Tre Johnson Declares for 2025 NBA Draft After 1 Season at Texas, B/R's No. 6 Prospect

Doric Sam
Apr 8, 2025
Texas v Tennessee

After his stellar freshman season at Texas, shooting guard Tre Johnson is ready to test his skills at the next level.

Johnson announced on Tuesday's episode of NBA Today that he is declaring for the 2025 NBA draft.

B/R's Jonathan Wasserman ranked him as the No. 6 prospect in his draft big board and predicted he would be selected by the Toronto Raptors with the No. 7 pick in his latest mock draft.

Johnson started all 33 of his appearances for the Longhorns and led the team with 19.9 points per game while adding 3.1 rebounds and 2.7 assists. He shot 42.7 percent from the field and 39.7 percent from three-point range on his way to earning SEC Freshman of the Year honors.

Texas went 19-16 this season and ended the year with an 86-80 loss to Xavier in the First Four of the 2025 NCAA Tournament. Johnson scored 23 points in that game and chipped in 6 rebounds and two assists.

WassermanĀ statedĀ that his final collegiate performance "painted a fairly accurate picture of the scouting report," as he "wowed with perimeter creation, footwork for separation and rhythm, balance on his jumpers and high-level shotmaking skill from on and off the ball."

Johnson could use some improvements in his playmaking ability, and he showed a penchant for settling for jump shots rather than driving to the rim aggressively. His defense has also left much to be desired, but the right development can make him a reliable NBA player.

"Johnson will look like an easy fit and sure-fire scorer/shooter to plug in right away," Wasserman added. "He'll likely start to draw serious consideration closer to No. 4 or No. 5, based on the idea that it's difficult to reach a certain level of stardom relying so heavily on tough pull-ups or step-backs without offering another layer of playmaking or impact defense."

Report: Texas HC Rodney Terry to be Fired After 2025 NCAA Tournament Loss vs. Xavier

Xavier v Texas

A disappointing season for the Texas Longhorns will reportedly cost head coach Rodney Terry his job.

Per Chip Brown of 247Sports.com, Terry is expected to be fired following Texas' 86-80 loss to Xavier in the First Four NCAA tournament game on Wednesday.

Terry took over as Longhorns head coach on an interim basis in December 2022, when the program suspended Chris Beard following anĀ arrest that saw him charged with family violence after he allegedly strangled his fiancee.

Beard wasĀ officially firedĀ by Texas on Jan. 5, 2023, with Terry being named head coach for the remainder of the season.

After leading Texas to a 22-8 record and an appearance in the Elite Eight that season, Terry was named the full-time coach and given a five-year contract through the 2027-28 season.

Terry has been unable to replicate the initial success he had. The Longhorns entered the 2023-24 season ranked in the top 20 of the AP poll and won 12 of their first 15 games, but they closed with a 10-10 record over the final 20 games and lost in the second round of the NCAA tournament to Tennessee.

strong recruiting class, led by Tre Johnson, had optimism high for the Longhorns going into this season. They never really put it together, finishing 19-16 overall after Wednesday's loss.

This marks the first time since 2020-21 that Texas failed to win at least 20 games in a season.

Per USA Today's coaching salary database, Terry's buyout is $5.4 million. His total pay this season was just over $3 million.

Terry returned to Texas as an assistant on Beard's staff in 2021. He previously worked with the program as an assistant under Rick Barnes from 2002 to '11.

The 56-year-old Terry has a 62-37 overall record with the Longhorns. They finished 6-12 in conference play this season, their first year in the SEC.

Texas' Rodney Terry Apologizes for Confronting UCF Players Over 'Horns Down' Gestures

Texas men's basketball head coach Rodney Terry apologized on Saturday for confronting UCF players for giving the team a "horns down" gesture during a 77-71 loss.

"We have a lot of passion for who we are and what we are representing. We try to do that in a class manner, at the highest level," Terry said, via the Associated Press (via ESPN). "If I offended some of our fans as well in not handling myself in the right way ... I apologize to our fan base as well, and understand what it means to be the head coach at the University of Texas and what our brand stands for."

He was seen reprimanding UCF players in the handshake line following the defeat on Wednesday, calling the hand sign "classless."

He doubled down on his stance immediately after the game, reiterating his belief that the hand signal was "classless."

"You don't go through the handshake line, or prior to getting to the handshake line, and have about six or seven guys putting the horns down," said Terry. "We don't do that because when you do those kinds of things, it looks very classless and it also looks like you were just hoping to win."

The gesture has been utilized by rivals of the Longhorns for several years, as fans and athletes at Texas have used the "Hook 'Em Horns" hand signal to celebrate big plays during games.

Terry's group responded to the loss by upsetting No. 9 Baylor, narrowly winning 75-73 on Saturday. With the score tied and roughly five seconds remaining in the second half, Junior guard Tyrese Hunter was able to connect on a game-winning layup just before time expired.

Texas moved to 13-5 following the victory, snapping a brief two-game losing streak. Although Terry was impressed with his team's performance, he attempted to make amends with UCF head coach Johnny Dawkins.

"He has a good program and they're having a good year," he said (via ESPN). "Personally, if I offended him or his program, or anyone for that matter, that was not my intention."

The Longhorns' next matchup will come against No. 15 Oklahoma on Tuesday, with tip-off at 7 p.m. ET.

5-Star Recruit Tre Johnson Commits to Texas Over Baylor; No. 1 SG Prospect for 2024

The Texas Longhorns seriously bolstered their recruiting class in 2024, landing 5-star shooting guard Tre Johnson on Wednesday.

"I chose Texas because I like their family culture and my relationship with the coaching staff," he told Joe Tipton of On3.

He went with the Longhorns over Baylor and had a long list of offers, including from Kentucky and Kansas.

Johnson, who hails from Dallas, is considered the No. 4 overall player in the Class of 2024, the top shooting guard and the top player from the state of Texas, per 247Sports' Composite Rankings.

Adam Finkelstein of 247Sports called him "one of the very best scorers in the national class" and a "threat at different levels" who "just has a knack for putting the ball in the basket."

He added that as "he learns to become more efficient offensively, and competitive defensively, his game should continue to go to new levels."

Don't expect Johnson to only be a scorer at Texas, however.

"They want me to play on and off the ball," he told Tipton. "Sometimes play the 1 and create for others."

Johnson leads a strong Class of 2024 for the Longhorns, joining 4-star shooting guard Cam Scott and 4-star power forward Nicolas Codie. That has the team ranked fourth in 247Sports' recruiting rankings for the 2024 cycle, trailing only Duke, Kentucky and Missouri.

But the games are played on the court, not on the recruiting trail, and under Rodney Terry the Longhorns are looking to turn around a program that hadn't advanced past the second round in the NCAA tournament for 13 straight seasons before reaching the Elite Eight last year.

"I'm a winner and I'm trying to come in and do some winning," Johnson told Tipton.

The Longhorns are hoping he's up to that task.

Ron Holland, one of the top prospects in the 2023 college basketball recruiting class, announced his decommitment from the University of Texas on Friday.

ESPN's Jeff Borzello tweeted a screenshot of Holland's statement on Instagram in which he said he was reopening his recruitment, with Texas still being among the top schools in the running to land him:

Per 247Sports' composite rankings, Holland is a 5-star recruit, and the No. 4 overall player and No. 1 power forward in the 2023 class.

The 6'8", 195-pound power forward starred at Duncanville High School in Duncanville, Texas, and was selected as part of the 2023 McDonald's All-American Game.

Holland received scholarship offers from many of the top programs in college basketball, including Kentucky, UCLA, Houston and Kansas, per 247Sports. He also has the option to play professionally in the G League or overseas.

Adam Finkelstein, who is 247Sports' director of scouting, touted Holland as an "impactful" player who is "very athletic" and capable of contributing at a high level on both ends of the floor.

When the Longhorns originally secured a commitment from Holland, they thought they were adding another top-end prospect to a team on the rise.

Texas has reached the NCAA tournament in each of the past three seasons, including the 2022-23 campaign, which was the program's first season under head coach Rodney Terry.

The Longhorns posted a 29-9 record, won the Big 12 tournament and reached the Elite Eight of the NCAA tourney before falling to Miami.

Texas remains in the hunt to sign Holland and continue its upward trajectory, but now it must contend with many of the other most prestigious programs in the sport.

Report: Rodney Terry, Texas Agree to 5-Year, $15.3M HC Contract After Elite Eight Run

The Texas Longhorns are reportedly removing the interim tag fo head coach Rodney Terry and rewarding him with a long-term contract to lead the men's basketball team.

According to Jeff Goodman of Stadium, the Big 12 program and Terry agreed Monday on a five-year deal that will keep him in place to try to build on the momentum he generated with a strong finish to the 2022-23 campaign.

Kirk Bohls of the Austin American-Statesman reported the deal is worth $15.3 million.

This was anything but a surprise since Chip Brown of 247Sports cited "a high-level university source" Sunday who said the offer for Terry was coming.

Brown noted a number of Texas players advocated on the coach's behalf following their Elite Eight loss to Miami, including forward Dillon Mitchell.

"I'd vouch for RT any day," Mitchell said. "Not only because of the coach he is on the court but because of the man he is off the court. He shows you how much he loves you and cares about you. After the game, you could see it in his face. You could see the emotion in his face about how proud he was of us."

Terry was previously an assistant coach for the program under Rick Barnes before he was the head coach at Fresno State from 2011-12 through 2017-18 and UTEP from 2018-19 through 2020-21.

Texas brought him back as associate head coach under Chris Beard and then gave him the interim head coaching position when it fired Beard in January.

Beard was arrested on a third-degree felony charge of assault by strangulation, family violence, though the charge was dropped. Ole Miss hired him as its men's basketball coach earlier this month.

It wasn't the easiest situation for Terry to step into as the interim coach, but he found immediate success and led the Longhorns to a 22-8 record and Big 12 tournament title. Their 20-point victory over Kansas in the conference tournament championship game was one of the most impressive wins of the season.

Texas then reached the Elite Eight with NCAA tournament wins over Colgate, Penn State and Xavier, though its Big Dance run came to an end when it lost a 13-point second-half lead to the Hurricanes on Sunday.

Terry had the Longhorns one win from their first Final Four in 20 years and now has five years to build the program in his image.

Rodney Terry Reportedly Will Be Offered Texas' Permanent HC Job After Elite Eight Run

The Texas Longhorns men's basketball team's season came to a disappointing end with Sunday's loss to Miami in the Elite Eight, but interim head coach Rodney Terry will reportedly receive some good news in the near future.

According to Chip Brown of 247Sports, a "high-level university source" said the plan is for Texas to offer Terry the permanent coaching job and perhaps make an announcement as soon as Tuesday.

"Rodney Terry stepped up and did an amazing, classy job leading this program and absolutely deserves this opportunity," the source said.

Jeff Goodman of Stadium weighed in as well:

Terry took over the position when Texas fired Chris Beard in January after he was arrested on a third-degree felony charge of family violence.

In February, Katie Hall and Thomas Jones of the Austin American-Statesman reported the Travis County district attorney's office dropped the felony domestic violence charge. Ole Miss has since hired Beard as its men's basketball head coach.

As for Terry, he led the Longhorns to a 22-8 record in 30 games and also directed a run to the Big 12 tournament championship. Texas defeated Kansas by 20 points in a dominant performance in the tournament's championship game.

That gave the team plenty of momentum heading into the Big Dance, and it parlayed that into victories over Colgate, Penn State and Xavier to reach the Elite Eight. It seemed like it would reach its first Final Four in 20 years when it built a double-digit lead over Miami in Sunday's contest, but the Hurricanes came charging back for the comeback win.

It wasn't the end the team was looking for, but it was still an impressive run under Terry.

Brown noted Dylan Disu, Dillon Mitchell, Arterio Morris and Timmy Allen were among the players who advocated for Terry to keep the job after the loss.

"I'd vouch for RT [Terry] any day," Mitchell said. "Not only because of the coach he is on the court but because of the man he is off the court. He shows you how much he loves you and cares about you. After the game, you could see it in his face. You could see the emotion in his face about how proud he was of us."

It seems like those players are going to get their wish.

Jim Larrañaga Touted as HOFer After Miami Rallies Past Texas to Reach Final Four

Miami is headed to the Final Four of the NCAA men's basketball tournament for the first time in program history.

The fifth-seeded Hurricanes defeated the second-seeded Texas Longhorns 88-81 in Sunday's Elite Eight contest to determine the champion of the Midwest Region. They earned a matchup with UConn in the Final Four and are now just two victories away from cutting down the nets as national champions for the first time ever.

It looked as if Texas was going to cruise to a win for much of the contest, but Miami dominated crunch time to completely flip the script. All five starters scored in double figures, with Jordan Miller leading the way in a perfect shooting performance at 27 points on 7-of-7 from the field and 13-of-13 from the free-throw line.

The win means Jim LarraƱaga's rebuilding process is complete, and the head coach drew plenty of praise on social media:

https://twitter.com/NicoleAuerbach/status/1640134320793714689

Sunday's first Elite Eight game was defined by defense as San Diego State defeated Creighton, but Texas offense had different ideas when it took the court. The Longhorns set the tone on that end of the floor while pouring in 45 first-half points to jump out to a quick lead.

The bench combination of Brock Cunningham, Arterio Morris and Sir'Jabari Rice provided an important spark with forward Dylan Disu sidelined because of a foot injury, while Timmy Allen and Marcus Carr spearheaded the efforts for the starters.

Texas extended the lead to double digits in the second half and seemed to be in full control with Carr facilitating and Allen attacking the lane, but Miami's balanced attack and ability to force turnovers allowed it to come storming back even though it wasn't relying on three-point shooting.

An and-1 from Norchad Omier gave the ACC representatives the lead in the final six minutes and set the stage for the back-and-forth finish.

That stage was dominated by Hurricane free throws, as their final 13 points came from the charity stripe. While that will leave a bad taste in Texas' mouth as a result, it was also a testament to the clutch shooting of Miller in particular with the game on the line.

If that continues, UConn could be in trouble.

Texas' Dylan Disu Out for Elite Eight Game vs. Miami with Foot Injury

Texas forward Dylan Disu will sit out Sunday's NCAA men's basketball tournament game against the Miami Hurricanes with a bone bruise in his left foot.

Disu left Texas' 83-71 Sweet Sixteen win over the Xavier Musketeers on Friday early and returned to the bench wearing a walking boot. Before the injury, he averaged 22.5 points and 10.0 rebounds per game in the Longhorns' first two March Madness contests.

Texas must have a "next man up" mentality when facing down the Hurricanes without Disu, interim coach Rodney Terry said Saturday.

If the Longhorns can find the depth to win, it will mark the team's first trip to the Final Four in 20 years. Tipoff is at 5:05pm ET.

After contributing 17 points and 10 rebounds to help the Longhorns knock out the Colgate Raiders in the first round of the NCAA tournament, the 6'9" senior enjoyed his best game of the season during Texas' 71-66 second-round win over Penn State on March 18.

Disu led his team with season-high 28 points, and his 14 two-pointers broke a Longhorns record set by Kevin Durant and LaMarcus Aldridge for field goals in a single NCAA tournament game.

It was a stunning breakout for a forward who averaged 8.8 points per game, and only once recorded double-digit field goals, throughout Texas' regular season.

"I feel really confident right now," Disu told reporters after the Penn State game. "I think it comes from the encouragement of Coach Terry and my teammates. They're telling me to continue to do what I'm doing for a couple weeks now, and they believe in me."

Disu, whose early college career at Vanderbilt was limited by injuries, suffered the bone bruise prior to Friday's contest against Xavier, CBS reported. He only played two minutes before exiting the game.

Forward Christian Bishop should start for Texas against Miami. During Disu's absence on Friday, Bishop stepped up to record 18 points and snagged nine rebounds to help the Longhorns reach the Elite Eight.
