Cooper Kupp Rumors: Rams 'More Likely Than Not' Will Release WR amid Trade Buzz

Paul Kasabian

NFC Divisional Playoffs: Los Angeles Rams v Philadelphia Eagles

The Los Angeles Rams "more likely than not" will release wide receiver Cooper Kupp, per Ian Rapoport of NFL Network (28-second mark).

"It seems to me, more likely than not, that it's headed for a release," Rapoport said in part. "Someone could trade for him. This could literally happen as I'm talking, but that's what it seems."

Kupp revealed on Feb. 3 that the Rams intended to trade him "immediately," but nothing has transpired after a month.

Rams general manager Les Snead also told reporters that Kupp staying in town was the "least likely" option.

Kupp has played his entire eight-year NFL career with the Rams.

Kupp has two years left on a three-year, $80.1 million extension. Per Over the Cap, Kupp carries a cap number of $29.8 million in 2025 and $27.3 million in 2026.

Last season was a tough one for Kupp. He opened the season with 14 catches for 110 yards and a touchdown against the Detroit Lions but suffered an ankle injury in Week 2 that kept him out for four weeks.

Kupp fared well over his next seven games, catching 45 passes for 510 yards and five touchdowns. However, over his next four games played (including the postseason), he became an afterthought in the offense, with just five catches for 82 yards and no scores.

Kupp did well in the Rams' finale, catching five passes for 61 yards in a 28-23 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Divisional Round.

However, it's clear the Rams want to move on. Kupp was once the game's top wide receiver, earning Offensive Player of the Year and Super Bowl MVP honors in 2021. Injuries have slowed him down and sidelined him since, but he can still be a reception monster on occasion, as evidenced in the Lions game.

Ultimately, it appears Kupp's great eight-year run with the Rams is coming to an end, one way or another. The next question is which team lines up to sign Kupp and for how much (and how long) if and when the Rams release him.

Tutu Atwell, Rams Agree to $10M Contract amid Cooper Kupp Trade Rumors

Los Angeles Rams v San Francisco 49ers

As the Los Angeles Rams continue to explore trade opportunities involving Cooper Kupp, they are bringing back veteran wide receiver Tutu Atwell.

Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, Atwell has agreed to a one-year deal worth $10 million fully guaranteed to stay in Los Angeles.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport added Atwell's fully guaranteed money will be paid out via a $5 million signing bonus and a $5 million base salary.

Much of the focus on the Rams receivers since the end of the season has been on Kupp. The 31-year-old, who was on the trade block during the season, announced on social media in February that the team informed him they were seeking to deal him.

Even though nothing has happened at this point, Rams general manager Les Snead told reporters on Wednesday the "least likely" scenario would have Kupp on their roster in 2025.

One of the problems in trying to trade Kupp is an acquiring team would likely have to adjust his contract. He is set to count $29.8 million against the cap in 2025 and $27.3 million in 2026.

This is among the key reasons why there's speculation the Rams could end up having to release Kupp. They would save $7.5 million against the cap as a pre-June 1 cut. That number would go up to $15 million if they used the post-June 1 designation.

The Rams are also facing the possibility of losing Demarcus Robinson in free agency.

Retaining Atwell gives head coach Sean McVay some stability at receiver behind Puka Nacua. The 25-year-old knows the offensive system, having played in it since being a second-round draft pick in 2021.

Atwell is coming off the most productive season of his career in 2024. He finished third on the team in receptions (42) and receiving yards (562).

The Rams won the NFC West last season for the first time since 2021. They defeated the Minnesota Vikings in the wild card round before losing to the eventual Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles in the divisional round.

Matthew Stafford, Wife Kelly Donate Uniforms to High School Affected by LA Wildfires

Matthew Stafford is staying in Los Angeles following offseason speculation about his future, and he is doing what he can to help the local community recover from the wildfires that burned around the city in January.

ESPN's Sarah Barshop reported Wednesday that the Los Angeles Rams quarterback and his wife, Kelly, donated new football uniforms to Pasadena High School after the program lost uniforms and equipment during the Eaton Fire.

The Staffords were in attendance at the school's football banquet on Wednesday and revealed they will donate 60 varsity team uniforms and 150 uniforms for five Pasadena Panthers youth football teams.

"It's fun to be a little bit of a part of their team now," Stafford told reporters. "Just happy to be able to do those kinds of things, and it's fun to be around a bunch of young guys that love playing the game and love playing together."

The Los Angeles wildfires forced the Rams to play their home playoff game against the Minnesota Vikings in Glendale, Arizona, in January.

After leading his team to a victory, Stafford told reporters, "We knew we weren't just playing for us. We were playing for people back home who needed something to watch and enjoy."

He provided Pasadena High School students with something else to enjoy Wednesday and will remain in Los Angeles for the 2025 season after ESPN's Adam Schefter reported he and the Rams restructured his contract. Schefter noted the move "quashes any and all trade speculation."

Stafford has played for the Rams the last four seasons and helped lead them to three playoff appearances and a Super Bowl title. The only year they missed the playoffs during his tenure was in 2022 when injuries limited him to nine games.

Les Snead: Cooper Kupp Staying with Rams 'Least Likely' Scenario amid NFL Trade Rumors

NFC Divisional Playoffs: Los Angeles Rams v Philadelphia Eagles

The Los Angeles Rams are looking to trade wide receiver Cooper Kupp, and while a return isn't out of the question, it is the "least likely" scenario, general manager Les Snead said Wednesday.

Kupp revealed on Feb. 3 that the Rams were looking to trade him "immediately."

Kupp, who turns 32 on June 15, has played his entire eight-year career in Los Angeles.

Kupp once posted one of the best individual offensive seasons in NFL history, leading the league with 145 catches, 1,947 yards and 16 touchdowns in 2021.

Not only did Kupp win Offensive Player of the Year honors, but he helped lead the Rams to a Super Bowl title against the Cincinnati Bengals. He scored the game-winning touchdown and was named Super Bowl MVP for his efforts.

Unfortunately, injuries have forced Kupp to miss 18 games over the past three seasons, and his production has suffered as a result. Last season, Kupp caught 67 passes for 710 yards and six scores in 12 games. He had a relatively quiet postseason with just six receptions for 90 yards in two contests.

Kupp has two years remaining on a three-season, $80,100,000 contract extension, per Over the Cap.

The third-round pick out of Eastern Washington was sensational in eight years with the Rams, and he'll forever be a franchise legend. But the Rams have made clear that they want to move on, even if Kupp doesn't want that to happen.

If a trade doesn't occur, then an outright release could be on the table, as Ian Rapoport of NFL Network noted.

For now, Kupp remains a Ram, but the question at this point is where his next NFL home will be, and how he gets there.

Sean McVay Open to Cooper Kupp Staying with Rams amid NFL Trade Rumors

Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay didn't completely close the door on Cooper Kupp staying with the team for the 2025 season.

McVay told reporters that "I would never speak in absolutes" when asked if a return for Kupp was completely out of the question, via Gary Klein of the Los Angeles Times.

McVay also called the team's choice to seek a trade for the veteran receiver the "hardest decision" he's made as head coach, per The Athletic's Jourdan Rodrigue.

On Feb. 3, Kupp revealed on social media that the Rams informed him they were putting him on the trade market.

"I don’t agree with the decision and always believed it was going to begin and end in LA," Kupp wrote in the post.

The former All-Pro receiver is due $20 million in 2025 and $19.85 million in 2026, via NFL Network's Mike Garafolo.

The Rams didn't approach Kupp about potentially restructuring his contract before disclosing their intention to trade him, per Rodrigue.

Ad Placeholder

The remaining years on his deal could cause opposing teams to resist pursuing a swap, but that doesn't necessarily mean he'd return to Los Angeles. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported that there's a "possibility" the Rams cut Kupp and move on if they can't find a willing trade partner.

The 31-year-old has spent all eight years of his career in Los Angeles. His tenure with the team is highlighted by his 2021 campaign in which he racked up a league-leading 1,947 receiving yards and 16 touchdowns.

Injuries have slowed down Kupp since, failing to appear in more than 12 regular-season games in each of the past three years. In 2024, he caught 67 passes for 710 yards and six scores.

While Kupp's future with the Rams is murky, McVay wasn't willing to completely rule out the veteran possibly staying with the organization for the 2025 season.

Cooper Kupp Rumors: Rams May Need to Cut WR; Contract Could Be Obstacle in Trade Talks

Cooper Kupp's salary could cause the Los Angeles Rams to cut the veteran wide receiver instead of trading him, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

"There’s going to be a market," Rapoport said on Saturday. "There’s going to be interest in the veteran playmaking receiver. The question, though, is is there enough interest to do a trade where a team will take on his full salary? If not, it certainly seems a possibility for the Rams would be cutting Cooper Kupp and then moving on.”

Kupp revealed on Feb. 3 that the Rams informed him that they were looking to trade him "immediately."

The 31-year-old spent the first eight years of his career with the team, highlighted by his 2021 campaign in which he paced the NFL in catches (145), receiving yards (1,947) and receiving touchdowns (16).

Kupp hasn't been able to maintain a similar level of production since, though. He's failed to reach 900 receiving yards in each of the past three years and has dealt with multiple health issues, appearing in 33 of a possible 51 regular-season games over that span.

Ad Placeholder

With his declining production, teams may covet him on the trade market but are likely hesitant to pay him the $20 million he's owed in 2025 as well as the $19.85 million he'll receive in 2026 (h/t NFL Network's Mike Garafolo).

Rapoport noted that there will be a trade market for Kupp, though.

The Detroit Lions, Kansas City Chiefs, New England Patriots, Pittsburgh Steelers and Washington Commanders have all been linked to the former Pro Bowl receiver.

Still, the remainder of Kupp's contract could result in the Rams cutting ties with him if they aren't able to find a trade partner willing to take on his salary.

Matthew Stafford's New Rams Contract, Aaron Rodgers' Links to Giants Stun NFL Fans

NFC Divisional Playoffs: Los Angeles Rams v Philadelphia Eagles

Matthew Stafford is reportedly staying in Los Angeles.

Adam Schefter of ESPN reported that Stafford and the Rams had reached an agreement on Friday on a restructured contract to keep the quarterback with the franchise.

Fans took to social media to celebrate the signing and praise the Rams on getting the deal done.

This development squashes any chances of Stafford heading elsewhere. This includes the New York Giants, who have shifted their attention towards Aaron Rodgers, per Dianna Russini of The Athletic.

Rodgers spent 2023 and 2024 with the New York Jets and the team announced that he will not return in 2025. Fans took to social media to express shock at the quick pivot and wondered who will be under center for the Giants in 2025.

Rodgers threw for 3,897 yards with 28 touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 2024 as the Jets went 5-12 and extended their postseason drought to 14 seasons.

While the 41-year-old isn't his former MVP self, he still would be an upgrade from the production New York got from the quarterback position in 2024 from Daniel Jones, Drew Lock and Tommy DeVito.

Whether it's Rodgers, a rookie or a different veteran signal-caller, Stafford won't be under center for the Giants and will instead hope to lead the Los Angeles Rams to another Super Bowl.

NFL: 'No Issue' With Tom Brady, Matthew Stafford Meeting; Rams Gave Raiders Permission

Super Bowl LIX: Kansas City Chiefs v Philadelphia Eagles

The NFL reportedly has no issue with Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford meeting with Las Vegas Raiders limited partner Tom Brady, per Vincent Bonsignore of the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

ESPN's Sarah Barshop previously Saturday that Stafford's agent, Jimmy Sexton, has received from the Rams to discuss his market value with other teams. However, the Rams and Stafford have also been talking about a reworked deal as well.

Peter Schrager of NFL Network previously reported that there's a "money issue" the Rams and Stafford, who wants to be paid $50 million per season.

Stafford, 37, currently has two seasons left on a four-year, $160 million extension.

Ad Placeholder

Word emerged from both Ian Rapoport of NFL Network and Fox Sports' Jordan Schultz that Stafford and Brady met in Montana. The circumstances surrounding the meeting differed in the reports, but it was clear the Rams' signal-caller and Raiders' exec had met.

The Raiders' need for a quarterback is no secret. They had three different starters last year in Gardner Minshew II, Aidan O'Connell and Desmond Ridder. While any of them could be capable backups, Las Vegas needs a true QB1 going forward.

So it's no surprise that Brady and Stafford had a chat, and regardless of the circumstances leading up to the meeting, it seems the NFL (and the Rams) may not take issue with the situation.

At this point, though, the bigger question is whether Stafford remains a Ram or gets traded to a team willing to offer him a fatter deal. It's clear the Raiders are interested, but the New York Giants are as well, per ESPN's Jordan Raanan.

For now, Stafford remains a Ram as L.A. looks to improve upon a promising season that ended with an NFC West title and a run to the Divisional Round.

Matthew Stafford Rumors: Rams QB Wants Contract With $50M AAV Amid Trade Buzz

After Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford's agent reportedly was granted permission to gauge his trade value around the NFL, more details have emerged about the signal-caller's desires.

During an appearance on Good Morning Football, NFL Network's Peter Schrager reported, "This is a money issue, and Matthew Stafford wants to be paid what he thinks he's worth. He wants to be paid more than $50 million."

Per Over The Cap, Stafford is set to make a base salary of $23 million in 2025, though he will count for a $49.6 million cap hit due to the Rams previously deferring money on his contract to later years. His average annual value of $40 million ranks 15th among quarterbacks in the NFL, and he proved during a resurgent 2024 campaign that he still has a lot left in the tank and deserves to be paid among the top signal-callers in the league.

ESPN's Sarah Barshop reported on Saturday that while Stafford's agent received permission from the Rams to speak with other teams about his market value, the two sides have also been discussing a reworked deal.

However, Schrager indicated that Los Angeles has not yet shown a willingness to meet Stafford's demands, saying, "There are teams that are willing to pay him more than what the Rams are currently willing to pay him."

Ad Placeholder

Despite being an attractive trade target, Stafford's options are slim. Schrager named the Pittsburgh Steelers and New York Giants as potential landing spots, but he questioned whether either team would be willing to give up significant draft capital in addition to committing to a contract worth at least $50 million.

Still, it sounds like Stafford is steadfast in his belief that he deserves to be paid more, so his time in Los Angeles could be coming to an end sooner than expected.

Schefter: Matthew Stafford, Rams Have Mutual New Contract 'Goal' amid NFL Rumors

Scott Polacek
Feb 18, 2025
NFC Divisional Playoffs: Los Angeles Rams v Philadelphia Eagles

There is still some uncertainty regarding Matthew Stafford's immediate future, but the veteran quarterback and Los Angeles Rams reportedly have a "goal" in place where he would finish his NFL career with the NFC West team.

"He's due $35 million this year, none of it is guaranteed," ESPN's Adam Schefter explained Tuesday. "It's up to those two sides to figure out a number that the Rams can live with and that Matthew Stafford is more comfortable with that would enable continue and finish his NFL career with the Rams.

"That's the goal, I believe, of both sides. Now, that could change rather quickly."

Ad Placeholder

This could be an offseason of significant change in Los Angeles, as wide receiver Cooper Kupp already revealed earlier this month that the team is looking to trade him.

Kupp was the Super Bowl MVP during the 2021 season, which was also Stafford's first year with the Rams after they acquired him via trade from the Detroit Lions. They have been two of the foundational pieces in the team's run of success with three playoff appearances in the last four years.

Ad Placeholder

It seems like Stafford is far more likely to return for the 2025 campaign, although it will surely depend on the contract situation.

In addition to Schefter's report, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reported Sunday that the team has a "strong interest" in bringing him back even though his current contract is "untenable."

That is why the mutual detail of Schefter's report is so notable. Stafford understands the team wants him back at a more favorable number, and that could be the deciding factor if he truly does want to remain in Los Angeles.

If he does, the Rams once again figure to be a playoff threat given his track record with the team.
