Chiefs' Travis Kelce Picks Patrick Mahomes Over Tom Brady as NFL's GOAT

While the NFL world debates the true G.O.A.T. between Patrick Mahomes and Tom Brady, Mahomes' go-to tight end, Travis Kelce, had a predictable bias in his answer.

"I'm gonna say he is, but I'm biased toward what I see in the building," Kelce told Rob Gronkowski on NFL on Fox's pregame show. "I'm gonna say he's the greatest ever, but I know there's a pretty valid argument somewhere else."

Kelce and Mahomes have been teammates on the Kansas City Chiefs since Mahomes' rookie season in 2017. Over eight seasons together, they've won three Super Bowl titles, with the potential for a historic three-peat this year. As the Chiefs push for another championship, the debate over Mahomes vs. Brady as the greatest of all time is at an all-time high.

Brady, who spent 23 seasons in the NFL, appeared in a record 10 Super Bowls and won seven—six with the New England Patriots and one with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Mahomes, in his seventh season as a starter, has already secured three championships. A fourth Super Bowl victory would place him among elite company, joining Brady, Terry Bradshaw and Joe Montana as the only quarterbacks with four rings. Notably, Mahomes would be the first to achieve this feat before turning 30.

In their head-to-head matchups, Brady remains one of only two quarterbacks to defeat Mahomes in the postseason—and the only one to do so in a Super Bowl, with Tampa Bay's 31-9 rout of Kansas City in Super Bowl LV.

Despite Brady's past success against Mahomes in head-to-head matchups, Kelce isn't alone in backing his quarterback in the G.O.A.T. conversation. Hall of Fame quarterback Kurt Warner also believes the 29-year-old will eventually surpass Brady as the greatest of all time.

"I'm gonna say yes to this question," Warner said Sunday on NFL Network. "The reason I'm gonna say yes is because of the nature of how our game has changed. The way people watch our game is different. What I mean by that is that, right now, at the quarterback position, it's so much about the wow factor, the physical ability, and what this guy can do from a physical standpoint that nobody else can. We've seen Patrick Mahomes do so many things that make us look and say, maybe he's the most physically gifted quarterback our game has ever seen. And I believe that is what will ultimately put him over the top."

Mahomes has already earned one NFL MVP, six Pro Bowl selections and three Super Bowl MVPs. With a win over the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, it would be difficult to dispute his case against Brady's legacy.

The stars that will be participating in Super Bowl 59's clash featuring the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles showed off their pregame outfits on Sunday.

Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes arrived wearing a green suit to go along with a pair of sunglasses.

Travis Kelce also displayed his unique attire.

Meanwhile, Eagles running back Saquon Barkley showed up to Caesars Superdome wearing a denim outfit.

Chiefs wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins paid respect to his late father by wearing the mink coat that was left for him.

Here's a look at some of the other outfits worn by players arriving to the title game:

Kansas City is looking to become the first team in NFL history to win three straight Super Bowls, while Philadelphia is searching for revenge after falling to the Chiefs by the final score of 38-35 in Super Bowl 57.

Mahomes' 2024 campaign started off slow, but he thrived down the stretch of the season and helped Kansas City finish with the top record in the AFC at 15-2. Over his final six regular-season appearances, he threw for 1,524 yards and 11 touchdowns without getting picked off.

Barkley blew past expectations throughout his first year in Philadelphia, picking up a league-leading 2,005 rush yards and scoring 15 total touchdowns. He also caught 33 passes for 278 receiving yards, winning Offensive Player of the Year honors.

Both the Chiefs and Eagles have looked impressive throughout their respective postseason runs leading up to the Super Bowl.

Kansas City is coming off a hard-fought 32-29 win over the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship Game, while Philadelphia pulled away from the Washington Commanders in the fourth quarter of the NFC Championship Game to secure a 55-23 victory.

Kickoff for Super Bowl 59 is at 6:30 p.m. ET.

Report: Travis Kelce's Speech to Chiefs Ahead of Super Bowl 59 vs. Eagles Revealed

Superstar tight end Travis Kelce was reportedly among the players who spoke to the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday night ahead of Sunday's Super Bowl LIX against the Philadelphia Eagles.

According to NFL Network's Cameron Wolfe, Kelce told his teammates "how much he loves them."

Wolfe added that Kelce said while he was "driven by individual success" earlier in his career, his main motivation now is to use his voice and experience to help those around him.

Chiefs rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy told Wolfe that Kelce helped "turn his season around" by teaching him how to play with quarterback Patrick Mahomes and excel in zone coverage.

The 35-year-old Kelce is set to play in his third consecutive Super Bowl, and he will likely be a major factor in whether Kansas City becomes the first team in NFL history to win three Super Bowls in a row.

Kelce was named a Pro Bowler for the 10th straight year this season, although he had his worst numbers since his rookie season in 2013 when he appeared in only one game.

The four-time First Team All-Pro finished with 97 receptions for 823 yards and three touchdowns in 16 games, down slightly from 2023 when he had 93 catches for 984 yards and five scores.

Kelce had seven consecutive 1,000-yard seasons from 2016 to 2022, but his numbers are on the decline even though he remains a key part of the Chiefs' offense.

During last year's playoffs, Kelce led all players with 32 receptions for 355 yards and three touchdowns, including nine grabs for 93 yards in a Super Bowl win over the San Francisco 49ers.

He has had an up-and-down playoffs so far this season, racking up seven catches for 117 yards and a touchdown in an AFC Divisional Round win over the Houston Texans before getting limited to two catches for 19 yards in the Chiefs' 32-29 win over the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship Game.

Entering Sunday's Super Bowl, there is at least some uncertainty surrounding Kelce's NFL future.

ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter said Sunday on SportsCenter that Kelce hasn't yet decided if he will retire or continue playing next season.

Kelce previously told reporters on Super Bowl Opening Night that he sees himself "hopefully still playing football" in three years.

If the Chiefs beat the Eagles on Sunday, they will become the first team to three-peat as Super Bowl champions and Kelce will have won the fourth Super Bowl of his illustrious career.

Kelce is undoubtedly well aware of the fact that the Chiefs can make history in Super Bowl LIX, perhaps giving him and his teammates even more motivation to put their best foot forward in New Orleans.

Even if Kelce does intend to keep playing in 2025 and beyond, he will likely never have another opportunity to win three Super Bowls in a row, making Sunday arguably the biggest game of his career and the careers of his teammates.

Tom Brady Talks Importance of Patrick Mahomes Not Losing Super Bowl to Avoid Trolling

Tom Brady won seven Super Bowls during his legendary career, but even that isn't enough to avoid trolling for the three he lost.

And he believes preventing the feelings from coming with a Super Bowl loss is another pressure point for Patrick Mahomes as the Kansas City Chiefs quarterback pursues his fourth career Lombardi Trophy in Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Brady explained his thought process during a Saturday discussion with Colin Cowherd (19:25 mark) and joked about some of the trolling he still faces from his Super Bowl losses:

"When you lose this game, this is on your resume forever. A loss in the Super Bowl matters more than any loss that you're ever going to be a part of. When I go to Philly and they go 'Philly Special, Philly Special," and I'm at the Knicks game with my son and Spike Lee, I throw him a ball, and he puts the ball up and catches it on his head like the helmet catch, I mean that was 17 years ago and I'm still living that thing down.

"No one remembers the loss I had to Peyton in the 2015 Championship Game. Noone talks about the 2013 loss to Denver in the Championship Game. Noone talks about the loss to the Ravens in the 2012 AFC Championship Game. They all tell me about the losses in the Super Bowls, though.

"So I think the challenging thing, if you look at Patrick for example, you want to win this game if you're Patrick. Because if you don't, you're 3-2 in Super Bowls, and it's not a great feeling. So there is a lot of pressure, certainly from my standpoint as I got older and I realized the enormity of this game and how important it is to actually win this game."

It likely doesn't help Brady that some of his Super Bowl losses are so memorable. Two of the losses came to Eli Manning and the New York Giants, including in the 2007 season when the New England Patriots were one win away from completing an undefeated campaign but failed to do so, in part, because of David Tyree's famous helmet catch.

And the one to the Eagles to end the 2017 season was a back-and-forth thriller with Nick Foles getting the last laugh in a 41-33 win that included him catching a touchdown on the Philly Special trick play.

As for Mahomes, he is 3-1 in Super Bowls with that one loss coming against Brady.

Brady is best known for his success on the Patriots, but he led the Buccaneers to the Super Bowl title over Mahomes' Chiefs to end the 2020 campaign. Tampa Bay largely cruised to a 31-9 victory, which is a head-to-head result that could be magnified even further in the coming years as Mahomes plays himself into conversations about the greatest of all-time.

Brady is still largely seen as the GOAT for now, but Mahomes is just 29 years old and will be more than halfway to the legend's Super Bowl title total if he can defeat the Eagles on Sunday.

Yet a loss could haunt him forever if those same Philadelphia fans who still taunt Brady for Super Bowl LII have anything to say about it.

Schefter: Travis Kelce Hasn't Decided on NFL Retirement Ahead of Chiefs' Super Bowl

(Photo by Scott Winters/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)

Kansas City Chiefs superstar tight end Travis Kelce reportedly has yet to make a firm decision on whether he will retire or continue playing next season.

Speaking Sunday on SportsCenter, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter reported on Kelce's NFL future, saying:

"Well, ideally he'd like to continue playing football, but it doesn't automatically mean that he will because Travis Kelce is going to sift through his opportunities this offseason and he's going to make a decision about what is best for him moving forward.

"He hasn't made a decision about whether he will play, and he will not make a decision about whether he'll play until he figures out exactly what's in front of him, both on and off the football field. Would he love to continue playing? Yes. Could he continue playing? Yes. Will he? He hasn't made that decision, and there's plenty of time to reflect on that in the offseason."

Before deciding on his future, Kelce will focus solely on one of the biggest games of his career, as he and the Chiefs are set to go for the first Super Bowl championship three-peat in NFL history against the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX on Sunday.

The 35-year-old Kelce suggested on Super Bowl Opening Night that retirement is not something he has considered yet.

Per the Associated Press (h/t ESPN), Kelce said the following when a reporter asked him where he sees himself in three years:

"Hopefully still playing football. I love doing this, I love coming into work every day. I feel like I still have a lot of good football left in me. We'll see what happens. I know I've been setting myself up for other opportunities in my life. That's always been the goal knowing football only lasts for so long. You have to find a way to get into another career and another profession. I've been doing that in my offseason. But for the most part, I plan on being a Kansas City Chief and playing football."

Both Schefter and Kelce mentioned outside opportunities, of which there will undoubtedly be many when he decides to hang up the cleats.

Kelce already has a highly successful podcast with his brother, former Eagles center Jason Kelce, called New Heights. The podcast has become hugely popular not only because of Travis and Jason's big personalities and status as NFL greats, but also thanks to Travis' relationship with global pop megastar Taylor Swift.

Swift's fanbase has become fans of Kelce ever since it was confirmed prior to the 2023 NFL season that Travis and Taylor were dating.

New Heights could get even bigger if Travis retires and is able to commit more time to it, plus the combination of Kelce's personal stardom and the attention that comes with dating Swift would undoubtedly open up additional doors for him.

In terms of on-field performance, Kelce is still among the best tight ends in the NFL, as he was named to a 10th consecutive Pro Bowl this season.

His numbers were down when compared to the lofty standards he has set, though, as Kelce's 823 yards and three touchdowns were his lowest totals since his rookie year in 2013 when he appeared in only one game.

In 2023, Kelce finished with 93 receptions for 984 yards and five touchdowns, which marked his first season with fewer than 1,000 receiving yards since 2015.

However, Kelce rose to the occasion during the Chiefs' playoff run, racking up 32 grabs for 355 yards and three touchdowns. That marked the second consecutive postseason in which Kelce led all players in catches, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns.

While Kelce was limited to two receptions for 19 yards in the Chiefs' 32-29 win over the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship Game, he went off for 117 yards and a touchdown on seven catches against the Houston Texans in the AFC Divisional Round, which suggests he remains capable of huge performances on the big stage.

With 10 Pro Bowls, four First Team All-Pros and three Super Bowl wins, Kelce is already cemented as a future first-ballot Hall of Famer and one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history.

If he dominates on Sunday and wins a third consecutive Super Bowl, he will perhaps remove all doubt regarding whether he is the best tight end to ever play.

Doing that would leave Kelce with nothing left to prove, which could conceivably make retiring an easier decision, but he could always up the ante by going for a fourth straight Super Bowl win in that scenario instead.

Whether Travis Kelce returns for the 2025 NFL season could depend on the results of Super Bowl LIX, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Rapoport reported Saturday that the Kansas City Chiefs tight end "still hasn't made up his mind" about playing a 13th NFL season.

"Sources informed of his thinking say Kelce's decision could hinge on the results of Sunday's game against the Philadelphia Eagles," Rapoport wrote.

Rapoport continued:

A win would make the Chiefs the first NFL team to win three consecutive Super Bowls, allowing Kelce to walk off into the sunset in a way almost no one gets to do. A loss could fuel him to return for the 2025 season, but it also could show him it's time.

The Chiefs and Eagles kick off in New Orleans on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. ET.

The Kansas City Chiefs want to re-sign impending free agent wide receiver Marquise "Hollywood" Brown, but members within the organization believe that Buffalo Bills star quarterback Josh Allen would like to play with him, per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

"The Chiefs very much want to keep receiver Hollywood Brown, who should have a good market due to teams' desire for speed options on the outside," Fowler reported.

"Mahomes advocated for signing Brown last year and will likely do so again. Will another star quarterback -- like Josh Allen -- be next? People with the Chiefs I spoke to this week believe that Allen has long wanted to play with Brown."

Brown was limited to two regular-season games after suffering a sternoclavicular injury during the preseason. He returned in Week 16 and has been featured in the Chiefs' run to the Super Bowl.

LeBron James is picking the Kansas City Chiefs to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 59.

"It's hard to go against Mahomes, so I got the Chiefs winning the game," James explained.

The Los Angeles Lakers star picked Eagles running back Saquon Barkley and Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy to score a touchdown. James also picked Patrick Mahomes to rush for at least 40 yards and Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts to throw for at least 200 yards.

Barkley has scored a touchdown in two of the Eagles' three postseason games during their current run to the Super Bowl, while Worthy has scored once in Kansas City's two playoff contests.

The NBA's all-time leading scorer has praised Mahomes in the past, putting the signal-caller on his personal Mt. Rushmore of quarterbacks throughout NFL history in Aug. 2024.

James is in the midst of another strong season with the Lakers, averaging 24.5 points, 7.8 rebounds and 9.0 assists per game while shooting 51.6 percent from the field and hitting 39.1 percent of his attempts from three-point territory.

Kansas City will be attempting to become the first team in NFL history to win the Super Bowl in three consecutive seasons, while Philadelphia is looking for revenge after falling to the Chiefs in Super Bowl 57.

Kickoff between the Eagles and Chiefs on Sunday is at 6:30 p.m. ET.

George Karlaftis' $15.2M Contract Option Reportedly Exercised by Chiefs

Andrew Peters
Feb 5, 2025
Texans Chiefs Football

George Karlaftis is sticking around in Kansas City.

The Chiefs exercised Karlaftis' fifth-year option, per ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, meaning he'll be under contract through the 2026 season unless the two sides agree to a long-term extension before then.

Karlaftis will earn $15.2 million in 2026 on his fifth-year option.

The former 30th overall pick in the 2022 NFL draft, Karlaftis has had a strong start to his career. He had a solid rookie year with 33 tackles, six sacks, four passes defended and four tackles for loss before posting 47 tackles, 10.5 sacks, a forced fumble and three passes defended in 2023.

Ad Placeholder

He played a big role in the Chiefs' Super Bowl run, posting 19 tackles and three sacks in Kansas City's four playoff games. He also had a crucial fumble recovery in the Super Bowl against the San Francisco 49ers.

In 2024, Karlaftis recorded 35 tackles, eight sacks, five passes defended and nine tackles for loss. He posted a strong playoff performance with 13 tackles and four sacks across Kansas City's three games.

Ad Placeholder

The Chiefs were able to add more help on their defensive line in the draft, bringing in Omarr Norman-Lott and Ashton Gillotte in rounds two and three. This should help take some of the burden off Karlaftis, who has been easily their most productive edge player over the past two seasons.

Karlaftis, still just 24 years old, has shown early in his career that he can be a force on the defensive line, and the Chiefs want to keep him around for at least one more year.
