Haason Reddick Rumors: Jets' Woody Johnson 'Never Had Any Intention of Trading' Star

The idea of trading disgruntled edge-rusher Haason Reddick was a nonstarter for New York Jets owner Woody Johnson, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Schefter reported Sunday the Jets agreed to a restructured contract with Reddick to end his holdout. He cited a source who said Johnson was "very involved in working this out" and reported the owner "never had any intention of trading Reddick."

Johnson spoke about Reddick's holdout in his first media call after firing head coach Robert Saleh. He told reporters the Jets were ready to welcome the two-time Pro Bowler to the team and had a clear message for him:

During the NFL's fall meeting this week, Johnson also sounded encouraged by Reddick's change of representation. The veteran defender hired Drew Rosenhaus as his new lead agent, and Johnson said he thought Rosenhaus would be able to make a compelling case for bringing the holdout to an end.

While this is clearly the outcome New York always wanted, the team might've undermined itself slightly at the negotiating table thanks to the two big moves it executed this month.

By firing Saleh and then acquiring wide receiver Davante Adams, the Jets showed they're still aiming to win a Super Bowl despite their 2-4 start. Given their short-term priorities, they weren't going to let Reddick sit at home all season.

Johnson's diplomatic approach to the situations seemingly raises the odds of Reddick getting a long-term extension from the Jets if he plays well enough. Rosenhaus told Schefter that's the continued aim.

Reddick now has 11 games with New York to rebuild his value.

Haason Reddick Ends Contract Holdout After Trade Rumors, Jets to Waive $12M+ in Fines

The longstanding impasse between the New York Jets and edge rusher Haason Reddick has finally reached its conclusion.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Reddick and the Jets agreed to a restructured contract for the 2024 season. His agent, Drew Rosenhaus, told Schefter that "we will continue to work towards a long-term extension with the Jets."

Schefter also reported the Jets are waiving the more than $12 million Reddick accrued in fines during his holdout.

After agreeing to the adjusted contract, Reddick reported to the team facility on Monday, according to The Athletic's Dianna Russini.

"Jets owner Woody Johnson was said to be 'very involved in working this out' with Rosenhaus," according to Schefter. "Johnson never had any intention of trading Reddick, despite inquires from other teams."

Reddick was initially set to make a base salary of $14.25 million this year in the final season of the three-year, $45 million contract he signed with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2022.

The Jets traded a conditional third-round pick to the Eagles to acquire Reddick in a move that was expected to bolster their defense. However, he skipped the entirety of the team's offseason program, mandatory minicamp and all of training camp as he held out for a new contract.

Reddick then missed New York's first six games of the season against the San Francisco 49ers, Tennessee Titans, New England Patriots, Denver Broncos, Minnesota Vikings and Buffalo Bills.

Schefter reported before the Titans game that the two sides were "unable to bridge their differences, and a deal doesn't appear anywhere close at this time." Jets defensive end Jermaine Johnson suffered a torn Achilles in that game, making Reddick's absence even more concerning.

SNY's Connor Hughes reported in July that the Jets offered Reddick a contract extension that he turned down prior to the trade. He reportedly agreed to participate in the team's offseason program, as the Jets were willing to negotiate a new deal for him that depended on how he performed at the start of the season. He instead "maintained minimal contact with the organization" and chose not to show up at all, and the Jets refused to negotiate until he reported to training camp.

The contentious situation reached a climax when Reddick requested to be traded from New York on Aug. 12. Jets general manager Joe Douglas released a statement saying the team informed Reddick he would not be traded.

Reddick was dropped by his agents at CAA and hired Rosenhaus and Ryan Matha as his new reps. Rosenhaus said he would attend New York's Week 6 game against Buffalo and expressed optimism that the situation would get resolved, telling Schefter, "Haason would like to be a New York Jet for years to come, and our goal is to make that happen."

However, Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reported the very next day that the Jets granted Reddick and Rosenhaus permission to explore a trade. New York was eventually able to work things out with Reddick's camp.

Now that the two sides have reached an agreement, Reddick can be a major piece in helping the Jets contend for a playoff spot this year. The 30-year-old is one of the premier pass-rushers in the league with a combined 50.5 sacks over the last four years.

Reddick is joining a talented New York defense that includes defensive tackle Quinnen Williams and star cornerback Sauce Gardner among a slew of other highly touted players. If he continues to perform the way he's been for the past few years, the Jets defense will wreak havoc on opposing quarterbacks as the team tries to end its 13-year playoff drought.

Haason Reddick Trade Rumors: Lions 'Checked on' Jets LB After Aidan Hutchinson Injury

The Detroit Lions have reportedly expressed interest in disgruntled New York Jets pass-rusher Haason Reddick.

According to Jeremy Fowler of ESPN, the Lions have "checked on" Reddick's situation in New York, as the 30-year-old veteran has yet to play in a game this season amid a contract holdout.

Lions superstar pass-rusher Aidan Hutchinson, who leads the NFL with 7.5 sacks this season despite playing in only five games, suffered a fractured tibia and fibula in last week's win over the Dallas Cowboys.

Hutchinson underwent surgery, which is likely to keep him out for the remainder of the season, leaving the Lions with a massive hole at edge rusher.

Reddick has registered double-digit sacks in each of the past two seasons, including a career-high 16 in 2022, followed by 11 last season, yielding the first two Pro Bowl selections of his career.

Despite his production, the Philadelphia Eagles traded Reddick to the Jets during the offseason, however, Reddick refused to report to his new team without a new contract.

With Reddick still not joining the team, Jets owner Woody Johnson said this week that the organization has given Reddick and his representation permission to seek a trade, per Rich Cimini of ESPN.

If the Lions can put together a quality trade package and come to some type of contractual agreement with Reddick, he would perhaps be the best possible replacement available for Hutchinson.

Aside from Reddick, Fowler named Za'Darius Smith of the Cleveland Browns and Josh Uche of the New England Patriots as pass-rushers who could possibly be available and of interest to Detroit.

Until a potential trade partner is found, the Lions are poised to move forward with what they already have at defensive end.

James Houston and Josh Paschal, neither of whom have a sack this season, are line to start for the Lions on Sunday against the undefeated NFC North rival Minnesota Vikings.

The Lions could also give significant playing time to Isaiah Thomas, who they signed off the Cincinnati Bengals' practice squad this week.

NFL Rumors: Eagles Will Get Jets' 2nd-Round Pick If Reddick Is Traded to NFC Team

The Philadelphia Eagles may get even more compensation than initially believed when they originally traded Haason Reddick to the New York Jets during the offseason.

Per NFL insider Josina Anderson, the Eagles would receive a 2026 second-round draft pick from the Jets if New York trades Reddick to an NFC team.

Anderson previously reported on Oct. 1 that the 2026 conditional pick from the Jets was involved in the deal, but it was "dependent upon the specifics of where Reddick lands if traded again."

When the deal was originally announced on April 1, it was for a 2026 third-round pick that could become a second-rounder if specific terms were met. It was believed those specific terms were built around playing time and performance benchmarks.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported at the time (h/t ESPN's Rich Cimini) the Eagles would get a second-round pick if Reddick played 67.5 percent of the defensive snaps and recorded 10 sacks for the Jets.

Reddick still has yet to take part in any activities with the Jets since the trade went down as part of a contract holdout. He is owed $14.3 million this season in the final year of a three-year, $45 million contract signed with Philadelphia in March 2022.

CAA dropped Reddick as a client last week, and he declined to sign a one-year extension with the Jets, per NFL Network's Ian Rapoport. The 30-year-old has hired Drew Rosenhaus and Ryan Matha as his new agents, per Rapoport.

The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported on Tuesday that the Jets have given Reddick's camp a "short window" to seek a trade, with Rosenhaus reaching out to teams to gauge their interest.

Reddick has averaged 20.8 quarterback hits, 12.8 tackles for loss and 12.7 sacks per season from 2020 to 23. Will McDonald is currently the only Jets player with more than 2.5 sacks through six games this season.

The NFL trade deadline is at 4 p.m. ET on Nov. 5.

NFL Trade Rumors: Haason Reddick Given Permission to Seek Deal by Jets amid Holdout

Haason Reddick still hasn't played a game for the New York Jets since they acquired him via trade, and he reportedly has the opportunity to make sure it stays that way.

Dianna Russsini of The Athletic and Jonathan Jones of CBS Sports reported Tuesday that the Jets gave Reddick and his new agent, Drew Rosenhaus, permission to seek a trade as he continues his holdout.

Russini noted New York gave them "a short window" to find such a deal and added that Rosenhaus "has been reaching out to teams over the last 12 hours to gauge interest."

To say things haven't worked out the way the Jets envisioned with the pass-rusher would be an understatement.

The AFC East team acquired him from the Philadelphia Eagles for a conditional 2026 third-round pick in the spring but didn't come to terms with him on a new deal. The 2024 season is the final one on his current contract, which added an element of risk to the trade.

Since then, Reddick held out for the entirety of training camp and the preseason, requested a trade, and hired Rosenhaus and Ryan Matha as his new agents after CAA dropped him as a client.

"We look forward to working with the Jets to get this resolved as soon as possible," Rosenhaus told ESPN's Adam Schefter shortly after the agency switch. "Haason would like to be a New York Jet for years to come, and our goal is to make that happen."

Alas, he might not be a Jet for years to come if his representation can find an agreeable trade partner.

Perhaps the Jets should have seen this coming when they made the deal. After all, Nick Shook of NFL.com reported in March that "Reddick's compensation has been a sticking point for the Eagles dating back to early February, when Philadelphia gave Reddick permission to seek a trade."

Whichever team Reddick does end up playing for will get an impact pass-rusher who is coming off two straight Pro Bowl seasons and four straight years of double-digit sacks.

He posted 16 sacks in 2022 and 11 sacks last season for the Eagles and appeared in at least 16 games in each of his first seven seasons in the league. That availability streak came to an end with this holdout, but he figures to remain productive when he does take the field.

Potential suitors could include the Detroit Lions, who Schefter reported Monday are looking for pass-rushing help after Aidan Hutchinson was likely lost for the season to a broken tibia and fibula.

Trading with any team would represent an end to this saga for the Jets, who are 2-4 to start the season following Monday's loss to the Buffalo Bills.

NFL Insider Names Clowney, Haason Reddick as Lions Trade Targets After Aidan's Injury

The Detroit Lions could be targeting several players on the trade market as the team attempts to replace the production of star defensive end Aidan Hutchinson.

Mike Sando of The Athletic listed the Carolina Panthers' Jadeveon Clowney, Cleveland Browns pass-rusher Za'Darius Smith and Haason Reddick of the New York Jets as potential options for Detroit.

Hutchinson was carted off the field during the Lions' 47-9 win over the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday with a broken tibia.

Head coach Dan Campbell told reporters after the game that the Pro Bowl pass-rusher would be "down for a while."

One NFL executive believes that a trade is necessary for a Lions team that entered the season with Super Bowl aspirations.

"They are playing at such a high level right now," the executive said, per Sando. "Sometimes there is just a moment where you have to overpay. Are you going to the Super Bowl or not? Are you going to try?"

After coming off an appearance in the NFC Championship Game, Detroit sits at 4-1 through five games. A former general manager wasn't optimistic about the Lions' ability to get a deal done, though.

"You can work the phones between now and the trade deadline, but that's going to be an uphill battle," he said, via Sando.

Clowney and Smith may be available, as they're both capable pass-rushers on teams with a combined 2-10 record. Clowney has just one sack in five games with the Panthers, but he wrapped up a 9.5-sack season with the Baltimore Ravens in 2023.

Smith has taken down opposing quarterbacks three times in six games with the Browns this season.

Reddick also appears to be a potential option, as he's surpassed double-digit sack totals in each of the past four years. However, the Lions need to be willing to pay up if they acquire him. He hasn't appeared in a game during the Jets' 2024 campaign while holding out for a new contract.

Detroit owns the league's eight-best scoring defense, but the team could falter without Hutchinson, as his 7.5 sacks ranked No. 1 among all players this season.

Lions general manager Brad Holmes may start working the phones as the Nov. 5 trade deadline approaches.

Haason Reddick Hires Drew Rosenhaus, Ryan Matha to Resolve Jets Contract amid Holdout

New York Jets linebacker Haason Reddick has hired Drew Rosenhaus and Ryan Matha as his new agents amid his contract standoff with the team, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Rosenhaus told Schefter that Reddick "would like to be a New York Jet for years to come and our goal is to make that happen."

Schefter also reported that Rosenhaus and Matha have reached out directly to the team to open a dialogue.

As much as an agent is supposed to work on their client's behalf, the challenge before Rosenhaus and Matha might be convincing Reddick to take the best offer on the table from the Jets.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported on Sunday the two-time Pro Bowler is aiming for a multiyear extension on par with the highest-paid pass-rushers in the league. However, "there is no market for such a deal."

Rapoport also reported that New York and Reddick's previous agents had negotiated a one-year contract that "would have given him the opportunity to make up for the fines and make more money than he was originally scheduled to earn."

Maybe the devil was in the details with that amended deal for 2024. Only saying Reddick had "the opportunity" to earn back his original salary and then some leads one to believe a portion of the money—perhaps less than his original $14.3 million base salary—wasn't guaranteed.

But if Reddick is determined to get long-term security carrying him beyond the current season, Rosenhaus and Matha could be facing an uphill battle. Based on the absence of an agreement, the Jets have so far been unwilling to meet that demand, and the prolonged nature of this saga presumably leaves them even less inclined to do so.

New York has more leverage at the moment too.

Rapoport noted Reddick has to report to the team by Week 13 or this year won't count toward his NFL service time. As a result, he wouldn't hit free agency in the offseason and would stay on the Jets' books for 2025.

There isn't a ton of downside for the Jets to simply wait and either welcome Reddick back or watch him miss an entire season and forfeit millions in potential earnings.

Reaching a resolution where everybody comes out a winner isn't impossible for Rosenhaus and Matha, but it won't be easy.

Jets Rumors: Haason Reddick Rejected 1-Year Contract Offer; OLB Could Retire from NFL

Disgruntled linebacker Haason Reddick declined a one-year contract offer from the New York Jets earlier this season, according to NFL Network's Ian Rapoport.

Rapoport reported Sunday the Jets were prepared to give Reddick an amended deal that increased his salary and allowed him to recoup his forfeited earnings amid his holdout.

"The parties thought an amicable resolution would happen to allow the pass rusher to play for the Jets, earn his money back and have the opportunity to cash in again this offseason with a big 2024 in a defense coaches believe is perfect for him," Rapoport reported. "Yet, Reddick declined to sign the deal."

The NFL insider noted Reddick has until Week 13 to show up and join the Jets, or his contract could toll so that he would remain with New York in 2025 rather than hit free agency. Rapoport went so far as to hypothesize the two-time Pro Bowler could retire outright in the absence of a long-term agreement.

To say Reddick has overplayed his hand would probably be an understatement.

Early on, driving a hard bargain with the Jets made sense in theory. If New York got off an underwhelming start, general manager Joe Douglas might grow desperate enough to either meet the 30-year-old's asking price or at least get close enough to make the deal attractive.

Well, we're pretty much there with the Jets sitting at 2-3 and having fired head coach Robert Saleh, yet no accord with Reddick is in sight. Regarding a possible long-term contract, Rapoport wrote that "it appears, at this moment, there is no market for such a deal."

As a result, the veteran edge-rusher is left losing a $792,000 game check for every week he's out, which is on top of the millions in fines that accrued in the offseason.

Creative Artists Agency has reportedly dropped Reddick as a client as well, which makes for bad optics and means he's left without formal representation to continue any negotiations with the Jets.

During his media call after firing Saleh, team owner and chairman Woody Johnson affirmed the door remains open for Reddick.

Based on Rapoport's newest report, New York nonetheless remains as resolute as Reddick, which is deepening the standoff.

The story also raises doubt on whether the Jets could even flip him in a trade before the Nov. 5 deadline. If he wasn't willing to sign an improved one-year contract with New York, it's hard to see why he'd extend that courtesy to another franchise.
