christenson):
According to Martin Domin of the Daily Mirror, the Denmark international has appealed the sentence.
Per Reuters, the driver needed surgery on a broken jaw following the incident.
The assault took place in the early hours of September 9 after Bendtner had been on a night out with his girlfriend. In a statement, the 30-year-old said he regretted his actions, per Domin:
"I was involved in an extremely unfortunate episode. I could not imagine it would develop as it did, and of course I'm extremely sad that the outcome became as unfortunate as it did. To Rosenborg fans and audiences, I regret that this has happened. I'm sorry with all my heart that we are standing here today.
"To my dear teammates, I regret that this will steal focus in an important time. I thank you for your understanding. I have never been a fighter but I protect those I love on and off the pitch."

Per Domin, the court was shown a video of the altercation inside the vehicle.
The Dane was on Arsenal's books for nine years between 2005 and 2014, although he had spells on loan with Birmingham City, Sunderland and Juventus during that time.
Since then he's played at Wolfsburg, where he won the DFB-Pokal in 2015, and had a short stint with Nottingham Forest before joining Rosenborg last season. The forward has been performing well for the Norwegian outfit, netting 33 goals in 75 appearances in all competitions.
Report: Nicklas Bendtner Arrested; Taxi Driver Has Broken Jaw in Altercation

Nicklas Bendtner has reportedly been arrested after an altercation left a taxi driver with a broken jaw.
According to Danish outlet Ekstra Bladet (h/t the Mirror's Martin Domin and Alex Smith), the incident took place early Sunday morning after a night out in Copenhagen on Saturday, with the former Arsenal striker charged by police as a result.
A spokesperson for the driver's company, DanTaxi, said:
"It's the name [Bendtner] that the driver has reported. The episode has taken place with the taxi company's employees.
"We are deeply shaken. This applies to everyone in the business. We have been informed internally, and of course this is something that has left us shaken."
Per Danish website bt.dk (h/t the Sun's Sam Morgan), DanTaxi's communications manager, Rasmus Krochin, described the altercation as a "serious assault" and that the driver was "on the operating table" receiving treatment for the jaw.
The 30-year-old has earned 81 caps for Denmark but missed out on a place in their FIFA World Cup squad because of injury.
Despite the Danes temporarily ending a dispute with their players that prevented them from fielding their full-strength side against Slovakia on Wednesday, he was not called up by manager Age Hareide for Sunday's clash with Wales.
After loan spells with Sunderland and Juventus, Bendtner ended his 11-year stint with Arsenal in 2014 to join Wolfsburg. He signed for Rosenborg last year following a brief switch to Nottingham Forest.
