The No. 2 seed Texas Longhorns continued its dominant run in the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament with an emphatic 83-71 victory over the No. 3 Xavier Musketeers on Friday in the Sweet Sixteen.

Texas stormed to a 42-25 halftime lead and never looked back thanks in part to guard Marcus Carr, who scored 15 of his 18 points in the first half. Backcourt mate Tyrese Hunter led all Texas scorers with 19 points.

Longhorn reserves Christian Bishop and Sir'Jabari Rice came off the bench to score 18 and 16 points, respectively.

It was a remarkable performance from a team missing big man Dylan Disu, who came into the game with a reported bone bruise in his left foot and played just one minute.

In a tournament rife with massive upsets, Texas is the highest seed remaining with all four No. 1 seeds and the other three No. 2 seeds out of March Madness.

The Longhorns have won their three games against Colgate, Penn State and Xavier by an average of 12.33 points under the tutelage of interim head coach Rodney Terry, who led Texas to a Big 12 championship after a 76-56 blowout win over Kansas.

Terry took over for former head coach Chris Beard, who was suspended in December and fired in January after being arrested on a felony domestic violence charge, which was dismissed in February.

Terry still carries the interim title, but it's clear that he deserves to be named Texas' full-time head coach after leading the Longhorns deep into this tournament.

The Longhorns could very well win the national championship, and that's something that's never been done before in team history.

Numerous analysts praised Terry and stated that he's earned the job full time.

Texas will now face No. 5 Miami on Sunday in the Elite Eight. A win there would put Texas back into the Final Four for just the first time since 2003 and the second time since 1947.

Dylan Disu Impresses Twitter as Texas Beats Penn State in 2023 Men's NCAA Tournament

The second-seeded Texas Longhorns faced a stiff test in the second round of the NCAA men's basketball tournament against the 10th-seeded Penn State Nittany Lions, but an unlikely hero stepped up in Dylan Disu to power the team to a 71-66 win.

Disu scored 28 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to spearhead the victory, which pushed the Longhorns to the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2008. He shot 14-of-20 from the field and broke Kevin Durant's program record for most field goals in an NCAA tournament game.

The senior forward entered Saturday's matchup averaging just 8.5 points per game this season. He's upped his play as of late, as this was his fifth straight game scoring in double figures.

Fans on Twitter were blown away by Disu's performance as he put Texas on his back on Saturday:

During the NCAA tournament, teams need significant contributions from not only their star players but also their role players if they hope to make a deep run.

Disu gave Texas just that, and he could be the key to powering the team to a potential national title if he continues playing like this.

The Longhorns will face No. 3 Xavier or No. 11 Pitt in the Sweet 16.

Texas' Balance Lionized by Twitter in Comfortable NCAA Tournament Win vs. Colgate

The No. 2 Texas Longhorns hit 13 of 23 three-pointers en route to an 81-61 win over the No. 15 Colgate Raiders in the first round of the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament Thursday.

Colgate entered the game as the No. 1 three-point-shooting team in the country (40.8 percent). Texas was 190th at 33.9 percent.

Yet the Longhorns proved nearly unbeatable from deep, making threes whenever a pesky and talented Colgate team tried to get back into the game against a heavy favorite.

Sir'Jabari Rice hit seven of 10 three-pointers en route to 23 points. Marcus Carr scored 17 points and made four of six threes. When they weren't cooking from deep, Dylan Disu was doing work inside with 17 points and nine boards.

Meanwhile, Colgate went uncharacteristically ice cold from beyond the arc (3-of-15). All seven rotation players scored at least five points, led by Ryan Moffatt and Keegan Records with 13 apiece.

It was still a great season for Colgate, which made the NCAA tournament for the fourth time in five years and won the Patriot League.

However, the Longhorns showed why they should be considered national title contenders after coming into March Madness hot on the heels of a Big 12 tournament championship.

Twitter recognized its efforts from the three-point line and otherwise, with a notable hat tip to Rice.

Texas will play the winner of No. 10 Penn State vs. No. 7 Texas A&M in the second round Saturday.

Texas Wows Twitter With Dominance in Big 12 Title Win vs. Jalen Wilson, Kansas

KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI - MARCH 11: Christian Bishop #32 of the Texas Longhorns celebrates a basket against the Kansas Jayhawks during the first half in the Big 12 Tournament Championship game at T-Mobile Center on March 11, 2023 in Kansas City, Missouri. (Photo by Jamie Squire/Getty Images)

The No. 7 Texas Longhorns are Big 12 champions, upsetting the No. 3 Kansas Jayhawks 76-56 on Saturday in the Big 12 Championship Game at T-Mobile Center in Kansas City ahead of Selection Sunday.

The Longhorns were dominant from start to finish, outscoring the Jayhawks 39-33 in the first half before outscoring Bill Self's squad 37-23 in the second half to secure the victory fairly early.

Texas was paced by consistent scoring from senior forward Dylan Disu, senior guard Sir'Jabari Rice and senior guard Marcus Carr. Disu paced the team with 18 points, while Rice and Carr each scored 17 points.

The Longhorns were also impressive on defense. While they allowed junior forward Jalen Wilson to score 24 points, the only other Jayhawk to notch double digits was junior guard Joseph Yesufu, who finished with 11 points.

After the game, Twitter was quick to praise Texas for its dominance against a Kansas team that is still likely to earn a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament:

This is the second time in three years that Texas has won the Big 12 championship. When the Longhorns last did so during the 2020-21 season, they went on to be eliminated in the first round of the NCAA tournament, losing 53-52 to Abilene Christian.

Texas is projected to be a No. 2 seed in the NCAA tournament, though the Longhorns certainly playing better than that. They will find out their fate Sunday.

Baylor Applauded by CBB Twitter for Downing Texas After Keyonte George's Ankle Injury

Baylor just needed some home cooking.

After dropping two straight on the road, the No. 9 Bears returned to the Ferrell Center on Saturday and bounced back with an 81-72 victory over No. 8 Texas to improve to 21-8 overall and 10-6 in the Big 12.

Perhaps the only ones happier than Baylor with the result was Kansas, as the Jayhawks moved ahead of the Longhorns in the conference standings. Texas fell to 22-7 overall and 11-5 in the Big 12 because it was unable to take advantage of a quick start.

Baylor's win was all the more notable because it lost leading scorer Keyonte George to an early injury, and it drew plenty of praise from social media:

The Bears couldn't have scripted a worse start even outside of George's injury. They couldn't make a shot, had early turnover problems and scored a grand total of four points in the first eight minutes as they fell behind by double digits.

Just when it seemed like the Longhorns would cruise to a straightforward road win, Baylor flipped the game with an 18-0 run behind a stifling defensive effort that continued throughout the game.

It limited Texas' leading scorer Marcus Carr to 3-of-10 shooting, cut off driving lanes and pressured ball-handlers as it gradually seized control of the contest. Dylan Disu did his best to keep the Longhorns within striking distance with 24 points in an impressive showing, but it was nowhere near enough to counter the effort on the other end.

Adam Flagler (14 points, four assists, three rebounds and two steals) did a little bit of everything, Flo Thamba (12 points and 12 rebounds) and Jalen Bridges (17 points and eight rebounds) controlled the boards and provided interior scoring, and Dale Bonner and Langston Love provided a spark off the bench with their outside shooting.

It was just the type of win that can springboard a team into March, and the Bears will look to keep things rolling against Oklahoma State on Monday.

Kentucky's John Calipari Reportedly Has 'Some Level of Interest' in Texas HC Opening

The John Calipari-to-Texas rumors just won't go away. At least not completely.

According to ESPN's Jeff Borzello, "There seems to be some level of interest on both sides, according to sources, but Texas hasn't advanced too far in its search, and it's premature to say Calipari is even involved."

When Kentucky was off to a 10-6 start and fan unrest was high, losing Calipari to Texas may not have set off alarm bells for fans in Lexington. But the Wildcats have responded by winning nine out of their last 12 games, including two wins over Tennessee.

This is no longer a bubble team—a strong SEC tournament could see this Kentucky side earn itself a very solid seed.

And as Borzello added, "Firing him was not really a feasible option anyway; his buyout is in the $40 million range."

Texas, meanwhile, just never seems to quite get the basketball program to the heights that the school's resources would suggest it should reach.

Before Chris Beard's arrest on a felony domestic violence charge, and his subsequent firing, he was 29-13 with one NCAA tournament appearance, though the team bowed out in the second round.

In fact, the Longhorns haven't gotten past the first weekend since reaching the Elite Eight in the 2007-08 season.

That hasn't been an issue for Calipari's Kentucky—since taking over in the 2009-10 season, he's won a title, reached the Final Four three times, the Elite Eight six times and the Sweet 16 seven times. He's only missed the NCAA tournament twice, though one of those came last season, leading to the increased consternation around this year's slow start.

But it would appear the ship has been righted, at least for the time being. Just don't be surprised if Texas comes calling.

Former Texas HC Chris Beard's Domestic Violence Charge Dropped by District Attorney

The district attorney's office in Travis County, Texas, dismissed the domestic violence case against former Texas men's basketball coach Chris Beard on Wednesday:

"Our office takes all domestic abuse cases seriously to ensure justice for the victims," district attorney José Garza said. "In every case, we are obligated to evaluate the facts and evidence and do our best to reach an outcome that will keep the victim and our community safe."

Beard released a statement on Thursday:

Texas fired Beard on Jan. 5 and wrote a letter to him citing a portion of his contract to say he was fired for cause. Rodney Terry was tabbed as his replacement on an interim basis.

Beard's lawyer, Perry Minton, responded to the letter and contended whether the university had grounds to terminate his contract in that manner. He had signed a seven-year, $35 million deal in April 2021.

His ouster came less than a month after he was arrested by Austin police.

The Austin Police Department said officers responded to an alleged domestic disturbance on Dec. 12: "APD officers responded and located a woman who stated she had been assaulted and strangled by Christopher Michael Beard."

According to the arrest affidavit obtained by the Austin American-Statesman, Beard's fiancee, Randi Trew, told an officer at the scene she and Beard "had been upset with each other for several days over relationship issues." She said he assaulted her during an argument on Dec. 12.

"He just snapped on me and became super violent," Trew said.

She alleged he "choked me, threw me off the bed, bit me, bruises all over my leg, throwing me around, and going nuts." Officers said they observed a bite mark on Trew's right forearm, abrasions to her right eyebrow and left leg, and a cut on her thumb.

However, Trew issued a statement on Dec. 23 saying Beard "did not strangle me" and that she wouldn't "refute" his allegation of acting in self-defense.

"I do not believe Chris was trying to intentionally harm me in any way," she said. "It was never my intent to have him arrested or prosecuted."

Chris Beard Fired as Texas MCBB Head Coach After December Arrest on Felony Charge

Texas fired men's basketball coach Chris Beard on Thursday and announced Rodney Terry will finish out the 2022-23 season as acting head coach.

Kirk Bohls of the Austin American-Statesman added the Longhorns fired Beard for cause. Texas suspended the 49-year-old in mid-December following his arrest on a third-degree felony charge of assault by strangulation, family violence.

The American-Stateman's Danny Davis shared the university's termination letter:

Perry Minton, Beard's lawyer, disputed the notion the circumstances behind the firing provided the university with cause:

Austin police said officers responded to a disturbance call on Dec. 12. The altercation was over when authorities arrived and they "located a woman who stated she had been assaulted and strangled by Christopher Michael Beard."

Per the arrest affidavit (via the American-Statesman), an officer at the scene was told Beard and his fiancée, Randi Trew, "had been upset with each other for several days over relationship issues."

During an argument, Trew said Beard "just snapped on me and became super violent" after she accidentally broke his reading glasses. She also told police at one point he "choked me, threw me off the bed, bit me, bruises all over my leg, throwing me around, and going nuts."

In the affidavit, police said they saw injuries to Trew, including a "bite mark to the right forearm, abrasion to the right eyebrow, abrasion to the left leg from the knee to the foot, and a cut to the left thumb with dried blood." Police said Trew also made a statement that she had suffered these injuries.

Trew issued a statement on Dec. 23 recanting what she had told police. She said Beard didn't strangle her, adding she didn't refute his assertion he was acting in self-defense when the alleged assault occurred.

Following Trew's statement, Texas said the investigation remained ongoing.

The district attorney's office in Travis County also confirmed Wednesday that prosecutors were still looking at all of the evidence in the case.

Texas hired Beard in April 2021, giving him a seven-year, $35 million contract. His $5.3 million salary was the sixth-highest in Division I last season.

The Longhorns went 22-12 in 2021-22 and reached the second round of the 2022 NCAA tournament. They've gotten off to a 12-2 start in 2022-23 and sit sixth in the Associated Press Top 25 poll.

No. 6 Texas Upset by Kansas State; Teams Combined for Big 12 Record 219 Points

No. 6 Texas' six-game winning streak came to an end on Tuesday night with a 116-103 loss to Kansas State.

Per ESPN's Myron Medcalf, the 219 combined points set a new Big 12 record for a regulation game.

The previous record was 199 points when Texas beat Colorado 104-95 on Feb. 9, 2002.

Medcalf noted the Wildcats' 116 points were the most by an unranked opponent against a top-10 team since Loyola Marymount's 122-114 loss to LSU in 1990.

Kansas State played a consistent game, scoring 58 points in the first and second half.

The Longhorns tried to make it interesting in the second half. They scored 63 points in the final 20 minutes and cut the deficit to eight at 96-88 after Marcus Carr's three-pointer with four minutes, 54 seconds remaining.

Kansas State responded with a 7-0 run immediately after that to seal the win. Fifth-year senior Markquis Nowell scored a career-high 36 points and went 6-of-10 from behind the arc.

Keyontae Johnson finished with 28 points, nine rebounds and five assists for the Wildcats.

Carr dropped 27 points on 10-of-17 shooting with six rebounds and six assists in 36 minutes. Tyrese Hunter had a team-high 29 points in the loss.

Texas (12-2) is ranked No. 6 in the Associated Press Top 25 for the second consecutive week. The team had won six straight games since an 85-78 loss to Illinois on Dec. 6.

Kansas State (13-1) is unranked but was among the teams receiving votes in this week's AP poll. The Wildcats have another marquee matchup against No. 19 Baylor on Saturday. A win in that game would almost certainly put them in the top 25 next week.

Randi Trew, who is engaged to Texas men's basketball head coach Chris Beard, released her first statement on Friday evening since her fiancé was charged with a third-degree felony of assault on a family/household member impeding breath circulation on Dec. 12.

Ryan Autullo of the Austin American-Statesman relayed the remarks:

"Chris and I are deeply saddened that we have brought negative attention upon our family, friends and the University of Texas, among others. As Chris' fiancée and biggest supporter, I apologize for the role I played in this unfortunate event. I realize that my frustration, when breaking his glasses, initiated a physical struggle between Chris and myself. Chris did not strangle me, and I told that to law enforcement that evening. Chris has stated that he was acting in self-defense, and I do not refute that. I do not believe Chris was trying to intentionally harm me in any way. It was never my intent to have him arrested or prosecuted. We appreciate everyone's support and prayers during this difficult time."

Beard was taken to Travis County Jail in the early morning hours of Dec. 12 but posted a $10,000 bond and was released that day. On the same day, Texas announced that Beard was suspended without pay.

Tony Plohetski, Danny Davis and Ryan Autullo of the Austin-American Statesman relayed notes from the affidavit, in which a woman who said she was the coach's fiancée said Beard "choked me, threw me off the bed, bit me, bruises all over my leg, throwing me around, and going nuts."

According to the affidavit, the woman said she took Beard's reading glasses from his hand and broke them, at which point she said that "he just snapped on me and became super violent." She also said Beard put his arm around her neck and choked her for five seconds.

The affidavit described the following visible injuries: a "bite mark to the right forearm, abrasion to the right eyebrow, abrasion to the left leg from the knee to the foot, and a cut to the left thumb with dried blood."

Beard's attorney, Perry Minton, told Fox 7 that his client is "100 percent innocent of these charges."

"He should never have been arrested. The complainant wants him released immediately, and all charges dismissed."

Beard, 49, is in his second season coaching Texas, his alma mater. He coached at Texas Tech from 2016 to 2021 and led the Red Raiders to a 2019 national championship appearance before leaving for the Longhorns, who are currently led by interim coach Rodney Terry.
